A NEW retail development with provisions for a Hungry Jacks with a drive-thru has been proposed for the parcel of land next to the existing Woolworths site in Coolum.

Division 8 Councillor Taylor Bunnag stated that Council had received a development application (DA) for 11 South Coolum Road, Coolum Beach.

The DA is for an integrated shopping centre comprising three detached buildings and accommodating a total of four tenancies, which are intended to deliver retail shops and a single food and drink outlet.

The group has a purpose-built studio on Tradewinds Avenue in Coolum and is surrounded by lush gardens which has enabled the members of all ages and from all walks of life across the years to flourish. To celebrate their half century the group is inviting the community to join them to celebrate and to come along to their Birthday Celebration on Saturday May 30 from 5pm at 14 Tradewinds Avenue, Coolum. FOR 50 YEARS, Clayden Potters & Associated Crafts Inc has quietly built a creative community in the heart of Coolum, bringing together people of all ages through a shared love of pottery, art and friendship.

Now the long-running group is inviting the community to celebrate with them as they mark their 50th birthday with an exhibition and celebration on Saturday May 30 from 5pm at their studio at 14 Tradewinds Avenue, Coolum.

The free event will feature works from both past and present members, along with stories recounting the his-

tory of the artistic group and there will also be celebratory drinks and nibbles.

Tucked away among lush gardens, the Clayden studio has become a sanctuary for creativity and connection over the decades, with members describing it as much more than simply a pottery club.

Long-standing member Sharon said the welcoming atmosphere was what kept people coming back.

“It’s always been a fun place, and everybody is happy here,” Sharon said.

“Whatever problems people have in their life; they come here and can just relax and do their thing and it’s also been a

very social outlet.

“We have morning tea, and everyone sits around and chats. That social connection, no matter what age you are, people just love it.”

Former president Gretta said one of the group’s strengths had always been its inclusiveness.

“If you come here and don’t know the first thing about pottery, somebody will always be happy to show you and point you in the right direction.

“Nobody goes away feeling like they can’t be artistic.”

The purpose-built studio sits on Sunshine Coast Council land under a long-term

lease arrangement, with generations of members helping to maintain and improve the facility through fundraising, grants and volunteer work.

From pathways and gardens to studio extensions, many hands have contributed to the site over the years.

Current president Nicole, who joined just four years ago after attending a workshop, said Clayden’s sense of community was unlike anything else.

“I just loved it and joined straight away,” Nicole said.

“It’s really nice getting different age groups together.

You can be sitting there chatting with someone in their 90s while learning something

new.”

Many members shared that it is this desire to share knowledge which kept people coming back and remaining members.

“We have beginners who have never touched clay before and everyone’s happy to help,” Nicole said.

“It’s all been passed down through the generations and we are really looking forward

to sharing this birthday with the community.”

Following the birthday celebration, Clayden members will be featured in the ‘Galley Lane’ space which is located at the bottom of the stairs near the Frank St carpark in Coolum.

“The business is intended to operate on a 24/7 basis with a drive-thru.

“As this is an ‘impact assessable’ development application, the proponent will be required to notify a period in the future when residents can make submissions.”

In documents submitted to Council on behalf of the developer, the ‘Economic Need and Impact Assessment’ report states that “SCR Pty Ltd (the applicant) proposes to develop a 236.5m2 drive-through Food and Drink Outlet and other retail (~1,226m2), plus 370m2 of non-retail uses on a mezzanine at 11 South Coolum Road, Coolum Beach. The subject site is zoned Local Centre.”

The report cites a growing population as one of the main drivers for the proposed development.

“The subject development will seek to address the current need and anticipated demand growth for additional food and drink retail in the MTA (main trade area). Overall, the proposed development would improve the range of services available to the community without any adverse economic impacts.

“It is concluded that there is a strong need for the proposed development at the subject site.”

When news of the DA was posted on the Advertiser

Facebook, commentary was mixed with many citing that traffic congestion was already a major issue in that area and that any development of this size would exacerbate the problem.

A Traffic Impact Assessment Report which has also been uploaded as part of the DA addresses these points with detailed analysis and projections.

“The analysis undertaken by the project team has confirmed that the development would have minor impact only on the adjacent road network… The analysis has considered the impacts on the development on the statecontrolled road network and in particular the intersection of Yandina Coolum Road / South Coolum Road. While this analysis showed the net delay impacts are in the order

of 10% we do not believe that there are any immediately warranted upgrades that would be effective and within a reasonable cost, noting that the intersection was subject to a recent significant upgrade by the State.

“On the basis of the analysis undertaken by the project team we believe that development is appropriate and acceptable from a traffic perspective.”

As previously stated, the DA is impact assessable and will be subject to a period of public consultation where submissions from locals can be submitted.

Vinnies Winter Appeal 2026 launches AS WINTER approaches, the St Vincent de Paul Society is calling on Australians to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal 2026, with new data showing the increased depth of financial pressure now facing households that were already struggling to get by.

