E-bike laws enter next phase with licensing required Almost 400 devices seized since roll out

QUEENSLAND’S e-mobility crackdown is entering its next phase, with riders now required to hold at least a learner licence as police continue targeting unsafe behaviour on e-bikes and e-scooters.

The new licensing requirement came into effect on August 31, two months after Queensland Police Service (QPS) launched Operation Yankee Surety, a statewide road safety operation targeting riders who break the rules.

Since the operation began on July 1, police have issued more than 1700 infringement notices to e-mobility riders across Queensland and almost 400 non-compliant devices have been seized, while more than 1000 riders have CONTINUED PAGE 2

Spirited performances launch 2026 ‘Shed Music Festival’ The 2026 Shed Music Festival was officially launched on Tuesday August 25 at the Coolum Beach Hotel. Put on by the Coolum Men’s Shed, the ‘Shed Music Festival’ which is now in its third year will run from October 16-18 and the launch at CBH saw sponsors, musicians and dignitaries who have been key to the success of the festival come together and celebrate what was to come. A lively set of musical performances took centre stage with Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli joining members of the Coolum Men’s Shed band in a spirited rendition of songs including John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ (head to our Facebook page to see the video). The Festival is all about promoting health initiatives and community by way of music and will see more than 150 musicians from sheds across Australia take to the stage. QUEENSLAND Police Service (QPS) has welcomed two new four-legged recruits into the constabulary with the Sunshine Coast Dog Squad officially swearing in Police Dogs ‘Odin’ and ‘Jackal’.

More than 100 police dogs work across 15 locations statewide, including general purpose, specialist detection and tactical working dogs.

PD Odin is a 3-year-old German Shepherd that has been teamed up with Senior Constable Daniel Hayward.

PD Jackal is 15 months old and has been teamed up with the Acting Officer in Charge of the Sunshine Coast Dog Squad, Acting Sergeant Trent Reynolds, taking over from PD Enzo who was medically retired.

There is also a family connection within the squad.

PD Jackal is the son of current serving Sunshine Coast PD Astro and will join his fa-

ther on the squad alongside PDs Buzz and Denver, who became operational in early 2025.

In the first 12 months of PDs Astro, Buzz and Denver becoming operational, the Sunshine Coast Dog Squad has responded to 1667 calls for service, resulting in 138 arrests and 124 tracking deployments.

Acting Sergeant Reynolds said PD Jackal’s first operational shift was on July 29, and it’s not the first time a father and son have served on the Sunshine Coast Dog Squad.

“My previous work dog PD Darth was actually the son of the work dog he was replacing, PD Oakley. It’s a unique dynamic,” Acting Sergeant Reynolds said.

“Much like a Police Recruit, our Police Dogs will learn most through exposure to real life policing,” Acting Sergeant Reynolds said.

Pawsome Dog Squad calendar launched

The work of Queensland’s police dogs is also being celebrated with the launch of the 2027 QPS Dog Squad Calendar.

The annual calendar features police dogs and their handlers from across Queensland, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the animals that play an important role in frontline policing.

Senior Sergeant Stu Ellison said the calendar was about more than cute photographs.

“Our police dogs are an integral part of frontline policing and are capable of tasks that surpass human ability, such as tracking offenders, locating evidence, and detecting blood or explosives,” Senior Sergeant Ellison said.

The calendar also has a strong Sunshine Coast connection, with proceeds going to three community organisations — including Sunshine Coast not-for-profit SalTy Souls Legacy which seeks to re-engage youth with their natural environment and community by learning to surf.

Queensland Police Legacy, which supports families of deceased or terminally ill officers, and Juiced TV, a hospital television program made by children for children undergoing treatment for serious illness will benefit from the calendar sales.

Police have also issued 142 speeding fines and intercepted 54 riders who were found to be affected by alcohol.

The figures come as the next stage of the operation gets underway, with police now checking whether riders hold the required licence when they are intercepted.

Under the new rules, riders must hold a minimum of a valid learner licence to operate an electric power assisted cycle (EPAC) or personal mobility device such as an e-scooter.

