“Know before you go” Council set to introduce new dog laws from July 3 VANESSA HALL EDITOR

IN WHAT has involved more than a year of planning and featured public consultation, Sunshine Coast Council will be implementing their new local laws in relation to where and when dogs can either be on or off-leash from Friday July 3.

Major changes in our region include restrictions at Lake Weyba, seasonal restrictions at Twin Waters and the banning of dogs on any sports fields and at rocky foreshores such as Point Perry.

Since the outset of the proposed changes back in February 2025 there has been strong opposition to taking away dog off-leash access especially in the Coolum region and a local action group mobilised in response.

BUREAU OF METEROLOGY WINTER FORECAST THE BUREAU of Meteorology has released its winter long-range forecast showing rainfall is likely to be below average for most central, southern and eastern parts of Australia.

While rainfall is expected to be below average in these regions, there is still a high chance of some rain with the typical winter rainfall across southern areas being 100 to 400 mm around the coast and 25 to 100 mm inland.

Temperatures this winter are likely to be above average across most of Australia. This follows a warmer than average autumn.

Despite the warmer than average forecast, cold snaps bringing low temperatures, frost or snow are still possible during winter.

Long-range forecasts provide an overall seasonal trend but do not predict short term weather systems.

The Bureau’s long-range

forecast is updated fortnightly and considers a range of models and influences such as El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

While the ENSO is currently neutral, all models indicate El Niño is likely to develop this winter.

El Niño typically influences rainfall over northern, central and eastern Australia from winter into early summer, roughly June to December, with this influence typically peaking during the spring months.

While historical experience of El Niño events can create an expectation that these events will be the same each time they occur, no two El Niño events are the same.

QUEENSLAND FORECAST Winter rainfall is likely to be below average for Queensland’s central and southern areas.

Typical winter rainfall in

recent decades has been between 50 and 100 mm across much of Queensland’s south and east, increasing to 200 mm along much of the east coast. Western and central Queensland typically have between 10 and 50 mm and the north-west has less than 10 mm.

While rainfall is expected to be below average for most of the state this winter, there should still be some rain, just less than usual.

It is currently northern Australia’s dry season where most of the tropical north typically has very low rainfall. While the forecast shows above average rainfall is likely for some parts of the state’s far north, this may only result in small amounts of rain.

Above average temperatures are likely across most of the state both in the day and overnight, except for some northern inland areas where daytime temperatures may be closer to average.

Gambling grants a big win for local community groups

THE CRISAFULLI Government has delivered almost $20 million in grants to more than 800 not-for profit community organisations across Queensland in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF), with over 200 groups awarded the maximum grant of $35,000.

The program delivers support to a wide range of projects, assisting with financial costs including facility upgrades, purchasing vehicles, equipment and supplies, and delivering training pro-

grams and community events.

For more than 30 years the GCBF has distributed approximately $60 million per year directly into community services across Queensland, including sporting clubs, dedicated volunteer groups and local organisations.

Round 126 of the GCBF again attracted strong interest, with more than 2,000 applications from across the State.

Tackling men’s health one chat at a time VANESSA HALL EDITOR

AS CONVERSATIONS continue around men’s health, mental wellbeing and the search for positive male role models and whilst focusing on Men’s Health Week (15–21 June) two organisations are taking on the challenge of promoting better male health one chat at a time.

According to national notfor-profit organisation ‘The Men’s Table’, positive role models are not always found on sporting fields, social media platforms or public stages, and via a series of informal chats men from all walks of life are being heard and taking positive health steps.

Since launching in Sydney in 2019 with a single group of 12 men, The Men’s Table has grown to more than 296 Tables across Australia, supporting more than 2,800 men through regular conversations focused on life, health and wellbeing.

Similarly, local charity ‘Grab Life By The Balls’ (GLBTB) which formed on the Sunshine Coast 10 years ago and has spread as far north as Townsville, west to the Barossa and south to Warrnambool, is also helping men by way of checking in via an informal chat and catch up.

The Men’s Table cofounder and chief executive officer David Pointon said that they are, “redefining strength as something that in-

cludes care, vulnerability and connection.”

