Directors – Scott & Chadd
FROM THE DIRECTORS Welcome to the Easter edition of the Cooke & Dowsett newsletter. The start of 2020 has been a challenging year to date with the devastating bushfires, the aftermath of smoke related polluted air quality and now, just two months later, the world is in lockdown as we all battle the COVID-19 virus. Who could have ever predicted such a world phenomenon would occur in our lifetime? None other than American business magnate, software developer, investor and philanthropist, Bill Gates, who did make a prediction in 2015: A TED Talk video of Bill Gates has resurfaced in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Social media posts claim Gates predicted the COVID-19 outbreak as early as 2015. ... “The failure to prepare could allow the next epidemic to be dramatically more devastating than Ebola,” he said.
We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and assistance as we adjust to our alternative working conditions. Be it video and phone conferencing, travel restrictions, social distancing and the implementation of specific health and safety procedures across our operations, everyone has contributed to ensuring all remain safe. Whilst the full extent and impacts of COVID-19 will not be known for some time, we are continuing to look under every rock and explore all opportunities to ensure our pipeline of work remains at productive levels. We have tentatively secured a number of projects which vary in size, stretching across different sectors of Australia. The specific details of which can be released once the individual project contracts are finalised and executed. The health and wellbeing of our staff, families, friends, clients, suppliers and all of our industry partners across the globe is always front of mind. On the request of Victorian Secretary, Earl Setches of the Plumbers Union, C&D was able to secure a highly sought-after glass chest freezer with the help of Steve Zavalas and Harvey Norman. This freezer will be used to assist with the Victorian State Parliament’s pre-packaged food service, who in conjunction with St Peter’s Eastern Hill Anglican Church and Heaven at the Hill Social Enterprise, are providing for those in need due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We want to thank everyone who has contributed to our newsletter by providing content. Whether this is social highlights, event and industry news, project updates and photos since the December edition. This is a great way of recognising and displaying the capabilities and outcomes of the entire Cooke & Dowsett Plumbing Group across each state, regional and international offices who all contribute to us being a successful organisation. Each individual project varies immensely, and, as we continue to develop our skill level and expertise within the group, we will bound towards new opportunities from current clients and new through our reputation.

Coronavirus Guidelines - Cooke & Dowsett Plumbing Group: At Cooke & Dowsett, the health and wellbeing of our people is of paramount importance and we recognise our responsibility as an employer to continue to monitor COVID-19 and its impacts. As we grasp the full seriousness of COVID-19, we recognise that the impacts of the outbreak are evolving daily. This means the guidelines that we have been providing, along with the need to update our communication in response to those changes is of the utmost importance. COVID-19 has led to a large number of people now working from a range of locations, including family homes, remote isolated state offices, hot desk and isolated site-based offices across Australia & New Zealand. At the time of print our New Zealand business has been subject to worksite closures and total lockdown imposed by their Government. Our thoughts are with Gary and the team across the ditch. Now is more important than ever to ensure that our industry stays strong and are able to respond appropriately and effectively to this major community health emergency. We do however have a long way to go. Do the right thing by listening to all official Government advice and stay safe as we all get through this pandemic together. Thanks Scott & Chadd

Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) Training
Our fantastic training room located at head office is now fully functioning
WHSEQ Managers Report Cooke & Dowsett recently sent ten qualified plumbers on a two day Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) course at the Plumbing Industry and Climate Action Centre (PICAC) in Brunswick. This program is designed to train plumbers to test, commission and maintain hot water temperature control devices, including thermostatic mixing vales in water services. This course is nationally recignised and provided by Master Plumbers. Our fantastic training room located at head office is now fully functioning. We have held training and executive leadership meetings in the room over the past few months. It is anticipated that the room will be well utilised for all types of training and the occasional social gathering!.
World Plumbing Day – 11 March Three of Cooke & Dowsett‘s Apprentices competed in the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC) World Plumbing Day Apprentice Skills Contest which is aimed at showcasing the skills and knowledge of leading Victorian third, fourth or recently qualified plumbing apprentices. Competitors were given a work project to complete within a specified time limit and were judged on precision, diligence, skilfulness and attitude. Well done to Cooke & Dowsett apprentices Khayne Horman and Daniel Tadinac who participated on the day and congratulations to Hayden Smith who finished third in the event. World Plumbing Day is celebrated globally each year on March 11 to celebrate the importance of plumbing and plumbers for the collective health and safety of our modern society.

