We have many options with quality residential neighborhoods. We have more recreational opportunities than ever before and more than most cities in the U.S. Our city is financially stable and well-operated which gives great confidence to citizens. Again, we are a place where people want to be!

New things are happening every single day in Southaven — from new businesses and restaurants opening, to new subdivisions and commercial developments. What has changed in Southaven from a year ago?
Our city continues to be a dynamic city with tremendous economic demand in both the commercial and residential arenas. Residential development speaks loudly regarding the fact that people want to live in our city because we are having success with the critical factors of public safety; quality infrastructure; a well-maintained and beautified city; ongoing parks and recreational enhancement; economic development and job opportunities; and a financially secure city. We’ve seen continued development and redevelopment throughout our city in all commercial facets: industrial, retail, restaurant, and service. We’ve continued to “roll on” and “hit on all cylinders” in a positive way. Why are so many people and new businesses choosing to come to Southaven? I could write a book about this, but it is really a very simple summary: Southaven is a place where people want to be! “To be” meaning: to live, to work, and to visit. We manage public safety extremely
Southaven made a decision to invest in more police and to spend more on its roads, and you have also invested in the city’s parks. Why is this important to you? All of this is critical to keeping Southaven a great place to live. Things change in every city and new challenges are faced. Management of these changes is what protects our quality of life for the future. Increased police investment (a 60 percent increase in five years budgetarily and 36 percent officer growth) is imperative to protect us from the new challenges brought by changes in our society and general economic and population growth. Our street resurfacing budget is 538 percent higher than the first full year we tracked every street in 2015. The conditions of your streets say it all: safety and ease of transportation, pride in the community, a well-run operation, high property values, crime-deterrence, and general happiness of citizens. Parks create opportunities for youth and enhance the health and quality of life for all citizens. In addition, sports tournament operations and amphitheater concerts play a significant role in growing our tourism draw which benefits all citizens financially whether or not they personally use the facilities or not. Southaven has a very busy and active Chamber of Commerce. How does this help you do your job? Our Chamber of Commerce is well led and has a tremendous membership that is actively engaged in making our city a better place to do business and live, in general. They are a huge complement to my efforts in making our city a great place to be!
You have been mayor now for over 10 years. What keeps you going? The job as mayor is difficult at times and requires extremely hard work, 24/7! I continue to thrive on delivering my promise to the people of Southaven that I would do or advocate for action what is best for Southaven as a whole 100 percent of the time, regardless of the challenge or opposition. It’s rewarding to me to know that I have delivered this promise and will continue to do so until my last day. I must add that I love to see progress knowing my work has helped in making our city a better place. Looking ahead, what will we see happening in Southaven in 2024? What’s on the drawing board? In 2024, people will see aggressive road infrastructure improvement to continue improving our general transportation grid and prepare us for future growth. The leisure and recreation district at the Snowden District will continue to have tremendous momentum with new developments coming on both sides of Getwell, in addition to Silo Square. The hotel/convention center project will be under construction, which I believe is the number-one most significant economic development project for Desoto County’s future and will be completed in late 2025. It will be the only convention center in Mississippi with a hotel on-site (a seven-story, 240-room Hilton Embassy Suites with restaurant and resort-style swimming pool with lazy river). This will create new opportunities as well in the Metropolitan District. We will continue to incentivize and promote redevelopment in our West End District. Pedestrian trails will continue to connect larger volumes of land in our city making us a more walkable-healthier community. Parks enhancement projects will include completion of our neighborhood parks trail and pavilion projects, eight new outdoor tennis courts at Snowden Grove, and some special projects to give rebirth to Cherry Valley Park. Operation: Close the Door and a general increase in police presence will be seen to protect our investments and continued quality of life. Specifically regarding public safety, Fire Station #5 will be completed and operational as well as the new Police East Precinct.

As a life-long resident of Southaven, it has been a privilege to watch us go from a small sleepy suburb, to a booming economic driver for Mississippi. Southaven has the amenities to attract young starting families, and as a certified retirement community, it is the perfect place to retire. My wife Lori and I were blessed to both grow up in Southaven, and also to raise our family. It is an honor to serve my hometown, and I believe Southaven’s best days are still ahead of us.
I’ve lived in Southaven my whole life and am a proud graduate of Southaven High School. The people here are great. I became an alderman because I wanted to be able to shape the future of my hometown. Our city is thriving. It’s exciting to see all of the things going on from old downtown to Silo Square. With great schools and good neighborhoods, you won’t find a better place to raise a family. But Southaven is also a great retirement community too. As a certified Mississippi retirement community, we’ve got lots here for our seniors to do. I’m so happy to see my city prosper. Southaven is just full of friendly people who care about the community.

KRISTIAN KELLY I moved to Southaven in August of 2009. I quickly fell in love with the area due to the kindhearted nature of its citizens. I love the great combination of a growing city with the feeling of community embedded in it still. I look forward to the future of the Top of Mississippi!

CHARLIE HOOTS I’ve lived in Southaven since I was in my early 20s. I think Southaven is the greatest city in Mississippi. People look to us as an example. My main focus is to keep the hometown feel as much as possible so when our people come home they can come home to a safe place to worship and raise their kids and have a great environment. We have great amenities here, but don’t have all the hustle and bustle of Memphis.

WILLIAM JEROME It’s a privilege and honor to serve the citizens of Southaven. Having grown up in Horn Lake, I’ve lived in Southaven since 1992. My wife and I were married in 1994 and we chose to raise our children in the greatest city in Mississippi. Southaven has become one of the most eclectic and diverse cities in North Mississippi and I am extremely proud to call Southaven my home. I am especially proud to represent Ward 3 and enjoy the different areas across the city that blend together to make our city the “Top of Mississippi.”

JOHN DAVID WHEELER I’m from Tunica originally but have lived in DeSoto County since 1991. We have really worked hard to make Southaven a great place to “live, work, and play.” There is so much going on here. I drive by Silo Square every day because it is just down the street from where I live, and it amazes me to see all that is going on there. Southaven is right next to Memphis with big-city amenities, but without the big-city issues. We have been going in the right direction, and I think the Mayor and the Board have done a good job of looking ahead down the road to plan ahead for the next 10 to 20 years.

RAYMOND FLORES I’m a transplant, having moved here in 1994 and to Southaven in 2000 when I married a Southaven girl. I enjoy being an alderman because I can help shape the direction of the city and leave a legacy for future residents to enjoy. I think you will find that Southaven has the best amenities and the best people anywhere. We are the third-largest city in Mississippi, but Southaven still has that small-town feel. And better yet, people who live in Southaven tend to stay here.