The organisation’s newly released 2025 Impact Report, ‘A Thousand Men’s Voices’, highlights six years of evidence showing that connection is not simply a social benefit, but an effective preventative mental health tool.

The report comes as men’s health and wellbeing receive increasing national attention.

Representatives from The Men’s Table recently met with Assistant Minister for Social Services and the Prevention of Family Violence, Ged Kearney, and Special Envoy for Men’s Health, Dan Repacholi, during the launch of the Australian Government’s National Healthy Men Community Conversations project in Victoria.

For The Men’s Table, the national discussion reinforces what its own members have been saying for years and their report backs up with statistics.

The report found 93 per cent of surveyed members feel heard, seen and understood at their Table, while 85 per cent say participation supports their mental health and wellbeing. More than threequarters said they would feel comfortable calling someone from their Table if they were going through a difficult time.

The benefits are also being felt beyond the men themselves. Sixty-eight per cent of members said they are better able to model healthy versions of being a man, while 60 per cent reported being more

capable of caring for their families. More than half said they are better able to contribute to their communities.

The report includes stories from men whose lives have been changed through the simple act of regular connection and Mr Pointon said they are seeing a shift in how many men are defining healthy masculinity.

“The men at our Tables are not asking for permission to care. They are already doing it,” he said.

“What we are seeing is a powerful counter-narrative.

Men want deeper connection, they want to be better listeners, better fathers, better friends, better partners and better members of their communities.”

GRABBING LIFE BY THE BALLS IN COOLUM Founder of GLBTB Sam Parker furthered the benefits of having a chat with other men and how beneficial that can be.

“When you get guys together to connect and put that emphasis on catching up we found that over time that if you want to make a positive change to your health, if you have three or four close mates you can call on it releases both physical and mental health pressures.”

With no pressure to sign up or have skills, GLBTB is simply about “mateship”.

“Come as you are and talk about anything – the weather, the footy, whatever! We have made this as easy and acces-

sible as possible.”

Sam stated that often it was women who found out about the group online and then encouraged the men in their lives to come along.

“We have lots of men who are over 45 come along but there is no age limit apart from being over 18 and we have men, the ‘wingmen’ who are on hand in case there’s ever any big issues that need to be heard.”

GLBTB is a registered charity, and they have many local ‘chats’ in the region with groups catching up on Monday mornings from 6.30am in Coolum, Wednesday at Mudjimba, Thursday at Peregian and Sunday morning at Bli Bli. “It would be great to get some more guys come along to Coolum on Monday mornings and there’s no registration or anything, just rock up!”

BUDGET RESPONSE Dear editor, Another Council budget, another year Division 8 apparently subsidises other areas.

Compare the Capital Works Highlights for adjacent Divisions: Division 8, $7,474,503; Division 9, $19,175,118 (NOT including the Nambour Landfill works – add $13M); Division 4, $32,109,394 (NOT including the Mooloolaba Seawall works – add $21M).

Coolum District Sports Facilities - $6M; Honey Farm (Division 3) Sports Facilities – nearly $17M (this is not part of the Bokarina Stadium upgrade); North Shore Football Club? - $10,000 for “carpark design”. What happened to the Indoor Sports Complex proposal tossed around earlier this year? Another “nonannouncement”, even with the caveat that North Shore would be vying with the Honey Farm precinct for it?

What about even some openair hardcourt facilities there?

As for the South Coolum Road/Suncoast Beach Drive extensions - $1.25M for “design”, on top of last year’s $300,000. Seriously? There is talk of $36M being allocated for construction in 2029-30, subject to another caveat regarding TMR’s schedule for the Motorway on/off ramps. Will this be another exercise in obfuscation like the Mt Coolum amenities block (eventually paid for by QPWS)?

It’s been suggested that the Nojour Road boat ramp area also needs an amenities block. There’s no need for a sewer connection – there are several “waterless” alternatives if Council cares to look.

Most of the listed budget items are low cost “renewals”, this budget’s buzzword. Surely renewals are a maintenance item, not a Capital Works “highlight”! What about some serious investment north of the River? New/extended footpaths, improved drainage, a wider range of sporting facilities, road safety features, beautification projects spread throughout the community.

