It’s early Tuesday, and the rising sun, having begun its annual journey back to the equator, illuminates the south side of Clayborn Temple on Hernando Street. Two painters — black men dressed in white — walk across the gravel lot, breakfast biscuits and coffee in hand, prepping themselves for another day of restoring one of Memphis’ most iconic places.

The thin morning light falls on the west tower, looming six stories high. It serves as an architectural backdrop for a magnificent, arched, stained-glass window.

Squint a bit and move in close, and you could be in France, next to an ancient cathedral.

The illusion lasts only until you back away and turn your eyes to the east end of the building, where plywood boards, painted over in stained-glass patterns, cover the windows. That’s probably symbolic in one fashion or another, a metaphor for something. It’s clear more work needs to be done, here and elsewhere. On this gorgeous morning, I’ll leave it at that.

It was in this building and on this dusty parking lot — formerly in a city neighborhood, now in the massive shadow of FedExForm — where Memphis’ sanitation workers gathered and rallied and began their marches for justice in the winter of 1968. It was from Clayborn Temple, that the workers and their supporters, carrying signs reading “I Am A Man,” set off to change the city’s policies toward its black service workers and citizens.

But they didn’t just change Memphis; they changed the arc of American history. The sanitation workers’ strike and subsequent marches in the streets of downtown Memphis were a pivotal moment in the civil rights struggle of the 1960s, a bold step toward equality and social justice that drew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to our city — and ultimately — to his assassination at the nearby Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968.

So yes, there’s a lot of history at Clayborn Temple — history that should be recognized and honored and memorialized. And that’s finally about to happen.

Just last week, the building was recognized by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark. And on Monday of this week, the city revealed a proposed plan — conceived with the help of the UrbanArt Commission — that will transform the temple parking lot into I Am A Man plaza.

Fifteen-foot-high, deeply three-dimensional steel letters will form the words “I Am A Man” in monumental fashion. Large stone walls featuring quotations and other writings inspired by the civil rights movement will gently funnel visitors into the space. The artist’s renderings of the project, released this week, are impressive.

To give you some idea of what to expect when this happens, consider all the extra-weird mistakes that have been showing up in The Commercial Appeal lately. It almost seems like the whole newspaper is being assembled and edited somewhere other than Memphis — because it is! It’s edited at the Nashville Design Studio.

Or, should I say it was? Last week, Gannett announced plans to shutter the Nashville studio consolidating all editing and design work at the company’s remaining hubs in Des Moines, IA; Louisville, KY; and Phoenix, AZ.

I N FO WAR S AdAge is now reporting conservative media concerns regarding an impending FCC ruling that would allow the Sinclair Broadcast Group to buy Tribune Media. The deal would bring Sinclair’s total holdings to 233 local TV-news stations, including Memphis’ top-rated station, WREG. Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy asked the FCC to delay its decision saying, “I think it needs more vetting.” Both Newsmax and Sinclair admit conservative bias.

Edge, Overton Bark, & Snakes Edge gets $70M project, park barks back after storms, rare snakes at the zoo.

E D G E TA P P E D FO R H U G E D EVE LO P M E NT Development Services Group (DSG) announced its plans last week to invest more than $70 million to transform historic properties in the Edge District, including the former Wonder Bread bakery, into residential, office, and retail spaces.

The plan includes reuse of 150,000 square feet of existing structures, as well as construction of new buildings from the ground up.

Some specifics of the redevelopment include a $55 million transformation of eastern portions of the former Wonder Bread bakery into class-A apartments and a 480-space parking garage.

The western portion of the old bakery would be converted into 75,000 square feet of office and retail space. That $9.5 million project could be the future headquarters for a 120-employee financial services firm.

About 50,000 additional square feet of office space will be developed at two separate locations on Madison and Monroe, totaling near $4.5 million for both projects.

Lastly, $3 million will be invested to renovate a 27,000-square-foot spot on Monroe known as the “Cycle Shop” to house City & State’s second location, as well as office spaces for the Memphis Medical District Collaborative.

A second phase of redevelopment includes transforming an abandoned rail spur located under Monroe into a public green space, as well as converting four other properties on Monroe, Marshall, and Union into mixed-use spaces.

Pending approval, the first phase of construction on the western portion of Wonder Bread and the Cycle Shop will begin in September.

U N I O N AS KS FO R I N C R EAS E Memphis Fire Fighters Association (MFFA) president Thomas Malone sent a letter last week to the Memphis

City Council Chairman Berlin Boyd asking that the council change an ordinance that limits pension amounts for retirees.

The last cost-of-living benefit raise that the retirees received was in 2012, Malone says, and was only one-half of one percent. While city officials say they can’t afford an increase, the union is asking for a 2 percent increase, or $3.2 million per year.

OVE RTO N BAR K I S BAC K Overton Bark dog park reopened last Thursday after a Memorial Day weekend storm left an 80-year-old oak tree on its side there.

City’s Public Works crews, along with a team from Memphis Dream Center, were able to clear the park of the large limbs left by the oak and fill the spot it left.

Officials say the total cleanup cost for the single tree was around $7,000.

ZOO LIVESTREAMING SNAKE BIRTHS As of press time, three baby pine snakes had not yet emerged from their eggs at the Memphis Zoo. A webcam is set to broadcast it live.

The zoo is one of four conservation centers in the country selected to increase the breeding population of the rare Louisiana pine snake. Zoo officials called the snakes the rarest in North America.

Friends of the Fairgrounds meet.

The planning process for the Mid-South Fairgrounds, a mostly unused 155-acre site that sits in the heart of the city, is reopening, the city of Memphis announced last week.

After many plans for the Fairgrounds have been tossed around and ultimately shelved in the past, Paul Young, the director of the city’s Division of Housing and Community Development (HCD), which is spearheading the project, said redevelopment could start as early as 2018.

“We feel like now the time is right to dust off those past plans, see what things work, what things don’t work, and introduce it to the community so we can come up with a plan and maximize this significant opportunity that our city has,” Young said during a press conference at the Fairgrounds last week.

Over the next few months, the city will work to complete a comprehensive plan for the site. That plan will be submitted in a Tourism Development Zone (TDZ) application to the state in hopes of procuring a good chunk of the funding for the project.

To complete the plan, Young said the city will build on the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) research and planning completed in 2015.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the goal is to have applications to the Memphis City Council and State of Tennessee by the end of the year.

The planning process will also include a series of

public meetings to gather input from the community on what they hope to see at the Fairgrounds. The first will be held Thursday, August 10th at the Kroc Center.

These public input meetings come as good news to Marvin Stockwell, co-founder of grassroots group Friends of the Fairgrounds (FOTF). Stockwell said since 2015 he and co-founder John Minervini have worked hard to develop an inclusive and equitable vision for the Fairgrounds that benefits all Memphians.

They did this by hosting a series of meetings for members of the Fairground’s surrounding neighborhoods, some of which include Orange Mound, Glenview, and Chickasaw Gardens.

These meetings, Stockwell said, were set up to listen to the stakeholders’ desires for the Fairgrounds, while learning what the community needs and how developing the Fairgrounds could meet those needs.

He said after those meetings it was apparent that residents in the area miss the connection they once had with the Fairgrounds site and want to see that space put to better use.

“Our stakeholders know that amazing, transformative change at the Fairgrounds is possible,” Stockwell said.

