LETTER FROM THE EDITOR • OUR 1422ND ISSUE 05.26.2016 The news out of Nashville last week was mostly about Governor Bill Haslam’s unique “leadership” style, in which he furrows his brow and expresses concern about the validity or constitutionality of the cockamamie bills that the legislature sends to his desk, then allows them to pass without his signature. He’s really more of a hall monitor than a governor, at this point. In fact, if Draymond Green kicked Haslam in the groin, odds are good that the governor woundn’t even notice.

I am, however, hearing from informed sources that Haslam will probably sign into law this week a bill making “the waffle” the official state pastry. Unless someone objects, of course.

In other state news, Senator Bob Corker met with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump in Trump Tower to discuss foreign relations or … something. Speculation was that Corker was being vetted as a possible vice presidential candidate, though Corker downplayed that possibility after the meeting. As well he should, if he has any sense at all.

A Trump-Corker ticket would be similar to the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket of 2008: a respected senator paired with a lunatic, only this time the lunatic will be at the top of the ticket. McCain’s reputation was permanently damaged by his association with Caribou Barbie. He went from being perceived as a relatively reasonable and honorable man to someone who sold his integrity to attract the Tea Party fringe — someone who was willing to put a mentally unstable moron a heartbeat away from the presidency for political expediency. Now, McCain will be hard-pressed to retain his Senate seat, if the latest polling from Arizona is to be believed.

Corker is probably savvy enough to realize that it’s one thing to voice pro forma support for the GOP ticket in the name of party unity, but quite another to become one of the two primary party standard-bearers with a nominee as volatile and flawed as Trump.

Whoever signs on to lift hands with The Donald at the convention will be indelibly linked to what will no doubt become the sleaziest, ugliest, and most ignorant presidential campaign in modern U.S. history. The person who agrees to be Trump’s running mate must commit to supporting whatever impulsive and contradictory nonsense comes out of Trump’s mouth — or appears on his Twitter account.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie may be the leading candidate, having already sold his soul a few weeks back. This week, Trump repaid his puffy sidekick by joking that they would begin denying him tacos. Others on the Trump short bus include Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, and Ben Carson. Vice President Gingrich, anyone?

Trump did gain the endorsement of the National Rifle Association this week, N E WS & O P I N I O N so he’s got that going for him. The economic impact of the Memphis Zoo seems to be wildly overstated. The lack of empirical data and the multitude of assumptions leave the results of the study questionable. The tens of millions of tax dollars poured into the zoo have resulted in a shortage of dollars for other projects which would benefit Memphians. The zoo must begin to show a profit. If that is not possible given the current management structure, new managers are required. We must not continue to fund year after year deficits to the detriment of every other park program.

Suggesting that it has a multiplicative effect as it works through the Memphis economy is pretty standard in economic impact assessments. Questions about the amount of that multiplier we can leave to economists to argue over. Suggesting that it brings in additional business not seen in zoo revenues, since it is Memphis’ No. 1 tourist attraction, should be expected. Are we to believe everyone comes to the zoo, then goes and never does anything else?

The great majority of the out-of-Memphis visitors to the zoo come from West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and Arkansas.

They come to the zoo, buy McDonald’s for the kids, leave the wrappers on the Greensward where they park, and return home from the zoo with exhausted children.

This unfortunate promotional image teased the latest in a never-ending series of WMC reports about weaves, weave-related crime, and weaves that might be possessed by demon ghosts from foreign countries where people aren’t Christian. Sadly, we’re not making any of this up. This time, WMC’s senior weave correspondent Felicia Bolton used science — or a microscope anyway — to get to “the root” of the problem and determine whether or not products claiming to be made of 100 percent human hair are made from 100 percent human hair. The very serious two-part series was ultimately inconclusive.

Local groups inspect Mid-South Coliseum for possible renovation.

The Mid-South Coliseum’s structural challenges are “solvable and certainly not insurmountable,” according to some who have toured the shuttered facility last week. City officials will open the building up to preservationist groups next week.

The Coliseum has been in “full shut-down” since about 2006, meaning limited utilities and no heating or cooling.

The building was targeted for demolition last year in an overall plan that would have transformed the MidSouth Fairgrounds into a youth sports destination.

It seems that plan has been at least temporarily shelved as its main booster — former Housing and Community Development director Robert Lipscomb — was fired last year in the wake of a rape scandal.

But before that, two grassroots groups — the Coliseum Coalition and Save the Mid-South Coliseum — were fighting to save the building from the wrecking ball. They organized community members and hosted special events around the building to show its potential.

On Friday, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland announced he will allow citizen groups access to the Coliseum to evaluate the building’s potential for renovation. Those groups must bring with them qualified inspection experts like architects, engineers, or consultants specializing in sports and entertainment facilities, historic preservation, or those versed in the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

All of them must sign a waiver, releasing the city of all liability from any harm caused due to potential hazardous materials or conditions in and around the building. Those tours are offered for the five days between June 6th and 10th in four-hour blocks. Groups can do up to two tours per day.

One group has already toured the Coliseum. Last week, architect Charles “Chooch” Pickard led a team from brg3s architects, SSR Engineering, Code Solutions Group, the Memphis Center for Independent Living, and Restoration Clean to examine the building. Experts tested everything from the building’s plumbing system to its mold and air quality. The team was assembled by the Coliseum Coalition and Save the Mid-South Coliseum.

“I’m delighted that after spending three hours looking at all of the challenges, our team’s preliminary opinion was that the issues were solvable and certainly not insurmountable,” Pickard said. “When creative minds come together to create solutions to the challenges in old buildings, it often leads to a change in perception about the feasibility of renovating a historic structure.”

Still, city officials have not yet made a firm commitment to saving the building. However, the tours show they are willing to at least explore the idea.

Q&A with Naudia Vanelli Memphis Roller Derby player The traditionally all-female Memphis Roller Derby will now accept men into their growing grassroots league. While they won’t compete in public bouts, guys will skate at open league practices and scrimmage weekly with league members.

The roller derby is looking to grow its membership and compete for national attention after a recent year-long restructuring period.

The Flyer spoke with Naudia Vanelli (who becomes Vanelli Ice when she straps on her skates) about the new male rec league and how the men’s team could eventually take on a competitive life of its own. Vanelli joined Memphis Roller Derby in 2014 after refereeing for a team in South Bend, Indiana. — Joshua Cannon Flyer: For those who don’t know (I’m raising my hand), how is roller derby played?

Naudia Vanelli: Roller derby is played by two teams who field up to five players at a time. The game is broken up into two-minute “jams” of play. Each team has a scoring player, the jammer, and four blockers. It’s the blocker’s job to get their jammer through the pack and stop the opposing jammer from getting through. For each opposing blocker a jammer passes, he or she scores a point. It’s a unique game in that players are playing both offense and defense at the

same time.

Why did the league decide to include men?

The decision to include men was two-fold: We’re working on growing our member base as a league after a year of restructuring, and we really want to provide a space where both women and men in the Mid-South can learn how to play roller derby in a safe, inclusive environment. This was something that the league as a whole voted on.

