The new premises at 3 Station Street will be ready for business in the coming weeks, with the agency planned to service Pomona and the Noosa hinterland three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am 3.00pm. Sarah over the moon with her university scholarship Former Noosa District State High School student, Sarah Bailey just can’t wipe the smile off her face. The Cooroy local is about to head off to the University of Queensland with a scholarship in one hand and a suitcase in the other. Sarah was one of several impressive applicants of the annual Cooroy Community Bank branch scholarship program and will now use the funds towards realising her dream of tertiary study. Sarah plans to tackle a Bachelor of Arts degree this year and then transition to a dual degree of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (Honours). Students here to ‘re-imagine’ Pomona Students from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) School of Design once again will be on the streets of Pomona during March and April as they undertake in an academic assignment towards their architecture degree. Pomona is one of two towns chosen this year as an outdoor classroom for students to study the architectural style and scale of buildings and imagine how they might design extensions and new structures that fit within the town streetscapes and historic buildings. The Majestic Theatre and Noosa Museum will be among buildings the students will study. They have also been asked to imagine an ‘All Ages Centre’ complex on vacant land in Station Street, adjacent to the Pomona Bowls Club. The task is an academic exercise, designed to provide the Year 3 architectural students with a ‘real life’ design task beyond the theory and lecture rooms of the QUT Brisbane Gardens Point campus, said lecturer Yasu Santo. He said the All Ages Centre was a challenge for the students, designed around the concept of an activities hub for generations from children to the elderly. Pomona residents should get ready to be stopped in the street by groups of students asking questions about what town characteristics they like and what lifestyle advantages they cherish. The students have until the end of the first semester to submit their assignments in the form of architectural concept drawings. There is no expectation that the students’ concepts will be built, however. Related to the students’ design exercise, Cameron Barrie, a QUT town planning student, will be re-imagining Pomona as his final assignment before graduation. ‘Real word’ experience in support of academic training within the university walls forms part of the QUT learning philosophy.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS Free holiday bus program hailed a hit

Easter Free Holiday Buses New plan to reduce bushland fire risk From Good Friday 3rd April – 12th

Noosa Council's Free Holiday Bus program has been hailed a hit, with more than 43,000 passengers climbing aboard at Christmas.

April 2015, Noosa Council, in partnership with TransLink, are once again providing FREE public transport for everyone in the Noosa Shire.

Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said a passenger survey showed strong support, with 63 per cent of respondents indicating that they'd consider reducing their household's number of cars if bus transport was free all year.

Free Services include:  Route 626 Tewantin to Sunrise Beach via Noosa Heads

If the buses had not been free, 57 per cent of the respondents said they would have driven their cars, and 20 per cent would have caught the bus anyway.

 Route 629 Tewantin to Noosa Junction via Noosa Civic

"This feedback is encouraging. It suggests that people who perhaps wouldn't normally use public transport, will give it a go if it's free," Cr Playford said.

 Route 064 (temporary shuttle) Peregian Beach to Noosa Heads

"When we have more people who would usually drive, opting to take the bus, it means fewer vehicles on our roads. "The Free Holiday Bus initiative helps ease traffic congestion and reduces pressure on parking at our busy holiday precincts at peak periods."

 Route 627 Tewantin to Sunshine Beach via Noosa Heads  Route 628 Noosa Parklands to Noosa Junction via Noosa Civic

 Route 632 Noosa to Cooran via Cooroy and Pomona

 Boreen Point-Tewantin Flexilink and Council Cabs The free holiday buses are funded by Noosa Council’s public transport levy and aims to:  Reduce congestion during peak holiday period.  Promote public transport in and around Noosa.  Provides stress-free access to Noosa’s best locations free of charge. Complete a feedback survey online at www.noosa.qld.gov.au and go in the draw to win a $100 visa gift card. (Survey live from the 3 April and conditions apply.)

Noosa Shire bush reserves are in the spotlight with Council developing a new fire management plan. Council yesterday authorised staff to begin bushfire risk-assessing Councilcontrolled bush reserves. Planning and Environment Manager Kerri Coyle said bushland close to private properties was high on the priority list. "New state government fire hazard mapping classifies 122 of the 159 Noosa Shire bushland reserves as medium, high or very high fire danger," Ms Coyle said. "Council developed a management plan in 2006 but with the addition of new bushland reserves and changes to fire hazard mapping under new State Planning Policy (SPP) , it now needs updating." Council will work with stakeholders such as the rural fire brigade to develop the new Noosa Bushland Reserve Network Fire Management Plan. "Council has established new fire trails and carried out prescribed burns as well as other activities outlined in the 2006 management plan, but more work needs to be done," Ms Coyle said. Staff will report back to Council with recommendations once the plan is developed.

PLOD’S PAGE Floody Idiots: Well we dodged it last year but Marcia gave it to Yeppoon and Rocky and a related system left us with moderate flooding…. historically moderate for our locals anyway! Rather than just wait and see, emergency services consulted with residents and local disaster management groups to kick into gear early and prepare communities as far as possible. Then the rain came and whilst the services were doing their best to ensure the safety of people and property, a number of sightseeing try hards decided to drive around road closed and flooded signs in their lift kit prepped 4wd’s and, even a few small sedans. These clearly weren’t locals trying to get home, we assisted those as far as possible. We get genuinely busy in these type of events and don’t have time for individuals disregarding good advice and seeing how deep the water on Louis Bazzo Drive really is. What then happens is that they can often lose the road or hit submerged obstacles and then have to climb onto the roof of their drowned car, taking selfies naturally.

new one, some are clearly just having a go. Even slow speed falls onto bitumen or concrete have resulted in compressed skull fractures and broken limbs, ask the ambos. Parents, we know you love your kids.

Crime:

A basic bike helmet starts at around 30 dollars = lunch. Preventable brain damage, cranial-facial injuries = lifetime of regret. You leading by example, wearing one when riding with them and ensuring they’re kitted up when they leave home = priceless.

Great work by locals in intercepting and identifying the offender resulted in a large clear up of offences some of which extended to the Brisbane area.

When we pull kids on about this and give them some guidance, I feel it’s often the parents we should be lecturing. Along with basic guidance in road rules and ensuring littlies ride with parents or older siblings, a helmet is a very effective and cheap piece of insurance. We’ll be conducting some primary school lectures on this topic in the near future.

Tragedies:

People report this to us and it then becomes a priority job and ties us up, along with, potentially, the highly valued Fire Service swift water rescue teams who are better off deployed to genuine emergencies.

We recently experienced a crime spike in the Kin Kin and Cooran areas with several break and enters of dwellings and motor vehicle thefts.

We also conducted drug search operations in January in conjunction with specialist police units which resulted in the detection of dangerous drugs and utensils at several premises in Pomona and Cooran. We run drug search operations at least every 2 months in our patch as aside from drug related offences, amphetamine addiction in particular is clearly linked to property crime and offences of violence, fruit from the poisoned tree, so to speak. Anyway folks, a pretty good start to the year from Plod’s desk, stay well and be good to each other.

Despite a run of almost 2 years without a fatal traffic crash in the Pomona Police Division, the end of 2014 saw 2 Sgt Dan McNAMARA OIC tragic deaths in the Federal area in the Pomona Police 548 52586 space of about one month.
