Looking back over our 24 previous issues of Style on Sunday, we certainly have taken a lot of pictures! So, the above quote rings true, especially when I think of all the wonderful moments that have gone into creating all of our past features.

It’s with that in mind that we chose to reminisce a little this edition.

We have featured so many outstanding personalities on our covers, and we wanted the opportunity to catch up with them again – so we did. You can read the latest news from many of our past interviewees on page 26. And trust us, they’re still looking as glamorous as ever!

And, of course, we’re thrilled to present two new beautiful cover stars this issue – Clare and Pauline Agius. The sisters are famous faces on Maltese television and most of us know their on-screen personalities rather well. But what about off-screen? You can enjoy reading all about their private personas and wonderful sisterly bond on page 19.

Naturally, we are also embracing the fun and frolics of the upcoming season. To celebrate our 25th issue, we held an indulgent dinner party for a few select guests, and the results of that fabulous, festive evening are on page 84. Meanwhile our home section, on page 99, also provides plenty of inspiration on how to make this Christmas your most stylish yet.

We’re also pleased to have packed this issue with so many other favourites – our chic fashion story on page 45, our French-inspired cuisine on page 107 and our see-and-be-seen Papped! pages.

Sisters… In Style

Bubbly, bright and endearing – on-screen and off – Clare and Pauline Agius are two of the most wellknown faces on Maltese TV. Despite the eight year age gap between them, they enjoy a palpable bond that adds an engaging extra dimension to their dynamic personalities. Here, the sisters candidly chat to Style on Sunday about the differences that define them, the passions they share and their exciting plans for the future.

It’s hard to remember a time when Clare and Pauline Agius weren’t smiling back at us from beyond the television set. Such has been their success, that they have become an ingrained ingredient of our viewing experience – we’re used to having them with us, laughing through a breakfast chat show, cooking through lunch or

fuelling a debate late into the night.

With their trademark dark hair and bright smiles, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were just months apart. But there is actually a gap of eight years between the sisters, and they each bring very unique traits to the table – whether on screen, or behind the scenes on the TV productions they share.

But different or not, it is clear that Clare and Pauline’s success comes, in part at least, from the complete trust they put in each other, and their bond is wonderful to watch.

This, in their words, is their story.

Clare: “No matter what’s happening in our lives, our mum somehow manages to bring us all together on a Saturday for lunch.

Some people don’t know that there’s actually four of us in our family – two girls and two boys; we’re very close in general, but there’s no denying that Pauline and I share a particular bond.

“Our connection has definitely got stronger in recent years.

I went travelling when I was in my teens and Pauline was just 10 or so at the time. I remember leaving a little girl behind and returning to a near-teenager! It was quite a shock to see how grown up she was, and we started to get to know each other on a whole new level. We became inseparable over time and we share so much of our lives now.

“That said, we don’t really share a sense of style and, even though I am the older sister, I probably look up to Pauline’s fashion sense and not the other way around. Our work has given us a cohesive ‘look’ that works for us on-screen, but off

camera my clothes are definitely more laid back, especially as I am usually running around after my son, Luke, who's two.”

Pauline: “Style-wise I enjoy any excuse to dress up. I embrace colour and current trends. I also go through phases when it comes to my accessory ‘of the moment’ – it could be handbags, hats or shoes. I like to dress according to my mood and give outfits a twist.

“As sisters, we work together and really enjoy that. Clare actually initiated our business partnership. Back when I was 18, she suddenly needed an assistant and I took on the role while at university. But it soon became clear that she needed full-time help, so I committed to it completely and joined her onscreen in 2001. To this day we regularly present together, but most of what we do is behind the scenes producing. We’re both business-minded, although

I have quite a few favourite designers, and my style can go from Armani to Vivienne Westwood in a flash.

get time to spend with family and close friends, however, I try to make it as relaxed as possible.

My favourite shopping destination tends to be the UK, as I rarely find time to shop locally, unless it’s particular favourites.

I’m passionate about everything I set my mind to, and also about the well-being of humanity in general. It’s important to find a balance between the physical, mental and spiritual.

I would describe my style as a mix of quirky, smart and elegant – although jeans and flat boots are a staple.

Clare: “Even though Pauline joined me in the business, I never saw her as following in my footsteps. On the contrary, she is incredibly talented in her own right, with organisational skills that put me to shame!

I have always been more sporadic and live my life in bursts, whereas Pauline is great at bringing everyone and everything together. I am the one who comes up with the crazy ideas, while she pulls me back down to earth to make them happen. We complement each other very well.”

Pauline: “We do share characteristics too though, including a way of thinking.

We’re both very positive, and live and let live. We know that nothing comes from nothing and are completely committed to our jobs and families. It’s also reassuring to know that we can rely on each other completely,

and we bounce off one another constantly, going from one idea or project to the next.

Clare: “The development of Ilsien in-Nisa is definitely a combined highlight for us.

While we have numerous separate projects, that is one that we have worked on together, almost from start to finish.

When we launched in October 2011 it was an instant success, so that was very exciting. I think our audiences relish the relaxed style it’s presented in and we enjoy bringing our true personalities to the stage. It is a show that we produce from the heart and it gives us great satisfaction to give opinions and ideas that have made people think a little differently.

“On the contrary Simshar has been a very personal journey and one I couldn’t share with Pauline. I value each of my projects based on how much they enriched me. Simshar touched my life in so many ways, both because it has been seen by so

My favourite travel destination would have to be Maldives. It’s incredibly relaxing over there.

many people, and because it was a role that really challenged me.

