On May 15 - 17 Tall Trees Art Inc. celebrated it’s seventh successful exhibition at the pop-up gallery at Cooran Memorial Hall. Thirty-nine local artists exhibited works covering a range of mediums. ‘Illuminosatree’, a beautiful lighting installation shown above, was a firm favourite with the crowd and took out this year’s People’s Choice Award.
Fire station open day to become annual event
The people of Pomona are justifiably proud of their new fire station in the heart of town – a fact proven when hundreds of people streamed through the complex on the Saturday following its official opening by the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Jo-Ann Miller on 13 May. Now it seems the open day concept will become an annual event, coinciding with the King of the Mountain festival. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service has confirmed that the new station will be an added attraction at Pomona’s big celebration of the year, to be held next on 26 July. About 60 people attended the official opening, which a beaming Ms Miller said was her first official fire station opening as Minister. “This new fire station is a far cry from the old one on Factory Street which was located at the bottom of a hill and was regularly flooded, damaging the building and the equipment inside,” Ms Miller told an appreciative audience, their heads nodding in agreement. Together with the ambulance station next door and the police station and courthouse around the corner, Pomona had a quality emergency services precinct, the minister said.

create a much larger, multi-day affair staged by an event management company, our feedback is that yet another big, brassy professional event isn’t what our community wants. People sometimes enjoy a slower pace and the sense of belonging that comes from attending small-town Festivals that are about participation and fun, and not just about making money.”
Sponsored by E Fitness, the 2.5km Pram Push is an easy run that can be enjoyed by Mums or Dads with prams around Stan Topper Park. The King of the Mountain Festival has been held in the hinterland town of Pomona for 37 years, and has enjoyed the support and sponsorship of a variety of local and major businesses during that time. The premier event of the Festival, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, sees Australian and international competitors race at top speed to the summit of 438m Mt Cooroora, and back down again at an even faster rate. It’s a difficult and dangerous race, but it never fails to attract the fit, the strong and the brave - of whom only 100 are selected to race. In addition to the Mountain Challenge, the Festival includes a variety of other races for all ages and abilities. For those not competing, a Heritage Market, good quality antiques fair, car show, side-show alley, skate board competition, petting zoo for the little ones, and lots of food

ensures there is something for everyone. The King of the Mountain Festival will be held on Sunday, 26 July. Despite the sudden loss of the Festival’s primary sponsor, planning is well underway for a memorable event. Festival Chair, Heather Manders, said “The King of the Mountain Festival is one of the projects the Lions Club is most proud of. It has thrived due to the generosity of major and local business sponsors, and of course the commitment of our volunteers and the Pomona community.”
Having said that, fund-raising is an important part of the day, as the Lions support a wide range of charities, from an emergency accommodation centre in Nambour through to childhood cancer research, drought appeals, a number of school programs and lots more. Ms Manders noted that the Festival is in good hands because of the generosity of its sponsors and added that the Bendigo Bank was of particularly noteworthy because of its continued support as the sponsor of the International Mountain Challenge. Ms Manders said, “We have a great team involved in this year’s Festival, but we are always looking for more volunteers and helpers. And businesses of all sizes are invited to become involved through sponsorship from as little as $100, or by donating prizes for raffles.”
Asked why Wimmers, last year’s major sponsor, had this year withdrawn its sponsorship at the last minute, Ms Manders was philosophical.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland Poker Run Ride - 5 July A more leisurely lead up to the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is the Poker Run, a 200km motorcycle ride through the scenic Sunshine Coast hinterland. The route is kept secret until the day, but this year it will start at Stan Topper Park in Pomona and finish at the Cooran Football Club. Along the route riders collect playing cards at each stop, and the person with the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner. Prizes are donated by sponsors, with last year’s prize for the winning hand including a night at Yabbaloumba Retreat at Kenilworth. There are also prizes for the second best poker hand, the worst poker hand, a ladies’ draw and various raffles. The Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club also offers a prize for the oldest participating bike. Asked about the coolest bikes that have participated in the Poker Run, organiser Stephen Stewart said he has seen some great ones over the years.

