Indoors or outdoors, Memphis has a ton of entertainment and educational options to keep the kids busy when school’s out. Pack a picnic and check out a free concert on the lawn at the Levitt Shell. Stargaze — inside! — at the AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium. Soak up some sun at Shelby Farms Park — and bring the dog along! Get crafty at one of many hands-on arts classes in the area. For our annual Family Survival Guide, we outline all-things-Memphis and need-to-know info, from health & safety resources to arts venues & happenings, local attractions, youth sports, and more. When do you need to register your child for baseball or soccer? We can help with that. See page 26 for our sports & rec guide. Where can you take the family for a weekend excursion for putt-putt, bowling, or museum exploration? Check out our attractions guide beginning on page 16. Getting ready for a new addition to the family and want to take childbirth classes — or perhaps need the assistance of parenting center professionals or support groups? Take a look at our health & safety guide, starting on page 10. From concerts and art exhibits to educational adventures and movie nights, our annual calendar lays out summer fun activities and events coming up throughout the year, so you can get your planning done early. Speaking of planning, our extensive education guide presents a list of local schools, and info on each, to help with choosing your child’s next move. With a plethora of independent, charter, optional schools, and more, you’ll have everything you need to make the best decision for your child’s education. We hope you find this guide helpful! And we hope, also, that you and your family enjoy every bit of sunshine, warmth, and bonding time that comes with summer break.

Searching for the right education environment for your child Edited by MEMPHIS PARENT STAFF The search for the right school for your child is a monumental task, whether you’re just getting started with preschool or transitioning from elementary to middle and high school. Fortunately, options abound in the greater Memphis area. Memphis Parent has outlined a list of schools and background information on types of school environments to jumpstart your effort. PRIVATE SCHOOLS Private schools are not funded by the state and must fund operations by charging tuition, though many private schools offer some form of financial aid. Schools are typically run by an independent body (a school board, the Catholic Diocese, etc.), and as they are exempt from state oversight and mandated testing, faculty have the freedom to choose their own standards and educational approach. While the majority of private schools in Memphis have a religious affiliation, there are a number of non-religious schools focusing on a wide variety of methodologies and approaches. The Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) and the Catholic Diocese of Memphis represent a large number of private schools in Memphis. MUNICIPALITY SCHOOL SYSTEMS A number of communities in Shelby County manage their own school systems. Residents who live in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, or Millington, can opt to attend one of these schools. Go to the town websites for further information. SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS scsk12.org • 416-5300 Shelby County Schools (SCS) is the largest public school system in Tennessee and among the 25 largest systems in the nation. SCS operates more than 200 schools in the city of Memphis and in unincorporated and reserve areas of Shelby County. The district includes traditional, optional, iZone, and charter schools under their umbrella. Traditional are the zoned schools any student can attend according to home residence. Optional are similar to magnet schools in other cities and have varying academic achievement requirements. iZone are schools on the state’s priority list working to improve test scores. Charter schools are tuition-free and operate independently from the SCS district. All of these schools are listed at the SCS website. You can start your research in this article and visit scsk12.org for more detailed information about each school. SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS OPTIONAL PROGRAMS 160 S. Hollywood, Room C106, 38112 • 416-5338 • scsop@scsk12.org Optional schools offer a world of choices to students.
