Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real attempt to build a flying machine and fly using it. In the 9th century he designed a winged machine, roughly resembling a bird like object.

In his most famous trial near Cordoba in Spain, Firnas flew upward for a few moments, before falling to the ground and seriously hurt himself.

His designs would unquestionably have been an inspiration for famed Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci's hundreds of years later.

Abu al-Qasim Abbas ibn Firnas ibn Wirdas al-Takurini, also known as Abbas ibn Firnas, Latinized Armen Firman, was a Berber Andalusian polymath: an inventor, astronomer, physicist, chemist, mathematician engineer, Andalusi musician, and Arabic-language poet. He was reported to have experimented with a form of flight. Wikipedia
