There are many ways to get out and enjoy

the water this summer that include everything from jet skis and scenic cruises to surf boards and even parasailing water skiing.

Like many fellow Mainers, I have always loved the water, and I welcome every chance I get to spend some time on the ocean and beautiful lakes. Above all else, I love sailing aboard authentic Maine windjammers and schooners.

Since my wife, Mary, first introduced me to my first sailing experience aboard the Surprise in Camden Harbor more than 20 years ago, I make it a point to take at least one sail each summer. This summer, I would love to share this experience with my son, Patrick, who is now 14 going on high school student.

Just watching the wind catch the sail against the symmetry of the rigging to naturally glide across the water is a unique experience.

Over the years, I have enjoyed day sails in a myriad of ports of call including Newport, R.I., Hyannisport, Lake Champlain in Vermont, Lake Winnipesaukee, Ogunquit, Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, Camden, Bar Harbor and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and every one of them was special. Each sail transports me to the past and gives me a glimpse into the world of sailing when the first Europeans first set foot on the Maine coast and Maine islands. Just as it was for them, sailing continues to be a real adventure that is meant to be savored and shared.

sail on the Eleanor last summer, Capt. Rich Woodman explained the Eleanor was constructed over a twoyear period at his shop to be a replica of the type of vessels that were built in Kennebunk, making it a vital link to the area’s rich shipbuilding legacy.

Some captains would share stories about how they always loved sailing and finally had an opportunity to leave their day jobs and devote themselves to it up full time by taking out tourists on summer day sails in the Northeast and spending their winters down in Florida or the Carribean. Captain Jack and his wife, Barbara, who owned and operated the Surprise in Camden for many years, told me they were former school teachers who lived and worked in Marblehead, Mass., before they moved to the Midcoast with their kids, bought the Surprise and charted a new course for the rest of their lives.

Over the years, I have seen my share of Atlantic seals sunbathing on rocky shoals, porpoises jumping in and out of the blue ocean water and seabirds flying overhead. On one trip out of Ogunquit, a few showers had just left the area before we set sail which yielded one of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen that was comprised of a swirl of evening clouds of fire along with orange and turquoise accents. It was truly Heaven on Earth, and I am so grateful that I was able to witness it and that I remember it so vividly.

James H.K. Bruner Invites Readers to Port Talbot, Maine

bedtime sagas for his six children as they grew, Bruner has taken pen to paper and created a fictional Maine community and a detective story that’s already winning over readers and reviewers alike in “The Bike Cop in the Greater Weight of Evidence.”

As Delia Stanley writes in her review for Clarion, Bruner’s first novel “combines the right amount of humor, politics and suspense for a fun detective tale with an irresistible lead.” Bruner laughs, saying he’s not sure whether Stanley is referring to the book’s opening or its main character as the “lead,” but he hopes readers will agree both are irresistible.

“Between me, and you and your readers, yes, it is patterned after Kennebunkport, Kennebunk and Arundel. When I'm in Rockport or Boothbay, I reserve the right to spin it differently ... it's the beauty of fiction,” he says, with the humor that’s acclaimed by his novel’s reviewers coming through in conversation.

He shared the book with Kennebunk historian Kathy Ostrander Roberts, and her reaction is shared among the books endorsements: “James shows us that nostalgia is a whole new genre! He takes us to the places we have been in our lives but hijacks us into a plot that is out of this world.”

In her review, Clarion’s Stanley describes Bruner’s main character, Digger Davenport, as “a New York forensics student who spends his summers in Port Talbot, Maine. When he lands the coveted position of bike cop with the town’s police department, he thinks that he will be directing traffic and handing out parking tickets. Instead, Digger finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery that whips the town into an emotional and political fervor. Digger must use his budding detective skills to solve the case before an innocent man is put in jail.”

There is humor, mystery and nostalgia throughout “The Bike Cop,” but there’s also a lot more. “This is a book that addresses racial inequalities.

Instead of this just being a feel-good book about Kennebunkport, there is a real conflict: Northerners vs. Southerners. Local townies vs. rich summer folk. Black vs. white. Political expedience vs. justice. All of these things are at play,” Bruner explains.

James H.K. Bruner has been a summer resident of the Kennebunks since he was a young boy.