A new YouGov survey commissioned by St Vincent de Paul Society found more than half of Australians (55%) say they have had to reduce spending on essentials such as medication, groceries and bills just to keep a roof over their heads.

The Society’s National

President Mark Gaetani said the findings show just how many people are entering winter with little to fall back on.

“Winter is one of the toughest times of year for those households the Society supports, but these figures show financial insecurity is now hitting many Australians harder than ever,” Mr Gaetani said.

“For households with little or no savings buffer, it only takes one setback, like an illness, accident or job loss, to go from just getting by to going under.”

“With global uncertainty, households will continue to experience economic pressures in the months ahead.

Your donations help us plan and respond to these demands, which are unlikely to ease any time soon,” Mr Gaetani said.

ECONOMIES OF SCALE Dear editor, Australia, like other nations, is facing challenges amid global uncertainty because of the US president’s illegal war with Iran, which has affected many lives, oil supplies, and the international economy.

Geopolitical tensions could disrupt oil supply chains for many months making the future uncertain.

While the latest 4.5% inflation rate is unwelcome, it is far from simply being “homegrown”.

The Albanese government has reduced the inherited six percent inflation rate left by the Morrison Coalition while avoiding higher unemployment.

The IMF has judged the Albanese Labor Government’s budget management to be one of the three strongest in the G20. Australia has now risen in the global rankings, up from 14th under the Coalition.

Also, Australia has a lower gross debt-to-GDP than any major advanced economy.

Australia is now positioned ahead of advanced economies like Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The IMF reports that “The Commonwealth has built a strong fiscal position that can help buffer future fiscal headwinds.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says “…This Budget will be focused on fuel security and supply chain resilience, ad-

dressing inflation, boosting productivity and managing global economic uncertainty.

It will be a responsible Budget which balances the pressures in the here and now with our intergenerational obligations…”

A budget with emphasis on fuel security and supply chain resilience will boost domestic production, reduce oil dependence, and support a shift toward clean energy. This will help us better manage future global disruptions.

Thank goodness we have a responsible financial team in charge focussed on what is best for the nation and not on themselves.

WHAT IS LOVE? Dear editor, In this hard world, it’s getting harder to love. Yet love remains the one thing we still long for, even after we’ve stopped pretending it’s simple.

In classic literary romance, love rises like a tide - as when Jane Austen wrote, “You have bewitched me, body and soul.” But real life is far less tidy and far more demanding.

Enduring love has never been a polished arrangement between perfect people. It is a lifelong duet between flawed souls who keep choosing each other, even on the days when choosing is hard and life is harder.

Think about how we fall in love. After thousands of

years, you’d imagine we’d have perfected the process.

Instead, we still tumble in like toddlers chasing bubbles - arms outstretched, and hearts wide open, no thought of a hard landing.

Leonard Cohen understood this when he sang, “I know there is no cure for love.”

Humans - for all our charms - are emotional typos.

We trip over our own feelings. We misread each other’s intentions. We fall in love with someone’s laugh, then spend years trying to change their habits. We promise patience, then lose it in the Woolies car park.

But love - real love - is the gentle, daily decision to forgive. It is the courage to stay soft in a world that rewards armour.

Good friends of mine in their eighties say, “It is knowing, truly knowing, we are always there for each other, reliably in each other’s corner, no matter what.”

Finding our forever isn’t about perfection. It’s about finding someone whose errors harmonise with ours, someone who still reaches for our hand in the dark without searching.

In the end, love is the most human thing we do. And no matter how dark the world becomes, we must persist - by reaching out to each other.

OZ VALUES Dear editor, Our annual Anzac Day ceremonies evoke emotions in all Australians, whether born here or immigrated. Thousands of foreigners come to Australia to start new lives unique to anything overseas.

Our lifestyle allows personal freedoms and opportunities for all. We are the envy of the world.

Those who believe Australia is the “Lucky Country”, must be prepared to align with its values and respect its freedoms. By honouring our flag and systems of government, we realise living here has no comparison anywhere overseas. But restrictions on immigration numbers must be a reality, when Australians are suffering from world events outside their control.

We cannot home the countless thousands allowed to come here, without ensuring they do not just crowd our major cities, creating more homelessness.

We do not need to bring world conflicts into our homeland.

Our anthem; “We are one, but we are many”, must be pledged. Disrespect openly displayed at our sacred Anzac ceremonies on Anzac Day by “hecklers’’ needs a history lesson. Hecklers need to be reminded that lack of respect for those who served and sacrificed their lives, despite their ethnicity, gave us all the freedom and lifestyle

we enjoy and tolerate today. It was bought with a price.

Such is not common in many nations, where democratic life is denied; in autocratic nations run by self-serving dictators. Our laws need to address and consequently deport those who disrespect by open conflict, creating disharmony and tension. “Advance Australia Fair”: You are a guiding light a dark world.

