Eves Family Enjoys Life Out of Political Spotlight

From the Publisher's Desk

A Dream 14 Years in the Making The 2018 Boston Red Sox will be remembered for many of their amazing achievements from winning 108 games to their incredible playoff run (I wish I could write how they won another World Series title, but as of this writing, the playoffs were a few days away…) But I will especially remember this season as the one where I was finally able to share the experience of watching the Red Sox at Fenway Park with my son, Patrick. For us, it was a 14-year dream that was finally realized when we set out for the stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in mid-September. The Red Sox were taking on the dreaded New York Mets and we were surrounded by a sea of blue and orange clad Mets fans who had made the trip up from Queens to Boston. We managed to score some last-minute standing room tickets that allowed us to float around Fenway and enjoy the game from several vantage points. Oddly enough, many of the Mets fans were very nice to my son, who is on the Autism spectrum. When I told them this was his first game and that he really wanted to go, they greeted my son and were genuinely happy for us. Fenway Park security personnel also gave Patrick a first game button and some baseball cards of some of the Red Sox players. It was also a day that I had previously thought might never happen. When my wife, Mary, and I learned we were going to have a baby boy following her ultrasound at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, I remembered I felt like we flew over the Tobin Bridge in our car as we headed home. I immediately imagined all of the Red Sox games we would attend like my father and I did so many times in the 1970s. I saw myself teaching Patrick how to play baseball and rooting for him during his Little League games like the other parents.

During the game I couldn’t help but think about what it was like when my dad took me to my first Red Sox game in 1973. I was 9 years old, and Fenway was larger than life in every respect. The Green Monster looked gargantuan, and I couldn’t believe that anyone, whether it was Yaz, Pudge Fisk, Jim Rice or Fred Lynn, could hit a homerun over the Monstah. When Patrick and I went to Fenway, all of the stars perfectly aligned. We had a picture perfect day of blue skies and comfortable fall weather which allowed Fenway and the Boston skyline to blend in unmatched brilliance. The hotdogs, pretzels and popcorn tasted heavenly. The video on the centerfield jumbotron was crystal clear and the game was the backdrop. When we made our way to the State Street Pavilion section above the third base line, some Mets fans allowed us to watch the remainder of the game in two empty seats their friends had given up when they decided to head back to their hotel.

Throughout the entire afternoon, I was just so grateful that we were able to experience this wonderful day together as father and son. Who knows, maybe one day Patrick will take his son or daughter to see the Red Sox at Fenway and he will experience the joy that fathers have felt for generations. But all of that changed when Patrick was 2 ½. Patrick was diagnosed with Autism and we realized that our life as a family was going to be different than we had envisioned. But we never stopped believing in our son and that he could experience the world around him as much as possible. One of the things that changed Patrick’s life and our lives was the discovery that noise reducing headphones could make it easier for him to attend concerts and large-scale events like baseball games. Now 14 and a high school freshman, Patrick wears his blue headphones all the time, and they help him manage his environment so that he can go to school dances and places like Walt Disney World, New York City and the countless other places we have traveled with our son. Thanks to those headphones and all of the amazing support he has received from so many people since we first embarked on the journey

November Feature

Far from Augusta, former Maine House Speaker Mark Eves and His Family Embrace the Quiet Life BY ROBERT COOK | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL D. WILSON

As Maine voters get ready to choose a new governor in November, a former candidate and his family are content to spend more quality time together at their North Berwick home. On a recent Sunday evening, former Maine House Speaker Mark Eves, his wife Laura and their three children, Elaina, 13, Lucas, 11, and Naomi, 9, demonstrated what life is like outside of the political spotlight.

Eves, 41, and Laura Eves, 42, first met when they were working toward their master’s degrees in marriage and family therapy at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky in 2000. A year later, they were married. What brought them to Maine was the fact that Eves’ parents had retired in York County. Maine’s beauty, four seasons and the quality of life appealed to the couple right away.