Now that the film has made it into the running for consideration to win an Oscar, the hype is back again. The final list of Oscarnominated films won’t be unveiled until early 2015 but we have already made a bit of a splash in the US; we even had a poster up in Hollywood, where the film was recently screened.”

Pauline: “In the meantime, I am looking forward to the release of a travel programme that I filmed earlier this year. It was also an incredible journey of discovery, as I travelled to destinations including Dubai, Turkey and Nepal, and saw and experienced things I could never have imagined. Travel programmes are particularly interesting for me as they take you beyond the role of the presenter; you end up gaining unbelievable insight into a different people and culture. Plus, nothing is ever prepared on location in the same way that it would be in the studio, so I really had to be on my toes!”

Clare: “Of course, the upcoming festive season is our combined focus now. It is such a family-oriented event in our house and we love every moment of it. We’re quite excessive when it comes to food and fun, and we all love to cook so Christmas is the ideal time to experiment. This year we’ve all decided we’re not going to go overboard, but I’m pretty sure we decided that last year too!”

Pauline: “Finally, Clare and I are already thinking of the next TV season too, which will launch in October 2015. Our shows are always the result of a combination of what we hope to achieve professionally and where we are in our personal lives. Whether we are stimulated by travel, conversation or our growing families, we hope to keep attracting the kind of projects that mean something to us on various levels. We both believe 2015 will be a big year for us, and we are expecting some very significant changes too. There is a lot to be excited about.” ¥

“I remember being quite stressed on the day as I was very busy at the time, but I truly enjoyed being pampered. I also remember that the team was very professional and welcoming, and I felt as though I was in good hands.

“Since March 2010, I’ve been to Tanzania with the Mission Fund.

It was a project that really changed me, as I was devastated to see how some people live. I’ve also worked on Xarabank and our foundation has since raised €600,000 for charity. Nowadays, I’m playing the part of Lina in the soap opera Hbieb u Ghedewwa.”

“Style was one of my first opportunities to be on the cover of a magazine, so it was pretty memorable. Jo made it a relaxed experience, and I think the shoot and interview were very true to myself.

“A lot has happened since June 2010. My children have grown up a lot, and Inspire has become somewhat of a household name. I’ve also started other foundations, like Empire, and I’ve done a few more challenges and set the world record for a 27-days-in-27-countries running marathon. I now have my own consultancy business too.”

“As the first cover of Style, I think I helped kick01 start a very good thing, and it seems to have come so far since then. I have very good memories of our ‘shoot day’, particularly of being pampered and made up – I’m normally in a hurry so I don’t have time for that.

“Not much has changed since December 2008. My son, Michael, who was six years old at the time, is now 12.

I feel life has progressed rather than changed!”

“The Style shoot happened just before Christmastime, a few months after Papà had passed away. Christmas was a special time for the whole family, so I dreaded having to face our first one without him. I remember we spoke about it during the interview, and I felt that voicing my thoughts actually helped.

“On the day of the shoot, which took place at my house, my mother unexpectedly dropped by and ended up joining in. What was funny was that our mother, who had come completely unprepared for a photographic session, looked the best out of the three of us; but then again, she always does!

“The Style shoot happened on a really nice sunny day, and the team made me feel incredibly relaxed.

It was a long day, but the end results made it worth it.

“Since March 2011, I’ve performed with my band Monroe at many events, including the London New Year’s Day Parade in Parliament Square with a TV viewership of 280 million and a 500,000-strong live audience. I was also chosen to be Mila Kunis’s body double and stand-in on upcoming feature film Jupiter Ascending, and have worked on many interesting modelling jobs including being Nicole Scherzinger’s hand double in a Müller advert.”

“When the team came over for the Style shoot, I had just got my Labrador puppy and he was running around with the clothes… it was crazy! Jo obviously loved him… there’s a picture of him in the magazine too, which makes for a nice memory as he is all grown up now.

“I’ve developed quite a lot since October 2011. The Style cover has helped me achieve somewhat of an independent success and it was great ‘marketing’ for me as an individual. Since the cover, my mother and I have also branched out into luxury accommodation.”

“The shoot was a very different and new experience for me and, despite the fact that it took a whole day, it was an organised chaos in my house which I truly enjoyed. All five of my children were well behaved too, and the photos with them looked lovely.

“My priorities have changed since December 2012, however. Whereas I still love my work and I still have a huge passion for family law, I find that my children, and my need to be with them, has by far superseded anything that I could have ever imagined possible.”

“Being asked to be on the cover of Style was definitely the nicest part of the whole experience. It’s closely followed by the positive feedback I received from others, and, I think, for someone who’s not a model, this experience was invaluable. I also liked the fact that the photos felt very ‘me’.

“There have been no babies or lottery wins since March 2013, but I have moved on quite a bit! Just eight months ago, I opened my own salon in Sliema. I’ve also flown the nest, and moved into my own place.”

“In a part of my interview in Style I had said that I was lucky to have found my life partner. A few weeks after it was published, my then-boyfriend mentioned it and said that he felt the same way, and asked me to marry him.

So Style may well have influenced my life rather significantly!

“Having my photo taken with my children was one of the best moments of the whole experience. They were both very excited to be on the magazine and so was I, as it really brought memories of my teenage modelling years rushing back.

“Apart from the fact that I now have a few extra hours to myself thanks to my children being at school, not much has changed since December 2013. Chez Philippe is still doing well and my life mostly revolves around my little ones.”

“Jo and I have been friends since school, so it was great to take our friendship from pyjama parties to working on a magazine cover together. Being interviewed by her was one of the best moments and I was really touched by her personal interjections when I read the article. It was also interesting to be in front of the camera for a while, working with some of my team from Simshar, including make-up artist Jackie Grima.

