Refurbished Peregian Beach Surf Club officially opened

The newly renovated Peregian Beach Surf Club downstairs members’ area was officially opened on Sunday July 19. The new member facilities came about after years of hard work from volunteers and supporters who were determined to see the club have a strong lifesaving presence in the community again. The project has delivered a dedicated first aid room, training room, new office, and dedicated nipper changing areas. The $928,000 project was jointly funded by the State Government and SLSQ. FOR MANY Sunshine Coast families, the fear of losing their home is no longer something that happens to other people and this Homelessness Week which runs from August 3-9, people are being urged to consider others and look at the crisis which is happening across the country.

New research has found almost one in four Australians are not confident they could avoid homelessness if they faced an unexpected setback such as losing a job, serious illness, family violence, a relationship breakdown or a sharp rise in housing costs.

The research, commissioned by Wesley Mission and conducted by McCrindle, also suggests attitudes towards homelessness are changing.

YEARS of hard work by volunteers, members and supporters have paid off for Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club, with the official opening of a transformed members’ area that will support the club’s growing lifesaving and nipper programs.

The renovated downstairs facilities were unveiled during the club’s 2026 Open Day, giving locals a chance to see the improvements while finding out more about becoming a surf lifesaver or joining the nipper program.

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said the project reflected years of dedication from the club and its volunteers.

“Congratulations to Leigh, committee members, surf lifesavers and supporters of the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club for your tireless work on the downstairs renovations,” Ms Bolton said.

“What was a damp, dingy and unworkable space is now a fantastic members’ area with toilets and showers, a proper first aid room and kitchen. Thank you to the

Queensland Government and Surf Life Saving Queensland for jointly funding the project, and everyone who has been part of the eight-year journey.”

Ms Bolton also congratulated club member Lyndon on being named Sunshine Coast Surf Trainer of the Year and said she looked forward to seeing the club’s planned upstairs refurbishment completed later this year.

The project — one of the largest in the Club’s history — has delivered a dedicated First Aid Room, a training room and member relaxation space, separate nipper changing areas, and a new ground-floor office accessible to the public. External works include replacement of ageing water mains, upgraded sewer infrastructure, improved drainage in the western carpark, and a new roof to protect the coastal facility for decades to come.

Club President Leigh McCready said the renovation was a credit to the many volunteers and local businesses who had donated their time and expertise.

“This renovation was deliv-

ered on time and on budget, and that is entirely a testament to our incredible team – the facilities committee, board members, our supporters club, sponsors and the volunteers who rolled up their sleeves at working bees,” Leigh said.

“We also thank local firms Altum Property Group and Stanford Consulting Engineers for donating their expertise to help us through the project. These facilities will help us attract new members and continue building towards a full complement of 12 patrols over the next two years.”

Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Ninderry MP Dan Purdie was also at the official launch.

“Peregian Beach SLSC has one of the most inspiring stories in Queensland surf lifesaving,” Mr Purdie said.

“This club wound up in 2014 and was kept alive through the generosity of Noosa Surf Club and was brought back to independence through the passion of local residents led by Leigh McCready. The Queensland Government is proud to have

partnered with SLSQ to deliver $928,000 to give this club the modern, fit-for-purpose facilities its members and the Peregian community deserve.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast Branch president Tim Ryan said the club’s journey was a great example of what a community could achieve.

“The team at Peregian Beach has put in an enormous amount of work to rebuild this club from the ground up, re-establishing the nippers program, growing membership and now delivering this major infrastructure project,” Tim said.

The official opening of the new member area was held as part of the Club’s 2026 Open Day which gave community members the opportunity to learn about joining the Nipper program or becoming a Peregian lifesaver. Nearly seven in 10 Australians believe homelessness could happen to almost anyone, while only 12 per cent think it is mainly the result of personal choices.

Wesley Mission managing director Bay Warburton said the survey reflected what frontline workers were seeing every day.

“One unexpected life event should not mean losing your home. Yet one in four Australians tell us they are not confident they could avoid homelessness if life takes an unexpected turn,” Mr Warburton said.

“Homelessness does not begin when someone sleeps

rough. It often begins much earlier with a rent increase, a lost job, serious illness, family violence or relationship breakdown. More Australians now recognise homelessness is not about blame. It can happen to almost anyone when life circumstances change.”

National peak body Homelessness Australia (HA) said Australia’s housing shortage is putting increasing pressure on people already doing it tough.

According to the organisation, there were 122,494 people experiencing homelessness on Census night in 2021, an increase of 5.2 per cent since 2016. More than one-third were children and young people under the age of 24.

The organisation said an

estimated three million Australians are now at risk of homelessness, where just one setback could leave them without secure housing. At the same time, affordable rentals remain out of reach for many people on low incomes, and homelessness services are struggling to meet demand.