Division 8 has as many

residents as the others. We pay our rates like everyone else, and many pay a coastal premium courtesy of land valuations. Council adds insult to injury by increasing rates by 9.7% at the same time as valuations have significantly increased.

Many valuations in my area have increased over 50%, not the “average 24%” quoted in media. What will the actual rate increase be? And what improvements (not maintenance) will Division 8 see for it, particularly north of the River? Minimal compared to other Divisions. It’s a disgrace.

STADIUM REPLY Dear editor, The legislative progress so enthused by E.Rowe comes on the back of a broken promise to protect heritage and environmental land, the basis of our “winning” the Olympic Games for Brisbane in 2032. In accord with the contempt displayed toward the Indigenous inhabitants of this area for thousands of years, in June 2025 the State Government passed legislation to exempt Olympic venues from major planning and environment laws: effectively by-passing Victoria Park’s heritage listing.

The protests of our First Nations people have been joined by large gatherings of their fellow Australians expressing outrage at what ex-Premier Campbell Newman called “an act of barbarism” and a group of genteel little old ladies vowing to fight until this destruction of their beloved park, ceases, pronto!

Besides the fact that this is public land comprising inner Brisbane’s last remaining sizeable green space, it also contains the only still functioning aquifer in the Brisbane region. The addition of a gigantic stadium, overpasses, associated infrastructure and increased traffic within an already busy intersection between three major schools; a hospital;

the Exhibition Grounds and a university - will surely remove any resemblance to a valued city space.

Perhaps I could remind E.Rowe that any glory emanating from these Games, would reflect on Australia as a whole, not particularly on Queensland. If we are to be subjected to the Olympic hooha in 2032, could the venue be relocated to an area not of heritage value to our First Nations, and also my fellow Australians, who if I recall, were not asked if we actually wanted the invasion of these athletic achievers and their audience.

After all, why would we need the Olympics, when we have the Socceroos?

WRITING FOR HEALTH Dear editor, There is something sacred about the way grandmothers write. The slow curve of a letter. The quiet pause before a thought becomes ink.

Dr Hiroshi Tanaka never set out to study grandmothers. He wanted to understand why some seniors in Kyoto - well into their eighties - remained so mentally sharp.

He expected genetics, diet, or perhaps some rare herb grown on a misty mountainside.

But the secret was far more familiar. They wrote. Every day. Ten to fifteen minutes.

Ink on paper.

Tanaka’s brain scans revealed what many families have felt all along: handwriting awakens the mind. It strengthens memory, focus, and clarity. It keeps the inner world alive.

When he tested it, older adults who wrote by hand for six months showed stronger

recall and quicker thinking than those who typed the same words.

The pen wasn’t preserving memories. It was nurturing the mind. Perhaps that’s why his research feels so deeply connected to grandmothers.

Grandmothers have always written. Letters to loved ones far away. Recipes passed down with smudges of butter. Birthday cards with a five dollar note tucked inside. Little reminders stuck to fridges and mirrors. Stories scribbled in notebooks no one else has seen.

Their handwriting is more than ink. It is presence. It is love made visible.

In a world that rushes, grandmothers slow down. In a world that forgets, they remember. In a world that taps and swipes, they still choose the steady honesty of a pen.

Maybe that’s the quiet lesson Tanaka uncovered - the mind stays alive when the heart stays involved.

So to every grandmother who picks up a pen to write a note, a memory, a prayer, a recipe, a reminder - thank you. You are not just keeping track of life. You are keeping your mind awake to it. And the generations who love you are grateful for your every word.

RATES Dear editor, So our Sunshine Coast Council has budgeted for a

9.7% rate rise. The Mayor has stated it is a financially responsible increase. It is beyond belief that an increase almost three times the rate of inflation is “responsible”. The Mayor’s spin doctors must have been working unpaid overtime to come up with that excuse. It’s getting hard to believe anything that politicians spruik these days.

SALOVOS RED SHIELD APPEAL Dear editor, It is important to take advantage of moments throughout the year to reflect.

To take stock of the blessings, the successes and the positive moments in your life.

In the past couple of weeks, The Salvation Army have had the chance to reflect on the incredible spirit of generosity that pervades our Australian culture.

