Trends & Outlook 2026

What we expect to see across the Asian content landscape, amid global uncertainty, is the likely resurgence of uplifting, feel-good content following years of more intense stories. Second, socially-relevant stories that engage with real issues will remain important for buyers. Finally, with advertising revenues still under pressure, many broadcasters and platforms will continue leaning on acquired and cross-border content to help sustain their programming slates.”

Asia focus in 2026

As we elevate the scale and quality of our productions, we aim to expand into new territories while deepening our presence in markets where we have strong audiences. Ultimately, our goal is to create stories unbound by borders while staying authentically Filipino.”

Pia Laurel, Sales Head, OTT and Co-production

Since 1953, ABS-CBN has been a premiere source of high-quality Filipino content and primarily involved in high caliber productions for television, online and over-the-top platforms, cable, satellite, cinema, events and radio, for both domestic and international markets. ABS-CBN’s road to transformation provided not only strong affinity with the local audiences, but also agility in going global, with 60,000+ hours sold worldwide in over 50 territories.

Genres

Our drama slate spans various genres from romance to family, to thrillers, crime, and action. We also produce LGBTQ+ stories reflecting diverse perspectives and experiences. Film-wise, we cater to a broad spectrum of audiences with titles covering romance, family, horror, and comedy.

Original production/ co-production

First seen on Netflix Philippines, IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY – the Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean drama from CJ ENM and Studio Dragon – debuted at number one on the platform, consistently topping the viewing charts. The series follows a cynical author who is forced to confront her emotional wounds upon meeting a man who challenges her worldview.

Romantic thriller THE ALIBI centers on the heir to a media empire who hires an escort to serve as his alibi after being accused of murder; their agreement turning into a dangerous dance within a web of secrets. The series successfully launched on Prime Video ahead of its TV release, consistently ranking #1 in the Philippines during its run.

Strengthening our partnership with Prime Video, we’ve developed a new original series called THE SILENT NOISE that follows a family left fractured after a deaf young boy misinterprets his mother’s affair and causes a tragic accident. Launching March 20 th in the Philippines and in more than 240 territories worldwide, the series explores the cost of accountability, while aiming to raise awareness for the deaf community.

As global platforms continually trust us to help build their local slates, we remain ever grateful and equally excited to share even more entertaining and thought-provoking stories with the world.

Trends & Outlook in the next 12 months

First, generative AI and hyper-personalisation will be leveraged on more by platforms to tailor experiences, enabling more dynamic and responsive storytelling. This will not only enhance viewer satisfaction but also open new avenues for data-driven monetisation. Sports remains one of the genres that consistently delivers real-time audience attention but will be the focus of fewer platforms given the costs as well as expertise to deliver that best-in-class experience. Third, we foresee a surge in on-ground experiences that are both un-piratable and monetisable – meet-and-greet events with K-stars, concerts, and fan activations and extensions of big hits eg Netfliux’s K-pop Demon Hunters Sing Along in cinemas. These formats offer unique value propositions for both audiences and brands.”

Agnes Rozario, Chief Content Officer, Astro

Co-productions have worked well in the film space enabling us both domestic and regional exposure for our films and well as strong support from sponsors. We place strong emphasis on original productions, with standout titles such as Aadhira, First Wives, and Big Stage Alpha, a boyband/talent discovery format that has already produced two music hits and built a loyal fanbase. We actively produce and co-produce across film, drama and non-scripted formats, including live shows. Our collaborations with clients and partners often involve developing creative solutions tailored to their audience and brand objectives.

Asia focus in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, our primary focus in Asia will be guided by relevance and audience behaviour. We aim to champion local IPs and stories that extend beyond Malaysia, unlocking better monetisation and distribution opportunities with regional partners. Live original formats will remain a core offering, while we continue building a pipeline of digital and social-first content designed for engagement and monetisation.”