“In 1964, my father, mom, brothers and I came in our greenish Ford station wagon and stayed at The Nonantum while Dad was interviewed by the vestry at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church out on Ocean Avenue,” he recalls, his storyteller’s voice bringing that day to life as he recalls how their parked car was totaled in an accident at just about the time that his father was hired for his post with the seasonal seaside church.

“We were stuck in Kennebunkport in 1964 and never left! Dad was the rector of St. Ann’s from1965 for approximately 30 years, and we were privileged to live in two different rectories of St. Ann’s, both in the Cape Arundel section of Kennebunkport.”

More than five decades have passed, and Bruner is now a successful attorney who has raised six children with his wife Gretchen, but he has never forgotten those child4

hood walks to the church, which was then bounded by hedges, or climbing up to peer at the estate on the other side. “It was a humongous house on that point of St. Ann’s and had about 12 acres of manicured lawn,” he recalls.

Bruner says he’s especially thankful for the support his book has received from its first readers. “I’m so grateful to the endorsers of the book who allowed their names to be put on the back of my book,” Bruner says, which include New York Times bestselling authors Dorothy Walker Bush Koch, Lee Woodruff and Peter Schweizer. “To have them come alongside little old me and say what they did is so humbling.”

In the mid-1970s, following the owner’s passing, that estate went up for auction, and Herbie Walker of Walker’s Point fame bought the property, giving it to the church to serve as the new rectory​and the famed Outdoor Altar. When Bruner's​father received that call from Walker at his winter home in Albany, New York, in the fall, the family turned around and headed right back to Kennebunkport to have Thanksgiving in the new rectory, one of the few winterized summer “cottages” in the area. "Dad got out the clippers and down came the hedges immediately,” Bruner says.

Help the Brick Store Museum Remember 1968,

‘The Year That Rocked the World'

Fifty years ago this year, 1968 became the year of revolt.

It was a year of seismic political and social change across the globe, and in America in particular.

Modern historians have noted the passing of 1968 as “The Year That Rocked the World,” “The Year that Changed History,” and “The Year of Unraveling,” among other things. The country was hurting so badly that by the end of the year, when the crew of Apollo 8 took the first photo of the Earth rising over the Moon, a stranger wrote to them very simply: “Thank you Apollo 8. You saved 1968.”

Leading up to the year’s 50th anniversary in 2018 (yes, it’s been 50 years!), the Museum has been working tirelessly to locate artifacts, archival materials and

personal histories relating to how life was in the late 1960s. Because many of us do not consider the 1960s“history”yet, not much has been collected before now. In fact, the Museum has a deficit of modern historical items past the 1920s. The past 100 years of local and national history is spotty when it comes to three-dimensional objects and personal journals, letters and photographs.

Through the Museum’s outreach, a copy of The Portland Press Herald printed December 26, 1968 recently arrived at the Museum from a thoughtful donor.

Her mother had kept several newspapers from the time period. This paper features a “Top Stories of 1968” article, like a year-in-review. Prior to the December Apollo 8 mission, the article says, the top stories of 1968 were: •

Robert Kennedy assassinated.

Martin Luther King assassinated.

•

LBJ announces he won’t run for re-election.

•

Presidential election, campaign.

•

Czechoslovakia occupied by Russia.

•

Vietnam War continues; peace talks start.

•

Pueblo crew captured by North Korea.

•

Heart transplant operations.

•

Civil rights riots and black militancy.

•

Jacqueline Kennedy weds Aristotle Onassis.

This list only scratches the surface of the changes that took place in America. Those that were part of the Baby-Boomer generation witnessed college protests at school; were nervous about the draft; and saw a distinct difference in opinion with their parents about the Vietnam War. Think about the music that came out in that time period – it still affects how we understand that era today.

The Museum will be opening 1968, our summer exhibition, at the end of June. Before that time, we will be gathering stories and histories from our 1968 Discussion Nights (check our website for times, www.brickstoremuseum.org), and hope to reach those that might be willing to donate or loan artifacts to the exhibition. Add Some Summer Spice

with this Chicken Sausage Gumbo Dish

Eat This, Not That:

Making Healthy Choices at 4th of July Picnics

Why is it that so many of the holidays featuring fatty, sugary foods fall in the warm months, when we want to wear cooler, less restrictive clothing and be active? Summertime events like birthday and pool parties, Memorial Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day and Labor Day all pose potential junk food gauntlets to navigate, but the 4th of July is particularly treacherous: cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, chips and dip. Before you know it, your top button is going to declare independence from your favorite pair of jean shorts.