“Neither snow not rain not Covid 19….” There has been much panic and confusion over the impacts of the Corona Virus, and by the time you read this newsletter the situation may well have evolved yet again. In the background, the business has been making contingency plans covering site or office closures, hygiene practices and welfare support. One of our most critical processes is the weekly payroll we carry out for eight different businesses. Over recent weeks we have been gearing up by providing training to back-up staff, implementing readiness to work from remote locations and preparing backup files that could be uploaded to our bank. You can rest assured that after the wellbeing of our staff – making sure that our payrolls are processed on time is among our highest priorities. 4

The new year has welcomed some exciting new projects especially in the Geelong region. Projects include St John of God Hospital and the Deakin University Campus new student accommodation. Existing works on the Deakin Uni KA Building are programmed to be completed midyear. The onsite platform currently being used for recording passive fire and quality inspection plans is receiving positive feedback. This software enables us to streamline processes on site ensuring improved quality and accuracy of reporting. Practical completion has been achieved for the replacement of the flusher and cold-water tanks at Melbourne Central – congratulations to all employees involved as this was a challenging project. Planning and replacement of the final 2 hydrant tanks is well underway. The first stage of works is due to start at Melbourne Uni Precinct Project which will deliver social spaces, mixed use retail, food and beverage outlets including increased study spaces to students accessing the university. Cooke & Dowsett will be introducing their latest investment in the coming month. An enclosed trailer is currently being custom made to transport their new polyethylene butt welding equipment. Polyethylene piping systems are commonly used for water, gas and fire mains in lieu of the older style ductile iron and blue brute piping systems. The trailer will not only transport the butt-welding machine but also a generator, pipe rollers, stands, scraping tools and a small quantity of fittings. The welding equipment is only required/ allowed to be operated by competent employees who have completed the butt-welding course. The new equipment will be available for all projects that require butt welding of multiple pipes ensuring consistent productivity, quality and versatility. Rodney Smith Operations Manager

Deakin University Waurn Ponds
DEAKIN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION The year has kicked off with a rapid start at Deakin Waurn Ponds with Icon Co. Jake Young and the site team have been doing an amazing job to transform a paddock into 35 separate two storey structures. There are 320 student accommodation bedrooms in total with a new town hall, communal and administration buildings. With an intensive program and many works fronts, a lot of skilled thought, planning and processes have been put in place. With the boom in work in the Geelong region, it’s great to have our local workforce back.
GHMBA OFFICES The brand-new project has been awarded! A big thanks to Richard Flood over in the Hobart office who put loads of effort into the tender. Works are quickly proceeding on site with piling works to commence mid-March and the three-storey basement dig to then commence. We’re already working closely with Barwon Water on sewer and water connections in preparation, the task is proving to be a difficult one, with the deep sewer mains dating back to 1902. Dane Peterson Project Manager
ST JOHN OF GOD HOSPITALCSSD EXPANSION The project and design teams have been working hard to determine existing services with many live cut-ins and shut-downs to occur within operational suites and theatre. NEW SOUTH WALES
Sebel Yarrawonga From the crew in Albury we hope everybody had a great Christmas/New Year break and got some quality time with family and friends. 2020 was a reasonably soft but very hot start up here on the Murray. Albury saw its all-time top temperature of 46.1c with an average daily temperature of 37.4c for the entire month of January. Bushfires were first and foremost on many peoples minds up this way as the landscape to East of us was burning both sides of the Murray River. The new Hamilton Apartments and Hoffman Road Warehouse Projects commenced along with the restart of the new DELWP Depot at Tallangatta that has been on hold since April 2019 due to latent on-site conditions.
SEBEL YARRAWONGA Nathan O’Neill has taken on the role as site manager and will complete stage 4B. We have no doubt Nathan and his team will bring what has been a difficult project home in great fashion. Paul Harrington, Wayne Clement, Shannon McDonald and their team have completed this landmark project on the foreshore of Lake Mulwala within the Silverwoods Golf Estate.
Tendering is constant at present with John constantly punching numbers but the market is still very competitive, we are receiving positive feedback on a number of projects so fingers crossed we can get one or two across the line in the coming weeks.
DUBBO HOSPITAL STAGE 4
Sebel Resort Yarrawonga
Stage 4A has now been completed and handed over to our client, Health Infrastructure NSW. Cooke & Dowsett staff have completed some great work under difficult site conditions. Project Manager Luke Dimieri has moved back to Townsville with his family, Luke has done another great job for us in Albury and we wish Luke, Andrea and the kids all the best in North Queensland. WAGGA BASE HOSPITAL The project is currently running in top gear with our guys working on all levels. Collectively the team are working on rough-in, suspended drainage, fire service, high level copper and testing were available. The onsite platform currently being used for recording passive fire is being used effectively, it’s a great tool and will help us shine at the tail end of the project. A very tight construction program and being a design and construct project is challenging the team however pleased to report we are maintaining program in all areas.

