Men’s Shed Pomona has a new Home

After 2 years of trying to find a site to start a Men’s Shed we have finally been given a permit to occupy the old Qld Parks and Wildlife Service storage/ workshop building just off School Street in Pomona. While the building is a very basic 10x8.5 metre structure that has not been used for about 5 years it represents a great starter building for the 160 men who have registered their interest in becoming members of the Shed.

with a permanent shed. Unfortunately, because there is no electrical connection to the Shed, we are stuck with a cost of around $10,000 to provide power which takes a huge chunk out of our bank balance. If you would like to contribute to this great concept please contact us at the Community House.

We became aware that there was a site and a building operated by the QLD Department of Parks and Wildlife Service that was no longer being used and we applied for a Permit to Occupy and were granted occupation from the 1st of November 2014. Currently we have a Steering Committee of 8 men who are responsible for gaining this building for men in our area to use in the future.

Call for state government to coordinate planning Pomona has become the focus of a call by public transport advocacy group Rail Back On Track for the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail to better coordinate their planning around the upgrade of the Reserve Street level crossing and the proposed closure of the cross-track pedestrian pathway linking Station and Factory streets via the Pomona Railway Station. Qld Rail wants pedestrian and cyclists to use a new pathway to be built on the northern side of the level crossing, between the IGA supermarket and Pages furniture factory. Work will start early next year. Pathway connections from the surrounding streets, as well as on-road bicycle paths are planned, but won’t be built at the same time as the new level crossing boom gates and controlling mechanism are installed. Noosa Council is objecting to the closure of the mid-town crossing connecting the Majestic Theatre with the Pomona Hotel. Spokesman for Rail Back On Track, Robert Dow, said the situation at Pomona reflected planning inadequacies at other railway towns on the North Coast Line where the needs of pedestrians and cyclists had not been considered adequately, resulting in the railway becoming a barrier to connectivity and walking movements.

QR also refuses to consult the local community after written under-taking that it would do so.”Mr Dow said managing a modern railway was not confined simply to steel tracks, sleepers and signals, but to a gamut of issues about how people lived, connected, worked and shopped. Rail Back on Track Sunshine Coast spokesperson, Jeff Addison, said now was the time for TMR to act and establish a railway towns revitalisation taskforce in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils.

Mr Addison quoted from the Sunshine Coast Council’s Sustainable Transport Discussion Paper, which states: “The planning and delivery of sustainable “At Pomona, QR is contemplating transport for the Sunshine Coast closing a popular mid-town pedestrian requires an integrated partnership pathway, forcing pedestrians and approach between all levels of cyclists to go the long way around to an government, key stakeholders and the alternative crossing point at a community at large. entering into partnerships with transport service providers at the early stages of planning in order to assist in meeting the challenge of addressing transport needs for a growing population with changing demographics.” “Clearly, TMR and QR need to be at the table, negotiating with councils the integrated, place-based planning solutions envisaged. As we see at Pomona, currently, these agencies remain disengaged,” Mr Addison said. POMONA STATE SCHOOL POOL UPDATE

MISFITS - “Is there a skit in that?” At a Community Connect morning tea earlier this year, local duo Jim & Helen (aka MISFITS), showcased their comedic skits in front of an appreciative audience. Active on the Sunshine Coast and seeking to share with the wider community that they have started a Facebook page - MISFITSKITS.

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the Pomona Pool, located on the grounds of Pomona State School. This pool has been an asset not only for the school but also for the whole local community, with many having enjoyed recreational swimming, squad, learn to swim classes and other activities over the years. Much excitement therefore met the announcement in May this year that, after years of hard work and grant applications by a group of determined parents, over $26000 funding had finally been obtained through the Community Gambling Benefit Fund to heat the pool, allowing for comfortable swimming for 9 months of the year. This heating system has now been installed and Pomona State School students have been reaping the benefits of water up to 28 degrees on cool mornings. The children swim in terms 1 and 4, with swimming being recognised as an important part of the school’s curriculum in addition to its benefits for students’ health and social wellbeing. Whilst the school’s students are currently enjoying the 6

pool, it is with great regret that a licencee has been unable to be secured to operate the pool outside school hours for this summer season. There is a huge demand for community use of the pool, not just by school families looking for extra swim coaching for their children but also by local residents who are looking to keep active.

