A Festival of Lessons and Carols

Converse College Thursday, November 29, 2012 8:00 pm Twichell Auditorium

A Festival of Lessons and Carols The Festival of Lessons and Carols originated in 1880 with Archbishop Benson when he was the Bishop of Truro for use in that Cathedral. In 1918, it was simplified and modified to use in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, by its Dean, The Very Reverend Eric Milner-White, to whom we also owe the Bidding Prayer. The Christmas service has been a tradition at Converse for the past 109 years. It is a service of worship involving all segments of the Converse community. We welcome all who join us on this occasion.

* Those who are able are asked to stand. Please note the location of all exits in case of an emergency. In the unlikely event of power failure, a generator will begin within ten seconds to provide lighting.

J. Gauntlett, arr. David Willcocks Julia Fijan, soloist Dr. Jones, conductor (Solo) Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child. (Choirs) He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy. (All) For He is our childhood’s pattern, day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, and He shareth in our gladness. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, We shall see Him, but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high; When like stars His children crowned all in white shall wait around.

Luminaries

You are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14 Each year the Converse and Spartanburg community has an opportunity to purchase a luminary in memory of or in honor of a loved one. The proceeds raised through the sale of the luminaries are given to a local community partner. This year the proceeds will be given to AccessHealth Spartanburg. The mission of AccessHealth is to improve access to healthcare for the uninsured of Spartanburg County through sustainable health system change that will result in better health outcomes and 100% access to effective, efficient, safe, timely, patient-centered, and equitable healthcare.