We saw Australia come together and dig deep for our Red Shield Appeal weekend recently. We witnessed radical kindness and support, and for that, we say an enormous Thank You. However, for the Salvos, this time of reflection must pivot into action. Our Red Shield Appeal is still aiming to raise $41 million by June 30, and we are not there yet.

What this reflection does provide us with, though, is a sense of hope for the future.

The hope that we will reach our goal and, more impor-

tantly, be able to continue our vital services right across the nation.

In fact, through supporting the Salvos this year, you can literally BE the hope that others desperately need. It is the sort of hope which says to someone doing it tough, “It will be okay, we are here for you, and we will help you at your point of need.”

This is the hope that the Salvos provide to someone every 17 seconds in Australia.

This is what you can be a part of through the Red Shield Appeal.

In fact, our recent research illustrates exactly what these people are going through.

Those coming to us for help are skipping meals daily, using public spaces to shower and eating out of rubbish bins – all because of the cost of living and how tough it is financially for so many people.

So, while we say the biggest thank you to all Australians who have given so far, we also say to those who may still be considering supporting the Red Shield Appeal to please do so. Please be the hope for someone doing it tough.

Council is calling on people to ‘know before they go’ by checking signage, Council’s website and live mapping before heading out with their dog.

Manager of Regulatory Response Services Shanagh Jacobs said Council was making it easier for the community to understand the changes before heading out.

“Clear signage is being installed across beaches, parks and reserves and our online map makes it easy to check the rules for your local area before you leave home,” Ms Jacobs said.

“You can access maps through our website, so you know what to expect when you arrive.”

There has been criticism of the approach from Council with local dog walkers stating that the interactive mapping is not easy to understand, and that Council has not done enough to educate the community.

Bree Logie from the ‘Stumers Creek Off-Leash Dog Beach’ action group reinforced these sentiments.

“We are hoping that by July 3, the signs will be up around the area and people will be able to see these,” Bree said.

“At the moment though people are not educated, and many are only just now trying to understand what is happening. It would have been helpful if residents had received information with their dog registration for example.”

Bree stated that as a whole the interactive maps online

were not easy to understand.

“We know what is happening at Stumers such as dogs must be on a lead in the carpark and only let off once they are 10 meters onto the beach but in many other areas its ambiguous and if Council wants people to know before they go then Council should be making it easy for dog owners to find this information out.”

The local action group is also hoping to further work with Council and to promote responsible dog ownership.

“We are hearing that many dog owners are now becoming very wary of Council especially with dog registrations going up by 110% and the fines for doing the wrong thing, even if unintentional are over $800. All of this is causing a lot of angst for dog

owners, but despite this we are hoping that we can build a good relationship with Council and local laws officers so that we can all be with our dogs in off-leash areas responsibly and not get huge fines.”

WHAT ARE THE NEW RULES? From July 3, the new local laws will introduce: • Adjusted dog off leash areas at locations including Stumers Beach, Shelly Beach, Currimundi Lake, Ballinger Beach, Alexandra Headland Beach, Kings Beach and Coolum Beach.

• Seasonal dog restrictions at Maroochy North Shore (Twin Waters) between October and April to protect threatened migratory shore-

birds, with an additional off-leash area provided at Mudjimba South to offset the seasonal closure.

• Dogs will no longer be allowed at rocky foreshores including Point Perry, Point Arkwright, Point Cartwright, Moffat Headland and Caloundra Headland.

• Dogs will not be allowed on active sports playing surfaces to protect the health of players, but will be permitted on-leash in surrounding common areas and viewing spaces.

• In many environment reserves, dogs will still be welcome on-leash. However, dogs will not be allowed in selected conservation, nature and bushland reserves with very high conservation values to protect plants and wildlife.

These measures seek to

plan for a growing dog population, with projections of over 80,000 by 2046.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Signage is being updated in stages across the region. At locations where dog access is changing, updated signs will be installed from July 3 and rolled out progressively over the following weeks.

Whale Migration S tart s

The ‘sand man’ who is also known as ‘Rakey Master’ was having a “whale of a time” on the morning of June 9 on Coolum Beach in preparation for the start of the whale migration season.