“It’s only nine months since the issue but it’s been quite a journey.

Simshar had its premiere and it’s been accepted into the running for the shortlist of nominees for an Oscar. Although we’re very far from a prize, we’re still thrilled! I was also recently signed by top Hollywood management company Management 360, while Simshar will be back at the Embassy Cinema for a second time for two weeks in January.”

“I was very excited about the whole Style shoot, and I loved every minute of it, including watching everything from the jewellery to the location come together through the pictures.

“With my cover being only two issues ago, my main concerns have been the Junior Eurovision with Federica and Gaia, and the Malta Eurovision with Amber and Christabelle. Now that Amber’s won, it’s the actual Eurovision that’s on my mind. I’m still hoping to get married soon, and my son, Beppe, has since started school. It’s all pretty exciting, really!”

“The best part for me was 23 sharing the shoot with Federica.

We started to meet more and more since then, and our friendship has developed.

“A lot has happened since the shoot six months ago. I represented Malta at A Next Star in Romania, where I placed second and I was a guest on Una Stella Sta Nascendo in Italy. A few weeks ago, we launched the theme song for the Junior Eurovision called ‘#Together’, which was to be sung by children from 16 different countries on the night. We also held Federica, Gaia & Friends Live In Concert.”

“I really enjoyed the shoot and loved working with the photographer, Kurt Paris, as he’s really easygoing. The Style shoot was my first shoot with Gillian and Gaia, so it’ll always be special.

“Since the cover I had a concert with Vincenzo Carni, and Gaia and I performed with Joseph Calleja at Federica, Gaia & Friends Live In Concert. Junior Eurovision was a brilliant experience and I learnt a lot. I am now in Form 1 so I have to focus on school more and more.”

“The aftermath of the shoot was great. People kept ‘liking’ my photo on Facebook and calling me up… I’m not that used to these things, really! The actual day was also very particular for me, and it’s quite funny how the whole team and I clicked so well.

Finding Hope While families everywhere raise a glass in celebration of this special time of year, many others will be looking back at the tragedies that have devastated their lives. Here, Jo Caruana speaks to three individuals still reeling from the earth-shattering, to find how hope, positivity and courage have helped them to carry on.

Nationalist Party deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami hit the headlines earlier this year when he was diagnosed with cancer of the shoulder and rushed to the UK for treatment. Although his shoulder blade had to be removed, Dr Fenech Adami has found hope and appreciation in his recovery.

“Back in February I started to feel a pain in my arm but I didn’t think much of it. It was the sort of pain that I could cope with and I ignored it for a few months, until the MEP elections were over and everything calmed down.

“When I finally had some time I went to the doctor to check it out, and I was referred for a standard MRI. Days later I received a phone call stating that the doctors had spotted what they referred to as a ‘cyst’, and that I needed a second MRI. I imagined that I would pop in a couple of weeks from then but, when they said I needed to go in straightaway, I realised it might be more serious.

“The second MRI showed a clear growth on my shoulder and it was now referred to as a ‘tumour’, which changed things considerably. Then, when the news came back that it was cancerous, all hell broke loose.

“The type of cancer was diagnosed as sarcoma, and it was deemed to be in a very unusual position and of a rare type.

Arrangements were immediately made for me to go to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the UK, which specialises in this type of cancer. There the diagnosis was confirmed and it was made clear that I would need treatment as soon as possible.

“I went into surgery on 20 October.

It turned out to be a four-and-a-half hour operation that has left me with a 44cm scar and no shoulder blade, but it was done to save my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Just five days after the operation I was out of hospital with the pain under control. I currently have limited mobility but I hope to gain back at least 50 per cent of it with regular physiotherapy.

“Now I feel well, although the road to recovery takes a while and the operation has taken its toll. Emotionally it was very hard. I woke up one day and everything was normal but, by the evening, everything had changed. That has altered my perspective too and many of the things that used to worry me don’t anymore. I have come to appreciate how wonderful life is; when you start missing out on the most basic of things, you quickly realise how lucky you are to be healthy.

“Personally I have already said that I will fight this battle but, of course, I don’t know whether I will win. The stark reality is that a good percentage of us do not make it. Of course I want to survive but sending the message that you only survive if you want to and fight hard enough is wrong. Some people can’t and don’t.

“Today my advice is to really care

I have come to appreciate how wonderful life is; when you start missing out on the most basic of things, you quickly realise how lucky you are to be healthy.

for your health. If you have pain or discomfort, get it checked out because it could save your life. From day one I prayed that I would stay in control – the biggest danger is in losing hope.

“As a family, we chose to go through this with openness and honestly, throughout the ups and downs, which I believe helped us. We have learnt that we’re better together and life can’t all be roses. I am very proud of my wife and sons for coping the way they did.”

On 1 January 2012, Claire Zammit Xuereb and her husband Duncan awoke to their worst nightmare. Having celebrated their first New Year at home with their family, a perpetrator intruded their house early in the morning, and Duncan was killed. In the years that have followed Claire has struggled to pick up the pieces – having just lost her beloved husband and best friend, Duncan, and with their little twins still only a couple of months old. Nearly three years on, Claire explains the strength that has helped her to carry on.

“In the days after the tragedy I was barely existing. For the first year it was only our little ones that kept me going. From the moment I realised that Duncan was not responding to me, after literally giving his last breath to save ours, I never stopped feeling alone. Everything was taken away and my comfort zone was ripped apart.

Regardless of the enormous amount of help I had, and all the love I constantly receive, that sudden realisation that I was alone still haunts me to this day.

