Local artists in demand @ Chic Image Local award winning artists Marilyn Spencer and Don Milner traveled to New Zealand recently to share their talent and artistic skills as tutors. Don, an award winning artist of many Qld awards, has had many of his paintings purchased by tourists from around the world. He is in great demand for his tuition at Chic Image Pomona. Don is also renowned for his generous and creative painting workshops where his many years of experience serve to encourage and inspire his students. His painting style has roots in the traditional, but more recently has been flavoured with a generous amount of Impressionism. Marilyn has over 40 years experience with art and loves all aspects of it and works in all mediums. She received her first public accolade through an art award in New Zealand some 35 years ago. She has gone on to grow her artistic process through exhibitions in Townsville, Buderim, Brisbane, Pomona, Noosa Regional Gallery and Harbourside Gallery. Both artists are very excited at having their work accepted by the Rotary Awards in Brisbane which will be judged in April. Marilyn now owns and operates ‘Chic Image’ Art Supplies and Framing and also tutors for beginners to experienced artists.

Recognising Community Volunteers Nominations Open for National Volunteer Week! Local Member for Gympie, David Gibson will be hosting his annual morning tea during the fourth week in May at Pomona & District Community House to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local volunteers make to the community for National Volunteers Week. “This is the second year we will be having a morning tea in Pomona and the 6th year in the electorate”, Mr Gibson said. “Volunteers do a great job in providing services and support for the local community and this is one way we can say thank you for their outstanding efforts over the past year.” “After the floods in Pomona earlier this year it is more important than ever that we take the time to pause and thank those around us who have made a significant difference to our community, and that is why I am hosting this morning tea.” “Volunteers provide and assist in the delivery of numerous services to the community ranging from sporting teams, delivery of meals to those in need and running local community events.

Marilyn can be contacted on 5485 1155 for workshops.

“We all know someone who deserves recognitions for their efforts and I would encourage community groups in the area to contact my office to nominate locals who should be recognised during National Volunteer Week in May” Mr Gibson said.

Since our request to members of our Community in the Cooroora Connect a couple of months ago to provide us with their experience in trying to have ADSL connected at their home we have received many horror stories.

HERITAGE DAY AT THE OLD POMONA RAIL STATION GALLERY Sunday 20th May 2012 The gallery will be open on this special Sunday to celebrate Pomona Heritage Day. Please stop by to enjoy some jazz tunes by local Jazz Due Peter and Rachael. The winning ticket for the Mary Valley Rattler half day family trip will also be drawn. If anyone has some good ole stories to share about the Rail Road Station from your youth or job, we would love to have you stop by to share them with visitors. Coffee and tea will be served.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

Time to clean out the Studio or Shop! Come and sell your art pieces that have been hidden away. Bring them out in the sunshine for others to see and possibly purchase to enjoy for many years to come. Old Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery 10 Station Street, Pomona, Qld 4568

We have since written to Telstra Countrywide, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and our local member Warren Truss pointing out our concerns. The Minister replied saying “Service providers such as Telstra are private companies and the Government is unable to intervene in commercial matters, including decisions such as upgrading telephone exchanges to support additional ADSL connections”. He pointed out that the National Broadband Network would fix the problem with Pomona likely to be served by fibre optic cable to premises (FTTP) but this will not be scheduled to take place in the next 3 years. Don’t hold your breath. The NBN is not expected to be complete until 2020. You can keep up to date on the roll out by visiting http:// www.nbnco.com.au/rollout/about-the-rollout/communitiesin-the-rollout.html?icid=pub%3Arollout%3A1yr%3Abod% 3Aall-towns-maps

(07) 5485 2950

Warren Truss replied saying Telstra is unwilling to spend capital funds on extending ADSL coverage because of uncertainty surrounding the advent of the NBN. He has raised the subject in Parliament in October 2010 and February 2012 without success.

Artist Studio Clean Out Sale Saturday, 16 June 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Nothing over $100 Entry cost is $10 per artist Registration forms will be available from May 14 to June 12

The program is already 12 months behind.

Pomona Pacers Summer is almost over, the days are getting shorter and mornings are cooler. For those reasons, from 10 April, we will once again start our weekday walks at 7.00 am from in front of the Pomona Community House. The only way to really get to know your town (village?) is by pounding the footpaths. It is amazing how much you learn about the plants residents have in their front gardens.

A Touch of the Past Antiques

Coffee Shop Open 7 Days ….7am - 5pm

Unfortunately the wet weather has reduced the number of walks we had in March. We are looking to improve on this in the coming months. Our monthly Moon Walk at Noosaville begins with a light meal (optional) followed by a walk along the Noosa River in the moonlight. Partners, family and friends are most welcome.

Antiques, Gifts, Flowers, Jewellery, Teddy Heaven ****** Coffee, Cake Pies & Sandwiches

The dates for the next Moon Walks are Reserve Street, Pomona

Tuesday May 8 and Tuesday June 5.

Noosa Country Show Committee…… are proud to announce the Noosa Country Show 2012 is up and running and would like to advise that all entries for events are now open. We are particularly keen to have our horticultural students entering their produce as well as the budding photographers and artists showing off their skills. Craft and cooking events are again becoming popular and whilst we are still in the process of designing our new web site. We advise that all entry forms are available on our current 2011 website for you to download and send in. This year we are having a Masked Dinner Dance for our entrants in the Noosa Show Girl competition and hope you find it a fun and exciting family event. These entry forms can be sent out to individuals by phoning me or downloaded from website www.noosashowsociety.org.au We hope this years show increases the bond and friendly competition within the community giving us back something to smile about after what has been a devastating few events for us all. Hoping you are able to partake in this years show and support us once again by promoting these events in the local community.