As the city begins to re-open its plans for the Fairgrounds, Stockwell said he hopes that the group will

In early summer, Stockwell said city officials reached out to FOTF to compare notes about plans for the Fairgrounds. He said though officials were receptive of their vision and he left the meeting feeling optimistic, he hasn’t received “any assurance that FOTF will influence the process yet.”

However, Stockwell said the last time he spoke with Doug McGowen, the city’s chief operating officer, McGowen told him “all options are still on the table.”

Ultimately, Stockwell said whether FOTF is involved in the process or not, he hopes the city will remain transparent and inclusive throughout the entire planning stages.

Tale of Two Parties

NASHVILLE, MEMPHIS — The two major political parties each had major events last week, and the concerns that dominated those events provided clear statements as to how the parties see themselves and their current place in the world.

On Thursday night, the Tennessee Republican Party held its annual Statesmen’s dinner in Nashville; the rank-and-file party members and sympathizers in attendance filled the cavernous ballroom of the capital city’s newish Music City Center, and the party’s elected officials, party gentry, and declared gubernatorial candidates were numerous enough that not all of them could be afforded speaking time on stage.

Among those personages who did make it to the dais were Scott Golden of Jackson, the state party chairman, who understandably beamed with pride as he informed the crowd that this year’s GOP banquet was the largest in the history of the state; U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, who reviewed elements of national policy; and Governor Bill Haslam, who noted with bemused delight that, for all the accepted verity that Tennessee was now deep-dyed red in its politics, he was actually the first Republican Governor to be able to work in harness with a

State House Majority Leader Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley declared for governor, thus pitting him against former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean in a 2018 primary that will be the first truly contested one in recent memory involving prominent and respected Democratic Party figures.

And, in Memphis last week, the newly reconstituted Shelby County Democratic Party held two spirited forums before sizeable crowds in which five candidates for the party chairmanship made their case for election.

The five — Shelby County Schools official Corey Strong, political consultant Ken Taylor, charter school operator Anthony Anderson, freelance consultant Thurston Smith, and former University of Memphis law professor Larry Pivnick — all had their moments, but it was Strong who emerged victorious in balloting Saturday at the IBEW union hall on Madison.

The energy of the contest, coupled with the number of new faces among the party’s 150-strong elected Grass Roots Council, offered evidence that, in Shelby County at least, Democrats might be ready to mount a serious challenge to Republican hegemony.

And the featured speaker of this star-studded GOP celebration was Vice President Mike Pence.

If there were moments in the evening’s celebration that sounded somewhat like gloating, that, too, was surely understandable. This was, after all, a party that — from the standpoint of Tennessee, anyhow — seemed to have won every prize worth taking.

In his remarks, Pence laid it on thick, invoking specters and straw figures from the other side that trouble partyline Republicans — former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “unelected bureaucrats” operating from “the comfort of taxpayer-funded metal desks,” the “death tax” (i.e., the inheritance tax), and, of course, “the Obamacare nightmare” (aka the Affordable Care Act).

And, as Pence described him in an extended and soaring apostrophe, President Donald Trump was not the dissembling, self-absorbed, and inexperienced figure of so much media coverage, but an almost regally accomplished executive, a “man of his word … a man of action,” who had achieved “remarkable success, restoring security and prosperity,” and who stood “without apology as the leader of the free world.”

Such is the nature of self-congratulatory banquets.

According to the International Rescue Committee, nearly 5.4 million people have died in DRC since the conflict began, the deadliest conflict since the Second World War. forbidden place at a whites-only library or lunch counter, and then a ride in a paddy wagon to jail. “The seven daughters of Robert and Alversa Williams Lee were committed to the struggle for justice and equality at the forefront of the protests to break down segregation and Jim Crow laws,” according to the recently placed marker in downtown Memphis, approved by the Shelby County Historical Commission.

During the run of ‘Ruined’ (Aug. 11th to Sept. 3rd), Hattiloo will also cast a spotlight on the stories of women close to home, who, like so many women of the DRC, are survivors of abuse. In partnership with the Family Safety Center, which serves families of Memphis and Shelby County who are caught up in the trauma of domestic violence, on Saturday, August 19th and Saturday, August 26th, from 6-7:15 p.m., Hattiloo will host free discussions featuring local women who have

found refuge in the Family Safety Center, much like Congolese women found refuge in Mama Nadi’s bar. They will share their stories of trauma and of triumph amid Hattiloo’s lobby poster installation displaying facts and services around domestic violence in Memphis.

attiloo will open its 12th season with Lynn Nottage’s play Ruined, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the Obie Award for Best New American Play.

The play is set in a rainforest bar and brothel in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Mama Nadi, the establishment’s matriarch, gives asylum to women who have been “ruined” by the civil war. Both government soldiers and rebel forces frequent her bar to enjoy the company of the women.

While Mama Nadi fights to keep the peace in her establishment, the women fight to establish peace within themselves. Ruined courageously reveals how the violence of war affects women, yet the play still sparkles with humor, music, and even romance.

In 2004, Lynn Nottage traveled to East Africa, where she spent two months at a Ugandan refugee camp, collecting the narratives of Congolese women who had been brutalized in the fierce civil war waged over the valuable minerals that go into computer and smartphone

breaking away from the hitherto closed ranks of Republican Obamacare decriers to hold hearings and entertain bipartisan negotiations on health care. Good for him. But to the crowd in Nashville, Alexander boasted of his prior votes with the rest of the GOP pack to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act and vowed, “I’m not going to rest until the 350,000 Tennesseans who buy their insurance on the free market are able to go into that market and buy insurance that they choose to buy and can afford.” There’s nothing in that statement that an exponent of the ACA couldn’t also endorse.

Meanwhile, the five candidates for the chairmanship of the newly restored Shelby County Democratic Party spoke to some worthy goals in two Memphis forums last week. But almost all of them, including eventual chairmanelect Corey Strong, laid what seems to us misguided emphasis on a need to create the most forbidding litmus test possible for participation in party affairs — one that would almost guarantee, say, that anyone who had ever cast a Republican vote need not apply.

Really? Might as well put a sign on party headquarters: “Converts Not Wanted/Take Your Nasty Votes Away.”

All we are recommending, to the true believers in either party, is that they step aside from their accustomed bromides and bloviations and make an effort to examine their preconceived notions with a neutral eye. They might actually learn something.

The ICE-man Cometh We cannot look on idly as President Trump’s repressive immigration policy tears the Hispanic community apart. ing families apart. The greatest enemy to these communities is not President Trump, but the apathy of those who profit from decades of work undertaken by the undocumented. If Trump is to be stopped in his supposed “patriotic” pursuit of deportation, American apathy must end immediately.

In light of deep fears spreading through a community under attack, the response of our elected leaders has been silence. County Mayor Mark Luttrell has said nothing.

Several months ago, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland stated that the city would not enforce immigration laws and that Memphis remained a “welcoming city.” Those were important statements at a time when the threat was largely theoretical.

But now our community is struggling to make sense of the ICE incursions. With the school year starting, families will be exposed to ICE stops and raids while carrying out the most mundane of tasks, such as taking their kids to school. The time for broad platitudes from our mayors is over.

We need action immediately.

First, school property must be declared a safe zone from ICE enforcement. Second, the Shelby County Sheriff should refuse any future collaboration with ICE at the Shelby County jail. Third, our city and county mayors should begin monthly meetings with the Latino community to explore policies to help resist and impede ICE enforcement within our city and county.