Although there are many gumbo recipes out there, mine is a little different with the thickening and the spices that I use. This recipe — like most of mine — is one of my husband's favorites. It is a hearty, tasteful bowl of goodness that looks like a soup but eats like a stew. On that note, with no further ado, let's get cooking!

INGREDIENTS: 3 lbs. cooked chicken

1 cup of kernelled corn

2 lbs. smoked sausage

2 tbsp Cayenne pepper

5 cups chicken broth

2 tbsp smoked paprika

1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)

1 tsp red pepper flakes

2 cups frozen sliced okra

1 tbsp white pepper

1 red bell pepper

¾ cup instant rice

1 green bell pepper

3 tbsp of olive oil

3 cloves of garlic

Salt and pepper for every step

METHOD: First you're going to cube your chicken and sausage and brown in the pan with a tablespoon of olive oil. While that is cooking, you are going to dice up your peppers and your garlic and then add to the sausage and chicken until the peppers become soft. In a medium-sized pot, you are going to place your chicken broth and diced tomatoes and okra as well as the corn. Start to simmer, and add your spices. Once your peppers and garlic have softened, you are then going to add the chicken and sausage and pepper mixture to the pot with the chicken broth and tomatoes. Do not drain the juices; that is all your flavoring.

Now some traditional gumbos start off with a roux to thicken them, but

I like to use rice the starch from the rice. It’s all the thickener you need. Most gumbos do not have tomatoes either, but I love the texture, the color and of course the nutrition that the tomatoes add to this recipe. Once you have allowed the gumbo to simmer for 30 minutes, add the uncooked rice and finish cooking for five minutes. I serve mine with a side of cornbread. Enjoy!

DEB’S TIPS: 1.

Tomatoes are one of the few sources that you can get lycopene from, which contains a red carotene antioxidant that is very helpful for men’s heart health. I add tomatoes in as many recipes as I can for this reason alone, whether incorporated in the recipe or just serve fresh as a side.

When making any chicken recipes that require cooked chicken, it's not a bad thing to cheat and buy a rotisserie-cooked chicken at your local grocery store because — let's all face it — life is busy and any shortcut is a welcome.

3.

When cubing or dicing raw meat, always placing the meet in the freezer for five to 10 minutes before you're going to cut it and you get even dices and slices that are much easier to cut.

You can still have fun and partake in 4th of July picnics without feeling overly full and sluggish, just follow these easy swaps the next time you find yourself having a stare-down with the food table.

Eat this: Oil and vinegar dressed salads.

Not that: Mayonnaise dressed salads.

Why? Mayonnaise is high in unhealthy fats and artificial ingredients.

Olive oil, on the other hand, is heralded as one of earth’s healthiest fats, due to being low in saturated fat and high in antioxidants. Plus, mayonnaise that has been sitting at room temperature (or under the hot sun) too long, while it may not kill you, might not taste as fresh as an oil and vinegar-based dressing.

Eat this: Carrot sticks and hummus.

Not that: Potato chips and sour cream dip.

Why? Potato chips are deep fried, calorie-dense and high in added salt. Dunk that into a tub of caloric chip dip and well, you do the math.

Chickpeas (found in hummus) are high in protein and fiber and carrots contain beta-carotene and antioxidants, making this option a more nutrient-dense choice.

Drink this: Sangria.

Not that: Margarita.

Why? Oh, the sweet and sour tang of a margarita rimmed with salt. It tastes delicious, but is it worth it? Most margaritas are made with sour mix which contains high fructose corn syrup or cane syrup, food dye and chemicals. Though tequila itself isn’t terrible for you, it picks up tons of salt from the rim as you sip, which will cause water retention and only make you thirstier. Go for sangria instead. White wine contains more antioxidants than red wine and many sangrias have fruit added. If you must have tequila, mix one ounce with the juice of a fresh lime and agave nectar or honey for sweetener. Top with ice and club soda and thank me later.

