A project of The Cooroy & Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival continued its tradition of offering something for everyone with popular car displays, markets, animal farm, antiques fair, live entertainment and food stalls

Previous race achievements include the Empire State Building, Sydney Tower, Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Hong Kong ICC and Taipei 101.
For the second year running, the Queen of the Mountain was awarded to local primary school teacher Leslie With a field of 94 runners, the title of Saunders. Leslie’s passion for the race King of the Mountain went to Mark saw her devote much of her time, in Bourne who ran a time of 23:53. Mark the lead up to coaching and training is the 2016 Mountain Running with the Prince and Princess Race Champion and Australian Team entrants. Continued page 2

Also an Australian running champion, Leslie won the 2015 women’s outright and placed 1st in the Veteran category. Other achievements include winning the veteran categories in Kawerau New Zealand in 2014 and 2015. The growing international appeal and reputation of the famous Pomona race is evident in the second and third place winners coming from New Zealand and England.

The inaugural Zinc 96.1 Prince and Princess race held on Saturday 23 July saw almost 60 children compete along a 3.4km track for the first entry in the record books. Aimed at children between 9-13 years of age, the honour of Prince of the Mountain went to Jack Pearson, aged 12 with the Princess title awarded to Lee Cleary, aged 13. Spurred on by his win, Jack went on to compete in Sunday’s Nestle 3km Family Fun Run, taking out an impressive 1st place in his age category. Festival a top day out From page 2 Event organiser Heather Manders said the King of the Mountain Festival owes its ongoing success to sponsorships from the local business community and the efforts of hard working volunteers. ‘An event of this scale simply isn’t possible without the support and help of our local community. Our volunteers work tirelessly over many months to provide a festival that offers opportunities for people to actively participate in a multitude of event inclusions and attractions’ Ms Manders said. ‘We want to thank everyone who came along to the 2016 King of the Mountain festival. The success of the community focused event means the Cooroy-Pomona Lions can continue to fund school programs and provide support and assistance to many local charities’ she said.

NOOSA COUNTRY SHOW - September 9 & 10
Two stages, two days and two nights of fun There are only five weeks to go until the biggest Noosa Country Show ever on September 9 and 10. More animals events, a bigger array of entertainment and an expanded side show alley are all coming to the Pomona Showgrounds. In all, a total of 18 competition sections means there is something for everyone. An exhibitor's discount entry of only $10 applies for the entire show. The Radiators, a popular band, is headlining an awesome line-up of entertainment, including X Factor's Jimmie Davis, a Laser Light Spectacular, to be followed by KC Fireworks and a Monster Trucks demonstration on Friday evening. Friday night is also Rock and Roll Party night with Kevin Barker and the Beagle Babes and heaps of special guests. On Saturday, the featured events include the Honky Tonk Rodeo, with amateur and pro barrel racing, saddle bronc, bareback, poddy calves and, of course, the bull ride. After the rodeo Smokin' Mirrors will be pumping out the tunes with Burlesque L' Amour. Over two days and two nights, two stages will be jammed with great bands, including Gypsy Hawk, Big Bob's Blues Band, Robin and The Hoods, Konspiracy Killers, Barry Charles, Miss Leading, dancers and family entertainment. Cooran first to get new railway station platform Cooran will be the first of three Noosa Hinterland communities with temporary railway platform facilities to have a permanent platform installed under a $3 million plan being implemented by Queensland Rail (QR). The town will have its new station by the end of the year. Design work continues for the other stations at Eumundi and Pomona, which will be the last of the three to be rebuilt. Designs for the Pomona station are likely to be ready by the end of September. Each station will close for up to 12 weeks, with passengers bussed to adjoining stations, in order to allow work crews to dismantle the scaffold and plywood temporary station platforms and put new ones in their place.

Dr Pages Road upgrade a win for hinterland tourism In the short time it has been sealed, Dr Pages Road at Kin Kin is already attracting an additional 100 vehicles a day, proving the project’s worth as a catalyst for boosting tourist visitations to the Noosa Hinterland. Coupled with a new computer app map and web-based promotion by Tourism Noosa, the ‘Noosa Country Drive’ concept is set to enhance the region’s local economy. Local real estate agents are reporting increased interest from those seeking to build cabins and other rural-based accommodation for tourists, as the commercial spin-offs from the country drive concept begin to be realised. Former Noosa Mayor Noel Playford cut the ribbon on the Dr Pages Road upgrade last month, saying it fulfilled one of his promises upon becoming mayor following deamalgamation and also a 20-year dream to provide a sealed road tourist circuit. The significance of the work is highlighted by the fact that some hire-car agreements prohibit vehicles being driven on unsealed roads. “As a result of this project, residents and tourists can now enjoy a round trip from Tewantin out through the hinterland towns of Boreen Point, Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy without travelling on a single gravel road,” Mr Playford said.
The Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery funding program contributed $1,826,696 towards the project cost. Noosa Council Planning and Infrastructure Director Martin Drydale said: “By designing the road upgrade in-house, Council has been able to keep costs down, avoid the need for property acquisitions and minimise environmental impacts.” Mayor Tony Wellington said: “More trees have been protected than is usual for a road construction project, and where the road crosses waterways, we’ve minimised environmental impacts through clever design. The road also now has Q10 flood immunity.” At the time the Noosa Country Drive initiative was launched late last year, Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said tourists now had the tools to personalise the hinterland experience – on-line, via a map detailing a northern, central and southern loop, or simply by following road signs from village to village. Tourism Noosa is also discussing with the Department of Transport and Main Roads prominent signage pointing the way to the Noosa Country Drive from the reconstructed Bruce Highway past Cooroy and Pomona.