Their latest venture is a Youtube clip, which can be found on their Facebook page, or go to Youtube 'misfits student teacher'. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Masf5JKxBX4

The location is on the Kin Kin Oval, behind the Country Life Hotel. Great local art and craft, food and coffee, face painting for the kids, music and much more. Visit the markets in the morning and enjoy a delicious cafe style lunch at Black Ant Gourmet or relax and listen to local music talent, lunch and a drink at the Country Life Hotel.

Hinterland Theatre Coming Alive Hinterland residents turned out in force for Talking Up Hinterland Theatre at the Majestic Theatre on 25 November 2014. The community conversation was part of a research and development project being undertaken by the Farmhouse Theatre Company in Cooran.

Participants were asked to share their views on what makes a great night out at the theatre. By reflecting on past experiences and dreaming up future hinterland shows, all sorts of ideas and themes were raised including: the fun of dressing up, seeing local actors on stage, being transported from everyday life, enjoying a meal and theatre, the power of story telling and conserving local Community conversation, networking and connecting people was the purpose at the Hinterland history. Noosa biosphere structure other world biosphere an international example reserves," Cr Wellington said. Noosa Councillor, Tony Wellington says Noosa Biosphere Reserve's new management structure could become a model for other biospheres worldwide. It follows a meeting of representatives of the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves, hosted by Noosa Council and Noosa Biosphere Limited.

Council this week adopted the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Trust and the Constitution of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Ltd - an important step toward implementing the new model Council adopted earlier this year following extensive community consultation. Cr Wellington said Noosa was fortunate that its biosphere reserve was wholly contained within one local government area.

Representatives from biosphere reserves across Australia were among those to "It was also evident at the attend. conference that biosphere "What became very obvious reserves, particularly in from the conference was that Australia, that had to deal Noosa Biosphere Reserve was with multiple local better resourced, better governments and authorities understood and had greater had much more difficulty with community engagement than both resourcing and decisionother biosphere reserves making," he said. represented. "During the conference, Mayor Noel Playford gave an address in which he detailed the change of management structure for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. This was very well received by attendees. Council has approved funding of $1200 and $1500 for Kin Kin Community Group and the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, respectively, to deliver Christmas events this year. Mayor Noel Playford said Council assessed the club's applications early to ensure the funds were delivered ahead of the festive season. "These funds will help deliver Christmas spirit to the hinterland."

Noosa Community Care’s farm fun day a hit Noosa Community Care clients were entertained by a host of cuddly creatures today at the centre’s Animal Farm Fun Day. Ducks, lambs, chickens and goats were among the pint-sized special guests who were well-received by clients of all ages. Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot, who attended the farm day, said: “This service has been doing a fine job for many years and today’s event is all about giving our clients an enjoyable day and letting the community know about the services available”. Noosa Community Care’s Coordinator Greg Tucker said more than 100 clients used the centre’s services from week to week. “People know that we are a respite centre for frail and elderly people and younger people with disabilities, but often they don’t realise that we have clients for a range of allied health services,” he said. These include speech, physiotherapy, pathology, podiatry, as well as social support which assists clients with tasks such as shopping and transport.

Winners take their chance in New Zealand

Above: Leslie Saunders, Bryce Hegarty, New Zealand runner Devina, Kim Beckinsale and Jan Leverton. Every year winners of Pomona’s Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge receive a scholarship to compete in New Zealand’s own King of the Mountain Race, the Kawerau King of the Mountain.

Saunders represented Australia at the event and produced some outstanding results. Running the race for the first time in 10 years, Kim Beckinsale came 2nd overall in the women’s division and 1st in the super vets.

The race is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and longest standing mountain races. Not for the fainthearted, it is a gruelling 8km to the summit of Mt Putauaki in the Bay of Plenty – 852 metres above sea level – nearly twice the distance of Pomona’s King of Mountain race.

Leslie Saunders, who competed in this gruelling competition for the first time in 2012 was placed 3rd overall in the women’s division and 1st in the vet women’s division.

Last month Kim Beckinsale, Bryce Hegarty and Leslie

Bryce Hegarty ran a personal best and placed 17th in the overall race. Congratulations to our Aussie competitors!