LOCAL HELP Sunshine Coast Council estimates some 1,205 people are currently experiencing homelessness across the region and they have service providers listed on their website.

In Coolum, that support is visible every Tuesday morning outside the Uniting Church on Elizabeth Street, where two community organisations quietly lend a hand to

people doing it tough.

Orange Sky parks their distinctive orange van beside the church, offering free washing and drying of clothes, while the SOS Food Mart opens its doors next door with donated groceries, fresh produce and essential personal care items available for free.

Volunteers also put on tea, coffee and a simple meal when they can - creating a welcoming place where people can sit, chat and access practical support without judgement.

Both services have reported seeing increasing demand as the cost of living continues to rise. People seeking help range from those sleeping rough to families and workers struggling to keep up with soaring housing costs.

IS THERE A FIX FOR HOMELESSNESS? According to HA homelessness isn’t inevitable it’s the result of decades of underinvestment in social and affordable housing, and a housing market that has failed people on low incomes.

Australia has a shortfall of over 600,000 affordable rental homes, leaving more and more people without a viable path to secure housing. But housing alone isn’t enough.

Gaps in support systems such as mental health care, disability support, and family violence services, also leave people without the help they need to stay housed or recover from crisis. If people can find a home they can afford and get the right support, far fewer will become homeless, and those who do will have a faster path back to stability.

According to HA homelessness can be ended, but only if there is an investment in the solutions that work. Building more social and affordable housing would ease pressure in the rental market and give people a real chance at stability. Currently, social housing comprises about four per cent of total housing stock. The National Housing Supply and

Affordability Council is calling for targets of 10 per cent of housing stock to be social and affordable housing.

HA believes that the Housing First model is one of the most successful approaches to reducing long-term homelessness. Rather than expecting people to address issues such as mental health, alcohol and drug use or unemployment before they qualify for housing, the model provides people with a permanent home first, followed by the support they need to stay housed and rebuild their lives.

The model recognises that having a safe, secure place to live gives people the stability to focus on their health, employment, education and relationships.

Mr Warburton highlighted the importance of helping people before they reached crisis point.

“Crisis response alone is not enough. We need stronger prevention, early intervention and support before people lose their home.

“With the right support at the right time we can help people through life’s toughest moments before a housing crisis becomes homelessness.”

CLIMATE WARNINGS Dear editor, Watching the dramatic, climatic crises playout in record heatwave conditions in the Northern Hemisphere, should ring alarm bells here in Australia, as we face our drier than usual Southern Hemisphere weather approaching.

We live in the “Sunburnt Country”, where drought conditions cover a majority of inland space, but where the rich, coastal greenery is also a target for unbearable heat conditions, strong wind and wild fires.

Climate change sceptics need to take note of how devastating it is, to see the wild fires in Spain and France destroy every living thing over thousands of square kilometres, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate at short notice, with only the clothes on their backs. There is no time for complacency, when the uncontrollable wind and fastmoving fires become a deadly choice between saving lives or saving homes.

The biggest threat to human lives is complacency.

The recent general alarm practice nationwide, has revealed the hot spots of phone failure throughout the nation.

Not everyone received the warning. Should this occur in a real crisis, such as imminent fire or flooding, it may be disastrous for those dependent on regular monitoring.

Without the alarm sounding, or out of reach for assistance, makes us vulnerable. Lives

are at risk.

Our highly at risk, native flora and fauna, have been victims, when sudden changes occur in difficult, threatening circumstances in their habitat, with approaching wild fires. No escaping the intense heat and encroaching burning embers, when the very ground is itself on fire, has been a disaster for our precious native wildlife icons, in past climatic crises. We are in for a challenging summer season, with potential record heatwave conditions, so we need to take the threat seriously now. A climate crisis is a human crisis.

DEVELOPMENT STH COOLUM RD Dear editor, I have just been made aware of this development (Advertiser May13). I have seen the lakes which followed heavy rain in this are as per the photo. Local authorities have history in authorising developments in areas like this throughout Queensland and later when water problems occur their standard reply is “It’s not our problem, sort it out with your neighbour.”

Is it any wonder while authorities keep pursuing developments like this any worthwhile Federal Government will pay less and less of their responsibility towards damages? Of course it will inevitably be passed onto local

residents. This development should be ceased before it goes any further.

GRANDFATHERLY ADVICE Dear editor, There’s a wisdom you hear from a grandfather leaning back on the veranda, hands folded, eyes soft — simple on the surface, until life proves it wasn’t simple at all.

My grandfather, Pa Claude, dropped truths like fence posts: plain, sturdy, impossible to ignore once they were in the ground.

He’d say: If you don’t choose your path, you’ll end up walking someone else’s.

Expectations carry you along until you realise the life you’ve been living was never truly yours.

