and Turn Down the Noise, Noise, Noise

And just like that, summer turns to fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving and before we know it we find ourselves on the cusp of another holiday season. Thanks to the scores of volunteers who work so tirelessly in Kennebunkport, Christmas Prelude makes its triumphant return as a holiday festival not to be missed. In so many ways, it is the quintessential Maine Christmas fair that includes everything from Santa arriving in Dock Square aboard a lobster boat, the Christmas tree lighting and amazing fireworks, parades, house tours and fantastic fare to satisfy every foodie’s yen. Perhaps one of the best things about Prelude is that it ends around the first week of December, which gives us a chance to really savor the season. It is incredibly hard to slow down and try not to do every event under the sun, moon and stars. Yes, take in a parade, a tree lighting and maybe a Christmas concert or two. But try not to watch too many Christmas classics like “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” too soon. While they may be broadcast multiple times on TV, restraint is often rewarded with true appreciation for those wonderful shows that many of us grew up watching. Remember the Grinch? One of his chief complaints was “the noise, noise, noise.”

Christmas. Sadly, we lost my stepmother, Lorraine Cook, earlier this fall two years after my dad departed this life. Hopefully, they are together this Christmas again. Not having them around is hard, but it reminds me how important it is to appreciate the people who are still part of our lives.

One of the few sanctuaries where my family and I can feel the true meaning of this holiday is when we go to our church and celebrate the arrival and birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. The music sung by our choir, which includes my wife, Mary, our pastor’s gentle sermons and our kids performing in the Christmas play fills my heart with so much joy and happiness that I wish I could share with everyone.

The world turns and the calendars change from year to year so rapidly it is easy to forget what truly matters when we are so wrapped up in the holiday season. Now more than ever, it is important to turn down the noise of those irritating TV commercials and 24/7 holiday music on those radio stations and rediscover the true peace and happiness that lies at the heart of Christmas.

Some of the most simple things like picking out the best Christmas tree, transporting it home and decorating it with our favorite keepsake ornaments as a family while listening to Christmas carols is definitely in my top three. I also love watching my wife, Mary, bake and decorate her gingerbread cookies with our son, Patrick. If we happen to get a good snowfall that is even better. Maine was made for moments like these.

So what can we do to make this holiday season brighter for others who may not be as fortunate as us? Seek out opportunities to give to others in need. Donate a few canned goods to a local food pantry or volunteer to buy some presents for some local children who might otherwise have nothing to open on Christmas Day. “To receive is good. To give is divine,” so the saying goes. Perhaps the most important thing this holiday season is to spend time with family and the ones we love. This is especially true for my family this

Rediscover the True Holiday Joy of

Prelude!

BY JENNIFER SAUNDERS | PHOTOS BY ROBERT DENNIS If you’ve lived in or near the Kennebunks, you know Christmas Prelude is a one-of-a-kind event. It’s beloved by residents and visitors alike, many of whom attend year after year to celebrate the season with this festive holiday tradition. But what sets Prelude apart and makes it a must-attend event for so many? Who better to ask than some of the community members who have been there from its founding or volunteer their time to make the event so memorable each year. “Prelude is basically a small-town, old-fashioned type of celebration that tries to keep Christmas traditions as its basis. Almost all events are family-oriented and include multigenerational guests who come back to us every year. This year will mark our 37th Prelude, so we have seen parents who originally brought their children who are now bringing their grandchildren. We have hosted couples who got married on Prelude weekend, who got engaged by the Dock Square tree, as well as family reunions who meet here for the weekend,” explains Sheila Bull-Matthews, chair of the Christmas Prelude Committee and owner of the Rhumbline Resort.

to a semi-professional a cappella group who come for the fun and don’t mind performing on the local elementary school stage. There are myriad crafts fairs. There is the Firehouse Chili offering. Santa arrives on the first weekend on a lobster boat and the second weekend on a fire truck. People just love it,” she says. “All the work is done by business and town volunteers. The Kennebunkport Business Association uses its dues to purchase the greenery to decorate the town. The tree is always donated, and our tree decorations consist of wooden cut-outs of lobsters and old lobster buoys that are recycled each year.”