Sandy Avant learned to cook from her French-speaking grandmother. After cooking for the last 15 years for her church family, it just made sense to venture into the catering business. She had planned on retiring this year, but there was always one more client out there seeking her services. Now working for herself, she’s glad her husband convinced her to keep it going! How did you get into the catering business? I was in business under a different name for the last 13 years. I had a partner during that time, but this time around, I’m flying solo-but with a team of dedicated servers. I’ve enjoyed cooking most of my life. I began 15 years ago cooking suppers in my church kitchen. This was born from that — just people starting to ask us kitchen ladies to cater things outside of church, like teacher’s appreciation lunches, band banquets, wedding receptions, and rehearsal dinners. We finally realized we ought to start a full catering business. So we did. What is 662 able to do? My motto in the past was that “no job was too little or too big. “ We have fed up to 500 at band banquets and we have done just a handful for small groups like the Red Hat
Society. We do home parties, rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, holiday dinners, and many other special events. We recently served a fourday event at DeSoto Family Theater and received rave reviews. What type of food is your specialty? I am from south Louisiana, so I love the Cajun cuisine like gumbo, étouffée, and shrimp and grits. Many people in this area don’t really tap into that but every now and then, you get a few folks who are from further south who say they haven’t had good meat pies since they left. So Louisiana cuisine is my speciality, but up here, it’s just down-home good cooking. 662 Catering has a variety of packages to choose from depending on the event or theme. For entrees, we have everything from herb-encrusted pork tenderloin to Napa chicken to creamy shrimp & tasso pasta, and sides such as garlic mashed potatoes, roasted vegetable medley, salads, and a variety of desserts that includes my famous bread pudding, chocolate delight, and lemon icebox cups. What sets you apart from other catering businesses? I have wonderful people working under me. I want everything to be as pleasing as
it can possibly be from the ingredients to the service to the presentation. I think that shows! I’ve built a great rapport with many of the wedding venues in the area — The Gin, One Memphis Street, Cypress Hall, Hedge Farm, and Mallard’s Croft over in Byhalia to name a few. When they witness our level of professionalism and discover that the food is good too, they just love us. Nothing is required of them behind us because we leave the place better than we found it. When you do that, the venue staffers appreciate it and will refer you to their brides. What is the best part of being in the catering business for you? Loving on people with food. It is more of a ministry for me than anything. I know that what we do makes a difference and helps the parties involved to best enjoy their event. That makes my heart happy and makes me want to keep doing it. As I’m now in my sixties and not as young as I used to be, it may take me a little longer to recuperate from larger jobs but I have an enthusiastic team that works with me. We are professional and it is evident in our services-from start to finish.

Tell me a little bit about your business. [Custom Jewelry] was started by my parents, Steve and Sharon Daves. Their first location was on Stateline Road, in what still is the Kroger shopping center. I essentially grew up there (customers still tell me today that they remember watching me ride my tricycle around that store). In 2000, they relocated the store to Swinnea and Goodman, which was also a great location. After 20 years of being there, we were able to open our current location in Silo Square.
What is it like being located in SIlo Square and seeing all of the new developments going on there? We remember when Silo was just a dream and a blueprint. It wasn’t that long ago, but somehow it feels like a lifetime. We are so blessed and honored to be located in Silo Square. Brian and Lexie have done such an amazing job of making Silo everything they told us it would be, maybe even better! The sense of community here is something you can’t understand unless you are actually part of it. Moving to this location has been the best business decision we ever made. Funny enough, we love Silo so much, our residential home is also located here!
What makes Custom Jewelry so special? We pride ourselves in being family-owned and -operated. You know, most jewelry stores take in your items for repair and ship them out to another location. All of our work is done in-house, by me personally. We want
What is the best part of owning a small business for you? It’s being able to be a part of the community. We are just like you. We have kids, we have hobbies, we have dreams. And sometimes because of those things,
we have to close our doors or maybe shut down early some days. I feel like anytime our kids have a choir concert, a football game, or we want to take a family vacation … our community supports that. If we worked for a big chain store, we wouldn’t be able to do those things. It also gives us an opportunity to chase our passions and express our creativity through jewelry. Luckily, I get to design and purchase pieces for our store with no one holding me back. What do you like best about doing business in Southaven? Southaven is like the little engine that could! As a child, I remember how small Southaven was — when Getwell and Goodman was a four-way stop, when Silo Square was a landing strip for prop planes, when Walmart was on Stateline road. This town has grown with leaps and bounds and has been put on the map. As a kid, if you told me this is what Southaven would be, I wouldn’t have believed you. And what’s great, is we aren’t finished yet! We look forward to the many great things that are still to come!

The DeSoto County School District consistently ranks in the Top 20 in Mississippi with its high-test scores, a graduation rate topping over 90 percent, ACT scores above the state average, and a rigorous curriculum that prepares students to move on to a two-year or four-year higher education path to achieve their career goals. However, not all students desire to go to college, and with Mississippi facing a looming shortage of welders, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, truck drivers, and other blue-collar fields, DeSoto County Schools now has another resource available to help those students discover a successful path to the workplace after graduation. As part of a statewide effort to support workforce training and workforce development, DeSoto County Schools now has career coaches in all eight of its high schools. Launched last fall by AccelerateMS, the state’s lead workforce development agency, AccelerateMS awarded grants to local regional development organizations — in the case of DeSoto County, through Three Rivers Planning and Development District — to recruit, hire, and place coaches in school districts across the state. So far, AccelerateMS has placed 176 career coaches in 115 school districts. Coaches are focused on driving growth in targeted sectors to serve better serve Mississippi’s workforce. Lucy Hasselman, assistant superintendent of accreditation and advanced academics with DeSoto County Schools, says the goal of the career coaches is to help students develop a better understanding of their career interests, and to develop a plan with the support of local employers who need skilled workers to get them the skills they will need to find job opportunities in their chosen field. Students gain valuable experience through job shadowing, internships, or training and employment opportunities to prepare them for better career opportunities across the state. “The career coaches ensure high school student are exposed, prepared, and connected to career avenues within and beyond the classroom setting, and target a student’s strengths with intentional academic and work-based learning in pursuit of meaningful professional employment,” Hasselman says. Career coaches offer guidance and support by providing personalized career counseling, identifying each individual’s strengths

