Community leaders are drawing future plans.

The City of Southaven operates under the leadership of Mayor Musselwhite and seven aldermen; six elected by ward, or district, and one elected city-wide or at-large. In accordance with Mississippi Election Code, Southaven holds municipal elections every four years with the next election cycle to be held in 2021.

Southaven is a full service city providing many public services including police and fire protection, EMS/ambulatory services, code enforcement, sanitation collection, household recycling, planning and zoning services, parks and recreational services, and other cost-effective services. Southaven maintains low property taxes while dedicating nearly 63% of its budget to public safety. Although a city of over 53,000, Southaven retains a lean municipal workforce of 437 full-time employees with the majority of our employees being dedicated police and fire officers and staff.

Southaven’s government is forward thinking and has implemented many innovative policies including utilizing the parks and recreation system as an economic development tool. Southaven has long been recognized as a regional leader in economic and community development. The future remains bright for continued growth and prosperity. In 2019, the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, the most powerful network in DeSoto County, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. While the Chamber marks 1969 as its official birth year, its foundation was laid years earlier as businessmen and supportive citizens from around the area had a vision of a thriving community in the heart of cotton fields and dairy farms. A milestone of 50 years working with area businesses shows that the Chamber is a vital part of the ongoing growth that is taking place in Southaven.

Millennials are connected to their world like never before. They crave authenticity and they just want to have fun.

Lauren Norton, Ben Beam, and Matthew Kelso are among the millennials who find Southaven provides what they desire in a lifestyle. They are all of the age that defines them as millennials, reaching adulthood in the early 21st century. You’ll find them all confident, selfexpressive, upbeat, and receptive to new ideas and ways of living.

They also desire to invest back into their community and world by giving to others.

Norton, with Ultimate Gifts, has been a part of Southaven for nearly her entire life.

“My parents moved here from Memphis when I was younger,” says Norton. “Southaven is a fast-growing place and a really neat area to be in.” Norton’s connection to Southaven also has deeper roots, in that her grandfather, Edgar McKenzie, was the first board president of the Southaven Chamber in 1969.

“He was a banker and he moved here from one of the Memphis branches,” Norton notes. “He was very involved in the community and it was something he was very passionate about.”

Millennials want to find ways to connect and give back to their community.

Matthew Kelso, known primarily as “Kelso,” is a financial advisor with Edward Jones and he believes in investing his time in people and being an active member of the community.

“We want to succeed and achieve great things. But really it’s about the little things we do for others. We want to know that we make a difference and that this world would not be the same without us, even if we only impact one person,” Kelso says.

Ben Beam’s work as a graphic designer for Fund the Nations and 52 Threads, a Southaven company that helps raise funds for missions and fund-raising projects through T-shirts, helps him give back and make a difference.

Beam came with his parents to Southaven by way of Russia, where his father was a missionary, until Ben turned age 13.

“We love Southaven, we care about Southaven, and Colonial Hills-Southaven (his church) is doing very intentional forays into the community, and we’re kind of a part of that,” Beam says.

When millennials just want to have some fun, they are finding Southaven has all they are

seeking in order to do just that.

Kelso enjoys spending time with his wife, Lauren, eating at local restaurants, attending Memphis Hustle and Grizzlies games and singing on the praise team at Trinity Baptist Church in Southaven.

Norton can often be seen at one of the popular concerts at BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove, where top names in musical entertainment come to perform at the outdoor venue.

Beam can be found on another stage, working with theater groups like DeSoto Family Theatre. He calls the connections and friendships he’s made through community theater “life changing.”

The future of Southaven lies in its millennials, a fact Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite is well aware of.

“This age group includes young adults that are our future leaders, having influence on economic demand in the future,” says Musselwhite. “They want to see more options with housing, pedestrian-friendly communities, recreational options, and careers.”

Tell us about your business.