There are some exemptions, including for 12 to 17-year-olds riding under the supervision of a caregiver, people riding in recreational areas such as bike trails and medically exempt riders.

The licensing requirement adds to existing age restrictions applying to younger e-mobility riders.

Disaster and Emergency Management Acting Deputy Commissioner Rhys Wildman said police would check compliance with the new requirements as part of their ongoing enforcement work.

“Queensland police are reminding all e-mobility riders and their caregivers to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and understand their responsibilities as road users.”

Acting Deputy Commissioner Wildman said the first two months of Operation Yankee Surety had highlighted the need for both education and enforcement.

Young First Nations talent takes centre stage in Coolum

WITH the sun shining, Coolum’s Jack Morgan Park provided the backdrop for a celebration of young First Nations talent on Sunday August 23 with the GATHAA Next Gen Market & Youth Showcase taking centre stage.

The event brought together 10 young First Nations stallholders aged between eight and 23, along with musicians, artists, mentors and families for a day focused on giving young entrepreneurs a place to showcase their wares.

For some of the young entrepreneurs, it was their first time running a market stall, selling products they had cre-

ated themselves and learning what it takes to run a small business.

Event manager Carissa Coorey said the aim was to put young First Nations people front and centre and give them an opportunity to build confidence and skills.

“The event was actually our second GATHAA Next Gen Market & Youth Showcase, and the whole purpose was to put our young First Nations people front and centre,” Carissa said.

The event also had a strong focus on music, with young performers taking to the stage throughout the day.

cians who had not necessarily met before came together that morning to rehearse and work on a collaborative performance.

They were supported by established artists and mentors, including acclaimed First Nations musician Fred Leone, who recently took out Artist of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards with his cousin Birdz.

The mentoring program is designed to run alongside the markets, giving young people access to artists, entrepreneurs and other experienced people who can share their knowledge and help them develop their skills.

Coolum proved a great choice for the showcase, with

the combination of the Civic Centre and Jack Morgan Park providing both indoor and outdoor event options.

“Everyone was so welcoming and it was beautiful to see new faces – it was nice to be embraced by the community,” Carissa said.

The GATHAA Next Gen Market & Youth Showcase is now looking at providing regular opportunities for young people to perform, sell their creations, facilitate activities and continue learning with a Next Gen store at the monthly GATHAA markets.

OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY – 31.08.26 Dear editor, In 2001, the year International Overdose Awareness Day was founded, the world was a simpler place.

It didn’t mean people weren’t losing their lives to overdose. Just the opposite. In 1999 alone, over a thousand people died in Australia from opiate use. That’s three people a day.

This type of occurrence is no longer so hard to uncover.

We have more information and, through our needle and syringe programs, better systems to warn the unsuspecting substance user about toxicity and contamination.

But things aren’t going well.

For all our advances, all our improved intelligence and, indeed, responses to overdose, people keep dying.

The current data (2024 statistics) makes it starkly clear.

In Australia a person dies from overdose seven times a day. That’s a person every 3.5 hours. More than double the rate at the height of the heroin glut in 1999 and 2000.

For the 25th time on August 31, people around the world will be raising their voices as one to lower the overdose death toll. Governments should listen because hard decisions regarding the redistribution of funds need to be made. Heavily weighted law and order responses are not working.

It has been a long road which led me to starting Overdose Awareness Day in 2001 and has kept me campaigning for this issue for the past 25 years.

In the 1980s as a young social worker, a mother sought counselling with me because the rural town she lived in had turned against her after her child died of overdose.

The impact of the shame she felt complicated her grief.

The effect of judgement from others had on her, has always stayed with me.

At The Salvos, where I have worked since 1998 and still do today, I have met people who live with that threat constantly. These folk have often lost partners and friends, and, back in 2001, I saw they’d never been given the opportunity to mourn their loved-ones free from shame.

Of course, lowering the

rate of fatalities is also about raising awareness. Now, one of the largest groups of people suffering overdose death are older people, who die from taking prescription opioids, and or benzodiazepines.