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY Dear editor, The current government’s obsession with the ‘intergenerational equity’ buzzword serves as little more than political cover for a cycle of failed market interventions.

Time and again, the use of short-term policy ‘levers’— such as first-home buyer grants and government deposit schemes—has proven that these quick fixes will fix nothing, instead serving only

to inflate property prices and keep housing perpetually out of reach.

True housing reform cannot be achieved within the confines of a three-year election cycle through rhetoric that promises immediate results.

The government needs to stop counting how many homes it has built and instead produce long-term, structural plans for the future that will actually work.

Genuine affordability demands a transition to a ‘future-vision’ model that prioritises the delivery of foundational infrastructure.

By investing in high-speed transport links that connect regions like the Lockyer Valley, the Moreton Bay region, and the Western Downs to core employment hubs, we can decentralise our housing supply and create sustainable growth that addresses the root cause of the crisis, rather than perpetuating the failed, interventionist policies of the past.

Event Showcase COOL HARMONIES Coolum choir singing for Urban Angels

COOL HARMONIES community choir will open its rehearsal doors once again on 4 June and welcome the public to enjoy some beautiful harmonies and fabulous food while raising funds for Urban Angels, a local not-for-profit organisation.

Urban Angels create up to 15,000 meals a month for those in need and deliver them door to door as far north as Gympie and as far south as

Caboolture.

Unit Manager Birgit Sowden said Urban Angels supported people who, for various reasons, struggled to access healthy food.

“Experience tells us that what we do leads to recipients of our meals gaining a sense of belonging to our community.

“It’s also clear to us that filling someone’s freezer when they are in crisis is like releasing a pressure valve for them, our gift of a meal gives people the time and head space to move toward

Yoga practitioners and many leaders today are using mindfulness techniques being in the moment and selfaware. Mindfulness enhances leadership by improving selfawareness, emotional intelligence, and decision-making abilities. It encourages leaders to lead with intention, empathy, and awareness, shifting from authoritative styles to a more conscious approach.

By nourishing ourselves with compassion, kindness and forgiveness and letting go of our judgements we can foster happiness, health, and harmony. We can break down fear and release what is under the surface like the unseen roots of a lotus flower under the water in a pond.

Author David Michie tells us “Why Mindfulness is better than Chocolate” with a guide to inner peace and happiness.

We need to feel good about ourselves to participate fully in

solutions to their problems,” Brigit said.

“Our volunteers take the time to listen, care and connect, alongside providing a nourishing meal which is often a powerful turning point for those we support.”

Choir leader Yvonne Corstorphin said it was a joy to share songs with members of the public while helping to raise funds for Urban Angels’ running costs.

“Urban Angels do not receive any government funding for their meal delivery program and instead rely solely on private donations.”

Ms Corstorphin said longterm volunteer Gayle Hogan

from Urban Angels would join Cool Harmonies for the morning to talk about the valuable work they do in the community, with choir members singing a wide range of uplifting songs from gospel to African.

“We’ll also include a singalong for the audience to join in with as well as inviting everyone to share in some delicious food to round out a beautiful morning, which is usually a sell-out,” Ms Corstorphin said.

Witness the fitness with pump track set for Coolum

COOLUM will soon be home to a new sports facility with a pump track set to take shape within the Lions and Norrie Job Park which is located adjacent to the northern end of the Coolum Caravan Park.

As part of Sunshine Coast Council upgrades for the park, Council has engaged a specialist contractor to finalise the design for the specialist track which is jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government.

A pump track is a fun, looping track made up of smooth bumps, rollers and turns and instead of pedalling, riders use an up and down body motion to build and maintain speed, known as “pumping”.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez said the community’s enthusiasm had helped shape the park, which should be

completed and open for the community by the end of September 2026.

“Our community told us loud and clear that they wanted a pump track that delivered excitement, challenge and fun, and it’s great to see construction now about to begin,” Cr Suarez said.

“By engaging a specialist contractor, we’re ensuring this track will be built to a high standard and will reflect the ideas and aspirations local riders shared with us.”

Pump tracks are designed for everyone with bikes, scooters and skateboards all welcome.

Riders of different ages and skill levels can use the same track at the same time, which makes them great places for families, friends and the wider community to come together and be active.

Construction of the track will begin once landscaping

works are completed, and the final track design receives approval. Park upgrades are scheduled to start on this May and expected to be finished by late September 2026.

Other improvements will include an additional BBQ shelter, better path connections, upgraded fitness station, a shade sail and spaces that will link the pump track to the rest of the park.

Community-led design Late last year, Council released a draft pump track concept plan that was met with strong support. Community feedback called for features such as taller jumps and pumps, crossover opportunities and jumpable lines, coastal-inspired coloured line markings, higher drop-ins for greater speed and tabletop jumps.

Cr Suarez said the pump track would add fresh energy to the recently upgraded park.