“I recall those initial moments. I remember

going over to my little ones, who had just been woken by the police, and, through my tears, finding the courage to tell them everything would be ok, and that we loved them so much. Today I realise that was Duncan’s voice speaking through me and giving me the strength to take my first steps as a single mum. I had seen him save our lives and his fighting spirit gave me the ability to want to raise our children in the way we had planned, together in love. When I felt weak, I literally lived on in his courage.

“Today my philosophy is not to waste this life that Duncan has given me, on the contrary I want to live it in any way I can. I will make sure that we make the most of it, as nothing will ever compare with the value of his life. I make sure that every day, I work towards stepping up that value by making him my motivation. That motivation is still very much there and all the feelings and emotions are still very vivid, with the only difference being that the trauma has almost left my system.

“Trauma does things to you; it numbs you while giving you a thick skin.

Then, as the trauma leaves, harsh reality kicks in and you become aware of that ‘foreverness’. I believe I only properly started grieving Duncan this year.

“Once everyday life gets closer to normal, the sense of not seeing your loved one forever, kicks in. My grieving has been staggered because I am constantly interrupted by work and the children, and I would never let my grief come between me and them. In a way, that has been good as the process has been staggered, but it has also been extremely prolonged. Each day, life feels a little more normal but this is also when I need to be my strongest. I have found that having goals has helped; they have been crucial in keeping me on track.

It is crucial that pain is tackled, broken down and accepted.

Facing your pain will help you deal with it.

“Now that I am in my third year I feel like I have finally started to breathe regularly, and to feel comfortable in my own shoes. I am learning not to be afraid – of the dark, my bed, knives (however small or large), strange noises and strangers. I have learnt that, if I allow these issues to overcome me, I will further build barriers away from normality. I literally exhaust myself to keep up with the children’s needs, plus with those at work, home and my own needs.

I thank God for that however, as it helps me sleep at night. Not being able to sleep would literally be the end of me; it’s the only time I get to recharge. I am trying to live as normal a life as possible. Today I thank all those closest to me for having helped me in the way they did, as, otherwise, my life would have been impossible to cope with.

“I have learnt so much. For instance, that if I allow my issues to become a problem, I will only be building barriers between what we call ‘normality’ and the way I live.

I would also be alienating myself from those around me, as they avoid using certain words or actions, and eventually avoid me entirely.

Trying to live a normal life as much as you can is the only way to fight trauma. It is the hardest but best long-term way to truly free yourself from it as much as you can.

“I have also learnt that the pain from missing Duncan, our home and our life together, will never go away really. People who go through pain need to learn how to contain that pain. In time you learn to accept and to live with it. It is crucial that that pain is tackled, broken down and accepted.

Facing your pain will help you deal with it.

“Today I have learnt to accept the unacceptable. This has taught me to accept many other things that are so trivial now. I also appreciate life so much more – every split second of it. I have learnt to stop to smell the roses. Something new that Duncan had introduced me to, and which I now embrace.

“We all have pain, in one way or another. It is all relative. It is crucial that it is tackled. Without acknowledging the pain, and accepting it, we can never come close to overcoming it. No man is an island. We cannot hide our pains as they will resurface and manifest. Facing our pain helps us heal. Keeping it inside is the worst thing anyone can do.

“I later discovered that our perpetrator was a victim himself, having seen his parents killed when he was a child. This time we were his victims. This news gave the book I am writing even more insight.

It reinforced my reasoning of accepting pain, breaking it down, feeling all the sharp edges, and digesting each piece, and eventually mastering them so as to heal. We obviously cannot do all this alone, we need to be helped by those we are comfortable with. Sharing our pain will only makes us feel better, as we exchange it with comfort and love. We can only make room for new, positive feelings by removing the negative ones.”

The dangers of the Internet are very real and both adults and children need to be aware of that.

Winston Zahra Jnr

The well-known Zahra family faced an unimaginable tragedy earlier this year, when 15-year-old Lisa Maria Zahra was found dead at Dingli Cliffs. While the due process at law continues and a teacher from her school is being charged in the criminal court with her wilful homicide, among other charges, her family, including her cousin Winston Zahra Jnr, is keen to secure her legacy and find hope through this tragedy. With that in mind, the Lisa Maria Foundation was recently launched in her name.

“Coming through any tragedy isn’t easy.

From the second we heard about Lisa Maria’s death, family support became everything and we pulled together to help Uncle Tony, Lisa’s father, to cope with the worst thing that can possibly happen to any parent.

“The death of a child is unbearably tragic whatever the circumstances. But, knowing that Lisa Maria’s death could have been avoided makes it that much harder to deal with. As is natural, we have spent hours wondering if we could have done more. Could there have been something said or something done that could have avoided the tragic circumstances? A tragedy like this brings with it a million questions and they can quickly lead you down a very negative spiral.

“From the beginning, though, I made a very conscious effort to keep positive. I felt that this was the best way to support my

Lisa Ma ria Zahra uncle. I knew that whatever I was feeling was a million times worse for him, and the only way through this was by ensuring we all rallied round and supported him to the best of our ability. That has been hard, especially as I have researched the case in considerable detail, and discovered so much about what goes on online and about the pressures our young people face. I am not a person that is easily shocked, however I have been horrified by what I found, especially with the lack of processes in areas pertaining to due diligence in the employment of people who have a responsibility to care for children and in the realms of social media.

“That is what sparked the idea for the Lisa Maria Foundation. We believe there is a lot that can be done to protect other young people and we are setting out to do exactly that. It is also helping my uncle and the rest of our family to remain more positive through this difficult time.