Council and DTMR tackle regional road issues The July meeting of Noosa Council’s Services and Organisation Committee received a comprehensive report on actions being taken within the council and by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) to address a number of traffic safety issues across the hinterland. The recommendations came from a joint state-council Traffic Advisory and Speed Management Committee that meets quarterly to consider traffic issues identified by council officers, or referred to it following complaints from the public. The Services and Organisation Committee, chaired by Cr Frank Pardon, was told that Noosa Council has been successful in obtaining a $21,450 Community Road Safety grant to meet the cost of a variable message sign (VMS) and speed radar that will be placed at various locations around the shire to warn motorists that they are travelling above the speed limit. The sign will also display road safety messages. “With input from DTMR, Queensland Police and customer requests, a roster has been developed for the deployment of the VMS and speed radar to provide immediate treatment for known road safety issues in the area,” a report to the committee stated. The department will act on motorists’ complaints about bushes and shrubs impeding visibility at the
Elm Street–Yurol Forest Drive intersection.
Transport and Main Roads for consideration.
The problem is especially noticeable to drivers of vehicles turning right into Yurol Forest Drive. A maintenance crew will be dispatched to trim the trees and undergrowth.
The council also has initiated a project that would result in bollards being installed along the Hospital Street frontage of Stan Topper Park, the scene of a fatal accident in February when a woman was killed after a car rolled down the slope of the park and into the crowd at a market day.
The committee was informed that DTMR had changed the speed limits on the Cooroy Connection Road east of the off-ramp at the new North Cooroy Interchange with the Bruce Highway. The speed has been reduced to 80kph between the highway off ramp and just past the Yurol Forest Drive merge intersection;

Pomona Pacers - Meet two of our amazing walkers By Helen Randall’s My name is Helen and I joined the Pomona Pacers Heart Foundation walking group in May 2015. Pomona is a lovely friendly town on the Sunshine Coast and we are surrounded by beautiful forest walking tracks that our group enjoys exploring when we get together every week day. I joined the Pomona Pacers after my daughter (a marathon runner) kept nagging me to join the walking group. I had been walking solo with my dog along the forest trails near my home and as it was rather lonely I thought my daughter had a good idea and as it turned out it was the best idea ever. I know that I am lucky that at 66 my heart, general health and fitness are all good. However, things changed dramatically around six months ago when I was diagnosed with dementia. Yes, it was a shock but believe me the lovely caring people in our walking group have made this adjustment so much easier. I was advised by the physician to keep walking and stay fit – and to keep up my social contacts. Well how lucky I am to have my Pomona Pacers buddies to walk with. The exercise is important but the friendship, chatter and laughter is what keeps me going. We walk and talk but it’s more than walking. We share coffee on Wednesdays when the group gets even bigger with partners and friends popping in. We

Treasured memories From page 10 By Karen Gosling Denise Ruttley has been walking with the Pomona Pacers for several years after being encouraged by her neighbour to come along. Denise fitted in easily and has been a wonderful support to many people in the group. She always keeps an eye on those who may be a bit down or unwell and gently helps wherever she can. Oh yes, and we all enjoy the great produce she and husband John very kindly share with us. Denise always has time for a laugh and can see the funny side to life. We are also grateful for her strong vocal chords when she lets us know there is traffic approaching. Car! One of Denise’s many talents is scrapbooking and we are very touched that Denise has produced a beautiful album dedicated to a year in the life of the Pomona Pacers. Denise has been collecting group photos and a few candid shots on our walks and outings for some months now as she builds a library of happy memories of our walking group. With great care and affection Denise has spent hours putting together this book of moments and memories of the Pomona Pacers. As walkers come and go in our group Denise has shone a spotlight on the friendship that has grown within our group. Not a day passes without members of the group sharing coffee, swapping plants, or planning a shopping trip. Would you like to join us? Dream comes true for Leigh with new Shoebox Gallery

