Strengthening our partnership with Prime Video, we’ve developed a new original series called THE SILENT NOISE that follows a family left fractured after a deaf young boy misinterprets his mother’s affair and causes a tragic accident. • Movie: AR spearheads the Rocket Programme, a strategic movie co-development initiative uniting film companies from Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. Supported by Taiwan Creative Six movies co-development collaboration Content Agency (TAICCA) and organised in partnership with MyStory Entertainment, the programme aims to drive six co-produced film projects from script stage through to market-ready pitches at TCCF 2025.

• Variety: AR and Taiwan’s TAICCA launched the LEAP Co-Development Programme: Variety Show, attracting 85 submissions and featuring eight top Korean producers. It concluded with a final pitch at ATF 2024 in Singapore. A regional co-production is set for 2025, with AR executive producing alongside Culinary Class War writer Mo Eun-seol.

• Pre-school animation: AR launched the All Star Pre-School Animated Series Creative and Co-Development Programme with Taiwan’s PTS XS to connect Korean and Taiwanese creators for co-productions. Two projects were selected and have entered development with leading Korean animation companies.

Micro Drama: Co-Production & Regional Distribution Over 150 micro dramas have launched across various platforms in the region to date, with several dedicated micro drama apps set to roll out on major telco shelves across Southeast Asia.

The series is set to air in Japan in April 2026 with Boat Rocker distributing the series globally.

Mega-media consolidation seems unlikely to end any time soon. We will likely see consolidation extend to the production industry with M&A occurring at indie studios. ould Myanmar’s relative invisibility on the international – or even regional – video entertainment stage be coming to an end?

Multiple signs of life since January 2026 indicate that the answer might just be maybe.

Follow the crumbs: a global shout-out to shareholders from French giant Canal+ in March; a greenlight for the first domestic multi-season premium period drama with franchise hopes and regional potential, announced in April; the inclusion of Myanmar in a three-series Netflix deal with Singapore’s Mediacorp; and Myanmar’s debut at Hong Kong Filmart, also in March. These followed HBO Max’s rollout in Myanmar in October 2025 – itself not enough to signal anything, but combined with other signs?

Maybe.

For the regional/international industry, Canal+, which operates the Canal+ Myanmar platform, is the country’s happiest entertainment story.

Reporting its annual results for 2025, the global operator called Myanmar’s performance in 2025 “exceptional”, despite challenges related to the earthquake in March. Both the subscriber base and revenues almost doubled. Canal+ attributed this to an enhanced content line-up, led by exclusive Premier League rights, which it said attracted “tens of thousands” of new subscribers.

Myanmar’s first multi-season period drama – Canal+ Myanmar’s “Beneath The Glass Sky” – releases at the end of 2026, creating the first fictional universe of its kind and kicking off French-led platform Canal+ Myanmar’s long-term franchise plans. The second 24-episode season is slated for June

2027, extending the story to different parts of the sprawling fictional kingdom of Mahaw Thein Kha, a world of warring provinces, palace intrigue and elaborate power structures.

The announcement in capital city Yangon showed one thing: domestic glamour and creativity against a political and economic landscape viewed by the international production and distribution community as tough at best.

Myanmar’s filmmakers continue to be much more visible internationally than their TV counterparts, thanks both to a plethora of festivals and funds that cast a wide geographic net and organisations that support Burmese artists in exile.

The film industry is plainly split into two: filmmakers in exile whose work isn’t seen in Myanmar if it doesn’t comply with strict military junta guidelines, and domestic output that sticks to the rules but is accused of burying reality.

Burmese titles are a staple on the international festival circuit. These include Min Min Hein’s feature-length documentary “Untitled” – one of 14 projects selected for the 2025 Busan Int’l Film Festival’s Asian Cinema Fund. Director The Maw Naing’s “MA – Cry of Silence”, inspired by the 2012 women’s strikes, did the rounds in 2024/5.

Sein Lyan Tun’s “The Bamboo Family” and Zaw Bo Bo Hein’s “The Wedding Gift” were on the Singapore Int’l Film Festival grant list in 2024. And those are but a few...

Domestic production and exhibition is another story. Reliable box office data is thin, and general opinion is that a combo of Covid and the coup in 2021 ended a few years of rising film output and optimism.

Myanmar Free TV 5plus Channel 5plus offers local and foreign content, including Indian programming and TV drama series from China, Thailand and Korea.

Broadcasting nationwide, 5 Plus is owned by the Family Entertainment Group.

Channel K Kaung Myanmar Aung’s Channel K (or Kaytumadi) offers business content, movies, music and culture content targeting the 18-38 demographic. Launched in Feb 2019, Channel K covers all 15 states and is also available via streaming.

MRTV-4, Channel 7, Maharbawdi Channel 24/7 (Forever Group) Leading commercial broadcaster, the Forever Group, operates general entertainment channel MRTV-4 HD (launched 2004) and youth-focused Channel 7 HD (2012), offering drama series, reality formats, entertainment shows and news.

Maharbawdi Channel, a 24/7 Buddhistfocused channel, provides dharma talks and spiritual programming. The group also operates Pyone Play, a free streaming platform with live and on-demand content.

Fortune TV Operated by Fortune International, Fortune TV launched in February 2019 as part of the group’s expansion into digital TV and telecommunications. The channel offers lifestyle, business, and entertainment content, including local content alongside international movies and Chinese, Hindi and Filipino series. Targeting urban audiences, Fortune TV maintains nationwide terrestrial coverage.

Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) Myanmar’s Ministry of Information set up Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) in 1980, and started broadcasting in 1981.

