The focus will be on Pomona this month when the King of the Mountain Festival will be staged, featuring the famous Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. To be held on July 26, one hundred race competitors will run at top speed from the centre of Pomona to the top of Mt Cooroora, and back down the mountain even faster. For Hubertien Wichers, her milestone birthday in 2015 will find her racing to the top of Mt Cooroora and back in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge.

Fun for all the family From page 1 For the motoring enthusiasts there will be two car shows, featuring the QLD Mini Miners Club and the Combined Coastal Car Club Cooroy.

Prizes totalling $1000 will be up for grabs in the Pomona True Value King of the Skate Park competition. And let’s not forget the dedicated Pomona Firefighters, who will be setting fire to display kitchens to demonstrate the best way to extinguish them, and showing off their new Bronto fire truck.

If you’re ready to run but not yet ready to tackle the International Mountain Challenge, there will be a variety of races on the day, including the Zinc Mountain Dash, the E Fitness Pram Push and the Nestle 3km Family Fun Run. Primary schools in the region will compete in relay runs and tugs-of-war, and local businesses and organisations will again support the Festival by taking part in the Raine & Horne Corporate tug-of-war (although the Fire Fighters are determined to retain the title).

If racing about and tugs-of-war are a little too much, there will be a Zumba demonstration to get your heart pumping, and live music on the IGA Pomona stage, so you can dance the afternoon away. For those who like their music to be more rousing, the Sunshine Coast Caledonian Pipes and

Drums will be marching as well as featuring on the main stage.

The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, with Noosa Council pitching in as a major grant sponsor and Tourism Noosa also supporting the Festival.

This year the Festival will be held on Sunday, 26 July.

Be sure to pencil that date into your diaries and calendars because it will be a great day, with something for everyone.

Art gallery venue for creative display Hinterland artists showcase talents The Pomona Gallery Artists and Friends’ King of the Mountain Exhibition will open at the Pomona Gallery on Saturday 4 July at 11.00am, with Cr Sandy Bolton opening the exhibition this year.

The exhibition is likely to attract a large audience, as it will be open between 10am and 2pm during the 2015 King of the Mountain festival.

Many local artists will be exhibiting at this yearly exhibition. Several have created a combined painting for sale and which, this year, will showcase the beauty, location and features of the delightful Pomona Gallery.

The gallery has enjoyed great success and sales of previous combined paintings. One now resides in a local doctor’s surgery, another in Ireland.

All are invited to the King of the Mountain Exhibition opening. The exhibition will be in the Carriage Room at the Pomona Gallery for one month.

Community garden gets underway at Station Street

For those who have wondered at the landscaping work underway on vacant land opposite the Pomona Pub, a community garden extension will transform this weed patch into a functional area for indigenous bush tucker plants and flowering native species.

The work is a Pomona Community House (PCH) initiative, using grants funding and raw materials supplied by generous local businesses and Noosa Council.

Community House gardening coordinator Paul Mariott, said it was gratifying to see the cooperation that had gone into bringing the garden from planning to fruition. House Manager, Brian Lawson, secured the grants funding, while supplies have come from Neilsen’s Kin Kin Quarry and Hinterland Landscapes.

“Thanks are due also to Kim Maddison, administration manager at Noosa Landcare, to Kylie Finigan, Noosa Council’s community development officer and to a host of volunteers,” Paul said.

New fee structure rewards responsible pet owners Pensioners who desex their pets will receive free dog registration under Noosa Council's new fee structure, saving the majority of pensioners $30 a year.

New pet registration fees introduced by Noosa Council will save pensioners $30 a year.

"Noosa has one of the highest rates of desexed dogs in Queensland at almost 90 per cent," Mayor Noel Playford said.

"So while registration fees will increase for the new financial year, the new fee structure rewards pet owners who have had their dog desexed."

Registration for desexed dogs is $30 from 1 July, compared with $140 for a dog that has not been de-sexed, or $115 with a pensioner concession.

"The state government's Animal Management Act requires Council to provide incentives for pet desexing. This fee structure rewards the majority of Noosa dog owners who have had their pet desexed, and encourages others to consider it."

Cr Playford said the changes removed a discount for pet owners who had microchipped their pets.

"Microchipping has been a legal requirement for dog owners for many years and Council will no longer provide financial incentives to encourage pet owners to comply with the law.

