Sandy Bolton: Queen of power?

All eyes are on finalisaton of the counting of primary votes and allocation of preferences in the ballots for the two electorates covering the Noosa Hinterland as lastminute volatility in polling pointed to a close tussle between major parties to form government in Queensland for the next four years. The importance of the seat of Nicklin – incorporating Cooroy, Black Mountain and surrounding areas – is not lost on election aficionados, as it was sitting member Marty Hunt (LNP) who succeeded independent Peter Wellington at the 2017 election, Mr Wellington previously having supported a minority Beattie Labor government from the Speaker’s chair. The focus has switched to popular Independent Noosa MP, Sandy Bolton, who is relying on the votes of the people of

Pomona, Kin Kin, Boreen Point and coastal areas of the shire to again be their representative in the 57th Queensland Parliament, where she may have a more prominent ‘balance of power’ role in setting the government’s legislative agenda until 2024. Whether she plays a balance of power role as important as Mr Wellington did in forming government remains to be seen. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (ALP) and contender for the top job Deb Frecklington (LNP) have both ruled out governing in minority with the support of the crossbench or an independent. CYCLING STRATEGY RELEASED SOON Noosa Council will release its updated draft new cycling and walking strategy midNovember, Mayor Clare Stewart has announced. Public comment will be sought before final amendments are made and the strategy implemented.

The Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy will re-establish a vision for cycling and walking in Noosa Shire for the Continued page 2 next 20 years.
