25 TO 49-YEAR-OLDS VOLUNTEER MOST According to the most recent statistics issued by the National Statistics Office, the largest share of people in Malta who do some form of voluntary work (37 per cent) are aged

between 25 and 49. Next up are those aged 50 to 64 (30 per cent). Statistics indicate that in total eight per cent of people in Malta aged 12 and over carry out voluntary work.

In summer people tend to have more time on their hands and some seek to make good use of their free time by dedicating it to helping others. A number of local organisations are very active in the voluntary sector and organise more activities at this time of year, be they on a large scale overseas or on a small scale locally, that aim to help those in need.

In this month’s cover story Best Buy meets two volunteers. Justine Bugeja is about to take off to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia together with a group of other volunteers to “help out the poorest of the poor,” nursing wounds, assisting carers and working in orphanages.

Erminiette Zammit-Camilleri volunteers locally and has been doing so for a while, at Mater Dei Hospital, helping out the nursing staff as well as patients in several ways.

HSBC Swieqi branch

In recent weeks, the HSBC branch in Swieqi received a major makeover and features a revamped layout providing cashier services. All customers can visit the branch for their personal financial and banking needs while, for improved privacy, Premier customers continue to be served from the branch’s first floor. These developments are in line with HSBC’s €10 million branch refurbishment programme.

The staff members in the branch are trained to help customers make use of the bank’s automated services such as ATMs, internet banking and phone banking.

8 PER CENT OF MALTESE AGED 12 AND OVER DO VOLUNTARY WORK Statistics released by the NSO reveal that the Maltese are truly a generous nation, not only with their money, but also with their time, as a good number of Maltese do some form of voluntary work or other, particularly those in the 25-49 age bracket. Chiara Bonello speaks to two people who make the time to give something back to society.

G

enerally most of us lead busy lives, which leave us with little time to dedicate to ourselves and to those around us, but if we really make an effort, many of us would manage to make some time to help others. This time of year is in fact ideal as a starting point, as we tend to find ourselves with more time on our hands.

The most recent statistics from the National Statistics Office show that in 2011 around eight per cent of persons aged 12 and over were doing some form of voluntary work, and the largest share of these (37 per cent) was aged between 25 and 49. Those in the 50-64 age bracket came next, at 30 per cent.

To inspire us to take the plunge, we spoke to two individuals who are truly dedicated to helping those in need.

Justine Bugeja Justine begins with an inspiring quote: “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop” – Mother Teresa “I will be going to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, together with eight other volunteers and Fr Mark Cachia of the University of Malta Chaplaincy for a month.

During our stay we will be working in the House of the Dying, a hospital run by the Missionaries of Charity.

There we will be nursing and feeding the poorest of the poor, we will help with nursing the wounds and applying bandages, and assisting the sisters on a general level, in whatever they need.

We will also be working in two different orphanages. One of these is run by the Franciscan Nuns, whilst the Little Angels Home is run by Monica Tonna Barthet. We will be spending a few hours every week teaching the children English, playing with them and entertaining them with songs and games.

This is my first experience of voluntary work in a poor country. I hope that it will be an enriching experience, both for myself and for the group. Although it is hard to really imagine what

lies ahead until we get there, we will surely be living life from a different perspective than our own, forcing us to dig deep and challenge our beliefs and opinions. I am certain that by the end of this experience, I would have received far more than I would have actually given.”

Erminiette ZammitCamilleri “I had a very active and interesting working life as a travel agent/tour organiser and group escort, and on retirement I felt the need to do something completely different and give something back to society, which was what led me to VolServ.

VolServ, organised by SOS Malta, aims to enhance the quality of patients’ overall experience, add value to the work of the

hospital staff and offer rewarding opportunities for volunteers.

At the time that I joined, VolServ was offering training for persons wishing to volunteer at Mater Dei. With my background in counselling I hoped to make good use of my experience.

This, coupled with a wish I always had to build a career in the health sector, was a deciding factor. To me this seemed like the next best thing.

I started off acting as a guide, helping people find their way around the hospital, as the hospital is large and most people found it difficult (some still do) to find the right department, clinic or ward. For a while I was attached to one of the wards, running errands for the nursing staff or keeping patients company, particularly those who did not have visitors or who had a prolonged stay in hospital. For a time I was also at the Renal Department and at A&E.