What makes Prelude different? Bull-Matthews offers a lengthy list.

Laura Dolce, director of the Kennebunkport-Kennebunk-Arundel Chamber of Commerce, agrees. “Folks travel the country over to be a part of the Christmas Prelude magic that happens every year in the Kennebunks. Take a quaint town like Kennebunkport and transform the shops and streets with Prelude greens, white lights, red bows — perhaps a sprinkling of snow — and a family-focused schedule full of traditional holiday activities with a Maine twist, and we have a holiday celebration that connects family and friends in a perfect way,” she says. “Events like Prelude connect all ages and interests in a meaningful way. If Maine can boast we're ‘the way life should be,’ we should say, Prelude, the way the holidays should be!"

“We are different in that we try to keep that small, New England town type of atmosphere. Everything we offer is free, and sometimes nonprofits ask for donations. We offer everything from pony rides, to a ‘touch tank’ where the kids can experience the wonders of the ocean and see and hold small crabs, barnacles, clams, etc. We have an old-fashioned photo booth. We offer entertainments from our local schools right up

Rick Litchfield, who is the owner and innkeeper of the Capt. Thomas Lord Mansion with his wife Bev Davis, was one of the local shopkeepers who helped begin Christmas Prelude. “Our fervent hope was that it would help extend the season,” he recalls. “Well, it certainly exceeded our expectations, and I believe it was because we kept events simple and focused on families and the real spirit of a community Christmas celebration. There

4

NEIGHBORS OF THE KENNEBUNKS

were three original main scheduled events, beginning with the tree lighting and caroling on Friday night, which is still popular and very well-attended. The candlelight caroling at the Franciscan Monastery still draws several thousand carolers and is a draw for lots of families with children. The third original event was Santa arriving by lobster boat; it was developed as being unique to Kennebunkport and also focused on families. I believe we are still the only coastal town where Santa arrives by boat!” This year’s Christmas Prelude events begin on Nov. 29 and continue through Dec. 9. “The Kennebunk High School Chorus opens our first weekend by giving a 30-minute concert before the tree lighting. A few chorus members can be seen and heard strolling the streets during the weekend serenading the guests,” Bull-Matthews notes. “The first weekend’s Hat Parade is always a huge hit. Anyone can participate, as long as you have a hat. People line the streets to take a peek at the creativity of the folks in the parade. "It takes a village to produce Prelude in Kennebunkport, and it shows in the variety, creativity and execution with special events such as Santa arriving by lobster boat, caroling around Cape Porpoise's lobster-trap tree, The Nonantum's Fire & Ice, and Washington Hose Company's lobster bake,” Dolce adds. “Dozens of events are run and hosted by community businesses, groups and nonprofits, organized by the all-volunteer Prelude committee, with no huge corporate sponsors. This approach honors the true meaning of the season, and folks feel the difference that makes.”

DECEMBER 2018

5

“Other important aspects that developed almost immediately from the beginning of Christmas Prelude were the craft fairs and food events, which provide a significant income for many local charities and community organizations,” Littlefield says. “That benefit to the community is important.” “We try to include old-fashioned type entertainments like Patriot Fife and Drum, a duo who stroll through town playing Christmas tunes,” Bull-Matthews says. “We have a wandering minstrel and a barber shop quartet who stroll through the streets singing traditional Christmas songs. The second weekend’s Pooch Parade has also become a highlight. Last year we had two pups, side by side — one had a lobster trap on with a big red bow and the other was dressed as a lobster buoy. So you can understand why so many people love coming.” What else separates this holiday festival from other celebrations? “I believe that Christmas Prelude draws on the good will and warmth that still exists around that holiday. Of course there are new and very popular events like the Hat Parade, the Pooch Parade and the fireworks; however, despite the large crowds for all events now, most people seem to have a smile and be happy about being here,” Littlefield says. So 27 years later, the volunteers still keep coming together to make Prelude the unique event it is, and community members and visitors alike continue to start their holidays here. Perhaps Bull-Matthews sums it up best: “I love listening to the stories, year after year. I love seeing the smiles on the visitors’ faces. I love working with the business people from town who give of themselves without asking for anything in return,” she says. “It’s a little bit of an escape where everyone is happy.” Jennifer Saunders serves as the content coordinator of Neighbors of the Kennebunks Magazine. Prelude Warmth