The children made the rounds to make sure the family’s goats, chickens and pigs were all set for the night. In just one week, the family planned to head to the Cumberland County Fair, where Lucas, a member of the Cumberland County 4H Swiners Club, will showcase his pigs, including Peaches, a smaller racing pig.

“We just got up here and felt like we were home,” Eves recalls.

After Mark Eves lost his bid to win the Democratic nomination for Governor in June, the family regrouped and welcomed their life after politics by taking a summer vacation out west where they spent time with other family members on the Oregon coast. They also spent a few days on Star Island off the coast of Rye, N.H. Eves is in his second year as the CEO of Woodford’s Family Services in Westbrook, which supports children and adults with disabilities. The 600-employee agency serves 2,000 families in 11 Maine counties and has an annual operating budget of $30 million. Woodford’s is scheduled to open a new branch office in Kennebunk in the near future. Laura Eves is the Head of School at Childlight Montessori School in nearby Berwick. Their children and their home, which is quiet and private, located a few miles off Route 4, gives the couple great joy and peace of mind. “This is our home base where we like to return,” Eves says. It is a far cry from the Maine Legislature in Augusta, where Eves spent four years as House Speaker and another four years as a state representative. Even more challenging than his battles with outgoing Gov. Paul LePage was maintaining a healthy balance for his family. When asked why he decided to get into Maine politics, Eves jokes, “I still don’t know.”

They also realized that Maine would be a great place to have a family. All of their children have a great appreciation for Maine’s agricultural heritage, including Lucas, who raises pigs and sells them at auction. In 2003, Eves worked as a home-based family therapist for Sweetser and worked with families in crisis in western York County towns like Acton, Newfields and Parsonsfield. He eventually started his own practice in Sanford when he caught the political bug in 2006. He recalls how he helped another candidate run for a Maine House seat and attended his first Maine Caucus at North Berwick Town Hall. “I just saw it as a way that I could help people.” When he ran for the House in 2008, “me and Barack Obama were one the ballot for the first time, and that was really exciting.” When he entered the House in 2009, Elaina was almost 3, Lucas was about a year old and Naomi had not been born yet. “We had a really good support system,” Laura Eves recalls. Eves adds his parents were able to babysit the kids while he and his wife were working. Eves found his work in Augusta to be very fulfilling. “It’s exciting. You feel like you are doing good work, but the sacrifices can be overwhelming if you don’t have a good support system,” he says. In 2012 when he was speaker, his children were in school and involved in activities like sports and ballet dancing. “That family balance got harder when I was House Speaker,” he recalls. Eves would often travel 100 miles from North Berwick to Augusta and 100 miles home each day, spending

A Book, a Medal and a Great Cause: Local Author Wins Silver Medal BY JENNIFER SAUNDERS Susan Rogers got some very exciting news in September: Her book, “Posh Celebrations,” had been awarded a silver medal by the 2018 Living Now Book Awards. The awards program was created 10 years ago by Independent Publisher and The Jenkins Group to bring increased recognition to the best lifestyle books published this year and to their creators. “I am very excited about this national recognition of my book, which acknowledges the importance of pets and celebrates the love, laughter and friendship they add to our lives,” Rogers says. “My treasured pets have taught me how to celebrate life.” And her book gives back to pets that haven’t been as fortunate as her own through a fund at a local shelter. “My company, Properly Posh Pets™, which is headquartered in Kennebunkport, creates and sells pet party supplies including Posh Celebrations, our party guidebook,” Rogers explains. “A portion of company profits is donated to The Posh Fund at the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) of Kennebunk to help animals in need of medical care.” “This year’s medalists cover a full spectrum of topics and styles,” says Jim Barnes, awards director for the program, highlighting “Posh Celebrations” as representative of how “reading good books helps us achieve the good life.” Rogers received her award in the animals/pets category, and this year’s award theme was, “Eat, Drink and Be Merry.”

The Eves worked extremely hard to not allow any negative stories or stressful times from Augusta to affect their homelife. Oftentimes, they would find ways to inject humor to make light of it.