But resistance to this assault cannot be left solely in the hands of our local government. Individual citizens must demand action. We can begin by contacting local, state, and federal government officials, demanding a stop to ICE’s cruel tactics. We should also call for passage of comprehensive immigration legislation that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. As the government continues its raids, we can push back against the ICE machine via sustained resistance both in the courtrooms and in the streets.

Silence and apathy have led us to where we are today, together with a political neophyte president in D.C., who reveals, daily, dictatorial tendencies. If Memphis is truly a “welcoming city,” we must not sit idly by while ICE tears families apart.

As with almost all his policy initiatives, President Trump’s administration has resorted to obfuscation and lies; this is particularly true with regard to immigration enforcement.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump claimed that his administration would focus on arresting undocumented criminals, the so-called “bad hombres.” Homeland Security insists that this, in fact, is official policy. The most current Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Memphis suggest a very different reality.

From July 23rd to July 26th, as part of a regional operation, ICE arrested 83 individuals on immigration charges in Nashville, New Orleans, and Memphis.

Of the 83 arrested, 64 had no significant criminal background.

This means that 80 percent of the arrests made during these raids were conceivably of people who were taking their kids to day care or the grocery store. These arrested and detained individuals are our friends, family, and neighbors. They are an integral part of the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our cities.

Unfortunately, we have been growing accustomed, since January 2017, to Trump administration deceptive-speak and aggressive actions. Last week, we should remember, Trump told police on Long Island, New York, that it’s “okay” to rough up individuals during detention and arrest.

But the president is not solely responsible for the fear facing the Latino community in Memphis and around the country. For nearly two decades, both political parties have recognized that our broken immigration system serves neither our economy nor the individuals caught in its archaic, outdated structure.

Rather than taking proactive measures, most politicians, business owners, and citizens have remained silent while a shadow economy developed in agriculture, construction, and the service industries. The vast majority of Americans said nothing as generations of undocumented immigrants toiled in the U.S.A., constructing our houses, preparing our food, and taking care of our children.

We Americans perpetuated the lie that this system was somehow mutually beneficial. We professed our personal support for legislation reforming this broken system, but failed to take effective action to make reform a concrete reality.

Our silence and inaction have created the perfect storm, whereby entire communities live under siege as a callous opportunist seeks political gain by tear-

“J

ared McLemore is live on Facebook.” Those who clicked immediately saw a dark street scene with trees in the background. Then, McLemore, shirtless, rushes into the frame and sits crosslegged, his expression strangely blank. He pours gasoline over his body from a red can. Voices come from offscreen as he fumbles with matches. A second body rushes in, tackling him, but it’s too late. The frame is filled with flames. Fully engulfed, but eerily calm, McLemore runs off screen.

The screaming begins. *** Rock-and-roll came naturally to Alyssa Moore. Her parents were punk rockers in the Antenna scene of the 1980s. She picked up the guitar and wrote her first song at age 8. At 13, she played her first gig — a kid’s birthday party. Music became her passion, her escape from reality.

“I’ve had family problems my whole life,” she says. “When I turned 14, 15, it was the worst it had ever gotten. They were fighting constantly. … My dad was gone. My mom was so depressed that she would just come home every day and go to sleep.”

Up until the ninth grade, she had been an A student.

After the divorce, her grades faltered. Two months into her junior year, Moore dropped out. “I got my own apartment and started living as an adult. I’ve been living in Midtown since then.”

She met Will Forrest when she was 15. “I remember hearing her music on her MySpace at the time,” he says, “and thinking she was a pretty rad musician. We wound up both frequenting the open mic at Java Cabana and started playing music together.”

The two started dating. They recorded their first album with engineer Kyle Johnson at Rocket Science Audio. “I always wanted to be a rock star,” she says.

“Every night I would go to bed, put on my headset, and listen to whatever female musician I wanted to be at the time: Courtney Love, Chrissie Hynde, whoever. Being a rock star is awesome. But I wanted to be able to do what Kyle did.”

Johnson became her mentor. “He just trusted me so much and had so much confidence in me,” she says.

“Instead of teaching me everything, he said ‘Here’s the keys. Go play. The only way you’re going to figure this out is if you do it a million times.’”

After about five years, Moore and Forrest’s romantic relationship cooled, but their musical collaboration remained strong. Their new band was called Strengths. Their music was a mix of punk, metal, and math rock, with savage guitars and sudden time changes. It was smart and complex. Then, in November 2014, she met McLemore.

“He introduced himself after a Strengths show,” recalls Forrest. “He’s an excessive personality, talks a mile a minute. He was really funny. He wanted to dominate the conversation and be the center of attention.”

The day after the show, he sent Moore a Facebook friend request. “He was working at Ardent; I had started doing sound at Murphy’s. I was a studio rat at that point. It just made sense for us to get together.

“When we started dating, he asked a lot of questions.

He was very intelligent. He had an imagination that I was drawn to. Because I was so fascinated with music and with recording, and he was as well, that was essentially our relationship for the first eight months.”

McLemore told Moore that he had been diagnosed with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. “His mental illness didn’t scare me,” Moore says. “I knew what depression felt like, and I knew that it causes you to do and say things that you wouldn’t otherwise do. I watched my mother, in my childhood, be super depressed, and I saw when she came out of it, she blossomed. This is a guy who has had shitty luck his entire life, I thought.

He’ll be okay, I just have to prove to him that somebody can love him with a mental illness.”

Mitchell Manley met McLemore when they were 17 years old. “When I was living in Milan and was playing in bands with him, I knew he had a lot of personal trauma.”

McLemore was married while in Jackson. But after about seven years, his wife left him in the middle of the night. “None of his friends ever saw her again,” says Manley. “Shortly after his wife divorced him, he attempted suicide. He tried to shoot himself, but the gun jammed. They airlifted him to Memphis and immediately put him into mental health treatment. Then he tried to start a better life.”

Moore says she did her best to help McLemore. “As he opened up to me about his illness and the things he had done about his illness, I was like, ‘You need to be on medicine. Don’t be ashamed.’”

Moore says that while they were together, they smoked marijuana but didn’t take any other drugs. With her family’s painful history of alcoholism, Moore didn’t drink, and for a while, McLemore didn’t either. “He admitted to me that he had an Adderall addiction from the ages of 22 to 28. He was prescribed Adderall, because doctors

thought he had ADHD instead of bipolar disorder. That was a big mistake. They gave speed to a psychopath.”

After five months, the couple moved into a Midtown guest house. “If something went wrong, he would say ‘I’m going to kill myself.’ He would break down and cry a lot, and I would hold him and console him.”

Strengths was one of the tightest bands in Memphis, but McLemore convinced Moore and Forrest that something was wrong. Forrest says McLemore suggested starting a new band. “He offered the solution that he would play drums, and we could be super tight. But it wound up being a way lessfunctional band, and it fell apart.”

The new band played one show. “After that show, Jared said, ‘Look, I’ve tried to be friends with Will. I just can’t do it.’ So, we talked to his therapist about it, and even his therapist sided with him. He said it was strange for me to be in a band with my boyfriend from high school. She convinced both of us that me being friends with Will was a bad idea. … Looking back, [Jared’s] motive was to isolate me from my friends.”

“This trajectory is very common,” says Dr. J. Gayle Beck, professor of psychology at the University of Memphis. “This pattern almost ensures that she has less social support and few places to turn when stressed.” *** In February 2016, Moore and McLemore were working together in the studio. “I don’t remember what caused the argument, but he stood up, grabbed my wrist, pulled me up, dragged me to the bathroom, closed the door and locked it behind us. He pushed me to the corner, and pushed me down on the ground. He held my hands back, and said ‘Okay, this is it. Now you’re going to die.’”

