Dear Friends,

I was extremely proud to have been elected as Vice President of the International Garden Centre Association back in the Autumn.

My father was one of the founding members of the fledgling organisation back in the 1960s when most members were in Germany, Switzerland, Holland & Scandinavia. Now there are representatives from all over the developed world including Australia, Japan & China.

The first International Garden Centre Congress that I attended was in 1980 when most member businesses were plant growers who sold directly to the public along with the tools & fertilisers to help customers get the best from their gardens all in one place. Nowadays, of course, the term ‘Garden Centre’ means so much more and I look forward to furthering the learning from international co-operation.

To all those of you who took up gardening for the first time in 2020 do please persevere! Although the intermittent sunshine interspersed with lots of rain was ideal in helping new shrubs & perennials, the weather in 2021 was not good for many crops, especially tomatoes. My own efforts were a write off due to blight and I know many others suffered the same fate. Hopefully we will see a more normal weather pattern through 2022.

With the transition to electric car ownership, there is some concern that many urban front gardens may be turned into driveways to allow electric cars to be charged without the trip hazard of cables across the pavement.

Fortunately, there are alternatives to tarmac that allow the rain to permeate and plants to feature strongly.

Finally, I am proud that Coolings supported the Harvest Flower Festival at St Katharine’s Church in Knockholt. This event brought many people and local organisations together again after all the disruption that the pandemic has thrown at us. If there is one positive that we can take from the last two years, it is that our community is important to us all.

As we start the new year with many tempting gardening offers, we look forward to helping you create your new normal in your own garden in the seasons ahead.

Growing is our passion at Coolings, and it’s important to us that we do this with minimal impact on the environment. Here are just a few of the things we’re doing to help protect our planet...

Recycling

We recycle all of the glass bottles from our restaurant and cafés, all our plastic pots and packaging, and more than 10 Transit vans worth of scrap metal each year.

Composting

We compost more than 3 shipping containers worth of green waste each year which we use on-site and donate to local community planting projects.

Harvesting

We harvest approximately 6 Olympic-sized swimming pools of rainwater to use to water plants on-site.

Growing thousands of plants on our nurseries keeping our plant miles to a minimum.

Installing motion detectors in toilets and offices to save electricity.

Providing glass, paper and clothing recycling banks at Coolings The Gardener’s Garden Centre and Coolings Lifestyle for the public to use.

Installing an environmental computer to control the atmosphere in our glasshouse making it more environmentally efficient.

Using solar panels to generate electricity at our Coolings Lifestyle site and installing solar panels at our Rushmore Hill site in 2022.