Tumbarumba MPS We are now on the home straight with this job, 3 milestone stages stretching over 28 months. Richard Crookes Constructions (RCC) are pleased with the progress, this was their first Multipurpose Service Program Project. RCC appreciated the help and guidance that Cooke & Dowsett could offer with having a good handle on the NSW health requirements that we have experienced working on similar past projects. Hats off to the team for bringing home yet another successful project. New Apprentice – we welcome aboard a new first year apprentice Jimmy Obrien. Jimmy commenced early February and was an obvious choice for Cooke & Dowsett. Jimmy had been undertaking work experience as a plumber where and when ever he could as this was his chosen career path. Jimmy will attend GO TAFE Wangaratta in May. We look forward to Jimmy develop his skills over the next few years and becoming a part of
WEEKS 1 & 2 - For the first two weeks I was changing out an old hot and cold water main from 65mm steel pipe to 65mm alupex pipe, this required us to talk to each resident every day to update them on what we were up to, this was because they were without water for 2 weeks! We then had to cut the existing piping out, jack hammer out the concrete and re-pipe all the way from the 1st floor to the 4th floor. WEEK 3 - the next week I was working with a different section of the company. I was doing a bit of maintenance plumbing this time, installing radiators and fixing toilets. During this week I also helped do the drainage for a renovation on a bathroom, this meant hammering through the floor to put a new floor waste in then run the pipe to the toilet, basin, washing machine and shower. The pipe they used for this was 40mm push together UVPC pipe. I also went to a construction site where they were adding a new story to a building, they did this by setting up a big tent-like structure over the building, cutting out the roof, then rebuilding another level. The roofs are all pitched at quite steep angles because of their snowfall so it was interesting to see how it was done. WEEK 4 - During this week I was with 3 other guys and we were changing out most of the valves in the basement area. This was because they had been in place for a while and were starting to rust out. We had to shut the water off to the whole building every day, cut out the existing valves, thread new pipe up and put new valves in. WEEK 5 - Week 5 consisted of more maintenance plumbing, swapping out old rusted valves and piping for the in-floor heating line and fitting off a new apartment’s bathroom and kitchen. We also replaced a toilet that was from the 70’s. The fitting off was interesting because their apartments are so small, the bathroom was pretty much a shower over the top of a toilet with the basin next to it.
Jimmy Obrien
DENMARK INTERNSHIP
WEEK 6 - The last week was pretty much maintenance as well, going to a renovation of an apartment. In this apartment we replaced the floor waste and re-piped everything up, we then swapped out a section of the drainage pipe.