“Adding the ‘Be Merry’ element is silver medalist, ‘Posh Celebrations: Whimsical Themed Parties to Celebrate Your Pet,’ written by Susan Rogers — with help from her furry co-author,” Barnes writes in the award announcement. “Posh designed this book for the busy person who loves to give parties and loves their pets but doesn’t want to work like a dog in order to throw a fabulous party!”

When Eves decided to run for governor, it wasn’t a decision that the family took lightly. Laura Eves recalls that she and her husband discussed it at length as they sat on some rocks overlooking the ocean. “I supported Mark because I believed he was the right man for the job,” she says.

In her book, Rogers offers ideas for a year of parties celebrating pet birthdays and — in keeping with her commitment to the AWS — adoptions. Party themes range from favorite locations, like a beach or vineyard, to special occasions like Valentine’s Day and Halloween.

Around the kitchen table, the Eves asked their kids to list their own pros and cons about their dad possibly winning the Blaine House. Their biggest plus would be that everyone would have their own bedroom. The biggest negative would be that they would have to change schools and leave their friends. They also wanted to know how they could bring all of their animals, which included two cats, four goats and a coop full of chickens, to the Blaine House. The children understood why their dad wanted to run, and Eves had often brought Lucas and Elaina to Augusta so they could be with him in the House chamber. Lucas would sometimes help him pound the gavel before reading the rolls.

“Original illustrations add sparkle to the book, which includes over 90 pages of recipes, cocktails, decorations, gift bag ideas and more,” Rogers adds.

three-and-half hours each day on the road to fulfill his public service. “I tried to come home every night.”

Rogers set up The Posh Fund on Feb. 14 as a tribute to her beloved pup Posh, who battled cancer and passed away shortly after his 12th

birthday, to help pets in need of medical care at the AWS. “All contributions to The Posh Fund will be used for medical care through the Community Veterinary Clinic at AWS,” Rogers notes. The clinic was established this past January as a full-service, state-of-theart facility providing care to shelter pets and reduced-cost veterinary care to income-qualified pet owners in Southern Maine. The goal of the clinic is to keep pets in loving homes, safe from surrender or euthanasia, due to treatable medical concerns and without concern for the size of the owner’s bank account,” Rogers explains. “Support from The Posh Fund will hopefully help many beloved family pets and shelter pets receive necessary medical care.” To get a copy of “Posh Celebrations” or to learn more about The Posh Fund, visit www.properlyposhpets.com.

Eves was disappointed that he did not capture the Democratic nomination in June, but both he and his wife are happy they entered the race. “We took a run at it. We’re glad we did,” he says, adding, “For now, we are happy to be home for dinners, and I can be much more involved in their (the children’s) daily activities.” So what advice does Eves offer to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Janet Mills or Republican candidate Shawn Moody? “Put family first. That is the most important thing.” Laura Eves adds that it is very important “to continue to ground yourself and your family. The bubble of politics and Augusta can blind you to what life is really like.” 6

Rolls Out New License Plates

November’s not Just for Turkey

BY SEAN MURPHY The Maine Lighthouse Trust has received approval from the Maine Secretary of State to launch a campaign for Maine’s first lighthouse specialty license plate. The Maine Lighthouse Trust is required to have 2000 Maine residents with active vehicle registrations pre-order the new license plate prior to the Secretary of State drafting legislation and presenting it to the Legislature for final approval. The cost of the lighthouse specialty license plate is $25.00. The Maine Lighthouse Trust will receive $10 from the initial purchase and $10 per annual renewal.

with this Hearty Soup

With Thanksgiving just right around the corner, everybody is preparing their menus. For sure, turkey is on the top of the list. Well, in our home the turkey is not always the main star. In my family, we grew up with usually a turkey on the Thanksgiving dinner as well as a ham. Choices are great, but the ham was usually on our Thanksgiving menu not just for leftovers but for that succulent creamy pea soup my gram made from the hambone. Anyone who thinks they do not like pea soup has never tried this recipe! This version of pea soup is not only a great starter dish but is hearty enough to be a meal on its own! With hearty fall root vegetables and a sweet salty ham, this recipe is sure to be a hit at your family’s gathering. So, let's get this soup started.

