A SWIFT call to action was organised on Saturday September 20 in response to recent whale entanglements in shark netting off the coast at Noosa and Marcoola, with the concerned community members asking the State Government to remove shark nets during whale migration months. On Wednesday September 17 a mother and calf were entangled off Noosa and a late-night release was successful. On Friday morning another baby whale was entangled off Marcoola with that whale also freed later in the morning. The recent entanglements have highlighted arguments from conservationists who state that Queensland should follow the same practise as NSW who remove their nets during whale migration months. Removal of shark nets during this period is also a recommendation from an independent report commissioned to evaluate the Queensland Shark Control Program and provide recommendations. Local Councillors from both Noosa and Sunshine Coast Council as well as independent Noosa MP Sandy Bolton also agree with the removal of shark netting during whale migration months, with Ms Bolton instrumental in the swift release on Wednesday night. “We were advised that a contractor was on route to assess whether a safe rescue was possible on the night. They arrived at 9:20pm, with successful re-

CONSERVATIONISTS SPEAK OUT Envoy Foundation Founder Andre Borell who has been working in the field for some time and directed a film for Netflix on the topic, said that more needs to be done. “Images such as what we saw this week is harming the reputation of Queensland and the bare minimum should be to do what NSW is doing which is to remove the shark nets during whale migration months.” Mr Borell said that there was also not enough information on how freed whales fare after a release. “Whales are highly migratory and they only feed in Antarctica and when they are entangled it is a very stressful event where they use up a lot of energy and we have no data on how well they survive once they are released and if they do make it back to Antarctica. “It’s great to celebrate a release however we shouldn’t have them entangled in the first instance.” THE CASE FOR NETS Online comments from shared posts from the two whale entanglements were mostly in favour of the removal of shark nets however those who were for the nets to remain cited swimmer safety

as the main priority which is the message from the State Government as to why they continue to use them. Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett responded by stating that the Crisafulli Government makes, “no apology to prioritise the safety of people above all else.” “Until the new technology is as effective at protecting beach goers as the old, we will continue to invest in what keeps Queenslanders and our beaches safe. “Unlike our southern neighbours, our beaches remain hugely popular throughout winter, and we won’t compromise on swimmer safety.” Minister Perrett’s office also highlighted statistics to back up the course of action from the State Government stating that approximately 45 thousand whales will migrate past Queensland’s coast this year and that on average fewer than six become entangled in nets or drumlines. Despite these figures, shark nets and drumlines are responsible for other marine life becoming entangled with the KPMG report stating that in NSW during the 2023-24 period nets caught 13 Green Turtles, 11 Leatherback Turtles, and five Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins. These incidents led to a review of their program… and the removal of shark nets one month earlier in April, to accommodate height-

The Noosa MP followed up the next day with the Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett and said she will continue to advocate on the matter, asking for the trialled replacement of shark nets with alternatives during whale migration months. “The independent review of the Shark Control Program by KPMG states efforts to minimise negative impacts on marine ecosystems are not currently achieved by the program and recommends the trialling of the removal of shark nets during the winter whale migration seasons.” Similar statements were made by both Councillor Taylor Bunnag and Maria Suarez from Sunshine Coast Council, with Cr Suarez acknowledging that the program falls under the jurisdiction of the State Government. “I and other Councillors have raised questions about their existing use, what impact it is having on marine species and their effectiveness. It has been difficult to get the data, especially regarding the quantity and species of marine animals inadvertently injured or killed in the nets from the State departments. “As there is definitely increasing community sentiment to transition to modern, nonlethal alternatives to managing

WITH THE September school holidays underway, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has launched Operation Xray Spring Break, a state-wide campaign targeting unsafe driving behaviours during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. As of September 18, 2025, 218 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads. Many of these tragedies were linked to preventable behaviours such as speeding and drink or drug driving, making road safety an operational priority for police. Motorists can expect to see police anywhere at any time, with high visibility patrols and roadside enforcement focusing on the Fatal Five: speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue and distraction. Police will also be conducting roadside drug and breath testing, and proactive high visibility and covert patrols across the region, from main roads and highways to rural

roads and back streets. Highway Patrol units from the Sunshine Coast and Gympie will be deploying to the Great Sandy National Park and motorists can expect to see police patrolling Rainbow Beach, Teewah and the surrounds to set the tone for expected driving behaviours on the sand. Further south, Moreton North Highway Patrol will also be focused on beach drivers on Bribie Island. North Coast Region Assistant Commissioner Kevin Guteridge said police take a zero-tolerance approach to reckless behaviour on our roads and beaches. “Once drivers hit the sand, unfortunately we can see a lapse in responsibility and respect for the road rules,” Assistant Commissioner Guteridge said. “The offences we tend to see on the beach are drink or drug driving, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and dangerous driving. Tragically, we’ve