Trapped against the wall in the bathroom, Moore talked McLemore down from murder. “I scraped my

hand against the wall. I remember looking at it and thinking, ‘Well, I’m bleeding because of my boyfriend.

But it’s so tiny. Surely this means nothing. He just had a bipolar episode.’”

Moore told no one of the incident. “It is shameful to say, ‘Hey, the man I love locked me in the bathroom and tried to kill me.’ You feel like an idiot.”

Terror and threats became regular occurrences. “He was very smart about not leaving bruises in obvious places,” she says. “To the day he died, he would say, ‘I never beat you up,’ but I would say that he did, because that’s what it felt like.”

Beck says there is a broad range of abusive behaviors beyond beatings. “There is a common belief that Intimate Partner Violence [IPV] is only abuse if it entails hitting and punching. IPV subsumes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Sometimes abusers will threaten to kill the victim and later say, ‘I was just angry — I’d never do that.’ Being threatened with a weapon is abuse.”

“People ask, ‘Why did you stay with him?’” says Moore.

“I beg that they look at their own relationship and imagine their partner turning on them and wondering how long it would take for them to be like, ‘Okay, I gotta get out.’” *** The first week of August 2016, Moore got a rare moment away from McLemore. She used the opportunity to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “At that point, when you have somebody else validate you like that, you kind of freak out a little bit. I wasn’t quite prepared to make a plan to leave at that point. But having someone else tell me, ‘Yes, you’re being abused. You need to leave’ is so powerful.”

“He said that I’d been slut dancing to this band. My denial of it sent him over the edge. I was making dinner when he decided to attack me.”

At knife point, he forced her into the bedroom. “He said, ‘Take your clothes off. Now.’ I just kind of looked at him, because he had never done that before. He said, ‘You know what’s going to happen. Do it.’ And he has the knife in his hand. So, I get naked, because I have to. He comes over to me and gets on top of me. He doesn’t rape me, other than what he’s already done by making me get naked. He grabs my neck and holds my face down.

He chokes me. Then he stops, lets go for a minute, and watches me. Then he does it again a second time. Beyond that, my memory blacks out. I disassociated a little bit. I know at some point he ran, but he didn’t take my phone with him, so I called 911.”

The police took the report and told her to find another place to stay. Moore went to her mother’s apartment. “I had to tell her everything.”

Moore informed her friends that McLemore was on the run from police. Two days later, musician Josh Stevens saw McLemore walking on Madison. “At this point, he had either given up and he authentically wanted help, or he just couldn’t run any more and wanted somewhere to recharge.

We took him back to the house. He was very docile.”

The next day, Stevens’ girlfriend and McLemore’s cousin took him to the Memphis Mental Health Institute.

Instead of checking himself in to the hospital, McLemore bolted. Stevens rushed to Moore’s side. They called the police. “Then we saw Jared.”

McLemore started running towards Moore. “He was literally going to kill her,” says Stevens. “I saw it in his eyes. …The last thing I remember my friend Jared saying to me — and I say this because he wasn’t my friend after this — was ‘I should have killed you and your girlfriend last night when I had the chance.’ We tussled. I got him down, but he got away.”

McLemore stole Moore’s car. As he was driving away, Moore’s father Mike was arriving. He recognized McLemore and followed him. McLemore stopped, got out of the car, and the two fought. Again, McLemore got away.

Meanwhile, the police had arrived. Moore says they were less than helpful. “I told them what had happened the night before, and they just kept hushing me. They didn’t look up at all. No eye contact or anything. They didn’t tell me what to expect, where he was going, nothing.”

McLemore returned to the house and gave himself up to police. He was committed to the Western State Mental Health Institute in Bolivar.

“I think that we expect too much from law enforcement in this domain,” says Beck. “It takes a woman [on average] six or seven attempts to successfully leave an abusive/violent romantic relationship. The implication of this is that the police will be called multiple times to her address. If they ask him [or her] to leave and the couple reunites, they have done all that is within their power to do. We cannot rely on the police to ‘solve’ the DV [domestic violence] in Memphis.”

After he was released from the hospital, McLemore was taken to jail. His mother bailed him out, and he was put on diversion. He went to live with her in Milan, Tennessee.

He was forbidden to contact Moore and fitted with a GPS ankle bracelet.

In early September, Moore decided to make her story public, inspired by other women in Midtown who had called out their abusers on Facebook. “They were not saying these things to villainize their abusers and rapists. They were saying things to give courage to people who had had these things happen to them. Tell them, this happened to me, too. … In retrospect, I did it 14 exactly wrong. I should have posted every picture I had, every screenshot that I had. I shouldn’t have given him

any benefit of the doubt. Some people who are raping, abusing, hitting, being violent — sociopathic people — they cannot change their behaviors. Why should we not call them out?”

Moore’s Facebook post detailing her abuse at McLemore’s hands was widely seen and shared in the Midtown music community. One of the women who saw it was Jessie Honoré, a domestic abuse survivor who had become an advocate for women in similar trouble. “I had friended [Alyssa] because she is so great. I reached out to her. She’s younger than me. I’m a mom of two. I felt like I could offer her some advice.”

Honoré invited Moore to an online support group for Memphis women who have been victims of intimate partner violence. “Abusive relationships make you question your own judgment and your own gut instincts,” Moore says. “So, having a group to nurture you while you’re coming out of that fog is invaluable.”

The months that followed were free of abuse, but Moore faced new complications. She was stuck paying for rent at both the studio and her home. Moore had been advised to buy a gun, but she wasn’t comfortable with firearms. Instead, she got a knife for protection.

For a while, McLemore seemed to be getting better. He expressed regret publicly and privately. But it didn’t last.

He moved back to Memphis, and the threats resumed.

“He was sending and posting pictures of himself with a gun in his mouth,” says Moore.

After being contacted by multiple concerned people, Moore eventually texted McLemore. “I sent a message that said, ‘Don’t talk to me. Get your shit together. Stop circulating these pictures. Don’t kill yourself. Things aren’t going to be awful forever.’ He sent a bunch of apologies. I said ‘Thanks, I don’t want to hear any more from you.’”

The contact turned out to be a mistake. “Throughout March and April, he would contact me. It was suicidal stuff, so I would call the police. I was not dealing with him any more.”

On the evening of May 9, 2017, Moore was washing dishes in her apartment. She looked up to see McLemore staring at her through the window. McLemore scraped the screen with something metallic. It was her knife. “He had obviously broken into my house or my car to get it, because those were the only places I ever kept it. He told me he had a gun. He said ‘I ought to kill you.’ That’s when I ran into the bathroom and called 911 again.”

When police arrived an hour later, McLemore was gone. “I told them many times that he was on probation, that he sent me pictures of the gun in his hand.” The police seemed skeptical of the situation. They told Moore that the

Domestic Violence unit would call her the next day. The call never came. “I was afraid to go outside,” says Moore. “I didn’t think he had any reason not to kill me at this point.”

Desperate, she made another Facebook post detailing McLemore’s threats. “My intention up until the day he died was to get him into a hospital. I kept thinking, ‘he only wants to kill me because he’s depressed.’”

On Thursday, May 11th, Moore went to the Family Safety Center to file a restraining order against McLemore.