INGREDIENTS: •

Large hambone

1 lb. bag of dried split peas

3 cups beef broth

2 large carrots

1 medium yellow onion

2 tbsp. pepper (I use white pepper)

2 tbsp. dried thyme

2 cubes chicken bouillon

3 cups cubed ham

METHOD:

DEB’S TIPS:

First and foremost, you are going to rinse your split peas and give them a good cleaning with room temperature water. The reasoning behind this is that these are foreign, raw products and may contain non-consumable particles.

1.

You then are going to place them in a pot and cover them with water to about an inch or two over the peas.

When buying parmesan cheese by the block, always ask the deli department for a chunk of the rind. This can be used in pea soup or for any soup to add a big punch of flavor.

2.

Bring them to a boil, and then remove them from the heat and set aside.

Place your hambone in the six cups of water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for approximately an hour and a half. This is the step that will give your soup all its flavor.

When cooking a ham, always keep in mind the sodium content it contains. I usually omit all sodium when I'm cooking with a ham.

Remove the bone from the water, and place the split peas in the same pot. Let the peas simmer in the water for an hour or until they become soft and creamy.

Once the peas start breaking down, add the chopped carrots and onions, cubed ham and all of your spices. Continue simmering for an hour, and then it is ready to eat!

8

The Maine Lighthouse Trust will distribute the funds to Maine’s lighthouse community for preservation, restoration and education/awareness of Maine’s iconic lighthouses. It is estimated the lighthouse plate will raise in excess of $200,000 per year for Maine’s lighthouse community.

BY LAURA SNYDER SMITH It’s the most wonderful time of the year … almost. In anticipation of December and the Christmas gift-giving season, we’ve rolled out our annual benefit Holiday Auction in November! Think dining gift certificates galore, for example, and a picnic lunch at Goat Island, a dozen lobsters, handyman and home improvement services, spa-getaway weekends, Red Sox tickets, catering services, concert tickets, massage, car detailing, gift baskets, media subscriptions and so much more. The online bidding is now live through 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12; prizes will be available for pickup starting Nov. 13. We save the top item for live auction, which is part of our November After Hours, this month on Wednesday, Nov. 14. This is both a fundraiser for your local nonprofit chamber, but also a great member showcase of local goods and services. It's also a great way to do some holiday shopping for a good cause! Because ours is an online auction, folks from all over the county view our auction ... and we ship out a good percentage of the winning items. We have more than 120 businesses donating awesome good, services and “experiences,” and auction is one of the Chamber's major fundraisers that helps support its mission to serve local businesses, residents and tourists of our three towns, one community. Like to shop? The retail fun continues in November with our annual Pajama Shopping Day on Saturday, Nov. 25. Roll yourself out of bed and come

as you are — pajamas are the dress of choice! While the rest of the country calls the Saturday after Thanksgiving “Small Business Saturday,” we call it Pajama Shopping Day! This third annual event at participating shops in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel starts early, like 7 a.m. when the deals are the best. Specials sales and activities continue throughout the day, but the idea is to get out early and make a marathon day of it! Meet your friends, gather the family, and get out to shop local and support local business! That night, of course, is also Kennebunk’s Annual Downtown Tree-Lighting Ceremony, so it will be a full day from sun-up to sun-down!