In 2026, our objective is to have continued success in the region by focussing on key markets and super brands while finding new opportunities. We also want to scale the regional footprint of our popular formats within high-growth Asian territories. We are executing a strategy of focused market penetration, leveraging our library of high-quality, proven IPs to provide partners with a low-risk, high-reward content. Original production/ co-production

Despite global market volatility, our stellar IP continues to hold ground. We’re delighted that MasterChef Asia will return, featuring the finest culinary talent from across the continent vying for the ultimate crown.

Trends & Outlook 2026

Community-led formats that facilitate real-time viewer engagement are set to be the “showstoppers” of 2026, aligning perfectly with the burgeoning trend of creator-content partnerships.

Social media has evolved beyond a mere promotional tool; it is now a full-scale innovation lab offering massive monetisation potential. As the creator economy continues to thrive, we are entering the ideal window to leverage the synergy between creators and established content, allowing both to benefit from each other’s unique strengths. Lastly, we anticipate a massive resurgence in reboots. In an increasingly uncertain M&A landscape, reboots serve as a critical risk-mitigation strategy. By revitalising shows with proven track records, we can leverage existing fandoms while tapping into the powerful combination of cost efficiency and nostalgia.”

Produced by CreAsia Studio (part of Endemol Shine India) in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Macao Tourism in Macao, the series is available for licensing outside of WBD-reserved territories starting in Q4 2026. MasterChef further continues its winning run, spanning to territories like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while the successful launch of The Face Men Thailand (Season 4), has gained significant traction across both linear TV and Netflix following its relaunch last year. The Pinoy Big Brother: Collab Edition 2.0 has provided a solid headstart, further consolidating our position as the market leader for formats in the territory. Additionally, we are thrilled to see Deal or No Deal return to the Philippines after a decade-long hiatus. And our commitment to fresh, creative energy is highlighted by exciting new additions like Football Island and the Indian-origin fitness reality format Battleground

While the use of AI in content production has become more common than ever, the industry might start discussing protocols for its usage to avoid ambiguity and protect creatives.

Trends & Outlook 2026

Premium brands, franchises, and talent continue to matter.

focused on building businesses that can grow across markets, and

Kit Yow, Director, Content Sales –

In a crowded marketplace, recognizable IP cuts through the noise. Audiences increasingly gravitate toward content they know and trust, making established franchises and talent-led brands more valuable than ever.

At the same time, vertical video is rapidly emerging as a meaningful new content business. What began as a mobile-first format is evolving into a scalable entertainment ecosystem with its own audiences, creators, and monetization models. The opportunity extends beyond short-form content to identifying the next generation of talent, IP, and franchises.

Another key growth engine is the newly formed FOX Creator Studios, which partners with the world’s most influential and prolific creators. From our deep global distribution expertise to world class ad sales, brand partnership, marketing and production capabilities, FOX is uniquely positioned to help creators scale and grow their ideas and brands worldwide. Since the studio was introduced in January, their creator roster spans verticals from food and comedy to automotive and lifestyle with top creators such as iconic chef Gordon Ramsay, comedian Tom Segura, and viral creators like Josh Richards, Emelia Hartford and My Nguyen’s MyHealhyDish, all partnering with FOX to create premium IP, original formats, and enduring entertainment brands for global audiences.

Advances in AI and localization are also making content more global and more accessible. Great stories can travel farther and faster than ever before, creating new opportunities for rights holders, platforms, and audiences across Asia.

At the end of the day, profitability is always in style. The companies that win will combine great content, strong brands, smart distribution, and sustainable business models.

Production

Fremantle continues to see strong momentum across Asia, with several flagship formats achieving significant milestones and finding new audiences across the region. In the Philippines, Family Feud recently celebrated its fourth anniversary on air and remains one of the country’s most popular game shows. In Cambodia, The X Factor Cambodia has returned after nearly seven years off air and is enjoying a fantastic run, generating impressive numbers across digital and social platforms. Meanwhile, Take Me Out Thailand is currently airing its 20th season, a remarkable milestone that reflects its enduring appeal with Thai audiences. Each of these shows has taken its own journey, but together they demonstrate how well-loved formats can continue to evolve and remain relevant for audiences over time. These successes reflect the strength and longevity of Fremantle’s format portfolio, as well as the value of our partnerships across the region.