“The foundation is a voluntary, non-profit organisation with an over-arching objective to safeguard children and the young from harm.

It has three clear objectives. The first is to help educational institutions or organisations where

adults have a duty of care to children or young people in their recruitment process. We will be helping them to better profile their teams – whether teachers, admin staff, cleaners and so on. This is all about helping the profession and ensuring that only the right people work in these areas and reducing the risk of people who are not fit for purpose slipping into the system.

“Secondly, we will be promoting a code of behaviour that prescribes the appropriate boundaries between adults and young people.

We have to re-establish boundaries between adults with a duty of care and their young charges. I believe that boundaries have been eroded completely over the years. I remember clear lines between myself and my teachers when I was growing up, but they seem to have disappeared today. Because of the influence of the media and social media, access to information has become effortless and ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ aren’t so clearly defined. There are lines that shouldn’t be crossed between an adult and a young person. It is evident that

too much familiarity has crept in and that not all educators are equipped to deal with this. What is acceptable and what’s not? There are some great teachers out there who know exactly what to do and how to behave but many others who do not and who possibly have lack of guidance in this area. We plan to release clear guidelines to help make these boundaries more understandable once again.

“Finally, our third remit will be to help educate adults and children about the dangers of social media. Social media is not just Facebook; it can be far darker than that and I have come across sites that made my blood run cold. I have read through countless conversations between young people and predators, using language that is derogatory, sexually explicit and vindictive – and it’s all there for our children to find at the click of a button. The dangers of the Internet are very real and both adults and children need to be aware of that. This is unchartered water, and we need to do what we can do

to educate people to the best of our ability.

We are already working with international experts in this field and we will be lobbying for better informative campaigns.

“The foundation has certainly given our family something positive to focus on, but that doesn’t detract from the void that has been left by Lisa Maria’s death. This will be my uncle’s first Christmas without his precious daughter and that will no doubt be extremely hard. The 19th of every month is always a challenge now, and her recent birthday – her 16th birthday – was hugely traumatic for the family, but most especially for Tony. THE MAKERS OF FIGEAC WINE ON MALTA ‘MISSION’ For the aficionados who know a good bottle of wine when they see it, Château Figeac needs little introduction. Martina Said meets the Manoncourt family matriarch and her daughter, who, together with the rest of their family, head the Château Figeac wine estate in the beautiful region of Bordeaux.

Château Figeac is a staggeringly imposing and historic estate in the charming town of SaintEmilion in Bordeaux, France, comprised of 54 hectares of land, 40 of which are nurtured to produce some of the best wine this region in France has to offer. The estate shares its name with one of the most renowned wines that its earth produces – Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé de SaintEmilion, which the late Thierry Manoncourt, the man who created the Figeac style, worked tirelessly to perfect throughout his years of hard labour.

I meet Thierry’s wife, Madame Marie France Manoncourt, and one of her daughters, Blandine de Brier Manoncourt, at the Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux during their brief trip to Malta, both of whom were keen to share their experiences as ambassadors of this world-renowned

and highly ranked wine.

“It is a privilege for my family and I to own and run such a prestigious château, which represents part of the heritage of France,” says Madame Manoncourt. “We feel that it is our duty to receive as many people and wine-lovers as possible at Château Figeac, to share the experience with them.”

“Inheriting Château Figeac does not mean inheriting a financial asset,” explains Blandine. “The estate is a living system that interacts with everything around it; the soil, the vines, the people who work for us – some of them for many years, the neighbours, the people who sell the wine. And it is our job, my job, as one of the people inheriting the estate, to make the conditions as good

as possible for this living system to continue moving forward.”

By no coincidence, Château Figeac vintage wines have reached celebrity status in various parts of the globe, as

the family has been travelling since 1967 to promote and distribute them. “Our most important markets are mainly European, including Belgium, England, Holland, Germany,

Switzerland, and recently Prague, the Czech Republic and Malta, as well as India,” they explain. “It is also very important for us to promote the culture of wine in general in emerging markets like India and the Far East, not just Figeac.”

“I can remember my father Thierry, saying we have to go to Japan with our wine,” says Blandine. “People in Bordeaux used to say ‘no, they only drink Saki’, but he insisted – they have the culture, the cuisine and the tradition, and we were able to give them the knowledge of the wine. For a long time now, Château Figeac has had some big fans in Japan.”

Château Figeac has enjoyed some superlative vintages over the years, but one in particular is very dear to Marie France’s heart, as she jovially recounts how it led her to her husband to be. “I have many favourites, but the first one I tasted was the 1947. One day in 1955, my friend and I were going on a picnic, and we missed the group we were supposed to be joining. A charming man with a sports car drove up to us

and invited us to accompany him to the seaside – when we noticed that he had a bottle of Château Figeac with him, we were quite impressed and decided we must join him.

That is how Thierry and I met, and we were married a year later. Besides this, my other favourite vintages are 1959, 1961 and 1982.”

“My preferred vintage is 1990,” says Blandine. “It is powerful but also very rich, very complex, but still fresh. More recently, the 2005 and 2010 vintages have also been great.

Some people say the 2010 is one of the best Figeacs ever.”

As for this year’s production, Madame Manoncourt says it turned out to be a miraculous wine: “the climate in July and August was terrible, very cold and wet, but we had a fantastically dry September and October. Our vineyard is mainly cabernet-based therefore the grapes ripen a bit later, so we were able to wait and make the best that we could out of them. Our technical team is saying it is going to be a very good Figeac.”

Asked to share his thoughts on Château Figeac wine, he says, “it is an icon, a mythic wine for those who like classic wines.