Why then, when we have more knowledge about why, when we are finally able to access the overdose reversal drug, Naloxone, aren’t we seeing the rates of death come down? The answer lies in the uneven way funding is distributed.

The government has wisely decided to get behind the provision of Naloxone, and everyone in the using community – not to mention their families and friends – thanks them for it.

But without other measures – the introduction of a safe supply, an increase in drug testing sites, an increase in injecting rooms – we will continue to fall short.

After 25 years of campaigning, it seems we’re looking at 25 years more.

Until all those options we know would lower the risk of overdose have been implemented, we will fight on.

With the number of fatalities nudging double the road toll, the stakes are too high not to.

Testimony to its need, the day has grown from a small gathering at a Salvos Crisis Centre, to an international event. Ironically my wish is for the day not to be necessary at all.

SMILE AT LIFE Dear editor, The late Dolly Parton said, “If you see someone without a smile, give ’em yours.” On the Sunshine Coast, that’s practically a civic duty.

The other morning, I was strolling along the boardwalk at Coolum on one of those days when the Coast seems to be smiling at you.

Except for one bloke.

He was sitting on the bench near the surf club, shoulders slumped, staring at the sand as if it had personally offended him. Maybe he’d spilled his coffee. Maybe he’d lost an argument with his teenager.

Maybe he’d tried to book a tradie.

Whatever it was, he wasn’t

smiling. So I gave him mine.

Not a big theatrical grin — just a simple, friendly Sunshine Coast smile. The kind that says, “Mate, whatever’s going on, the ocean’s still here and the day’s not done.”

He glanced up, surprised.

Then he smiled back. A small one, but genuine. The breeze felt lighter. The morning felt brighter. Even the seagulls seemed to approve.

We ended up chatting — nothing deep, nothing dramatic. Just two strangers talking about the surf, the weather, and how the Coast has a way of smoothing out the rough edges of a day. He told me he’d recently moved up from Brisbane and was still adjusting to the slower pace.

“People actually talk to you here,” he said. “Well,” I replied, “we’re contractually obliged. It’s in the rate notices.”

He laughed — a proper laugh this time — and off he went, shoulders a little higher, steps a little lighter.

And I kept walking, thinking about how tiny moments can tilt a whole day. How a simple smile can be a little gift — free, renewable, and surprisingly powerful.

On the Sunshine Coast, we don’t always realise it, but we’re surrounded by these small exchanges. The nod from the early morning swimmer. The wave from the barista who remembers your order.

Dolly was right. If you see someone without a smile, give ’em yours. It might just be the best thing you hand over all day!

GAMBLING REFORMS Dear editor, I am writing to share my thoughts on the government’s new gambling legislation The legislation is a step forward in several respects.

It proposes restrictions on wagering advertising, in-

cluding limits around live sport, gambling branding in sporting venues and on player uniforms, and the use of celebrities, athletes and influencers to promote betting.

It also aims to strengthen BetStop, improve action against illegal gambling services and address harmful emerging online gambling products.

The proposal to allow people to opt out of online wagering advertising is also useful.

However, an opt-out system still leaves gambling advertising as the default. People should not have to take individual action to escape a constant stream of gambling promotions, particularly when the government is rightly concerned about online harms affecting children and young people.

In my view, the legislation does not go far enough

in reducing the quantity and normalisation of gambling advertising. It does not deliver a comprehensive ban, and important advertising loopholes remain. The measures therefore represent harm reduction rather than the stronger public-health approach that many Australians have been calling for.

I am also concerned that the legislation does not sufficiently address the fairness of gambling promotions. Offers such as “100% bonus” promotions should be subject to a clear requirement that major exclusions, turnover requirements and other limitations appear as prominently as the headline offer.

Another important omission is a proper right for punters to cancel or withdraw when the circumstances of a bet materially change.

I am also concerned about the relationship between gambling companies, political

parties and ministers.

As I understand it, the new gambling legislation does not itself impose a general ban or cap on political donations from gambling companies to political parties or ministers.

Nor does it appear to prohibit gambling-industry-funded dinners, hospitality or political access.

