Life in the ageing lane Happiness, satisfaction and positivity are all endearing attributes generally associated with youth, but why should they stop there? Martina Said discusses why such sentiments know no age and what you could do to embrace them.

W

e’re often told that age is just a number, that what matters is the way we feel and to approach situations irrespective of our years. But is it really that simple to ignore the numbers and simply live our lives? Apparently, it is.

An article recently published in The Times depicted 101 yearold Salvina Formosa – born in Gozo but living in Australia – as

something of an inspiration.

The Sydney resident claimed to do her own cooking and washing, and even exercises and lifts weights weekly. The grandmother of two, who starts her day as early as 5am, left for Australia at the age of 37 and still makes time for sewing since teaching dressmaking in Malta 64 years ago. Reading this made me wonder: often, ageing is linked to a range of negative stereotypes, forcing us to associate it with aches, pains, immobility, submissiveness

and a total lack of freedom, but there are people out there who choose to shatter those stereotypes in order to attain happiness or accomplish great things no matter their age, and that is how it should be.

Maturity is supposedly something that comes with age, although it is often considered to be just a state of mind. A study published by a member of the University of Exeter shows that older people who categorise themselves

as elderly and frail are more likely to behave as though they are and give up activities that help keep them young such as socialising and regular exercise.

On the other hand, those with a positive and jovial attitude are more likely to continue partaking in such activities, helping them stay fit and mentally alert.

It therefore follows that one should not stop enjoying themselves in whatever (legal) way they see fit just because

they’ve surpassed the 50 or 60 year mark. So yes, go ahead and defy maturity by simply forgetting what age you are and how you think you are supposed to act (without being too offensive). If you’re considering taking up a new sport but are second guessing your decision because you’re uncomfortable at the thought of being the only one there past 25, try it out anyway – you’re likely to get a few stares at first, followed by some admirable glances.

That’s not to say that physical or emotional pain doesn’t hinder you sometimes from wanting or being able to pursue things in life. As we age, our bodies don’t always cooperate with our willingness to be physically active, and perhaps our appetite to engage with others vanishes from time to time.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that becoming too isolated or detached is not healthy and at times, this could come down to a deficiency of some sort; hormonal, nutritional or otherwise.

Some choose to enhance their diets with supplements including vitamins, herbs and products with antioxidant properties that enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals (before buying anything off the counter, however, check with your doctor that they do not work against any other medication you might be taking).

If you’re not keen on ditching your jeans in favour of trousers with elastic waistbands, then absolutely don’t, and who’s to stop you from enjoying yourself at a water park, playground or amusement park with or without your grandchildren if you feel like and find it fun?

matter how old you are or what quirks bring you joy and satisfaction. It all comes down to attitude and the way you feel when you do something you enjoy. Notice how people gravitate towards someone that radiates happiness, smiles and laughs often – it’s because such emotions are contagious and encourage others to let go and

Top signs you’re embracing ageing So what if you’ve lost your hair or gained some weight? You’ve acquired wisdom and confidence which are far more important. Now that your children have probably flown the proverbial nest and you have more time on your hands, do not let numbers slow you down. Here are some signs that prove you are ageing well: • You still attend concerts and other crowd-pulling attractions, and if you can get through the whole thing standing on your feet (without pulling out a folding chair), the youths are in for some serious competition.

• Embracing technology couldn’t be a stronger signal – if you use a smartphone, own a laptop or tablet, skype friends and family overseas, and keep yourself up to scratch with some of the latest gadgets around, you’re a step ahead of the rest. If you’re still hanging on to your Nokia 3310, it might be time to replace it.

• Once your children have grown up and settled into their own ways, it’s ok for your life to no longer revolve around their every need and want, putting time for yourself before them. You might be asked to assist with the grandchildren, but they help keep you young anyway so it’s a win-win.

• Perhaps the best feeling is when people look at you in disbelief when you tell them you’re a grandparent, or when they confuse you with your children who are now approaching their early forties – that deserves a pat on the back.

On Top of the World

Having recently been crowned Miss World Malta, model Katrina Pavia is now looking forward to competing at the 65th edition of the Miss World Contest in Australia later this year. She chats to Jo Caruana about her career, her passions, and her beloved pet cat Kukku.

M

odel Katrina Pavia was born in Gozo in 1989, and is the youngest of five children. Today she’s a confident woman who has become renowned for her poise and grace on stage and the catwalk – but, as she explains, it wasn’t always this way.

successes continued: at the age of 15 she flew to China to participate in the Miss Bikini of the Universe Competition, and placed 11th out of 65 girls. And, just months later, she returned to China for the Miss Model of the World Competition, where she beat 84 participants to the title of Miss Best Model in the evening gown category.