Above: Leigh Hooker with her beautiful works of art. Celebrations in Pavilion Street, Pomona, when local artist Leigh Hooker opened her Shoebox Gallery. Sixteen months, of planning and hard work, culminated in the fulfilment of a dream to have her own gallery – in a converted container – set amidst an enchanting garden. A dragon sculpture, made by Leigh, looked quite at home in the garden. Leigh, in her opening speech, thanked all who helped her, especially husband Russell for his patience and hard work. Leigh laughed as she said, “I sat down, one day, sixteen months ago and told Russell that a container was being delivered within four days. I had to convince him that it was going to be an Art Gallery, not a man shed.”
Leigh thanked her parents, Verna and Brian, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon on the doors to the gallery. She also thanked Skye, Lowanna and Stevie, her children, for their help. Skye Lyons, came up from Gerringong, New South Wales, especially for the opening. Skye was the caterer, serving delicious food to the thirty guests. The Shoebox Gallery, at 1 Pavilion Street, will be open, every week, on Friday and Saturday, from 9 30 am to 3 pm.

Introducing the ‘Know Your Bliss’ program. Noosa Council and Options 4U Op shop is providing FREE adult programs that enable you to try out a series of new and different exercise activities. Activities include Yoga, Pilates, Qi Gong, Falls Prevention and Meditation. Each class runs for 1 to 1.5 hours over 4 weeks and is absolutely FREE. Sunshine Butterflies is a local disability support service and charity that supports babies, children, teens and adults with disabilities and their families.

Pomona State School year 6 students are still buzzing with excitement over the work they completed in Term 2. It was a brilliant unit packed with hands on learning, group work and physical activity. The term culminated with a movie premier afternoon where the students got to showcase their new skills and assessment. In particular the children’s movies and homes were a real hit as was the parents versus student game of Tennis Rounders and Dodge Ball to finish off the day. The enjoyment the students had last term is evident through their thoughts on the unit.
Tyler Lutzke and Eilean Lough: “We loved that we got to make a choice on the type of assessment tasks we did. We really enjoyed the added responsibility of being in control of our own learning and being able to work on tasks at home.” Riku Genis and Zane Swinkles believe “Building the house and having a really good finished product was very rewarding. We never knew acting and getting into costume could be so much fun. The assessment tasks were really, really cool, we still had to write a bit but we really got to do hands-on tasks and working in groups was awesome.”

Cooroy hosts annual dinner with the Mayor For many years, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has hosted the annual Dinner with the Mayor event. The event has become a highlight of the Cooroy calendar and is informative as well as being a great social night. The tradition continues this year with Mayor Tony Wellington on Tuesday 23 August at the Cooroy RSL. “Dinner with the Mayor is a great tradition that started over a decade ago and has continued with all the Mayors since. Tony Wellington will be our fourth mayor to join the tradition. It is quite a social night and everyone always enjoys themselves plus it is an enjoyable way to hear the latest news about the region,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor.

Families, youngsters and our elders are all becoming keen to find a sport and leisure activity that can be enjoyed to promote health and togetherness at all levels. Table tennis is being played in Pomona, hidden from the adverse effects of the weather, set in the light and airy Primary School hall. With five championship tables available, the atmosphere for fun filled exercise has been created. Beginners, intermediates and anyone that revels in a sporting challenge, mingle to topspin and slice the forgiving white or yellow ball.

At this year’s King of the Mountain festival the Pomona Table Tennis Group invited all to a special marquee, set up to promote the game of table tennis. Visitors were encouraged to face the “mean robot”, firing relentlessly at the brave contestants – red faced and satisfied to have given the android a run for its money. Players rekindled their love for the game of table tennis. We are looking forward to welcoming new players to our Wednesday and Friday nights sessions from 5 PM onwards. Get in the swim at revamped Pomona pool If your reason for not using the Pomona Swimming Pool is that it is a tad too cold, then you have just run out of excuses. The pool is a community facility, open to the public, in a stunning natural setting beside the Pomona State School. It has undergone a makeover during the winter break and will re-open this month (August) to offer serious aquafit and recreational swimmers inviting waters capable of being heated to 28 degrees Celcius. The refit of the pool, which is more than 30 years old, was made possible using a $28,000 state government grant. The swimming season at Pomona can now be extended to nine months of the year. The improvements include two 55kW heating systems, installation of a heat pump for the showers, a repainted pool surface, new pool blankets and a pace clock for squad work. Pool lessee and coach, Greg Rogers, said the Pomona School Principal, Alyson Covey, had been proactive and supportive of the makeover. Thanks are due also to a very active ‘heat the pool’ committee. Greg, a dual Olympian and medallist, said: “Alyson and staff have been visionary for the school and the community and are to be commended for the project.”