At present I am attached to the in-patients lending library, where I catalogue and keep track of the books.

Myself, and several members of my family, were hospital patients at one time or another and we found help from others, so perhaps a desire to give something back motivates me. One thing which has really changed since I started volunteering is my perspective of ‘giving’. Difficult to explain, however I feel that although I do not really give much, I receive so much more.

My hope is that my presence will make a difference to others.”

Erminiette’s Advice “If you have some time, make good use of it. A few hours a week are enough to slot in a little voluntary work. You will be surprised, as I was, that in giving so little you will actually receive so much more.”

truth be told, there are few places I would rather dine al fresco than right here in Malta during the summer months. Chiara Bonello feels like a tourist in Malta as she tours the best areas for summer dining.

uring the summer months the weather in Malta gets pretty unbearable and options for heading out for lunch are somewhat limited, but with dinner it is a completely different story. Evenings are generally cooler and most restaurants offer an outdoors option.

Cuisines available in Malta are varied, as in recent years many different restaurants have opened their doors, bringing in Italian, French, Greek and Oriental cuisines, among others.

And eateries range from fast food outlets to pasta-houses and pizzerias, and places serving steaks, fish, seafood, rabbit and other local delicacies.

The food is often of a good standard, however the unique selling point of many Maltese restaurants would definitely be their location. Few European countries can boast of such a rich history, architecture and the same volume of beaches in such a tiny area.

Malta’s capital city, Valletta, is a blend of culture and commerce, and plays host to a number of smaller restaurants and cafeterias which offer the possibility of dining outdoors. Increasingly, restaurants along pedestrianised Merchants Street are offering seating in designated areas where one can sit and enjoy a bite to eat, while soaking up Valletta’s history.

Restaurants along the Valletta Waterfront, on the other hand, give diners the opportunity of dining at the water’s edge, quite literally. There are various cuisines on offer, ranging from pasta and pizza, to local cuisine, American fare and Chinese delights.

Further afield, Sliema and St Julian’s, both major tourist areas, offer an abundance of coffee shops and restaurants in close proximity of the sea. Restaurants dot the promenade which leads from Qui-Si-Sana to St Julian’s, ranging in cuisines from authentic Maltese fare to a variety of wonderful Mediterranean eateries.

A drive further North towards St Paul’s Bay and Mellieha will lead you to some of the best eateries on the island, often with the added bonus of a beautiful sea or country view. Whether it’s simply a small snack or a slap-up dinner you’re after, you will find something to suit your palate.

Moving towards the South of the island one finds a veritable treasure trove of restaurants, with a variety of casual and family-friendly eateries, some in a beautiful historic setting, and a good number of fish restaurants. For a concentration of the best fish restaurants one should doubtlessly make a trip to Marsaxlokk. Definitely well worth the drive, the quaint natural harbour hosts restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood. As an added bonus many offer outdoor seating, right by the sea.

LOCAL FEAST With the recent revival of local cuisine, most of us are increasingly appreciating locally sourced ingredients and the delights that can be cooked up using them. Here are some ideas for the next time you invite your friends over, prepared for us by L’Aroma Kitchen.

OCTOPUS IN GARLIC INGREDIENTS 1kg octopus, cut into small pieces 2 cloves garlic 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil 100ml white wine Salt and pepper Fresh parsley, chopped

Next, heat the oil in a separate pan. Fry the garlic and then add the octopus and the wine. Simmer until the wine evaporates.

Finally add the parsley, salt and pepper. The dish can be served either warm or cold.

METHOD Cook the octopus in water and lemon juice on a low heat for around an hour.

BRAGJOLI (BEEF OLIVES) INGREDIENTS 4 thinly sliced pieces of beef (around the size of your palm) 4 slices lean bacon 1 hard-boiled egg, quartered 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 1 large potato, quartered 1 beef stock cube 150g tomato paste Good handful of parsley, finely chopped Dash of red wine Can of peas Salt and pepper to taste Toothpicks to fasten

METHOD Start by placing a slice of beef on a chopping board with a piece of bacon on top. Add a quarter of a hard-boiled egg over the bacon and sprinkle with parsley. Roll into a tight roll and pierce with a toothpick in the middle and at both ends to seal and hold everything in place. Repeat with all four slices.