A couple of stand-outs were two 1930s Indians, constructed with left-hand throttles rather than the standard right-hand. Apparently these bikes were manufactured especially for the New York Police Department, and had lefthand throttles because most people are right-handed. So when New York’s Finest were chasing an offender and needed to shoot at them from their motorbikes, naturally they needed their right hand
Entry into the Pomona Poker Run is $15 per rider, and $5 per pillion. The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, and the Poker Run is the major fund-raising event for the Festival. This year the Poker Run will be held on Sunday, 5 July. Registrations open at 8am at Stan Topper Park in Pomona, and the Run starts at 9am. The volunteers represented over fifteen local organisations which goes to prove how much our small town depends – and thrives – on the hard work and commitment of volunteers. Tony Perrett MP, member for Gympie presented certificates. In his opening comments, Mr Perrett congratulated volunteers on their efforts and emphasised the contribution made by volunteers both locally and nationally. It is estimated that of the 600,000 not for profit organisations in Australia only

SubTropical Gardening magazine editor, Paul Plant, is sharing his knowledge in workshop presentations organised by the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends.
“I pull and tug and whack the clay” Lisa reveals as she hits the soft clay pot with a potter’s paddle. “The process can be very therapeutic”. “And oxymoronically the clay is very forgiving . When it’s surrendered to the flames of the kiln, it’s almost serendipitous as its glazes change to iridescent copper and blues and reds.”

Paul will provide insights into the sensuous qualities of plants and display plant species that can be grown locally here in the Noosa region. No doubt you will leave Paul’s workshop presentation with a fresh approach to home garden design. The first presentation is on Tuesday 9 June at 2pm. For those unable to attend on a midweek day, Paul is kindly repeating that presentation on Saturday 20 June at 10am. There will also be printed handouts available to those who attend. So bring along a fold-up chair, your coffee/tea to-go, and join Paul Plant at the large shelter shed at the Noosa Botanic Gardens.
Lisa said she was delighted to be invited to be Artist in Residence at the PopUp Art Exhibition, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to be with the exceptional exhibiting artists and to see myself in the public’s eyes.” Lisa welcomes the exhibition visitors to sit with her, learn and work with some clay if they’d like. “And to also touch and feel my creations. The soul of the product can only be experienced when you touch: you don’t get that when you just look”, says Lisa. WONDERS OF WATERCOLOUR Pomona Railway Station Gallery presents the exhibition, WONDERS OF WATERCOLOUR 30 May to July 2. The exhibition will feature paintings by a group of advanced water colourists who have been painting together for many years. The group, initially tutored by Holly Simpson is now tutored by professional local artist Lyn Fraser -Roberts. The paintings on display are submitted by many of the almost 20 strong group. The group meets every Wednesday at Wallace House in Noosa, learning new skills and improving techniques, subjects range from landscapes/ seascapes to flowers, street scenes, boats and still life. Usually painted in a traditional style, the paintings are bright and lively. Lyn Fraser Roberts has been painting in Watercolour since 1991, teaching all over Qld, Northern NSW and overseas in Greece, Scotland and Italy. A trip to Norfolk Island is planned for October and there are still some vacancies on the trip. Opening for this talented group exhibition will be held on Saturday 30 May. LIFE IS AN OPEN ROAD How lucky we are in our beautiful country that our lives can be seen as an open road. In some countries you would not be free to have a choice on which road you might take but here the world is your oyster and whatever road you take is mostly your choice. I can only speak about an open road as I have chosen it as I do not really know what it has been like for others. As a small child my path through life was mainly governed by others but even then I had choices as to whether I happily accepted my life as it was or rebelled against it. It wasn’t until my teens that I became in control of which road I would take. The road I took was indeed very bumpy and it didn’t have any side roads I might have taken. Traveling along most roads you eventually come across a cross road where you have a choice on which direction you might head in. My first cross road came when I left the safety of home aged fifteen and set out to choose my road in the big wide world. This road wasn’t any less bumpy but now I had more control on which road I went down. In my early twenties I again came across a cross road and which road I was to take from here had a big impact on how my life would be from then on. It was a long open road full of joy and learning. On this road I picked up some passengers. This was part of the joy as I loved having them on board and it made life more interesting. There were many cross roads on this part of the journey but the choices were made easier by the passengers I had on board. Then another cross road appeared when we bought our own property and the pattern of the open road changed and I had a permanent base from which to view the roads on offer. Many roads were explored with great success and I was very happy with my choice of roads.