“This new track will complement the basketball half court and other improvements, giving young people and families another active reason to visit Coolum Beach and enjoy the park,” Cr Suarez said.

Sunshine Coast locals can already get a feel for how popular pump tracks are at Sugar Bag Road Town Reserve in Caloundra West and Forestwood Drive Park in Buderim, where riders of all ages enjoy the thrill of rolling, pumping and flowing around the track.

PCYC offering drop-in program at Coolum’s Tickle Park A FUN, free and inclusive drop-in session is being run

by Coolum Police in an effort to foster positive relationships between local youths and Police.

The PCYC drop-in program will run from 3 to 4.30pm each Friday in Tickle Park and so far the response has been positive with some 45

attending the first program.

People can drop in and have a chat, play games and there will be a BBQ, and drinks provided. There is no cost and registration is not required – simply drop by on the day.

Community urged to walk in for free flu vax this winter

THE PHARMACY Guild of Australia is urging Australians to protect themselves and their families by visiting their local community pharmacy for vaccination.

From March 1 of this year flu vaccinations are free for all Queenslanders aged six months and over. You don’t need a Medicare card – simply visit your local pharmacy for a free vaccination.

Red Bench in Coolum unveiled in an effort to end DV IN RECOGNITION of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the Coolum community now has a ‘red bench’ in Tickle Park which will serve as a visual reminder that this often-hidden issue needs to be acknowledged and spoken about.

The ‘Red Bench Project’ is an initiative of the Red Rose Foundation which aims to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and to keep communication around the topic open and flowing.

The Coolum bench was unveiled recently to a crowd of those involved in the project as well as special guests and representatives from local schools.

Red Benches are project managed by local community groups and stakeholders with

the Tickle Park bench a joint initiative between Coolum Men’s Shed, Coolum Police and local government.

The project has been in the works for almost a year with the bench crafted by volunteers at the Coolum Men’s Shed.

Coolum Men’s Shed President Charles Thomson said the Men’s Shed being involved in the project has sparked important conversations among its members about preventing domestic and family violence.

“We are proud to not only have built a physical symbol that domestic violence won’t be tolerated, but to contribute to the foundation that reaches out those impacted in the community.”

Acting Officer in Charge of Coolum Police Station Se-

nior Sergeant Joel Bryant said police play a critical role in responding to domestic and family violence, with new DV safe spaces recently unveiled at both Coolum and Noosa stations.

“These purpose-built spaces are aimed at ensuring victims, survivors and vulnerable persons feel safe, supported and heard,” Snr Sgt Bryant said.

“They are set apart from the operational areas of the station and include features for children, like toys and activities, along with IT access so victim-survivors can safely go online and connect with support services.”

The launch of the new bench in Tickle Park coincides with the start of Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention

Month, with this year’s theme of “Together Queenslanders can prevent domestic and family violence.”

The unveiling also saw $500 donated to the Red Rose Foundation.

Red Rose Foundation CEO Lucy Lord said the bench creates a space where victimsurvivors feel seen, heard and supported, and community members are encouraged to reflect on their role in the collective response to domestic and family violence.

“Importantly, today’s launch also opens new opportunities for meaningful conversations between community leaders, organisations supporting victim survivors, and local service groups about what more can be done locally to strengthen prevention and early intervention

efforts,” Ms Lord said.

Sunshine Coast Division 8 Councillor Taylor Bunnag thanked the community and government stakeholders for their contributions to the project.

“It demonstrates a strong community response to the prevention of domestic and family violence,” Cr Bunnag said.

“Continuing to raise awareness and have open discussions about domestic and family violence through projects such as this Red Bench is incredibly important.”

Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie further highlighted the importance of the project.

“Each red bench carries a simple but powerful message - let’s change the ending.

“This year’s theme is, ‘Every Life Matters’, re-

minding us that every story matters, and every action counts.”

Restoring safety where you live

The new Queensland Government is Making Queensland Safer with more police and stronger laws combined with early intervention and rehabilitation programs for at-risk youth.

A

lready delivering a 7.2 per cent reduction in victim numbers* and with serious repeat offenders down 17 per cent**, the Government is breaking the cycle of crime. But there’s more to be done.

Under Adult Crime, Adult Time almost 4700 youth offenders have been charged with more than 22,800 offences. Youth bail monitoring laws are also stronger, improving safety where you live.

More than 1600 new police are restoring safety where you live.

Bolstered police capability includes an expanded POLAIR (Police Aerial Operations) and the largest rapid response unit in Queensland’s history. The State Flying Squad is providing surge capacity straight into crime hotspots – moving fast to target and remove criminals from the street.

Crime hotspots are being targeted through locally led and centrally coordinated police operations. Operation Xray Steeler recently resulted in more than 1300 people charged with 4072 offences. Operation Forge is underway across the state delivering a highly

visible six-month crackdown on breakins, robberies and stolen cars.

