Last week, the Flyer’s Toby Sells reported that the Gannett Corporation, which owns the Commercial Appeal, was refusing to pay severance to 23 former employees the company had laid off in April.

Memphis Newspaper Guild president Daniel Connolly said current employees had hung signs around the newspaper’s offices that read, “Shame on Gannett — Pay the Severance.” Connolly added that the Guild had filed a union grievance and federal complaints with the National Labor Relations Board.

Let’s forget for a moment that it’s likely, given the Trump administration’s track record on such matters, that the National Labor Relations Board offices are completely empty and that the agency’s head is a former coal mining CEO. The fact is, Gannett holds all the cards and will do exactly as it pleases with its money and its dwindling number of human resources.

On Monday, Gannett announced that it would sell the CA’s iconic headquarters building at 495 Union and seek smaller office space elsewhere (in Memphis, theoretically). That will take care of those pesky signs, at least.

My theory is that the editorial staff will meet at Cafe Eclectic at 8:30 each morning, then go work from home. I mean, how hard is it to put out an 18-page daily paper with six local stories, anyway? Just kidding. Sort of. It is, however, becoming increasingly clear that Gannett sees the CA’s future as digital, and the paper product is suffering because of it.

Whether in print or digital, we need great Memphis journalists. And we need for them to be treated fairly, not like replaceable factory widgets. In fact, we need journalists, now more than ever.

Just look at what’s happening in Washington, D.C. The Senate outlawed television journalists from interviewing Senators outside the Senate chambers last week. There is no reason for this, unless it’s to make it easier to keep the American people in the dark. Or unless you believe South Carolina Senator Tim Scott’s explanation that television cameras could catch the PIN numbers of senators at the Senate ATMs. (That’s actually true. Scott’s PIN is 4267. Go try it.)

It’s all so absurd.

Even Tennessee Senator Bob Corker acknowledged that the optics weren’t great: “I understand, in tandem, that it’s maybe not so good” to restrict press access while health care is drafted privately. Ya think, Senator? What a profile in courage.

Meanwhile, as Republicans were behind closed doors creating a bill that will reportedly take away health care for 23 million Americans, greatly restrict and reduce Medicare and Medicaid benefits, put lifetime caps on insurance company pay-outs, and provide huge tax breaks for the rich, the White House began denying reporters the ability to use cameras or recording devices in certain press conferences.

Listen, folks, when our government officials start restricting the press, it’s for a reason: They don’t want you to know what they’re doing. They want to have deniability. If interviews and press conferences aren’t recorded, it’s much easier to claim you were misquoted by the Fake Media™. It’s much easier to claim, as Attorney Jeff Sessions did approximately 6,724 times in his Senate N E WS & O P I N I O N testimony last week: “I do not recall NY TIMES CROSSWORD - 4 …” The reason he didn’t flatly state, THE FLY-BY - 5 “I didn’t do that …” is that he knows POLITICS - 7 there may be recorded evidence that EDITORIAL - 8 will counter his conveniently faulty VIEWPOINT - 9 memory.

WREG news reporter Luke Jones looks into the camera and tells Memphis’ would-be muggers how it’s supposed to be done.

“Normally, if you’re out to rob someone and don’t have a gun, you might use one of these,” he said, brandishing a wicked-looking lock blade knife. Jones used the sharp, shiny visual aid to illustrate the story of Fred Hobson, who was “robbed at swordpoint” by two men in front of the Brown Jug liquor store on Summer.

Governor asks for fed help, Gannett still hasn’t paid up, & Johnny Cash heads to Midtown.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam asked President Donald Trump last week to declare a major disaster in the state of Tennessee.

The move would open the door for disaster funds to flow here.

GAN N ETT “S HAM E F U L” O N S EVE R AN C E The Memphis Newspaper Guild said Monday it is still trying to get Gannett Co., the new owner of The Commercial Appeal, to pay severance packages to 23 former employees.

Guild president Daniel Connolly said those employees have gone 63 days without severance and the Guild hung “shame on Gannett” posters around the newspaper office at 495 Union.

“In a word, the company’s behavior is shameful,” Connolly said.

M I LLI O N S PAI D FO R D O G B ITES Tennessee insurance companies paid close to $9.4 million on dog-bite claims last year, according to figures released by the state last week.

Last year, insurance companies here paid on more than 300 dog-bite claims, according to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. Nationwide, more than 18,000 dogbite claims were paid, totaling more than $600 million.

M E M P H I S B LU ES O P E N S A new community of manufactured rental-only mobile homes now stands on the site of a mobile home community destroyed by floodwaters in 2011.

The Memphis Blues community has replaced Memphis Mobile City on Thomas. The new community was formally opened last week, and tenants began moving in.

Memphis Blues has 25 homes installed now, and its leaders plan for 160 more. City officials mandated that all of those homes be built above the flood plain. Some of the homes can be rented for less than $800.

The lawsuit claimed that the Memphis Police Department (MPD) performed unlawful surveillance of the group’s events.

MPD denied any such unlawful behavior and agreed to appoint

a liaison to work directly with Fight for $15.

CAS H STATU E M OVES AH EAD A statue of Johnny Cash got one step closer to standing in Cooper-Young last week as a local non-profit organization secured a contract for the marker with artist Mike McCarthy.