Heat a small amount of oil in a large pot and brown the bragjoli, then remove from the pan.

You might need to cook them one by one. Once cooked, set them aside.

Sauté the chopped onions and garlic until soft. Add tomato paste and a little water, and stir until well combined.

Add the bragjoli to the pot and cover with boiling water.

Next, add potatoes, stock cube, remaining parsley and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for one hour.

Then fry the garlic in the olive oil. Next add all the seafood except for the razor clams to the pan and once the mussels and clams being to open, add the razor clams. Leave to cook for a few minutes. Then add the tomato juice.

Cook the pasta al dente and strain. Return the pasta to the pan and toss all the seafood in, lastly adding the cherry tomatoes and the chopped herbs.

Allow to stand for two minutes, then add the fresh cream. Plate right away, placing the razor clams and prawns on top.

The Man Behind The Music Larger than life, DJ Carlo Borg Bonaci has wowed on the airways for decades, and now hosts Carlo’s Breakfast Café every morning on Magic Malta. Here he chats to Jo Caruana about travelling, music and his ‘zarbun’.

F

ew local radio listeners won’t have come across Carlo Borg Bonaci, the popular presenter behind Magic Malta’s Carlo’s Breakfast Café that airs every morning.

He first got into radio back in 1987 and has since always been around in one way or another, whether DJing in clubs, presenting TV shows or hosting the Malta Music Awards.

“I’ve always loved music,” he says with a smile, “and I wanted to make it my career from a very young age. Thankfully, with lots of hard work, that happened and it’s great to be able to bring people their favourite songs every day.

After all, music is all about making people smile and that’s what I set out to do.”

How would you describe your relationship with money?

We’re big enemies. I am always on the chase!

What percentage of your life do you spend shopping?

About 15 per cent, or less. I am privileged that my wife knows exactly what I like, so she does most of it for me. Ironically, I often end up returning the things I buy myself, either because the size isn’t right or because I don’t like the fit. On the other hand, the things my wife chooses, stay!

Do you think that because something is more expensive it is automatically better?

Not always, but sometimes it is worth investing in the ‘real thing’.

What’s a hobby you spend money on?

In the past it was my vinyl and CD music collection, but now it would have to be travelling.

How would you describe your style? Is fashion an important part of your life?

You do know I’m a guy right?

Well, I guess I consider my style to be conservative, cool and casual, with a touch of elegance. Wow, that was a hard one!

What’s the one fashion item you couldn’t live without?

Shoes, definitely shoes! My ‘zarbun’. And watches.

Dining out; we’re always on the lookout for a new dining experience, especially when in Gozo.

Do you hoard things or regularly throw stuff out?

My wife is definitely best at the ‘throwing out’ job – whatever’s not in use is no longer welcome in our house!

What’s the best bargain you’ve ever made?

I made a brilliant bargain a couple of years back but cannot reveal the details of it as it may ruin its market value locally – sorry! Aside from that, I’ve often picked up some great deals in the January sales.

What is your favourite thing in your whole house?

My barbecue set and digital camera.

If you won the million euro lottery what would you do with the money?

I’d buy a nice property by the sea and do lots of travelling, mainly exploring Asia and South America.

What three items would you take to a desert island?

A pocket mirror to use for communication by bouncing sunrays, fishing tackle in case of a long stay and a portable digital radio to entertain myself.

What are you most enjoying about summer – are you a summer person?

Absolutely not – please bring back my winter! I can’t stand the heat and the fact that you need to go out in the evenings to escape the indoor temperatures. That said, I do love the socialising aspect of summer.

Given the choice, would you drink champagne or beer?

Neither is the ideal choice for me, but I would pick beer if pushed.

What’s the most money you’ve spent in one go?

It was on buying a DJ console back in the 80s. It was worth it though, as I used it at gigs all over the islands.

What would be three things on your ideal celebrity rider?

A nice bar of dark chocolate, mineral water and internet access.

If you could DJ alongside anyone, who and where would that be?

It would have to be the legendary Frankie Knuckles (American DJ, producer and remixer) somewhere on Comino. I know, keep dreaming, Carlo!

Fish soup to start, a fenkata for my main course, and helwa tat-tork and baked nuts for dessert. Oh, and a portion of cassatella Siciliana to finish off!

What is your favourite musicrelated item?