and interests, and then connecting students to relevant resources to help them make informed decisions about their academic and career paths. Having a plan for life beyond high school is the key to success for all students. By assisting students in identifying their passions, strengths, and career interests, Hasselman says the career coaches are empowering students to make informed choices and set achievable goals. “Career coaches ensure that students are not just academically proficient, but also equipped with the essential life skills and career insights needed to thrive beyond the classroom,” Hasselman says. “In essence, they contribute significantly to the district’s mission of producing well-rounded, confident, and ambitious students who excel in their chosen careers and make a positive impact on their community and society as a whole.” Michele Everson, the career coach for Southaven High School, says many kids are told by their parents — and society as a whole — from an early age that they have to go to college to succeed. But according to surveys, only 27 percent of adults who graduated from college and obtained a degree are actually working in a job using the degree they received. “We have so many people who are graduating with a mountain of student loan debt and they are having to pay it back but are not even working in the field they got their degree in,” Everson says. “So what we are finding is that you don’t actually have to complete a four-year degree to have a good career option.” Mississippi, like many other states, is under-prepared for the future workforce needs, especially in the trades. Many men and women who work in the trades are 55 and older and are starting to age out of the workforce. The average age of a tradesman now is 58 years old. “I think we are realizing that as a society and community that we are going to be in trouble in a few years when all of these people retire and we have so few tradesmen left,” she says. Career coaches begin working with students starting in the ninth grade up to the twelfth grade. They identify their career goals through one-on-one meetings and group consultations, and help them set goals and identify the steps needed to achieve them, whether it is continuing their education by obtaining a job training certificate, entering the workforce, or a combination of both. Coaches expose students to careers in different industries, let them investigate

options to see what fits them best, and then prepare them for those careers and the best way to accomplish it. Coaches also bring in guest speakers from dif ferent professions and work with employers in the community to set up internships and job shadowing and other meaningful work-based learning opportunities. They also work on soft skills like how to dress in the workplace, interviewing skills, and basic etiquette like making eye contact and shaking hands — skills that are becoming increasingly lost in today’s world where everyone is glued to their cell phone. Everson said students make better choices about the future when they have support at the high school level. “We are doing all of that while they are still in high school so that we can connect them with either the educational programs they are going to need, or the employers they are going to work for,” she says. “So it is an incredible opportunity for these students to narrow in and really see if this is the field they want to work in.” Everson says plenty of careers are out there for students who don’t want to go to a four-year college that pay well and there is a strong demand for those jobs. She is currently working with nine different students placing them in internships. One student was torn between whether he wanted to go into plumbing or automotive services. He completed a one-day job shadowing with plumber and now is working a paid 100-hour internship at a local auto mechanic business. “They will let him observe what they do, but they will also let him get his hands dirty to really take part in the work,” Everson says. Another student she is working with is interested in careers in the health sciences field but isn’t sure if they want to be a nurse, surgical technician, or radiologist. That student is now interning at Baptist Hospital, where she will be exposed to all kinds of different career options in health care. “They will be able to try out everything from nursing in labor and delivery, to a surgical technician and being in the operating room,” Everson says. “Baptist is great to work with. They give students an amazing array of careers in health sciences to look at.” Angela Fletcher, the career coach at DeSoto Central High School, says career coaches are the conduit from high school to a student’s next step in life. “We start in kindergarten talking about what do you want to be when you grow up. You hear the usual: doctor, lawyer, nurse, teacher.

But we really don’t spend a whole lot of time from then until they graduate saying, ‘Okay, these are the careers you can do. You’re great at chemistry. But what does that look like in a career field,” Fletcher says. “So I talk to them in great depth about different careers. I help them find what they are interested in, their personality types, and what it will take for them to achieve a job in that field.” Auto mechanics, truck driving, and diesel repair are some of the most common interests she sees in the trade fields. On the college side, it’s nursing, law, and surprisingly, the arts. Meeting with a career coach is not mandatory. Students can visit with career coaches whenever it is convenient to them. Fletcher spends much of her efforts targeting 11th-graders and 12th-graders who are going to graduate in December. In a lot of cases, Fletcher says students don’t have a career plan, or if they have a plan, they don’t know how to make it happen. Many tell her that no one has ever asked them what their plans are after they graduate. That’s where she comes in. “If they are going into the workplace, I want to help them with job shadowing and internships,” she says. “If they are going to college, I want to make sure they have sent their application in and that they have applied for scholarships and housing.” She had one young man who told her that his dream was to own a Chick-fil-A restaurant and asked her if she could get him a job there. She contacted the Chick-fil-A location on Getwell Road and was able to get him a paid internship where he will learn everything from the back of the house operations, to marketing and how to open a store. Another young man came to her and said he wanted to be an engineer. When she asked him what type of engineer, he had no idea that there were several different kinds of engineers. Fletcher says she gave him a homework assignment to go and research the engineering field and then let her know what type he was interested in. “He came back and met with me and ended up having the most fantastic internship with Civil-Link,” Fletcher says. “He is getting exposed to every type of engineering out there through Civil Link.” Fletcher believes that having career coaches in schools has been the missing piece that was needed in the state’s educational system. She wishes that she had a career coach back when she was in high school.

“We had one guidance counselor at my school,” she says. “I remember going to see him. He told me the best way to predict what I wanted to do was to take the military ASVAB test. So I took the ASVAB and I said, ‘Well, what about college?’ He said, ‘Well, just find one that fits you.’ I remember sending in all these applications and there was no guidance. It was ‘figure it out yourself.’” With the help of a career coach, she’s able to connect students with a wealth of college and technical education choices and job opportunities in the skilled trade fields that are available to them after high school. She points to her own daughter and son, who both went to Rhodes College in Memphis. Her daughter majored in English and loved college. She is currently a teacher in DeSoto County. Her son absolutely hated college and dropped out in his senior year. At 26 years old, he now owns two demolition companies and makes a six-figure income. “I want to help students find their passion,” Fletcher says. “And for them to be able to charge forward to these career paths is incredible.” Hasselman with DeSoto County Schools says the school district is excited about the work the career coaches are already doing in the schools. It’s evident, she says, that the coaches are deeply committed to the success and well-being of the students, and expect even greater outcomes in the future as more and more students seek out their help to achieve their career dreams. “They work closely with our school counselors and together, the personalized support, mentorship, and practical insights they provide, are instrumental in helping students make informed decisions about their educational and career paths,” she says. “They are opening doors to opportunities that might have otherwise gone unnoticed by our students. Their efforts will help ensure that the district is preparing students for the ever-changing demands of the real world.” ■