Athletic House sells high-quality sports apparel and equipment to the North Mississippi market. In addition to our retail location, we customize team uniforms for club, travel, church, and college sports as well as fanwear.

Tell us about your team.

Athletic House has a team of five handling retail, logistics, and uniform sales. I handle the external sales channel while Angie Hubbard manages the retail side of the house. Between Angie and me, we have over 57 years’ experience in the Southaven sporting goods scene and set the standard for service in the local athletic supply market.

How did you get into this line of work?

I started working for Smith & Brumley Athletic House after graduating from Arkansas State in 1983. Back then, I was the only sales rep and drove around

the Mid-South visiting schools drumming up team uniform customers. Eventually, I bought the business from Mr. Smith when he retired but kept the same level of service. Over the years, we’ve seen the school business move from smaller local providers to large national chains and back again as customers realize the value of having the entire Athletic House team living and working in the same community— not just a sales rep who visits once a year.

What are the benef its of doing business in Southaven?

Southaven is a great place to run a business. Once customers know that you are serious about what you do and will stand by them both before and after a sale, they are loyal and friendly.

I can’t imagine any place else where an honest day’s work and a friendly smile can give you so much job satisfaction.

What advice would you give to business owners considering a move to Southaven?

Get involved in the community.

Sporting goods is very much a colloquial business since everyone either plays, has a son/ daughter playing, or knows someone who plays a team sport.

Southaven is a growing area with good weather, a forwardthinking municipal government, a supportive Chamber of Commerce that works for your business, and friendly folks.

What’s something interesting people should know about your business?

We are the longest serving sporting goods business in Southaven having started in 1977. There have been a lot of changes over the years but one thing has remained constant—the need for professional and friendly service. That’s what we pride ourselves on and what has kept us in business this long.

Hope for the Future

A vital part of raising happy, successful children in today’s world can be as simple as providing hope: the hope that they can be all they want to be — and giving them the tools to achieve.

Seeing the need to offer that hope, the people behind Hope Center have organized to improve the culture of DeSoto County. The Hope Center does that by providing safe, fun, and exciting activities and events for the youth and adults of Southaven and all of DeSoto County.

“Our mission is to provide a safe, supervised after school, summer enrichment and youth mentorship program that will address the educational, emotional, and physical wellbeing of students in our community and surrounding areas,” says Hope Center cofounder Stacy Dodd. “Our county and the surrounding area will be positively impacted through this project. It will provide tutoring,

homework assistance, character development, and social growth to help the students succeed in school and in life.”

The Hope Center has undertaken several activities since its founding that reach out to all youngsters. For instance, the Center has become an official affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies Youth Mentorship Program. Part of the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation, the program is dedicated to using sports to transform lives, in this case, done through youth mentoring. The goal is to get every student ready for success in college, career, and life.

The NBA G League’s Memphis Hustle, which plays home games at Southaven’s Landers Center, have also started to partner with the Hope Center as a “special project” program. One program underway through the Hope Center is called RISE, for Redeem, Inspire, Succeed, Educate.

Meeting each Saturday at Southaven Middle School, RISE features mentorship, music, activities, free food, and guest

speakers. Families First for Mississippi Resource Center has joined the Hope Center in this valuable program.

“They’re finding hope,” says co-founder Kenneth McKinney, principal of Hope Sullivan Elementary School and a pastor in suburban Memphis. “They’re finding people that they can confide in and mentor. They’re finding they are safe; they can come and learn and state their opinions, and not be judged for those opinions.”

Another program of the Hope Center is led by Tim Flesner, a John Maxwell Team certified trainer. He leads the YOUTHmax program to equip youngsters with leadership skills.

A Special Kind of Square One Saturday morning, developer Brian Hill sat at his kitchen table with some paper and pencil in hand.

The weekend to-do list was not what was being sketched out that morning. Instead, Hill was drawing his dream for a town square and mixed-use development that is to be Silo Square, set between Tchulahoma and Getwell roads and located in the heart of DeSoto County, across the street from Snowden Grove Park and the BankPlus Amphitheater.