Legacy Memphis Inc., the group pushing for the statue, said it recently completed a funding campaign for the project. The statue will be in the Cooper-Young neighborhood, but the exact location is still being determined.

MATA GAVE F R E E R I D ES The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) gave free rides last week during the 12th annual national “Dump the Pump” day.

The day is designed to encourage more people to “dump the gas pump” and opt to use public transportation instead of driving. MATA joined more than 100 local transportation systems around the country in the event touting the financial benefits of public transportation for individuals and the local economy.

G R O U N D F LO O R O P E N S ServiceMaster officials unveiled the Ground Floor, an innovation hub and business incubator that’s now open in the same space that once housed Tower Records in the Peabody Place mall.

ServiceMaster, the Memphis-based home services company, is expected to complete its move into the building in the first quarter of 2018.

A new group focuses on clean drinking water in Memphis.

For the past five months, a group has gathered at Laurel Cannito’s East Memphis home on Friday evenings. Not for a movie night or board games, but for a dialogue on clean drinking water in Memphis.

Cannito is a member of Clean Water Memphis, a new group that hosts the meetings, which are created for collaboration and education on issues that threaten the city’s drinking water.

Though many stand by the idea that Memphis has great drinking water, says Cannito, there are factors that most people are unaware of that could compromise the integrity of the water. Many of these factors occur before the water even leaves the aquifer.

For example, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has plans to start drilling into the aquifer, pumping up to 3.5 million gallons of clean water a day to cool a new energy plant. Cannito said this “irresponsible drilling” can harm the quality of the water.

Another major concern of the group is the Diamond Pipeline, an oil pipeline being built over the aquifer by a group that Cannito said has a record of causing spills. If spills happen over vulnerable spots in the aquifer, it could ruin the water, she said.

However, the water that Memphis, Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) pumps from the aquifer and to its customers comes from the bottom of the aquifer,

which, in most cases, has filtered for millions of years through layers of clay and sand, and is therefore very clean.

“It’s surprising because we hear that Memphis has the best drinking water,” Cannito said.

“And it mostly is great when it comes out of the aquifer, but when the water gets to us it may or may not have lead in it.”

Lead, which becomes a problem after the water leaves the aquifer, is present in pipes carrying water to some 30,000 homes in the city, according to MLGW. Fluoride is also added to the water, but Cannito said it exacerbates the lead problem.

Cannito said these issues are too much for Clean Water to tackle alone, so the group’s strategy is to defer to organizations whose work has already been carving away at the issues, like the Memphis & Shelby County Lead Safe Collaborative and MidSouth Citizens for Safe Drinking Water.

of any progress, and brainstorm solutions.

“Our job is just to get the word out,” Cannito said.

“There’s a real need for public education around these issues.”

Clean Water members began their educational efforts by creating and distributing easy-to-understand pamphlets that explained the main issues of the group’s focus.

Moving forward, Cannito says the group will try to enlist local small businesses to distribute information on clean water and eventually host presentations with Clean Water’s material.

Additionally, Clean Water will begin looking at unconventional spaces and ways to present their material, like with shows and live music.

“It’s not that easy to get involved with clean water activism in Memphis,” Cannito said. “We just want to make groups that are doing the work more accessible to everyone.”

Local disagreements on key issues reflect the national partisan divide. formal letter to the DOJ, which maintained that the court’s shortcomings — pinpointed in the DOJ investigation and subsequent MOU — have been rectified.

That claim drew negative reaction, much of it from local Democrats. One critic was state Representative Larry Miller, speaking as a panelist Monday morning at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Answering a question from the audience about legislative action on juvenile justice, Miller noted the county officials’ letter to the DOJ and took issue with it: “They’re saying, ‘We’ve done it. … We no longer need oversight.’” Disagreeing, Miller said, “We’re not there yet. The system is based on incarceration of young black men.”

A more reserved response came from former county Commissioner Sidney Chism, now an employee of the Sheriff ’s Department and a declared candidate in next year’s race for county mayor. Said Chism, evidently speaking on behalf of Sheriff Oldham: “He has taken the goals seriously and has worked

hard to achieve them, and I think he believes they have been achieved.”

Two legislators who were on Monday’s panel at the NCRM — state representatives Joe Towns and John DeBerry — commented afterward that the MOU should remain in effect but acknowledged, like Chism, that Luttrell, Michael, and Oldham seemed to have made good-faith efforts to raise the standards in effect at Juvenile Court.

But another nay vote came from 9th District Congressman Steve Cohen, who noted in a prepared statement that he had supported the original intervention by the Justice Department and said, “While progress has been made since 2012, there are still reports of race playing a factor in court hearings and reports of the juvenile detention facilities becoming more dangerous.”

As of Tuesday, Sessions had not formally responded to the officials’ request.

As partisan disagreements on pending legislative measures continued to dominate the Washington political scene, there were distinct local echoes.

Even as Democrats in Congress were trying to force open discussion of the Senate’s pending version of an Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill, now being prepared in private by an ad hoc group of Republican Senators, the party faithful across the state held press conferences last Friday protesting the GOP’s close-tothe-vest strategy.