Discovering Our Past part of the framework of early American colonization, when did the two cultures first come together and did that contact period go?

If we are to find the answers to these questions then the time to do it is now. The reason why some artifacts have been found is the result of erosion. Whole parts is Stage Island have been washed away since colonial times. The chance that more degradation of the shoreline will take place is ever present. That's why we are acting now. Who knows what will be found. Our story could well be one of great regional and national significance in the early history of our nation. The more we dig into our past the more we will know, and that digging is underway.

This summer we are excited to host our archaeological field school in Stage Harbor. It will be conducted by the Cape Porpoise Archeological Alliance (CPAA). The collaborative group includes the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, the Brick Store Museum, Tim Spahr (Principle Investigator, archaeologist, and Gemma Hudgell (consulting archaeologist).

The purpose of CPAA is to conduct scientific research on the islands and intertidal zone of Cape Porpoise Harbor.

The properties owned by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust have been forever set aside because they have been woven into the fabric of those special places around which the beauty, character and history of our community has evolved. Each of them has their own special story to tell, a story that recovered Native American artifacts proves dates back thousands of years before European contact.

As today's stewards of the land, the KCT wants to find out more about those who once lived here. We want to honor them by learning about where they lived, how they lived and what they most valued. Then, through our Trust in Education program, we want to pass their story on as another chapter in the tale of our town, another chance to deepen our understanding of those who were stewards before us, those who passed on this place that we now call home.

The KCT has started its archaeological search on the islands of Cape Porpoise. It was to those islands that the first European fishermen travelled in the early part of the 17th century, using them as their home base as

they harvested the rich fisheries of the Gulf of Maine. They would cure their catch on fish "stages" before packing it aboard their ships for the long journey home. Stage Island and Stage Harbor derived their name as a result of this process. At first these early fishermen just spent the summer months on the island, heading home before the harsh and uncertain conditions of winter. Eventually, however, there were those who decided to brave the season, and in that effort a new Maine village was born. Who were those first settlers? How many of them were there? What were their homes like and how well did they survive those first winters?

These are just a few of the many questions we'd love to find answers to.

Cattail will be harvested using stone tools and the weir built entirely of the plant’s stalks, leaf blades and shealth. Fortunately, Montano points out, YCH has a very different philosophy regarding revenue: “York County Helicopters is pay-as-you-go,” he explains. “If a student decides to discontinue or take break from flight training at any time, there are zero penalties.”

Unlike other flight schools, he notes, there are also no contracts locking students in with a long-term commitment. In fact, Montano suggests that the biggest difference between YCH and other flight schools is the flexible financing arrangement.

“As a smaller company, we have a much lower overhead than other larger companies, which gives us the ability to charge less per flight hour,” he observes. “At the same time, being a smaller company gives us the ability to offer a more unique, personalized and customized flight-training experience while maintaining the highest standards for our students and pilots.”

Enter York County Helicopters (YCH), a local outfit with nationally accredited instructors and nearly infinite horizons.

Based just 14 miles west of Kennebunk’s beaches at the Sanford Regional Airport, YCH can give thrill-seekers and transporters the instruction and support they need to raise things up — including their heart rates — quickly and safely.

Heading the talented team is Parker Montano a certified flight instructor.

And while he admits that he is not sure how long the program has been around, Montano has strong ties to the Pine Tree State and years of experience. “I got involved in aviation at early age because it was something that had always captivated me,” Montano explains. “No matter where I was or what I was doing, if I heard an aircraft in the sky, I had to look for it.”

Taking his first flight lesson on his 13th birthday, Montano attended the Maine ACE aviation camp that following summer and ended up returning for many years thereafter, both as a camper and volunteer.

“My Boy Scout Eagle project was even aviation-based,” he recalls.

As for helicopters, Montano first went straight up in one when he was 17 and was immediately hooked. Completing his initial flight training at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona, Montano continued his training in New Hampshire before coming home to Maine.

Montano says YCH’s goal is to support and encourage those who dream of flight.

“York County Helicopters believes that anyone with an interest in flying should schedule an introductory flight with us,” he says, explaining those introductory sessions provide the opportunity to meet an instructor, ask questions and, most importantly, experience an actual flight. Once the relationship has been established, Montano and his colleagues work with each individual customer to create a training program that is right for them.