seen these actions result in serious injury or death. “Please take into consideration your environment, the unpredictable terrain, tide times, the condition of your vehicle, and most importantly the campers and beach goers around you. “Whether you’re driving on the bitumen, a dirt road or the sand, the same road rules apply.” Running from Saturday September 20 to Friday October 10, Operation Xray Spring Break covers the school holidays and the first week of the new term, when traffic volumes are at their peak and the risk of crashes is significantly higher. Cr Wilkie said Council supports the Shark control program however, these incidents reinforced the need for the State Government to consider a trial of removing the mesh nets during the winter migrat-

ing season. “Council endorsed a Mayoral Minute in July this year requesting the State trial removing the mesh nets for the shark control program and use other non-lethal measures, “These were recommendations from a review conducted by KPMG for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, so we urge the State Government to implement the recommenda-

tion,” Cr Wilkie said.

NETS & RECOMMENDATIONS Mesh Nets are typically 186 metres long and six metres deep. They are deployed parallel to the shore and anchored to the seabed, with floats maintaining them in a surface-set position. Mesh Nets do not create a complete barrier, allowing

sharks and other marine life to swim around or under them, but function by entangling animals that come into contact with them. When a shark or other marine animal is caught in the net, it is typically found and dealt with during checks by shark control program contractors, where target sharks are euthanised if not already dead, and non-target species are re-

leased if still alive. All nets are modified with three dolphin pingers and four whale pingers in an effort to reduce entanglement with these species. The KPMG report states that removing mesh nets during the whale migration season reduces the environmental impact of operations by preventing whales from becoming entangled in SCP nets. This measure

will not only improve the safety of staff who undertake dangerous rescue operations to release entangled marine animals, but will also mitigate negative media attention and boost community sentiment.

PILL TESTING Dear editor, Whatever your viewpoint on contraband substances the principle of harm reduction is a higher order of morality. The Crisafulli Government decision to ban pill testing is outright negligence. Several studies around the world have proved beyond doubt that pill testing saves lives. So why wouldn’t the QLD Premier be interested in saving the lives of QLD people? Some have suggested he must appease the far right of his party. Others that it’s a religious thing. But worst of all was the Premier’s comment that “he can’t condone illicit drug use.” If the police can’t stop people obtaining these substances, then the Premier will not either! And that’s the point - it is not about what you perceive is right or wrong. It is about the good works you can achieve and in this case that is saving lives! I would have thought that is the essential “Christian” point here - to reduce harm to people! Dylan White, Coolum Beach.

POLITICAL GAMES Dear editor, Football grand finals are not the only games in town. In our post-truth world, the big game in Canberra occurs where politicians play in a stadium to a crowd where many don’t believe in the objective truth. The ground is fertile because voters have been trained to believe that their personal truth is the one that matters. They don’t want to be confused by the facts, allowing politicians to play on their fears. This sets the ground for conspiracy theories to thrive. It is a sellout of science, expertise, and hard evidence. They have been replaced by the ‘what works is true’ if it achieves a favourable political outcome. Rare leaders telling the objective truth are becoming revolutionaries in an era of

deceit. We live in a world where some international leaders don’t just lie, they don’t care, then double down. Politicians telling lies is not new, but now they are judged not just by the falseness of what they say. The big political sin is getting caught by the media in a gotcha moment. There are no winners in this game, as admitting the truth is demeaned as a backflip, followed by a resignation to predictably ‘spend more time with the family.’ When there is conflict within a party, the political fix rarely involves a diligent search for the objective truth. When a member divulges the truth, backroom enforcers stifle any perception of disloyalty to the leader, just like the conga line of denials before a losing footy coach is moved on. It will be left to us citizens to support an accountable democratic system and honest media outlets, to continue the pursuit of the absolute truth for the following generations. ROAD SURFACES & CLIMATE Dear editor, We are aware of changes to our climate and the effect that increased emissions will have on warming the planet. The government appears to be not willing to act on those things it can fix within its own domain. Cool road surfaces, including those with colour modifications to increase reflectivity, have been shown to reduce surface temperatures by about three to 15 degrees Celsius. Reflective coatings and lighter colours help lower solar heat absorption, thereby mitigating the urban heat island effect and reducing surface and ambient temperatures to some extent. Changes to the way we change road surfaces in urban

infill areas are deemed not to occur until after 2035. Since 1990 our population growth has contributed to a rise of 49% in our emissions. Our net migration contributed just under 75% of our population increase. Consequently, higher population growth and migration rates will make it harder to reach net zero by 2050 because emissions reductions must offset not only economic activity but also the increasing demand from a growing population. When is the government going to act responsibly on population/net overseas migration and reduce our emissions and temperatures with better cooler road surfaces? Colin Caudell, Coolum Beach.