In Memphis, the protest, led by London Lamar, president of the Tennessee Young Democrats and including state Representative Antonio Parkinson, was held in front of the Cliff Davis Federal Building downtown. The group’s call for open discussion of health-care legislation was directed not only at congressional Republicans but at Tennessee Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander and U.S. Rep. David Kustoff specifically.

Though the matter of the federal government’s current direct oversight of mandated improvements in the procedures of Shelby County’s Juvenile Court was not, per se, a partisan issue, local attitudes toward it have tended to cleave along party lines.

Such, at least, was the appearance of things after news accounts surfaced over the weekend detailing recent efforts by three county officials seeking an end to federal oversight of Shelby County Juvenile Court, the result of a 2012 Memorandum of Understanding between the county and the Department of Justice.

The officials — county Mayor Mark Luttrell, Sheriff Bill Oldham, and Juvenile Court Judge Dan Michael — were all elected under the Republican electoral banner.

The three officials discussed the matter of ending the federal oversight with Attorney General Jeff Sessions during his recent visit to Memphis. As attorney general, Sessions has taken a hard-line approach to law enforcement, focusing on what he sees as a need for more stringent enforcement and stricter penalties.

between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.”

Either definition is a fairly apt description of the current political climate in Washington, D.C. How else can one explain the follow-up last week to seemingly heartfelt proclamations of fraternity and comity from Republican and Democratic leaders in the wake of a madman’s ambush of GOP members practicing for an annual charity baseball game? Even as GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Minority Leader Charles Schumer stood side-by-side before the resultant game in their short sleeves pledging to maintain good relations and to drop the barriers to understanding, Schumer and other Democrats were begging in vain for a peek at the Obamacare replacement bill McConnell and a select group of other Republicans are writing in secret.

A week later, the Democrats still haven’t been afforded the merest glimpse of a measure that McConnell intends to bring to the floor for a vote before an even more revered annual circumstance, the 4th of July Congressional recess.

How’s that for comity and communication? Worsening the situation is the fact that, according to apparently reliable leaks from behind that curtain of secrecy, even President Trump, who is still desperately wanting to get something actually legislated

during his tenure, has rebuked the would-be framers of the bill for fashioning something “mean” and has implored them to come up with something that has a “heart.” Maybe something, we’d like to think, that does not strip 23 million Americans of their health insurance in order to provide the wealthiest one percent of the country’s populace with $8 billion in tax cuts?

As for Trump himself, who — eyes glued to teleprompter — delivered his own eloquent appeal for unity on game night, he was back to sending out divisive tweets the very next morning, attacking figures in his own administration for daring to pursue their duty in connection with the Russia investigation that he obviously fears will implicate him.

And night after night on the cable news shows, anchors and reporters do battle with spinmeisters who are repeating the same old, same old — talking points that we’ve already heard too many times, and “logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead.”

How does the rest of that song go — “White Rabbit”?

“When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go/ And you’ve just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low/ Go ask Alice, I think she’ll know …”

Better Alice than Sean Spicer or Sarah Huckabee Sanders. We’ve been paying attention long enough to know that “the white knight is talking backwards, and the red queen’s off with her head.”

So Alice will have to do, we suppose.

“Compromised” The OPC’s “solution” to the Greensward parking problem is a surrender to the Memphis Zoo.

I believe the zoo can be driven off the Greensward if enough citizens demand it.

Those who favor giving up the Greensward to the zoo without a fight are a symptom of a bigger problem. They are part of a long tradition of political behavior in which cowardly but power-hungry people position themselves as leaders, then bow to threats and intimidation, then sandbag and deflate the efforts of others, then reframe the outcome as a necessary compromise and a success.

I believe the zoo can be driven off the Greensward if enough citizens demand it.

Where zoo leaders park cars is their problem to solve — it is not the responsibility of citizens to provide funding or sacrifice parkland for a rich corporation that refuses to plan ahead. Zoo leaders claim to run a “world class” facility that is visited by a million people yearly. You cannot tell me those same people are mentally and financially incapable of devising ways to handle their traffic without paving parkland.

The Greensward fight is not over. Battle lines are now clearly drawn between those who think it’s fine to pave one-quarter of the Greensward and those who want to save it. I will continue to support CPOP and the citizens who remain committed to saving the entire Greensward, in the belief that it is priceless common ground that should be protected for everyone.

When the protests start again, which side of the zoo’s fence will you be on?

enjoy — including protests, letter-writing campaigns, lobbying for local and state legislation, and outright purchase and donation to state agencies. Before now, I have never seen a group of advocates come to the negotiating table in order to surrender to their aggressor. I have never seen a group of advocates willing to pay a million dollars to partly destroy the resource they ostensibly want to protect.

It is obvious that zoo leaders want as much of Overton Park as they can grab. In 1990, they fenced off more than 20 acres of old growth forest and destroyed four of those acres for the Teton Trek exhibit in 2008. Zoo leaders personally lobbied our city officials and Tennessee legislators to oppose CPOP’s campaign to create the Old Forest State Natural Area. And zoo leaders currently control public access to the northern three acres of the Greensward, due to the failure of OPC and city officials to defend this public land.

NEWS & OPINION

Mary Wilder’s June 15th Viewpoint column describes a great success story. Wilder lauds the million dollars recently raised by the Overton Park Conservancy (OPC) and says this money will “end parking on the Greensward forever.” The truth is buried a few paragraphs later: “This will result in the loss of some park land on the northern edge of the Greensward … ” This attempt to reinvent reality is very troubling to me and should be to anyone else who cares about preserving public land.

