I M P A C T

In partnership with Peg’s Foundation, the Northeast Ohio Medical University Department of Psychiatry Coordinating Centers of Excellence — the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment (BeST) Center, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Center of Excellence (CJ CCoE) and the Ohio Program for Campus Safety & Mental Health (OPCSMH) — provide community stakeholders with expertise and resources that increase access to bestpractice treatments and programs that ultimately improve the quality of care and quality of life for people affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses.

A Message from Executive Director, Coordinating Centers of Excellence Ruth H. Simera, M.Ed., LSW It is my pleasure to share the NEOMED Department of Psychiatry’s Coordinating Centers of Excellence IMPACT Report for 2019-2020.

While each of the Coordinating Centers of Excellence has its own mission, programs and goals, we are increasingly focused on ways in which the centers can work collaboratively to improve the overall, collective impact of the centers to bring recovery and hope to the lives of people affected by mental illness with whom the Centers’ constituents interact every day.

We invite you take a few minutes to watch our Stories of Recovery and Hope video to see first-hand how the programs and practices of the coordinating centers of excellence are making significant and positive differences in the lives of individuals, their friends and families and their communities. IMPACT: As of July 1, 2020, 56% of Ohioans have access to at least one best practice in schizophrenia treatment.

13 FIRST Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis teams serving 23 Ohio counties provide integrated early identification and treatment to promote a faster, more complete recoveries to individuals experiencing initial episodes of a psychotic illness;

BeST Center experts provide training and consultation in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis interventions and Family Education and Support to all Ohio CSC for FEP teams and a Clinical High Risk for Psychosis treatment team;

4 Northeast Ohio partner agencies offer recoveryoriented strategies informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis to help individuals cope more effectively with symptoms of psychosis;

3 partner agencies statewide offer Cognitive Enhancement Therapy, the gold standard intervention for addressing the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia that can affect social and vocational functioning.

IMPACT: Attitudes — particularly attitudes about psychosis — matter.

“Do Attitudes Matter? Evaluating the influence of training in CBT-p-Informed Strategies on attitudes about working with people who experience psychosis” by the BeST Center’s Harry Sivec, Ph.D., Valerie Kreider, Ph.D., Debra Hrouda, Ph.D., as well as Christopher Buzzelli, Ph.D., and Megan Hricovec was published in Community Mental Health Journal in April 2020.

Studies show that negative attitudes about psychosis are not uncommon among mental health providers and that these attitudes can affect how they deliver treatment to clients. The BeST Center explored how its partner mental health agency providers felt about working with people with psychosis before and after attending its intensive training in recovery-oriented strategies informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBT-p). Upon completion of training, providers endorsed more optimistic attitudes about recovery, improved confidence in working with psychosis and greater empathy for the experience of psychosis.

IMPACT: Developing cognitive skills to improve daily work and social interactions In July 2019 the BeST Center convened international experts for a Cognitive Remediation Think Tank to discuss proven and promising approaches to addressing cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. Treatments for schizophrenia address clinical symptoms, such as hallucinations, delusions and mood, but often do less to address the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, including memory, attention, social cognition and executive functioning, that can affect daily work or social interactions. The BeST Center will be pilot-testing the implementation of Action-Based Cognitive Remediation (ABCR), developed by Christopher Bowie, M.D., of Queen’s University, in community treatment settings. ABCR participants have shown improvements in cognitive abilities, community functioning, daily functioning, and higher rates of employment and reduced job stress.

IMPACT: Celebrating 20 Years of CIT in Ohio and All 88 Ohio Counties with Trained CIT Officers In May 2020, Ohio celebrated 20 years of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) programs. CIT programs are collaborative efforts between law enforcement and mental health systems to help officers to safely de-escalate mental health crises and direct people to treatment instead of unnecessary incarceration. In 2020, just two Ohio counties had CIT programs. Today, all 88 Ohio counties have trained CIT officers. More than 16,000 professionals have been trained throughout Ohio, of which nearly 12,000 are sworn law enforcement officers.

IMPACT: As of July 1, 2020, the CJ CCoE has facilitated SIM exercises in 40 percent of Ohio counties, with 35 percent of these counties completing SIM mapping for adult mental health and justice systems.

Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) mapping, based on the Sequential Intercept Model (Munetz & Griffin, 2006), provides a collaborative community framework for problem solving and highlights “points of interception” where interventions can occur for justice-involved individuals with mental illness. The goal is to help communities develop effective systems of care that minimize criminal justice involvement for people with mental illness.

IMPACT: In 2019, the Ohio Program for Campus Safety & Mental Health (OPCSMH) awarded a total of $77,309 in Collaborative Program Development Grants (CPDGs) to 16 campus/community collaborators to support suicide prevention, mental health awareness campaigns and screening and other programming.

Since 2009, the OPCSMH has supported 90 campus/community collaborations with approximately $450,000 in CPDGs.

IMPACT: More than 900 faculty, staff and students participated in the 2019-2020 Ohio Program for Campus Safety & Mental Health webinar series, with more than 200 individuals receiving continuing education credits. Leading experts provided training, support, information and resources on timely topics, including: Increasing Student Engagement: Outreach to Marginalized Populations on Campuses Crisis Intervention in Higher Education A Class of Our Own: Supporting the Mental Health Needs of Students of Color PASS: A Peer Coaching Program for College Students with Mental Health Conditions International Student Mental Health Before and During COVID-19