Eventually all the passengers except one set off to explore their own open roads which left the two of us to contemplate what next on our open road. We eventually came across another cross road and decided to explore another open road which led us thousands of kilometres away from where we were. It seemed a good thing at the time but when we reached the next cross road we decided to keep going. Now our open road of life has led us to what we find is a peaceful place with no need to make big excursions along the open road. If we come across another cross road in life we will deal with it when it comes. At least we have had a lot of experience with life being an open road and will not worry about what the next cross road might bring. -Les Shipp

Permaculture meet will focus on soil condition for plants If you have a brown thumb that you want to turn green, the friendly and helpful atmosphere of Permaculture Noosa’s monthly meetings may provide the perfect environment for your aspiration to ‘grow’. The next Permaculture Noosa meeting will be held at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Thursday 18 June, starting at 7pm, followed by a supper at 9pm (gold coin donation). The meeting is free and open to anyone. Aptly for the International Year of Soils, this month’s guest speaker is Leanne Harper, whose passion is soil fertility. Leanne teaches how to grow healthy plants on almost any soil, using biological gardening techniques. At the June meeting she will discuss the four actions of a biological gardener – (1) work with nature, (2) feed the soil life organic matter, (3) minimise tilling and compaction, and (4) balance the soil minerals. A search for a solution to a serious health issue in 1997 led Leanne to study plant nutrient density and soil fertility. She has grown food in her own garden organically for many years. The chapters of her life are rich with her various studies of rainforest revegetation, permaculture and ecological agriculture/biological farming. Leanne’s passion is also her work. For a fee, she writes reports and recommendations for home gardeners who contact her for a comprehensive mineral analysis to be undertaken on their garden soil. New club formed for recreational trail horse riders Recreational horse riders on the Sunshine Coast have formed a new club that will cater for non-competitive, friendly trail riding experiences for the whole family to enjoy. The Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders Club is affiliated with ATHRA (the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association), the peak body for recreational riders. Affiliation with ATHRA provides comprehensive insurance coverage while on ATHRA rides, an emphasis on safety through accreditation of trail co-ordinators and a voice at all levels of government regarding access. ATHRA began in 1972 as a way to bring people together who love bush riding and to establish the National Trail. The founder was R M Williams and his legacy lives today with the Bicentennial National Trail extending from Cooktown to Tasmania, making it the longest, continuous multi-use trail in the world. ATHRA has grown to be a national organisation with over a hundred clubs offering low cost leisure riding for people of all ages to enjoy. The new club will organise monthly rides in the Sunshine Coast region across a wide variety of terrain. These could be one day rides only, or could be weekend rides with a camp fire (where permitted) and overnight camping. It doesn’t matter what type of horse or equipment you have, you can join in. If you are looking for new places to ride, new people to meet and an opportunity for your horse to socialise and experience a range of different terrain and conditions, then this club may be just what you’re looking for. By Paul Marriott The last six months have seen significant progress with our plans to expand the garden at the Community House. The new bed is in, irrigated and Above: Paul Marriott planted; the rocks for the new dry stone wall are on their way and the timbers for the new Gazebo have been identified and we are working on the design. Thanks go to Mara Ellis and Noosa Council for sourcing the fantastic recycled timber that we will be using. Thanks too, to Brian Lawson for his extensive support throughout this project. The garden team has also expanded and now has Kees Van Ruth and Jeanette dal Santo contributing to the overall success. We appreciate the massive range of skills and dedication they have brought with them.

Sourcing the plants for the expansion has not been easy. Noosa Landcare has been exceptional and we need to thank both Phillip and Aaron. Neilson's Kin Kin Quarry has been generous in supplying the dry stone wall rocks, thank you Liam. We’d like to thank Hinterland Landscapes for transporting the rocks to the Community House. Thank you Ian. Lesley and John from Permaculture Noosa Seed Savers have also offered to contribute. With all these new resources and features, several classes could be on the agenda sometime in the coming months including : a gardening master class that will be linked to a nutrition course, a gardening course covering basic gardening skills, and even a dry stone wall building class could be featured. With the way the current garden is shaping up and the way the new Bush tucker garden is developing, the grounds of the Pomona Community House will be a fine place for the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of the Community House which is coming up in October. We’ll keep you posted!