2019/2020 BUSHFIRES From a personal level I have been involved in the unprecedented devastating bushfires since late August 2019 that Southern QLD, NSW & Eastern / North East Victoria has seen. The history books have been re-written with these fires. In NSW alone 5.4 million hectares have been burnt, 2439 homes lost, 25 civilians lives lost and sadly 6 firefighters. 3 of these were volunteers and 3 were Americans in a Hercules C 130 Fire Bomber that crashed fighting fires in the Cooma region. The fires progressively moved South from September ravishing everything in their path and eventually we had very large fires in our region, the Upper Murray, late December. A fire started on the 29th December by lightning just west of Jingellic in the Green Valley, NSW and on Monday the 30th with very strong North Westerly winds the fire grew in intensity and was uncontrollable. Unfortunately, at approx. 6:00pm a freak weather event called a Pyrocumulus Column Collapse took place sending cyclonic force winds from 8000 meters high back to the ground flipping an 11 tonne fire truck onto its roof killing a 28-year-old volunteer fire fighter Sam McPaul. Another crew member on Sam’s truck was severely burnt and air lifted to the Alfred Hospital, with the driver sustaining minor injuries. 3.5km away in the same extreme weather event two fire fighters were badly burnt being caught away from their truck and totally surrounded by fire, they were very lucky to escape to the Murray River where they jumped in to cool their burns until they could be evacuated of the fireground.
The NSWRFS command vehicle I was driving was also impacted by this weather event being blown off the road, as I slid out to driver’s side window to run to safety the vehicle was engulfed in flames. I sustained leg injuries and concussion and were taken to Albury Base Hospital for treatment. This fire went onto burn 235,00 hectares combined in both NSW & VIC as it jumped the Murray River, 88 homes lost, thousands of head of stock lost and literally thousands of kms of fencing destroyed along with the massive loss of flora, fauna & wildlife. The fires maybe now be out and the media gone but the loss of life, loss of property and people’s lively hoods impacted will be felt for many months & years to come. If you a planning a holiday in the coming months head into a bushfire affected area and support the local communities that have lost so much. We have finally received some much-needed rain over the past week or so which will assist in the recovery of the devastated landscape. Ian Avage Director

QUEENSLAND
ICNSSC Nearing Completion
Hello from sunny Qld to the Cooke & Dowsett family, what a great time of the year the start of Autumn. Since our last newsletter, and whilst true Tier 1 EBA project opportunities remain scarce, we have secured a couple of smaller projects for new clients in Qld Scentre Group and Lendlease. Whilst they are entrée sized projects compared to what we are all about, they are equally important in the sense that they serve as an apprenticeship to the main course and that we intend to build long lasting relationships with these project teams moving forward … Travis is the PM who we have entrusted in completing this significant role for both of these projects. The first being a Kmart Refurb for Scentre Group and the second is an Early Works package for Lendlease at the New Performing Arts Venue in Southbank. The main package for this job is expected to be let later in the year, this will be a flagship project that will be iconic to Queensland and ultimately Cooke & Dowsett should we be successful in our tender. Believe it or not Travis has managed to fit a holiday where he will continue to work on his tan up at DDI (Daydream Island) just after Easter, as the client has reached out to Cooke & Dowsett for assistance with a fire pump booster upgrade, with our own “Leyland Brother” John Aitken assisting in the hands-on aspects. Tough job boys, but someone has to do it…. Inner City North State Secondary College (ICNSSC) is due for project handover late May Cooke & Dowsett are well advanced in the state of construction and will bring it home in a canter (kind of like how Winx would win her races). This is a testament to Chris Mutimer and Zane Eyers for the effective planning, communication and co-ordination that they have displayed from Day 1 which has made the project profitable (shhh) and delivered on time. There is one last major works to complete on the project, being the detention tank with 280mm PE line being installed inside the tank. This tank is a 1.9m litre Flood Detention tank to capture water displaced by the new construction of Building 1 with Cooke & Dowsett providing a (huge) submersible pump package to drain this over a period of 6 hours, to factor in tidal influences from the operational methodology.