FOREIGNER A look inside the Mid-South Coliseum building, too, carried a big price tag.

Bringing it to ADA compliance alone would cost $8.6 million, according to a 2009 study from OT Marshall Architects. After fixing the roof, flooring, kitchens, sprinklers, drywall, and everything else, the total cost to bring the building back to life was $32.8 million, according to the study.

The Urban Land Institue recommended the Coliseum be saved or “at least part of the structure or its shell [be saved] for reuse as an indoor facility with a larger outdoor stage,” the group said in a November study of the building and the Fairgrounds.

Plans for the Coliseum and the Fairgrounds remain in flux as a new mayor and nearly new Memphis City Council begin to put their stamps on city issues.

Also, a new grassroots organization — Friends of the Fairgrounds — are organizing efforts for civic input around the future of that massive space.

Doug McGowen, the city’s chief operating officer, said the Strickland administration have not yet committed to any plan for the Fairgrounds.

“We are reviewing the previous [Lipscomb] plan along with the [Urban Land Institue] recommendations before advancing any plan,” read a statement from Strickland’s office.

How many men is the Derby looking for?

As many as we can get. We’re hoping that eventually we can start a men’s league that will branch off from — but work closely with — Memphis Roller Derby.

Are there any pros and cons of forming a co-ed team or having men and women play together?

We had a co-ed mashup earlier this season with a team from Clarksville [the Red River Sirens], and the majority of our skaters had previously skated with men before we voted to allow men to join the league as rec skaters. The physicality of play between men and women is a little different, but the more different players we go up against, the more tools we have in our skater toolkits.

What steps would it take to form a competitive men’s team?

Memphis Roller Derby has traditionally been a women’s league, and we’re currently in our 10th season. There have been attempts made in the past to form a men’s team in Memphis, but due to numbers, it never took off. Once we get enough men in our rec league and they get ready to compete, they can start scheduling bouts with other co-ed or men’s teams.

Men will play as rec league skaters but not in public bouts. What does the rec league encompass?

Rec league could be classified as “derby lite.” Players in our rec league can skate at all practices that are not closed to specific teams, and they can scrimmage weekly with the league. Active, team-placed players have to make minimum skate and service hours each month to be eligible to bout, but that’s not something rec league skaters have to worry about. Not only is rec league for men, it’s for women who want to learn how to play roller derby but can’t make the time commitment that being an active skater requires.

Although the main objective of the Tennessee Stories Project is to change the stigma around abortion, Ankney sees another benefit. When she was first considering an abortion, she couldn’t find any resources online to give her an idea of how she may feel after the procedure.

“I found Planned Parenthood’s website, no problem, but I couldn’t go online and find out if I’d be okay or what happens if my mom finds out two weeks before or if women of faith would think I was going to hell,” Ankney said. “Until it’s safe to talk

about it, you can go [to the website] and read about other people’s experiences. Nobody’s story is the same, but everybody is okay.

The thing about the stigma is that it pushes the idea that people aren’t okay [after an abortion], and our silence perpetuates that.”

Rachel Ankney lives in Memphis now, but she was an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Pittsburgh when she had her abortion. She is white and her boyfriend at the time was black, and as the couple made their way inside the clinic, protesters on the sidewalk hurled racial slurs at her boyfriend.

“I hate to be flippant about it, but my thoughts have always been, ‘Did you really think that strategy was going to work?’ It just shows me, adding to the reason I want to tell my story, [that] the people who are against us are not reasonable, they’re not rational, they’re not trying to help people. The reason that they are winning sometimes is because of our silence.”

Those words are from Ankney’s blog post on the new Tennessee Stories Project website, a joint project of Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) and Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee, as well as other community partners. The site, which officially launched this week, offers women across the state the chance to share their abortion stories in an effort to reduce the stigma around the procedure.

“One in three women will have an abortion in their lifetimes. That’s a lot of people, but not a lot of people are willing to share because of the stigma,” said Leah Ford, community engagement and advocacy coordinator with PPGMR. “We’re collecting stories and putting them onto the website just to say, ‘Here are people who have had abortions, and they’ve have a range of experiences, a range of feelings, and all of that is completely normal.’”

The stories are organized according to the Grand Divisions of Tennessee — West, Middle, and East — and each includes the storyteller’s first name and a photo (or photo illustration for those who prefer more anonymity). The storyteller has to either live in Tennessee now or have had an abortion in the state. Those, like Ankney, who live here but had abortions in other states are fine, too. As of press time, there were only four West Tennessee stories (including Rachel’s) out of 26 stories on the site, but Ford says they’ve got more in the pipeline.

“We have 10 to 15 more people who we’re in the process of interviewing now.

Some contacted us after seeing the website,” Ford said.

Once a person shares a story, the Memphis Planned Parenthood office stays in contact “to make sure our storytellers are really engaged through the process and empowered,” Ford said.

“We have opportunities to stay involved after [sharing a story], like hosting a book club to talk about reproductive stigma or workshops on sharing your

he firing of Coach Dave Joerger wasn’t a surprise to anyone who had been paying attention to the Grizzlies’ tumultuous 2015-16 season. That’s not to say that Joerger’s dismissal was entirely about him, or his behavior, but it was clear to all involved — especially by the final media availability of the season — that Joerger and the Grizzlies’ front office were headed toward some sort of divorce.

I won’t get into the specifics of that divorce here — what’s done is done, and Joerger is now comfortably ensconsed (complete with a $4 million salary) as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings. But with the Grizzlies’ coaching search still in full swing at the time of this writing, I think it’s important to talk about the three things the Grizzlies have to get right this summer.

Hire the Right Coach: Mike Conley is a free agent this summer, and hiring a coach for whom he would be comfortable playing is a big step toward retaining his services. In his final media availability, Conley talked about his desire to see a plan from the Grizzlies, given how much uncertainty faced the franchise, and that was before they’d fired Joerger. Hiring a coach Conley is happy with is a must.

By the same token, in basketball, your three best players determine the way you play. After this summer, Marc Gasol, Conley (assuming he re-signs), and Hypothetical Wing Free Agent (see below) will be the Grizzlies’ three best players, and that will require a fairly radical reconsideration of the way the Grizzlies play, and the role of some beloved players — Zach Randolph and Tony Allen — may have to be scrutinized. The right hire is a guy who can get Gasol and Conley to buy in to the direction he’s headed offensively — something Joerger was never able to do, as evidenced by the two player revolts against “the new offense” in 2013-14 and 2015-16. It’s a big task on a team with some (quietly) headstrong personalities. Hiring a coach who can handle it is imperative.

Re-sign Mike Conley: The odds are in the Grizzlies’ favor here. Conley’s never played anywhere else, is very close friends with Gasol (with whom Conley consulted before Gasol signed his $120M deal last summer), and the Grizzlies can offer him a longer contract

for more money than any other team.

Conley’s injury history and the mileage on his 29-year-old body are of concern at this point, and a five-year max deal is a gamble, but the Grizzlies don’t have many other options if they want to avoid rebuilding the team completely, and Conley will probably have a hard time turning down the extra $35-40 million that the Grizzlies can pay him.