MRTV operates 10 TV channels, covering news, entertainment, education, and cultural content. Digital broadcasting (DVBT2) began in October 2013.

Myawaddy Television (MWD-TV) Operated by Myanmar’s Ministry of Defence since 1995, MWD-TV broadcasts seven channels providing music, sports, 48

entertainment, news and educational programming. The network also produces local content and covers military-related and national-interest events.

MNTV, MITV, Channel 9 (Shwe Than Lwin Media) Shwe Than Lwin Media operates three major free-TV channels: Myanmar National TV (MNTV), Myanmar International TV (MITV) and Channel 9. Flagship MNTV offers entertainment, drama, new, and variety programming, including acquired foreign series. In addition to free-TV channels, the group also operates the subscription satellite service Sky Net DTH and radio stations.

YTV (Young TV) Launched in January 2019 and operated

by My Multimedia Group, a subsidiary of the Young Investment Group, YTV is a youth-oriented free-to-air channel. The channel’s content includes foreign movies (Hindi and Hollywood), TV series, animation, religious programming, game and talk shows. YTV reaches 151 towns across Myanmar, covering approximately 70% of the country.

Pay TV

Myansat DTH Launched in January 2025, Myansat DTH is Myanmar’s fourth and latest DTH satellite pay-television service, operated

by Borderless Broadcast Co Ltd. The platform offers nationwide coverage and a variety of channel packages. Customers can access updates and support via its official Facebook page and the MYANSAT mobile app, which also allows subscription management and service information.

SkyNet DTH SkyNet DTH, owned and managed by the Shwe Than Lwin Media group, is a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite platform launched in November 2010. The service broadcasts over 80 SD and HD channels and provides nationwide coverage across Myanmar via satellite transmission.

SkyNet also offers the SkyNet Myanmar mobile app, which allows subscribers to stream live TV and on-demand channels.

Streaming/OTT

Canal+ Myanmar FG Canal+ Myanmar FG, part of France’s Canal+ Group, operates one of the largest commercial DTH pay TV services in Myanmar. It evolved from the former 4TV service operated with Forever Group and now offers a broad mix of local and international channels, including multiple in-house Canal+ channels and sports services. Mini-Shal plan costs from MMK3,900/US$1.85 a month for 29+ channels. Shal+ plan costs MMK10,000/ US$4.76 a month for 41+ channels and MMK17,900/US$8.52 a month for the HtooShal+ plan (61+ channels). Canal+ also offers MyCanal, an OTT extension of the pay-TV service.

It operates under the broader Frontiir network brand and delivers affordable internet access across major cities including Yangon and Mandalay, with residential and business plans.

Mahar Mahar evolved from a Myanmar free-to-air movie channel into a local OTT streaming service offering thousands of titles, including local films and series alongside selected Asian content.

MRTV Live / MRTV App The digital streaming service of Myanmar’s state broadcaster, Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV). The platform provides live streaming of MRTV television and radio channels, news clips and video content. The service is accessible via MRTV’s official website and mobile applications.

myCANAL Myanmar An OTT extension of Canal+ Myanmar FG, the app offers live TV channels, catchup services and on-demand content alongside pay-TV packages for Canal+ subscribers.

Pyone Play Pyone Play is the Forever Group’s digital streaming platform, launched in 2016 to provide free online access to the broadcaster’s TV content. The platform offers both live streaming and on-demand viewing, featuring programmes from MRTV-4, Channel 7 and related channels. Available via web browsers and mobile apps.

Telcos Atom Telenor Myanmar was rebranded as Atom in June 2022 following the closure of the sale of the unit by Norwegian’s Telenor Group in March 2022 to Lebanese investment firm M1 Group. ATOM provides

Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) State-owned MPT provides internet, fixedline and mobile services to more than 23 million subscribers. The telco launched fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in Yangon in Aug 2017. MPT operates under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Mytel Myanmar’s fourth telco, Mytel, launched in 2018, offering nationwide 2G/4G services. Mytel is owned by Myanmar National Tele & Communications (MNTC), formed in Jan 2017 by Vietnam’s Viettel (49%), Star High (28%) and a consortium of local companies operating under MNTC (23%).

U9 Myanmar (formerly Ooredoo Myanmar) Formerly Ooredoo Myanmar, the operator was rebranded U9 following the transfer of ownership to a Singapore-linked investment group in 2024-2025. U9 Myanmar continues to provide nationwide mobile voice and data services, including 3G/4G connectivity.

Kefka Film Production Founded in 2019 in Yangon by filmmakers Soe Arkar Htun, Khin Warso and Sai Naw Kham, Kefka Film Production focuses on socially engaged cinema, producing feature films, creative documentaries, mixed-genre projects, and short-format content with a distinctive voice.

Mandalay Productions Mandalay Productions is a full-service film and video production company offering feature films, TV and commercial shoots, casting, studio facilities, and production support for domestic and international clients. The company recently produced the 2024 feature film “Unbroken Ties” (“Myittar”).

Shutter Production Shutter Production produces films, documentaries, commercials and music videos. The company works across entertainment and branded content projects, supporting local productions as well as commercial media campaigns.

Yangon Film Services Yangon Film Services is a production and facilitation arm linked to Yangon Film School, providing documentary, film and TV production as well as production services for international shoots in Myanmar.

Regulators Ministry of Information (MOI) The MOI comprises two departments – Myanmar Television and Radio (TRD), Information and Public Relations – and three enterprises (printing and publishing, news and periodicals, motion picture), and maintains tight control of the country’s media environment.