“The first time I stepped on stage was in a Christmas concert at my pre-kindergaten school, and I cried my eyes out!” she recalls with a smile. “I was very shy, and would hide behind my mum everywhere we went.”

Since then she has won all sorts of other exciting awards, including the first-runner up of Miss World Malta in 2007, second-runner up in the Miss Princess of the World contest in the Czech Republic, and, a key highlight so far, the 2010 title of Miss European at a competition in Belgium. Plus, she has been nominated at the Malta Fashion Awards seven times, has won both the Best Photo Model and Best Female Model awards, and has also won four awards for playing the title role in the local film Katrina.

Katrina was first enrolled in modelling and drama lessons when she was 13, much to her dismay. “It was my parents’ idea and I went against my will,” she says. “But my mum and dad really wanted to boost my social skills; thankfully it paid off eventually. The turning point came when I entered a local competition and won, and then won another one. It helped to boost my confidence.”

So, by the time Katrina took part in the Miss Maltese Beauty competition organised by Sue Rossi when she was 15, the young model was well and truly hooked. And her

What is your earliest memory of modelling?

Taking part in a fund raising event at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Gozo, quite a few years ago.

Can you remember the day you knew that modelling would play a major role in your life?

I was lucky enough to be successful in several competitions in a row, and that’s when I realised I might be on the right track. I also realised that I much preferred the catwalk to sitting at my desk studying.

How do you spend your down time?

Peaceful and alone, with my beloved pets.

What's your favourite thing in your whole house?

Kukku, my lovely cat and my friend. I also have a sevenmetre long closet full of dresses, and another two wardrobes bursting with coats, jackets, shoes and accessories that I quite like. That said, even they don’t give me anywhere near as much joy as Kukku does.

Do you have a favourite piece of clothing?

That would have to be a lovely hot-pink dress I wore as a child when I was a flower girl, accompanied by my brother Lauren who was the pageboy.

For as long as I can remember I would sneak away from the table while my siblings and I were doing our homework, so that I could put that dress on. It’s a ritual I kept up for a number of years, until, sadly, I couldn’t fit in it anymore.

What are you passionate about?

Definitely animals. Almost all of my childhood pets, including Kukku, were strays. Growing up I can remember crying my eyes out when one of them would present me with their latest victim, usually a bird or a mouse. My most vivid memory is of releasing a huge blackand-white guinea pig from the jaws of one of our cats.

Thankfully he was fine, and I actually ended up keeping him as a pet too.

How would you describe your own style and approach to fashion?

I like to keep myself up-todate on the latest trends but I tend to buy the things that

appeal to me, whether they’re fashionable or not. I think of fashion as a big wheel: what was fashionable 20 years ago may well be back in vogue today. I also love to match rock styles with classic ones, and masculine wear with more feminine pieces.

Are there any models you look up to internationally?

I love to follow Doutzen Kroes and Bianca Balti because they’re natural beauties. I also think that actress Katie McGrath has a hauntingly beautiful face.

If you could model for any international designer, who would you pick?

Giorgio Armani. His clothes are classic and I think they reflect a woman’s strength and sophistication.

What three things would you take with you to a desert island?

That’s simple: endless packets of food, lots of water, and a yacht – so I could end my ‘holiday’ when I get bored.

What would you never buy?

Exotic pets. I believe their place is in the wild. BB

f there’s one thing us locals like doing it’s entertaining, making summer without doubt one of the best times of year for doing so. Those long, warm evenings spent kicking back with a beer or glass of chilled wine, dining and laughing with family and friends in the great outdoors somehow beat dreary winter nights spent inside, and now that June is already upon us, it is time to entertain. Those who enjoy throwing dinner parties, BBQs, hosting days by the pool or even

simply love having friends over for a drink or two know the importance of setting up a space in their home that serves this purpose, and for the summer, an outdoor garden, terrace or patio is the answer. Before you pull out your table linens and fire up the BBQ, however, there are a bunch of things you need to do to set up your outdoor space in preparation for hosting guests.

Prep the garden

If your garden has gone with the wind over winter, it is time to bring it back to good health, as a lively garden plays a big part in boosting an outdoor area. Start watering your plants and greenery regularly over a period of time, and if you’re a keen gardener, consider investing in a domestic drip irrigation system to water your plants deeply and encourage them to develop deeper root systems which will help them survive hot, dry weather.

