Cameras check condition of the region’s footpaths The next time you complain to the Sunshine Coast Council about the condition of any footpath across our hinterland towns, the council engineering staff will be able to conduct an on-the-spot inspection without leaving the comfort of their office chairs. For the past three weeks, Karl McDermott (pictured) and his mates have been riding quad bikes fitted with computeroperated cameras along 600km of footpaths throughout the Sunshine Coast, taking millions of photographs of the concrete and bitumen surfaces. The footpath condition profiling then becomes a computer program similar to Google Earth, able to be viewed on any council computer screen. Karl is an employee of Sydneybased Infrastructure Management Group, which won the contract for the footpath photography job. His bike and its camera equipment are worth more than $60,000.
Noosa Council website informs ratepayers of transition progress
A website has been launched to report progress towards a new Noosa Council. While the new council will operate a fully-functional website from 1 January 2014, Noosa Transfer Manager, Peter Franks, said an interim website would inform the community of all aspects of the
development of the new council. “It is dedicated in providing up to date information on a range of issues the Noosa Transfer Team will be dealing with over the next six months,” Peter said. MORE INFORMATION The website may be viewed at www.noosatt.qld.gov.au.

Tourism volunteers experience the Hinterland sights
More visitors expected here
Tourism Noosa’s general manager, Damien Massingham, said the tours for volunteers ensured that frontline staff had excellent knowledge of the region when assisting more than 200,000 people who passed through the Hastings Street visitor information centre every year.
Visitor information centre manager, Cathy Mitchell, said last month’s tour had focussed on the greater Noosa Hinterland. Cooroy was the focus of a previous tour. The volunteers had morning tea at Pomona Community House and undertook a shortened Pomona Heritage Walk via The Old Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery and the Majestic Theatre, as well as a visit to the Noosa Museum.
The group visited Cooran where passionate local, Alison Napier, spoke of the town’s history. The group then headed to Kin Kin, where the next stop was Taking a break to admire the amazing sculpture garden that Steve Steve Weis’ art gallery. As part of a strategy to better promote the Noosa Hinterland to visitors, 40 volunteers who regularly staff Tourism Noosa’s information centres toured the area recently to familiarise themselves with its attractions. The tour was one of four that the volunteers undertake throughout the year so they remain up to date with information about natural features, tours, activities, art galleries and restaurants across the Noosa region.

Property valuers Herron Todd White (HTW) are recommending that real estate investors consider buying into Sunshine Coast railway towns that have good amenities and a community feel, the website Property Investors reported in July. The interesting news is that Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona are on HTW’s list of towns to watch. The firm reports that the value price point threshold is around $350,000. Rural residential land across the hinterland is also on HTW’s investment radar, although the scales seem balanced in the buyer’s favour. The company’s July ‘month in review’ says older acreage properties close to hinterland towns tend to be below what it costs to develop/replace the property as new, and bear watching. “This, you would have to think, should hold you in good stead in the future as the strengthening market moves out to these areas,” the publication reports. It said that a normally subdued market in winter and an impending federal election were dampeners on the market at the moment. Some vendors may be pinched.

You know that your family canine is a champion, even if the judges at Crufts – the world’s premier dog judging event – would scoff at its doubtful pedigree. There’s no such restriction at this year’s Noosa Country Show, to be held at Pomona on 6 and 7 September, when ‘best dog in show’ could be your friendly mutt.
6pm on the Friday night, to be followed by popular family fireworks and music organised by the Australian Institute of Country Music. (It’s not just country music either.) The Honky-Tonk Rodeo kicks off at 7pm on the Saturday night.
The grand parade, showcasing the best of Noosa country life, will be held at 1.30pm on the Friday and Saturday of the two-day show.
“We’ve picked up on the increased interest in home cooking and backyard vegetables, as well as rural activities occurring on small-acre farms across the Noosa Hinterland. All of these have a place in this year’s show.”

For first-time steward, Robert Gray, the explosion of interest in woodcraft can be explained in two words – baby boomers. “The old boys are retiring and they need to do something with their hands,” he said. Cooroora Woodworkers will be represented strongly, while there will be wood craft exhibits from local high schools in 2014. The gentle and rewarding art of honey production is recognised by a new apiculture section in this year’s show. Apiarists from Gympie to Imbil and Cooroy are vying for honours across several categories, under the watchful eye of steward Pauline Alexander. Judges will be assessing entries on density, taste colour and clarity. The show revitalisation theme
extends to horticulture and vegetables. Lorraine Fraley explained the new category of ‘kids in the garden’. “As well, there is a primary school challenge, where we are looking for the best box of vegetables, any variety or number, exhibited by a primary school group or individual. We expect laughs from youngsters, as well as older gardeners in the ‘oddest-shaped vegetable class’,” she said. Wendy Catlin, of Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery, will be steward for the popular art section, which this year features a watery theme. See the exhibits and meet the artists at the H20 Exhibition Opening and Awards Presentation in the squash courts on the eve of the show, Thursday 5 September, from 6pm.