The only way this goes wrong is if the Grizzlies don’t 1) hire a coach Conley approves of and 2) can’t convince him they have a plan for staying competitive while retooling around him and Gasol.

Sign the Right Hypothetical Wing Free Agent: This is the thing the Grizzlies have never done before that they have to do this summer: attract a free agent making more than the midlevel exception salary (that is, around $5 million per season). It’s no secret that the Rudy Gay/Tayshaun Prince/ Jeff Green transitions at the starting small forward spot didn’t do much to improve the team, and, if anything, they solidified Conley, Gasol, and Randolph as the team’s three best players and primary scoring options.

This summer is the Grizzlies’ chance to reconfigure around a (presumably re-signed) Conley and Gasol core.

This summer, they’ve got to do something, whether it’s bringing in Nic Batum from Charlotte, prying Evan Fournier away from Orlando, throwing a big contract at Kent Bazemore, or trying to create a new wing player from a supercomputer à la Weird Science. As Randolph and Allen age, it becomes less realistic to rely on them to contribute at a high level every night. This summer is the Grizzlies’ chance to reconfigure around a (presumably re-signed) Conley and Gasol core.

Achieving one of these challenges would make for a big summer for the Grizzlies, but they’ve got to do all three — and they’ve got to monitor Gasol’s recovery, make a draft pick, develop their younger players, and fill out the rest of a half-empty roster. It’s a challenge the Grizzlies’ decision makers have to meet if the team is going to remain competitive.

A characteristic of any political season — and a sure sign that one is under way for real — is the proliferation of public forums to which all candidates, of any and all persuasions, are invited. Given the length of most election-year rosters, the invitees to these events usually are given only a minute or two to introduce themselves and talk about their backgrounds and qualifications.

The time constraints are such that not much gets said about platforms, although at least a modicum of lip service is generally paid to the event sponsor and the nature of the audience attracted. During the last week a pair of forums — or cattle calls, as they are inelegantly called in polspeak — illustrated the principle.

One event, held Wednesday at the Spaghetti Warehouse downtown, was sponsored by Diversity Memphis, and the purpose implied in the organization’s name was paid proper homage in specific statements of the attending candidates, as well as by the fact that they ranged across the political spectrum.

An “open house” for legislative and congressional candidates held Monday of this week by the Sierra Club at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, generated statements of fealty to environmental concerns that ranged from the basic to the elaborate.

But, again, these all-candidate affairs do not function so much as opportunities to itemize platforms as they serve as a means of familiarizing audiences with just who is running and for what. In that sense, they are like job interviews, in which the brevity of a quick impression counts for much. That they are also opportunities for the candidates to size up the opposition is something of an ancillary benefit.

As a campaign year wears on, there are so many of these affairs that the audience consists almost entirely of candidates and their helpers. The participants at such events are speaking to each other, and this fact is often cited as a reason to lay off attending them by more cynical candidates.

Still, in most cases, there is a correlation of sorts between candidates’ participation in public forums and their ultimate success at the polls. And voters who look in on them get a chance to measure candidate versus candidate in key races.

One race of interest — one of few countywide contests on the forthcoming August 4th ballot (the others are de facto special elections involving judges) —

was prefigured at the Diversity Memphis affair with an appearance by Ed Stanton Jr., who seeks reelection as General Sessions Clerk.

Stanton, along with County Assessor Cheyenne Johnson, has been one of the few Democrats to defy the Republican winning streak in recent county elections, and he faces a GOP challenger this year, Richard Morton, a Probate Court employee, who also spoke at the Diversity affair. Ordinarily, Stanton’s incumbency would give him a decided advantage, but Democrats are concerned that the highly contested Republican primary for the 8th District congressional seat will draw a high percentage of GOP voters to the polls.

Another rivalry sure to loom large this year is that between incumbent District 30 state Senator Sara Kyle and her Democratic primary foe, former Senator Beverly Marrero. This is a grudge match of sorts.

Marrero previously held the District 30 seat but lost a reapportioned version of it to her then Senate colleague Jim Kyle, Sara’s husband, in 2010.

Complicating the rivalry is the fact that Marrero is a friend and ally of 9th District Congressman Steve Cohen, who was ever at loggerheads with Jim Kyle during their joint service in the state Senate.

Judicial canons forbid Jim Kyle’s taking part in his wife’s reelection race, and Cohen has opponents to worry about in his own contested reelection race, but the shadow of their pre-existing rivalry hangs over the District 30 race.

Sara Kyle and Marrero were in evidence at both the Diversity Memphis and Sierra Club forums, and they are liable to see much of each other the rest of the way.

and Shelby County. Just ask Roderick Ford, a sometime candidate who has never been elected to anything, although he has netted a few extra votes in a race or two from people who (mistakenly) assumed him to be a member of the long-established Ford political clan.

Or ask William Chism, a novice candidate whose 2014 win in the Democratic primary for Probate Court Clerk no doubt owed much to his last name, identical to that of non-relative Sidney Chism, wellknown political broker, former state senator, and, at the time, a prominent member of the Shelby County Commission.

Those were minor distractions that came to nothing much, bumps in the road compared to the more serious misunderstanding that could confront Democratic voters in state House District 85, where veteran state Representative Johnnie Turner has two primary opponents, one of whom bears a name long familiar within the councils of local public education.

This would be Keith Williams, whose candidacy is indeed focused on education.

Sort of. This Keith Williams — identified as a pastor, Memphis parent, and senior adviser for the “Tennessee Black Alliance for Educational Options” — testified to the General Assembly this past year in favor of state vouchers for use in private school.

That’s something that is pure anathema to another and much better-known Keith Williams (Keith O. Williams, more fully) who has served as both chairman and executive director of the Memphis/Shelby County Education Association and who is a vehement and vocal opponent of school vouchers. To compound the potential confusion, Keith Williams of the MEA ran unsuccessfully last year for the Memphis City Council, and the presence on this year’s election ballot of someone with the same name could be a real voter snag.

Turner, a former teacher and a decided opponent of school vouchers herself, says that Keith Williams of the MSCEA has pledged his support to her and will do what he can to clear up such voter confusion as might be.

We dealt briefly (and by no means definitively) with both the study and the reaction of critics who distrusted its conclusions that Greensward parking was not necessarily a bad thing.

The subject (which shows no signs of going away, in any case) reared itself again this week in remarks to a Rotary Club of Memphis luncheon at the University Club by former city councilman Shea Flinn, now senior vice president of the Greater Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce and, as described by chamber chair Carolyn Hardy, the man who “moves the needle” on economic opportunity incentives pushed by the chamber.

Flinn oversees the Chairman’s Circle, a public outreach group operated by the chamber, as well as a series of innovative projects he refers to as “moon missions.”

His approach to the Greensward question was somewhat inadvertent and came his way during the postaddress question-and-answer period, via an audience query regarding one of the aforesaid moon missions, this one designated as “Advancing Green Space.” Flinn was asked to comment on that mission in light of the current Greensward controversy.