She was told it took two hours to process, and the center was closing in an hour. That night, Moore got a message from McLemore’s roommate. “The police had shown up, searched the house, but they couldn’t find the gun,” she says. “Jared was acting sane and normal, so they didn’t take him anywhere. This was after the Facebook post, after hundreds of people had called the police. They showed up to his house, searched the place, and left. They didn’t take it seriously, at all.”

The next morning, Moore returned to the Family Safety Center. “Through them, I was able to get a warrant for his arrest,” she says. “Eventually, I went to work. I figured the police were coming.” *** Friday, May 12th, at Murphy’s was a triple bill. Paul Garner had contracted with Moore to record his band, Aktion Kat. “We booked the show about a month prior. We respected Alyssa as a recording artist, and we knew she would do a great job.”

Garner, an activist at the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, learned about McLemore from the Facebook post.

“This was a person who had done everything a victim is told to do and was essentially shrugged off.”

Moore had asked Forrest to come to the club. “There had been so many times when he would threaten to show up,” he says. “I would go up there a lot of nights and hang out. I was really exhausted, so I said I would go next door and lay down for a minute. I kind of dozed off.”

Murphy’s staff was aware of the situation, so Moore says she felt safe. “I thought surely the police were going to come and arrest him. But about 10:30, I got a message from him: ‘I have a warrant out for my arrest. I didn’t assault anybody. I must die.’ Then about an hour later he showed up.”

Aktion Kat was setting up when McLemore walked in and made a beeline for Moore. “He was shirtless, and he was already covered in gasoline. He grabbed my arm and rubbed it down a time or two and nodded. He had told me, ‘I’m going to cover myself in gasoline and set myself on fire. That’s how I’m going to die.’ He said goodbye, and

even know who it was — grabbed me and hugged me and said, ‘You don’t have to be afraid any more. I’m not letting go of you.’ It was exactly what I needed right then. I wish I knew who it was.” *** The horrific video quickly went viral. Within hours, it had spread to England, where The Sun tabloid published it on their website.

Garner was taken to the hospital with second and third degree burns on his calves and hands. He was briefly kept in the same room as McLemore, who died about eight hours after the fire.

“I really wanted to highlight that I don’t like the whole hero individual narrative that they were trying to hit me with,” he says. “I wanted more to be focused on, why did this happen? This person had been reported multiple times. He had been active on Facebook, and when people were tagging police and asking why they didn’t do anything, he was commenting on those threads.

As someone who has experienced police surveillance in recent years, I know they have social media tools like Geofeedia that they are using to track us and where we are having protests. I wish that same kind of energy would go into a legal investigation into someone who has been reported as a threat by other folks.”

That night, Jessie Honoré started a GoFundMe campaign for Moore. “She was very insistent on the details being correct, and very insistent on not asking for a single penny more than she would need. We broke it down. What if we were able to raise enough money so you didn’t have to go to work for 30 days? What is six months of trauma therapy? I reached out to a local therapist and asked what she would charge Alyssa for therapy.”

The goal Honoré settled on was $6,300. More than $25,000 rolled in the first day. “That was just Midtowners,”

says Honoré. “Then it went viral across the country the next day.” When the GoFundMe was finally closed after a month, more than $42,000 had been raised. A benefit concert at Memphis Made Brewery raised an additional $3,000. “It changed her life,” says Honoré. “That’s an awesome thing that came out of this. People give a damn.” *** Three American women are killed by their intimate partners every day. A 2006 study by the Violence Policy Center estimated 1,000-1,500 murder-suicides happen annually, the vast majority of which involve men killing their intimate partners. A 2015 study by Everytown for Gun Safety found that 57 percent of mass murderers have a history of domestic violence. If Moore had not made the community aware of her plight, and if people like Garner and the staff of Murphy’s had not been ready to respond so quickly, many others could have died.

At the University of Memphis, Gayle Beck runs the Athena Project, a mental health research clinic for victims of IPV. “The emotional aftermath of IPV varies by the individual, and so there is not a one-size-fits-all approach that we can advocate for every woman,” she says. Common psychological scars from IPV include Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. “The Athena Project offers cognitive-behavioral treatment for PTSD stemming from IPV. All of the services are free and completely confidential. If a reader wants to learn more, they can phone me at (901) 678-3973.”

“After making my Facebook post, I had so many people privately message me with their own stories. They didn’t want to go public with them. They just wanted to share their stories with someone.” says Moore. “Abuse comes in so many forms. … It’s not always beating. It’s not always this spectacular, but I guarantee that every other person who has been abused feels as crappy as I do about it.”

No one knew he was broadcasting his suicide live on Facebook. “By the time I got outside, he was on the other side of the street, assuming the crosslegged position and pouring the stuff over his head. I had a couple of seconds to try to prevent him from doing what it was obvious he was about to do.”

He charged McLemore and tried to kick the matches from his hands. “As soon as I made contact, I felt the heat.”

Moore was at the door. “The flames shot up 10 feet high. At this point, I don’t see Paul. All I see is Jared on fire.”

McLemore silently stood up and ran toward Moore. Garner was on fire too. “I saw the little grassy field next to the P&H and thought, maybe that grass is wet. I was rolling around over there until my friend Scott Prather ran across the street and jumped on me and put me out.” Moore waited until two other people ran in before she closed the door. “There was a moment when I was on one side of the door, and Jared was on the other side of the door. I was staring him in the fucking face while he was on fire. I was trying to lock the door, but the heat was so intense.”

Moore fled into the bar. McLemore burst through the door. “I saw Steve [Wacaster] coming out with the fire extinguisher,” she says. McLemore crumpled to the ground as Steve sprayed him with the fire extinguisher.

“People were pouring water and beer, trying to put him out. It was nauseating.”

Forrest was awakened by a call from Moore and ran into Murphy’s. “Jared was laying there, half melted. He saw me. I could kind of hear an eagerness in his voice when he saw me. He said, ‘Will, help me. Will, help me.’ The smell of him. … I will never forget that.”

Outside, Moore was in shock. “Some woman — I don’t

Me: Hey, so, I was wondering if maybe, you know, you might be able to drop by the house for a minute and push my butt?

Jordan Carlos: (Pause).

Yeah, I know, that’s not the conventional way to start any conversation, let alone an interview. But Carlos, who’s coming to Memphis for a show at RockHouse Live this week, is more sympathetic than surprised. Carlos is a multiple threat — an actor, stand-up comic, and comedy writer who’s lent his considerable talents to projects like Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. He was Stephen Colbert’s long-suffering “black friend” on The Colbert Report, and he’s gotten really good at doing impressions of Donald Trump and Barack Obama. But most of the time, he’d rather talk about how animals have sex.

“Sure, man,” he says, regarding my request. “If it’s like that, I’ll come over and push your butt.” Carlos does a lot of animal humor. He’s been the face of SharkWeek on Instagram, and has an especially funny routine about boy blue whales who have no trouble meeting girl blue whales or even achieving penetrative sex with them. But whales have trouble with the whole in-and-out part and require a special whale friend to swim by and give their tush a push. “You know, I think there really could be an app for that,” Carlos quips.

“As a kid, I used to watch Wild World of Animals and National Geographic Explorer,” he says. “I wasn’t all that political, but then late-night comedy made a shift into the more political realm, and you have to go either with the wave or get crushed by it. But I love talking about animals. The thing we all have in common is we’re human. We can talk about mating habits of pigs and how they have 30-minute orgasms. It’s fun to get into that, and the best part is it never gets back to the animals. So, I never get any hate mail from them.