Jon Frost moved to DeSoto County from Las Vegas so he and his family could enjoy Southern hospitality. Whether it’s live shows, sports tournaments, or world-class shopping and dining, it’s no surprise to him why more people are discovering all that north Mississippi has to offer visitors. Tell us about DeSoto County Tourism. What do you do? The fun version is to say DeSoto County Tourism serves as the cheerleading arm for the cities and towns across DeSoto County with the goal of promoting the unique attractions and history in our region. We are seeing growth in every corner of the county, from housing to businesses, and we work to inform locals and visitors about places to see, dine and stay, as well as things to do. The DeSoto County Tourism Department is a team of two, Margaret Devine and myself, that work alongside local chambers of commerce, hotels, area attractions, and local tourism associations to make sure we keep a pulse on what’s new locally and in the industry. Our efforts are overseen by the DeSoto County Convention and Visitors Bureau board of directors.
How would you describe DeSoto County as a tourist destination? The number-one reason people should visit North Mississippi is to enjoy the charm of our local communities and historic districts in places like Hernando and Olive Branch. In so many areas of the country, you struggle to find a good sample of preserved history. We have an abundance of that here. What is the best part of your job? The people. I came into this role back in October and the folks I’ve been able to meet have been wonderful. My teammate, Margaret Devine, is amazing and has such a wealth of knowledge for our team and the entire county. When my family and I decided to move here from Las Vegas, I was really looking forward to having some Southern hospitality back in my life. I grew up in Kentucky and South Carolina, so there are certain parts of the Southern lifestyle and the way people treat each other that I missed.
Do you see tourism continuing to grow in DeSoto County? Absolutely. The demand for our hotels and events continues to grow. Four new hotels are currently under construction or coming soon, and we announced a massive expansion at Landers Center in 2023. The 100,000 square-foot convention center is going to be a game-changer. Each year, we turn down dozens of event requests because we simply can’t handle the expected volumes of the acts and events from a space standpoint. With an expanded Landers Center that includes more square footage and parking, plus a full-service hotel, we can expect more acts and events, especially those with high attendance rates. This, in turn, would bring our county even more revenue, events for our residents and jobs to those in our community. And this allows us to compete with other markets, including Biloxi and Jackson here in Mississippi, and Birmingham, Alabama, too. It is definitely an exciting time for DeSoto County. Our community leaders, mayors, and supervisors are driving us forward, and we will continue to look for ways to support those efforts and grow together.

The D eS oto T imes-Tribune is the newspaper of record in DeSoto County. We are the second-oldest newspaper in Mississippi, dating all the way back to 1849 when it started as the Hernando Free Press. It is the only locally-owned, community newspaper in DeSoto County. We publish weekly every Thursday and offer home delivery or delivery by mail to subscribers, and have a website where we post our stories online as well. We cover news in all of DeSoto County, so each week you might find anything from a story about the latest Southaven Board of Aldermen meeting, to the latest business opening in Silo Square, or even original recipes to try out in your kitchen. We try to keep our readers both informed and entertained.
The way people get their news has changed. How has the DeSoto TimesTribune changed with the times? While it is true that print readership overall is down, we still have a growing subscriber base. So our numbers are not down, and we’re actually increasing circulation. More people still turn to their local newspaper to get their local news than any other source. There is still something special about holding a printed copy in your hands and starting your morning off with your hometown newspaper that readers like. You can’t do the crossword puzzle at an online news site. You can’t clip and save or frame a story online like you can do with a newspaper. We try to have a mix of news and original feature stories about people in the community that readers will find both interesting and relevant and can’t find anywhere else. We still provide breaking news and stories that are exclusive to our website on a daily basis for those who like to get their news online. You won’t find all of our stories online, however. We still believe that print has value and save the best for our subscribers.
What do you like best about your job? I love seeing the people who walk into our office looking for a copy of the paper because they were in a story that we published, or a family member of theirs was in the paper, or a neighbor, or maybe their daughter or grandson was featured in a story. I really like the fact that we are a community newspaper and that people turn to us for news. We get a lot of e-mails and phone calls inviting us to come out to community events or news tips and feature story ideas from our readers. We love that and we couldn’t do what we do without our readers. What makes Southaven and DeSoto County a great place to do business? Southaven is such a vibrant city, but it still feels small. It has grown and changed so much over the years, and is still growing. Every time I shop in Southaven, I’m seeing new restaurants and businesses. It’s exciting to see. I love the fact that people shop local and support local businesses.

rom the Snowden District to the West End to the Metro District along Interstate 55, Southaven continues to be in high demand with developers bringing new and exciting projects that are transforming the city into the premier destination to place to “live, work, and play” in north Mississippi. New upscale shopping, dining, and living options are currently underway within walking distance of Silo Square and its beautiful town square. Developers are also starting to take advantage of special tax incentives to renovate existing buildings in the West End that are breathing new life into the city’s original business district. And thanks to a three-way partnership between Southaven, DeSoto County, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the skyline around Interstate-55 is about to be transformed with the city’s first ever fourstar hotel and an expanded and renovated convention center around the Landers Center that will forever change tourism in Southaven. Mayor Darren Musselwhite says with all of this new economic momentum, demand has never been higher in the city’s history. “We’ve continued to build on our past success and make Southaven a place where people want to be to live, do business, and visit,” Musselwhite says. “It’s tremendously rewarding for me, as Mayor, to see private investors share in my vision and priorities for the future of Southaven and make it all reality. It’s a fun time to be in Southaven.” With Silo Square already drawing residents and visitors to its unique mix of shops and upscale dining and more to come, two more developments are currently under construction that are within walking distance and will offer even more upscale housing, shopping, dining and entertainment options to the Snowden District. “Top of the ‘Sip,” located south of Goodman Road on the west side of Snowden Lane, is a 16-acre planned use development by SMJ Enterprise Development that will be a blend of exceptional shopping and retail, destination restaurants, desirable office space, and entertainment space in a warm, casual, and fun atmosphere with beautiful views of open lawns, large plazas, tree-lined sidewalks, and footpaths ideal for concerts, outdoor festivals, farmer markets and other engaging events. community located on the corner of Nail and Getwell Road that will feature wide sidewalks, manicured grounds with three fountains, and access to some of the best shopping in DeSoto County. Each unit features nine foot high ceilings, crown molding, quartz counter tops, walk-in closets, and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. Musselwhite says the Snowden District continues to thrive as Silo Square is “en fuego” and new developments are also becoming a reality on the east side of Getwell and along Nail Road. “The Top of the Sip development will perfectly align with the demand for recreational-type businesses, including a high-profile sports grill,” Musselwhite says. “The Provost is a beautiful development that perfectly fits the vision of creating a walkable, recreational place to live for those who want to be in the middle of the action as it is another mixed-use development with retail and service businesses on the ground floor with upscale, loft-style apartments on the upper floors.” The redevelopment of the West End or “original Southaven,” also remains a key priority for the city. Southaven’s original business district grew up along Stateline Road down to Highway 51, but as the city has grown over past three decades, businesses and population has shifted to the south and east to Goodman Road and the Snowden District. While still home to city government offices, library, and many unique businesses and restaurants, Musselwhite has made revitalizing the old downtown areas one of his top priorities as mayor. The Mayor, along with the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, are making a renewed push to promote potential redevelopment opportunities in the West End and special incentives like property tax abatements and waiving of water, sewer tap, and building fees to help encourage new development of existing buildings. “The government has formalized every economic incentive available and in accordance with state law, as well as set the example by defining this district as the headquarters of governmental operations, investing millions of dollars in the renovation of existing buildings and purchase of other buildings for public purposes,” Musselwhite says. This new effort is already starting to pay dividends. One developer recently submitted plans to invest $1.2 million to turn the former Rite Aid building at the corner of Stateline and Millbranch Road into a neighborhood grocery store using the

