Bendigo Bank’s Pomona agency open It’s time. After months of preparation, Pomona’s very own Bendigo Bank Agency has opened. Located at 3 Station Street, the agency will initially service Pomona and the Noosa hinterland three days a week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am - 3.00pm. Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited, Rick Cooper said the agency will provide residents, traders and community groups with an alternative, locally-owned banking option. “The Cooroy community has already seen the benefits a local banking service can bring, both in terms of easy access to banking, and the reinvestment of Above Left to Right: Rob Chittick, Pam Hoens, Rick Cooper, Stephen Hilditch, Laurie Taylor, profits back into the local community,” Heather Manders, Geoff Edwards. Mr. Cooper said. The agency will offer transaction and lending services, be able to process home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards.

In the next few I think it’s going to be a great addition weeks, an ATM will also be installed as to Pomona’s business community and

New bank creates Be prepared for new adventures excitement with customer support From page 2 We know there’s great excitement about Pomona having a real say in its own future, and the new agency will be a chance to exercise that. Pam Hoens and the team are excited and ready to assist locals with their banking needs,” he said. Locals have made it clear for many months they wanted a bank of their own. To that end, the opening of the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank has been months in the planning. “As we’ve shared with the community in the past few months, our message is simple - the more support the Pomona agency receives, the more support we can give the community. Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money can go back into the community. As one of the new agency’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Mr. Cooper concluded. Agencies represent about 20 percent of Bendigo Bank’s retail outlets and the new Pomona agency Branch will be fully supported by our Cooroy Community Bank branch staff. Manager Geoff Edwards will continue to be based in Cooroy and Customer Relationship Officer, Pam Hoens will now occupy her office in the Pomona Agency during opening hours. If you have any questions regarding the new agency, call Geoff, Pam and the team on 5447 7131 at Cooroy, or at Pomona Agency during opening hours on 5485 1786 or Pam on mobile on 0435 537 187 for further information.

Well, you’ve probably guessed by now the organisation is Scouts Australia. But, did you know there is a Scout Den right here in Cooroy? It’s powered by an exciting group of local volunteers and parents and they’re off to an exciting start in 2015. Sally Clarke is the Group Leader and was keen to continue growing the group’s numbers. So last year, she decided to write to the Cooroy Community Bank branch and ask for some financial support.

“These Scouts will be the first to use the new tents, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the Cooroy Community Bank branch. We now look forward to supporting them the way they’ve supported us. That’s what makes community work,” Sally added. Karl Doss said apart from the daily enjoyment of serving customers in the branch, this is the best part of his job.

Firies honour former mate in Shave for a Cure dare Profound regard for a former mate is motivating the members of the Pomona Auxilliary Fire Brigade to stage one of the town’s major events of the year in support of the campaign to battle blood cancer. Eight firies and Cory Harris of Pomona True Value hardware will have their heads shaved at a gala night to be held at the Pomona Memorial Hall on Friday 17 April, beginning at 6pm. Entry is free for all who wish to attend. The Shave for a Cure challenge is an initiative of the Australian Leukaemia Foundation in support of people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. Last year, the Pomona brigade lost Robert Meinert, a member of 10 years standing, to blood disease, so this month’s event will be held in his honour.

Local businesses have come on board, donating substantial gifts as prizes – among them a two-hour Harley Davidson bike ride and morning tea and a camphor laurel table. There will be numerous other prizes and giveaways. For the children, the Blaze-R-Bear character will be available for photos, and he will pass on fire safety tips. The Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club will be catering barbecue food on the night. The team from Pomona’s Hairolicious Salon will provide the shaving equipment and hairdressers.

Pomona Fire Service captain, Sam Spink, said that, although tinged with sadness at the loss of a dear mate, the local Shave for a Cure challenge was a fitting way to honour his memory.

Finishing touches made to Pomona’s new fire station Pomona’s new $1.5 million fire station will open this month, consigning the old station building in a floodprone section of Factory Street to obsolescence. The fate of the old station is unclear since the Pomona Men’s Shed Group abandoned plans to locate there and chose, instead, the old forestry shed in School Street as its new headquarters. The Pomona Auxiliary fire crew are anxiously awaiting the handover of the spacious new building on a prominent site in Reserve Street from the contractor to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. The complex consists of a two-bay shed for a fire appliance and special four-wheel drive fire-fighting vehicle. The adjacent building contains offices, a training room, equipment storerooms, kitchen, toilets and showers.