Wilder uses the words “compromise” and “solution” to justify her opinion that it’s fine to pave one-quarter of the Greensward and give it to the Memphis Zoo. According to the current “compromise” map on the OPC’s website, the northern three acres of the historic Overton Park Greensward would be paved and lost forever. There is no compromise here. This is nothing but a naked land grab by zoo leaders. Amazingly, zoo leaders have conned the public into paying half the cost of destroying our own parkland.

Wilder claims to speak for 19 civic groups known as the Overton Park Alliance. I expect many members of those groups would be shocked to realize they have been used to justify the destruction of one-quarter of the Greensward. How did this happen? Why are these groups so eager to surrender our city’s free open space to benefit corporate interests?

I only claim to speak for myself. I have been involved in more than a few land protection campaigns over the past four decades. In 1986, I was one of the founders of Save Shelby Farms Forest and helped write the legislation that created the Lucius Burch State Natural Area. I was one of the first board members of the Wolf River Conservancy (WRC) and helped establish the Ghost River canoe trail in 1989. In 1997, I became the first executive director of the WRC and helped protect thousands of acres of land along the Wolf including the Ghost River State Natural Area.

In 2008, I helped revive the Citizens to Preserve Overton Park (CPOP) volunteer group that saved Overton Park from being destroyed by Interstate 40 in 1971.

I supported the three-year-long CPOP campaign that created the Old Forest State Natural Area with unanimous approval from the Tennessee state legislature in 2010. Those 126 acres remain the only legally protected acres in the 342-acre Overton Park, which is why CPOP began their ongoing “Save the Greensward” campaign in 2014.

All of this is to say that I have witnessed and used a variety of tactics to protect green space for citizens to freely

From “Scent and Symbolism”

Brian Pera is an author, artist, and filmmaker. He’s also a perfume obsessive.

On Wednesday, June 28th, noon, he’ll be giving a talk titled “Perfume: Orchestrated Opulence” at the Dixon in conjunction with the gallery’s exhibit “Scent and Symbolism: Perfumed Objects and Images.”

Pera’s attachment to perfume goes way back. He remembers standing at his grandmother’s dresser as a kid, her perfumes collected on a tray of mirror glass with a filigree edge, hoping not to get caught. He then began his own collection in his 30s, but kept it secret.

Lately, though, Pera’s perfume predilection has become better known among his friends and acquaintances, which is why, he guesses, that the Dixon reached out to him. For his talk, he’s touching upon two perfumes per decade. And in an interactive flourish, he’ll be handing out scent strips.

Pera calls perfume “ambassadors of the past.” Smells bring back memories, a lot of them uncomfortable, like the lingering whiff of an ex-lover. He also posits that people can’t really smell of anything anymore. There’s policing of too-strong smells, perfumes are now neutered and smell of detergent.

Pera says his collection is large, but he won’t get into specifics. “I have more perfume than anybody in Memphis,” he says.

He will put on six at a time. Perfumes from Estee Lauder are among his favorite, just like his grandmother.

The first bubblePOP pop-up dance party debuted in February with an ’80s prom party. “It was so diverse,” says bubblePOP’s Kristi Ryan. “If you went to the prom in the ’80s or were born in the ’80s, it didn’t matter.”

And that’s sorta the point. Ryan was a kid in the ’90s. Her wife Bridget Wells was in college. Ryan’s ’90s is not the same as Wells’ ’90s. bubblePOP’s As If! A ’90s Party embraces it all — from the “MMMbop”-er to the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” disciple.

Ryan is a born-and-bred Memphian. She left for Austin and film school and then made her way to L.A. It was there she met Wells, and it was there she encountered a Back to the Future-themed dance party that featured guests in their ’50s prom best and seamlessly blended ’50s and ’80s music. When Ryan and Wells moved to Memphis, they thought the concept would translate well.

At the ’90s Party, L.A.-based DJ Vinay Shah of the Flashdance collective will be spinning records, and there will be TV and movie clips screened (think the O.J. chase, Clarissa Explains It All, Pete & Pete …). Guests, of course, are encouraged to don their fanciest chokers, platform shoes, juncos, and wife beaters. Should be hella fun.

Next up for bubblePOP is a Halloween party on October 28th, and they hope to start doing parties in public spaces in the style of Fourth Bluff. “Our goal,” says Ryan, “is to bring the community together on the dance floor.”

The Memphis Concrète Festival is making synthesizers weird again.

The Memphis Concrète Festival brings a weekend of strange synths to Crosstown Arts.

ust up the river from Memphis, in 1944, one of the first compositions known as musique concrète was presented, The Expression of Zaar, using manipulations of wire recordings to create an audio collage independent of the sources it was based on. The composer was Halim El-Dabh, and while he was closer to Memphis, Egypt, than the Bluff City, it’s somehow fitting that by the 21st century, his approach has gained a foothold in Tennessee. Nowadays, of course, synthesized sound permeates nearly every genre, but it generally owes more to the tradition of disco or synth pop. Yet the tradition of musique concrète lives on as well, and Memphians will get a heavy dose of it in this weekend’s Memphis Concrète Festival.