West End Incentive Program. The building has been vacant for some time. Another project on the drawing board will breathe new life into a dilapidated building on Stateline Road which was once a Mexican restaurant. Developers plan to invest $500,000 to rehabilitate the building which will soon be home to an American Deli restaurant. Musselwhite says those projects represent another success story in their efforts to pump new life and to encourage other property owners to reinvest in their buildings using the incentives that are available. “ One by one, private businesses are taking advantage of these incentives and developing old buildings for new purposes,” Musselwhite says. “Most recently, American Deli began the renovation of the former El Patron and original Danver’s restaurant building on Main Street. The former Rite Aid building at Main/Millbranch appears to be next on the redevelopment timeline with positive prospects.” Musselwhite’s vision of bringing in a “skyline” changing hotel to Southaven is also becoming a reality in the city’s Metro District. Southaven created the Metro District to help spur development along Interstate-55 and Church Road around the Landers Center and make it a destination for tourists. To make that happen, Southaven is partnering with DeSoto County and the Convention and Visitors Bureau on a project to construct a new 275,000 square-foot convention center adjacent to the Landers Center along with a privately built $65 million, 240 room attached seven-story upscale Embassy Suites by Hilton. Nicknamed “Projec t Sk y ” by Musselwhite, the hotel will be a key component of an overall plan to renovate and expand the Landers Center, the county-owned multi-use facility which currently hosts conventions, Chamber luncheons, concerts, and sporting events. The hotel developer will make use of special tax incentives offered by Southaven on construction projects valued at more than $25 million. Musselwhite says the hotel will bring an asset that has never existed before in Southaven and DeSoto County in terms of hotel quality, and will open up tremendous opportunities for tourism that have never existed before because of space needs. “All of this will achieve my vision of “changing the skyline” as it will be beautiful and highly visible from Interstate-55,” Musselwhite says. “I wanted to see a tall hotel, thus the name “Project Sky.” I truly believe this is the number-one most significant economic development

project in DeSoto County.” The Landers Center opened in 2000 and was originally envisioned as a place to hold graduation ceremonies and other civic events, but quickly became a sought-after destination for big-ticket events. Hundreds of thousands of guests have come through its doors for sporting events, star-studded concerts, family friendly shows, conferences, and other events. The facility currently has a 10,000seat arena, professional ice floor, 400-seat community theater, and a 17,000-squarefoot convention hall, and has made a name for itself in the industry as a go-to venue for event planners. Executive Director Todd Mastry says the Landers Center has been a great multiuse facility and continues to be a soughtafter destination for all kind of events, but the facility is getting older and is limited in the number and kinds of events and trade shows that it can host due to space limitations. Officials at the Landers Center have received continual requests from promoters looking for more convention space, more event space, and more availability to bring events to the facility, which has fueled a need for expansion. “It’s not just recently,” Mastry says. “I started noticing this about ten years ago. That’s when most of this really started. Basically, we are out of inventory and have been for some time. When I say inventory, I mean dates are full a year or a year-and-a-half out. Every Thursday through Sunday dates are completely gone in the convention space. We have some Tuesdays and Wednesdays available, but trade shows typically encompass a couple of days of the week and weekends.” A feasibility study conducted by Convention Sports & Leisure International Inc. told county officials what they already knew, that convention and meeting planners are interested in holding events in DeSoto County - IF there was enough space. The study found that because the Landers Center lacks a true convention hall, it is missing out on the chance to host bigger events like RV and boat shows, bridal shows, cheer competitions, large government related conventions, tennis and basketball tournaments, and other types of events. Currently, the largest space the Landers Center can offer is 17,000 square-feet. The study showed that the Landers Center needs at least 50,000 square-feet of new space to be viable and 5,000 to 15,000 square-feet of breakout meeting space. Gina Wigington Realtor® Mississippi, which has 85,000 square feet of convention space, the casinos on the Gulf shore, or the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi. “They talked to people in the industry and found that they are interested in the Landers Center and like the area,” Mastry says. “They want to come here and are waiting on us to get moving with expanding the facility.” The numbers supporting the economic feasibility of expanding the Landers Center are all positive. The expansion will produce an estimated $35 million in annual spending and about $12 million in direct spending into the local economy, for a total economic benefit to DeSoto County of $45 million a year, and would result in the creation of 662 full time jobs. Adding more convention space will boost the average number of events the facility could host to over 150 in year one, with 525,000 attendees, 212,500 non-local visitors, and 65,742 hotel room nights. “This is really going to move the needle forward when it comes to conventions and tourism and the economic impact with that,” Mastry says. “This is a big domino that is going to fall.” DeSoto Count y Super visor Mark Gardner has a saying that he is fond of repeating: Government that works together, works better. The expansion of the Landers Center and the addition of a four-star hotel on the site is a prime example of government working together to provide something that will be really

nice for DeSoto County. DeSoto County has agreed to issue $38.5 million in bonds toward construction. The Convention and Visitors Bureau will be chipping in an additional $16 million. Construction is estimated to cost around $60 million, with the revenue to service the debt coming from the county’s two percent tourism tax. “And of course the majority of that is paid by out-of-town visitors staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, and buying gas,” Gardner says. “The rest of the money is sitting in the bank. So there is both cash and bond money.” Gardner says County taxpayers aren’t getting into the hotel business. Money to build the hotel will come from the developers. “We’re not putting county money into that,“ Gardner says. “That’s a private investment.” In addition to the new convention space and hotel, there are a whole lot of other good pieces to the project. The expansion will also include a new parking garage, a new performing arts theater which will be used by DeSoto Family Theater and other community groups, and a stand-alone restaurant that will be built on an outparcel next to the Landers Center as well. “This is a great project and we are really excited about it,” Gardner says. “This is going to attract tens of thousands of visitors to DeSoto County every year. Those people will stay in our hotels, they will eat in our restaurants, and they will shop in our stores. And we will be able to host some really nice conventions and trade shows.” For Mayor Musselwhite, the Landers Center expansion and hotel is expected to be the catalyst that will spur even more high-quality development in the “Metro District,” which he

says has enormous future potential of becoming a major draw for tourism and business in general. The hotel and convention center, along with the Tanger Outlet stores just down the road, will be the cornerstones of the district, with the ultimate goal of attracting a corporate headquarters of some type. Construction on the renovation of the Landers Center is expected to get underway this spring and take about 24 months to complete. “The reason we did it is because we want to make this area special,” Musselwhite says. “When I-269 opened in 2018, this further improved the demand of this area geographically and logistically. There were countless discussions before a private hotelier, DeSoto County Supervisors, the DeSoto County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the City of Southaven all came together to combine this Hilton Embassy Suites Hotel with a new convention center all connected to the existing Landers Center. Having all of this in one location will create the only convention center in Mississippi with a hotel on site and create a tourism draw that has never existed here before. This will put us on the map from an economic development standpoint.” ■