Flinn made it clear that a) he was not advancing an official chamber position; and b) he was not bursting at

the seams with an urge to speak on the matter as a private citizen. In keeping with that caution, Flinn’s first response was to express optimism that, as a result of ongoing mediation efforts initiated by Mayor Jim Strickland, there would soon be found “an adequate solution” to the controversy. He then went further, suggesting that there was an obvious silver lining to the whole wrangle, “if we could step back from the passion and Facebook of it all.”

Flinn reminded his audience that, “20 years ago we actually celebrated the fact of zoo parking.” It was because, he added, at that time the Memphis Zoo and Overton Park had each lost much of their luster and were not attracting nearly as many local citizens and tourists.

What he was saying, in effect, was that there is a problem today only because both the zoo and the park have been upgraded to the point that there is green space worth fighting over.

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

We were struck by several of Flinn’s observations, including his warning that “the best intentions” do not necessarily lead to “the best process.” In any case, said Flinn, it would be “a mistake to see ‘green space’ as meaning only Overton Park.”

Regrettably, however, that is the one green space that most clearly needs to be protected, however the process unfolds.

Party Unity?

A Republican’s current choice is to lose with honor or be mocked by history.

Call him a womanizer, and he shrugs. Say he lies, and he lies by saying he doesn’t. Confront him with the truth, and he just perseveres, creating his own “truth.” [Trump] cannot be shamed.

Imagine a Republican National Convention’s dais stocked with some of the people who have already endorsed Trump — not just the feckless Chris Christie or the bizarre Sarah Palin, but such figures as the disgraced football player Richie Incognito, Hulk Hogan, and Teresa Giudice from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, a fresh alumna of the federal prison system.

A meeting of Trump supporters might have to be sanctioned by a pro wrestling promoter.

When I spotted that Republican official, I did not say what I initially wanted to. I wanted to say that we are taking names — “we” being the American people. We will remember who endorsed a man who took American politics lower than it has ever been, no doubt extracting promises of good behavior that later will be broken. Party unity will not wash. The GOP is going to lose, the only question is how — with some honor, or being deservedly mocked by history?

equivalent, stopping Hillary Clinton.

But what is the point of a party that attempts to unify around a candidate such as Trump? What then does the party stand for? Does the GOP endorse anti-Muslim bigotry? Shall the party have a plank about Mexican rapists or the physical attributes of women? If Trump is its nominee, will the party endorse what are certain to be misogynist and personal attacks on Clinton? (Trump’s campaign boasts he has the endorsement of Paula Jones and Juanita Broaddrick, both associated with Bill Clinton’s sexual rap sheet. This could get ugly.)

Trump’s message, we are incessantly told, is that the GOP has double-crossed its constituency with trade, immigration, and just about anything else you can name. But it will do the Republican Party no good to win back the aggrieved at the cost of everyone else — not to mention what is good for the country. A glance at Trump’s endorsees — check his web page — is an effective appetite suppressant.

The other day I spied a high Republican official walking on the street and called out his name. He stopped, hit his smile app, and exclaimed how glad he was to see me.

“What are you going to do about Trump?” I asked. He paused and then uttered the dreaded word: unity. “We have to have unity,” he said.

I got his message. He’s selling out. In the coming weeks, Republicans everywhere will be seeking unity by embracing their presumptive nominee, Donald Trump. They will be ignoring his utter lack of qualifications for the presidency, his harebrained schemes for controlling migration, his knack for insulting billions people at a time (Muslims, women, the disabled), his gaudy womanizing past, his lying, his exaggerating, his enthusiasm for torture, and his ingenious view of the Constitution as a lease that can be broken.

That paragraph, politically lethal if I were writing about someone else, encapsulates precisely why Trump is so hard to stop. He is, among other things, scandal-proof. At the moment, an army of journalists is scouring the land looking for whatever Trump has done that we might not yet know about. Trouble is, there is little that can be revealed. Call him a womanizer, and he shrugs. Say he lies, and he lies by saying he doesn’t. Confront him with the truth, as when he insisted on having seen nonexistant Muslim revelry in New Jersey following the September 11th attacks, and he just perseveres, creating his own “truth.” He cannot be shamed.

It’s trite to liken Trump to a Kardashian, but I shall do so anyway. What they have in common is the determination to outlast our moral or political revulsion.

Kim Kardashian hit the big time with a sex tape. Revolting? Yes. But forgotten?

Mostly. What lingers is the name.

It is similar with Trump. The shock of his statements — calling Mexican immigrants “rapists,” for instance — has worn off. The same with his insult to Megyn Kelly or his mocking of a disabled New York Times reporter. All that is now “old news,” blanched of its repellent ugliness by time: Oh, that’s just Trump. He’ll say anything. He doesn’t mean it.

Bit by bit, Trump will accumulate more endorsements. The motley crew that now surrounds him will be supplemented and upgraded by establishment names. They will use the same reasoning that Senator Lindsey Graham did last month when he endorsed Ted Cruz, whom he hates — a higher purpose. In Graham’s case, it was to stop Trump. With others, it will be this thing called party unity or, its functional

SHELL, YEAH! The Levitt Shell celebrates 80 years with a fantastic $2 million makeover.

ow many times did Memphis almost lose the Overton Park band shell? The Depression-era amphitheater, now called the Levitt Shell, was slated to become a parking garage in the 1970s, but that didn’t pan out. History repeated itself in the 1980s, when a parking lot was proposed. Plans for a $2 million walk-in theater were scrapped in the 1960s, when Memphis Concert Orchestra conductor Noel Gilbert — a former leader of the house orchestras for both WMC and WREC radio — successfully organized against the development.

Over the years the Shell experienced its share of disasters. It was flooded, stormbattered, and set on fire. It’s been riddled with toxic mold, covered in graffiti, occupied by hippies, and nearly buried underneath an interstate. By 2007, it was falling in on itself with repair costs estimated at more than $500,000.

So the city, which had given up on the historic performance venue long ago, declared the Shell a liability and shut it down. It reopened a year later, following significant renovations made possible by support from the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation.

And with that, after decades of nagging uncertainty, the stage where Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black performed their first professional concert as a warm-up act for country yodeler Slim Whitman was saved for good.

usician Steve Selvidge searches for the right word to describe how he feels about the Shell. “Grateful,” he says, finally.

“Especially as I get older. I’m so incredibly grateful for the Shell and for all the people who saved it. It’s such an important place — a family gathering place. And by family, I mean my blood family and also my family of musicians.”

Selvidge, who plays guitar with Sons of Mudboy, the Hold Steady, Big Ass Truck, and the Secret Service, grew up attending shows at the Shell. His dad, folk singer Sid Selvidge, also played the venue frequently by himself, and with Mud Boy and the Neutrons, a Memphis superband with Jim Dickinson on keys and Lee Baker on electric guitar. When the elder Selvidge passed in 2013, his memorial was held at the openair theater, where a video clip from the 1968 Country Blues Festival was projected on the wall.

