The Co-operative Group - Respect Network

Founded in the Summer of 2010 ‘Respect’ is the inclusive LGBT network within The Co-operative Group. It is coordinated by employees from every Co-operative business area, pay grade and sexuality from all over the UK. With 4% of our 100,000 employees, across our 4,500 UK branches, identifying as lesbian, gay or bisexual (91% declaration rate on annual employee survey) it is important everyone feels welcome and can give their all to their role. In a short space of time ‘Respect’ has grown to be the largest and most active LGBT network in the UK, with over 8,500 ‘Friends of Respect’.

The Co-operative Group - Respect Network

The Co-operative is ranked the UK’s third most gay friendly employer in Stonewall’s 2013 Workplace Equality Index. The only retailer to feature in the Top 100 since 2010 and the first to make it into the Top 10. Influenced by ‘Respect’, The Co-operative was one of the few businesses in the UK to take part in the consultation for Equal Marriage in England and Wales and the only business to give evidence to the Public Bill Committee in February 2013. Supporting charities is an integral part of the ‘Respect’ network. Volunteering over 5,000 hours of their own time in 2013 alone, our members and the network have supported charities including: Lesbian & Gay Foundation Stonewall The Albert Kennedy Trust : Painting a room and donating all the white goods for their ‘Purple Door’ safe house in Manchester George House Trust Manchester Sharks NAT (National AIDS Trust) + many more
