We know that our team are loyal with a significant proportion now earning long service benefits. The group who have served 20+ years seems to grow each year too.
I retain a 25% shareholding on behalf of the next generation who are currently forging their own independent careers in other fields.
We had already planned a meal at The House of Commons to celebrate successful navigation of the Covid pandemic and this announcement gave us an extra reason to raise a glass.
In speeches, former shareholders David Cooling and Gary Carvosso paid tribute to Michael & Shirley Cooling who both passed away before the pandemic.
It was Michael who took on the half acre Chislehurst site from his father in the 1960s and developed it into a profitable business before relocating to the now famous 14-acre site in Knockholt in 1990. Coinciding with the change of ownership, Gary Carvosso (formerly MD) has now become Chairman, I have taken up the new role of Vice Chairman, and Dwayne Ross has been promoted to Managing Director. Ian Hazon continues as Production & Operations Director and my brother, David Cooling, has now left the business.
It is, arguably, the biggest change in the history of our third-generation company that will hopefully result in no obvious changes.
I am very pleased that, after the turmoil that the pandemic threw at us, a new level of stability has been secured for the long term.

Succession is always one of the hardest things for a family business and is a subject that has been discussed many times at Coolings over the last twenty years or so.