You may need to boost your garden with altogether new greenery – if you opt to do so, be sure to choose some colourful plants and trees that are able to survive the summer, and which give your garden a fresh feel in the process.

Wooden decking is a popular look for an outdoor area, especially if it surrounds a pool, but the options now extend beyond wood alone, giving consumers the luxury of choice including decking in composite lumber, plastic as well as hardwood. While hardwood options continue to be a classic

and reliable choice, plastic and composite decking are known to be extremely weather and stain-resistant, do not splinter, warp or rot easily and come in an extensive selection of colours. It is certainly worth applying a layer of protective oil to hardwood decking – be sure to clean it well first and rid it of any stains or mould. If your existing decking is looking a little grimy from last summer, now is a good time to pull out the power washer and give everything in the garden a good cleaning.

The great thing about this tool is that it is ideal for washing many things around the house,

including windows, outdoor flooring, outdoor furniture, cars, drive-ins and external staircases. It removes dirt effectively, uses much less water than a regular garden hose pipe, and reduces the length of your cleaning time significantly.

If the BBQ has also accumulated some dirt since its last use, get rid of the grease by pouring some water onto the grill, turning on the burner and closing the lid – this way, the steam will loosen up the dirt and any remaining grime can be removed with a steel brush.

But you could also spruce up your existing furniture with some

new accessories, such as a brand new set of linen napkins, tablecloth and throws, cushion covers, cutlery and glasses in bright colours that will have your outdoor area screaming out ‘summer’ with minimum effort.

Provide ample shade

We all know how unforgiving the summer sun can be, and when you’re entertaining, the last thing you want to be doing is fussing around guests in the scorching sun. Let’s not confuse this with intentionally staying in the sun to sunbathe, which we tend to do in between refreshing dips in the pool – when it comes to eating and entertaining, shelter from the sun is an absolute necessity. For this reason, invest in different sources of shade to suit the size, dimensions and look of your outdoor space. There are various stylish options to choose from, including umbrellas, canopies, retractable awnings and, if you’ve got the space for them, tall trees, all of which offer the same purpose of protecting your party guests.

Keep the pests away Fed up of mosquitoes already? We don’t blame you. Martina Said discusses some simple, domestic pest control measures to help keep unwelcome pests at bay.

S

ummer comes with many perks, but we can all relate to the noticeable increase of annoying pests once warmer weather rolls around, and our first and foremost desire is to get rid of them effectively. The odd moon tiger doesn’t always cut it, but before reaching out to pest control professionals to get rid of unwanted pests in and outside your house, there are other measures to look into which might just do the trick.

The rise in pests has a lot to do with seasonality – during the summer, many insects become more active, move more quickly and eat more food than in any other season and because of this, they are less mindful of protecting themselves.

Mosquitoes are almost certainly among the most common and bothersome pests at this time of year – they not only pinch and irritate when they bite, but are capable of spoiling many hours of fun. Before opting for the last resort of professional

help, attempt these simple measures to eliminate the possibility of a breeding ground.

Firstly, get rid of stagnant water as it is exactly where mosquitoes breed – empty out the pool, rain gutters and any rainwater that collected in empty buckets, flower pots or containers lying around outside the house. Since mosquitoes are weak flyers, you’d do well to invest in some fans and place them around the house, especially in rooms you spend a lot of time in such as the living room and bedroom. Even if you keep the fan on a low setting, enough of an air flow will be created to keep them away, although this tends to work best in small areas. Investing in a number of insect screens around the house is certainly worth your while, especially if you live in an area surrounded by greenery and open fields, and if you’d rather avoid using citronella or moon tigers because of the smells they release, spray on

some mosquito repellent, and offer it to guests too if you’re entertaining – they’ll thank you later for it.

Fleas and ticks are also around more in summer, and are highly loathed by humans and animals alike. Fleas, for instance, multiply and thrive in warm weather, and can live for as little as 12 days or for over 100, depending on the temperature and humidity. While ticks are active all year round and not only in summer, they tend to appear more profusely during

these months as people spend more time outdoors and are therefore more exposed to them. Both pests carry multiple diseases which affect animals and humans, and if you see them lingering around your home in unpleasant numbers, rope in the help of professional pest exterminators for prevention.