Jack’s Law is keeping our streets safer, with police scanning for, detecting and removing weapons to combat knife crime.

The Government is also better protecting children by strengthening the blue card system and delivering Daniel’s Law – which provides access to vital

Officer in Charge of POLAIR Senior Sergeant Tony Lawliss said the extension of POLAIR’s aerial crime-fighting capability in Cairns and the expansion of that capability on the Sunshine Coast to include the Moreton Bay region had bolstered their ability to support on-ground crews in responding to emergencies.

“Our highly trained crews can respond to incidents faster now that they’ve been strategically positioned out of more regional bases across Queensland,” he said.

Daniel’s Law: Turning a legacy into safer communities for Queensland’s children Daniel’s Law is one of the most significant reforms to child safety legislation in Queensland’s history and is a major milestone in restoring safety where you live.

W

ith more than 290,000 visits to the Daniel’s Law website since 31 December 2025, the State’s first public sex offender register provides parents with an online tool to keep their families safe.

The online register provides eligible members of the Queensland community access to information about convicted sex offenders who are on Queensland’s Child Protection Register , helping communities stay alert and informed.

The register honours the legacy of Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe, whose abduction and murder in 2003 inspired two decades of advocac y for stronger child protection laws.

“It has been more than 20 years since Daniel was taken from us, and every single day since, we’ve fought to make sure no other family goes through what we did,” parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe shared.

“Daniel’s Law is about protecting kids, empowering parents, and shining a light on those who lurk in the dark.”

QPS Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Denzil Clark said Daniel’s Law will help families better understand local risks and take informed precautions.

“Daniel’s Law provides parents, guardians and the broader community with access to information that helps safeguard children,” he said.

Frontline policing is being rebuilt with more than 1600 new police recruits as part of the plan to make Queensland safer.

Flying Squad delivers safer streets for Queenslanders

B

uilt to quickly target and remove dangerous criminals from the streets, the State Flying Squad has clocked up more than 140 deployments to make Queensland safer since its launch in January 2025.

The largest police rapid response unit in Queensland’s history is restoring safety where you live, so far arresting 2372 offenders, including 1318 youths, on 7249 charges.

The unit has been deployed to fight crime in locations including the Far North, Townsville and Darling Downs districts.

“We enhance their ability to conduct operations by boosting their numbers on the frontlines, which increases community safety,” he said.

Senior Constable Samuel Wendt, an officer with the State Flying Squad says their work strengthens existing police activities by providing surge capacity into local crime hotspots.

“Recently, we have been regularly deployed to assist with operations that aim to reduce property crime in Northern and Far Northern Queensland, which resulted in reduced numbers of victims of crime.”

Breaking the Cycle: Early intervention to prevent reoffending and Make Queensland Safer

T

he new Queensland Government is delivering targeted early intervention programs that support at-risk young people, increase accountability and reduce reoffending.

The Regional Reset program intervenes when young people start to disengage or show signs of antisocial behaviour. It combines mentoring, outdoor challenges and cultural learning to build skills and confidence to make safer choices and avoid trouble.

When a young person leaves detention, the Staying on Track program steps in immediately with six months of intensive support to reduce the risk

of reoffending. The program connects youths with mentoring, family support and practical life skills training to build routines and stay on a positive path.

The Government is also strengthening local crime prevention by backing communityled projects through Kickstarter Grants and expanding school-based support – opening four new Crime Prevention Schools and two Youth Justice Schools.

In South East Queensland, the Isurava Program, part of the Regional Reset initiative, is helping young people turn their lives around.

Angie Debnam, CEO of the Kokoda Youth Foundation, says taking young people out of their usual environment is one of the most beneficial aspects of the program.

“When young people realise they can make a change and take ownership of their future, that’s incredibly powerful,” she said.

For youth leaving detention, the Staying on Track program, delivered

by Life Without Barriers, provides 12 months of support to reduce reoffending.

Sarah Mahony, Regional Director of Life Without Barriers, says the biggest difference is the long-term support.

“We’ve seen young people rebuild relationships with their parents, return home, and even walk away from crime,” she said.

To ensure the longevity of early intervention and youth justice programs, the Queensland Government is investing $560 million in early intervention and youth justice programs, including $225 million over five years to deliver Staying on Track.

ack’s Law is helping make Queensland safer by enabling police to use handheld metal detectors to find knives and other weapons without a warrant.

Since the laws were made permanent and expanded statewide in July last year, more than 127,000 scans have been carried out, leading to 1947 arrests and 3773 charges.

Brett and Belinda Beasley lost their 17-year-old son, Jack, in December 2019 at Surfers Paradise when he was fatally stabbed during a night out with friends.

Today, they are proud to see Jack’s legacy drive real change, with every wanding operation helping police remove weapons from the streets.

“We don’t want any other family to go through what we’ve been through,” Mr Beasley said.