Anzacs equestrians remembered Local film maker James Muller will be filming interviews for the Anzac Equestrian History Project at the Cooroy RSL Community Hall Saturday 13th December 2014 and we encourage all who have stories, photos and memorabilia to get in touch with Charles Shewring, event organiser on 0417 792 944. The project is part of the Noosa Institute for SocioEconomic & Environmental Research (NISER) ‘Greater Sunshine Coast Anzac Equestrian History Project. NISER successfully secured Queensland and Federal government funding of $30,000 to undertake the project culminating with a launch and screening at Cooroy RSL for Anzac Day celebrations 2015. The project is centered on recounting and recording on film the local Sunshine Coast ANZAC Equestrian History

based on those who served in WW1. It will outline the strong contribution of manpower and horses made by the Light Horsemen who enlisted from the Greater Sunshine Coast region. Many of the light horsemen and their horses came from the region especially the hinterland areas and we are researching, interviewing and filming local people with a connection including descendants.. In addition, the equestrian history is being recounted via additional filmed interviews and footage of local equestrian and re-enactment troops Gympie & Maleny as well as from local remembrance events. The project has strong support from the Sunshine Coast film industry, local equestrian groups and organisations and reenactment troops. We also

have approval and in-kind support from local RSL clubs such as the Cooroy RSL who will launch the DVD in 2015 as well as RSL Queensland who are providing support and links to RSL clubs and the local Anzac history. We believe that the Anzac Equestrian history is a substantially untold story and we intend to tell the story and to presence the great Anzac spirit and their influence which is alive

today. A commemorative DVD will also enhance local historical education, community understanding and celebrations to mark the Centenary of ANZAC. Once again, if you have a connection or material relating to the Light Horse Anzac’s please call Charles 0417 792 944 to arrange filming on 13th December at the Cooroy Community Hall.

University scholarship up for grabs thanks to Community Bank One Year 12 student from Noosa District State High School will soon be adding to their graduation celebrations. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has now pledged its support to one local student when their new scholarship program application period opens in early December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2015,” Geoff said.

PLOD’S PAGE Heat: Policing is one of those “front row seat on life” occupations and we do see a lot of life in the course of a year!

by Dan McNamara, Pomona Police

There’s also no doubt the hotter months generally get busier for Police for a number of reasons. The warmer months and summer school holidays substantially increase activity on our roads, licensed venues get busier and people drink more grog at home and at BBQ’s and parties.

small glass of wine, 1 x 375ml can of light beer, 1 x 60ml glass of Port.

Tempers can understandably become frayed on breezeless 40 degrees plus days and normally close partners may find previously cute and quirky traits become intolerable! What follows this increased activity and alcohol consumption is often crime such as assaults, Domestic Violence and traffic crashes. So how to limit the carnage?

When we process drink drivers one of our questions is type and time of last meal before being stopped by police.

Responsible service and consumption of alcohol: *Planning: If travelling, designate a driver who will stay below the limit or even better, not drink at all, and offer to do the same for them next time.

Phone: 5485 2586

*Food: Watching your waist by just drinking and skipping the food wouldn’t impress Nigella and won’t help your chances of keeping your license.

A standard response is “yesterday”, “can’t remember” or “is a cocktail food?” Eating something substantial prior and during your drinking will considerably slow down the absorption of alcohol and providing food makes you a good and responsible party host.

Be a mate: Means what is says, look out for your friends and family if they Honestly, we get this a lot at RBT sites overdo it. of Mount Cooroora, seriously endangering users of the National Park and potentially the town with its fallout. We are currently following up lines of enquiry in relation to this. The actions of this individual may one day take a life if not stopped and we urge anyone in the community with information to contact us or crime stoppers on 1800 333 000. Some, we believe juvenile, offenders damaged the new QFRS construction site shed in Reserve street and the Factory street Church on the evening of Saturday the 15th of November with graffiti. We’re following up video surveillance in the area and hope to have it solved shortly. Any information gratefully accepted. Hope: One of the few downsides to the festive season is the increase in depression and isolation of vulnerable members of our community. Life isn’t the Brady bunch, but most of us at least enjoy the company and support of family and friends over the Xmas break. There is a noticeable increase in depression and suicides over XMAS and especially in the new year, as a tough 12 months ends and there appears to be no hope for better times. Can we ask you think about the downtrodden, marginalised, vulnerable ones and see what you can do to help. Often just listening and giving them your time will let them know they’re not alone, someone cares and provide hope for better times. We sincerely wish you all a very happy and safe festive season.
