Memories of my brother J.A. Lara

The writing process in Soy Autor evoques an authentic experience of self discovery. The following piece is the result of the collaborative work between students and teachers to find the hear t of the story, through the publication of their first illustrated Memoir.

It all started on a dark night, in fact, the darkest of my life.

It rained so hard that the trees swayed very much and my anguished grew as I rushed to my house like a rabbit looking for its burrow.

When I finally arrived, I found my mother crying.

I tried everything to comfort her.

Once she finally calmed down, the rain also ceased.

My brother came by without knowing what had happened to our mother.

–“What’s wrong?” He asked.

–Nothing happens ... –I answered.

I left home and said goodbye, as an immigrant leaving home and family behind.

–What will you do? My brother asked me.

–Why do you care, now? –I told him.

–Because you’re my brother,” he answered with longing.

At that time I thought:

“my younger brother advised me, uh!”

But it did not care, just like every rebellious teenager.

–We’ll see each other soon, I told my brother as I left.

–You know how much I love you, brother! He replied.

I told him to take care of himself, and as a grandfather giving advice, he replied to me: –It is you, who has to take care.

Days later a “friend” proposed to me to do wrongdoing.

Looking for advice, I went to my best friend.

In spite of everything, as if we were professional criminals we planned the day, the time and the place we were going to see each other.

By that time, I couldn’t stop thinking about my brother and everything he had advised me.

Hours later

we went to do what we had planned on doing, without knowing that we were to fail. I was caught and put into prison.

I remember thinking of

what a fool I had been!

It was then when I felt

the world was coming over me,

as if everything that existed disappeared in

a second.

In the meantime, I thought of my mother and brother: What would they say? Did they think I’ve gone to the next world?

How would they feel to know that I am in prison?

Upon entering the prison, I just watched the iron door that separated me from the outside. My gaze fixed to the sky wondering

what would be happening out there?

Inside my cell, I remembered every moment, every day I spent with my brother and all the games we played.

Some memories were repeated over and over again.

I imagined as children when we had fun as if we were the only two children in the world.

Also, I remembered the sad day I left.

When my mother took him to see me in prison, I

cried like a child.

Once he arrived, he said: “I told you. You did not listen to me�.

When he visits me, I feel happy as a child playing with his favorite toy.

Whenever he comes to see me, he brings interesting news.

I feel fine now.

I adapted to this place and my mother is happy to have me, because, she said, there are other mothers who can not even

hug their children.