“Eight hours later, I completed the master plan for Silo Square,” Hill says. “I taped four pieces of drafting paper together and drew all of the master plan to a 20-foot scale.”

Silo Square is to be a development like none other. Imagine retail shops, a bank, hotels, loft apartments, eating establishments, offices, and a farmers’ market area around a bell tower and the iconic silo.

The architecture will help take visitors and residents back 100 years, to a time when the town square was the heart of a community.

“This is as close as a replica to a 100-year-old building that you will ever be able to get to,” Hill says. “It was my desire

and my goal to create a building that I could pick up and move to downtown Memphis, Oxford, or Collierville and it would fit right in. I think we’ve achieved that. It’s really going to be special.”

Added to that will be more than 300 single-family residential lots and several common-space areas to make Silo Square its own special community.

It was something Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite wanted to see happen for his city.

“Brian and I shared the same vision for a walkable area with entertainment options,” Musselwhite says. “I actually spoke about this publicly for the Getwell/Nail Road area. So, when he first showed me his plans, I said, ‘Perfect.’”

But, Silo Square almost never happened.

Hill says he had been negotiating for a portion of the land owned by the Snowden family, believing the Snowdens had a master plan for the rest of the property. However, Bayard

Snowden told Hill the family was about to abandon their plans.

“I pushed my chair back from the table and said, ‘Bayard, if you’re going to abandon the master plan, then I’m out,’” Hill says. “I don’t want to be part of something that I don’t know what’s going to happen with the property around me.”

Hill said he would be interested in buying more of the land so he could be sure of about what would happen in the area, and Snowden said, “Make me an offer.” Hill did, still not sure

Goal Youngsters looking for fun in Southaven have really been “kickin’ it” lately. More of them are embracing the growing excitement of the world’s sport, and the city is happy to oblige.

Southaven is well known for its strong youth sports programs, in particular, the baseball programs that continue to attract players of all ages. The Dizzy Dean World Series attracts young baseball and softball players and parents from all over the Southern region each summer.

You’ll find more youngsters wanting to play the game that’s always been popular globally, but now is catching on even more across America. Call it soccer, fútbol, or football, as they do elsewhere, but today’s youth want to take to the “pitch,” as the field is called, and put their foot into the sport’s excitement.

Parks and Recreation Department Director Wes Brown says soccer is a game that today’s kids want to play.

“Soccer is the second-fastest-growing sport in America, behind lacrosse,” Brown says. “Recreational soccer and tournament soccer are positive economic impact factors.”

In response to the increasing demand to play the game, Southaven has embarked on adding facilities to meet that demand.

“We will have seven new fields with a concession stand and seating that overlooks a pond,” Brown says. “We will be playing soccer at Snowden in the spring of 2020.”

According to Brown, there are 1,100 youngsters playing baseball in Southaven programs. But, add the 650 playing outdoor soccer outdoor and the 750 who are playing indoors, that equals as many as 1,400 kids now putting their feet to a soccer ball.

Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite is a product of Southaven’s youth sports program. He went on to become a standout pitcher at Ole Miss, and was later drafted and played in the minor league systems of San Francisco and Minnesota. He stresses that youth sports for a city is more than homeruns and scoring goals.

“Improving recreational opportunities makes your city more economically attractive, as many people want to live in a city that has these options for their families,” Musselwhite says.

Ray said she and others involved in the program experienced it firsthand before adding it at Baptist-DeSoto and they clearly saw the results.

“We went to the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami and they put us through the entire program like we were a patient,” says Ray. “At the end of the week we had decreased our cholesterol and we lost weight, so it was easy to buy into the program that really worked.”

Being involved in cardiac rehabilitation is personal to Ray. “The reason I feel really close to this is that my mother has had stents before and heart disease is in my mother’s family,” she says. “I feel like it
