THERE will be no reduction in the amount of existing off-leash access at the popular Stumers Creek dog beach after Sunshine Coast Council adopted the Sunshine Coast Dog Exercise Area Regional Plan after a vote at the December 11 Ordinary Meeting. Whilst only one part of the overall plan, the Stumers Creek dog exercise area was subject to a proactive community campaign by locals who were fiercely against changes at the popular dog beach. NEW YEAR’S Eve will literally be going off with a bang this year with free community celebrations taking place across the coast with Coolum Beach hosting fireworks at 8.30pm and for those who want to officially celebrate the new year the midnight fireworks will be returning to Mooloolaba Beach this year. Council is supporting four fireworks displays at three locations (Coolum at 8.30pm, Caloundra at 9.30pm and Mooloolaba at 8.30pm and midnight) allowing both visitors and locals alike the opportunity to make it to one of the family friendly events and to usher in the new year. The early fireworks in Caloundra and Coolum will be part of family-friendly celebrations and in Mooloolaba, the two displays will be fired

from an offshore barge and will be visible from multiple viewing points, from Maroochydore Beach to the top of Alexandra Headland to Point Cartwright. Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said she was delighted to see the midnight fireworks return to Mooloolaba. “Last year our community told us they wanted to see midnight fireworks return and we listened,” Mayor Natoli said. “The format is a little different this year, so, we’re encouraging people to think about the kind of experience they’d like to have, then plan ahead for a great night and perhaps watch the action from a new viewpoint. “If a meal at a local restaurant appeals, Mooloolaba traders are looking forward to

welcoming locals and festive season visitors. “Or for something more casual, pack a picnic, gather friends and loved ones and head out to one of the vantage points from Maroochydore Beach to Point Cartwright where you can spread out and settle in to watch the displays. “Whichever way you choose to celebrate, stay safe, plan ahead and have a wonderful New Year’s celebration.”

COOLUM Coolum Lions are adding to the fireworks excitement with a great family friendly event from 5–9pm in Tickle Park. Expect roving performers, food trucks, light entertainment and an 8.30pm fireworks display. CALOUNDRA The Food Truck Associa-

tion is bringing the fun in Caloundra. Head to Kings Beach Amphitheatre where from 4–10pm where you’ll find rides, face painting and roving entertainment and food trucks with a 9.30pm fireworks display.

MOOLOOLABA Leave the car at home and arrive via bus or with pedal power. Council’s BikePark is available at Mooloolaba Esplanade opposite Meta Street. Translink is adding increased services, so take advantage of 50c fares. The 600 and 620 services will operate every 15 minutes from 6pm to 1.30am. Mooloolaba will have busking duos, roving performers, food trucks and fireworks at 8.30pm and midnight. ALL SUNSHINE COAST NYE EVENTS ARE GLASS AND ALCOHOL FREE. POLICE have charged a man following investigations into a serious hit-and-run traffic crash in Maroochydore on the night of December 13. Around 11.55pm, police and emergency services were called to Aerodrome Road, near the intersection of Fourth Avenue, following reports a white Toyota Yaris had struck a group of eight pedestrians. The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota, a 38-year-old Maroochydore man, fled the scene in his vehicle following the crash. He was located by police at an

One of the pedestrians, a 24-year-old woman from New South Wales, sustained lifethreatening injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition. Three other pedestrians, including two 18-year-old men and a 19-year-old man, were transported Sunshine Coast University Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have since charged a 38-year-old Maroochydore man with eight counts of at-