He’d warn: people don’t test your strength; they test your limits to see what you’ll tolerate.

He’d remind me: If you’re always explaining yourself, you’re with the wrong people.

The right ones don’t need footnotes.

And he’d cut through modern busyness with: A busy life can still be directionless. Motion isn’t meaning.

You can sprint through decades and still never arrive anywhere.

Then the one that stings: You don’t get stuck by accident; you stay stuck by habit.

And its companion: If you stay where you’ve outgrown, you’ll shrink. Comfort is a lovely place to visit, not to live.

Pa kept productivity simple: You don’t need more time; you need fewer distractions.

Respect? Earned by actions. Boundaries? If you can’t say no, you don’t control your life.

And perhaps his quietest truth: The wrong environment will change who you are.

Finally: What you ignore repeatedly will eventually control you.

Grandfatherly wisdom isn’t poetic. It’s lived in, weathered, and patient — waiting for the moment you realise you needed it.

I didn’t know how much of my life was shaped by Pa’s quiet sentences until he was gone, and I found myself reaching for them again.

FEDERAL SPENDING Dear editor, Australia is on the wrong path if it thinks spending up to $368 billion on nuclear submarines is the best answer to modern defence and national resilience.

Ukraine has shown the world that future warfare is being shaped by drones, electronic warfare, rapid innovation, and cheap, adaptable technology — not just by a handful of very expensive platforms that take years to deliver.

We should be learning from that reality, not locking ourselves into decades of massive cost and delay.

At the same time, Austra-

lia is still pouring money into land-based broadband models that do not properly meet the needs of regional and remote communities. That makes no sense. We should be investing in our own Starlink-type satellite capability that works at sea, in the air, in the bush, and in emergencies.

That would strengthen defence and provide real domestic benefits for farmers, remote households, emergency services, and regional businesses and tourism.

The blunt truth is this: we cannot afford to keep spending billions on yesterday’s ideas while neglecting the technologies that will actually matter in the future.

Australia needs smarter defence priorities, sovereign satellite communications, and practical technology that serves both national security and the people who live outside the cities.

COOLUM COMMUNITY GARDEN GROWS AGAIN AS LOCALS DIG IN

It’s time to complete your Census.

THE Coolum Common Community Garden is flourishing once again, with new members, new projects and a renewed focus on bringing the community together.

Located on the western edge of Jack Morgan Park and close to the new amenities block and picnic area, the 800-square-metre garden is inviting more locals to get involved – whether it’s lending a hand on a Wednesday morning, leasing a garden bed or simply enjoying the space.

Volunteer Claire Baker said it had been encouraging to see the garden come back to life this year.

“It has been disheartening over the years with the vandalism, but this year, with better security, there’s been far less trouble,” Claire said.

“Most things we’ve done have been designed to be vandal-proof and people are starting to feel comfortable coming back. We’d love to see more people come down and enjoy the space.”

The garden has undergone a major refresh, with volunteers reorganising the layout, building 11 new garden beds and expanding both the food forest and fruit tree orchard.

More projects are also in the pipeline as membership continues to grow.

For many members however, the garden is about much more than growing plants.

Ms Baker said the weekly Wednesday morning gatherings had become an opportunity for people to make friends, swap gardening tips and build connections.

“We have an amazing group of volunteers,” Claire said.

“It’s a really nice outdoor meeting place where people can share knowledge. Some have moved here from other

parts of Australia and are learning about what grows well in this climate, while others have years of gardening experience to pass on.

“It’s rewarding to see what you’ve grown, but it’s also about creating a welcoming place where people feel connected.”

The community has also been lending a hand and recently, 28 Year 10 students from The Industry School volunteered at the garden as part of the school’s community service program, helping with a range of improvement projects.

Ms Baker hopes more local groups will make use of the space, including homeschool families and playgroups, with a book library also available on site.

The garden’s compost group is also working with local cafes to divert food waste from landfill, turning it into compost that helps keep the gardens thriving.

People wanting to be involved can simply sign up for free online and keep in the loop via regular email newsletters. Those wanting to get more hands-on can lease a garden bed from $60 a year or officially sign up for just $10 which will cover a family, with the cost covering insurance and other running costs.

The growing and compost groups meet every Wednesday from 10am, and new faces are always welcome.

“We want to hear people’s ideas and help bring them to life,” Ms Baker said.

“There’s a place for everyone here.”

IT WAS another beautiful blue-sky day here on the Sunny Coast, and everything was in balance. To keep this balance the practice of yoga helps with deep listening, respect, shared meaning and shared knowledge being truly rich, diverse, and inclusive.

The similarities of yoga and our First Nations people’s cultural practices with their connection to country, dreamtime storytelling and deepest respect for all living things on this sacred Earth is quite evident.