“And there’s Dad at the Shell singing with Moloch,” Steve says. “He’s such a baby, standing and singing right there, exactly where I’ve stood and played so many times — on the stage where my daughter has seen me play, and loved it. On the same stage where my daughter’s about to have a ballet recital. That’s pretty incredible.”

Selvidge has a special connection, but he’s not the only person able to measure out his family history in visits to the Shell.

The venue was built in 1936 by the city of Memphis, in conjunction with President Franklin Roosevelt’s Work Progress Administration. Described as “a pledge to the future of music in Memphis,” it opened with a heavily attended concert under the stars.

standing, and only three remain in use. “It’s hard doing concerts outdoors,” Pitts says. “At some point our culture changed and everybody wanted to go inside. But this place, this Shell, became such a part of the bloodwork of Memphis, and people have always come out to support it.”

W

ell, almost always.

The Shell endured lean times in the 1980s, and might not have survived the decade if not for the tireless, sometimes single-handed efforts of an enthusiast named John Hanrahan. But Hanrahan died in a carpentry accident in 1985, while the theater’s fate was still up in the air. That year, 1985, was also the first year since its opening that the venue was completely dark, with no booked events.

Photographer, cinematographer, and longtime Shell advocate, David Leonard, describes Save Our Shell, Inc. — a ragtag coalition that kept the building standing and sporadically booked — as a big Irish wake for Hanrahan that never ended.

“John’s funeral was on a Friday,” he says. “We put a wreath on the stage, and a bunch of people gathered and started talking about what we could do for the Shell. By Sunday there was an article in The Commercial Appeal, and support was flowing in.

“The city had run out of ideas,” Leonard says, explaining how the building would have been leveled to create temporary parking for the 1987 “Ramses the Great” exhibit, if the ambitious prototype for Memphis’ Wonders series been installed at the Brooks Museum of Art, instead of at the Cook Convention Center, downtown.

Leonard and his Save Our Shell compatriots rolled up their sleeves and got busy fixing things. They kept the building booked and mostly operational for 18 years, with very little money, and nothing more than a handshake agreement from the Memphis Park commission.

“The city wouldn’t give us a real deal,” Leonard says. They wanted someone to step up, but hadn’t anticipated SOS’s eccentrics.

Also, Memphis was still paying debt service on the Mud Island Amphitheater, and any competitive threat — remote as it might be — was cause for concern.

Enthusiasm for the preservation effort waned as Save Our Shell entered its second decade, with no resolution in sight. “After a certain amount of time, it just started to feel like a fire sale,” Leonard says. “How long do we have to keep on saving it until it’s finally saved?”

As funds and physical support dried up, the last years of Save Our Shell were essentially sponsored by Memphis musicians. “We couldn’t pay anybody,” Leonard says. “But there was never any doubt we could keep putting on shows, continued on page 18

ince its rechristening seven summers ago, the Levitt Shell has produced 50 free concerts a year, showcasing a diverse slate of artists and genres. This season, following an extensive, $2.1 million makeover, it’s back with 50 more concerts and looking better than ever. The remaining portion of a $4 million fund-raising campaign goes toward insuring the model’s sustainability.

In spite of the work done in 2008, upgrades to the 80-year-old facility were inevitable and necessary.

Anne Pitts, Levitt Shell's executive director, says, “Before the first renovation, we went around to different businesses and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got this idea of taking the Shell and presenting a bunch of concerts, and we’re not going to charge anybody a dime.’ Well, everybody thought that idea sounded pretty insane so, consequently, funding was limited.”

The first renovation was just enough to stabilize the building and get the summer music series started. Basic sound and lighting was added, and dilapidated wooden benches were removed to create an open space where families could picnic.

“The sound system held up, but it was literally held together with duct tape,” Pitts says. “Lights that were state-of-the-art eight years ago have been discontinued, and you can’t even buy them on eBay. Couple that with a lack of infrastructure and electricity and plumbing that hasn’t been upgraded since the 1960s. That’s where we were when this all started.”

From drainage issues and cable management to spacious, tree-friendly decks and new restrooms, all the venue’s shortcomings were addressed in this year's makeover. There’s more vendor space, a loading dock for musicians, an expanded, puddle-free dance floor, towers for improved lighting options, and an all-new, site-specific sound system.

“Our old sound system had speakers that sat flat against the stage,” Pitts says. The vibration was problematic in a space already designed to be a natural acoustic powerhouse.

Worse, the sound was aimed directly at the peak of the hill and bounced into adjoining neighborhoods. The new system was assembled with the Shell’s unique needs in mind.

Instead of sitting on the ground, speakers are mounted on custom-bilt AV carts designed to throw sound to the back of the audience, not into backyards along Kenilworth.

“It’s a huge improvement,” Pitts says.

because people loved that place and wanted to play there.”

If musicians never stopped wanting to play the Shell, why was it so hard to stabilize the venue? As was the case with so many cities during that period, the urban core was becoming less dense as people and investment migrated to the suburbs.

“There was also a kind of cultural backlash,” Leonard says, recalling a more turbulent period in the 1970s, when a chain-link fence surrounded the Shell, and music promoters took advantage of cheap rental fees to book big ticket bands like Black Sabbath, the Allman Brothers, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, the James Gang, Deep Purple, and the Marshall Tucker Band. “Nobody was going to let anything like that happen again,” he says. “And they didn’t.”

“C

hrist, I guess it must have been 1972?” Puppeteer and percussion wizard Jimmy Crosthwait can’t quite remember what year it was when he built the 10-foot-tall puppet to introduce ZZ Top and “One Toke Over the Line” duo Brewer & Shipley at the Shell. He remembers that the latter group was pissed off because he made a remark about Nixon and Agnew, and suspects it went down not long after Memphis legalized liquor by the drink, and somewhere near the beginning of what he calls his 16-year weekend. “It was a wild time,” he says.

Crosthwait first visited the Shell in 1963, when he dropped in on a 20-act hootenanny his friend Jim Dickinson had organized. “It was like a folk festival. And that’s where I saw Sid Selvidge and Horace Hull doing a kind of bluegrass thing,” he says. “Sid played guitar and Horace played banjo, and they sang these haunting harmonies like two guys returning from the Civil War. It made a huge impression on me.”

Shortly thereafter, Crosthwait, a blossoming avant-garde percussionist who’d been banging on garbage cans with homemade mallets, took up the washboard and joined forces with Dickinson and Selvidge in a jug band-inspired outfit called the New Beale Street Sheiks — a precursor of Mud Boy and the Neutrons. He also became a regular fixture at the Shell, where he emceed the landmark 1968 Country Blues Festival, an event that attracted the attention of Sire Records, the Goodyear Blimp, and eventually, the city of Memphis.

“We were hoping the festival would get some kind of support from the city,” Crosthwait says. “And support was in no way forthcoming.” Institutional Memphis has often had a hard time understanding the value of Memphis’ musical heritage and its heritage sites.

Civic leaders had no idea what to make of the hippies producing mixed-race blues concerts in Midtown.