Our focus in 2026 is to unlock new sources of value for our partners and our IP. We’re looking at more creative ways to develop, finance and monetise content. This includes strategic partnerships, branded entertainment, co-productions and new commercial models that can help content travel further and generate value across multiple platforms and markets. As traditional funding models continue to evolve, we believe the biggest opportunities in Asia will come not just from great storytelling, but from rethinking how content is funded, distributed and commercialised.”

Trends & Outlook 2026

• Buyers are becoming more disciplined in their commissioning decisions, placing greater emphasis on content that can deliver measurable value and long-term returns.

• While local content remains a priority, there is an increasing focus on stories that can resonate both locally and internationally.

• We are seeing growing demand for IP that can live beyond a single commission or platform. Buyers are increasingly seeking content that can be adapted, extended and monetised in multiple ways, creating deeper audience engagement and longerterm value.”

Asia’s media landscape will be shaped by accelerating cordcutting - with tens of millions of subscribers expected to transition away from linear pay TV, alongside the rise of operator-led streaming bundles. Buyers are increasingly focused on adaptable IP, coproduction opportunities, and format sales that balance risk with creative ambition. Distinctive, character driven storytelling remains in demand, while consolidation, aggregation, and smarter deal structures will define the next phase of growth, creating new opportunities for collaboration across the region.”

A+E Korea, launched in 2017, invests in and produces Korean dramas and unscripted content with top creators, operating HISTORY and Lifetime TV channels alongside a digital studio for original formats.

Original Production

A+E Global Media recognized the global potential of Korean content early and established its presence in Korea in 2017 with the launch of the HISTORY and Lifetime TV channels, while immediately investing in and producing Korean original content.

Over the past decade, A+E Korea has invested in 13 premium Korean drama series, distributing them globally across multiple platforms and territories. Two additional dramas, Love in Sync and Oh! My Guard, are scheduled for release in 2026. Key titles include Backstreet Rookie, A Good Day To Be A Dog, If You Wish Upon Me, and The Witch

Following the launch of the HISTORY and Lifetime channels in 2017, A+E Korea began investing in and producing Korean unscripted shows from its first year of operation, starting with 10 original titles. Over the past decade, the company has produced a total of 72 unscripted TV titles representing more than 910 hours of programming. Representative titles include League of Universities: The Athlete Boys, Travel Diary Series, Jae Friends: Village. Most projects were co-produced with Korea’s leading broadcasters, including MBC, KBS, and SBS, with many of these titles also distributed internationally.

Digital Studio

In response to the explosive growth of the digital content market, A+E Korea established its Digital Studio in 2018 to produce original digital-first entertainment content. Primarily distributed through YouTube, the studio has produced 47 digital unscripted titles totaling more than 180 hours over the past nine years. Its portfolio includes Dalla Studio, one of Korea’s leading YouTube entertainment channels. Among its flagship franchises is Nego King, Korea’s premier commerce-entertainment show, which A+E Korea has produced since 2022 and is currently airingits eighth season. The series has accumulated more than 190 million views to date.

In 2026, A+E Korea’s primary focus is to serve as a global gateway for Korean IP, helping premium local stories generate long-term value across international markets through A+E Global Media’s worldwide network. Beyond distribution, we are increasingly focused on codeveloping premium IP from the earliest stages with Korean creators and partners. Through global distribution and cross-border coproductions, we aim to build sustainable Korean content franchises that resonate not only across Asia, but also with audiences in Europe and other global markets.”

TV Channels

A+E Korea launched the flagship A+E Global Media channels HISTORY and Lifetime in Korea in 2017 and continues to operate them today. Since entering the Korean pay-TV market, the channels have achieved broad nationwide distribution, reaching nearly all major platform operators. HISTORY is available in approximately 20 million households, while Lifetime reaches around 30 million households, representing about 85% of total TV households in Korea.

HISTORY primarily targets male audiences with a strong interest in factual entertainment, featuring premium A+E Global Media-produced documentaries alongside military, mystery, and science programming. Lifetime targets women aged 30–49, combining popular U.S. Lifetime reality series and TV movies with locally produced Korean original entertainment content.