YAROOMBA COM GARDEN Dear editor, On behalf of the newly formed Yaroomba Community Garden, I would like to thank all the people and groups who have supported us in the early stages. Firstly, Friends of Yaroomba Inc., for pushing for the formation of a local community garden and generously donating money towards getting it started. Our local Councillor, Taylor Bunnag, who persevered in finding us a suitable place to set up, at Meadowlands Park, Jenyor St., and also organised a financial contribution from the Sunshine Coast Council. Elliot Lacy, the S.C.C. Community Garden Coordinator has been very helpful with his advice and his organising of the materials for the garden beds. Coolum Community Native Nursery donated one of the garden beds and has offered support. Paul Foley of Foleys Tanks at Woombye kindly delivered free of charge, our first three garden beds and Mitre10 Coolum has also been generous with their support. Hopefully Yaroomba Community Garden continues to grow and flourish and helps to

UNITY WATER Dear editor, Once upon a time, in a country we all know, but have not much in common with now, life was honest and fair, from the government to your friendly neighbours. People paid their way with their hardearned wages. Governments, both local, state and federal, ran their business efficiently, without enforcing their economic mismanagement upon their people, because they were open and accountable to their constituents for every penny. But with the dawn of the third millennium, bureaucratic and political over-representation in all three levels of government had to be paid above the basic wages of the madding crowds footing the tax bill. There was never enough money to go round, and households and businesses were targets. Using their consumption of power and water, governments conjured up schemes to hit their constituents with newly created taxes, like never before! At the turn of the new millennium, Queensland suffered a drought. People began to buy and install tanks, to save rainwater and reduced consumption. When consumers reduced their consumption of water, due to reverting to using tank water, council rates suffered financial hardship. On this premise, the State Labor Government created the Government invention of Unity Water. Today, all power retailers and Unity Water administrators, impose daily electricity and water supply charges and taxes on each account, easily subject to increase costing, without any recourse for consumers to reduce these taxes. Water or power consumption reduction has minimal effect on the final bill!

The service is free and BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Acting Medical Director Dr Junia Larsen said the team was excited to be bringing the mobile service back to Coolum for a second time. “We had a great response from women when we were at Coolum in 2024, and we are hoping that this year even more local woman will find the time to prioritise their health and visit the mobile service for their regular breast screen.” BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast screening to women aged 40 and over. “Appointments are really

quick, generally around 20 minutes and you don’t need a doctor’s referral,” said Dr Larsen. Women aged 50 – 74 are encouraged to have a breast screen every two years, as studies show this age group benefits the most from regular screening. A breast screen can find very small cancers that can’t be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. “Finding breast cancer early can really make all the difference,” said Dr Larsen. “Early detection gives women more options for treatment and a greater chance of successful recovery.” Free screening is also available at Caloundra, Gympie, Maroochydore, Nambour and Noosaville all year round. • 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. Younger women do get breast cancer, but the risk of breast cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50. • Nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have NO family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease at all. • A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can feel anything.

is ‘Remote Control’ – a quiz show style event where laughs will be high on the agenda. “We have some great people involved in this one such as comedian Christian Hull and there’s going to be prizes and lots of audience participation. “We also have singing with the Sing Out Sister event which is for women and the Drag Pageant is another great event where people really get to go outside of their comfort zone.” The Rangebow Festival is proud to receive funding support through the Sunshine Coast Council’s Emerging Events Initiative, aimed at nurturing new and innovative events that draw regional and national audiences. “It’s fantastic to have the backing of the Sunshine Coast Council,” Wayne added. “Support like this helps festivals like ours grow and highlight diversity and the hinterland region.”