Adult Crime, Adult Time expands

P

rotecting communities, reducing reoffending and holding young offenders to account underpins ongoing efforts to strengthen youth crime laws.

Recommended by the Queensland Government’s Expert Legal Panel, these laws aim to deliver tougher measures on youth crime to protect the community.

New legislation passed in State Parliament expands Adult Crime, Adult Time to include 12 additional offences, such as aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm, further bolstering efforts to make Queensland safer.

So far, almost 4700 youth offenders have been charged with more than 22,800 Adult Crime, Adult Time offences, contributing to a 7.2 per cent year on year drop in crime victims.

The decisive reforms, along with early intervention and rehabilitation programs, send a clear message that youth offenders will face serious consequences for their actions.

COOLUM State High School continues to grow – with 1650 students now calling Coolum High their school. There are many reasons why students are making this choice, with one significant one being our range of Academy programs. Each Academy has been successful in its own right, some of them spectacularly so.

The Cheerleading Academy continues to go from one win to the next, at both a state and national level. Led by the indefatigable Hayley Green, Coolum High’s cheerleaders are the most extraordinary athletes whose high-octane routines are truly exceptional.

Our Basketball Academy students are now winning consistently at the regional level in this hotly contested sport, with the academy led by ex-NBL player Will Sinclair. The skills and flair involved in basketball is something to behold and stems from training, hard work and discipline.

The Robotics Academy has experienced a wide range of success with two students recently returning from Texas having competed in the world championships, following on from last year when six students competed in Florida.

What a great opportunity for

DIVIDING FENCES IT’S BEEN over sixty years since the Dividing Fences Act 1953 (Qld) made it clear, once and for all, that property owners were entitled to have a ‘sufficient’ dividing fence between them and their neighbour, and that they were entitled to have their neighbour pay for half. The Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011 has carried on in much the same vein, but still people seem to be missing one major point – notice must be given in advance! If not, reimbursement is merely optional.

It’s certainly poor form to simply tell one’s neighbour where to shove their receipts for timber and nails, or the invoice from the local fencing guy. Most likely it will set up years of poor neighbourly relations. But in strict legal terms, if a neighbour doesn’t serve a Notice to Contribute to Fencing Work, including at least one quote, and get agreement from the neighbour as to the type, position and cost of the fence, no amount will be recoverable from the neighbour to pay for ‘their half’. The Agreement must be signed on the back page of the Notice to Contribute

within a month of receipt. In the absence of an agreement, a neighbour can take the matter to QCAT for a decision.

The act sets some broad parameters about what is a ‘sufficient dividing fence’ – 50 centimetres to 1.8 metres high, constructed of wood, metal, bricks, cement or just about anything you can build a fence from. But it’s not as simple as saying ‘a 50-centimetre chain wire fence is ‘sufficient’. I will only pay for half of that!’ The act goes on to say that QCAT must consider a range of factors when deciding sufficiency. The purposes the two blocks are being used for and the kind of dividing fence normally used in the area are chief amongst them.

An interesting development with the newer Act was the ability of neighbour’s who haven’t agreed about the fence to bring proceedings to have the fence removed or altered.

All the more reason to use the Notice to Contribute process, even if you are happy to pay for the fence yourself! Usually, people are very happy to receive one of these forms if it’s suggesting that they make a ‘contribution’ of zero dollars!

A new pump track is coming to Lions and Norrie Job Park on David Low Way. Sunshine Coast Council is finalising the design, with joint funding from Council and the Queensland Government. This fun, looping track will suit all ages and abilities. Park upgrades also include a new barbecue shelter, improved paths, an enhanced fitness station, a shade sail and better accessibility.

Construction will begin once design and landscaping are finished, with everything on track for completion by late September 2026. See Council's website for more details.

ALL ABOUT IXORAS The Ixoras that have been growing in some streets of Nambour never fail to impress. They have been strong and resilient, coping well with the harsh conditions amidst all the traffic.

The evergreen shrubs have been covered with clusters of lovely multi headed flowers and the glossy green leaves have looked healthy. Ixoras are tough and thrive in full sun, so are great for sunny situations.

Drought resistant when established, but they do require a well-drained, fairly rich, acidic soil, the pH between 5.5 to 6.5. Fertiliser should be phosphorus rich, as too much alkaline will make the leaves turn yellow.

They do well as a potted plant, and there are many colours to choose from including red, orange, apricot, pink, white, and gold. The flowers do well as a cut flower, lasting for a week or more, and can also look good in an arrangement. They enjoy regular watering but welldraining soil mix is essential.

Aphids and scale can be a problem, so a spray containing neem keeps pests under control.

The best defence against pests and diseases is to keep your plants healthy and strong. It is obvious that a poor, unhealthy plant is the first to be attacked!

The best time to prune the Ixora is directly after the flowering has finished. A good hard pruning will shape the shrub and should promote more flowers. This versatile tropical plant is often used to create a hedge. A dwarf variety has been developed and these are perfect to use around your garden or path. If you prune them hard you will be rewarded with a tight edging full of pretty flowers.