They don’t care; they just live life in the moment.”

Carlos just wrapped a pilot for a Full Frontal-style show on TBS dealing with tech instead of politics. He’s also got a Comedy Central show in the works called Holmes about a Brooklyn guy with dissociative disorder who’s called “Holmes” so many times he starts believing he’s Sherlock Holmes.

Yo Soy From by Vanessa González may not be the most visually striking piece in the Dixon Gallery & Gardens’ “Location, Location, Location” exhibit, but, literally and figuratively, it says a lot — particularly about the artist’s state of mind. Wild bits of thread that want to twist and friz and be unruly have been tamed and molded into cursive letters telling a story in mixed-up Spanish and English. The piece lists some basic facts about a life — family members and favorite foods. It also tells a secret story — a story about a MexicanAmerican artist living in a perpetual state of translation. “I think in Spanish,” González says in perfect English. She uses art to translate the conflicting emotions of a Mexican-American immigrant into something universal.

Place, identity, travel, and dislocation are narrative threads connecting a trio of exhibits currently on display at the Dixon. “Power & Piety: Spanish Colonial Art” looks at Catholic Spain’s influence on the art and culture of South America. “Edward Giobbi: An Artist Comes to Memphis” explores the lasting impact a peripatetic painter had on the Bluff City after spending only a year here in the 1960s. “Location, Location, Location” binds the exhibits together, bringing together a body of work by a pair of Mexican-American artists who are both Memphis College of Art graduates.

González was still in high school when she moved to America with her parents She vividly recalls all the ways she was constantly reminded that she was from somewhere else. “I’d go to the doctor and have to choose between checking off a box that said Hispanic, Latina, or Mexican American. I’m all three of them. Why did I have to choose?” she asks. Art school is where she finally found her niche.

“MCA didn’t have a large Hispanic community, but they made me feel welcome,” González says. That’s when she started to use art to explore conflicting emotions about her evolving identity with pieces like Yo Soy From and “Collados,” a collection of shattered ceramic faces with their mouths sewn shut. Bullet casings drip from sealed lips.

“Location, Location, Location” also collects work by Fidencio Fifield-Perez who builds collaged multimedia work from old maps.

Offbeat Elvis Some of the most compelling — and surprising — embodiments of the King.

rare live tracks from the Louisiana Hayride and other shows sound fulsome, immediate, and nearly noiseless.

The clarity far outpaces the once-canonical set, The Complete 50’s Masters, first released in 1992, although one should still revisit the 2005 reissue to hear his post-

Prince, god, boy, or baby? The latter answer is proffered by experimental group the Residents, in their little-known 1989 concept album, The King and Eye. Doom-laden synth reinterpretations of classic Elvis songs, delivered with fervid, faux-redneck vocals, are mixed with clips of an adult telling real children a fauxfairy tale. “Once there was a baby, and the baby wanted to be king.” If the concept is off-putting on paper, to these ears the music is pleasantly disconcerting: a retro-futuristic setting for a menacing, yet sympathetic, antihero crawling with anxieties.

But for deconstructing Elvis, it’s hard to beat local auteur Mike McCarthy, who has a bit of an Elvis obsession. He’ll be hawking his graphic novel of Elvis-as-zombie highjinks, HELVIS, on August 16th at 901 Comics. And McCarthy’s short film, Elvis Meets the Beatles, may be his greatest homage: A kind of Hard Day’s Night on acid, it recreates the tension of the Fabs’ first encounter with their hero, blending a semi-ridiculous cast with a sharp script and what can only be called a farcical sense of foreboding.

The very groovy soundtrack was released by Rockin’ Bones Records in 2006. Another of McCarthy’s films, Tupelove, is a more affectionate look at Elvis’ hometown, starring local chanteuse Amy LaVere.

Yet perhaps the most affectionate take on the King is a lesser-known gem from the late, great Alex Chilton. His pre-Big Star “I Wish I Could Meet Elvis” circulated for years as a bootleg before its first official release on the Ardent label’s release, 1970, and later on Omnivore’s Free Again. It’s an amusing, Gram Parsons-esque swipe at fandom, with Chilton exclaiming, “Wella-wella it sure would feel real weird/ if Elvis/was sitting right here!” Though served up with a heaping teaspoon of irony, Chilton’s love of the King was very real, as anyone who heard him croon “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” in his latter days can confirm.

And that may be the ultimate message from the Memphis underground: Despite the smog of hype surrounding the King, and whether he was an alien, god, prince, boy, or baby, we want him … we need him … we love him.

ojo Nixon, the gruff troubadour of the 1980s, once sang that “Elvis Is Everywhere,” and it’s true.

Beyond Elvis Week, he permeates our collective consciousness. As Mojo observed, he’s in your jeans, he’s in your cheeseburger, and even “in Joan Rivers, but he’s trying to get out!” He’s so omnipresent that discerning Presleyphiles can have a tough time sorting through his manifestations. So, I offer up this (very subjective) alternative catalog of where to find the most compelling — and surprising — embodiments of the King.

First of all, look to the skies! As Mojo enthused, “Everybody in outer space looks like Elvis! ’Cos Elvis is a perfect being! We’re all moving to perfect peace and harmony, towards Elvisness! Why do ya think they call it evolution, anyway? It’s really Elvislution! Elvislution!”

This is confirmed by a magnificent CD collection from 2012, Elvis: Prince from Another Planet. The title is taken from a New York Times review of what was, surprisingly, the King’s only live booking in the Big Apple: a run of four shows at Madison Square Garden in 1972. This is Elvis in full 1970s glory. He seems to be testing the fit of his regalia, and it’s still early enough in the game that you can feel the TCB Band’s excitement. And, thanks to found footage from a fan who smuggled in a camera, you can also see it.

The set’s DVD presents the restored home movie intercut with comments from band members and New Yorkers who attended the shows, including rock writer and Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, who gushes that “he functioned as a god. It’s very seldom that you get a chance to go to a show at Mt. Olympus.”

Prince or god? At one time, he was just A Boy from Tupelo. That’s the title of a new CD set released just days ago by Sony, subtitled The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings, and it drives home the realization that Elvis was barely 18 when he started his career. The first complete collection of every studio and live recording made in the first two years of his career, it offers a hairraising intimacy due to thousands of hours spent in the restoration and remastering of the tracks. Even once-

Tale of Two Cities Memphis and Nashville lay claim to the King’s legacy.

Hayride, out of Shreveport, doing weekly broadcasts that built his reputation as a performer and led to tours that expanded both his audience and his geometrically increasing regional fame.

Along the way, Elvis picked up a canny, self-serving manager — one “Colonel” Tom Parker, as he called himself, a Dutchborn former carny who was far-sighted enough to see in Elvis a rough diamond bigger than the Ritz. Soon enough, Parker had engineered the sale of Elvis’ contract from Sun to RCA, the giant record company that had national clout and recording studios in Nashville.

And soon enough, too, Elvis had the aforementioned “Heartbreak Hotel” out under RCA auspices and with backing on the track from such Nashville luminaries as guitarist Chet Atkins and pianist Floyd Cramer. The song was more alt-country than the rawer multi-sourced rockabilly

s Memphians often see it, there is a certain amount of disingenuousness in the way Nashville, the rival sister city up the road, presents its relationship to Elvis Presley. In 2012, the 35th anniversary of the King’s passing right here at Graceland, Tennessee’s capital city was not about to play, er, second fiddle in its appreciation of such an icon. “Music City,” as it styles itself, organized a bigger-than-usual week-long festival in Elvis’ honor from August 10th to August 18th of that year, calling it “Elvis Week,” in the mode of the simultaneous rites held annually in Memphis.