THE VIEW Club’s 57th National Convention and 65th birthday was held at the Brisbane Entertainment and Convention Centre recently and around 600 members attended a full two-day program. Seven of the Twin Waters VIEW Club members attended and represented our Club. We had two club highlights with Vonda being on the debating panel for one of the three resolutions, ‘Addressing Loneliness and Isolation’ and our member Karen being just one of the 130 members to be

nationally recognised on the ‘Making a Difference’ honour roll. It was all very exciting! The overall program included speakers, presentations, resolutions, awards and two themed dinners where members dressed to the nines and sang and danced to fabulous bands. The next convention will be held in Geelong. We welcome new members to our Club. OH, WHAT a night! The Coolum State High School ‘Celebration of Excellence,’ arguably the biggest night of the year, once again showcased the extraordinary talents of the young people within our community. This year, we had more students achieving ‘Gold’ academic awards than ever before. We had more ‘Platinum’ awards, presented to students who achieve a gold award for each of their high school years, than ever before. We had more students achieving higher honours in sport than ever before and our special awards were presented to a collection of the most amazing students. The evening’s most prestigious award was, for the third year running, presented to a year 12 student who has currently not lost a single grade in any subject. That’s right, Mikenzie currently has achieved 100% in each of her rigorous academic subjects – extraordinary. As I said on the night, Coolum High is now one of Queensland’s premier academic institutions, routinely producing students who perform at the highest standards possible and achieving some of the state’s top ATAR scores. It was wonderful to welcome last year’s Wandama Award winner, Noah-Jay, back to help

present this year’s award and grow a great tradition of excellence at Coolum State High School. In-between awards, the ‘Celebration of Excellence’ showcased the most brilliant music and dance performances imaginable from the young people in our community. From the magical wind symphony through to the lyrical dance performance, Ben and Starlee’s rendition of ‘The Show Must Go On’ followed by a superb version of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ by our rock band, the accomplished Layla Barnett’s performance of ‘Mirrors’ before the joyfulness of the school’s Jazz Band - the performances were truly inspiring. And then, there was the finale, ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ performed by the Coolum Voices and industry professional, Darren Percival, to sum up the sentiment of the evening, that there are no barriers or limits to what we can achieve. The ‘Celebration of Excellence’ is a truly wonderful showcase that sums up who we are at Coolum High – talented, successful, community-minded, optimistic, vibrant and successful. What a night and what a showcase of the unbelievable talent we have in our school.

NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN RECENT figures from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) show that prices continued to rise across Queensland’s residential property markets in the June 2025 quarter (April – June 2025) with sustained growth redefining ‘entry level’ properties. The latest median sales results released show statewide median sales prices for houses rose 3.66% to $850,000, and similarly, units lifted 3.41% to $698,000 over the quarter. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the data

demonstrates the enduring stamina of the housing market right across the state. “Queensland continues to be an attractive, ‘picture perfect’ place to live, work, play and invest – we have the Olympics on the horizon and a robust economy underpinned by primary industries and a diverse range of other sectors, including manufacturing, film production, professional services, and science and technology, among others,” she said. “Particularly in our regional housing markets, first home buyers are seeing more

opportunity and relative value, while investors are also attracted to the strong rental yields compared to capital cities.” These comments are backed up by local agents with Joel Hood from Joel Hood Property stating that Coolum is a sought-after region. “So many more people want to get into this area, and I do not see this changing and there is never enough supply.” The local property market is attracting buyers keen to capitalise on the small sub-

NEW PATHWAY YUNGAR STREET TO CENTENARY HEIGHTS

WORK is due to begin on Monday October 13 on a new 1.8 metre-wide pathway stretching 212 metres along Greenoaks Drive, Coolum. The new path will start from the existing footpath at Yungar Street and will finish at Centenary Heights. Work should take about three weeks, pending good weather and site conditions. I’ve heard from many local residents about the challenges pedestrians face when walking or riding to the local shops and school. This new footpath will make a big difference by improving connectivity for families in the Coolum area. Cr Bunnag is concurrently delivering the additional length of footpath on Greenoaks in Division 8, and together we will deliver a complete footpath..

DANIEL’S LAW INTRODUCED TO QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT

IN PARLIAMENT, I introduced Daniel’s Law – landmark legislation to protect children from repeat offenders. This law honours the memory of Sunshine Coast school boy, Daniel Morcombe, whose abduction and murder in 2003 shocked Queenslanders and prompted his parents, Bruce and Denise, to campaign tirelessly for strong child safety measures. Their advocacy has already changed the way we educate children about safety, and Daniel’s Law takes that work further. Daniel’s Law will establish the Queensland Community Protection and Public Child Sex Offender Register and will consist of three tiers, in a multi-layered approach to child protection. This scheme is about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that the worst repeat offenders cannot hide in the shadows. Every child deserves the chance to grow up safe, supported, and free from harm, and this legislation is another step in making that a reality.