I’ve got some artist autographs and pictures that I treasure, especially as they relate to my radio and clubbing career.

What would you never buy?

Favours and a three-letter word… Well, jokes apart, even if I had the money I doubt I would ever buy a personal jet – roaming around the airport dutyfree lounge and doing a little shopping is all part and parcel of my holiday experience!

What would be your last meal?

he bedroom, just like any other room in the house, is made up of several different elements including furniture, soft furnishings, flooring and lighting. In order for your bedroom to achieve the desired effect, all these features should work well together. If you’re looking to give your bedroom a new look, there are a number of things you can do that will make a huge difference – from painting, plastering, adding partitions, gypsum works and soffits, to small touches like switching up furniture and soft furnishings, and hanging affordable art.

An element that we don’t often give much thought to but which makes a huge difference to any room is lighting. Lighting sets the mood just as much as colour scheme, so think about what you want your bedroom to feel like before deciding on lighting. Jevon Gatt of AGF Turnkey highlights popular

For a romantic atmosphere some opt for a light fixture that beams light from the headboard toward the ceiling.”

Overhead lighting often runs the risk of giving the room a harsh feel, so aside from these techniques, try introducing floor or table lamps for a softer effect, or installing a custom

designed soffit to illuminate specific areas you’d like to shed light on. When planning your soffit, Jevon advises keeping your bedroom’s layout in mind above all else. “The most important thing is to take the furniture layout into consideration, so that the soffit can be worked in relation to it. If the soffit does not respect the furniture, the lighting will not make sense within the environment.” The Arsenio Projects’ spokesperson agrees, stating “the most important thing is to be sure how the furniture is going to be placed. Once that is planned, just leave it to the professionals!”

Once the lighting is right, you can work on colour scheme via walls, furniture and soft furnishings like curtains and linens.

The trick here is to have a vision in mind, and ensure all the elements work harmoniously.

KEEPING YOUR COOL As air-conditioning technology keeps developing, Best Buy provides some advice on what to look out for when buying a new AC unit.

T

he truth is there is nothing better than entering an air-conditioned room on a hot day, but there are numerous factors to consider when buying an AC. If your current unit has an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of eight or less, then it is probably a good time to replace it, as the higher the number is, the more efficient the unit and the less it will cost to run.

The first step is deciding between a window-mounted, portable or wall-mounted AC unit. The former are the most common and have the advantage of being low-cost and work with the existent electrical wir-

ing in your home, making them easy to install.

It is also a good idea to measure the rooms to be cooled and to check the EER of the unit. When it comes to cooling capacity, which is measured in BTU/hour (British Thermal Units per Hour), the higher the number, the more powerful the unit is.

Other factors which affect the required capacity include the number and size of the windows, the direction the room faces, available shade, how well the room is insulated and what appliances are found in the room. The easiest way to calculate the required size is to

use one of the online guides, as it is important to get a unit as close to the correct capacity as possible. Too small a unit may not be able to cool the room on a hot day. Too large a unit will cost more to operate. It may also cool the room too quickly and leave excessive moisture in the air.

Whichever unit you eventually decide on, you should expect it to have an adjustable thermostat, at least two cooling speeds, two fan speeds and an energy-efficient setting, which stops the fan when the unit is not cooling. The unit should have an adjustable vent, which allows you to aim the cool air, and an exhaust vent setting

allowing fresh air to be introduced from outside. The filter should be easily accessible for removal and cleaning. Furthermore some units come with an electrostatic filter, either standard or as an option, which will remove extremely small particles from the air, a super feature for people with allergies.

Modern Refrigeration Ltd owner Brian Azzopardi recommends looking at the unit’s

consumption and making sure that it conforms with ERP (Energy Using Product) regulations before committing to a purchase, and also advises ensuring that it comes with the right guarantee.

He adds that it is always better to buy an AC unit from specialised shops, as they are in a better position to give the required advice.

When looking to buy an AC unit get advice and feedback from others who have experience and knowledge. Read reviews and model comparisons from reliable sources, and be on the lookout for complaints about specific models or brands.

Once you’ve purchased your AC, ensure it lasts you longer and cools the place better by sticking to the recommended annual service. This also helps to keep consumption low, Mr Azzopardi explains, adding that the ideal time to have this done would be before summer gets into full swing.