It may come as a surprise that most of the festival’s acts are local or regional.

While Tav Falco combined synthetic noise with rock-and-roll as early as 1979, a torch now carried forward by the NOTS, the textural (as opposed to melodic) use of synthesizers among locals has otherwise remained under the radar for most labels and media. But Robert Traxler, who organized the festival, found that once he began looking, an entire world of such artists emerged. “You start talking to people, and it kinda snowballs,” he said. “I’m hearing so much stuff that was completely new to me. And some of it just right here in town. You may not see them a lot, but you know there are more people out there than what you see firsthand. So a lot of my drive was to find people that are in fragmented scenes and bring them together.”

Traxler notes that, out of more than two-dozen acts, “the majority are from Memphis.” Even among these local acts, “the variety is pretty exciting. You have some ambient, drone, experimental dance music, noisier stuff, and some that’s more abstract. A lot of different artists representing different subgenres.” Among the Memphis acts, >manualcontrol< is arguably the best known and the most original, with a reputation for completely extemporaneous performances that solicit much audience participation. This is partly due to their unique human/machine interface, relying on light-activated audio processing rather than keyboards, which responds to both the performers and audience movement. Other locals range from Nonconnah, who purvey ambient textures using effects-laden guitars, to the beat-driven approach of Qemist. The

latter act is associated with Rare Nnudes, a homegrown label whose growing profile is another indicator of a more robust Memphis scene.

What surprised Traxler most was the variety of artists emerging from Mississippi, including the noise textures of Pas Moi and the edgy dance sound of Argiflex from Cleveland, Hattiesburg’s NEPTR and Division of Labor, Jackson’s Blanket Swimming, and Oxford’s Ben Ricketts, who is also known as a more traditional singer/songwriter. Beyond our neighbor to the south, look for artists from as close as Nashville and as far afield as Virginia. Pittsburgh’s snwv (pronounced “sine wave”) is notable for his generative, systems-based approach, which sets up sonic layers that interact according to loose parameters that evolve independently.

This “generative music” can also be experienced in one of the free exhibits that open each day of the festival. Saturday’s exhibit, called “You Are Standing in a Room,” involves a feedback system based on noises from the surrounding space, which processes and re-processes them into new sounds that gradually amplify the room’s particular overtones. Traxler

himself developed this for the festival, inspired by the work of experimental composer Alvin Lucier. Sunday’s free exhibit, “Hand–>Ear,” while not premised on any particular conceptual approach, will feature a theremin (the world’s first electronic instrument, invented in the 1920s) and various materials connected to microphones that patrons themselves can play and process with effects.

Finally, Saturday’s grand opening will include a screening of Forbidden Planet in its entirety, with the original score replaced with compositions by Traxler and other collaborators. While the original dialogue will remain in the mix, scenes without dialogue will be re-imagined with the new music performed in real time. All in all, it promises to be a unique event for Memphis: an ambitious weekend of experiments for the aurally adventurous.

The Memphis Concrète Festival takes place Saturday, June 24th, and Sunday, June 25th, at Crosstown Arts, 430 N. Cleveland.

Artists perform 7 p.m. ’til midnight on Saturday, and 5 p.m. ’til 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. Forbidden Planet will be presented with a live soundtrack from 5 p.m. ’til 7 p.m. on Saturday. Free exhibits are open from 2:45 ’til 4:30 p.m. on both days.

remember the exhilaration that came with the snap of the match head on the striking surface and the first whiff of sulfur. I remember the thrill as the flame attached itself to a small pile of leaves and twigs and then spread to the larger pieces of kindling my friends and I had pulled from the very clubhouse we sat in. The smoke was mesmerizing, and then it seemed too much. And then there was the shouting of my mother from the back door and her voice coming closer. The look on her face is probably what I remember most and the clenching of my stomach later that night when she made me recount what I’d done to my father.

We’ve all done it — played with fire — or something equally thrilling and frightening. First kiss. First drink. First puff. Rites of passage. It’s the dawning of the unknown, a corner turned abruptly from childhood to adulthood.

It’s a moment in time, this transition, and it’s one captured in Frank Murtaugh’s debut novel Trey’s Company from Jackson, Mississippi-based publisher Sartoris Literary Group.

Trey Milligan is 13 years old in the summer of 1982, three months that will change him and his world irrevocably. He and his little sister Libby have a tradition of the season spent with their widowed grandmother outside Cleveland, Tennessee, far from their parents in California.

The Milligans have traveled around; the parents, who remain distant and unseen throughout the story, are professional academics. But Trey feels most at home among the gently rolling hills of his grandmother’s neighborhood with its meandering creek, adjacent trailer park, and driveway basketball hoops.

It’s the home of some of his dearest friends as well — Devon, Larry, Arline, and Wendy. Wendy. We all have that someone in our lives who lit a fire in our hearts for the first time and changed who we are for good, and for young Trey Milligan, that someone is Wendy.

To understand Frank Murtaugh, the man, is to know that he moves through his days with his very own Holy Trinity: family, baseball, KISS. And Murtaugh the novelist clearly had this trinity at his elbow as he wrote Trey’s Company. The warm nostalgia of family and a ballgame on the television are folded into every chapter; the ideals of Americana, just a neighboring porch away in Gran’s neighborhood.