They can be grown by seed but most gardeners choose to propagate by using the cutting method. Select semi hardwood cuttings and place them in a mix of soil, peat moss and sand. Keep them slightly moist in a cool spot, then transplant the cuttings when established.

Planned burns are an essential part of managing fire adapted forests. They reduce fuel loads, support ecosystem health and improve community safety, ahead of the peak bushfire season. At that time Captain Cook was familiar with small workshops making glass in forests near his home, which had a central tall chimney surrounded by a circle of piled logs used for fuel.

Joseph Banks, who was travelling with Cook, also noted “some remarkable conical hills”, and Sydney Parkinson [a botanical draughtsman with Banks] noted that “the land appeared higher, having many remarkable peaks, one of which was like a glass house”.

We do not know whether the Captain or crew members saw Mount Coolum, but by the noon [mid-day] reading on May 17, the Endeavour was positioned off today’s Marcus Beach, having travelled the length of most of today’s Sunshine Coast. Importantly, those on the ship, although too far from shore to relate to the Gubbi Gubbi people who lived in the area, noted their presence as they sailed past. Lieutenant Cook noted that there had been ‘Several smooks seen today and some pretty far inland., Banks wrote ‘… there were many smooks especially on the northern side’ and Parkinson reported that ‘we also saw some smoke’.

Although these records are minimal, they give a record that the crew of the Endeavour and the indigenous people on the mainland both played a part in the first written history of our area!

Smook refers to the 18th century spelling of the word ‘smoke’.

CAPTAIN COOK’S SHIP? I WAS recently asked if I thought that Captain Cook might have travelled along the Sunshine Coast, and what he might have seen … and my answer was definitely “YES, and NO” Lieutenant James Cook, Captain of Endeavour sailed from Plymouth, England on August 26, 1768, via Cape Horn, Tahiti and New Zealand before heading to the unknown east coast of “New South Wales”, near today’s Bermagui, which they reached on April 21, 1770.

They then sailed north, resting for several days around the area they named Botany Bay, and then continued on northwards, past the Tweed River, and spent time in today’s Moreton Bay – which they originally spelt as “Morton Bay”.

The first written accounts of our Sunshine Coast area were noted on Thursday May 17th in 1770. As the Endeavour travelled northward, it reached a point approximately opposite today’s Caloundra Head around dawn but was some thirty kilometres offshore. However, Lieutenant Cook commented that “should anyone be desirous of doing it that may come after me this place may always be found by three hills which lay to the northward of it in the latitude of 26 degrees 53 minutes south. These hills are but a little way inland and not far from each other, they are very remarkable on account of their singular form of elevation which very much resembles glass houses which

RENEWABLE DIESEL The Crisafulli Government is strengthening Queensland’s fuel security with a $25 million investment and streamlined approvals, to develop renewable diesel at Ampol’s Lytton refinery.

The funding partnership will support the modification of Ampol’s existing plant to co-process conventional diesel, with biogenic feedstocks such as waste and plant oils and animal fats, to produce renewable fuel that can be used in any existing diesel engine.

Once complete, the project will enable the first sustainable domestic production of second-generation low carbon liquid fuels in Australia.

The investment is restoring Queensland’s ability to drill, refine and store fuel locally.

Together with progressing oil production from the Taroom Trough, unlocking more refinery capability and boosting fuel storage, the Crisafulli Government is delivering short, medium and long-term measures to lock in fuel security for Queensland.

The project will initially be capable of producing up to 20 million litres of renewable diesel a year from 2028, pro-

cessing 15-20 kilotons of feedstock per year.

Construction is expected to begin by mid-2027 and will create 46 new jobs, including 40 construction and 6 operational.

KATIE ROSE HOSPICE FOR MORE than 15 years, Katie Rose Hospice has provided compassionate palliative care to local families, made possible through community donations and volunteers. To help this muchloved facility reopen, we have been working with the Board and sadly, Dr Drew Dwyer, who had committed to come aboard, passed away on the day of a media release to this effect. As we grieve his loss, we are seeking those experienced in palliative care, hospice management and sustainable not-for-profit models to join the efforts, as well as seed funding, which is fully tax deductible, to develop this model.

With state government not responding to the growing economic pressures facing community-based hospices across Queensland, and the current Palliative Care Strategy ending in June, it is all hands-on deck as we need to retain this facility. WATERWAYS Since the announcement of the Sunshine Coast Waterways Authority (SCWA), I have consistently asked one question: how will Noosa benefit? While the committee process provided some

additional detail, it did not allay concerns including that this new authority “would decide where and under what conditions waterway activities occur” nor be able to justify the $35m price tag.