An extensive sealed area at the rear is available for parking and for training purposes, not only for the Pomona crew, but for fire-fighting personnel from surrounding brigades. While the contractor finishes off the building proper, Noosa Landcare has been engaged to landscape the surrounds. Meanwhile, the ambulance station next door is due for repainting, according to a heritage colour scheme devised by Noosa Council.

POPPIES FROM POMONA FIND THEIR WAY TO GALLIPOLI

International Women’s Day Raises $800.00 for charity

Following on from their delightful display of poppies in Pomona on Remembrance Day 2014, Elsie McKinley and her fellow yarn bomber friends have knitted and crocheted hundreds more poppies to be part of Anzac Day Memorials across the country.

On Saturday March 7th nearly 60 women gathered in Pomona Memorial Hall for the Pomona Community House’s annual International Women’s Day morning tea.

While many of the poppies will stay locally in Pomona and Noosa, some will become part of a massive field of handmade poppies in Fed Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015. These have been contributed through the 5000 Poppies project which aims to “plant” a stunning visual tribute to Australian servicemen and women. Others poppies will even be sent as far afield as Gallipoli. Izzy Chapman, from the Mountain Stop Café in Pomona, was so thrilled with the poppies she was given on Remembrance Day last year, that she asked the knitters if they could possibly make some for her Mum, Sylvia to take with her to the Centenary Memorial Service on Anzac Day later this month. Sylvia, 88, won one of the ballots to attend the service in Gallipoli. She will be going with Izzy’s brother, John. Sylvia and John will be honouring Izzy’s grandfather, Frederick Charles Priest who served at Gallipoli.

The theme for this year’s event, “Make It Happen!” brought together two vibrant women as guest speakers for the morning, Tracey Keller and Jody Allen. Artist Tracey Keller wowed the audience with the story of her recovery from an almost fatal accident to being the dynamic artist she is today. Her heartfelt reminiscing about her accident, life post-accident and the choices that have led her to being a successful, international artist moved and inspired everyone present. Jody Allen, creator of the Facebook phenomena, Stay at Home Mum, encouraged participants at the morning tea to follow their passions. She said that her Facebook page was an outcome of staying true to what she believes in and even now, any products advertised must match her high standards. Jody made running what is now a huge company, look easy and motivated many others to take action. Participants were overwhelmed with the generosity of our two speakers who both donated to raffles and who surprised the audience with giveaways and prizes. The amazing Doo Wop Dolls gave their time to perform their wonderful renditions of old favourite 50s and 60s tunes which had everyone up on their feet and having a great time. Every year funds raised from the International Women’s Day morning tea is donated to a deserving charity that supports women. This year $800.00 has been donated to PANDA (Post and Antenatal Depression Association). The Community House would like to thank our speakers, Tracey Weller and Jody Allen; the Doo Wop Dolls; Meals on Wheels; Dawn Gwynne and Helene Weller from Gilded Lily for the fabulous flowers and gluten-free delicacies; everyone who donated to the delicious morning tea; and not least our incredible Community House volunteers.

PLOD’S PAGE Crime: It appears some crooks did not embrace the new 90 km/h road speed signs on Pound road (recently reduced from 100) and decided to “redeploy” them over the last few weeks”. We’re following up on some information regarding this offence and for the honest locals, they should be pretty obvious trophies in these perps back yards at BBQ’s etc, such is their intellect.

DV: As far as Police jobs go, we prioritize those involving Domestic Violence (DV) over almost every other call for service. With DV involved in a significant percentage of homicides and serious assaults, we thoroughly assess and if necessary intervene, with support and DV protection order applications at an early stage. Currently there are task forces and inquiries being run at high levels to specifically address DV and its effects in the community, with early recommendations for increased criminal sanctions for offences, including immediate jail time for serious offenders, dedicated DV Courts, case management and enhanced support systems for long term cases 18

Phone: 5485 2586 alleged offender to fess up to his stupidity which most won’t, surprise!! We still appreciate the information, as often a visit from Plod deters the honest few, but largely these complaints go unsolved. A phone call when the offence is occurring with hopefully a rego number, would assist us better as we can sit off the address and wait for old mate, we often get better results that way.