To my belief, a great wine must have a number of attributes – it must, of course, taste good, be drinkable, have recognisability, a connection with the terroir, and must have the capability of ageing. Figeac has all of these things and, for those who seek the convivial part of drinking wine while eating and sharing, Figeac is an inspiration.” ¥

Nissan ups the game with the launch of the new X-Trail Style test-drives Nissan’s all-new X-Trail.

Nissan was arguably a catalyst in the revolution that led to the creation of a whole army of middle-sized crossovers that have been launched, one-by-one, by practically all car manufacturers over the past years. It seems that the crossover revolution took off or accelerated when Nissan launched the first generation of its Qashqai eight years ago.

The Qashqai immediately hit the ground running and the current generation of Qashqai (which we incidentally featured on Style Test Drive’s debut) is undoubtedly one of the best crossovers in its class segment.

The new X-Trail has all the hallmarks of another subtle revolution. Make no mistake – this is no make-over – Nissan has gone to the drawing board and has spared no effort to rebuild the X-Trail from scratch.

The only resemblance to its

predecessor is in the name they share; other than that Nissan has created a brand new model, a better one by some distance.

Let’s start with looks.

Traditionally the X-Trail was renowned for its practicality, reliability and as a big all-rounder SUV. It was never renowned or loved for its looks. That is history as Nissan has clearly invested significantly in the design of the new X-Trail, which is much better styled, has a contemporary

design edge and looks classy and sophisticated as much as it is robust and practical. What is also clear is that rather than building on the previous X-Trail, Nissan has decided to build on and evolve on the current generation of Qashqai. In fact they share the same platform and visually you could tell that they are siblings. Of course, the X-Trail has more presence – it is longer, higher and more robust.

From a technological point

of view, the revolution cannot be more pronounced. In fact, driving the new X-Trail is no gentle reminder of the technological advances in the automotive industry. We test

drove the X-Trail Tekna which is jam packed with extras and the technological features are simply impressive. For instance, the new X-Trail is equipped with Traffic Sign Recognition, which means that whilst we were conducting the test drive, the X-Trail kept us informed of speed limits and other relevant information as it has an advanced system that can actually read road signs.

Style Verdict Forget its predecessor; the new X-Trail goes straight up in the league with the best mid-range to large SUVs. It gives you practicality, space, seven seats if you need them, class and elegance. One can safely conclude that the new X-Trail is definitely one of the best in its class.

Another interesting technological feature is the High-beam Assist.

If you’re driving the X-Trail with the high beams on and the system detects oncoming traffic, it will automatically turn the high beams off. Once the traffic passes, the system will turn the high beams back on again.

On the equipment front, both the X-Trail Acenta (which costs €32,950) and the Tekna (€36,950) come with an impressive line-up of extras and equipment that would normally be classified as optional with other brands. For instance the Acenta comes with 17 inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, seven seats, six airbags, electric folding mirrors, dual auto air-

conditioning, Hill Start Assist, LED Signature DTRL, Idle Stop, five-inch Colour TFT Combimeter, auto headlamp, rain sensing wipers, front and rear sensors, and much more.

On top of that, the Tekna is equipped with a power sunroof, navigation system (including Maltese maps), leather heated seats and electric driver seat.

Nissan has made a conscious effort to ensure that the elegant and sophisticated pitch in the exterior design is matched with an impeccable interior and a level of equipment and specifications that are second to none.

Both the Acenta and the Tekna are equipped with a 1.6 litre diesel engine which delivers an

impressive 130bhp. The X-Trail holds the grip on the roads, has accurate steering and delivers a pleasantly sporty feel on the steering. It manages to give a bit of both feelings really – a sporty SUV experience and at the same time a touch of sophistication and elegance. ¥

British expat JIM DUNN is a writer and PR advisor. He has written two books, the first a 'how to' book on PR which is in use today by students; the second is called Very Private and Public Relations – a memoir on his life and his partnership with Arthur Whieldon.

Jim and Arthur, who now live between Malta, Majorca and London, kindly invited us into their home for the evening – a home that is very much tailored to fabulous entertaining!

Before we moved to Malta, Arthur and I had no idea how lively the social life was here! In fact, we quickly realised we needed a larger dining room as ours has grown impractical for our growing circle of friends. So when we bought this part of the house as an extension, the dining room became our first priority.

If you can stretch your budget, hire some outside help, whether a cook or waiter. This will save you time and effort, and you will probably enjoy yourself more – ensuring your guests relax more too.

When it comes to conversation, I find that a calm host will always make the guest more relaxed, which will lead to natural conversation. Do avoid talk of politics, religion and the Royal Family (although they can make things more fun if you don’t mind the noise!). I have to say that I have never experienced a lack of conversation at Maltese dinner parties, which is wonderful.

Experimenting with different colour schemes for Christmas is not only a breath of fresh air but also an original statement. One of my favourites for 2014 is lime green and aqua blue, set against a white and silver tree.

Setting the mood during the festive season is key, especially if you’re hosting. Warm chestnuts and spiced mulled wine served on a console decorated with polished red or green apples and cinnamon sticks is a great way to greet people.

Prints and patterns will make a huge statement in 2015, and hand-made crafts (weaving, knotting, quilting and so on) will be evident in many accessories and furnishings.

Prints will still be all the rage next year, particularly on shirts and kimonos. Hats are set to make a huge comeback, too! Her namesake brand, SEFFARRUGIA, has become renowned for its silk accessories, and she is now venturing into the worlds of prêt-à-porter and soft furnishings.