A book by one Don Cusic was released in sync with the festival. Promotional material for the volume, called simply Elvis and Nashville, defined the relationship: “Elvis Presley and Nashville were connected from the earliest days of his career. In 1954 he appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and recorded his first number one hit, ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ in Nashville in 1956. Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, lived in Nashville and Elvis’ fan club activities and merchandising were headquartered in Parker’s office. Elvis recorded 260 songs in RCA Studio B and performed several concerts in the area. Elvis and Nashville documents the connection between Elvis and the city known as ‘Music City, U.S.A.’” Fair enough, but it is also fair to fill in some of the blanks implicit in that description — a couple of them in a single sentence. Yes, the 19-year-old Elvis, fresh on the fame of his first recording for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records back home, did manage to get booked on the Opry, but his experience was less glorious than traumatic.

The tourist-oriented web page visitmusiccity.com described things this way: “After Elvis sang the great Bill Monroe hit, ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky,’ Opry manager Jim Denny reported that Elvis was ‘not bad’ but did not fit the program; therefore he was not invited back.”

More forthcoming historical sources call it less daintily: Denny told the blues-inflected, kinetically active young singer to go back to his former day job, driving trucks. Instead Elvis returned to Phillips’ Union Avenue studio in hometown Memphis, determined to keep on evolving a style under the master. Just as importantly, he hooked up with the Opry’s main competitor, the Louisiana

Presley had done at Sun, though it kept to an eight-bar blues progression, like so many of the Memphis studio sides.

A sidelight to that historical moment: In 1981, the two back-to-back speakers at the annual Elvis seminar at Memphis State University were Mae Axton of Nashville, author of “Heartbreak Hotel,” and the great Phillips, author of Elvis Presley and, by near consensus, of rock-and-roll itself. Axton’s account of the importance of her song in launching Elvis as a worldwide phenomenon must have seemed to Phillips nothing less than an undue appropriation.

“Goddamn!” he kept saying, alternatingly with none-too-fond mentions of Axton’s name, until finally he was able to settle into his own remarks.

Sibling rivalries notwithstanding, the two musically notable Tennessee cities each have a just claim to the legacy of Elvis Presley, and each is entitled to trumpet the fact during this week of commemorating the King in the 40th anniversary year of his passing.

But we all know where Graceland is, now, don’t we? It’s on our end of the road.

The 40th anniversary of the King’s death — August 16, 1977 — is looming. The iconic entertainer will be revered with movies, photos, memories — and food.

The also-iconic fried peanut butter and banana sandwich usually comes to mind when people think of Elvis’ favorite foods. Apparently, it also does for Melissa Williams and her son, Glaze Hardage. Using the sandwich as a jump start, they created the “Elvis” cake.

“He loved peanut butter and bananas,” Williams said. “We love banana cake. We love peanut butter frosting.

And it was born.”

When it comes to creating, Williams, who is the owner of Blink Diner at Southern College of Optometry, said she’s “development” and Hardage, the catering manager, is “research.”

The cake also is served at the Arcade Restaurant. Jeffrey Zepatos, the restaurant’s general manager, said the Elvis cake is now available and it will continue to be during Elvis Week.

“Every time we get it, I can only keep it in stock a day, a day and a half at this point,” Zepatos said.

I stumbled upon the Elvis cake by accident one afternoon when I was eating lunch at the Arcade. I just wanted cake for dessert, so I’d have eaten anything.

The restaurant happened to have the Elvis cake that day, so I ordered a hunka hunka of it. I was blown away after the first bite. It’s so delicious. But then I also love the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, which Arcade regularly serves.

When I was recently at the Arcade, I noticed a man and his wife eating Elvis cake at another booth. I had to ask them what they thought.

“I love it,” said Abrann Harrison from Seattle. “It’s absolutely great. It’s fun. We had the Elvis sandwich at Graceland yesterday, but this is fourtimes more intense. The flavor’s just outstanding.”

The cake was “sweet and peanut buttery and got that little banana in there,” said his wife, Sharon. “It was great.”

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen at Blink, I asked Hardage what type of cake he orders for his birthday.

“The banana with the peanut butter frosting,” he said. “Just because it’s so good.”

And who makes it for him? “My mother, of course.”

That’s alright, Mama.

Bubbling Under Sparking Burgundies are an acquired taste.

The Aussies aren’t the only ones in the sparkling red game. Other cultures that never mistook Cold Duck for Champagne make and drink their own without a hint of shame. Rose Regale Sparkling Red comes from the Piedmont region of Italy made from Brachetto grapes. It’s a little lighter and sweeter and drifting a little closer into the neighborhood of Prosecco.

It’s entirely possible that they embrace their “sparkling Burgundies” Down Under because the rest of us sneer at it.

Given the few Aussie’s I’ve met, though, I think they just like what they like. This is a country that could vote itself free of the Queen, but they just can’t be bothered, cause, you know, she seems like a nice lady and all. It wouldn’t seem cricket, mate.

In July 1954 in this very building, the voice of Elvis Presley hit the airwaves for the first time when Dewey Philips broadcast his debut record “That’s All Right (Mama)” on this Red, Hot and Blue radio show. An international superstart was born.

currents and cherries. It’s a picnic wine — made for pizzas and burgers or a turkey sandwich with a big slice of gouda. It’s good, but it’s also just different.

Even if it doesn’t become your go-to, it’s worth sharing a bottle with a few of your less-judgmental friends.

If you want to preserve the bubbly fizz, drink it out of a Champagne flute, which will create less surface area through which the gas can dissipate.

Don’t fret about it though; I’ve had the right Champagne on the right day out of a juice glass, so whatever works. As for the temperature, certainly in the summer and probably in the spring and fall, you’ll want it chilled if not exactly cold, which puts the flavor on mute. In the middle of what we call winter here, room temperature works fine.

ou have to admire the Aussies for their seeming inability to care what other people think. Case in point: the almost Champagne-ish wine known Down Under as a “sparkling Burgundy.” Up here on this side of the planet, we call it a “sparkling shiraz.” Whatever its name, the Aussies do take a degree of national pride over the stuff. So tread lightly when poking fun of their wine. Australia is an evolutionary lone wolf with fully weaponized fauna and flora, so you do not want to throw hands with an Aussie.

Americans, living without the specter of killer house plants, have long had the opportunity to not only out-innovate the Old World, but to out-snob it as well. Show me a cosmopolitan American sommelier who will even consider the sparkling shiraz, and I’ll show you an unpretentious, open-minded, albeit a soon-to-be unemployed, one. As a result, the dedicated stateside oenophile won’t touch it either.

Historically, we have a good reason to be touchy, given our great sparkling red wine shame: Cold Duck. It was a weird, sweet fizz made of an unholy mix of sweet whites and reds and Champagne.

It’s an old German recipe, but at one point in the 1950s, Cold Duck was the most popular “Champagne” in America. That’s on us, and we really should be embarrassed. Still, guilt by association is no way to pick a wine.

Sparkling shiraz is powerful on the fruit, so do yourself a favor and look for a dry one. If you aren’t careful, you’ll have the sensation of drinking a Jolly Rancher Fanta. Or Cold Duck.