With uncertainty around where the authority’s jurisdiction begins and ends, warnings of overlapping mandates, and no mention in the Bill of environmental benchmarks, we trust these issues will be resolved prior to adoption. As well, that the current oversubscribed pool of Maritime Safety Queensland infrastructure funding be significantly increased, and ongoing shortages of officers remedied, as what is the point of another layer of decisionmakers when what we have needed for years was extra on-the-ground resources?

DIVISION 8 SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL THERE’S plenty happening across our beautiful region - here’s a snap shot of what I’ve been working on for our community.

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL This month marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and I was honoured to stand alongside our community for the March and Candlelight Vigil in Cotton Tree. It was a moving evening, with a strong turnout from across the region.

The vigil is a time to honour lives lost, acknowledge those impacted, and stand together as a community against domestic and family violence.

Seeing so many people come together in quiet solidarity was a powerful reminder that this matters to all of us.

I encourage everyone to take part in events throughout the month and support the ongoing work to prevent domestic and family violence.

FELIX PARRY PARK It’s great to see so much interest in the future of Felix Parry Park!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to view the plans and provided feedback and ideas on the refined design for Felix Parry Park. We look forward to sharing more information on the next steps soon.

BUILDING BETTER CONNECTIONS Works have started this month on a new raised pedestrian crossing along Ocean Drive at Twin Waters. The crossing will be built at the existing pedestrian refuge between Ameen Circuit and Nojoor Road. This will significantly improve safety for pedestrians, especially more vulnerable residents and those accessing nearby facilities like Estia. The works will take around three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

MOUNT COOLUM AMENITIES The countdown is on… we’re just days away from the completion of the longawaited Mount Coolum toilet facilities expected to be completed this week. Just in time for the peak hiking season, this much-needed upgrade means no more “holding on until you get home” after tackling the mountain. Relief is officially in sight.

Teddy will thrive in a home where someone is around much of the time and can provide him with patience, structure and plenty of affection. In return, he promises unwavering loyalty and companionship.

Community news COOLUM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (CRA) The Coolum Residents Association will be holding its annual general meeting of members at 5pm Thursday, 4 June in the small conference room upstairs at the Coolum Beach Surf Club. Among other things, the meeting will elect the management committee and other administrative positions. CRA is a local community organisation that aims to identify and promote sustainable opportunities to preserve and enhance amenity and facilities, and promote local artists in the Coolum Beach and surrounding areas. In addition to community art projects, CRA is also focusing on active transport and pedestrian safety and amenity. Sports News COOLUM FC APPOINTS NEW COACH

COOLUM Football Club has strengthened its men’s program with the appointment of highly regarded coach David Davkovski as Head Coach of its Football Queensland Premier League 3 (FQPL3) side.

The FQPL 3 is the premier high-level regional football competition on the Sunshine Coast with teams competing with other clubs such as Noosa Lions, Baringa and Caloundra in a structured league aimed at competition and development. Pathways can lead into the state-wide FQPL 2.

Davkovski brings close to 30 years of coaching experience, including roles as Technical Director and Academy Coach with Victoria’s Goulburn Valley Suns, where he built a reputation as a leading developer of elite junior talent.

Known for his commitment to standards, culture and long-term player growth, Mr Davkovski has helped guide players into A-League pathways and national youth setups.

The appointment comes during a period of renewed momentum at the club, highlighted by the recent signing of former Wellington Phoenix player Alex Smith.

Coolum FC said Mr Davkovski’s arrival marks a

key step forward as it continues to build both performance and pathways, with Gustavo Batista also returning to continue developing the club’s under-23s program.

“David’s track record in developing players and building strong environments made him a standout,” a club spokesperson said.

“He understands both highperformance pathways and community football, which is important for Coolum FC as one of the largest junior clubs on the Sunshine Coast” Mr Davkovski said he was excited to take on the role and help drive the club forward.

“I’m really proud to be part of a club like Coolum FC that has a strong local identity. A big focus for me is creating

opportunities for local players and giving our younger talent a genuine pathway into senior football.

“We want to build a squad that represents the community, with players who understand the badge and take pride in it. At the same time, we’ll set high standards and create an environment where those players can develop, compete, and progress to the next level.”

With new leadership and key additions across both senior and under-23 levels, Coolum will be aiming to turn that momentum into results as the FQPL3 season unfolds.

Mother’s Day Raffle

THE LITTLE kindy located in the heart of Coolum on Jones Parade has a huge Mother’s Day fundraising raffle taking place right now and they would love it if everyone could buy a ticket.

Coolum Community Kindy is a small not-for-profit, community-based kindergarten that has been part of the local community for many years. As a not-for-profit organisation, fundraising plays a major role in helping the group improve their environment and outdoor spaces for the children who attend now

and into the future.

This raffle is their major annual fundraiser, and the local community and businesses have been incredibly generous in donating prizes.

There is over $4900 worth of prizes to give away, with tickets starting from just $5. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday May 17.

The kindy is hoping to replace some of their astro turf and to do some other improvements within the grounds of their little kindergarten from the funds raised.