"It's in every dog owner's interest to microchip their pet so Council can quickly reunite them with their dog, should it get lost."

Cr Playford said animal management was among Council's most costly responsibilities, and changes to the fee structure would recoup only some of the costs.

"Registration of regulated dogs will rise from $257 to $400 per year," he said.

"Regulated dogs have a history of menacing behaviour or attacks on people or animals. It is in the interests of public safety that Council regularly checks on these animals and the premises where they are kept. The increased fee is to try to recoup some of the actual costs for annual inspections of regulated dogs."

Dog registration helps fund off-leash dog area maintenance, pound costs, dog patrols and the provision of dog waste bags, as well as other animal management activities.

On another front, I have had a number of requests concerning Six-Mile Creek Bridge on the Pomona-Kin Kin Road.

This is a state government responsibility and I am reluctant that ratepayers’ money is spent fixing a state government infrastructure deficiency.

The most effective way to get this issue on the state infrastructure minister’s desk is to lobby the local state member, Tony Perrett, in a strong, united front, with councillors doing the same as a team effort.

I have also been asked whether the council’s approval of a Recreational Vehicle (RV) stopover at Cooroy will have a negative impact on the visitations to the Pomona Caravan Park, which is a revenue stream for the Noosa Country Show. As the RV decision forms park of the endeavours to improve the whole of the hinterland economy by ‘pulling’ trade from the Bruce Highway and funnel tourists along the ‘Noosa Country Run’, I feel it will be a positive move.

Pomona Meals on Wheels seeks new clients

by PETER READ The number of meals being produced at the Pomona and District Meals on Wheels kitchen has dropped significantly – from more than 40 to 28 daily – and new clients are being sought.

New eligibility criteria apply to prospective clients from 1 July, including external assessment of need.

Once approved, however, the elderly, sick or those with a disability can receive nutritious meals in their home for a modest cost – all made possible by the efforts of dedicated paid staff and, mostly, volunteers.

Pomona MOW kitchen supervisor, Di Donaldson, believes that lack of awareness is one of the factors behind the recent drop in client numbers.

Pomona MOW serves clients across a wide area from its base at the Pomona Memorial Hall.

She said the meal service was a key factor in allowing some elderly and incapacitated people to stay in their own home rather than move into care.

“Hot meals as well as cold and frozen meals for the non delivery days, are delivered to the door in the Pomona, Cooroy East and West, Eumundi, Cooran and Boreen Point areas.

Get involved with the Noosa Country Show 2015 Nominations called for Miss Showgirl and Ambassador A wonderful experience awaits young people wanting to become involved with agricultural and community issues through the 2015 Noosa Country Show’s Showgirl and Rural Ambassador Competition.

For those with a passion for rural issues, nominations are open for people under the age of 29 years, male and female, to become the 2015 Rural Ambassador. The Noosa Showgirl category is open to all ages – from 0-7 years for Little Miss, 8-12 years for Miss Junior, 13-17 years for Miss Teen and 18 -28 for Miss Noosa Showgirl. There is also a Little Mister category for boys under seven years.

Presentations to the winners in the various categories will be made at the Noosa Show Ball, to be held on Saturday 29 August at the Pomona Memorial Hall.

New Telstra towers to improve phone reception Mobile phone coverage in the Noosa Hinterland will improve with the installation of two additional Telstra communication towers at Kin Kin and Belli Park under a new Mobile Black Spot Program that will deliver almost 500 new or upgraded mobile base stations nationally.

The Great Tucker Cooking Program designed to help people learn how to cook healthy and quick food on a budget.

The program will teach participants how to buy, cook and store healthy and tasty food. Better yet, the program will also show participants how to manage their grocery budget, all while engaging with other community members in a friendly environment.

The program, started with the assistance of a grant from Noosa Council, is a FREE 5-week cooking class

Mentors prepare students for business life Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) has successfully hosted Australian Business Week for the twelfth straight year and appetite for the program hasn’t waned.

Australian Business Week (ABW) offered students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. They worked as part of a team managing their own business.

This year students ran an imaginary, Consumer Electronics Retail store and with the help of a business and teacher mentor, discovered the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century.

Over the week, students had to make decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training.

This year’s 15 teams also developed a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business.

Finally, each team prepared a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance. They delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. This year, the team named Switched On Electronics were crowned Grand Champions.

Hope in a shoebox heading for East Timor

Life at school will soon be a lot easier for a lot of children in East Timor. And it’s because some of our local students started thinking inside the box.