In passing on knowledge we need deep listening and relationships with awareness as we listen to nature, ourselves, our elders, and our children. In achieving harmony, First Nation’s people use the

metaphor of the “brackish water” with the ebb and flow of the tides, the change from freshwater to saltwater and back.

The cross-cultural relationship between yoga from the Orient and Australian First Nations is like a walking together with body, mind, and spirit. In yoga we work with energy centres in the body like the throat. With the throat development our communication and self-expression abilities can improve. Some specific yoga exercises help the flow of energy, and together with listening to healing music and engaging in vocal expression, we connect to our authentic self and the ability to express thoughts and feelings more clearly.

Santa Paws raises much needed funds for 4Paws Animal Rescue Despite wet weather, plenty of two and four-legged locals turned out for the annual Santa Paws fundraiser which was held at Lake Kawana on Sunday July 19.

There was lots of wagging tails, festive outfits and community spirit and families and their pets enjoyed a Christmas-themed walk, dog competitions, market stalls, raffles, a silent auction and plenty of food, all in support of Sunshine Coast animal rescue organisation 4Paws.

The popular event raised much-needed funds to help 4Paws continue rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming vulnerable cats and dogs across the Sunshine Coast.

Event Showcase NOOSA PENGARI CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL

Celebrating 30 Years of Community ON SUNDAY August 23 the Noosa Pengari Steiner School will host their annual Children’s Festival, and the joyful and colourful festival will also feature an extra special celebratory theme as the Noosa hinterland school marks their 30th anniversary.

The festival will become a celebration of three decades of community, creativity and childhood in Doonan and everyone is invited to come along and celebrate what is going to be a wholesome family day out full of heart and community connectedness.

The story of Noosa Pengari Steiner School (NPSS) began quietly. In the mid 1990s a small group of families gathered around a Steiner study group at the Noosa Library and a playgroup at the Tewantin CWA Hall, drawn together by the idea of a different kind of education.

In 1996 that dream opened

its doors, with a preschool group and a single combined Class 1 and 2 of just ten children.

There was barely a tree on the site, and for that first year the primary class was held off site at the Noosaville Sea Scout Hall, where families packed the whole classroom away twice a week so the hall could still be used for other groups.

Two century old Queenslanders were relocated to the grounds to become the earliest classrooms - one the former principal’s residence from Cooroy State School, the other the old Cooroy Railway Station master’s residence.

Getting them ready took what one founding staff member fondly remembers as ‘mad working bees’ and an enormous amount of goodwill.

From those ten students the school has grown to around 350 today, from kindergarten through to Class 12.

Along the way it opened its own high school in 2008, and more recently became one of the first schools in Australia to offer the Certificate of

Steiner Education - a fully recognised senior qualification that lets students follow a complete Steiner curriculum all the way to graduation.

The wider Steiner movement has roughly doubled across the country over the same 30 years. Perhaps the loveliest measure of the school’s growth, though, is the number of former students now returning, some as staff, others to enrol children of their own.

FESTIVAL FUN ON OFFER The festival itself is woven through that history. In the school’s early days it was known as the Spring Festival, and long-time families still smile about the year torrential rain turned the then dirt road into a river and the whole event had to be postponed.

Three decades on, the road is sealed, the trees have grown tall, and the festival has become one of the most loved community gatherings on the Sunshine Coast.

There is something for every age. For little ones, there is endless delight in the ever-popular gem hunt and the magical river run, floating nature boats, meeting friendly farmyard animals, pony rides, beeswax candle dipping, nature garland making and tie-dye. Older kids can test themselves on the low ropes course, the rockclimbing wall and this year’s brand-new mega obstacle course or share a tune at the student run chai tent. Grownups, you are not forgotten, with the enchanting treasure house of handcrafted toys, the pre-loved clothing and book stall, a plant stall and a mini market of local goods. Food is also on offer with the famous cake house, a curry kitchen, sushi and other nourishing local fare. A major raffle and a silent auction full of local treasures round out the day.

Music sits at the heart of this year’s celebration and the festival will be officially opened by Noosa Mayor Frank Wilkie, a past teacher and alumnus of the school, together with local singer and performing arts teacher Jo Hendrie. The main stage hosts live performances all day, building to a first for the festival, an afternoon set from a travelling headline band.

A new sound immersion space in the auditorium offers a quieter corner of choirs and crystal singing bowls, the roving sounds of Zach Threads drift through the grounds, and the chai tent open mic welcomes anyone moved to play. In keeping with the spirit of the day, there is no pressure, and no performance required, just the freedom to wander, create and enjoy.

The Noosa Pengari Children’s Festival runs from 10am to 3pm on Sunday August 23, 2026, and entry is free. Parking is available off Fellowship Drive in Doonan, with a free shuttle bus and a short walk to the school.