Journalist KIM DALLI is well-known for both her articles in the Times of Malta, as well as for her acting talent in TV favourites including l-Evangelisti and Deceduti. A keen conversationalist with excellent current affairs knowledge, Kim helped to keep the chats and debates lively and fun throughout the dinner party.

Festive formal can be a tricky dress code to get right, but a jumpsuit – not necessarily glittery or shiny – is a great alternative to a long dress. When it comes to men, a cravat tucked into a shirt and a pair of navy plaid trousers should do the trick!

It’s definitely important to get the mix of people right at a dinner party. The other guests and I are all involved in the creative sphere in one way or another, so we gelled brilliantly. Our conversations included everything from hobbies and careers, to history and ghosts! There was never a dull moment.

Some staple items to have on hand for the Christmas season are a plaid coat, silk bow ties and beautiful woollen scarves for men, and box pleated midi skirts and twillys for women.

A comfortable-yet-stylish pair of flat boots or a lovely mohair jumper make great gifts for the woman in your life. Men are a bit harder to buy for, but a silk tie or a pair of patterned socks can prove useful.

As a journalist, current and future affairs are of great interest to me – and 2015 is likely to be an interesting year. My predictions are that the spring hunting referendum will feature heavily in public discourse in the coming months; if it is held, it would be the first time the Maltese public would have exercised its right to an abrogative referendum.

I think we will keep talking about instability in the Middle East and western Asia, and the situation in Libya. Locally, I think transport, traffic issues and the new bus operator will keep chins wagging! Kim

Actor THOMAS CAMILLERI recently moved back to Malta from London, after a number of years working professionally in shows such as Legally Blonde and Les Misérables on the West End. Now working as a brand strategist, he also founded the food, lifestyle and discovery blog, Dustandbells.com, with his sister Teri.

I love entertaining, but I actually love the run up to a party more than anything. When it comes to getting the menu right, it should be a balance between something that’s simple enough to give you time to entertain, but that will also show you off. I recommend beef wellington, because it can be prepared hours in advance and then popped into the oven an hour before you need to serve it.

If you’re cooking for a few friends, you can’t beat a leg of lamb. Rub it well with butter, salt and pepper, and stud it with rosemary and garlic before you chuck it in the oven. For perfect roast potatoes, boil them for 10 minutes, then, once drained, close the lid and bash them around so that you get that fluffy, crunchy skin when you roast them later.

I love festive parties because everyone makes such an effort.

Plus, it is the time of year when most people living overseas return for a few days, and they’re usually up for a party!

How to roast a goose (or turkey): Start by brining the goose or turkey in a water and salt solution to introduce added moisture.

Insert butter – plain or herbed – between the breast and skin.

Baste regularly during roasting.

Once done, flip breast-side down to allow it to baste itself while cooling.

Allow enough time for resting before carving, to ensure no moisture is lost.

Want to fill your home with winter warmth, festive sparkle and gorgeous décor? We asked three top designers to choose their key trends for winter 2014 – and they have provided plenty of inspiration to help you achieve them.

Less Is More ÜFind Your Focus In this picture the focus is obviously the piece of wall art, which is why it works so well that the rest of the room has been kept clean and muted.

The slightly faded rug juxtaposed beautifully against the strong hues in the framed art and the crisp white sofa.

ÞDesign Elements (The House Shop) "This 'Pitcher by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen' is spare but sensuous with an elegant handle and exaggerated lip, while this 'Bangle by Regitze Overgaard for Georg Jensen' is beautifully simple. The shape and the fluidity of the metal are what attracted me to this piece," says Michele.

It's so easy to go overboard. "Today, clients want fewer things but really good things," says The House Shop's interior designer Michele O'Reilly. "The design challenge is to create a minimal look without the space looking cold and sterile." ÙAll in the Detail (The House Shop) This is a solid table with maximum lightness. “I love the way the table appears to be floating because of the clever design of the laminated glass legs beneath,” explains Michele.

ÚChristmas Chic Of course, it’s fine to embrace Christmas – where would be the fun in ignoring it?

But adding festive décor doesn’t have to add clutter. By sticking to one simple colour scheme – like white – your look will feel welcoming and cohesive.

ÛModern Monochrome (The House Shop) “While playing with different light tones,” says Michele, “I wanted to create a space that was airy and calm. I love the contrast the natural woods create in this otherwise monochromatic space.”

ÙThe Modern Chandelier (cliffyoungltd.com) Chandeliers were used as a focal point and status symbol for so many years, before they went out of fashion. But don’t be put off. This modern, brass chandelier adds modern brilliance to any room.

ÙRound the Rim (davidlinley.com) Don’t want to go overboard on the mixed metals? This gorgeous gift set is perfect – with just a set of candles that have a metallic finish and scent: silver and sea salt, gold and bay and rosemary, gun metal and embers, bronze and orange and cinnamon.

ÜGone with the Gold Think gold is the go-to for festive shimmer? Think again. As this copper bauble highlights, there’s definitely room for change when it comes to which metallic hues to bring into a look at Christmas.

ÜFestive Sparkle From the exposed pipes to the metal-rimmed chair, it is clear that this room mixes metals all year round. The sparkling silver Christmas tree adds to that, by working with the cohesive style of the room, and bringing another metal tone into the space.

Mixed Metals Greta Apap Bologna has worked on an array of stunning international projects, as well as numerous local ones. Inspired by the festive sparkle of Christmas, Greta chose to highlight ‘mixed metals’ – a trend that works beautifully all year round.

“Matching items isn’t very in for this year or next, so mixing materials – including metals – adds interest and excitement.

And, of course, it works beautifully for this time of year too.”

