DESIGN CONCEPT Inspired by the strong “rhythmic groove” of the music genre funk, the interior design concept plays off of the passionate, indelicate nature of the sound. A structural design approach to the interior space reflects the earthiness and authenticity of the genre. A clustered layout incorporating overlapping and interlocking ceiling details resembles the rhythmic layering created by typical funk instruments. While the underlying principle of rhythm grounds the interior space, variety shapes a stimulating environment that is reminiscent of an off-beat funky groove.

FUNCTIONAL CONCEPT The design solution supports community involvement and promotes place attachment through a stimulating environment that reflects the creative, off-beat nature of those who eat and socialize within the space.

Appropriate lighting and alternative seating options support the varying tasks of customers. The proper use of ventilation along with visual merchandising and branding will increase sales.

LOCATION AND EXISTING BUILDING The Funky Monkey is located in downtown Charleston, SC at 51 George Street. This site is located within the neighborhood of the College of Charleston and is just a half block away from the bustling retail shops located on King Street.

The project is an adaptive reuse. Prior businesses in this building include a clothing store, a florist, and a deli.

The building sits within the historical district of Charleston. The façade of the building is brick, and the entry doors and windows are thickly trimmed with painted wood. Modifications made to the exterior include a new paint color on the trim and the addition of awnings.

The existing interior included a glazed concrete finished floor with a concrete subfloor, concrete columns, finished drywall, unfinished/exposed ceiling structure with HVAC, sprinklers, and electrical wiring.

The east wall is shared with the adjacent building. The west wall has windows overlooking an outdoor courtyard with access to adjacent buildings. The south wall opens to an enclosed alley.

A PLAN FOR PLACE ATTACHMENT The Funky Monkey’s interior provides a sense of belonging by providing a variety of seating types that allow for personal space, as well as promote self worth through interaction with others. Local residents will make the Funky Monkey their “Third Place,” identifying with the images of local musicians and the youthful and refreshing interior.

The Market area is for relaxed conversationalists.

Lounge seating surrounded by display shelving combines relaxing and shopping.

The King Street area is the retailing zone.

FLOOR PLAN

A PLAN FOR PROFIT Inviting aromas of baked goods and coffee attract passers by. The circulation brings customers past and to retail displays. An open food prep area featuring cake decorating demonstrates quality food preparation and creativity.

The George Street area provides visual access and neighborhood interaction.

The Waterfront area is for individuals that want to be involved.

The South of Broad area is for relaxed and quiet dining.

SUSTAINABILITY

SITE SELECTION

INNOVATION IN DESIGN A RenewAir energy recovery ventilation system reduces air conditioning and heating energy costs as well as reduces the size of the equipment used for heating, cooling, and venting air.

The site offers public transportation and is located for increased foot traffic.

WATER EFFICIENCY Low flow toilets and faucets are provided in restrooms.

ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE The lighting power density allowance of 1.4 w/sq. ft. is reduced by 35%. All lighting fixtures use energy efficient lamps.

70% of all kitchen equipment installed is ENERGY STAR qualified equipment.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY All paints are low VOC, reducing the amount of airborne toxins.

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES Interior materials designated with the wheat sheaf symbol contain at least 25% recycled content.