The gift of life: One conversation can save lives DONATELIFE WEEK – JULY 26 TO AUGUST 2

WHEN Coolum resident Belinda lost her life partner Damien to a catastrophic stroke, she found comfort in knowing that even in death, he was able to give others a second chance at life.

Damien donated his kidneys and liver, helping save the lives of three Australians.

"He would also have donated his pancreas," Belinda said.

"But because it was during the height of the COVID restrictions, it was logistically impossible to transport it to another recipient."

As the country recognises DonateLife Week (July 26-August 2), Belinda is encouraging others to do two simple things – register as an organ donor and, just as importantly, tell family and next of kin about that decision.

In Australia, registering as an organ donor through Medicare or the Australian Organ Donor Register does not automatically guarantee your donation will proceed.

Your family (or legal next of kin) is still asked to confirm your wishes and provide consent before organ donation goes ahead. If they object, the medical team will not proceed with the donation.

This is why DonateLife puts so much emphasis on having the conversation, not

just registering.

The message comes as new DonateLife figures show Queensland continues to lag behind the national average for organ donor registrations.

While 35 per cent of eligible Australians are registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register, Queensland sits at just 30 per cent.

According to DonateLife, around 2,000 Australians are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. One organ donor has the potential to save up to seven lives and improve many more through eye and tissue donation.

Belinda and Damien had been together for almost 20 years and had moved to Coolum in late 2015, believing they had found their forever home.

When Damien suffered a catastrophic stroke in the early hours of the morning in August 2020 he was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital before being transferred to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, where he died three days later.

Both Belinda and Damien had already registered as organ donors.

"At the time I thought, how amazing that Damien can help other people at such a horrendous time," Belinda said.

"It's not just potentially life-changing for the recipi-

ent, there's a ripple effect that comes with being an organ donor. You change more than just the recipient's life, you change the life of all the loved ones around them. You're giving them more time with the person they love."

Belinda said one of the biggest misconceptions was that registering as an organ donor was enough.

"Have the conversation. It's so important to have the conversation so your next of kin and loved ones know your wishes."

DonateLife state that family consent remains one of the biggest barriers to organ donation. While more than 70 per cent of Australians support organ donation, families are far more likely to agree if they already know what their loved one wanted.

"I can understand why next of kin find it difficult to say yes if the time comes, but if your loved one has made the selfless choice to give a stranger a chance at a healthier, longer life, then please honour their final wish," Belinda said.

"It's the most difficult time of your life to say goodbye,

but there has to be some good that comes from so much pain, and I recall especially in the very early days after Damien passed that his gift to others gave me a lot of comfort."

DonateLife Queensland Nursing Director Tina Coco AO said every registration mattered.

"There are currently around 2,000 Australians on the organ transplant waitlist who need Australia's help. For those waiting it can be a matter of life and death," Tina said.

"This DonateLife Week, I'm urging everyone to please register as an organ and tissue donor. Then, talk to your family – let them know you want to be a donor. Someone's life depends on it."

Registering as an organ and tissue donor takes about a minute through Medicare or the Australian Organ Donor Register. To register simply scan the QR code below and have your Medicare card details to put into the online form and then have that chat with your next of kin or family and let them know of your wishes.

CHANGING YOUR NAME

BY LAW any person over the age of 18 is entitled to change their name simply by assuming and adopting a new one. It’s totally legal to start calling yourself by another name, as long as it’s not offensive and you’re not making the change for the purposes of fraud. But try taking that to the bank!

Most government departments, banks and other institutions, and employers will require evidence of a person’s identity before engaging with them. And the types of proof generally required (birth certificate, drivers’ licence, passport etc) will not reflect an informally adopted name. So, in reality, informal assumption of a new name is only suitable where a person intends to be known by friends and family under the new name but is happy for their registered name to be used for official purposes.

An exception is generally made for women changing their surname after marriage or divorce, with a copy of the marriage certificate or decree nisi of divorce usually enough to request a change be made to institutional records. Interestingly a formal change of name registration will generally be

RECENTLY, we had the privilege of welcoming parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson to Coolum State High School to speak with parents about one of the biggest challenges facing families today. Justin is well known across Australia through his television work and best-selling books, and we were incredibly grateful to our P&C Association for making the evening happen.

Bringing someone of Justin’s calibre to our community was a wonderful initiative.

As I looked around the room that night, I was reminded that, regardless of our children’s ages, most parents are asking the same question: How do we help our children grow into happy, healthy young adults in a world that seems so different from the one we grew up in?

Much of the discussion centred on social media. Justin shared compelling research about its impact on young people’s mental health, relationships and sense of self.

He also reminded us that the world’s biggest technology companies invest billions of dollars into designing platforms that keep us scrolling for as long as possible. That’s a sobering thought for any parent.