“Well,” Crosthwait adds, “they weren’t interested, until they realized the Goodyear Blimp was going to be there. Oh, and that PBS was filming. When they found that out, they immediately sent someone down with a big Memphis Chamber of Commerce banner and hung it on the wall.”

When Leonard describes the “cultural backlash,” he refers primarily to the ’70s and the Shell’s fenced-in period. But the roots of this particular conflict date back to the dawn of rock-and-roll and crescendo throughout the civil rights era.

The second Memphis Country Blues Festival was held July 20, 1968, three months after Martin Luther King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel. “We had a complete roster of black and white musicians and a complete audience of black and white people at the show,” Crosthwait says. Nationally, there was unrest, but not at the Blues Festival. “I didn’t really think about it until until years later. In its own way, that was a very special event, and an interesting unification of The Shell has seen a lot of changes through the years, but it’s better than ever this summer.

Memphis-connected filmmaker Augusta Palmer agrees. “These festivals had an amazing trajectory over a short period of time,” she says. “In 1967, it was put together on a wing and a prayer with almost no money. By 1969, there were two film crews shooting and multiple articles in Rolling Stone.”

Palmer recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowd-fund a documentary about the festival’s producing body, the Memphis Country Blues Society, of which her father, New York Times pop-music critic, and Deep Blues author Robert Palmer, was a founding member.

“Having these concerts at the Shell was really important, because it was in the heart of Memphis and it was open to anybody,” Augusta says, pointing out that a less-well-attended Ku Klux Klan rally was held at the Shell only a week before the first Country Blues Festival.

“It was a place to create this community that hadn’t really existed before,” she says. “It still feels aspirational to have people of all races together celebrating American culture. It happens sometimes, but it doesn’t happen all the time.” almer’s thoughts about the Blues Festivals mesh well with Pitts’ thoughts about the nature of outdoor spaces. “They make you more comfortable trying things you might not try otherwise,” she says, referring to the way concertgoers feel more comfortable sampling bands they’re not familiar with. “The barriers for entry are low.”

The online trailer for Palmer’s Kickstarter campaign features a vintage clip from a nationally aired PBS special hosted by actor, musician, and culture critic Steve Allen. It opens with Allen talking about a time in the early 1960s when young black and white men based in and around Memphis embarked on an effort to revive interest in regional blues traditions. “The result,” Allen concludes, “is a new, far out, modern Blues sound.”

Allen’s chair swivels about, and a curtain is pulled back to show a large space-age video screen and a tight closeup of, “The Band Shell in Overton Park.” It’s an impressive reveal, but not nearly as impressive as the improvements being unveiled this week.

“We feel like 80 years is a huge accomplishment,” Pitts says, acknowledging the anniversary. “But, right now, our focus is on getting to year 100 and making sure we’re ready for changes we may have to face.”

After living out of state for many years, former Collierville resident Kati Hoffman had an opportunity to relocate to West Tennessee. She and her husband considered returning to their old stomping ground but decided instead to take a house in the High Point Terrace neighborhood. On their first night back in town, friends invited the prodigal family to a Levitt Shell concert. “And that was it,” Hoffman says. “This was exactly the community we had been looking for.”

Shortly thereafter the Hoffman family moved closer to Overton Park and the Shell, where their 6-year-old daughter Thea has become a Thursday-Sunday regular.

“My favorite musicians are Dolly Parton and Cory Chisel,” Thea says, professing her love for the country music icon who hasn’t played the Shell and the Wisconsin folk rocker who has. She excitedly recounts the time she met Chisel when he was playing a set with his girlfriend Norah Jones. She’s a Sons of Mudboy fan, too, the band where Steve Selvidge and Crosthwait perform with Luther and Cody Dickinson, Paul Taylor, and others. But Chisel and Jones played the night Thea celebrated her birthday, so they won special places in the young audiophile’s heart.

Thea says she writes songs now, but wants to write better songs when she grows up.

She started going to Shell concerts when she was 2 and will be 26 when it celebrates its centennial in 2036. She doesn’t get mad, exactly, when she finds out there was a time before the Levitt Foundation intervened, when her favorite summertime haunt was neglected and in danger of going away. But her soft voice takes on a distinct edge and the passion comes out. “If it was torn down, I wouldn’t be inspired to play any music. Because when you go to the Shell, kids can be inspired and they can grow up and they can write songs. If it was gone there wouldn’t be any music. And music is what makes people happy and joyful. Yeah.”

Yeah.

The 2016 Levitt Shell season launches Thursday, June 2nd, with performances by the Beale Street Flippers and New Orleans hip-hop ensemble the Soul Rebels. Admission is free.

Light Work

Leonard’s Light

At 16, David Julian Leonard appeared in The Final Chapter: Walking Tall, a feature film about Buford Pusser, the West Tennessee sheriff famous for driving the State Line Mob out of McNairy County. Leonard played a reckless teen who boosts a car and, with the help of his two best friends, leads the neighboring county’s sheriff on a high-speed chase “through the weeds, through the woods, and through the ditches.” It might not have been the most auspicious way to launch a film career, but it was a start. Leonard would go on to work as a grip and lighting technician for notable directors like Milos Forman and Francis Ford Coppola. He directed the documentary film Why Elvis?, co-directed Big Star Live in Memphis, and served as cinematographer on several projects with Memphis writer and filmmaker Robert Gordon. But for all of the skills Leonard has developed over a lifetime working in the movies, he does his best work with a still camera.

On Friday, May 27th, Leonard is hosting a signing of his aptly named new book Tender Is the Light, a collection of 66 visually arresting photographs.

As a friend and sometimes protege of renowned photographer William Eggleston, Leonard’s developed an eye for extraordinary color and the ability to find exotic beauty in the most mundane locations. His reds are red as revenge; his yellows pop off the page. Leonard takes viewers behind church pulpits and into foggy neighborhoods. His camera turns baby dresses into clouds and introduces viewers to circus performers and children doing the things they do best.

Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. Tender Is the Light is a handsome collection produced and distributed by German publisher Kehrer Verlag. It’s bound in drab linen that changes color like a sharkskin suit. A picture of three little girls at a pink princess party may not be the most arresting image in the collection, but it prepares viewers for the artist’s playful mix of irony and drama. What lies within might easily be described as a slow-speed joyride all around the world.

By Susan Ellis On Saturday, it’s the debut of the 901Fest, which replaces the Sunset Symphony as Memphis in May’s season capper.

Susan Elliott, Memphis in May’s director of programming, says that after weeks of celebrating the honored country, the festival will bring the focus back on Memphis.

“We want to bring the world to Memphis, and Memphis to the world,” she says. As such, the festival will be all Memphis, from food to music to vendors.

Another goal was to get millennials involved, so they partnered with Choose901 in an open vote for bands they thought should perform at the festival. Many of those bands can be seen on the FanBank stage, one of four stages at the festival.

Among those set to perform are Zigadoo Moneyclips, the North Mississippi Allstars, Al Kapone, Opera Memphis, School of Rock, Frayser Boy, the Iris Orchestra, New Ballet Ensemble, and more.