Dogs in Verrierdale is doing incredible work supporting children with special needs. With $93,601 in funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund’s 30th Anniversary Super Round, they have expanded with a new breeding room and puppy enrichment space, giving their assistance dogs the best start in life and helping more children gain independence. Smart Pups provides autism assistance dogs, seizure response dogs, mobility aids, diabetic alert dogs, and guiding dogs for children with visual impairments. Each dog undergoes 18 months of intensive training to meet the specific needs of the child they support. Community support makes this possible. Smart Pups welcomes fostering, volunteering, donations, or program sponsorship. More information is at smartpups.org.au. Round 125 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open, offering grants up to $35,000, and closes on October 31, 2025. Local groups can apply.

WHO GETS THE DOG?

RECENT amendments to the Family Law Act mean family pets are recognised as companion animals, not just property. This is a big change in how courts handle disputes about pets when couples separate. In the past, disputes over pets were rarely resolved in the family law courts with Judges prioritising decisions about children and other assets. But now the Act specifically allows them to make decisions about who gets the pet, for instance: • Giving the pet to one person, • Allowing a trusted third person take the pet by agreement, or • Ordering that pet will be sold.

In making its decision, the court will look at things like: • Who brought the pet into the relationship and how, • Who currently looks after the pet, • Who has been feeding, walking, and caring for the pet, • If there has been any family violence, • If anyone has been cruel to the pet or threatened it, • How attached each person or any children are to the pet, • If each person can care for the pet on their own in the future, • Any other important details. These changes mean the law now considers pets as important members of the family, not just things to be divided up. The goal is for the court to make decisions that are fair to both the humans and the pet.

GETTING READY

SOMEONE could be enjoying sitting in the shade of a tree today because someone many years ago had the foresight to plant a tree. Hopefully, that foresight and planning of our forebears can be replicated today for our fu-

ture generations. It has been one of those weeks with highs and lows. I was feeling fairly positive over the future with the Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed new Planning Scheme and then along came the announcement by the Federal Government of

the National Climate Risk Assessment. The first National Climate Risk Assessment has dire predictions from credible authors, such as the CSIRO and the pathways for net zero. Also, assessments from the Met Bureau on warming weather and Deloitte’s recommendations for strong climate targets for the economy. The predictions of more frequent and severe heatwaves, bushfires, droughts, floods, severe storms and cyclones seemed to dove-

tail into the need for another plan and action to make some changes. While we can pass the buck to politicians at all levels of government, it really comes down to the community level and individuals and then eventually governments might listen. We need to increase community awareness and preparedness for the various hazards requiring disaster management and community and individual safety, reducing chances of injury and property damage. At the mo-

ment do we know what are the muster points, safe refuge places and safe ways to exit a threatened area for a community such as Town of Seaside or a Mount Coolum Shores? There are on-line tools to help make plans for the heightened hazards with climate change. The Getting Ready Program from the state government can be accessed at getready.qld.gove.au/understand-your-risk) and is a great resource. The Seaside Shores Community Association is hoping

to finalise an information and planning session with community associations, individuals, Council and State Government agency representatives. It is intended to invite community groups and individuals to a session at the North Shore Community Centre (NSCC) at Mudjimba in late October. If we can plan and work together, hopefully we can be ready supporting the future for us all with many trees for us all to shade under. Let us plant a large future forest!

It was a sand mural with an extra special meaning with artist Owen Cavanagh (aka ‘The Rakey Master’) dedicating a recent mural to his beloved staffy ‘Max’ who was hit by a car. Whilst recuperating at the vet, Owen made this special tribute to his best friend at the southern end of Coolum Beach. Owen often creates sand murals on the beach and the best spot to witness one is from the boardwalk. We are not sure when the next one will be but keep an eye out. This particular one was captured by photographer Kerry Mulgrew (Kezign). You can check out more of Owen and Kerry’s art via their Facebook accounts at – ‘Rakey Master’ and ‘Kezign’.