Drinkers toast pub plans by new managers The grand dame of Pomona’s past and pride of its future – the town pub – is about to get a new lease of life from two business partners bursting with ideas to bring new vitality to its rooms and bars.
“Pomona spills out community spirit like no other town,” Brian said of his new home. He will live in the pub initially, while refurbishment continues. Andrew will be ‘mine host’.
New French doors will connect the bar to the beer garden, which again will be a venue for live music. The separate bottle shop in Memorial Avenue has been re-badged as a Bottle-Mart franchise that will offer city prices once current stock is sold out. Negotiations are underway to bring back a TAB outlet.
They are investigating using the newly-installed screen for special nights, including sporting events. Brian proposes to use his camera skills to record local sporting matches and screen them for players and friends. Of course, he’s hoping that they will buy a beer or two while they watch.

Submissions called for new fire station The Queensland Government has begun the process of declaring land beside the Pomona Ambulance station in Reserve Street a formal emergency services precinct suitable for development of a new fire station. The designation under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 allows the state to override council regulations, if necessary, to build community infrastructure. The land covered by the designation is located at 9– 17 Reserve Street and includes the ambulance station, which will be repainted as part of the emergency services precinct proposal. The Department of Community Safety has sought public comment on the proposal during the period Tuesday 23 July to Wednesday 14 August 2013. A copy of the plans may be requested from the department’s senior planning and property
officer, Rachael Harmston, telephone 3635 3303. Written submissions concerning the designation must be marked ‘Designation for the Pomona Emergency Services Precinct’ and should be addressed to Ms Harmston at the Infrastructure and Procurement Branch, Department of Community Safety, GPO Box 1425, Brisbane 4001, to be received on or before 14 August. The state government has allocated $75,000 for preliminary work on the new fire station site in 2013– 14. This covers earthworks, with construction of the new station yet to be funded. Construction funding is expected to be allocated in the 2014–15 financial year. MORE INFORMATION Rachael Harmston Ph: 3635 3303 Email: rachael.harmston@dcs. qld.gov.au.

‘There are no plans to change the operation of the Pomona works depot and it will continue at its current location into the foreseeable future. I see it as an important part of council service delivery for the hinterland community.’
THE TRANSITION
Working groups established By PETER FRANKS Noosa Transition Manger The Noosa Transfer Team operates working groups, each tasked with developing and implementing action plans across seven specific areas – assets, services, finances, human resources, planning, governance and information technology (IT). In striving to have a working organisation in place by 1 January 2014, the most important issue is ensuring that the core IT systems are established and operational. These are the ‘must have’ IT systems critical council operations from day one. They cover services such as paying suppliers and staff, managing financial records and migrating to a Noosa-specific computer system records such as customer service requests and planning applications. The services are essential for ensuring a seamless transition to the new council.
likely, will not be running from 1 January. So while we may not be able to lodge or track a customer service request on-line from day one, you can be assured normal council services will continue to be delivered. For example, waste will be collected, as usual, and your local parks and gardens maintained. Hopefully, you will notice improvements on current service levels. There are, I know, specific issues of concern to the people of the hinterland. Firstly, there are no plans to change the operation of the Pomona works depot and it will continue operating at its current location into the foreseeable future. I see the depot as an important part of council service delivery for the hinterland community.
Secondly, the Kin Kin community is concerned about the impacts of a nearby quarry. I understand those concerns. I intend briefing the new council fully on these matters when it Next, the team will look at important comes into being on 1 January. am sure the new council will do whatever it can to limit them. The transfer team has launched a new website (www.noosatt.qld.gov.au) to keep the community up to date on progress towards its new Noosa Council. While a full Noosa Council website will be developed over the coming months, it is important we have a simple, interim website to provide key information. Its role is to keep you informed on all aspects of development towards the new council. I assure the community that I am doing everything possible to minimise costs associated with establishing the new Noosa Council as it breaks away from the Sunshine Coast Council. It is difficult to identify what all the costs will be – there are still many unknowns. I am aiming to keep the costs below the $13 million Queensland Treasury Corporation estimate. Finally, if there are any individuals, community groups or businesses that would like to meet me, feel free to contact me directly, peter.franks@noosa.qld.gov.au.
Food e-trail a boost for rural producers Noosa Farmers Market is set to launch an internet website that will bring restaurants in touch with rural producers across the hinterland and allow individuals to search for information about the products available and where farms are located. The development of the Noosa food e-trail eventually could lead to a wine and food tourism experience based around information about farmers, their unique quality products and Google map reference point. The initiative follows revelation that the total value of agribusiness across the Sunshine Coast exceeds $200 million annually and could be developed further. The owner of the Noosa Farmers Market, Shane Stanley,
Visitors will be able to do the same, noting whether the farm or winery is open to the public and what the opening times are,” Shane said.
is behind the e-food trail site, which will be launched this month. Its $16,000 development costs has been met partly from the Sunshine Coast Council, which supports a similar electronic database, www.seasonsofthesun.com.au. “Restaurateurs wanting to source a particular product could go to this site and type in ‘tomato’, or whatever product they need locally and the information will appear.
He hopes about 350 producers can be listed initially, using the Noosa markets’ database and information from the council’s economic development unit. “Once the food e -trail is operating, we are sure to hear from a lot more. It is about locals linking to locals and strengthening the economy.” A launch of the site is being planned. Tim Lang won Best Edible Landscape for his Dinner Garden home residence in Cooran. Cooran-based firm WD Architects then took home two sustainable architecture awards and the coveted Golden Glossy.
Kin Kin State School, after WD and Dinner Garden dominated the four previous awards, then went on to win the Edible Landscape professional category for their exemplary school garden. Noosa’s Wasabi Restaurant was also highly commended, with their Japanese culinary gardens in Pomona. “It was inspiring to feel that the Council and the Sunshine Coast community recognised and celebrated Dinner Garden’s work in local food production,” said Tim Lang. “I’m proud to be living in a part of the region where individuals, businesses and schools are setting best practice benchmarks for sustainability on the Sunshine Coast.”