As always, you can find us at the Chamber, 16 Water St., Kennebunk. Stop by anytime, follow us on facebook and Instagram and be sure to join us — in your pajamas! Thanksgiving

I was only in my late teens when the candidate’s campaign strategies were being formed in the large foyer, the solarium, the dining room and living room of “my house.” (Aside: I put “my house” in quotes because really the rectory is owned by the church. As a kid, though, it was my house.) These campaign meetings at the rectory had visitors from the finest think tanks and universities advising the candidate on domestic and worldwide issues. History tells the rest of the story: Ronald Reagan grabbed the mic at a New Hampshire debate and bellowed, “Don’t you turn off this microphone … I paid for this mic!” It and other attributes catapulted Reagan to the front of the pack. Wisely, he picked HW for veep.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, as I recall, the president’s chief of protocol arrived at our home early in the morning to explain our role in greeting the leader of the free world. Like George himself, the instructions were low-key, easy-going but very, very cool. We were to stay by the ocean side of the house, with the press corps 300 feet away, and wait for the chopper to land. After the rotors came to a stop and the marine opened the hatch and came down to attention at the foot of the narrow stairs, we — mom, dad and I — were to begin our walk toward the helicopter.

As we waited, I could see all the cameras focused on us, wondering who the heck these folks were. I had a quick window into what rock-star life could be like. Then a faint “wap-wap-wap” could be heard in the southern sky toward York. Slowly but surely, the behemoth of a helicopter came in with its nose high and its tail low and its rotors blowing up a storm on our gravel driveway.

So to have a quick eight years later President Bush landing Marine One on the very site he launched his presidential aspirations was a thrilling victor’s welcome for those who knew of the machinations behind the scenes.

'Whirly-Bird' Kennebunkport Thanksgiving

Left Lasting Impression BY JAMES H.K. BRUNER | PHOTO BY ROBERT DENNIS This summer had me reminiscing about neat happenings in the Kennebunks while I rolled out my first novel, “The Bike Cop in the Greater Weight of Evidence.” As I told stories to the book clubs and at library events as part of the Give-away Take-away book tour, I realized how history gets lost if not retold. Obviously, some history is best kept buried; but some history, like this story, bears repeating to keep alive the very special memories that make the ‘Port the unique spot in the world that it clearly occupies. Not sure of the year without resorting to Google, but it was George H.W. Bush’s first Thanksgiving as president. I’m quite sure a big white turkey had its death sentence ceremoniously commuted, pardoned and otherwise acquitted by the president on the lawn of the White House, after which George and Barbara presumably boarded the Marine One helicopter, headed for Kennebunkport. This was at a time before the helipad had been constructed at Walker’s Point a.k.a. Bush Compound. Who could know the logistics behind the decision to land the military whirly-bird on the rectory lawn of St. Ann’s Chapel on Ocean Avenue, a quarter mile west of the president’s residence, but it fit for several reasons; one of which not that many people know about. As the one of five sons of Laman H. Bruner, the rector of St. Ann’s, my Maine residence in the summer consisted of the palatial cottage on the ocean next to the church. I was glad to be joining mom and dad for Thanksgiving in Maine and ecstatic to have the president arrive on our lawn. Logistics and symbolic significance were the last things on my mind as I watched the presidential press crew start to set up at the outdoor altar on the front lawn. Of course, logistically it fit, as the rectory lawn is the closest flat surface near Walker’s Point, but even more fitting was that the landing of President George H.W. Bush on St. Ann’s lawn was a symbolic milestone of returning to the spot where he had launched his presidential aspirations. Not many people know that some eight years earlier (again, I stay away 12

from Google for details), candidate Bush prepared for his bid for the Republican nomination for president in the living room of the rectory.

After the blades ceased and the marine stood at the bottom of the open stairway, President Bush gave the classic salute to the press and looked our direction. Our handler motioned us to walk to the helicopter to welcome our visitors. Mom and dad first: hugs, shakes, slaps on the back. I shook the president’s hand, then turned to Barbara to give a hug. C. Fred, who was the Bush’s cocker spaniel on a leash held by Barbara, was excited, too. So much so that when I hugged the first lady, the first canine proceeded to run in circles around my and Barbara’s legs to the point we were tethered in a very awkward way. You could hear the cameras go into a frenzy of clicking and zinging. That was my Thanksgiving of whirly-bird on the Rectory lawn.