The ‘Humpback Highway’ is officially open from late May through until November and around 30,000 whales will make their way north from Antarctica to breed and give birth in warmer waters before returning back to the cool of the Antarctic region.

Last year we brought you quite a few stories on the plight of whales, and other marine life becoming entangled in our shark nets and these nets still remain.

The Queensland Government maintains mesh nets and traditional drumlines year-round under the Shark Control Management Plan.

Whales are often seen from the many coastal vantages along our coast from now, especially on calm days when their activity is easily spotted.

NOOSA ELECTORATE CELEBRATES QUEENSLAND DAY WITH AWARDS NOOSA celebrated Queensland Day on Saturday June 6 by honouring 61 community members at a special commemorative event at ‘The J’ in Noosa Junction.

More than 130 community members came together for the event which was hosted by the Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton MP. The annual Noosa Electorate Queensland Day Awards recognise local volunteers who give their time, skills and expertise to support others and strengthen the community.

Representing a broad range of organisations and causes across the electorate, this year’s recipients included vol-

unteers from sporting clubs, environmental groups, community support organisations, cultural and heritage groups, animal welfare organisations and many others.

Entertainment was plentiful with a fantastic performance from the St Teresa’s Catholic College Stage Band before former Mayor Bob Abbott and local school captain Amelia Nevett took to the stage as Masters of Ceremonies, sharing the stories and achievements of this year’s recipients.

Ms Bolton thanked recipients, their families and the many organisations that nominated volunteers this year for helping make the awards such

a special occasion.

“These awards are always one of the highlights of the year because they provide an opportunity to recognise the incredible people who quietly give so much of themselves for others,” Ms Bolton said.

“This year’s recipients alone have collectively contributed 679 years of volunteer service to our community, which is an extraordinary achievement and one that deserves to be celebrated.”

The Noosa MP said the awards were a reminder of the important role volunteers play in strengthening communities across Queensland.

The recently released

State of Volunteering in Queensland Report found volunteering contributes an estimated $117 billion in social and economic value across Queensland each year.

“Volunteers are the heart of our community. While reports can measure the economic value of volunteering, the real impact is seen in the lives improved, the communities strengthened and the countless hours people give simply because they care about others,” Ms Bolton said.

“There are so many deserving volunteers in our community, so please, if you know someone who donates their time and expertise for the good of our community,

make sure to nominate them next year!”

In 1986, Clint and Robert Ranson purchased a small pharmacy in Noosa Heads, guided by a clear and simple philosophy. From the outset, their vision was to build a workplace where people enjoyed coming to work and customers felt comfortable seeking medical and health advice.

AS THE winter school holidays approach many may be looking to take a road trip and new research from LifeFlight Lotteries reveals the Sunshine State’s most searched driving routes, with coastal escapes and outback adventures topping the list.

And the research shows that heading north to the warner parts of the state are the most sought out journeys.

The Great Barrier Reef Drive is Queensland’s favourite road trip, attracting 2,900 monthly Google searches, more than four times the search volume of second-placed Capricorn Way (720 searches).

Travellers are searching for routes ranging from the 20.3-kilometre Highest Road in Queensland to the 5,282-kilometre Savannah Way. LifeFlight want to ensure that everyone is safe when tackling a road trip and the emergency service operator stated that the first minutes after an emergency matter, knowing how to call Triple Zero (000), give your exact location, carry basic first-aid supplies, and support someone until help arrives can make a real difference.

With Queensland offering everything from tropical coastlines and ancient rainforests to vast outback landscapes, travellers have no shortage of routes to choose from.

2. Capricorn Way Securing second place in the ranking, Capricorn Way attracts an average of 720 Google searches each month from travellers eager to explore Queensland’s heartland. Stretching 583 kilometres between The Caves and Barcaldine, the route takes approximately six hours and 40 minutes to complete and features 18 restaurants and 13 petrol stations along the way. Capricorn Way offers a classic Queensland road trip experience beyond the state’s well-known coastline.

Must See: Capricorn Caves, Blackdown Tableland National Park, Emerald, Sapphire Gemfields, Lake Maraboon and the Tree of Knowledge in Barcaldine.

3. Black Mountain Road Taking third place, Black Mountain Road attracts around 480 monthly Google searches despite being one of the shortest drives in the ranking.