Overall, I acknowledge that the legislation achieves some worthwhile things, however, it does not achieve the full reform needed. It does not sufficiently reduce the overall volume of advertising, does not fully regulate misleading promotional offers, does not establish a general right to cancel after material changes to a bet, and does not address gambling-industry political donations or access to ministers.

Spring Exhibition COOLUM Art Collective is excited to announce a change to the dates of their annual Spring Exhibition with the event moved forward and coinciding with the middle of the school holidays. Traditionally held over the October long weekend, this year’s exhibition will now take place from September 25-27.

The three-day event has been rescheduled in response to feedback from the many art lovers who regularly spend the long weekend camping and enjoying time with family.

Another exciting change is the Official Opening, which will move from its usual Saturday afternoon timeslot to Friday evening, giving visitors the opportunity to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and enjoy the weekend at their leisure.

The upcoming exhibition, Horizons, promises to be a celebration of creativity and artistic talent and inspirational visual artist Tricia Reust will serve as guest judge for the event.

Tricia is widely respected for her work across a variety of media and is also known as a workshop presenter, video educator, author and a life member of the Pastel Society of Australia.

This year’s exhibition will also welcome two new exhibiting artists, Charlie McGann and Jacqui O’Grady, who will be showcasing their work alongside the group’s established members.

The official opening and awards presentation will take place on Friday September 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Madagascar the musical IT’S JUST two weeks until the students at Coolum State Primary School hear the words “it’s showtime” and present their production of DreamWorks, Madagascar Jr: A Musical Adventure.

Madagascar Jr is a clev-

erly edited 60-minute version of the much-loved animated 2005 blockbuster film.

The musical follows a group of pampered Central Park Zoo animals who unexpectedly find themselves on an unexpected journey to the exotic island of Madagascar.

There’s outlandish characters, adventure galore and an upbeat score.

Show Director, Jo Nix related that she was incredibly

proud of all involved and how far the students had come.

“In February we saw almost 90 excited students audition for a part in Madagascar Jr. and now, after several months of hard work, another awesome Coolum production hits the stage with a cast of 55 members and a dedicated team of teachers.

“It has been an honour and privilege to direct such an amazing group of young and talented people who have been so willing to learn and so fun to work with.”

Jo said that the cast and

crew have pulled together as a tight group of friends and have collectively encouraged all involved over the past months during rehearsals.

This will be Coolum Primary’s eight musical production over 16 years and the musical performances have been an integral part of building a strong and inspiring culture for the performing arts at the school.

Principal Shannyn Taylor said she too was excited about the opportunities that the musical productions provide and firmly believes that students grow and develop in so many areas by way of participating.

“Our students learn about commitment, dedication, time management and of coursestretch their skills in the performing arts!

“A huge shout out must go to Jo Nix and the amazingly dedicated staff at our school who volunteer hours of their own time - it’s a real community and they produce an outstanding performance!”

Music Director Roz Mackay also commented on the gains which come by way of the performing arts.

“It is so rewarding to see the students really come alive and be proud of the musical magic that they have created.

“Our incredible cast really bring this fun and fantastic soundtrack to life!”

As Divisional President, Luke will work closely with members, industry stakeholders and the Funerals Australia National Council to strengthen professional standards, support education and development and advocate on issues affecting funeral professionals and the families they serve.

“I am pleased and honoured to serve as President of the Queensland division of Funerals Australia, to give something back to an industry that is an important part of my life and an opportunity to help and support our members maintain the highest of standards for the local communities they serve,” Luke said.

Luke said improving and developing regulation, supporting regional funeral businesses and increasing professional development opportunities would be key areas of focus during his term.

Funerals Australia National President Asha Dooley said Luke’s strong connection to both the industry and his local community would be an asset.

“Our Divisional Presidents are closely connected to the funeral businesses and communities they represent.

“They provide an important link between our members, stakeholders and the national Association, while helping to identify the issues and opportunities affecting funeral service in their region,” Asha said.

The appointment comes at an important time for the funeral profession, with changing community expectations and continued discussion around professional standards, regulation, workforce development and education.