TRENDS & OUTLOOK 2026 “Over the next year, Asia’s content landscape will be shaped less by individual formats and more by how projects are structured and financed. Crossborder co-productions are requiring clearer creative alignment earlier in the process, while tighter timelines and margin pressure are forcing producers to rethink scale, speed and consistency. These conditions are also accelerating more disciplined use of technology – particularly virtual production and AI – not to replace creativity, but to reduce friction and risk across production and post.”

ASIA FOCUS IN 2026 “Our primary focus is a dual-track expansion, scaling our premium internal coproduction slate while leading a dedicated push into the micro drama space. We are not just testing the waters, we are leveraging our unscripted and scripted expertise to define the premium standard for short form storytelling. This allows us to capture the full spectrum of viewership, from cinematic streamers to mobile first audiences.”

CREATIVE/TECHNICAL INNOVATION IN 2026 “We’re most interested in how virtual production and AI can shift decision-making earlier – helping creative teams resolve look, scale, and world-building before productions become costly to change. The impact isn’t just visual; it’s organisational. Earlier clarity leads to smoother shoots, fewer late adjustments, and more predictable post-production, which is increasingly critical in a fast-moving, multimarket production environment.”

Free-to-air television in Hong Kong has for the better part of a decade been a two-horse race: incumbent TVB, holding 60-70% of primetime drama share and 79% market share (2025), and ViuTV as the smaller but persistent challenger that built its identity on youth appeal and idols along with big-brand sports rights that it shares with sister payTV platform Now TV; ViuTV is part of listed telco HKT/PCCW.

This year, the Hong Kong-listed i-Cable Communications’ revived its HOY channels, potentially bringing a third player onto the field. Three years after the group pulled the plug on its pay-TV business to focus on freeto-air, i-Cable is proposing a name change to CTF Media & Entertainment Limited / 周大 福传媒娱乐有限公司, and is operating three restructured channels with distinct remits in addition to sports. Underpinning all three is a multiplatform strategy – heavy digital activation running alongside the linear broadcast led by digital veteran Ivy Wong as CEO and executive director of i-Cable Communications.

HOY’s priorities – younger creators, KOL-driven variety shows, international content – read as a direct challenge to ViuTV’s playbook rather than an attempt to challenge TVB’s hold on mainstream Chinese drama audiences. The big question is whether HOY can translate its advantages, including synergies with parent company the Chow Tai Fook (CTF) Group, into audience share.

TVB, meanwhile, has changed its name from Television Broadcasts Ltd to TVB Ltd / 無綫集團有限公司 after more than

60 years. The change, the company says, reflects its diversified media and entertainment business in Hong Kong and Macau, Chinese Mainland and overseas, including terrestrial TV and digital streaming platforms in Hong Kong and internationally, content creation and production, artist management and IP distribution. “We have grown and evolved well beyond our roots as a pure TV broadcaster,” company bosses said in March 2026.

TVB remains a powerful player in Chinese serialised entertainment, including production partnerships with Mainland platforms Youku and Tencent Video. Flagship titles include “The Queen of News 2” (新聞女王 2), produced with Youku. The five other coproductions include “Themis” (正義女神), “Mrs. Revenge” (夫妻的博弈), and “I Only Live Twice” (模仿人生) with Youku.

TVB has also embraced AI production, releasing its first AI-generated microdrama, “You and Only You” (在我心中 — 你是獨一 無二) on the TVB Plus and myTV SUPER digital platforms as well as on Tencent Video in September 2025. Vertical initiatives continue, including a slate of adaptations of original TVB IP with Bytedance-owned Chinese short-drama platform, Hongguo. Hong Kong’s government-funded broadcaster, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), launched its new news and current affairs schedule – including English-language content – on the TV32 channel in July this year. The network continues to promise objective and comprehensive news, “while serving as a platform to assist the government in explaining its policies and presenting the true picture of Hong Kong to the world”.

The network continues to expand its slate of locally produced entertainment, factual, music and lifestyle content, while strengthening creator collaborations and cross-platform engagement.