Insurance Council urges caution as scams abound after disasters THE INSURANCE Council of Australia (ICA) is warning impacted residents to be wary of disaster chasers with the ICA stating insurers have now received more than 27,800 claims for the southeast Queensland hailstorms that impacted the region on from November 23-24. Disaster chasers are opportunistic individuals who may offer quick-fix cleanup, repairs, and inspections, often demanding upfront cash payments for shoddy or incomplete work. Some disaster chasers pressure homeowners to sign a contract on the spot for future repair work and may promise their insurer will pay. This can leave the homeowner liable to pay a commission or inflated repair bills not covered by their insurance policy, as insurers will only pay for approved work that is covered by a policy. CEO Andrew Hall said the ICA is actively advocating for policyholders. “The ICA has stood up an industry-wide taskforce to help manage claims from this event with insurers beginning to process claims. “We encourage anyone who’s been impacted by re-

cent storms to lodge a claim with their insurer even if they don’t know the full extent of the damage yet and it’s also important to remain on alert for disaster chasers.” Residents who believe they may have been approached by or signed with a disaster chaser should seek guidance from their insurer. Tips for identifying and dealing with a disaster chaser • An insurer will not send a tradesperson or builder for repairs to your home without notifying you and providing you with details • Speak to your insurer before agreeing to any repairs or rebuilding work to make sure your insurer will cover the work • A tradesperson or builder who is working for your insurer will not ask you for payment • If in doubt, ask for identification such as a builder’s licence or driver’s licence, and ring your insurer to check • If you sign a contract with a disaster chaser, you have a statutory 10-day cooling-off period. Your insurer can help you end the relationship with the disaster chaser .

released in February and proposed reducing the amount of off-leash accessible beach area at Stumers Creek. After extensive community consultation Council Officers recommended that only “minor changes” occur at Stumers Creek and highlighted the importance of the site. The new provision for Stumers Creek states that visitors arriving by car or walking their pets past the carpark must keep dogs onleash until they are at least 10 metres beachside of the carpark. This measure improves safety for pedestrians and motorists. The existing off-leash zone, which extends approximately three kilometres north and south of the creek, will remain unchanged. Stumers Creek Off-Leash Dog Beach Association spokesperson Bree Logie said the community advocacy group was happy with the outcome. “This is a fabulous compromise compared to the original plan. “This will allow us to continue to have our dogs offleash and we couldn’t have

done this without such strong community support - they were by our side, and they allowed us to be their voice.” Bree also thanked Council for their support and engagement. “Thank you to the Mayor for listening to us and engaging with the group - we appreciate that. “And thank you also to Cr Taylor Bunnag for his support and Cr Maria Suarez for her guidance and Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien.” The group will now work towards hosting information sessions and making sure people are compliant with the changes. “We are looking forward to hosting an event with Council in the near future – our work is just beginning as we want to do the right thing and make sure everyone is aware of what is going on and education is paramount,” Bree stated. Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien was quick to champion the result and the conduct from the group. “After months of tireless community advocacy, respectful conversations, and

genuine grassroots organising, Stumers Creek will remain an off-leash area for locals and visitors to enjoy. “Congratulations to the whole Stumers Creek Off Leash Dog Beach Committee on this hard-earned result, and thank you for your practical, polite and persistent advocacy.” Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez stated that Council received extensive and varied feedback on the Stumers Creek area. “From this feedback, we identified accessibility concerns as well as tourism and social benefits. The final plan reflects these considerations and will retain the current offleash areas, with one change: dogs must remain on a leash in the carpark and for the first 10 metres onto the beach.” Cr Suarez also stated that the Stumers Creek area was part of a much bigger and broader plan. “There is no doubt we love our pets and outdoor spaces and projections are we will have 80,000 registered dogs by 2046, so planning is very important. “Regionally, this plan aims

to create safe, enjoyable spaces for dogs and their owners in response to our growing population and we’ve listened to local voices, drawn on expert advice and used data and research to ensure provision of these shared spaces reflect the needs and values of our whole community.” Next steps Council will begin delivering the action plan in stages, subject to funding and annual budget processes. Before any changes to dog access can go ahead, the local laws need to be updated. This will happen in 2026, and the community will be kept updated throughout the process. SPEED HUMPS Dear editor, I am writing on behalf of several concerned community members regarding the newly installed high-speed humps at the South Coolum Rd Shopping Centre car park. Since their installation, many locals have noticed that the humps are excessively high and difficult to drive over safely. A number of residents, myself included, are worried that these humps are causing potential damage to vehicles, particularly to low-clearance cars. What was intended to improve safety is now creating unnecessary risk and frustration for everyday shoppers. We believe this is an issue worth bringing to the community’s attention, as many of us rely on this centre for our daily shopping and errands. We would appreciate if the centre’s management or relevant authorities could review the height and design of these humps to ensure they meet appropriate standards and do not create further problems for drivers. E-MOBILITY DEVICES Dear editor, When will the Crisafulli LNP Government do something to prevent more deaths and injuries from personal mobility devices? Three local high schools are rightly banning them from

