Do’s and Don’ts To Raise a Reader

Reading is a fundamental skill our children need to grow and develop throughout their life.

Do:

Read to your child from the earliest age. Baby Board books are great from birth, they strong and durable. Discuss the book as you read. While reading discuss what you are reading or looking at.

Create “cozy time”! Cozy time is a connection between your child where you cuddle and create a connection of love and reading. Have them sit on your lap, or beside you.

Visit the library regularly. Do you know there are programs for kids of all ages throughout the school year and a program 5 days a week during the summer?

Find books they are interested in. Does your child like dogs? Comics? Their interest level will increase if the books are about something they like Don’t forget to try new subjects too!

Read yourself. Be a good role model for your child, read often

Limit Technology. Given the choice kids will choose a TV or a computer, or phone before a book

Don't:

Don’t push your child to learn how to read. Focus on creating a love for books Both the pictures and the stories, and they’ll want to learn

Don’t stop reading to your child. Even after your child can read, continue to have time where you and your child can read together. This will keep them interested as their skills develop.

As we prepare for Christmas and attempt to pick out that perfect gift for the children in our lives, keep books in mind!

Thanks to Brian, Elizabeth, Ward, Frikkie, Trevor and others for a very informative, interesting and downright fun tour of the Quintette mine. I am impressed by the progress made over such a short period of time in getting the mine up and producing. An excellent example of the ingenuity and hard work of British Columbians.

Join us January 10-13th, 2025 for one day or for all 4 full days of winter climbing in the beautiful frozen NEBC! Whether you are a seasoned ice climber a complete novice there is something for everyone around the remarkable frozen waterfalls of Tumbler Ridge.
