Spring is in full bloom, and so is our April edition of Conversaciones de Salud E-Newsletter!

This month, we're diving into Hennepin County's lineup of events as part of the Opioid Framework. We dedicated 2 sections of this newsletter on crucial awareness campaigns for Alcohol and Stress Awareness Month. But that's not all – we're also celebrating the legacy of Don Eubanks, a remarkable figure in community service and advocacy. His dedication continues to inspire us all.

In our beloved Esquina Latina section, we're exploring the rich heritage of Puerto Rico and the fascinating world of beekeepers. From cultural traditions to environmental stewardship, there's so much to discover!

Opioid framework: April events and services

Join us for a series of events and services this April in Hennepin County, dedicated to opioid awareness and community support. Get equipped with life-saving skills at our 24 Naloxone training sessions, available both virtually and in-person across various locations.

Additionally, explore harm reduction and syringe services, treatment and recovery meetings (6 options available!).

And community connections like bingo nights, game nights, COVID vaccine clinics, speaker jams, and much more.

Alcoholism.

Alcoholism is a chronic and progressive mental health condition characterized by the compulsive use of alcohol despite long-term consequences. People with alcoholism generally develop a strong desire to drink and have difficulty controlling their alcohol intake. It is also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic condition characterized by a compulsive urge to consume alcohol despite negative physical, psychological, and social consequences. It is not a sign of weakness or lack of willpower, but rather a complex behavioral and impulse control disorder influenced by various factors such as genetics, environment, and life experiences.

The Harsh Impact of Alcohol on the Latino Community

Unfortunately, Latinos who choose to drink are more likely to consume higher volumes of alcohol than non-Hispanic Whites, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

While more Latinos have never had even one drink of alcohol than their white peers, more than 33% of these Latinos will have recurrent or persistent problems with alcohol compared, a higher rate than their white peers, according to a Salud America!

Recovery from a substance use disorder can be difficult, but hearing stories from others who are in recovery can help.

Substance use disorders can be challenging to treat or otherwise address. Many commonly used substances foster some level of physical dependency.

Additionally, substance use disorders can grow out of using substances to self-medicate a mental health condition. Treating any underlying mental health condition can increase the chances of recovery in these cases.

On March 21st, Minnesota commemorates Donald Eubanks Day, honoring the legacy of a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to serving and empowering communities. Don Eubanks was instrumental in expanding support programs and advocating for marginalized communities during his tenure at Ramsey Action Programs and Fathers Resource Center. As a social worker, chemical health director, and associate professor, he touched countless lives through mentorship and advocacy. In recognition of his lifelong commitment, Governor Tim Walz proclaimed March 21st as Don Eubanks Day.

In honor of this day and Don Eubanks' legacy, Carmen Robles and Associates LLC extends a warm welcome to Juanita Espinosa and Shirley Cain from the Indigenous community. We are proud to partner with them to continue Don's work of fostering inclusion and empowerment across diverse communities. Together, we aim to honor Don's memory by advancing his vision of a more equitable and compassionate society. Join us in celebrating Don Eubanks Day and honoring his lasting impact on Minnesota and beyond.