Muddy’s, Wiseacre, El Mero, Reverb, Delta Blues Winery, Central BBQ, and many others will be serving up food.

The event will be preceded by the Great American River Run, which has attracted 2,000 runners from 33 states and three countries. Olympic bobsledder Sable Otey will lead the run stretching, there will be entertainment along the course and yoga for non-runners, and there may be an Elvis sighting or two.

The day will close in the best way possible: a Memphis-themed fireworks show.

“We’re excited,” Elliott says. “This is what the city said they want.”

Jimbo Mathus — Band of Storms EP (Big Legal Mess) Jimbo Mathus calls his latest EP a collection of cave paintings that turned into folk songs. The Oxford, Mississippi, guitarist is comfortable churning many different genres through his folk/boogierock filter, making for a relaxed yet confident batch of songs created in Bruce Watson’s Dial Back Sound studio.

Released just in time for summer, Band of Storms is definitely a party record, made for those who find joy in shot-gunning a beer or holding court while cooking in the backyard with a half dozen likeminded derelicts. There’s nothing serious on Band of Storms, and even the sadness on the song “Slow Down Sun” doesn’t take away from the party that Mathus has created with his laid-back approach to songwriting. While Band of Storms won’t be competing for record of the year in any major music poll, the EP is a testament to the Southern rock-and-roll being

celebrated by Fat Possum/Big Legal Mess and a glimpse into what happens when an artist is perfectly comfortable with recording whatever they want, whenever they want. — CS Favorite Track: “Slow Down Sun” Ryan Azada — Weird, But Cool (Self Release) Ryan Azada long stood behind the curtain. He booked bands at DIY spaces all over Memphis, pulling 70 to 80 hours a week at Crosstown Arts, and often hopped onto shows last minute with an acoustic guitar and songs that seemed like they would never get the studio treatment.

A proper release was overdue, but it’s a solid introduction.

Azada’s debut EP Weird, But Cool spans three tracks and barely hits the 10-minute mark, but he aptly uses his time to scratch the surface of deep-seated cynicism wrapped in oddball hope. Each song on Weird, But Cool is unique, which

is a feat for any musician who relies on an acoustic guitar as their backbone.

The OAM Network’s Gil Worth engineered two tracks on Weird, But Cool, “Madison & Cleveland” and “What I Want to Say,” live at the Pezz practice space. EP-opener “Return to Nothing” features guitarist Scott Scharinger of DADs, who Azada played bass for until they broke up. Azada’s band combines a cast of musicians woven into his life from previous endeavors. Julien Baker and Matt Gilliam of Forrister lend guitars and drums. Rebecca Flax, another musician from the Smith7 inner circle, plays bass.

Weird, But Cool captures well the humble and distant warmth that

embodies Azada’s live sets, and I hope a full length is forthcoming. — JC Favorite Track: “Madison & Cleveland” Evil Dead — Death by Electric Shock EP (Evil Dead Records) Long before Evil Army became the biggest name in the local metal scene, there was a group called Evil Dead.

Inspired by bands like the Misfits and the Reatards, Rob Wilkerson (aka Rob Evil) picked up his guitar and cranked out five tracks of primitive metal for an EP he would later dub Death by Electric Shock.

Sure, these songs are over a decade old at this point, but they serve as the blueprint

Those Pretty Wrongs — Self-titled (Burger Records) It’s inferred in the name Those Pretty Wrongs that an overarching positivity can be born out of loss and missed opportunities. The same unabashed optimism carries the band’s self-titled debut LP, a collaborative project between Big Star alum Jody Stephens and Luther Russell. Stephens and Russell’s 10-track album rests in the simplicity of earned perspective.

Maybe there’s no one more apt to speak on the topic than Stephens, the last living original member and drummer of a pioneer power-pop band (Big Star)

that never scratched Billboard’s Top 200 Albums list but wrote the textbook for wave after wave of rising bands.

On Those Pretty Wrongs, Stephens sings the majority of vocals for the first time in his storied career. The album blends soft, folk austerity with electric arrangements and clear melodies that characterized Big Star’s sound. Stephens’ and Russell’s harmonies are indistinguishable from those found on #1 Record.

The album was engineered by Mike Williams at Ardent Studios and mixed by Russell and Jason Hiller at Electrosound in Los Angeles, California. Each song is warm and open — not too polished, not overly produced, and raw as they should be.

Record highlights: “Mystery Trip,” which pays homage to Big Star’s “In the Street,” “The Cube,” a track about the lives of traveling circus performers, and the acoustic “Lucky Guy,” where Stephens sings, “You see it half empty, I see it half full, life can be a game of push and pull.”

Some musicians distance themselves from the efforts of their early career. On Those Pretty Wrongs, however, Russell and Stephens meet at a crossroads, utilizing their strengths to bridge the past and present and create endearing, meditative pop songs. — JC Favorite Track: “Mystery Trip”

The EP starts with the song “The Underworld,” and while that track is certainly worth the opening slot, the second and third songs — “Death by Electric Shock” and “Destroy the Enemy” — are the real winners here. Both songs showcase Wilkerson’s love of both garage rock and numbskull punk, and the riff on “Death by Electric Shock” is one of the most genre-bending songs any Memphis band from that era has created. This CD is only available at Evil Army shows, but well worth the money. — CS Favorite Track: “Destroy the Enemy”

MOTEL MIRRORS LIVE IN HARBOR TOWN The River Series at the Harbor Town Amphitheater concludes this Saturday with a performance from Motel Mirrors and Marcella & Her Lovers. Now in its second year, the $5 summer concert series put on by Goner Records has already become one of the best and most affordable musical experiences downtown, with Reigning Sound and NOTS both delivering killer sets to children, Harbor Town residents, and everyone in between. The Reigning Sound appearance in mid-May solidified the River Series as the best (and only?) place to experience live music outdoors in Harbor Town, and the poor folks working at Miss Cordelia’s grocery store felt the effects two Saturdays ago when the vendors ran out of beer before the headliners had even taken the stage.

Now it’s Motel Mirrors’ turn to rock on the river. Formed by Amy LaVere, Will Sexton, and John Paul Keith, Motel Mirrors should be more than up to the challenge, as each member’s resume (including drummer Shawn Zorn) is chock-full of memorable performances both in Memphis and abroad. Motel Mirrors recently debuted a new song from their forthcoming sophomore album on the PBS show Sun Studio Sessions, and the track follows in the same vein as their acclaimed debut LP, which means you’ll probably dig it.

Opening the show is Marcella & Her Lovers, a band that was made for serving as the soundtrack for sunsets on the mighty Mississippi. Marcella is still performing all over the city, and her residency at the Zebra Lounge is one of the highlights of the week for the Overton Square piano bar. Where You Been?

Returning to the scene: Richard Russo’s Everybody’s Fool.