Covering just 43 kilometres between Kuranda and Julatten, the route can be completed in around two hours and features 24 restaurants and six petrol stations. Its popularity is driven by spectacular rainforest scenery, winding mountain roads and easy access to some

of Tropical North Queensland’s most celebrated natural attractions.

Must See: Kuranda Village, Barron Falls, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Black Mountain National Park, Mount Molloy and Julatten.

4. Highest Road in Queensland Ranking fourth overall, the Highest Road in Queensland generates an average of 390 Google searches every month.

Although the route spans only 20.3 kilometres between Herberton and Ravenshoe, it offers a unique journey through Queensland’s highest sealed road and can be explored in around two hours. Along the way, travellers will find six restaurants and two petrol stations, as well as sweeping views across the Atherton Tablelands.

Must See: Herberton Historic Village, Millstream Falls, Windy Hill Wind Farm, Ravenshoe and Tully Falls National Park.

5. Matilda Way Earning fifth place in the rankings, Matilda Way attracts approximately 170 monthly Google searches from travellers seeking an authentic outback adventure. Stretching 1,808 kilometres from Barrigun to Karumba, the route requires almost 21 hours of driving and is supported by 29 restaurants and 20 petrol stations.

Many home buyers I speak with are still being drawn to the relaxed coastal lifestyle, proximity to beaches, and strong sense of community that these areas offer.

Under the proposed reforms, existing investment properties purchased before the announced cut-off date are expected to retain their current negative gearing benefits, while future investors purchasing established

residential homes may face different tax treatment. Newly built homes are expected to remain exempt from the proposed changes.

At this stage, there is still uncertainty around exactly how the reforms may evolve and what long term effect they could have on regional markets like the Sunshine Coast.

However, property markets are shaped by many factors beyond government policy alone. Interest rates, housing availability, population growth, rental demand, affordability, and consumer confidence all continue to play an important role in local market conditions.

Across many Sunshine Coast suburbs, buyer enquiry and demand for quality homes remains relatively steady, particularly for well-presented properties in desirable coastal locations.

As always, anyone considering buying, selling, or investing should seek professional financial and legal advice before making major property decisions during periods of policy change.

Lions and Norrie Job Park work continues, and the park will have a completed pathway, upgraded fitness station, relocated amenities block, additional shelter and landscaping as well as building the much-anticipated Pump Track.

Many of these features were, however, merely dreams. The highway and the airport were not opened until August 1961, the “natural water supply” was only the rain which could be caught in individual rainwater tanks, as

there was no piped water, and the “township shopping facilities” comprised two small shops and a post office.

The promise of “no drainage problems” was not solved until a few years ago, when open drains outside homes were finally closed in.

Despite these drawbacks, however, those Coolum residents who have homes in ‘on Centenary Heights’, sixtyseven years later, will look back wistfully at the original prices of land in the area, compared to today’s costs.

A MARCOOLA RESIDENT WHO IS ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

NATURAL HISTORY ONE can look to the recent milestone 120th Anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Show at Nambour as a celebration of our European settlement here on the Sunshine Coast.

However, it is really very recent in the scheme of things, but it plays an important role in communicating our natural history and culture.

Natural history can be described as the study and observation of organisms and their environments, encompassing both scientific research and broader cultural understanding. An early European study of natural history can be attributed to Pliny the Elder in Roman times in his 77 AD books.

Clearly, the traditional owner’s occupation of Australia and dream time stories go back 60,000 years - indicating they did plenty of observation and study incorporating in their culture. The stories are importantly communicated from generation to generation in their oral cultural traditions.

It was heartwarming to see the art works of our young people at the Sunshine Coast Show including a wonderful painting of an owl that won my vote for the People’s Choice Award. There were

so many great art works of animals, birds and the natural environment that showed the love of natural history.

The Show also had wildlife rangers encouraging all ages to get up close and personal with a live owl and a beautiful yellow python which could be draped around willing young children’s necks with no fear and exceptional curiosity.

Organisations like Coolum and North Shore Coast Care and the Sunshine Coast Council support natural history by encouraging engagement with ancient species like loggerhead and green turtles.