Amanda Tongumpun married a big video game nerd. When they’re not battling it out on the race to the finish line in one of the sit-down racing games, she usually whoops Terry good on pinball. He gets his revenge though at basketball. The couple enjoys bringing the video games they grew up on to a new generation. Tell me about your business. We are an arcade bar — mainly an arcade, but we do have a bar attached. It is familyfriendly until 8 p.m. then after that we do 21 and older for the safety of the kids. We host birthday parties here all the time. We even had a wedding and baby shower. So it is also an event center. What made you want to open a video arcade? Our games were originally at a place called Rec Room in Memphis. They shut down when Covid hit and decided to get away from the arcade business. It surprised us because they were constantly busy. So we had all the games and thought, why not do it for ourselves? They did well, so we should do well. We knew that most of
the business came from Mississippi, so instead of renting a building in Memphis, we decided to buy a building in Southaven. Everything retro is cool again. Is that part of the attraction too for this kind of business? We want this newer generation to have the fun that we did when we were kids because it was safe fun. This is a place that parents can come to and not be bored because we have games that they want to play too. We have a lot of people tell us their kids have never been to a true video arcade. So the kids end up having a great time along with the parents. What are some of the arcade games that you have at Game Over? We have over 40 games. We have pinball machines. The popular ones are Guns ’n’ Roses, South Park, The Simpsons, Back to the Future. The Mario Bros. pinball machine that we have became popular when the movie came out, so the kids love that. But we also have driving games like Daytona, Crazy Taxi, and Jumbo Safari where you go around trying to catch animals. And then
Cruis’n USA, of course. But we also have the old-school arcade games like Mario, Ms. Pac Man, Mortal Combat, and Street Fighter. We have a six-player X-Men. And if a game becomes popular and available and we don’t have it, we will get it. We have so many games that we are just trying to see what works and what doesn’t work and we’ll just switch it out for a new one. What is the best part of owning a video arcade? We have a lot of regular customers and they have become like family to us. It’s constantly like going home when you work here. I know exactly who is going to come in on certain days, and I know what to have on the TVs for them or what drink they are going to want. It’s just a nice family, homey feel for me. I don’t feel like I am working. It’s more like I am hanging out with family. What do you like best about being in Southaven? I’m a country girl at heart. I like the homey feel in Southaven where everybody knows each other. We know our customer’s names and they make us feel like family. I love that.

While Baptist continues to expand and improve those services on its sprawling campus in the heart of the city — the most recent being the addition of a $55 million, 80,000-square-foot physicians of fice in 2022 — Southaven is also home to a number of specialty health care-related clinics which means residents don’t have to leave the city to seek the services they need. Sometimes it may be a missing document that triggers a question. Sometimes it is a mistake by the tax authority. What do you like best about doing business in Southaven? Southaven to me is the best of both worlds. We still are able to draw clients from Memphis and other parts of the county, but Southaven is the center of that area. We see the growth and the dynamic economy that Southaven has enjoyed over the years, but it still has that small-town feel. I go to lunch
and I will see a client in a restaurant that I am on a first name-basis with. You don’t get that just anywhere. We still have a personal connection with our local residents and client base. That’s important to us. What is the best part of your job? I don’t always like the hours, but I love the work. It’s a field that burns out a lot of employees and businesses. I get to see a variety of industries through my client base, whether that is construction, distribution, real estate, retail, or food services. I get to learn about all of these different types of businesses, learn about the people, and discover what drives them. That is what I enjoy most. I’m still learning, and I like that aspect about it, and I am learning from my clients. They come to me for advice, but I am learning from them as well. That mutual sharing is something I really enjoy.

Hollywood on t he Mississippi The film industry is young, but opportunities abound in Southaven.
On the set of Robb Smith’s Truth Lies Upstream

S
outhaven is a long way away from the major movie and television studios in Hollywood and New York City — 1,812.8 miles from Hollywood, to be exact, and 1,102.5 miles from the Big Apple, where most of the entertainment industry work is done. But inside the walls of Southpoint Church on Stateline Road in the city’s original business district, there is movie magic being made there by talent right here in DeSoto County almost every day of the week that could stack up against the best movies and television shows currently playing in the cinemas. Award-winning director and filmmaker Robb Smith, known professionally as Robb Rokk, founded DeSoto Arts Institute in 2016 as an outlet to provide support, mentoring, and training to youth and young adults looking to learn the film industry with an emphasis on producing family friendly content. Students receive hands-on training and experience in every aspect of film production from story conception to screenwriting, to acting, directing, sound, music, visual effects, all the way to the post-production and editing process — all done using professional equipment.
No matter where their interests in filmmaking lie, Smith says there is a role for them on every DAI film project. “We walk them through the whole process,” he says. “All of that. As a writer and director, I have the canvas and a paint brush. I hand them the paint brush and they have unlimited opportunity to do the most beautiful strokes on the canvas.” Smith grew up in Memphis and was a movie buf f from an early age. He was enthralled with movies like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and American Graffiti. His father had a Super 8 movie camera and captured home movie images of the family on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River on the sand bar driving their dune buggies. While he wasn’t allowed to touch the camera, Smith says he began paying more attention to how movies were made. “I would drive my dad crazy,” he says. “We would watch the ABC Monday Night Movie. My dad would get so annoyed with me because I would say things like, ‘Hey, he just lit that cigarette and it was in his right hand. Now it’s in his left hand.’ He would be like, ‘Boy, how did you see that?” I didn’t understand the behind the scenes, but I knew what I was seeing.” Ironically, Smith never attended film school himself. He was working in web design when one day a friend at church approached him about making a music video. “He said to me, ‘I hear you are creative. Do you want to make a music video with me in Nashville?’” Smith says. “I was like, sure.” The production was a three-minute video for the song “Crank the Hank” that featured a barnyard, line dancers, motorcyclists, and four-by-four trucks out muddin’. Using a borrowed boom from church — or what’s known as a “gib” in movie production lingo — they set up in a barn in Gallatin, Tennessee, and shot from 8 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. the next day. “It was cool. I really liked the process,” Smith says. “But what I enjoyed the most was the storytelling aspect.” Word got around in Nashville following that shoot and the success of the video, and Smith went on to make more music videos with smaller bands. He was also invited to teach a music video production course at Nashville Film Institute. Smith found himself out of work when his IT job at an architectural firm was outsourced. He went away to a week-long summer camp for kids in Texas, which gave him time to ponder what his next step would be. Smith says he felt that God was telling him not to worry, that he would take care of him. He had barely finished

