Dear Friends,

After decades of growing plants, I never get tired of the notion that the coming season will be a memorable one in the vegetable garden or the flower border, hoping new additions planted will be the best yet. Surely optimism and gardening, whether growing a pot plant indoors or tending an outside space, must go hand in hand… and I trust that you have enjoyed the rewards of your endeavours in the garden over the summer, despite the challenging record temperatures, and are looking forward to embracing what the season ahead can bring.

As the gardening season transitions, so has life at Coolings. Our current MD, Dwayne Ross, is leaving us after his many years (almost 20) of service and dedication to the business and I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to him for all he has achieved. Dwayne has made a significant contribution throughout his tenure and has played an important role in helping shape the company we are today. We wish him every success and happiness as he embarks upon an exciting new career opportunity.

We are pleased to announce that Andy Daly, who has been leading the retail operations at Coolings for almost 10 years, has now stepped into the role of MD - we are yet again recognising the benefit of promoting from within. The late Michael and Paul Cooling were strong advocates of this approach. For those that recall Michael, you will know he expected the best work ethic from all his staff, with Michael being my boss for over 30 years - I speak from experience.

The Gardeners Garden Centre won 1st Place for Garden Centre of the Year & Customer Service at The GCA South East Region Awards.

The reputation of the business amongst our customers has always been, and remains, of the utmost importance to us. Therefore, recent recognition from the Garden Centre Association that we ‘live and breathe’ the very best customer service, pitched amongst 200 garden centres across the UK, is something to really celebrate.

g n i n de r a G t e G with Gary As we move into the shorter days and darker months, it is so important to keep immersing ourselves in our gardens and the outdoors. Studies continually remind us that tending to plants can lower stress hormones, improve focus, and even speed up recovery from illness.

As seasoned gardeners can testify, this 'green therapy' effect is so strong that we encourage everyone to try it.

And to every new gardener out there, the team here at Coolings are delighted to share our love of gardening with you and help you through every season.

So, look forward to autumn and winter in your garden and don’t put away your trowel just yet! There are still plenty of rewarding opportunities, from planting hardy favourites to prepping for spring, the cooler months are perfect for making progress while enjoying crisp air and quiet moments outdoors.

And we have all the garden essentials you need to make the jobs easier, from clearing leaves to pruning perennials, shrubs and roses to prepare for next season’s growth and flowering.

This time of year is also a key time for planting and as we contemplate what to plant in readiness to flourish next year, one of my all-time favourites that flower for weeks, is the tulip.

The idea that in the 1600's tulip mania caused a major economic crash in the Netherlands seems incredible, however each spring we get a reminder of the amazing value for money that they are and yet again this autumn we have an unbeatable range of spring bulbs in our centres ready for you to plant now and reap the dividends next spring!

I’ll also be filling my pots and borders with colour for the coming months from our extended range of autumn bedding, which will be fully available at the end of September. You'll find all the inspiration you need within this issue of Cuttings to bring a cheerful boost to your garden from autumn into spring.

Spring flowering bulbs offer a stunning, low-maintenance way to bring colour and beauty to our gardens and with a little bit of planning, you will be rewarded with blooms from winter right through to the spring months.