Mr Gregson said he was looking forward to working with the Queensland Divisional Council and members throughout his term.

ON WEDNESDAY August 26 dogs the world over who have a home were spoilt and would-be dog owners were asked to consider adoption or fostering a rescue before looking at a dog from a breeder.

TREE DISPUTES THE Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution (Fences and Trees) Act 2011 (Qld) does exactly what it says on the tin. It allows neighbours to litigate in QCAT (Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal) about their disputes, at least as far as they relate to fences and trees.

It seems to me that there are only two types of people in the world; ‘tree-lovers’ who are prepared to put up with a bit of shade and mess in their yard in exchange for the oxygen and birdlife that come with it, and ‘tree-haters’ who don’t want a stick of foliage in their yard and wish the same for their neighbours.

Situate a tree-lover next to a tree-hater in a suburban street and eventually sparks will fly.

WELL, Coolum High had a great ‘Book Week’ and in many ways it was unexpected. The way the students, with senior students leading the way, took to dressing in their favourite book character last Friday was as unexpected as it was inspiring.

Book week aims to celebrate the joy of reading and to bring to life the characters, stories and adventures that have connected with each of us in our lives. It’s a celebration of our humanity, that it is through stories and music that we come alive and celebrate our communities, our history, our special events and the way relationships make our lives richer and more interesting.

As an educator, I also know that students who read widely are better equipped for all their studies and have a broader perspective on world events, history, politics, science and the role of

injury or property damage, or are causing a ‘substantial, ongoing and unreasonable interference’ with the use and enjoyment of the applicant’s land. An entire industry has evolved in the writing of arborist reports to prove the former, while QCAT endures mundane battles between neighbours to resolve interesting questions like exactly how much excessive debris or cracking footpaths you need to prove ‘substantial and unreasonable interference’.

Actually taking that step of filing in QCAT could be the thing that gets the treeloving neighbour to prioritise your complaints. But it is off-putting that the cost of an application is set at $405.60 and the average time for tree matters to be resolved in QCAT is presently 98 weeks.

Having got the other party’s attention, it usually pays to seriously consider a mediated outcome rather than waiting for your day in court.

As someone once said, “the limits of my language are the limits of my world.” Everything comes to us through language, and so much of this comes through reading.

Everyone has a favourite book. Sometimes a book captures a moment or describes something so exotic in such a way that it makes it stunningly real. Good books make us laugh and cry and connect to people, many of whom only exist on that published page. The great authors, like Charles Dickens or Jane Austen, create works of art that last centuries and whose words inspire movies and stage shows to this day.

There is no doubt that AI is subtly changing our world, but in this world of rapid technological change, where authorship can be questioned, it is so good to know that our young people have embraced the characters of stories told for years, and for centuries, as the heart of who we really are as human beings. Times may change, but sometimes it’s better for everyone if some things stay the same. I can safely say that book week was something special at Coolum State High School.

ROGUES AND ENVIRO POLICY ROGUES can be quite attractive and likeable like the old-fashioned outlaws in the western movies. However, the United States has used the term rogue state when referring to what it sees as outlaw states like North Korea. In Australia, maybe Queensland could be considered a rogue state?

While the Federal Government has been trying to get agreement on Australia wide policies on data centres, it’s become apparent that both Queensland and the Northern Territory don’t want to play the game.

Data centres use vast amounts of water and it makes sense to have a national policy for the development of data centres mandating they use renewable energy and sustainably use water.

We have one of the driest continents where water is a precious commodity and data centres use a lot of water and electricity? So, who pays the price of this development?

The onset of climate change and the lack of action in the transition to renewables by the Queensland Government means Queensland doesn’t want to play. The artificial intelligence (AI) race and the establishment of data centres are big potential money earners, but Queensland is heavily

invested in fossil fuels.

While the take-up of solar energy by households in Queensland has been leading in the domestic sector, industry and governments are a long way behind. In 2025 55% of suitable dwellings had solar power - being the highest take-up in Australia. Yes, you and I are doing the heavy lifting installing solar in our homes.