their schools. The Police Service is actively informing the public about the risks these PMD’s pose to users, pedestrians, and drivers when operated by inexperienced individuals. Talking to family and friends reveals just about everyone has had close calls or seen dangerous behaviour by young people speeding, not wearing helmets, doubling or not obeying the rules on the road or footpaths. The police have one hand tied behind their back, the laws are totally inadequate, and we are told the government will only act after the parliamentary inquiry hands down its finding in March 2026. Then how long will it take before laws come into force? Yes, laws need to be well drafted, however one step they could take would be that all PMD’s should be registered and have readily seen number plates so they can be traced if observed acting illegally. The registered owner would then be responsible for either revealing the user of the device or be held responsible for any offence. Even this process would take some months to implement, but the government needs to make a start now. Will local LNP member and Police Minister, Dan Purdie help the police to keep us all safe and stand up to the Premier and call for action now? How many deaths and injuries does it take? DEMENTIA CARERS Dear editor, Compassionate dementia carers come from all walks of life, and while their challenges may differ, they share resilience and dedication in supporting loved ones. For some, the role of carer can be a struggle when they feel they are losing their identity, but it can generate a passion to help people they meet along the dementia

journey, looking after a loved one. In railway terms, it’s not about the cared and carer being shunted into an outof-the-way siding of life but staying on board the train together on the mainline with a shared destination in mind. It may not be all aboard the express, but an all-stations service with stops along the way to relive memories of past journeys together before the dementia diagnosis. On any dementia journey, lack of support, overcoming the frustrations of misdiagnosis, and the emotional turmoil of caregiving can create feelings of isolation and loneliness in both the cared and carers, struggling to survive but fired with the desire to thrive. Carers need care too. Key issues for the carer are a sense of loss and grief for the person the cared used to be, mixed with a cloud of ambiguity hanging over the present and future scenarios in the dementia journey. Dementia support networks are critical for harnessing the transformative power of peer groups, counselling, and coaching for carers to maintain patience and understanding. The challenges are greater for young carers navigating personal growth and academic pressures. They may be reluctant to ask adults for help when so many are untutored in how to interact with a person with dementia. The challenges can be even greater in rural and regional areas with limited access to support services. At times, carers may put pressure on themselves, feeling they are not doing enough for their loved ones, especially when negotiating respite breaks. When carers feel supported and understood, everyone’s quality of life improves. Thankfully, dementia doulas can fill gaps for families struggling to access support. A qualified doula serves as a companion guide for the cared and carer on their dementia journey. Dementia doulas not only provide practical advice and connections to support networks, but they also offer a sympathetic shoulder to lean on when times are tough, and

BEYOND BLUE SUPPORT AT CHRISTMAS Dear editor, The festive season can be a joyous time for many people, as they take a well-earned break from work and school and spend time with family and friends. It’s a time to rest and reset for the new year. Yet for others, this time of year can be particularly difficult and distressing, and a time they hope will pass quickly. It can bring additional financial pressures, strain relationships, and heighten feelings of loneliness. The festive season may also intensify isolation, particularly for those separated from family or grieving the loss of a loved one. So, as we head into the holiday break, we want Australians to know that regardless of what they’re dealing with, they don’t have to face it alone. It’s common to put off seeking help because we can’t quite find the words to express our needs. But when you contact us, you don’t have to know what to say. YOUTH LAWS Dear editor, Victoria, in particular, and the Qld government are struggling with the explosion of violent youth crime and the use and abuse of E-scooters.