Baseball is a constant with Trey — his team, as is his creator’s, is the St. Louis Cardinals — and he collects rookie cards

and spends hours pitching a rubber ball to himself off the backyard deck (a baseball stadium of his own imagining). He and Libby visit Gran’s sister in her retirement home, the very idea a nightmare for some kids, but the Milligan siblings adore all contact with family, even when that family is a racist uncle who has a way with horses.

So there is Murtaugh’s trinity save for KISS. While the theatrical hard-rock quartet doesn’t make an appearance in the novel, the shadowy evil their shows portend does as the author rains hellfire (and actual fire) down upon his characters. The summer of 1982 is the axis upon which life turns, and it is through loss and fear and death that Murtaugh evokes the change of season for Trey, his Everyboy.

Heaped upon a first kiss, a first date, and the milestone of glimpsing an older woman in bra and panties, there is the unknowable loss of someone close and a brush with tragedy and the law that shakes this 13-year-old to the core.

In the end, we wish Trey’s childhood could go on indefinitely, just as we wish all childhood might. If not an actual stunting of age, then the innocence that accompanies those magical years. A time when we might not know of death so close, of racist uncles, of fear and pedophiles and the heat from the fire of adulthood.

If that Peter Pan wish can’t come true, then we’ll wish to travel those rolling neighborhood streets with friends who will help see us through. “Choose the people you let in, Trey,” Geraldine, the ice cream lady and neighborhood sage, says.

“Choose them very carefully. They’ll help you pave your path.”

inawat Klaimongkol-Gai likes being a foodie ambassador in Memphis.

He was the first to offer a selection of ramen in Memphis at Skewer, which was near the Clark Tower.

When he found himself without a job after Skewer closed, he did a little traveling. What he noticed was a phenomenon in the form of fresh fish cubed and served over rice in bowls.

“Poke is everywhere now,” Klaimongkol, or Gai, as he is called, says. “It’s in all the big cities — New York, Chicago, L.A., Austin. But not here.”

Now there is, thanks to ambassador Gai. In mid-June, Gai opened Ono Poke at 3145 Poplar across from East High school.

Poke is a fish salad that originated in Hawaii before Hawaii was a state and has become popular among the surfing crowd as a protein-laden pick-me-up between surf sessions.

“A lot of different kinds of Asian people lived in Hawaii long before World War II, including Japanese, Filipino, and they all combine their food into unique dishes,” Gai says.

Gai’s menu works mostly in two forms — house bowls and build-your-own.

The house bowls include such concoctions as the Pele Bowl, the Big Wave, and the Buddha Bowl.

The Pele comes with tuna and crab stick, jicama, edamame, cucumber, jalapeño, carrot, and spicy Pele sauce. The Big Wave serves up salmon and crab stick, fresh greens, corn, seaweed salad, pineapple, tomato, and Yuzu Delight sauce — a sort of Japanese citrus sauce. And the Buddha Bowl is for all the vegetarians out there (holla!), with tofu, fresh greens, edamame, broccoli, tomato, jicama, and wasabi sauce.

All of his sauces are homemade, and all dishes come on either white or brown rice, buckwheat noodle, greens, or a mixture of two. All bowls come with a choice of toppings,

So far, so good for Ono Poke.

“Everybody is enjoying trying all the different kinds,” Gai says. “The menu is not fixed.

It will be flexible according to what’s in season and what I can get my hands on.

“I like new things, and I like Memphis,” he added.

THE DISH The Rojas are the couple, along with Esthela’s brother and sister-in-law Cesar and Margaret Villalpando, behind the new restaurant and tequila bar Agavos Cocina and Tequila.

“We had been looking at opening another restaurant,” Esthela says. “We were going to try to do both restaurants, but when Cookout bought the building, we just decided to close and make this a different concept.”

The concept is to offer homemade dishes using their grandmothers’ recipes served in an unexpected and very pleasant presentation.

“It’s a little more fine dining, a little more upscale,” Alex says.

So far, their No. 1 seller is the Tequila Shrimp — six jumbo shrimp served with a special tequila lime sauce along with a side and rice, lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream ($14.50).

They also fix a lot of hamburgers, the Agavoburger to be more precise — ground beef mixed with chorizo, served with onions, fried jalapeño, bacon, and chipotle mayo ($9.50).

They have quite the selection of tequilas and margaritas. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can sip on a 1942 Don Julio or Herradura Anejo or just a regular silver tequila along with just about everything in between, with close to three-dozen types of specialty tequilas to choose from.

And their menu boasts about 10 different signature margaritas, including the most popular choice of mango.

The Rojas and the Villalpandos will be adding more items to the menu soon, including those enchiladas we were just talking about, and pretty soon you can expect to see karaoke on the calendar as well as a Latino night with DJ Moi. But don’t expect to recognize the place. They changed it up quite dramatically from its previous incarnation with a curved wooden bar reminiscent of tequila barrels, painted walls, and colorful decorations evoking the colors of Mexico — “red for the harvest, blue for agavo, and green for when the plant is growing,” says Esthela — as well as a beautiful mural of a blue agavos plantation on the north wall.