Last week, Cooroy State School students assembled hundreds of educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu - a school about 30 minutes west of Dili.

The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 of primary school age. But the area also caters for other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies.

The Pomona Community House Table Tennis Group will be hosting the Gympie Table Tennis Group on Saturday, 18th July 2015, for a competition team event.

After visiting the Moreton Bay Table Tennis club in Caboolture and taking part in a round-robin tournament with two teams, Pomona is proud to sport four teams competing against Gympie on the 18th July.

Games will start at 10 AM and every one is invited to drop in. All members have helped secure two more championship tables, allowing us to present four world class playing surfaces at our home venue the Pomona State School hall.

This hall has been the catapult for attracting more players to the exciting sport of table tennis. Our juniors are now enjoying every Wednesday night, from 5 PM onwards, a mini competition with teams formed on the day.

The Friday night has become a magnet for the ladies, with some regulars enjoying the exercise and fun our game provides – we are hoping to see more female players joining this day.

Pomona Pacers – Need some exercise?

The Pomona Pacers, our local Heart Foundation walking group, walk every weekday morning. You may think it is a bit chilly to set out at 7 am but with a good stride and pleasant company the walk is over before you know it and you’ve had a healthy start to your day. Members of the group may elect to participate in the Walker Recognition Scheme which is a great incentive program managed by the Heart Foundation to keep you motivated.

We have a variety of local walks to suit most weather conditions and we also occasionally go further afield to enjoy the natural beauty of the Noosa hinterland. Below is a group of our walkers on a recent excursion to Ringtail Creek. We also share a number of social outings including a monthly moon walk along the Noosa River. Why not come along and join in the fun – how often you walk is entirely up to you.

PLOD’S PAGE Cold Killer: You would have seen the recent media campaigns on the methamphetamine stimulant drug "Ice" and if you're like most of the populace, brushed it off with a "not me, never" and gone back to surfing the IPAD. I reckon we should all know more about it and the reason for the big spending Govt campaigns to control it because, it's not just a Kings Cross type affliction, this stuff is everywhere including the Pomona police division, and is predominantly affecting our youth. I've seen some evidence of it at drug raids but what alerted and alarmed me was a recent one on one with a "functional addict" (oxymoron?).

This person was outwardly decent, average, mid 20's and had been clean for about a year. He described the effects of Ice and a 5 year downward spiral that resulted in his job, marriage, family and almost his life, lost. I noticed that he had false teeth and he told me that Ice addicts constantly grind their teeth destroying the enamel. It started as a shared ice pipe at a party from a best mate and because it is often almost instantly addictive, his whole life then revolved around "getting on".

This guy hated the idea of heroin and needles and because he was an occasional Bong smoker (Cannabis pipe), using it wasn't really a problem.

The effects were immediate, more intense and longer lasting than even Ice's relative, the drug Speed. He felt his energy, alertness, confidence and pleasure increase markedly and his heart rate often reached amazing BPM even while lying blitzed on a couch.

Coming down from it he described a crushing depression, anxiety, problem focussing and the inability to sleep.

After about a month, he was only functional when he had scored a hit which was now every day for about 5 hours and decreasing. His weight as a robust construction worker, went from a healthy 90 kg's to about 60 within 12 weeks. Worse, to increase the high, he started injecting and now has Hepatitis C. It is generally cheaper and easier to buy than dugs like cocaine and heroin and there are an ever increasing number of cooks trying to get in on the market whilst securing their own supply.

If you hear of Ice dealers or producers in the area and want to help stop this spreading, call us or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000, anonymous is fine.

If you recognise these symptoms in people you care about or they ask for help, a good place to start is Australian drug foundation's "Drug info" on the web. It has an excellent "Ice: Family and friends support guide". Sit down with your kids and get educated on this emerging epidemic. Honestly, this problem goes beyond law enforcement, it's about the community saving the lives of loved ones.

We are currently in a Statewide traffic enforcement phase called operation "cold snap" which will probably see most of you breath tested in a number of locations and times.

Also be aware that as you wave at us (all fingers please!) in the Plod wagon, your speed is being recorded on our mobile radar. Please monitor your speed particularly in built up areas, most modern cars make it all too easy to cruise over the speed limit and whilst we don't enjoy booking people it's often the only way to remind you to switch on and keep the prangs low.