The Queensland Government has cancelled pump hydro projects west of Mackay and a visit to Borumba Dam in the Sunshine Coast hinterland has shown slow progress on this project. The Federal Government gave environmental approvals in 2024 and the Queensland Government is talking about reviewing the business case for a smaller project. These projects can successfully assist with energy storage together with large batteries.

Queensland is already indicating it will not support a federal policy for data centres and the federal government is indicating it may use constitutional powers. This could be the Tasmanian Dams Case (1983) all over again with a federal government intervention.

Many of us like a rogue but will the public good be achieved and federal policies win out? I hope we can keep smiling.

Spirited performances launch 2026 ‘Shed Music Festival’ FROM PAGE 1

MUSIC, mateship and good health will take centre stage in Coolum when more than 150 Men’s Shed musicians come together once again for the third annual ‘Shed Music Festival’.

Presented by the Coolum Men’s Shed, the three-day festival is built around a simple idea – getting people together, making music and encouraging men to look after

their health.

“Coolum Men’s Shed hosted our wonderful friends, supporters and sponsors to an evening at the Coolum Beach Hotel tonight,” a Coolum Men’s Shed spokesperson said.

“An enormous thanks to Sunshine Coast Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez and of course Mayor Rosanna Natoli for their support with grants over the years, with a personal thanks to the Mayor

for opening Shed Music 26.”

The launch of Tuesday August 25 was also an opportunity for the Coolum Men’s Shed to publicly thank the many local businesses, individuals and supporters who were key sponsors and essential to the success of the event in just a few years.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien was at the launch and said the festival was a great example of positive community work in action.

“It was great to join the official launch of the 2026 Shed Music Festival last night in Coolum,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Thank you to the Coolum Men’s Shed and its dedicated volunteers, sponsors and supporters for making this event possible. I’m proud to have supported the Shed’s growth over the years and to see it continue making such a positive difference in our community.”

The Coolum Lions Club

also showed its support at the launch, presenting the Men’s Shed with a $2,000 donation.

The festival will be held across two local venues, with performances and activities at the Coolum Men’s Shed in Research St and Coolum Civic Centre.

Alongside the music at the festival will be health awareness activities and on-site health checks, giving participants the chance to catch up with old friends, make new

ones and perhaps learn something about their own health along the way.

BOOK WEEK 2026 AT COOLUM STATE HIGH SCHOOL

ALL for the love of reading - schools across the country last week came to life with characters from the pages of books which were used as inspiration for Book Week 2026 celebrations.

Students, teachers, and staff at Coolum State High School dressed up with enthusiasm and celebrated the theme for 2026 - Symphony of Stories.

Book Week started in 1945

when the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) was founded as a way to promote and foster Australian authors, illustrators and young readers.

The following year the CBCA Book of the Year Awards were held as a way to promote books of high literary and artistic merit and Book Week was officially celebrated.

Now, some 80 years later children across Australia dress up and celebrate

their literary heroes and the CBCA announces their award winners.

Coolum State High School Principal Troy Ascott said that in this new AI era, books were more important than ever.

“The message of book week is about the joy that reading brings into our lives and honouring the great authors, including Australian authors, who have created those stories.

“It’s about creating excitement around reading and showing that great stories live with us and shape our culture and who we are and book week shows that we value reading more than ever and that a good book can have such a profound influence over the way we think and act.”

Students and staff at Coolum High had their biggest book week yet.

“The students embraced this

like never before, led by the senior students,” Mr Ascott said.

“At second break there was a fashion parade, with awards given to the best designs.

“It was a wonderful community event that showed that, as much as things change, Coolum remains very much a community who are proud to showcase the things they truly value.”

There was colour and lots of fun as a result of book week

celebrations.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in book week and thanks also to the Advertiser for supporting us as we promote the love of reading to our students.”

COOLUM COLTS A GRADE GRAND FINAL BOUND

THE COOLUM Colts A Grade team are the first team into the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League Grand Finals following an emphatic 62 to nil victory over Caloundra at Coolum on Saturday August 29 in front of a large home crowd.