Prelude Ale

In keeping with the seasonal theme, our brewing team at KBC takes great pride in crafting, and serving, our special-release beers to match up with the season. That said, we brew Prelude Holiday Ale to be available to kick off the Prelude festival and pour through the New Year celebration. Truly our “Holiday Ale!”

brings

BY MIKE HALEY Each season here in the ‘Port has its own pace. Changes in the weather, population swings, family activities and traditions all play a role. For us, at the Kennebunkport Brewing Company (KBC) and Federal Jack’s, our favorite and most influential change in the seasons revolves around beer! As our “beer calendar” of seasonal specialties, each designed to match the overall feeling of the season, is coming to a close, it is with great anticipation — and reward — that we save our best for last. Each December, we are honored to help kick off the Kennebunks’ holiday season with the release of Prelude Holiday Ale. KBC and Fed Jack’s began brewing “The Shipyard” line of English-style ales in June of 1992. After a hectic first summer of production, KBC founder Fred Forsley was ready to offer something special back to the Kennebunks. His idea of a tribute brew “that represented the Prelude celebration” and “would make guests smile” was all that master brewer Alan Pugsley needed for inspiration. Pugsley explains, “It was the very first seasonal beer made at KBC in November 1992. It was a traditional English winter

content brew (usually near 7 percent abv. yielding from the original recipe brewed at KBC), and the result is sure to lift the spirits and warm the soul!

warmer-style of English strong ale, blending a complex malt grist along with English and U.S. hops to produce a complex, warming, well-balanced winter beer.” Prelude Holiday Ale, available on draft and in hand bottled 22-ounce “bombers,” initially bore the words “Holiday Cheer” on the label. There may not be a more appropriate description for a seasonally released beer. Beginning with the inviting, deep amber hue and the rich, nutty caramel sweetness from the blend of British malts, including pale, crystal, chocolate and wheat, to the perfect balance of hops, with English varieties like Fuggles and East Kent Goldings, along with U.S.-grown Tettnang and Cascade that lend notes of pine and spice. This beer appeals to all the senses. The sweetness balances perfectly with the hop notes, often giving the impression of a mulled spiced beer, although there are no spices added. Then factor in the warming effects of this higher alcohol

During the month of December, our post-summer slumbering town awakens, demanding five to six batches of this festive brew — nearly 1,000 gallons! — to be sold through the taps at Federal Jack’s or “to go” from the KBC Shipyard Store in half-gallon growlers or kegs for home use or Christmas parties. Our production facility team at the Shipyard Brewery now produces all of the bottled “Prelude Special Ale” that is sent out for distribution around the country. These brews often make it to the shelves before we begin pouring here at Fed’s. This is in response to the logistical challenges of distribution, production volumes and transition from one seasonal release beer to another in a crowded marketplace. While we are happy that this special brew is available to folks from outside our cozy little village, we believe that enjoying our Prelude Holiday Ale from its original source brings with it some extra holiday cheer.

Garage Doors for every budget!

