Dear Conversaciones de Salud Community, As we stand at the threshold of a new year, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've undertaken together.

Your unwavering support has been the bedrock of our mission to foster awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and substance use disorder, promote mental health, and advocate for preventive measures such as carrying Narcan.

In the spirit of growth and evolution, I am thrilled to share a monumental announcement: Conversaciones de Salud will now be available in printed edition! Date to be announced. You can anticipate receiving a tangible and insightful resource. This step is a testament to our commitment to reaching every corner of our multicultural communities, ensuring that valuable health information is accessible to all families.

I extend my deepest gratitude to each reader and supporter who has been part of this journey. Your engagement has been pivotal in shaping Conversaciones de Salud into a platform that transcends cultural boundaries, fostering Conversaciones de Salud that matter. Three Kings Day, Hispanic Gift-Giving Day

Three Kings Day, known as Tres Reyes, Día de Reyes, Día de los Reyes Magos, or Epiphany, is a poignant celebration in the Latin holiday season, culminating on January 6 and marking the close of Christmas. This day carries immense importance across Latin America, rivaling or even surpassing Christmas in significance. The celebration commemorates the visit of the Magi to Baby Jesus, signifying Christ's revelation to the gentiles.

Children eagerly anticipate gifts from the Three Kings, participating in the tradition of writing letters and leaving shoes outside their doors with grass and water for the camels on the night of January 5. As the rooster crows in the morning, children joyfully discover the gifts left by these revered figures.

The Three Kings are beloved not just for their role in the Nativity story but also for symbolizing the diverse heritage of humanity.

Representing Indigenous, European, and African roots, they embody the rich cultural amalgamation defining Latin America. While Asia may not be explicitly represented, the Three Kings from the Orient serve as a powerful symbol of global unity transcending individual heritages.

Beyond the cultural significance, the narrative of the wise men journeying beyond their realms to pay homage to another culture is a metaphor for the ultimate state of grace, highlighting the beauty of cultural exchange and understanding. ¡Feliz día de los Reyes!

Monday, Jan. 15th 2024 is Martin Luther King day.

Martin Luther King Jr., Day, in the United States, holiday (third Monday in January) honoring the achievements of the civil-rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Established as a federal holiday in 1983, it is usually celebrated with marches and parades and with speeches by civil rights and political leaders.

This year Monday, Jan. 15th, 2024 the federal holiday falls on the actual birthday of the celebrated civil rights leader who was assassinated more than a half a century ago.

As we mark the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are compelled to ponder: has the dream envisioned by this iconic leader become a reality for Latinos? Dr. King's profound impact transcended racial boundaries, inspiring figures like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta within the Latino community. Yet, if he were alive today, it's plausible that he would be at the forefront of collaborative efforts with Latinos, addressing the persistent issues of inequality.

Reflecting on Dr. King's legacy raises pertinent questions about its contemporary relevance. Sadly, the dream remains elusive. Educational and socioeconomic disparities persist, and discrimination is a harsh reality for both Blacks and Latinos. The significant civil rights issue of our time, synonymous with being Latino, revolves around immigration and the challenges faced by undocumented workers. TAINO'S THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE CARIBBEAN: HISTORY AND CULTURE KNOWLEDGE IS KEY TO EXISTENCE!

WHO WERE THE TAINO PEOPLE? The Taino, an Arawak people, were the major population group throughout most of the Caribbean. Their culture was divided into three major groups: the Western Taino, the Classic Taino, and the Eastern Taino, with other variations within the islands. The Classic Taino lived in eastern Cuba, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola (an island in the Caribbean Sea. It is the second largest island (after Cuba) of the West Indies, east of Cuba and west of Puerto Rico). The Republic of Haiti occupies the western three-eighths,[1] [2] the Dominican Republic the rest.

Hispaniola is one of two Caribbean islands in which there are two countries; the other is Saint Martin. ·

One of the great casiques and a true hero among the Taino people was Hatuey.

Hatuey fought valiantly for his people until he was captured and burned at the stake.

Today is the 508th anniversary of Hatuey's death. Hatuey saw the death, rape, destruction, dismemberment, burnings, hangings, torture and enslavement of the Taino instigated and allowed by Columbus, who claimed to be on a mission to spread the gospel. As Hatuey was tied to the stake to be burned alive, he was offered a chance to save his soul and go to heaven by accepting Christianity, if not, he was told his soul would be relegated to the eternal inferno known as hell. Hatuey asked if the Christians went to heaven. He was told they did. After hearing this and knowing what the 'Christians' had done to his people, Hatuey chose to go to hell where he wouldn't run into them again. Sad but true history... the kind you aren't taught in school.

Narcan vending machines Naloxone, widely recognized under the brand name Narcan, serves as a crucial life-saving medication, typically administered as a nasal spray to counteract the effects of opioid consumption. The adoption of this approach is gaining momentum across various communities in the United States. In 2023, a notable trend has emerged with vending machines dispensing overdose reversal drugs, including naloxone, at no cost. These machines also provide fentanyl testing strips, clean needles, and other items supporting harm reduction efforts.

Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health has launched a pilot project to offer county residents a potentially life-saving drug that can reverse an opioid overdose. If you or someone in your life could benefit from naloxone, (commonly known as Narcan®) please order today. Ramsey County residents can order ONE naloxone kit per address, while supplies last.

Naloxone kits include: Two doses of naloxone nasal spray.

Breathing barriers and gloves.

Directions for use and a list of community resources.

Free naloxone kits are funded by Minnesota’s settlements with opioid companies.