One deterrent administrators need to explore, is to place the parents or guardians before the courts, to make them accountable and suffer the legal consequences of negligence and blatant child abuse. Judges need to be prepared to make the supervisors of these young criminals responsible for children in their care. Those at home receiving welfare payments need to face fines, lose their welfare payments and be incarcerated, so it is taken seriously. Too often, taxpayers foot the bill for court costs and damages to public property, while the so-called guardians of these young criminals plead ignorance. If they come from dysfunctional homes, governments need appropriate services to support those struggling with children out of control. It can’t just be left to the rest of the community to pick up the tab! As for severe consequences or any consequence, this hits the “minders” of these children running amuck in gangs with deadly weapons, readily available from any kitchen or hardware. How are these perpetrators monitored or, if not, why aren’t they? Where are the parents in most cases and why haven’t the authorities and court system taken the trouble to pull the “minders” of these perpetrators into line? Recalcitrant children let loose without consequences, reflect upon the households where they live. Children pushing boundaries learn this at home unsupervised, or in gangs where the modus operandi is lawlessness and violence, for which no checks are made. Children left to their own devices find likeminded groups willing to contest the rules and take risks. Expensive E-scooter usage needs new laws, to prevent accidents and misuse, colliding with legal transport, or acting as if they own the highways and by-ways of our communities. Children need wholesome activities with parental control, consent and involvement in their leisure time and supervision at night. Whole communities are under siege by out-of-control young

criminals looking for an adrenalin rush, defying the laws which keep our society safe. E. Rowe, Marcoola. HECS DEBTS Dear editor, The recent 20% cut to HECS student debts, saving the average recipient about $6 per week, primarily benefits over 3 million younger Australians— many of whom later achieve higher incomes. This policy disproportionately aids wealthier individuals, raising significant equity concerns while costing the government $16–20 billion upfront. In contrast, directing similar funds to provide a $6 weekly cost-of-living reduction to the 4.5 million aged pensioners would cost roughly $1.4 billion annually but offer immediate, broadbased economic relief to a vulnerable and lower-income demographic. The HECS cut tilts support toward a narrower, more affluent voter group, whereas a pensioner-focused measure would distribute benefits more equitably and bolster economic stability for a larger segment of Australians facing financial hardship. For a truly fair and effective policy, government funds should prioritise widespread relief over targeted debt forgiveness that risks widening socioeconomic disparities. Colin Caudell, Coolum Beach. NATIONAL DAY CHAMPIONS LIFEFLIGHT VOLUNTEERS FRIDAY December 5 saw volunteers from across the county and internationally recognised for the tremendous work they do unwavering within all manner of organisations. From sporting clubs to community groups and rescue organisations such as LifeFlight, these community champions were celebrated. LifeFlight has more than 200 volunteers who donate their time across many events

and locations such as the Bundaberg Soiree, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba Galas, fundraising initiatives, and the ‘First Minutes Matter’ trauma training. LifeFlight Foundation Board Chair Stewart Morland said LifeFlight’s volunteers donate hundreds of hours of their time to promote and support the aeromedical organisation across the state. “Their generosity is unmatched when it comes to

GETTING around Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland on the weekend is about to get easier and cheaper thanks to the new weekend bus route ‘613’. Running as part of a 12month trial, the new 613 bus loop connects Sunshine Cove, Dalton Drive, Sunshine Plaza and Alexandra Headland, making it perfect for brunch catch-ups, Christmas shopping, or beach trips without the parking hassles. The new service started on December 13 and the hopon, hop-off service is running every 30 minutes from 6am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, for just 50 cents. The route 613 weekend bus loop trial will run for 12 months and has been proudly funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s Transport Levy. Over the 12-month trial

period, Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will work closely to monitor service usage to inform future public transport planning decisions and deliver services that best meet the needs of the Sunshine Coast community. Sunshine Coast Council Division 8 Councillor Taylor Bunnag said he was pleased to see the Council-funded and community-led trial begin across Divisions 8 and 4. “The route 613 12-month trial responds to strong community demand for better public transport in Sunshine Cove, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland and I’m pleased we could deliver this in time for the busy holiday season,” Cr Bunnag said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for residents and