Similarly, the Bunya Bunya Corporation has continued on the Bunya Dreaming Festival.

While it is wonderful to see natural history explained by an Ernie Dingo or a David Attenborough in a digital medium, getting up close and personal in the bush or on the beach with nature should be the preferred way to observe and appreciate nature. This does not prevent us from celebrating the natural world with simple creative art displaying the images in our homes.

Thank you to all the wonderful nature-based artists and those active in nature conservation in the field as our civilisation needs you both.

COOLUM STATE HIGH SCHOOL

AS FIRST semester draws to a close at Coolum State High School, we are able to reflect on a period of great achievement at our school.

The year started with record enrolments of 1,650 students, including 325 year 7s. All students quickly settled in for a busy year.

Achievements began to roll in as the school year kicked into gear. The flagship ‘Wind Symphony’ received a platinum award at Fanfare and made the regional finals, representing a wonderful achievement for such a hardworking group of students.

The rapidly emerging ‘Strings Orchestra’ also received platinum at Fanfare, with their conductor Tara Anderson receiving a special award as recognition of her excellent work with our students.

Coolum High’s rock bands are scaling the highest of heights, including reaching the final stages of the TripleJ Unearthed High competition.

Our Netball students were recently awarded as the champion school on the Sunshine Coast, with more players in more teams achieving more highly than any other school on the coast.

The Coolum High Robotics Team recently received 2nd, 3rd and 4th places at the RoboCup Brisbane North Sumo Robotics Competition.

In sport, we have had more students achieve regional representation than at the same time in any other year across a wide range of sports including cross country, swimming,

basketball and AFL to name just a few. Make no mistake, Coolum High’s students are hard working and well-prepared athletes who fare well at whatever contest they take on.

A number of Coolum High’s extremely talented dance students have received entry into the state’s most prestigious dance academies.

Individually, there has been a great deal of success, with an example being Coen who will soon be attending the Queensland State Budget Experience at Queensland Parliament House in Brisbane.

In rugby league our students are achieving great things with Pearl now training with the Sunshine Coast Falcons’ women’s team. In AFL, a number of students are working towards the AFL draft and our teams dominating competition. In basketball our students keep improving and are now competing at the state’s highest levels.

These achievements are just the tip of the iceberg.

Academically, our students are very strong with projections showing that we will once again be in the highest echelon of Queensland high schools when year 12 academic scores are released at the end of the year. Coolum State High School really is a wonderful place of achievement at the year’s halfway point, with things set to get even better in the year’s ‘second half’!

STOPPING ELDER ABUSE THE worst thing about the rise of elder abuse in society is that, more often than not, it’s committed by the very people older Australians trust the most — their own loved ones.

As people move into the later stages of life, they can become more vulnerable to pressure, manipulation and both financial and emotional exploitation. With the Baby Boomer generation, on average, far wealthier than the generations coming after them, you can see why the temptation is there. Cost-ofliving is climbing, property prices are out of reach, and mortgage stress is everywhere. Accessing mum and dad’s assets can seem like an easy solution for adult children appointed as Enduring Power of Attorney - especially if they think no one will ever find out!

One of the simplest safeguards against elder abuse is appointing more than one child as the financial Enduring Power of Attorney. When siblings have a joint decisionmaking power they are far more likely to keep each other honest. Even a ‘several’ appointment of two or more attorneys means any moneys which go missing will eventually be noticed by the others.

Appointing a different person again as executor of

your will adds another layer of oversight, and frequently we see beneficiaries foregoing a part of their entitlement to make good ‘loans’ taken before death. Elder abuse is mostly about temptation, and temptation reduces significantly as the chances of getting caught increase!

Elder abuse isn’t always about stealing money. We sometimes meet will makers who have been coached into asking for a particular amendment “to make things fair,” even when the change clearly doesn’t do that. It’s also common to see assets quietly transferred before death to the child who has taken on the carer role. That child will often justify it as an “early inheritance,” but still expect their full share of what’s left in the estate.

Many of the behaviours described are illegal, and there are ways to hold abusers accountable. An attorney can be removed and replaced.

The Public Guardian or the police can prosecute serious misconduct.