But in DeSoto County, we are definitely more community driven. I know it sounds hokey, but we really are. We like to use local lenders. We like to use local appraisers. So with the real estate market in Southaven, I think that is a real win-win and why so many people want to live in Southaven. You could sell real estate anywhere in the United States. What is so special about working in Southaven? The “super power” of Southaven is that it is very embracing and very welcoming. You feel like you have a place here and
that means a lot, especially with all of the growth and people moving to DeSoto County. I’m not talking about just an influx of people from other parts of Mississippi, or Arkansas, or Tennessee. I’m talking about California, New York, and Florida, because it is so welcoming and embracing and you can make it your home. For some people, they were raised here and are moving back. Others are moving here because they want a slower pace of life. Even though home prices have gone up, it is still a very affordable place to live and we create home ownership for people who never thought they could buy. That home ownership dream that everybody talks about is alive and well in Southaven. What is the best part of your job? I love being able to sign a contract and then hand the keys over and say, “Congratulations, you’re now a homeowner.” The best part for me is being able to help somebody do something they thought they never could do in owning a home. That part never gets old.

showering on the Monday after getting back from camp, when he sat down at his computer and the phone rang. It was a client with an offer to do a web site design. “That day, they wrote me a check for the full job,” Smith says. “That was almost a month’s salary. Then, before I even finished that, I got another one. I saw the handwriting on the wall, so I kept designing websites.” Work offers then came his way to run sound on some short films and projects for HGTV and ESPN. Smith says working on those projects was like a crash course in directing and producing. He watched every thing that was going on, from the cameras they were using to the equipment used to set up the shots to the lighting and the sound. “I was starting to learn the lingo, things as simple as the gib or the boom and the crew positions and watching what they do,” Smith says. “When I was running sound, I could hear the actors talking. I could hear the director whispering to them, telling them okay, in this shot I want you to walk up to that actor and do this.” Then at night, Smith says he would go home and read books and manuals about film production and watch tutorials on line. He began playing around with graphics and video editing using Adobe Creative Suite. “I already owned my own camera,” he says. “I would put dots on my arm and film my arm. Then I would go in and use Photoshop and make them look like a cut wound. So I started learning more things.” A friend who was working as the VFX editor on HBO’s True Detective Series and other projects like The Outsiders invited him numerous times to come out and visit him in Los Angeles and New York to ride around on the camera car for background shots around the time he was unemployed and trying to figure out his next step. Smith says he always turned him down because he didn’t want to live in LA or New York. He finally did visit him in Atlanta though around 2015 where they were filming A Walk in the Woods with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. “We spent the day inside the building on the set watching Robert Redford and Nick Nolte,” Smith says. “That was pretty cool. I got to see things on a much bigger scale than I had been messing with. But I was like, ‘I can do this.’ I know I am a story teller. I come from a long line of them. So I’ve got that.” Smith filmed his first short film in 2015 using his own video production company, Rockwell Video Productions, called And Thus It Ends, a story about a kid who

is walking home in what looks like an apocalyptic world. “He’s going through his monologue about zombies and things like that,” he says. “He’s imagining this on his way home. And then his friend jumps out and scares him. It turned out kinda neat.” But it was his church work with Colonial Hills that Smith says led him to find his true calling — teaching film to students. Smith has been heavily involved at Colonial Hills Church for over 30 years serving in roles as a worship leader, youth pastor, and mentoring kids in the worship band. He says working with the youth made him want to stay connected to young people. He thought he could best accomplish that through film. “I thought, I will just start teaching what I learned in film,” he says. “I really think God called me to do this.” He asked Colonial Hills if he could have a room one night a week. “A couple of nights we had 45 or 50 people show up sitting in big circles,” he says. “It was very basic because I didn’t know a ton at the time.” Smith began looking for a bigger space, one that he could afford to expand his little film club that would have room for a studio and a classroom where students could shoot and edit their projects. His prayers were answered when he got a call from SouthPoint Church, who knew about his work, asking if he was looking for studio space. He couldn’t afford the $1,800 a month asking price of most of the places he had looked at on Getwel Road around the airport. Those were too noisy anyway because of all the air traffic. Smith said he told himself that if they came close to his price range, he would take it. “I walked in here and looked around and was like, I can turn this into anything I want,” Smith says. “I had a number in my head, and I thought, if they say within $50 of this figure, I’ll take it. They were $25 inside my number.” Smith’s little “Film Club,” as he called it, started with about 40 students in 2016. For some, it was a hang-out space. For others, it was a place to learn how to make films. Students could pursue whatever role that interested them from acting to directing to working behind the camera or on other equally important jobs like lighting and sound. “The list just goes on and on,” he says. “I’m a jack of all trades, a master of none. I know a little bit about every job.” The students at DAI soon began turning out award-winning work. Their film On Edge, a story about a man standing on the ledge of a building contemplating suicide, made it into the Top 10 at the Memphis Film Prize. The next year, their film The Game, about sex trafficking, almost landed the top prize. “We were told we missed winning the Memphis Film Prize by single digits in the judge’s voting,” Smith says. Another aspiring filmmaker, Jessiah Burnett, heard about the work being done at DAI and joined the team as program director in 2016. Burnett had been making videos for about five years, but