“We use fresh ingredients every day,” Margaret says. “All of our food is homemade using our grandma’s recipe.”

tequilas. And O’Brien’s Crazy Rita — which I first tried during a pop-up liquor store tasting hosted by O’Brien himself — is not too tart, not too sweet. Unlike some margarita mixes, it’s made with cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Calorie-wise, it comes in at 80 per cocktail, which is better than most mixers. Plus, O’Brien is a Memphian, a chef who turned lemons into, well, adult beverages by parlaying a burgeoning business selling seasonings and sauces at area farmers markets into a booming business by selling his wares at grocery and liquor stores. And trust me — it feels good to drink local.

Speaking of drinking local — Las Delicias gets my vote for best in town due to the fresh-squeezed lime juice that’s used in the recipe. I also like the frozen margaritas at Las Playita Mexicana out in Bartlett. The seven varieties of margaritas on the menu at Babalu in Overton Square might sound blasphemous to traditionalists, but the quality ingredients make up for the sass. I recommend the Tamarind Margarita, which combines Cazadores tequila, orange juice, the house sour mix (which is freshsqueezed), and tamarind extract to make a heady, thirst-quenching quaff.

The Champarita, a mix of sparkling wine, agave nectar, triple sec, and sour mix, tastes just as it sounds, like a lighter margarita or a margaritamimosa blend.

Many restaurants go wrong by using cheap tequila, hoping that the sour mix masks the taste. Or they use a sour mix laden with low-quality ingredients — corn syrup, shelf-stable lime juice, preservatives, and artificial additives — hoping that the tequila ratio might help drinkers overlook the wretchedness of the drink. Frozen margarita machines can get gunky and moldy if they’re not cleaned frequently. And, when it comes to a margarita on the rocks, drinks must be shaken, not stirred, to aerate the ingredients properly.

his week officially marks the beginning of summer, although, truth be told, it feels like we’re already a few months into the sultry weather season. The only upside to the uptick on the thermometer is that I can beat the heat with an ice-cold margarita.

It’s not that I don’t like to dally with daiquiris or that I never perk up with a piña colada, but I’m my father’s daughter, which means that margaritas are my jam. I like to drink them frozen, although my enthusiasm for the drink frequently leads to a massive “ice cream” headache, and I like to drink them on the rocks. I’ll mix them with the mid-priced José Cuervo, and I’ll mix them with Patron when I’m feeling rich, or Sauza when my pockets are bare.

Lately, my kitchen margaritas — best served after a soccer game, yard work, or just a hot day spent outdoors — are whipped up very simply: a jigger of my latest favorite, el Jimador tequila, in a shaker, along with four ounces of Jim O’Brien’s Crazy Rita margarita mix, ice, and a slice of lime. I shake it up, then strain the mix into an ice-filled old fashioned glass rimmed with lime juice and kosher salt. Honestly, I don’t even bother with triple sec, although I have a bottle languishing on my dining room bar cart just a few yards away.

Double-distilled and made with 100 percent agave, there’s a crispness to el Jimador, which comes from the western Mexican state of Jalisco, that I prefer to other

Shark Bait 47 Meters Down delivers cheap thrills on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

C

onflicted as to whether or not to see 47 Meters Down? You gotta ask yourself, “What do I want from my shark movie?”

This is not to say that 47 Meters Down is a crappy movie. It’s no Jaws, but then again, neither is anything else. It’s a cheap shark movie that at least has the decency to keep the sharks mean and underwater and not have them become super-intelligent or fly through the air. Sharknado, I’m looking at you. It respects the audience’s intelligence enough to wear a fig leaf of reality so as not to openly offend our suspension of

disbelief — at least until it doesn’t.

Two sisters, Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) are on a beach vacation in Mexico. The trip began as a girls’ outing, but Lisa’s expanding dark mood alerts her sister to something wrong. Seems Lisa’s boyfriend is moving out. Kate tries to cheer Lisa up by taking her out clubbing, where they meet a couple of guys, Louis (Yani Gellman) and Javier (Chris Johnson), who are hot to trot. The next day, the guys invite them to accompany them on a shark dive. Hoping to spark a palate-cleansing fling for Lisa, Kate pressures her sister into going along, even though it’s clear that the thought of being trapped in a cage under the Gulf of Mexico surrounded by sharks scares her to death.

Despite her horrible taste in corporate alt-rock, Lisa seems like a nice sort. Maybe shark diving isn’t for everyone, but Lisa bends to Kate’s pressure. After all, it’s a tourist thing, so it must be safe. And not only are Louis and Javier super-cute, but when they get to the dock, they discover the captain is Matthew

Captain Modine takes the aging trawler out of sight of land and illegally chums the water before sending the girls down for some sightseeing.

None of these are good ideas, but good ideas don’t get us to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, trapped in a broken cage, surrounded by hungry sharks. That’s where writer/director Johannes Roberts wants to go with his intrepid camera crew. The underwater photography is the highlight of 47 Meters Down. It’s almost like Roberts watched Gravity and said, like a true B-movie auteur, “I can do that underwater, much cheaper, and also with sharks!”

FILM REVIEW By Chris McCoy Roberts pulls an “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” In that 1890 short story, Ambrose Bierce spins a tale of daring escape by a condemned Civil War soldier, only to reveal at the end that everything that has transpired was the dying hallucination of a hanged man. The “It’s all been a dream!” move is a direct betrayal of the trust the audience puts in a storyteller. Even for a movie dedicated to cheap thrills, it’s the cheapest trick of all. Judging from the collective groan that went up at the end of 47 Meters Down, audiences know when they’ve been had, and they don’t like it.