The reality is that social media has changed childhood.

Most of us know that. The harder part is knowing what to do about it.

required for a hyphenated surname to be accepted.

In every other instance the formal process must be used.

Australian-born persons must make application to the registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the State in which they were born. Overseas-born persons residing in Queensland can also apply here.

Changing name by Deed Poll, hasn’t been a thing for about forty years, but you will still hear the term if ever you raise the topic in company.

Most of the time it’s as simple as submitting an application form which can largely be competed online, along with certified supporting documents including three forms of ID. Name changes in Queensland are restricted to once every twelve months!

There is a fee for the change of name and another fee for a change of name certificate or updated birth certificate showing the new name.

Very occasionally there is a hiccup and legal advice, or even an application to the Magistrates Court, might be required, but generally changing your name is an administrative process rather than a legal one.

A MARCOOLA RESIDENT WHO IS ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

NATIVES IT IS That time of the year when it is wonderful to walk in nature due to the abundance of natives that are growing. On the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, it has been recognised we have world class natural environs with the Sunshine Coast and Noosa UNESCO Biospheres all around us. A walk in one of the national parks will give you an opportunity to enjoy wildflowers a plenty. Shades of white, purple and yellow abound in the native flora in late winter attracting important insects like native bees and butterflies.

My favourite national park walk for wildflowers is from Park Edge to Alexandria Bay in Noosa National Park which has a wide variety of flowering natives high up on the dune behind Sunshine Beach. There are many native plant walks such as those at Mount Emu and Mount Gul’um National Parks and their native flora spills over into our villages at Coolum and Marcoola.

With urbanisation continuing to spread, the need to plant native species in our gardens and in pots on apartment balconies is significant. I have planted midyim berrys (austromyrtus dulcis), yellow buttons, golden candle sticks (banksia spinulosa), purple pea bushes (hovea), banksia roburs and lillypillies to name a few.

The banksias in particular will attract nectar feeding birds, and you can go for that cottage garden look or a more

formal garden approach with natives. Whatever you choose can enhance the flyways and pathways for our native birds and animals, improving the liveability of your environment and sustaining the biosphere.

We are fortunate to be able to source plants from the Coolum Community Native Nursery at Yaroomba where Tim Lang, Sara Lawson and other team members can help you select plants for your garden or pot. Tim and Sarah were invited by the Marcoola Community Group to present a community information session on “Creating Coastal Native Gardens” recently at the Marcoola Surf Club. The talk was well received, and they are a great resource to members of the community who wish to learn more about native plants – get in touch with them via the native nursery.

I love our native plants and if I can get them to thrive they must be hardy, and this is definitely their home. Enjoy our stunning natives either by planting at your home or by admiring on a local walk.

MEMBER FOR NOOSA E-BIKES QUEENSLAND Police have launched a statewide enforcement campaign targeting the unsafe and illegal use of e-bikes, e-scooters and other personal mobility devices under Queensland’s new emobility laws. Running until June 30, 2027, the operation focuses on dangerous behaviours such as speeding, drink riding, failing to wear a helmet and using non-compliant devices. Following our question on notice, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads advised that an e-bike assurance scheme is currently in consultation phase and will provide e-bike users who purchased compliant e-bikes without a valid compliance label an assessment pathway to have their devices verified.

We have requested clarification on whether the scheme will also apply to e-bikes fitted with aftermarket conversion kits.

WASTE Following our June 2025 submission to the draft Queensland Waste Strategy 2025–2035, we welcomed the release of the final strategy, with many of the priorities we advocated for reflected within. This includes commitments around product stewardship, battery safety and recycling, soft plastics, packaging reform and solar panel recycling. The strategy also includes actions to expand battery collection points and improve recycling capacity, with Noosa Coun-

cil securing $2.18 million to construct a covered resource recovery facility in partnership with regional councils, helping improve recycling and manage future waste streams.

New signs state dogs banned at beach in Coolum where sand artist works VANESSA HALL EDITOR

THE NEW Sunshine Coast Council dog laws which came into effect from Friday July 3 have now thrown the work of a popular sand artist into question.

For the past two years Owen Cavanagh who is known as the ‘Rakey Master’ has been down at the beach on dawn creating sand murals on the southern part of Coolum Beach - often many times in one week and always with his trusty best mate, ‘Max’ the blue staffy by his side - securely on leash.

Owen uses that beach site as people can easily see his work from the Coolum Boardwalk which is directly above.

The new dog laws and new signage show that dogs are now banned from beach access 81 (where the Coolum Boardwalk starts) to beach access 82 (First Bay) and the new rules have taken many by surprise.

Owen said this not only affected him but many others who walk the entire length of the beach up to where the rocks start.

“Unless you see that sign, people won’t know that dogs are now banned,” Owen said.

