It’s hard to believe that 75 years ago my father Jack, and uncle Les Holden, purchased their first Line 1 females. At the time, I’d imagine many cattlemen found their breeding decisions & practices to be radical. But they bucked the trends and stayed the course. Always focused on providing growthy cattle with bred-in performance meant for the range, I’d imagine both men would be proud to see the impact their Line 1 cattle continue to have on the Hereford breed and beef Industry today.

We believe

one of the biggest benefits our progarm has to offer you is the predicatability that comes from maintaining a closed line of breeding for over 70 years. While our high degree of inbreeding has likely cost us a bit of the boost we’d gain by implementing genetics outside the Line 1 pool, the bump in weights, vigor and fertility is instead realized tenfold when you implement our genetics within your program.

We believe

there’s value in both hard data as well as in new technologies. Our ranch has stayed ahead of the curve in regards to implementing tools and tests set forth and recommended by the Hereford Association and the Industry at large, but have never ceased in reporting and evaluating hard data gathered in the field.

We believe

our buyers are astute cattlemen who value structure and phenotype just as much as a solid EPD panel. We avoid single-trait selection & lean more heavily on phenotype, structure and actual performance. That being said, you’ll find a large number of cattle selling have solid EPD profiles. The bullet points below each animal highlight the traits for which it ranks in the top 40% of the breed or better.

This 7131E son really puts it all together and has all the traits we’ve come to expect from 7131E progeny: tremendous length, depth of rib, a big hip, red neck, and 100% pigment. No real weakness in his EPD panel, top 25% of the breed in 13 traits, and backed by outstanding cow families. He’s super stylish.