Cameron will tell you, shooting underwater is no joke. Moore and Holt seem game for anything and have to be commended for a pair of brave performances in what look like actual life-threatening conditions. The way to keep costs down in these movies is to limit their scope, and Roberts and crew wring out every last dramatic situation they can think of that involves two women on the bottom of the ocean.

Which brings us to 47 Meters Down’s ultimate downfall. I’m about to spoil the ending, so if you care about such things, stop reading now and just go see the stupid shark movie.

After coasting along for an hour or so of fairly impressive shark-related jump scares, 47 Meters Down commits what is, to my mind, the deadliest narrative sin. Writer/director Johannes

Hello, young ’uns. It’s your old Uncle Randy back again with another story about life in these United States.

It was the spring of ’73. I was in my mid-20s and, for some bizarre reason, decided I needed to move out of the city and experience pastoral life. Big mistake. I found a rental house near the entrance to Shelby Forest State Park, about a half-mile down the roadway from Reverend Al Green. It got boring and lonely in a hurry. I had a little .22 caliber rifle out there, and since there was nothing to do, I became such a good shot, I could shoot the “D” out of a Dr. Pepper can at 30 feet.

I was also a member of a band that had a regular gig at the Admiral Benbow Inn by the airport. Curiously, they called their airport lounge the Club Car and insisted the band assume a railroad-related name. We settled on the Breakmen in honor of the Singing Brakeman Jimmie Rodgers of Meridian, Mississippi, but we purposely misspelled it as an act of rebellion and because we enjoyed taking breaks.

Five nights a week, I commuted from Shelby Forest to the airport and back. The Club Car was full of itinerant strangers and drunk, horny traveling salesmen. Once, after I had sung what I thought was a stellar version of a Dave Mason song, a slurring voice from the crowd shouted, “Hey, twerp. Why don’t you play something we might enjoy?” I left the city to find some peace, and I was catching hell instead. In truth, I was going crazy. Richard Nixon had been trying to kill me.

It was a weird time as well. The Vietnam War, the defining event of my generation, was winding down after Nixon and his fellow war criminal Henry Kissinger screamed “bombs away” on the nations of Cambodia and Laos. In the vacuum created by the Americans’ departure, homicidal dictators emerged, ultimately causing millions of casualties.

On March 29th, the last American troops left Vietnam. The most divisive conflict since the Civil War had caused millions of people to take to the streets in massive antiwar protests and, in some cases, receive bloody repression from the police. Suddenly, this immoral war was over, and everybody just quietly faded back into the woodwork and went about their business as if there were nothing more to say.

South Africa had a Truth and Reconciliation Commission after apartheid ended to expose the country’s worst human rights abuses and restore confidence in the government. Everybody in the U.S. just went fishing. We never reconciled our differences over the Vietnam War, which is the bedrock of our divisions today.

Nixon was the first president to intentionally polarize the nation for political purposes. The long-held rumor that Nixon caused the collapse of the 1968 Paris Peace Talks, telling agents of the South Vietnamese that they would get a better deal after his election, has been confirmed. Under his watch, an additional 20,000 American soldiers and countless Vietnamese died, proving him to be a vile liar, a soulless gargoyle of paranoia, and a proven traitor. His reward was reelection by a landslide.

But something happened on the way to the coronation. In June of 1972, five men were busted breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Hotel, which opened a Pandora’s Box of break-ins, thefts, illegal wiretapping, slush funds, cover-ups, incriminating private tapes, and a personal enemies list of the president’s critics who were marked for retaliation by the IRS. It was then that the public awakened and demanded an investigation. Televised hearings of the Senate Select Committee’s investigation into Watergate and related matters began on May 17, 1973, and suddenly there was must-see TV and my tedious summer in the woods became fascinating. If you thought the O.J. trial was riveting, you should have seen the Watergate hearings. I watched the whole thing.

One week after the hearings began, a special prosecutor was named. Nixon fired him, only to have him replaced by an equally zealous seeker of truth. After a parade of despicable witnesses and 250 hours of testimony, the indictments began flying, and the truth of Nixon’s treachery was fully exposed. He was impeached on charges of obstructing justice, abuse of power, and interference with the impeachment process. He resigned in eternal disgrace to avoid being forcefully evicted from the White House.

Anything beginning to sound familiar here? It took Nixon nearly six years to self-immolate; Donald Trump has accomplished it in less than six months. You know that saying that those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it? Trump is supremely ignorant of history and, thus, is as doomed as Nixon. Trump’s blatant criminality is in legal hands now and subject to the law rather than the whims of Congress. The only question remaining is whether he’ll fight it or quit. My money’s on the latter. The Watergate affair caused 40 government officials to either be indicted or sent to prison, including the U.S. attorney general, Nixon’s key advisors, and his legal counsel.

Trump’s in Nixon territory now. It will be a rerun of the 1973 summer of televised hearings and will get yuuuge ratings, better than House of Cards. Following Nixon’s resignation, appointed President Gerald Ford said, “Never again must Americans allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to bypass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election.”