You’re also likely to notice more ants around the house in summer. Since they form very large colonies they are not easy to keep under control. Ant nests are usually located in moist soil, next to or under buildings and along pavements, and easily work their way into homes if nothing is done to stop them. If you’ve noticed them crawling on cupboards and around food, make double sure that no food is left out of unsealed containers and that no crumbs are left lying around. It is not the most sightly of equipment, but it certainly fulfils its mission. Large citronella candles could help stave off mosquitoes especially – the candle releases a light, plant-based scent which is effective, but not overpowering and could make a nice addition to a table too. Fly swatters are not the best tool if you’ve got lots of pests flying around but can certainly come in handy for a few bugs here and there – just be sure to clean them regularly after use, especially if the kids enjoy using them for fun. 1565: First and Last Hope is an interactive and site-specific performance featuring some of Malta’s best actors, centred around the events before, during and after the Great Siege of 1565, to be held at the newly restored Fort St Elmo – the very site which witnessed epic heroism during the Siege and which proved crucial for the eventual victory. The audience will be able to experience what it would have been like to live those days of great tension, turmoil and also patriotism by being directly involved in the performance.

The audience will be guided through the main stages of the Great Siege, leading to the victory over the Ottoman invaders. A number of historical spots within Fort St Elmo will serve as backdrops to the scenes which bring the events to the audience in a realistic and personal manner. “The way we are presenting the play is intended to make those who attend feel as if they were there themselves,” says director Alan Fenech.

A Three-Course Treat

Put your cooking skills to the test and indulge your senses with this delightful food feast prepared by the talented chefs at Le MĂŠridien

ROMA TOMATO SALAD WITH MELTED BUFFALO MOZZARELLA AND WHITE BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE By Executive Chef Sven Cepon INGREDIENTS SERVES 4 3 whole roma tomatoes 2 shallots 10g green olives 12ml olive oil 12ml white balsamic vinegar 4ml vegetable stock 2g salt 2g honey 4g sugar Fresh black pepper Mixed greens 2 buffalo mozzarella 10ml dark balsamic vinegar 5g fresh basil 5ml olive oil

Method Slice the tomatoes into quarters and chop the shallots into fine strips. In a pan, combine 6ml of white balsamic vinegar and the sugar. Add the shallots to the pan and bring to boil, then remove from the heat once ready and cool immediately.

Chop the green olives and mix them with the olive oil, the rest of the white balsamic vinegar, vegetable stock, honey, salt and black pepper to make the vinaigrette. Marinate the mozzarella in the dark balsamic vinegar, some fresh basil and olive oil, preferably a day ahead for the cheese to absorb all the flavour.

Heat a frying pan and remove from the hob once hot. Proceed to place the tomatoes and shallots in the pan. Add the vinaigrette and set aside so that the tomatoes and shallots are marinated in the vinaigrette. Slice the marinated mozzarella into equal pieces (not bigger than a â‚Ź2 coin), place them on a tray and put in the oven at 180oC for a few minutes until the mozzarella starts to melt.

Put all the ingredients on a plate and garnish with the fresh mixed greens and the rest of the fresh basil.

Method Pin bone the sea bass fillet and marinate it with some fresh thyme and olive oil. Wash the new potatoes and chop in half, then fry them in olive oil and butter in a hot pan.

Remove from the pan, add some more fresh thyme and garlic. Roast in the oven at 180oC until cooked.

Wash the cherry tomatoes and chop in half. Put them in an ovenproof dish together with a sprinkle of sugar and rock salt, and bake in the oven at 90oC until the cherry tomatoes are dried.

Wash the fresh fennel and slice it finely. SautĂŠ the fennel in a pan with some onions and garlic, add the white wine and finish with some butter and seasoning. Finely chop the remaining onions, garlic and olives, and mix them with some olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest and fresh mint. Mix all the ingredients together to make the dressing for the fish.

Pan-fry the fish fillet, skin side first for two minutes and then flip to the other side. Remove the pan from the heat, add some butter, leave it to rest and season with salt and pepper. To assemble the plate, start with the braised fennel and potatoes, followed by the cherry tomatoes and fish fillet on top. Drizzle the dressing on and around the fish, and serve.

Ingredients SERVES 6 For the dough: 250g butter 125g sugar 1 egg 500g flour

Method Pre heat the oven at 200oC. Starting with the dough, place the sugar, butter and egg in a mixer, and mix well. Add the flour gradually until all ingredients have blended together, forming a smooth dough. Place the dough in cling film and leave it to rest in a cool area for 20 minutes. Once rested, roll the dough to a thickness of 1.5cm, place in a dish and bake blind for around 30 minutes in the oven at 180oC. Put aside and allow it to cool.

For the filling: 500ml water 250g sugar 125g fresh orange juice 3 passion fruits 60g corn flour 125g sugar 125g butter 3 egg yolks 3 gelatine leaves

For the filling, beat the sugar and butter in a mixer until it becomes white in colour, then add the egg yolks and set aside. Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water. In a separate saucepan, boil the water, sugar, orange juice and passion fruit together. When it begins to boil, add the corn flour and stir continuously until it’s dissolved and a firm custard forms, then add the gelatine leaves. Gradually add this orange mix to the butter mixture and mix gently until all ingredients combine together.