And who are those students? “We do not have a ‘typical’ student,” Montano says, noting that while some come to YCH to start their own careers in flight, others are looking forward to retirement and want to pursue something new and exciting. Still others are part-time flyers who take to the skies when not taking down notes from their professors or memos from their bosses.

“The only thing all our students are guaranteed to share,” Montano says, “is a love of helicopters.”

“At York County Helicopters, our students begin to take the controls on day-one of flight training with their instructor,” Montano notes. However, he points out that as much fun as flying is, ground training is vitally important and a major focus at YCH. “Ground training covers topics such as helicopter systems, how the helicopter flies and the rules in place to keep us safe in the air,” Montano explains. “This is done through one-on-one instruction and studying materials on your own.”

with Capt. John's Charter this Summer

BY KATELYN MICHAUD After 33 years of working in technology, Captain John Ellis III decided it was time for a change.

While he grew up in Massachusetts, he spent his summers on Estes Lakes in Sanford, following in his Coast Guard father’s footsteps and developing a love of boats from a young age. When his tech company was bought by Intel, he decided it was time to turn his lifelong passion into a career.

Standing at over six feet tall and sporting a beard, Captain John certainly fits the part of a Maine charter captain, but most people are surprised to hear his singing voice. “I just love to sing. We plug in an iPod, and I’ll just pass the microphone around,” he says. “I especially

love Garth Brooks and sappy love songs.” But he’ll sing just about anything his passengers want to hear on his boat tours.

Every summer, Captain John offers multiple boat tours from Camp Ellis on his 40-foot fiberglass Coast Guard-certified charter boat the Island Prince. Certified to carry 36 passengers plus two crewmembers, the boat has hosted everyone from bachelorettes to families to the nuns from St. Joseph’s Convent in Biddeford Pool.

The Island Prince typically runs daily tours Thursday through Sunday during the summer.

On Thursday nights, the Island Prince travels up the coast from Camp Ellis to Old Orchard Beach (OOB) for OOB’s weekly fireworks, and

departing Friday and Saturday evenings at 5:30 pm, the 2.5-hour evening scenic tour takes guests from Camp Ellis to Biddeford Pool, OOB and Pinepoint Beach and back.

“Weddings and vow renewals are becoming quite popular,” Ellis says. “Not only am I a licensed boat captain, but I’m licensed to do weddings!”

Captain John also hosts private parties, offshore and deep-sea fishing and attended ash-scattering.

The biweekly Reggae Sunday on Peaks Island tour is new this charter season. Open to guests ages 21 and over, the tour features a 1.5-hour cruise from Camp Ellis to Peaks Island in Portland to attend Reggae Sunday at Jones Landing for the ultimate summer fun before returning to Camp Ellis. While each boat tour is bring-yourown-food-and-drink, you’ll always have great entertainment from Captain John.

If sea conditions aren’t safe, Captain John will give his guests the option to rebook or cruise up the Saco River to the Biddeford/Saco town line. “I take safety seriously onboard the boat,” he says, adding, “I’ve never had anyone get seasick on one of my tours.”

Every summer, Captain John also hosts free cruises for the Massachusetts-based Project New Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides family retreats for U.S. military members. “I feel

honored and proud to offer these cruises to our service members. Many of them are disabled, and as soon as we hit the water, you can see them relax and enjoy the experience,” he says. “We sing and have fun while taking in the incredible views of coastal Maine. If we’re lucky, we’ll spot some sea life, too.”

Captain John’s Charter isn’t the only boat business Ellis runs. He also owns and runs a 55-ton, 120-seat riverboat in Webster, Massachusetts, called the Indian Princess. Decked out with authentic paddlewheels, a full bar and a dining area, the riverboat cruises Webster Lake from Indian Ranch on weekends in the summer.

During the off-season months, Ellis keeps himself busy with other business opportunities. This past winter, he had the opportunity to pilot The F/V Nor’easter from The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport during Christmas Prelude.

“I wouldn’t trade my job for the world. I just love the people. I love chitchatting and singing with guests, and I love giving them a different perspective of Maine,” he says. “It’s a beautiful feeling being out on the water.”