Noosa Council to keep traffic woes at bay with holiday changes IN AN effort to make visiting Noosa Beach and Hastings Street a little less stressful over the Christmas and New Year period, Noosa Council will be again implementing a raft of measures to make the journey and visit a little less painful. These will include temporary traffic changes in and around Hastings Street to help reduce congestion and improve safety and using the Noosa Surf Club carpark as a dedicated drop-off area. Noosa Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Shaun Walsh, said the changes will run from December 20 to January 4, 2026. “Using this carpark as a drop-off area, with marshals on hand to assist, helps keep traffic flowing through the Hastings Street precinct roundabouts - as we saw last year – because we don’t have vehicles circling, stopping, maneuvering, and waiting for parking spaces, which causes the long queues,” Mr Walsh

said. “Families and beachgoers move through this area on foot in very high numbers over the holidays, and by managing vehicle movements it makes for a much safer environment for pedestrians too.” Noosa Council will provide shaded waiting areas at the drop-off area, extra female toilets, a filtered water station, and more bike and scooter parking. Disability parking permit spaces and emergency vehicle access will remain available throughout the holiday period. “Council staff will be on the ground to guide pedestrians and provide information and advice on the travel options available,” Mr Walsh said. “Our beach precincts become some of the busiest places in Queensland during the Christmas and New Year period, creating significant congestion.”

Visitors are encouraged to park at Noosa Heads Lions Park, Noosa Junction bus station, The J, and Noosa Marina, and hop aboard either the free Go Noosa Loop Bus or low-cost Translink services to travel quickly and easily around town. The Loop Bus (065) will operate from December 13 to January 26. “All of the initiatives we’re putting in place are designed to help manage congestion, improve pedestrian safety and help ensure everyone can access the Main Beach precinct as easily as possible during the busiest time of year.” Noosa Council encourages residents and visitors to plan ahead, make use of alternative transport options instead of a private car wherever possible, and enjoy a safe and relaxed summer season in Noosa. “We thank locals and visitors for their patience and cooperation,” Mr Walsh said.

TREES ORDERS THE Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution (Fences and Trees) Act 2011 (Qld) has been in force long enough for most people to know the rub. Orders can be obtained requiring the cutting back or removing of trees which are likely to cause personal injury or property damage or are causing a ‘substantial, ongoing and unreasonable interference’ with the use and enjoyment of the applicant’s land. Mostly this jurisdiction is the preserve of fairly mundane battles between neighbours over excessive debris and cracked footpaths. But when it gets to the preservation of light and views it gets more interesting. The Act put an end to the age-old common law principle that there is no property in a view. Instead, the Act decided that if the interference with light or a view was not only ‘substantial, ongoing and unreasonable’, but also a ‘severe obstruction’, then an order could be made.

Cue numerous tedious cases about people’s unproductive solar systems, but also some cracking high-value matters seeking to preserve views from the hills of Noosa, Peregian and Buderim. The caveat to the ‘views’ jurisdiction is that the outlook in question must have existed when the applicant took possession of the land. A client of mine commissioned the photographer who shot the marketing materials for his home purchase ten years earlier to replicate the photographs exactly and that sort of expense is clearly justified compared to the loss of value that goes with a partially or fully impeded vista in an exclusive locale. The Tribunal does it’s best to balance the rights of the parties and has been quite inventive in the orders it makes. They often end up requiring the view-preserving neighbour to schedule and pay the costs of regular trims of their neighbour’s trees well into the future. This makes some sense, given the boost to their property value the applicant is receiving. However, it tends to go down like a wet balloon with the ‘successful’ litigant who preferred their years-long legal battle to end with the offending trees ripped out for good.