ÚIn the Background Metallic wallpaper and metallic paint are a huge trend for 2015. They are great for creating attention-grabbing spaces, and provide the ideal backdrop for mixing in other metal-base hues. Want to be bang-on trend? We suggest those with warm gold, brass and copper tones.

ÛMetallic Statement (signaturehardware.com) Really want to embrace this trend? Well, it doesn’t get more dynamic than this – a Paxton polished copper slipper pedestal tub, that will quickly become the focal point of any retro bathroom makeover. The rolled rim and ribbed plinth make it all the more majestic.

ÛTrolley Dolly (2stdibs.com) There’s something automatically festive about the drink trolley, piled high with after dinner tipples to be enjoyed by the fireplace. We love this antique piece, especially thanks to the sharp gold detailing.

pippa toledo ÛStaying Power Certain looks never go out of style, and this is one of them. Because the designer here hasn’t embraced one particular style or trend, it doesn’t look temporary but long term. This is a room created to last in style, colour and materials. ÜRich and Inviting (clarke-clarke.com) The right fabric – such as this gorgeous velvet in a rosy hue – really is rich, warm and inviting. Simplicity is key, though, and velvet looks best when used on one key item in a room – whether drapes, a cushion, a piece of furniture or a throw. When buying velvet, make sure it has a good touch and strong pile.

Timeless Interiors “This style is all about creating interiors that don’t date,” explains renowned interior designer Pippa Toledo. “People have quickly realised that very modern styles get tiring after a while, so it makes sense to choose a look that is both ageless and practical. Timeless items work beautifully all year round, whether in your most-frequented rooms, or just for Christmas.”

ÚUnderfoot (The Pippa Toledo Studio) “This year we have brought in a beautiful collection of distressed rugs, in a huge variety of sizes, colours and finishes,” says Pippa. “These rugs are loosely based on the traditional Persian style, but they have been given a more contemporary makeover that would work with any home – as can be seen in this set-up.”

ÛForever Festive (raftfurniture.co.uk) Festive décor can look beautifully timeless too. The key is to keep it simple, and to choose a colour scheme that blends with your current hues, and doesn’t stand out too much. The really good news is that decorations of this kind can be used year after year, and they’ll never look dated.

STYLE 104 HOMES ÜStatement Colours (The Pippa Toledo Studio) Although it’s a softer palette that works best for timeless interiors, one statement colour can really make all the difference. “Here I have put together a muted collection of darker pieces of furniture and cushions, accented with pieces in a bright red. The red really stands out and, because there is only a little of it, it can be easily changed if you get bored. Red is also the ideal accent colour for a timeless festive look,” says Pippa.

ÛGetting it Right – Blue and White (The Pippa Toledo Studio) Willow patterns are back in fashion again – which is great news for all those with classic ceramic and china pieces sitting locked away!

“Blue and white, in general, is a particularly timeless palette, and it looks great teamed with furniture pieces in complementary hues.”

ÛSoft & Serene (The Pippa Toledo Studio) “These hues are typical of timeless interiors,” explains Pippa. “They’re easy on the eye and they all work together beautifully. Soft furnishings, such as cushions and rugs, really help to tie the look together – especially if you use classic fabrics such as velvets, silks and linen.”

Ahead of its Moulin Rouge-themed New Year’s Eve party, the team at the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa has crafted a decadent French menu inspired by the country’s rich ingredients and impeccable dining ethos.

CHICKEN LIVER PÂTÉ WITH RED CHERRY CHUTNEY & MANDARIN GEL – serves 4

Ingredients: 400g chicken liver; ½tsp rock salt; 2 sprigs thyme; 2cl port; 2cl brandy; red cherry chutney; mandarin gel; toasted hazelnuts; 1 brioche bun; butter Method: Mash the chicken liver, season it with the rock salt, thyme, port and brandy, and chill in the fridge for four hours. Form it into a cylindrical shape and put onto a baking tray. Roast in a hot oven until pink, remove and wrap in muslin. Refrigerate overnight.

Cut into smaller barrel shapes and serve with crumbs of brioche that have been fried in butter until golden brown. Garnish with the red cherry chutney, mandarin gel and toasted hazelnuts.

STYLE 108 CUISINE

ROAST FILLET OF VEAL WITH SHALLOT TATIN & RED WINE JUS – serves 4

Ingredients: 800g veal fillet; 2tbsp butter; port; thyme; shallots; puff pastry; mushrooms; red wine jus; 5 asparagus; 5 baby carrots Method: Marinate the veal in the port and thyme. Seal the meat in a hot pan and cook until medium rare. Allow to rest. Slow cook the shallots in the red wine jus, allow to cool and top with a ring of puff pastry, and bake till golden brown.

SautĂŠ the remaining vegetables until they are cooked-but-crisp, and serve with the pastry and veal.

CUISINE 111 STYLE

TARTE AU CITRON, CHOUX ISPAHAN, GLACE AU BERIOLETTE – serves 4

Ingredients: 175g plain flour; 100g unsalted butter, cut into cubes; 25g icing sugar; 1 egg yolk; 1tbsp cold water For the filling: 6 eggs; 125ml cream; 225g sugar; 5 lemons, juice and zest Method: Mix the flour, butter and icing sugar in a food processor, add the egg yolk and water, and mix again to form a pastry. Knead the pastry once over to make it smooth and chill before rolling out. Grease a straight-edged tart tin and line with the pastry.

Preheat the oven to 200°C and bake blind for 12 minutes. Allow the pastry to cool. Reduce the oven temperature to 165°C. For the filling, whisk the eggs, add the rest of the filling ingredients and whisk again until they are well combined.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until just set. Serve dusted with icing sugar and with other garnishes of your choice.
