Exploring the Wild: Wildlife Awareness & Preparedness in Northeastern BC
Northeastern BC is home to some of Canada’s most breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. Whethe wheels, or motors, exploring our great outdoors has its risks. The backcountry is vast with an abundant amount of wildlife Encounters with wildlife are a part of the experience. Knowing what to do will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
Wildlife Safety Tips
Travel in Groups – Wildlife is less likely to approach a larger, noisier group.
Food- Carry food in sealed containers and properly store at height when overnighting.
Garbage - Pack in/pack out. Never leave your garbage behind. Leave no trace - the untouched landscape is beautiful, no need to add any personal touches.
Fires - Respect all fire bans. Fires should be in designated campsites and if you must have one, ensure there is plenty of water or fire extinguishing methods to put out the fire Use the pour/stir method when extinguishing a fire with water.
Make Noise – Reduce the risk of startling animals by calling out, clapping, or using bear bells.
Carry Bear Spray – Always have bear spray accessible and know how to use it properly in case of a close encounter.
Keep Pets Leashed – Loose dogs can provoke wildlife encounters, putting both you and your pet at risk.
Stay Alert – Watch for signs of wildlife activity, such as tracks, scat, or tree markings.
Respect Their Space – Never approach or attempt to feed wildlife. Observing from a safe distance protects both you and the animal.
Before you leave.
Research the area you plan to explore Check the weather conditions and any wildlife advisories. Carry essential survival gear, including a first aid kit, flashlight, fire starter, GPS/compass, and extra food and water Leave a detailed itinerary with more than one person you trust. Where you are going, with whom, approximate arture and arrival times. Rescue efforts in the case of an ergency will be expedited being aware of your approximate ereabouts

being prepared, staying aware, and respecting the process, we enjoy the beauty of Northeastern BC’s wilderness while xisting with its remarkable wildlife.

At Conuma, it's the people who power our success and this month, we're proud to spotlight one of the essential team members who keeps our operations connected and running smoothly: Stanley, IT Technician.
For Stanley, the best part of working at Conuma is the strong sense of community and teamwork. "The people here are genuinely passionate about what they do, and that energy is contagious," he shared. "It’s inspiring to collaborate across departments and see the commitment to safety, productivity, and excellence."
As an IT Tech, Stanley plays a vital role in ensuring the entire team has the tools and tech they need to thrive. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the work I do has a direct impact on keeping everyone connected, safe, and efficient.”
We asked Stanley about the best career advice he has received, his response was simple but impactful: "Focus on solving problems, not just completing tasks." This mindset has become a guiding principle in his career “It’s about making a lasting impact, not just ticking boxes.”
When asked what brings the most satisfaction, Stanley shared that supporting the team’s success and safety were at the top of the list. “I love knowing that my efforts behind the scenes help the team work better, faster, and safer every day.”
Thank you, Stanley, for your dedication, passion, and problem-solving mindset. Your work truly makes a difference!