The problem is you won’t likely have much of a choice. Being relatively unknown in the states, the selection is slim. You’ll likely need to head to one of the bigger liquor stores, where you preferably know someone you trust. For me, that’s Buster’s, where they only had one on the shelf: the wonderfully named Black Bubbles by Shingleback. It retails for $29.99, and that is about what you’ll pay stateside for a sparkling shiraz worth drinking. It’s won several awards, but none in the northern hemisphere.

Dork Tower

The adaptation of Stephen King’s epic metafantasy The Dark Tower is an epic let down.

S

tephen King can’t catch a break.

I’m speaking filmically, of course. In all other aspects of his life, King is doing fine. He is probably the most successful writer of the last 50 years. He’s the Charles Dickens of horror, to be read widely and remembered far longer than his contemporaries, even the ones who might have had superior talent. King is a good writer, but he has had fantastic agents.

King’s work has been adapted for film (checks Wikipedia) 67 times! That’s a lot! (The Mangler had two sequels? Who knew?) But with the very notable exceptions of The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, and Stand by Me, movies based on King’s works have been pretty awful. (I admit, I have a soft spot for The Running Man, but that was technically a Richard Bachman book.)

The Dark Tower was King’s attempt at epic metafantasy and the project that he chipped away at between blockbuster airport paperbacks for 40 years.

Clearly inspired by Tolkein, it’s not so much singing dwarves and lembas as it is a deep dive into King’s

subconscious.

The Dark Tower sits at the center of at expansive multiverse, protecting the multitude of realities where anything goes. Instead of knights in shining armor, the Tower — and thus, all of the multitudes of realities in the multiverse — is defended by a sacred order of Gunslingers, refugees from Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns that King was obsessed with when he started the series in the early 1970s. Bits and pieces of King’s passing obsessions and other books float up through the more than 4,000-page narrative.

At one point, King himself makes an appearance as both author and character. In the age when HBO is dropping a cool 10 mil on every hour of Game of Thrones, The Dark Tower’s seven volumes sound like the perfect fodder for a long-running prestige TV series. Instead, we get this chop job.

Idris Elba was born to play Roland, the supernatural protagonist, last of the Gunslingers.

He’s got the natural gravitas and credibility as an ass kicker. Roland’s gun was forged from the sword

Excalibur, and he “kills with his heart,” as the Gunslinger’s credo requires. Roland’s sworn enemy is the Man in Black, played by Matthew McConaughey, so pencil thin he seems to have been existing purely on Soylent paste and self-satisfaction.

Armed with the power of suggestion, an army of demonic lackeys, a snazzy Zara for Men duster, and a variety of colored orbs, the Man in Black seeks to destroy the Dark Tower and let in the demons from the dark outer-world so he can … do something.

There was a prophecy that said the mind of a child could destroy the Dark Tower, so the Man in Black’s minions prowl the multiverse finding younglings strong in the Shining to feed into his kid-powered super-laser. I was not really clear on what he was hoping to accomplish with the destruction of the

The young Brooklynite Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) is the latest in a line of generic “chosen ones,” complete with evil step family and doomed mother. While in our reality, (“Keystone Earth”), he is repeatedly upstaged by his neighbor Timmy, played by Michael Barbieri of Ira Sach’s Little Men. Director Nikolaj Arcel would have been better off casting Barbieri as his audience surrogate, given how completely charisma-free Taylor is.

The literary Dark Tower is the result of a prodigious mind high on the writings of Joseph Campbell and, in the ’70s and ’80s at least, heroic doses of drugs. But instead of floating freely

in Jungian archetypal space, the film just touches all the bases of another generic post-Matrix action fantasy. In the grand scheme of this summers’ colossal wastes of money, it goes down easier than, say, the Pirates of the Caribbean death rattle. But I liked The Dark Tower much better when it was called Big Trouble in Little China.

At least Kurt Russell knew how to commit to the ridiculous.

Well, I lost my job. Before you roll your eyes and close your paper or your browser window, hear me out. This isn’t going to be one of those “millennial complaining about adulthood’s minor setbacks” columns. I’ve got some leads lined up and some freelance work in the pipeline, though I’m willing to listen if you’ve got something for me. I’ve adjusted my avocado toast budget. I’ll be fine. No, this is going to be a “millennial complaining about how the Mid-South Coliseum isn’t an aquarium” piece.

It seems so obvious. Of all the redevelopment plans that have been proposed for the Fairgrounds, I’m surprised something like an aquarium hasn’t seriously been considered. Unlike other ideas I’ve seen, an aquarium is something a diverse mix of residents and tourists can enjoy. I am not trying to claim this as an original or unique idea. But I did tweet the following in May 2016: “IDEA — Repurpose what can be salvaged of the Coliseum into an aquarium.

Proximity to CMOM, Zoo, Pink Palace make it a perfect location.” It could get some public funding, grants, private donors, and stuff so it doesn’t require people to buy stuff to stay afloat.

Get it? Stay afloat? Hoo boy, I kill me. Anyway, I heard the city of Memphis is reopening the planning process for redeveloping the Fairgrounds, and I’ve had some time on my hands. So, between phone interviews and checking my email every 14 seconds, I’ve been gathering research and evidence to support my case.

First, the Coliseum is just the right size, and it’s in a good location. At approximately 110,000 square feet, the existing building is comparable in size to facilities like the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. With the surrounding acreage, there’s space to build on or expand later. Visitors from the suburbs, as well as tourists from Mississippi, Arkansas, and beyond could easily access it by I-240 via Airways, or take Hollywood from I-40.

Families could spend a summer morning playing at the Children’s Museum followed by an afternoon of deep sea exploration. The Pink Palace and its CTI Giant Theater are just down the road. Football fans in town for the Liberty Bowl and Southern Heritage Classic could add another activity to their itineraries that amplifies and disperses the events’ economic impact. It would bring revenue to local businesses in the surrounding neighborhoods year-round. In 2016, the Tennessee Aquarium’s 745,000 visitors generated $72.2 million for Chattanooga businesses. Those are some pretty big numbers.

“But what about parking?” some will ask, as they always do. Well, there are enough spaces to accommodate 60-something thousand people at the football stadium, plus street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Tigers play six or seven home games a year. This season’s schedule so far includes only one 11 a.m. kickoff. If one of the Liberty Bowl’s tenants are hosting an event that might complicate parking, here’s an idea: Take the bus. Catch a Lyft. Or go some other time. The fish aren’t going anywhere.

Moving the aquarium animals to another campus would give the zoo room to grow without encroaching further on the park.

Guests could purchase a day pass that includes admission to both attractions and a shuttle ride from the ample spaces at the Fairgrounds. The Greensward could return to its original and best use as a refuge for picnickers, frisbee throwers, and stoned teens.

Most importantly, think of all the kids in Memphis who have only seen fish that were fried and served with hushpuppies and slaw. They deserve field trips as cool as the ones my generation enjoyed — back in the good old days when the Wonders exhibit brought Napoleon’s carriage and Catherine the Great’s jewels to town every year. And if that’s not convincing enough, I’d like to offer one final, irresistibly petty argument: Nashville doesn’t have an aquarium.

One small concern might be finding a way to pay for such an ambitious project. I acknowledge there are some logistical details to work out. But big dreams call for big ideas, and I’m happy to help in any way I can (as I mentioned, I have some time). I’m confident that this idea can reach the right people, who will see the myriad ways in which the city would benefit.

And the Timberlake Family Aquarium or the FedEx Grizzlies Servicemaster Center for Aquatic Research will one day become one of Memphis’ signature attractions.