Parkrun kicks off at Coolum ECO Park THE INAUGURAL Coolum ECO Parkrun was held on September 13 at the Quanda Industrial ECO park and despite the soggy conditions the run attracted many keen runners happy to take part in the first of its kind run in the local region. Parkrun is a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. These community runs are held over a 5k course and take place every Saturday morning and parkrun is positive, welcoming and inclusive, there is no time limit, and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along. The event is very popular with more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries and some 518 parkrun locations in Australia alone. The Coolum parkrun was the culmination of many months of hard work and fundraising by project team Donella Taylor, Gerry Taylor, and Sarah-Jane

Alley. Through their commitment the community now has a new healthy fitness outlet that also fosters positive community connection. The inaugural Coolum ECO Parkrun attracted a total of 101 runners and walkers, and 16 volunteers were also on hand to ensure the smooth running of the event. If you are interested in participating in the Coolum ECO Parkrun, it is conducted on Saturdays starting at 7am, at the corner of Quanda Road and Research Street in Coolum - look for the parkrun flag. For more details on all things parkrun, Google “parkrun near me”. Coolum Lions and Coolum Quota provided seed funding to help get the event up and running and attended the first event. Sunshine Coast Council Councillor Maria Suarez attended and participated in the Inaugural event as well.

The Coolum team were victorious and took out the top spot which then saw them go on and qualify for the Southeast Queensland

tournament where they went up against some of Brisbane’s strongest teams. The Coolum boys held their own and put in a stellar performance and won two out of four of their games. The young players showed resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship and should be very proud of their efforts. A

COOLUM COLTS WRAP SUCCESSFUL SEASON 2025 BY PAT CAVANAGH ON SUNDAY September 14 the curtain came down on the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League season with five grand finals being played at the Sunshine Coast Stadium at Kawana. Coolum Colts were represented in the Grand Finals by their Reserve Grade team. The Colts who finished the season as minor premiers came up against the fourth placed Stanley Rivers in the Grand Final. The Colts came up against a much bigger and physical side and they struggled to make inroads during the first half. The second half was a different story as the Colts settled into their patterns and structures more confidently and made a game of the

Grand Final. Blake Batton crashed over for a try with 10 minutes to go making the score 16 to 12 in favour of Stanley Rivers. The stage was set for a grandstand finish but unfortunately for the Colts, Stanly Rivers scored again with five minutes remaining thus ensuring premiership honors would go to Stanley Rivers. The final score being 22 to 12 to Stanley Rivers. Coach Blake Batton praised the courage and effort of the team and thanked the many supporters who made the trip to Kawana. President Simon Kidman said it was a great achievement for the club and for Coolum. “To have all four grades make the finals with three of the teams making the Preliminary Finals and one in the

Grand Final and the Coolum supporters are the most passionate in the league. “To see the hill filled to overflowing at home games is testament of what the Colts mean not only to the players, coaches, supporters and sponsors but to the wider members of the Coolum Community.” Simon stated that this is further reinforced by the fact that this year the club had over 30 businesses willing to come on board to support the club via sponsorship. Wrapping up the season the Colts hosted their awards night on Saturday September 20 at the Coolum Bowls Club and celebrated their standout players from the season. The Colts will now build on their momentum from 2025 and look to go even bigger in 2026.

BEACH SAFETY URGED AS SUMMER APPROACHES A NATIONAL campaign is urging everyone to be vigilant when it comes to surf safety, regardless of how well you think you may know the conditions. The message from the campaign is to, Stop, Look and Stay Alive. Following a heartbreaking season last summer that saw three drowning deaths on the Sunshine Coast, lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers are urging everyone to make safety a priority. In the rush to cool off or take a relaxing dip, crucial signs can be missed, and this can unfortunately put beachgoers at grave risk. The national campaign urges people to ‘Stop’ before they enter the water, ‘Look’ for the red and yellow flags to swim between and for any signs and warnings, and ‘Stay Alive’ by assessing whether they have the ability to tackle the prevailing conditions, not going in alone and only entering the water if it’s safe.

The 2025–26 volunteer surf lifesaving season begun on Friday, September 19, in time for the school holidays, and will run until early May 2026. Last financial year (2024– 25), more than 6.6 million people visited Sunshine Coast beaches, with lifeguards and lifesavers performing 550 rescues, 98,574 preventative actions and 7,696 first aid treatments. Sunshine Coast Council’s $7.2 million annual contribution towards lifeguarding services ensures year-round patrol services at beaches such as Coolum and vital rescue equipment. More than 124 professional lifeguards are employed across permanent, part-time and casual positions to cover 21 patrolled beach locations, from north Coolum to Bulcock Beach in Caloundra.

Sunshine Coast areas patrolled by lifeguards and lifesavers Sunshine Coast beaches are patrolled by volunteer lifesavers every weekend and on public holidays from 7am to 5pm during the summer season with extended hours to 6pm through the busy Christmas period.