mostly the kind you find on YouTube. He heard about DAI through Facebook right after they made On Edge. “I was looking for something to kind of get into the actual film industry, some type of job training program,” Burnett says. “I went with two of my friends to check it out and see what it was. I just never left.” Burnett has directed a few of his own short film features, X Number of Words and more recently, Magnetic, but his talents lie more on the logistical side, scheduling, casting, and organizing the shoot. Two more award-winning short films — Outside Arcadia and Truth Lies Upstream — told Smith and Burnett what they already knew — that there is indeed talent right here in Southaven and North Mississippi to make movies that rival those being produced at top film schools like Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and NYU. “We have a lot of young people around here wanting to get into film,” Burnett says. “A lot of people who come to us don’t understand that they can make videos at a high professional level. That’s why we started this, to show them that they can actually make highquality films right here and learn the basics of filmmaking. There are other groups out there in Memphis doing this kind of work, but they are not like us in that we help them get out there and make their own films and are equipping them with all of the skills they need to serve on a real film set. There is really nothing like this in the whole Memphis and North Mississippi area.” Smith created the DeSoto Film Festival, which is now in its third year, to showcase the films of DAI students and to expose audiences in North Mississippi to the work being made here in their own community, as well as other cinematic short film gems featuring some of the best filmmaking and story-telling from around the world in a family-friendly setting. At the end of this year’s festival, Smith handed out certificates to the 30 graduates of their new Film School 101. Burnett says he has no doubt that there are young aspiring Steven Spielbergs, George Lucases, and Sofia Coppolas right here in DeSoto County and right there on that stage. “Definitely,” Burnett says. “But also a lot of what we are trying to do is create an ecosystem here where we want them to build projects here and film them here in Mississippi. Smith and Burnett plan to continue to expand the program and are always on the lookout for donors willing to sponsor a student in the program. DAI was recently notified that they received a $110,000 grant from the Mississippi Art Commission. The money will be used to expand their film studio, add more classrooms, and to construct a new 3,000-square-foot stage. Smith says there is a ton of talent in the area and he hopes that someday directors and producers in Hollywood will seek out their graduates. “We get calls from directors looking for people to work on shoots all the time,” Smith says. “When our students are out there looking for jobs in the film industry, I want directors to say ‘You went to DAI?” and they will know that our students have the skills to do the job. I own the camera. I own the lights. We do VFX. We have the skills and do all these things. If we had more money just to cover some expenses, there is nothing stopping us.” But aside from the training, for Smith, DAI still remains a ministry. He is using film as way to build relationships with young people and to instill ethics and respect for each other so that they stay true to their Christian faith. “Everything we do here we view it as a ministry,” Smith says. “The word ministry doesn’t fly in a secular environment today. You start freaking people out. But here, it’s about relationships. It’s about respect. We talk here all the time about building relationships and communicating honesty and integrity and ethics and just shooting straight with one another. We help people help each other. I am encouraging them to make a difference in the world.” ■

Meggie Liu is originally from Fujin, China. She got her start not at a Japanese fusion restaurant, but in a small Chinese buffet in Arkansas. Liu started working for Saki Endless Sushi and Hibachi when it opened in 2019 and purchased the business in the summer of 2023. How did you choose your career path? In the beginning, I really wanted to go to college but I couldn’t. I just have a high school diploma. I worked in a Chinese restaurant for three years and then went to a sushi place in Philadelphia, Maryland, and now in Mississippi. Sushi is what made me want to go work in a Chinese restaurant. It’s a little different for me. Every restaurant has a different menu, so you have to learn how to remember to make all the different sushi rolls and all of the instructions. I know how to make at
least 60 or 70 different rolls. I know how to make sushi, but I don’t cook. What is it about Southaven that you like the best? I love the people in Southaven. Everyone is so polite and respectful. The people here are just so nice. I could have gone to Memphis, but Southaven is just a very good place to live. Hibachi and sushi restaurants have become really popular. What do you think sets Saki Endless Sushi and Hibachi apart from the others? We try to keep our menu fresh. We offer things that people here want to eat when they go out for hibachi and sushi and will keep them coming back to us. We can make a lot of dishes as long as you tell us what you want, what’s in it, and if we have
the ingredients. We can make what you want. We don’t do hibachi tables and a table show, but we do have all-you-can-eat hibachi. We also have traditional Chinese dishes so that if a customer walks in and they don’t like sushi or hibachi, we have other dishes that they can choose from. What is the most fun about owning your own restaurant? It’s been a part of my life for the last four or five years. My kids have grown up here in Southaven. I like to say that my customers are like my kids. They are like family to me. That’s why I love to stay here. I have really gotten to know my customers. I love that we are a small family business and can take care of all of our tables personally and a lot of our customers know us and I know them. I feel so great that we have so many regular customers.

Deborah Verucchi grew up in Southaven and has been a Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years. After working in OB/GYN practices in Nashville, Franklin and Germantown, TN, Deborah decided to return home and open her own clinic in Southaven, MS. She is passionate about women’s health and has spent her career caring for women in all stages of life. The Women’s Clinic at the Grove opened in 2018 and is a growing women’s health center. The mission of the clinic is to empower women to live and be their best, by taking charge of their health and wellbeing. Women thrive when they feel good and radiate confidence. What type of services does The Women’s Clinic at the Grove provide? Our clinic provides routine annual women’s health visits, contraception, care of gynecological problems, menopause, hormone replacement therapy and aesthetics. We assure that women are taking care of themselves so they can live a healthy and fulfilling life. The main thing that I provide to each and every one of my patients, is to listen and to show compassion. Women need someone to listen and care about their concerns. Too often, medical care is focused on sickness, disease, medication and less about feeling good, happy, and being healthy. Our clinic is warm, welcoming and inviting. We want women to look forward to coming to see us, and most of them do. I have
been blessed to have an amazing group of women working in my clinic and receive compliments every day about them. I have managed menopausal symptoms for over 15 years and am often called a “hormone specialist”. Hormones affect everything in our bodies and when we start losing or having changes in these hormones, symptoms can be quite severe. Some women do fine and can manage their symptoms alone. However, many women have multiple, bothersome symptoms that need to be addressed. These symptoms can affect the quality of a woman’s life. We work closely with our patients by providing hormone evaluations and consultations to determine if or when treatments should be considered. We offer nonhormonal options, traditional hormone replacement, bioidentical hormones and hormone pellet therapy. Every woman is different and needs an individualized plan of care to control symptoms. Why did you start doing aesthetics and what type of services does your clinic provide? I incorporated aesthetics in my practice over 3 years ago because I was listening to women and heard what they were saying. They may be feeling better, but they were not always happy with what they saw in the mirror. I am happy to be able to help women on the inside and now also on the outside to allow them to feel the best
they can feel. We provide facial and skin assessments, cosmetic injections (botox, filler), facial treatments including: collagen PIN microneedling, Morpheus face and body treatments, vaginal rejuvenation with Forma V radiofrequency treatments, and VTone bladder training sessions for overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. Most recently our clinic has expanded next door: Viva Medical Aesthetics and Hormones is now open. We plan to have an open house this Spring. We offer ALL THE THINGS that women want. We want to be that one-stop-shop for women’s health and aesthetic needs. We now have a full-time, experienced aesthetician who provides organic waxing, facials, brow/ lash treatments and more. We have added Aquafirm facials and hair replacement treatments, including therapies with EXOSOMES, plant based stem cells. We are cutting edge in both hormones and aesthetics and look forward to offering even more. What do you like most about Southaven? I am proud to be from Southaven. It certainly did grow while I was away for over 10 years, and continues to do so every year. However, it continues to be a “small town” atmosphere with friendly people and Christian values. I believe in supporting small businesses. They are the backbone of our country. It is nice to live in an area that feels like home.