FESTIVE AND GENEROUS COMMUNITY SPIRIT I WAS delighted to be part of delivering the Seaside Shores Community Association Christmas Event on a Sunday afternoon at Glen Retreat Park at Marcoola recently. There was such excitement from the young families there with one parent sharing with me how her five-year-old son was excitingly remembering all the entertainment from the magician, puppet shows, face painting, Santa, sausage sizzle and much more from the previous year and couldn’t wait to get to this year’s event. The event certainly went well and was in line with our aim at the Association to support building a vibrant beachside community. We all were so pleased to get big thanks from all the wonderful young people and their parents. These days we are spoilt for choice in the festive season at our events with individual community members, and local organisations very generous supporters. Bendigo Bank, Sunshine Coast Council, Heart and Sold Realty, Rita’s Chinese Therapy and Massage, Papillon Massage and the Stylish Canine Dog Grooming were some of the generous donors. These donations

made it possible to make the event largely free for the large crowd that attended. Christmas is the most joyous time of the year when we help others, and it means so much. According to Bill Crews from the Uniting Church in Sydney “the mission of churches is that no one should be too poor, or too isolated or too disadvantaged to share in the magic of Christmas.” Clearly, the spirit of Christmas has extended into the wider community for Christians and non-Christians alike. We are aware that there are many charities providing food and shelter and the basic necessities for an increasing population across the world. The Sunshine Coast like other areas has plenty of people living below the poverty line. The Salvation Army, St Vincent De Paul, Coolum HeARTs and Uniting Church are some of the many wonderful organisations ensuring people don’t miss out. The goodwill, good humour and incredible kindness of volunteers and donors ensures everyone can enjoy Christmas. We are fortunate to live in generous and compassionate communities and I wish everyone a happy, healthy and harmonious festive season and great 2026.

COOLUM MEN’S SHED CELEBRATE AT COOLUM HOTEL THE Coolum Beach Men’s Shed enjoyed their annual Christmas lunch at the Coolum Beach Hotel recently with many of their loyal supporters and sponsors as well as wives and partners also joining the men for the festive lunch. The men reflected on a great year which featured many proud moments such as their annual Sportsman’s Lunch, the Shed Music Festival which this year ran over a whole weekend and was a huge success and the second Men’s Shed Race Day at Sunshine Coast Turf Club. The men also took time out

to remember friends who had been lost throughout the year and those from other years who were represented by their families. “On behalf of the Coolum Men’s Shed Board of Management, we wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy, and Healthy New Year. May the holiday season bring joy, peace, and time with family and friends. Smuggling in great music for New Year’s Eve! THERE is only one place to be this New Year’s Eve for great live music which is free and that’s at the Coolum Beach Bowls Club with local band ‘Contraband’ taking to the stage for a night of great music. Hailed as the Sunshine Coast’s premier covers band, Contraband is now heading into its 14th year, and in that

time have wowed audiences all over Queensland whilst gathering a solid local following. From large clubs to high profile corporate clients, the band has a reputation of providing quality professional entertainment and visuals and the band is comprised of talented musicians. BOM RELEASES 2025 SUMMER LONG-RANGE FORECAST THE BUREAU of Meteorology has issued the long-range forecast for the 2025 summer season, and it shows summer days and nights are likely to be warmer than average across most of Australia. For Queensland specifically, daytime temperatures are likely to be above average.

There is an increased chance of unusually warm daytime temperatures for large areas. Warmer than usual nights are very likely for much of the state, with an increased chance of unusually warm overnight temperatures, especially in the north. Summer rainfall is likely to

be above average for parts of the far north and below average for western parts. There are roughly equal chances of above or below average rainfall in the east. The forecast will evolve over summer and the seasonal forecast will be updated every week.