Coolum settled into their patterns quickly both in defence and attack and after some judiciously placed fifth tackle kicks, shot out to a 28 points to nil lead after 30 minutes.

This was to be the half time score.

During the second half the Colts attack and defence was faultless as their confidence, energy levels, and enthusiasm rose to new heights.

This along with excellent ball control enabled them to add 32 extra points in the second half while holding Caloundra to nil.

A Grade coach Daniel Brown said that making the Grand Final was a great reward for the players.

“To get into the Grand Final is a reward for how the boys have trained over the past few weeks and they have really come together and to-

night we had a few things come our way.

“We got an early lead, and it is a good Caloundra side, and they were off their game tonight, and we were on and that was the result and that’s the way it goes.”

In the lead up to the Grand Final Brown said that the foundations have been laid.

“We have trained pretty hard, and they have pushed themselves and they have kept each other accountable, and we seem to have come through unscathed.”

This is the Colts fourth

season in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League A Grade.

In 2024 they were Grand Finalists; in 2025 they made the Preliminary Final and in 2026 they are in their second Grand Final and are looking like they will bring the trophy back to Coolum.

In earlier games on the day the Coolum Open Women’s team went down to Maroochydore by 22 to 16 thus bringing their season to an end.

The Reserve Grade team were defeated by Caboolture 28 points to 18. Fortunately, the Reserve Grade get a sec-

ond chance, and they will play Caloundra at Caloundra this coming weekend.

The Grand Finals will be at the Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sunday September 13 with the A Grade side Coolum will play yet to be decided.

All of the local league loving community are encouraged to show their support for the Colts and get down to the stadium and “fill the hill” as the Colts hopefully win the big dance and solidify their dominance in the A Grade 2026 competition as the dominant side with the Grand Final Premiership win.

The Colts will be celebrating on Sunday September 13 at Sunshine Coast Stadium with the A Grade Men taking on a yet to be decided side in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League Grand Final. WITH HIS big smile, fluffy black and white coat and plenty of personality, 1 year old Oreo the Cavoodle, is hard to resist.

But the team at 4 Paws Animal Rescue says that finding Oreo a home isn’t simply about finding someone who falls for his gorgeous looks. It’s about finding the right match.

Oreo is a young, energetic dog who loves his walks and enjoys being out and about. He’ll thrive in a home with an active owner or couple who have the time to include him in their everyday life and ensure he has the exercise, playtime, stimulation and the companionship a young dog needs.

He’s also a sensitive boy who can experience some anxiety, so a calm, predictable home where he can be the focus would suit him best. Oreo is looking for an adult home without cats, where he can settle in at

his own pace with plenty of patience, routine and reassurance.

Like many young dogs, Oreo still has things to learn, but he’s keen to please and has so much to give in return. He’s as sweet as his namesake and is affectionate, clever, fun, and will make a wonderful companion for someone prepared to give him the time and support he’s looking for.

Tewantin’s Doonella bridge makes major progress with concrete pour RESIDENTS in the Tewantin region can look to seeing light at the end of the tunnel with the traffic woes as a result of works to Doonella bridge passing a significant milestone with major concrete works completed.

The concrete relieving slab on the southern side of the bridge is in place and Noosa Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, Shaun Walsh, said the achievement is significant considering the persistent wet weather.

“We’ve encountered some challenging wet weather con-

ditions, but good planning and coordination between council and contractors have seen solid progress made,” Mr Walsh said.

Traffic on the bridge is restricted to just one lane with traffic lights on each end dictating the flow of traffic.

The original plan was to only allow traffic travelling eastbound to use the bridge and westbound traffic required to use a lengthy detour.

The initial first few days of that system caused major traffic congestion, frustration from Tewantin businesses and was quickly replaced with a single-

lane, two-way flow controlled by temporary traffic lights.

Mr Walsh said the singlelane traffic arrangements appear to be operating well.

“Our traffic staff are continually monitoring traffic, and driver behaviour has certainly helped to keep traffic moving and we appreciate the patience, understanding and kindness while waiting at the traffic lights.”