Pour the mixture into the pastry shell and leave it to set.

Garnish with mint and some fresh passion fruit.

Louis, who owns and runs this culinary outlet, is the third generation of well renowned local bakers. He passionately recalls the days of their local bakery using traditional methods and the best of hand-picked ingredients.

Such traditions almost vanished when machinery took over due to industrial progress, when baking was no longer a passion but a mass production activity. It was this drive and passion for cooking which led Louis to embark on this culinary adventure, with the intention of reviving traditional recipes.

Food is mostly appreciated when accompanied with the appropriate wines.

This menu takes you through a journey of wines from different continents, notwithstanding our local line of wines which we proudly present. Da Luigi also provides a platform for artists who get inspired by its mystic location overlooking a picturesque valley.

The best of summer holidays Need a break? Fancy a quick getaway or a long overdue vacation with your friends or loved ones? Get your passport ready, as Sarah Micallef takes a look at the most popular summer destinations this year for long and short holidays, whatever your budget.

he month of June marks the start of summer, and for many, this means holidays, summer shutdown and reduced working hours. With the kids out of school, summer is the perfect time to pack your bags and send yourselves off on a family holiday, while younger couples can take advantage of the numerous festivals, events and outdoor parties that take place all over the world during the summer months.

Once you’ve established when you’d like to set off on your summer adventure, the next item on the agenda should be deciding where to go. Your chosen destination will depend on a few things: whether you’re opting for a quick getaway or a longer vacation, what your budget is like, as well as the type of trip you’re after – be it adventurous terrain, a sophisticated city break or a luxurious beach vacation.

According to Kevin Sciortino, manager at Orange Travel Group, the top destinations for short holidays this year are Italy and Spain. Among the reasons for the popularity of these destinations

are “daily flights, cheap fares and a wide selection of hotels to suit every budget,” he explains. Italy has loads to offer depending on which part you travel to – from cuisine, art and lush country landscapes to iconic cities, turquoise lakes and balmy southern beaches. Similarly, Spain features some incredible experiences, from cosmopolitan city life and cuisine to a distinct culture, including the hotly debated Running of the Bulls in July.

If you’re looking to get away for a little longer, Kevin highlights the Greek islands as a top place to visit, explaining that when it comes to longer holidays, “this year’s top destinations are the Greek Isles like Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu. Many people are opting for an all-inclusive cruise, which is becoming more and more popular, especially the ones leaving from Malta and sailing to the Western and Eastern Med.” The Greek islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu are certainly beautiful at this time of year, with each offering a unique experience.

From the picturesque white-washed buildings of peaceful Santorini to the

sizzling style of neighbouring Mykonos, which is widely known for its parties and nightlife, the Greek islands offer something for everyone, mixed in with a delicious dose of Mediterranean sunshine, culture and history.

Meanwhile, if your budget is a little tight this year and you’ve got to keep a handle on your purse strings, this doesn’t have to mean foregoing a holiday entirely. Asked what he’d recommend for a great budget holiday this summer, Orange Travel Group’s Kevin Sciortino asserts that the Greek island of Corfu makes for an excellent budget getaway. “Prices start from €479 for a week, which includes flight, accommodation in a four-star hotel on half-board basis, as well as transfers and all taxes,” he maintains.

Another option for the budget traveller would be a mini cruise. “Mini cruises are also becoming popular,” says Kevin, explaining, “they normally involve one flight, a pre or post stay on land and three nights on a ship, which can either start or finish in Malta. Prices start from €499 for a cruise aboard the Costa Fascinosa, departing in September.”

Summer holiday dos and don’ts Be a travel pro with these tips and tricks: • Plan ahead – arrive at the airport or cruise terminal early to avoid stressing out about making your flight or boat on time, and check-in online whenever possible.

• Travel light – you say it time and time again, but this time, do it! Take a look at your bag and evaluate whether you actually need all that stuff – no one likes lugging around unnecessarily heavy bags, do they?

• Summer essentials – if you’re heading off on a sunny getaway, make sure you’re sun safe by taking along summer essentials like a cap or hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Facial tissues and wipes are also a great idea to combat stickiness.

• Keep hydrated – running around in the sun can leave you feeling faint, so make sure you drink plenty of fluids like mineral water, coconut water, orange juice and squashes to avoid dehydration.