“Still going well 26 years later!” says Alan Pugsley in praise of his Prelude Holiday Ale. We are certainly all in agreement, and the smiles on our guests’ faces during their time spent over the holiday season in the pub can certainly show proof of that. From our crew in the brewery at KBC and the friendly staff at Federal Jack’s and the KBC Shipyard Store, we offer a hearty “Cheers” to you and your families during these festive times in the Kennebunks! Mike Haley is the head brewer at the Kennebunkport Brewing Company in Kennebunk, Maine.

with Some Delicious Prelude Chili and Buttery Cornbread! December is one of my favorite months of the year for many reasons — and one is it is the beginning of Christmas Prelude in the ‘Port. I love the hustle and the bustle of the crowds and the children running around in anticipation of Santa Claus arriving, as well as the Christmas tree lighting and all the other events that are offered in this wonderful celebration of Christmas. I love to participate in as many of the events as I can and still be able to prepare a nice healthy satisfying meal for my family during this busy time. One of those meals is my chili. Not only does it fare well in the slow cooker, but it actually tastes better the second day. So after being out on a crisp, cold day enjoying the events of Prelude, who doesn't want to come home to a nice warm spicy bowl of chili with a side of corn bread slathered in butter? Let's get this chili started!

BY DEBBIE MEIER

PRELUDE CHILI INGREDIENTS: •

3 cans of red kidney beans

1/2 lb ground turkey

2 cans of tomato sauce

3 tbsp of chili spice

1 can of Diced tomatoes

1 tbsp of cayenne pepper

3 tbsp of tomato paste

1 tsp of red pepper

1 cup of beef broth

2 tbsp of salt

1 bottle of chili sauce

1 tbsp black pepper

1 stalk of celery, diced

1 cup of green, orange and yellow diced peppers

3 cloves of garlic, chopped

1/2 diced red onion

1 jalapeno chopped, de-ribbed and de-seeded

1 lb of ground beef

2/3 cup soft butter

2 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of cornmeal

3 large eggs, room temp

4 1/2 tsp of baking powder

1 2/3 cups of milk

1 tsp salt

CORNBREAD IN CAST IRON METHOD: •

Preheat oven to 400°

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Combine eggs and milk.

Combine flour and cornmeal and baking powder and salt.

Add all to the creamed mixture until it is smooth.

Pour in a greased, 10- or 12-inch cast-iron frying pan.

Bake for 22 to 27 minutes.

Place celery, onion and peppers into a frying pan with olive oil and let them sweat on medium heat for four to five minutes.

Add your garlic and continuing cooking for approximately two more minutes. Then place the celery, onion and pepper mixture into your slow cooker.

In the same pan, you're going to brown your ground beef and ground turkey with a little olive oil. While you're browning your meat, place all your sauces and your diced tomatoes and chili sauce into the slow cooker with the onion mixture.

Next you are going to add all of your spices to the sauce mixture.

Once your meat is brown, drain it and add it to the rest of the ingredients.

Cook on low for seven to eight hours or on high for four hours.

Once it has completed this the cooking process, you can just leave your slow cooker on warm so the chili is ready to enjoy at any time.

Serve chili with shredded cheese, a dollop of sour cream and a side of cornbread.

This is surely going to warm up your family’s belly after being out celebrating Christmas Prelude!

PORT LOBSTER CO.

Beyond Prelude: Don't Miss

"A Christmas Carol: The Musical" BY ROBERT COOK Christmas Prelude in the Kennebunks may very well be the most wonderful time of the year thanks to all of the exciting events, tree lighting ceremonies, fireworks over Dock Square, concerts and holiday cheer. But just a few miles north of Kennebunkport there are also a few holiday happenings to consider. For example, the Biddeford City Theatre will offer up “A Christmas Carol: the Musical" during Prelude and beyond. Tickets for the shows in this historic opera house style theatre go for just $20 each and the shows provide great entertainment. The adaptation of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic by Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens takes the audience on the familiar journey that leads miser Ebenezer Scrooge to true joy and redemption when he mends his ways. Thanks to the ghosts of Scrooge’s business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future, Scrooge learns there is much greater value in giving and helping others than simply acquiring and hoarding wealth at the expense of others.