After 2 years of planning, false starts, delays and many robust conversations with the builders site teams, we have finally got the major piece of Stormwater Filtration Equipment installed and completed our connection to the Brisbane River at 443 Queen St. Chris and Andy could write a book on this particular scope of works which involve a detailed excavation next to the Brisbane River, with a 150 year old heritage listed tree only metres away, which requires a full time Arborist on site checking root structure of tree, every step of the dig, not to mention coordinating with the tides and tight site access!! The Apex jump system has finally been completed, which will set the project up to finally start smashing out the typical floors and provide us with some much-needed work front… Bring it on. On the social side of things, we would like to welcome our new Estimator Scott Heptinstall to the Cooke & Dowsett Qld team. Scott has already been a breath of fresh air to our team, due to his passion and energy that is naturally within his personality… Don’t change brother, keep it rolling!! Scott’s role will be to price work nationally and we have no doubt that he will be ringing that bell in the very near future!! Congratulations to Marcus Smith and wife Camilla on the birth of their 2nd baby girl – Darcy. Finally, from all of us at Cooke & Dowsett Nationally, we want to send all our love and best wishes to Danielle Pazmany who recently gave birth to her daughter Liani Lea. Danni you have been such a great help to all of us here not only just in the Qld office and sites, but also for all the other states that have called on your assistance over the years. You will be truly missed but most definitely welcomed back to the Cooke & Dowsett family whenever you decide to return. We have absolutely no doubt you will make an awesome MUM!!! WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The Parmalia Hilton
The start of 2020 has also seen the start of several new projects for Cooke & Dowsett here in Western Australia. We have been lucky enough to forge some new partnerships securing several new projects including: The Parmalia Hilton fit out in partnership with ADCO Constructions sees the complete removal of all fittings, fixtures and associated services for the complete refit of the 208-room city hotel. This project has several challenges including the hotel being in part operation for the duration of these construction works. The Aldi Store Category 1 Works and Carousel Zone 11, partnering with Scentre Group includes the base building works for two separate Westfield Shopping Centre sites. The Inground works for Tower 2 at Capital Square, partnering with D&C Built. This project will be adjacent to the recently completed Woodside building on the Old Emu Brewery site and will consist of a 35-floor office tower. The Woolworths Store and Plaza at Inglewood in partnership with Broad Constructions this project is due for completion in December 2020. The threestory Shopping Centre at the corner of Beaufort Street and Eighth Avenue will comprise of a Woolworths Supermarket, liquor store, restaurant, convenience store, fast food outlet and 193 parking bays. These above exciting new projects have led to the requirement of an additional Project Manager to assist with the delivery of these projects. We would like to welcome Jarrad Sara to the delivery team in this new role. Jarrad has been a Cooke & Dowsett employee for around 8 years and seen him raise through the ranks from Plumber to Site Manager through to Project Manager. We congratulate Jarrad on this new appointment. We are looking forward to continuing to build on this momentum into the second quarter of the year and continuing to build on these relationships. PROJECT PLUMBING & MAINTENANCE
Ethan Minns & Adam Janousek - Gemlife Woodend
Robert Hayes – UOM Building
At Gemlife’s Over 50’s Lifestyle Resort in Woodend Stephen Dale is the leading hand with one apprentice, David Pacovski (from the Master Plumbers Apprentices). On a regular basis, other PPM team members are helping out Stephen to meet the deadlines on site. The progress on site is visible as Stage 2 is near completion. Project Plumbing & Maintenance (PPM) has carried out some challenging and exiting projects over the last few months. The team have had a few minor changes but also welcomed additional new staff members. Every week we are approached by new clients and challenged to attend in new locations like Newman in WA. In Brighton at 767 Hampton Street, PPM finalized the plumbing and drainage works of a Fruit shop extension. The builder is Merkon Construction. John Moloney is carrying out the final fit off and testing of all installed equipment. Ethan Minns has successfully completed his first major construction project as site manager at MITS (Melbourne Indigenous Transition School) Girls Boarding and Respite. PPM was engaged by Kane/Arete Constructions to carry out the Hydraulic Services Works at 139 Richmond Terrace in Richmond. With Kane/Arete we are engaged to refurbish Building 400, Level 2 to 4 at the University of Melbourne. Steven Cameron and a few other team members managed this project to near completion. The demolition of the existing services and a huge amount of Asbestos was a great challenge for our team on site. The team’s professionalism ensured the success in delivering such a high-quality project on time. In January we commenced our third project with Kane/ Arete. A refurbishment at the CSIRO in Clayton. Robert Hayes took on the challenge for the temp works and disconnections of the existing services. This high-profile project requires sound plumbing knowledge.
Carl Misson has taken over the role from James Climas at Deakin University in Burwood. Carl recently became a proud father of a young boy. Congratulations from all of us to a strong and healthy baby boy. PPM’s James Climas is now well established in his role as Project Manager. He is in control of the construction projects and minor works division. I have no doubt James will excel in his new role. PPM has grown the maintenance works in Victoria and is rolling out into others states. Just recently we carried out compliance works in Western Australia, Perth, Newman and Bunbury for BSA. We continue to carry out the Caroma Warranty works in Victoria and Tasmania which is managed by John Moloney. John started with us in February and brought with him years of experience in maintenance to PPM. Towards the end of February Courtney Barnes commenced her role as Contracts Administrator and Scheduling Manager in our office and is managing the day to day items, project administration as well as invoicing and other office administrative requirements. Welcome to our team Courtney, we are looking forward to your journey with PPM. We will be participating in further training for our PPM team members in the coming weeks. Training will include Backflow Prevention, Thermostatic Mixing Valves and Computer Software Systems including Excel. Peter Herzog General Manager
The Warehouse Extension at Jessica Road in Campbellfield is near completion. The final items are the connection of the stormwater tanks to the down and overflow pipes. John Moloney was our finishing plumber on site and delivered an outstanding result. Welcome Courtney Barnes