People can walk their dog on a leash from where the northern part of the caravan park is to just south of where the beach volleyball net is and from that area south, dogs are now banned.

Many dog owners have

been taken aback that the new restrictions start at that particular spot, artist Owen being one of them.

“Max goes everywhere with me and I didn’t realise these new rules would ban dogs from this part of the beach.”

Keeping rocky foreshores protected Sunshine Coast Council state that the changes to Rocky Foreshores and Headlands of which Point Perry is one, “will support effective protection of environmental and cultural values on our rocky foreshores and support effective management.”

In order to do this, “a 725m section of rocky foreshore will change from on-leash to dogs prohibited at all times, south of beach access 81 to beach access 82.”

Division 8 Councillor Taylor Bunnag stated that whilst the area in question was not in his division he was also stumped by the new provision.

“The local law discussed restrictions to the Point Perry Rocky Foreshore which to me makes sense, but I am troubled to see the change applying to areas that are not rocky foreshore south of Beach Access 81.”

Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez offered a more thorough explanation as to how the area in question came to be restricted to dogs.

“When complaints came through, I questioned the

DEA (Dog Exercise Area) team about using BA81 as the starting point for restriction. The response was that it is considered rocky foreshore as when the sand is low the rocky foreshore is exposed.

“As a local, I acknowledge that the area is more often covered with sand than it is exposed.”

Council official reply An official response from a Sunshine Coast Council representative to the Advertiser stated that, “Council aligned dog access areas with existing beach access points.”

“Coastal conditions can change with tides, sand movement and weather. Signed beach access points provide a consistent location reference, even when the beach or foreshore looks different.”

Council also stated that the current arrangements would remain and will be reviewed through the scheduled fiveyear review of the plan.

Cr Suarez did state that she was personally trying to find a workable solution for all impacted.

“I have contacted the team regarding the location of the signage, stating those on the beach would not see it.

“On Friday, I also took the CEO to the area to explain the issue and discuss options going forward. Suggestions or options will need to be worked on, and I won’t be able to provide any definitive outcomes as yet,” Cr Suarez said.

The Advertiser asked Council if they would be lenient on dog walkers who were caught off guard by the new restriction.

“Council officers take a measured approach and consider the circumstances of each situation when responding to reports of non-

compliance,” the Council representative said.

“Our officers have been engaging directly with dog owners to help them understand the new rules and no fines have been issued in relation to the new dog access rules to date.”

Council is also urging people to “know before they go” in order to avoid what could be a costly day out.

“Check beach signage, use Council’s online mapping tool and visit the dog exercise areas webpage before heading out.”

DAISIES I CAN’T wait for my daisy bushes to start flowering. I have the Marguerite variety which grow as a small shrub.

It has lots of buds at the moment, so come Spring I should have some pretty white flowers. The Marguerite daisy is one of my favourite plants, and it can flower right from late winter through to late spring as long as it is happy. I like the white flower - so pure and simple but looks very elegant in a vase.

The pink one is pretty too and there are some other lovely colours as well. It is classed as an herbaceous perennial and is very hardy, but can’t handle frosty conditions.

They need about 6 hours of sunshine, preferring a position out of strong wind, but hey, it’s only one variety out of about 20,000 species.

The daisy (Asteraceae) belongs to one of the largest groups of plants in the world. It’s impossible to mention them all, but some other popular varieties grow happily in our gardens. Ones like the painted daisy, the English daisy, African daisy, Shasta daisy, asters, and even the sunflower and the gerbera.

Not forgetting the thousands of species of Australian na-

tive plants that inhabit all States.

The natives like slightly different conditions to their cousins, instead of a healthy, well composted soil, the native plants have been conditioned to a lighter, more acidic soil.

Daisies hate wet feet so a well-drained soil is essential. Some popular native plants that will grow in our domestic gardens are the everlasting daisy (Bracteantha) and the Swan River daisy (Brachyscome). With these two, it’s best to avoid any fertiliser containing phosphorus or heavy composting - the soil should be light with a pH of about 5.5 - 6.5.

The everlasting daisy (or strawflower) has delightful papery flowers that when dried, will last for several years. The Swan River daisy, usually blue, is a beautiful low spreading plant that adds vibrant colour to any garden.

Did you know some West Australian plants are endemic to that state? More than 60% are not found anywhere else in the world!

A look back in time FRANCES WINDOLF

A LONG TIME COOLUM RESIDENT WITH A PASSION FOR LOCAL HISTORY

ANYTHING BUT A PLEASURE CRUISE THE TREASURE OF YAROOMBA! IMAGINE that you and eleven other people are part of the crew on a sailing ship, travelling past the beautiful Yaroomba Beach at 3am on the cold Saturday morning of July 19 in 1862, when disaster strikes! A combination of strong south-east winds and strong tides push the ship your on towards the shore, where the strong breakers nearly smash its timber sides.