The Indian Ocean Dipole is expected to return to neutral in December. The latest conditions in the tropical Pacific indicate a relatively week La Niña event is underway. This La Niña event is expected to be short-lived. Our rainfall forecast currently suggests there will be little overall influence from this

event. Every year between October and April is Australia’s peak time for severe thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, flooding, heatwaves and bushfires. Severe thunderstorms are more common from October to December, bringing the risk of heavy rainfall, damaging winds, large hail and the

risk of flooding anywhere in Australia. Australia’s fire agencies advise there is an increased risk of fire for parts of Victoria, western and southern Western Australia, and parts of central northern New South Wales. https://www.bom.gov.au/ australia/index.shtml

Coolum GP Dr Beak retires after half a century in local medicine IN 1978, two and half years after graduating from the University of Queensland Medical School, two young Doctors were walking along the David Low Way in Coolum with Mr Andrew Zafir who was the Pharmacist in Coolum at that time. The two young Doctors made an offer on a beach shack - situated two doors from where McDonalds sits today. On approval from Council they established the Coolum Beach Medical Centre and then in 1979 they established the Peregian Beach Medical Centre. Those early years were tough on the young Doctors as they provided a comprehensive 24 hour 7 days a week service. Of the 50years Dr Greg Beak has been practising Medicine, 47 of those years have been at Coolum and Peregian which is no small feat, and no other Doctor has practised in the area for that length of time. Early on and with young families, life was very busy with the young Doctors on call every second night and

weekend. After 25 years they decided to develop the Coolum site. However the Council at the time had different ideas leading them to disintegrate the business. Dr Greg Beak then contracted himself out to Suncoast Medical Centre in Coolum on South Coolum Road and that is where he has worked until retirement this year. In Peregian he continued ownership of the Peregian Beach Medical Centre until 2018 when he amalgamated with the Peregian Family Medical Centre where he became a contracting Doctor at this practice until now. The practice is now called The Peregian Beach Medical centre - the name Dr Beak established in 1979 and is owned by one of the 10 Drs working there. Dr Beak said that some of the biggest changes that he saw in medicine over his career locally were with the ambulance and the arrival of specialist GPs. “The establishment of a local ambulance service great-

ly helped. Before the William St Ambulance Station an ambulance officer was also the driver and often the practise nurse or the Doctor would have to accompany seriously ill patients to hospital, whereas now there are paramedics. “The other big change is the number of specialists available to take pressure off GPs,” Dr Beak said. Personally, the big changes Dr Beak has seen was when he stopped doing after hours care after 3O years of practice and then more recently when he sold his business interests which allowed him to just practice medicine. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career, and I treasure all the interactions I’ve had with people over the years, and I consider many of my patients to be friends.” Now in his 75th year Dr Beak thinks it is time to hang up the shingle and he intends to continue playing tennis and enjoying snow skiing as well as continuing his relationship with his cattle property in Central Queensland from where he originally hailed.

The Sunshine Coast will always be home though, and Coolum Beach holds a special place.

THE SUNSHINE Coast will once again welcome some of the AFL’s biggest names as three clubs hit the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex for their pre-season summer camps, bringing elite training and community engagement to local fans. St Kilda, Brisbane Lion and the Western Bulldogs will be using the venue as a base. Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said having elite sports teams choose the Sunshine Coast as a training location demonstrated the breadth of facilities available in the region. “When dual Premiership-winning teams like the Brisbane Lions choose to come and train on the Sunshine Coast, it tells you that our spaces, our environment,

our weather and our people are an attractive mix.”

Bring your family, grab your club colours The St Kilda Football Club will be up in the new year and will host a training session on Wednesday January 21, running from 10am to 12.30pm. This will be a great opportunity for Saints supporters to see their heroes up close and enjoy the summer atmosphere. The Brisbane Lions return on Friday January 30, training from 8:30am to 11:30am. The Lions will also host community activations on other fields until 1pm, giving fans even more chances to connect with the club and their premiership winning players. Lions GM of Football, Danny Daly said the team

was looking forward to getting back to the Sunshine Coast for the third year in a row. “The elite facilities, weather and beaches all add up to making it a great few days. The players really enjoy getting amongst the community and visiting local footy clubs,” Mr Daly said. The Western Bulldogs will round out the trio and be heading to the Sunshine Coast for their training camp from January 30 to February 5, 2026. These sessions are free to attend and offer a unique chance for locals and visitors to experience AFL action on the Sunshine Coast.