COOKE & DOWSETT ROSETTA PLUMBING
Crown Plaza Hotel
Cooke & Dowsett – Rosetta Plumbing (CDR) have started the year off with a flying start. Sometimes the momentum after Christmas break can be tough to get going again but with a number of key larger projects coming to a close the delivery teams have been thick into the workload in order to meet builder programmes and hand over dates. Crown Plaza Hotel with Hutchinson builders is due to finish end of March. CDR Site Manager Sam Young has rallied his team to finish off what became a difficult and challenging Hotel fit out package. CDR Site Manager Aaron Warn and team have also all but completed level 4 commercial kitchen and dining fit out, which also came with its own complexities trying to make the plumbing installation fit within existing structure.
2020 will see the final push for Parliament Square Precinct work with Vos Construction & Joinery with the project due to be completed in November this year. As a D&C project designed by Matt Yanez and the Cooke & Dowsett design team, this was a very challenging design trying to drain the site sewer, trade waste and stormwater via gravity through a 4-level carpark. Pipe inverts had to be millimetre perfect including building a grease trap between two floors. On a recent site trip to the Apple Isle, C&D Design Manager Mat Yanez was suitably impressed with the installation and it was great for him to see how the intricate planning of inverts worked out in the final product.

Parliament Square Precinct
Parliament Square Precinct CDR Estimator Richard Flood has also had a great start to 2020 securing a number of smaller but all equally important projects. Taroona High School Music upgrades with Vos Construction & Joinery will be run by CDR Site Manager Kyle Richardson. The project has just broken ground and is shaping to be a nice little project. We also managed to secure Stage 2 of St Michaels Collegiate upgrade with Macquarie Builders which will be run by CDR Site Manager Kalum Krautz. This project which leads straight on from Stage 1 is a refurbishment of the Gym and Pool buildings. One takeout of securing a second stage in a project that has not gone unnoticed by the management team, is that the builder has recommended and supported using CDR for the additional works required. During our busy days plumbing away smashing in pipework, we can sometimes lose track of the fact that we are all working in the customer service industry with Builders, Developers, Architects and their representatives as our stakeholders. Kudos to Kalum and his team for delivering a successful stage 1 project, on time, on budget, with quality delivery and maintaining a great relationship with the Builder Macquarie Builders.
109 Liverpool St with Macquarie Builders is a retail tenancy refurbishment directly across the street from our Crown Plaza Hotel project. This new project will be led by CDR Site Manager Sam Young. The existing 3 story single tenancy will be divided up into 12 or more tenancies, each with their own services. The overall forward pipeline for Tasmania continues to look strong into 2020 and we are continuing to price and negotiate with builders on a number of projects. Robert Pearshouse Director

Hands On Boss!!!!
Our Victorian office staff recently took part in an afternoon of barefoot lawn bowling at the Strathmore Bowling Club. Teams were fiercely competing for the title with Project Manager Brad McNamara and Payroll/ Accounts Receivable Guru Nicola Bell taking home the championship. The post-game banter over numerous refreshments suggests we are all looking forward to the next “networking” afternoon.