But perhaps the most satisfying remedy for honest family members is the ability to apply to QCAT or the Court for orders requiring an attorney to compensate the older person — or their estate — for any loss caused by breaching their duties under the Act.

Coolum High Class of 2026 Midwinter Ball DRESSED TO IMPRESS

The annual Coolum State High School Midwinter Ball was held on Thursday evening June 4 and the students came together in their best dressed formal wear and had a night to remember with memories made that will last a lifetime.

The weather was crisp, but the fashion and energy were both stylish and electric as students arrived at the school grounds in the afternoon and were treated to a VIP entrance complete with red carpet and friends and family in attendance.

Students were then bussed down to the Maroochy RSL for a formal dinner and night of dancing.

Principal Troy Ascott said it was once again a “highlight of our year.”

“Our students looked amazing, and the occasion was made even more special by the incredible support shown by our community,” Mr Ascott said.

“Seeing so many people gather to watch the students arrive created a wonderful atmosphere and reflected the pride our whole community has in our students and their achievements. It was a huge milestone for our students and one that they are unlikely to ever forget.”

Wearable Art Festival launches showcase with St Andrew’s Students

THE AUSTRALIAN Wearable Art Festival (AWAF) is a bold event and is a platform for artists and designers to embrace unique and exciting mediums whereby they create daring and vivid designs often from an eclectic mix of often unusual materials.

Now in its sixth year the festival will take place from July 11 at the Novotel Resort at Twin Waters and this year local St Andrew’s students will be involved and from next year there will be a dedicated student competition.

Presented in partnership with St Andrew’s Anglican College at Peregian Springs, the inaugural Student Showcase will invite secondary year nine to year 12 students from across Australia to create and exhibit wearable artworks as part of a dedicated student show within the

AWAF program.

The national Student Showcase is designed to inspire and support a new generation of Australian wearable artists, designers and creative thinkers.

The announcement marks a significant expansion of AWAF’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and strengthening pathways into the creative industries.

AWAF Co-Director Helen Perry said the Student Showcase had been part of the Festival’s long-term vision for several years.

“One of the things we hear time and again from our artists is that wearable art changed the way they think about creativity. It encourages experimentation, problem-solving, sustainability, storytelling and innovation

- all the skills we want young people developing,” Ms Perry said.

“With the Festival continuing to grow nationally, it feels like the right time to create a dedicated platform where secondary students can be part of that creative ecosystem and showcase their work alongside one of Australia’s most exciting regional arts events.”

The Student Showcase will create opportunities for young creatives to connect with professional artists, designers and industry mentors while experiencing a nationally recognised event environment.

The initiative follows the first year of St Andrew’s Anglican College’s involvement in AWAF, where students have worked alongside acclaimed wearable artist Kym Cunningham to create a se-

ries of sculptural headpieces that will form part of this year’s Festival’s interactive audience activations.

St Andrew’s Anglican College Principal Karen Gorrie said the partnership strongly aligned with the College’s commitment to providing authentic learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

“St Andrew’s is incredibly proud to partner with the Australian Wearable Art Festival to launch the inaugural Student Showcase as part of the 2027 Festival,” Ms Gorrie said.

“As a College, we are deeply committed to providing opportunities beyond the classroom that complement learning and support students to explore their passions, build personal capacity and move confidently into their futures.

“Partnerships such as this allow students to engage with creativity, innovation and personal expression in authentic, real-world environments.

“We are also proud to support a nationally-recognised Sunshine Coast event that contributes so strongly to the arts and creative culture of our region.”

The partnership also reflects St Andrew’s ongoing investment in arts education, including the construction of its new Music and Performing Arts Hub, due for completion in late 2026.

Ms Perry said the Student Showcase would play an important role in expanding access to wearable art while also introducing a new generation of participants and audiences to the Festival.

“Wearable art sits at the

intersection of fashion, sculpture, sustainability, performance and design. It is one of the most accessible and exciting ways for young people to engage with creativity because there are very few rules,” Ms Perry said.

“We are incredibly excited about what students across Australia will create when given the opportunity.”

Details regarding entry criteria, categories and key dates for the 2027 Student Showcase will be released following the 2026 Australian Wearable Art Festival.