The Captain, a Welshman named Evan Williams, orders one of the ship’s boats to head to shore, towing a heavy rope hawser which is tied to the nearest strong tree, so that the crew can hang on to it and save their lives.

The beach is sandy, and this gives the crew time to gather provisions — bread, meat and butter — and a little clothing, but it is obvious that the ship, the brig Kirkdale, which was carrying you and the crew to Ceylon [Sri Lanka] to collect a cargo of tea, is wrecked beyond repair.

As you stand, shivering on the beach, a fire breaks out, and the wooden ship burns as you watch, leaving only the lower timbers wet on the sands. Everyone is distraught and exhausted, and you all wait beside the wreckage until daylight, when the Captain sends five men in the long-boat, carrying your clothes and other items, to alert the authorities at Cowan Cowan, on Moreton Island.

On the Monday the Captain and the other six sailors (of

which you are one) set off along the shore to ‘tramp it’ to Brisbane.

As you walk along the beach you come across a group of indigenous people, and although you are initially scared, they are kind to you, and guide you to the area known as Mooroooochie, where a Mr Richard Jones lends you a boat and a man, to take you to Brisbane on the Thursday. You are so pleased to get there, because you are starving, and without proper clothes or shoes — a group of police have gone looking for you - but missed you on the way.

On Thursday July 31,1862, you and your shipmates post a newspaper advertisement, which concludes- “We now humbly appeal to the inhabitants of Brisbane to subscribe on our behalf, that we may be enabled to procure decent apparel and employment in this our now adopted country, for we are in an entirely destitute state.”

What happened to the Kirkdale? Only a few timbers are left, at Black Gully, Yaroomba — where they must stay, because Australian Government laws will punish anyone who removes them from the site. However, permission has been given for part of one of the Kirkdale’s strong wooden ribs (which was removed after a flood in 1972) to be displayed in Coolum Library — it is worth going to the library to view it and marvel at the journey the ship and its crew undertook many years ago.

AT 18, Bella Girl should be spending her days stretched out in a sunny spot, curled up on her heated throw and enjoying the comfort of home. Instead, she’s back in the 4 Paws cattery.

Bella Girl first came into the care of 4 Paws Animal Rescue about three years ago. She settled into a loving permanent foster home, but sadly her carer passed away. Since then, a temporary foster carer has lovingly looked after Bella Girl, but with that carer now going away, she’s back in the cattery.

The 4 Paws volunteers provide devoted care and attention, but for an elderly cat who is used to a home, a cattery is a difficult adjustment.

Bella Girl is part of the 4 Paws Permanent Resident Program, meaning all her vet care, including her monthly arthritis injections are covered for life. Her permanent carer simply needs to provide the love, home and transport to vet appointments.

Sadly, Bella Girls’ story isn’t unique. 4 Paws Animal Rescue is seeing more senior pets needing new homes because of changing life circumstances, yet they’re often the last to find a home.

Yet Bella Girl is everything you could hope for in a senior companion.

She’s affectionate, social and loves being close to her people. She’ll happily keep you company around the house and isn’t shy about letting you know when dinner time is approaching! Her favourite place to sleep is right beside you and she absolutely loves curling up on a warm, heated throw. And despite being 18, she’s still a champion soccer player with a ping pong ball!

After everything Bella Girl has been through, we’re hoping her next move is into the forever home she deserves.

COOLUM COLTS FINALS BOUND

THIS SUNDAY Coolum Colts will play their last home games of the season with Coolum hosting Maroochydore on August 9 with the women kicking off from 12 noon, Reserves at 1.30pm and Coolum A Grade Men at 3pm.

With two rounds to go the

Colts are placed second in A Grade, third in Reserve Grade, third in Open Women’s and fifth in U19.

Depending on the results in the final two rounds the Colts could have all teams playing finals in three weeks’ time.

Last Sunday the Colts travelled to Beerwah to take on the Bulldogs in Reserve and

A Grade while the other two grades played Caboolture.

The A Grade captained by local junior Joseph Price defeated Beerwah 28 to 14.

Coolum scored five tries and kicked four conversions to claim a convincing win over the Bulldogs.

The Reserve Grade was defeated 32 to 16 by Beerwah.

The Open Women’s team went down to Caboolture 48 to nil.

The U19 men were defeated

by Caboolture to the tune of 26 to 8.

This Sunday the U19 men have a bye. The Open Women’s, Reserve Grade and A Grade all take on Maroochydore at the Ronnie Cargill

Oval, Coolum with games starting at 12 noon.

Club Secretary Zarn Love said it would be a great achievement for the Club if all four grades made the semi-finals and local support this coming weekend for the last home games was important.