Speaking from the Northern Territory, manager Dave Atkins said marketing would be undertaken at Voyager’s Yarrawonga factory, in Darwin’s southern suburbs, and via the internet, but with fast delivery effected to South-East Queensland through the Pomona assembly facility.
The various trailer models that Voyager is marketing at Pomona are transported from Darwin in sets of three – a fully assembled trailer with parts for another two packed inside. Efficient transport costs are achieved using backload capacity on trucks delivering to Darwin. “I use Bluescope Steel and quality spring components from Adelaide. Wherever possible, all parts are sourced from within Australia,” Dave said.
The owner of Pomona’s newest hair salon has a simple business philosophy - that clients should be attended by the one stylist across all treatments.

Pomona has a new business based around the assembly of four-wheel drive bush and box trailers from premises at the back of the Pomona Service Centre in Factory Street. Darwinbased Voyager Trailers, which has operated successfully for the past 20 years, is extending its network of distribution centres by establishing the Pomona outlet.
Jade has lived in Pomona for the past six years and has always wanted to start a business locally. “I am inspired to make the customer feel special and to give them confidence in their appearance,” Jade said. Hairolicious offers specials to regular clients.

Virtual office concept for Ray White Realty Ray White Realty has changed its operations at Pomona from a fully -staffed office to a ‘virtual office’ managed from its Gympie premises. The changes came into effect following handover of the Reserve Street land on which the office sits to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, which plans to build a fire station there. Office administrator, Karen Corbett, was quick to reassure people that the change to the office structure would not affect the everyday operations of Ray White Pomona. “Phone calls to Ray White Pomona (5485 0775) will be diverted to the Gympie office and administration will continue at Gympie, as has been the case during the past two years,” Karen said.
Astrid Stevenson (left), Rebecca van Straaten and Liz Bateman, the creator of the Cooran Connect Network, are among an active group of small business owners who have combined to explore ways they can grow their enterprises and strengthen the local economy.
The creator of Cooran’s first business networking event, Liz Bateman, received a hugely positive community response when more than 40 small business owners attended a June meeting that explored ways they could grow their businesses individually, and collectively. Liz has teamed up with Rebecca van Straaten of www.designdivaz.com and photographer Astrid Stevenson to establish Cooran Connect Network, as a social conduit for supporting and promoting local business and community opportunities. The Noosa Council Transition manager, Peter Franks, will be guest speaker at the forthcoming networking night on Thursday 22 August, from
6.30pm to 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by Malcolm Pollock at the Phoenix Room, 30 King Street Cooran, Catering is being gifted by Danielle Gonsal of ‘Ahara for Life’. Special teas will be available for sale. Liz Bateman said it was great to see a diversity of businesses and professional skills of those who attended the 19 June meeting. “The idea is to build a vibrant economical and social community. It is very satisfying to see businesses in Cooran grow through local interaction,” Liz said. For further information, contact Liz Bateman on phone 0409 584 262 or Rebecca van Straaten, phone 0400 414506.
Sales staff are still available on their mobile phones to answer inquiries and to arrange inspections. A search is underway for a new, permanent office.