F

or me in my early 20s, there was no better place to be than on a bar stool next to one of Richard Russo’s characters. Or in a diner swilling thick, black coffee while looking over the daily racing form. Of course, that bar stool and booth are purely metaphorical, but I spent so much time reading Russo’s prose at that age that I feel as though I know his characters — Wild Bill, Harry Saunders, Sam Hall, Sully, Rub —intimately.

It’s why I got so excited when I learned that there would be a sequel to his 1993 novel Nobody’s Fool (Random House). Many may know the story from the film adaptation starring Paul Newman, Jessica Tandy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman (you can see here why a sequel will be impossible to pull off ).

With the bulk of the story taking place over 48 hours, and with a healthy dose of digression and flashback, Everybody’s Fool (Knopf ) picks up years after the action in Nobody’s Fool. Russo is a master at creating a sense of place and sets his saga again in the familiar North Bath of upstate New York — his Yoknapatawpha County, his Winesburg, Ohio. The lovable and unlucky Sully has had a change in fortune, his finances having risen with the tide, while his friendly adversary Carl Roebuck’s luck is on the skids. A character late in the book seems to speak for these two, and all the snakebit citizens of Bath: “You ever wonder how come some people have all the luck?”

Her partner thinks to himself, “ … that was like wondering why the sky was blue. It just was.”

A side character in Nobody’s Fool, police officer Douglas Raymer, takes a

turn at leading man and antihero in Everybody’s Fool.

Last seen being dressed down by his superiors for discharging his service revolver on a residential street (at Sully, no less), he is now chief of police for Bath. It’s his plight as much as any of the other characters’ that mirrors that of the town (the natural springs have dried up, and it’s losing face to neighboring, tony Schuyler Springs). He’s at the apex of his career, elected to an office of respect, yet is consumed with whom his late wife was sleeping with, whether or not Officer Charice Bond is as in love with him as he is with her, and whether or not he should resign from his position.

Twenty years on from when I first began reading Russo, a lot of water has gone under the bridge. The world has become increasingly smaller and the tragedies of it more readily accessible, so that a storyteller today might feel the need to emphasize the violence and ugliness of their fictional world to hold a reader’s attention. The water in Bath has run cold. While it’s cozy, if not cursed, a darkness has fallen on the streets and seeps into Russo’s story in a way that wasn’t there in 1993. The Rust-Belt town was never a Disneyland by any means, but the stain of violence was simply touched upon, what happened behind closed doors an underlying motive for the psyche of the characters. Today, that stain is unwashable and the violence in-your-face. It’s why we like sequels. Closure isn’t necessarily what we crave from a story, but continuance. And so it is with Russo and his Sully, Douglas Raymer, Carl Roebuck, and Rub Squeers. Where have they been all this time?

What have they been up to? Why, they’ve been right here all along, acting like fools.

orel mushrooms are the stuff of legend and fantasy.

Scattered upon the ground, they look like a little tribe of forest gnomes with magical powers, like beings from a game of Dungeons and Dragons. They taste like an earthy distillation of fungal flavors and aroma, and command respect from cooks and eaters alike, who speak of them with reverence.

For pickers who hear the call, they are a beckon to adventure and profit.

This year’s flush of so-called “natural” morel mushrooms has begun to wane across North America. Naturals come up year after year in the same spots, zealously guarded by those who know them (unless they are in Michigan, the government of which publishes online maps so locals can go find them). But the majority of gathered morels, including virtually all of the ones available for purchase, were harvested in the fire-scarred mountains of the West. While a handful of naturals would be considered a decent harvest for a day’s foray, the fire-following varieties can be astoundingly prolific in spots that were burned the previous summer. Sometimes they grow in such density that it takes effort not to step on them. With buyers paying as much as $20 a pound (they can retail for more than $50/lb), good pickers can easily earn more than a thousand bucks a day for their efforts.

Wait, did I say “easily?” Scratch that.

Even if you live in the mountains, you’ll probably have to drive a few hours and bump along dusty dirt roads to a spot that may or may not have had morels, and may or may not have already been picked. Simply arriving at a burned forest is a good first step, but hardly a guarantee of success. Within burns, mushrooms are finicky as to where they will pop up. They prefer burnt fir stands to pine, but not too burnt — some blazes are so hot they sterilize the soil to the point where nothing will grow. To find these fleeting fungi with regularity requires thinking like a morel. They only appear where there is the correct balance of soil humidity and temperature, which means south-facing slopes will “pop” first, north-facing slopes last.

Getting reliable information is tricky in morel country, and those you ask would sooner lend you their ATM cards and tell you their PINs than steer you in the right direction. Thus the expression: “Anyone foolish enough to ask a picker where he found his will be foolish enough to believe

the answer.”

But all the pain, frustration and expense of getting to the goods will quickly evaporate at the sight of a little fun-guy poking through the black duff. You quickly scan the area for others, pull out your knife, drop to your knees, and start picking. The endorphins and adrenaline surge with the primal thrill of the hunt as you fill your bucket, and every time you eat them you relive this feeling and the sublime connection to the landscape that it embodies. If you dry them for later use, the feelings and flavors can be accessed whenever you rehydrate a few.

So if you have to pay more than you wish at the market for them, think about the work, risk, gas, and other expenses that the harvester went through. Prices are always high at the start of the season, and will start to ease as the season wears on.

So frugal morel purchasers might want to sit tight. Another way to get more fungal mouthfuls for your dollar is to combine morels with your standard button mushrooms. The flavor of the wild ones is so strong that it will augment the relatively mild flavor of the buttons.

Morels should be cooked; eaten raw they can cause gastrointestinal distress.

They respond well to being combined with butter and cream, as in the following recipe that is as good as it gets.

Ingredients 1 cup morels, either whole or sliced ¼ cup heavy cream 1 T butter Zest and juice of one quarter lime ½ medium yellow onion, minced Pinch Nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste Button mushrooms if you’re cheap ¼ cup dry sherry Melt the butter in a heavy bottom pan.

Add onion and morels (and buttons if using). Cook together until onions are translucent and the morels give up their moisture — about 10 minutes. Add sherry, and let it cook off. Add nutmeg, lime zest, and juice. Cook a moment and add the cream. Cook five more minutes, season with salt and pepper, and serve.

hane Black made his bones in Hollywood by writing Lethal Weapon, which is still considered one of the quintessential buddy-cop movies.

Superman director Richard Donner’s pairing of Mel Gibson as the borderline insane adrenaline addict Martin Riggs and Danny Glover as the veteran detective who is getting too old for this crap proved that people not named Eddie Murphy could mine the genre for thrills, laughs, and big box office. Black went on to become one of the highest paid screenwriters in Hollywood history, deconstructed the strongman action genre with 1993’s Last Action Hero, and then knocked around Hollywood for more than a decade before getting his first shot at the director’s chair with 2005’s cult classic Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. That led to him getting tapped by Marvel for the hugely successful Iron Man 3.

Black’s latest film, The Nice Guys, represents something of a return to his buddy-cop roots. It’s the kind of movie you get to make when your last venture is No. 10 on the list of all-time highest-grossing pictures. Ryan Gosling plays Holland March, a private eye trying to make a living for himself and his daughter, 13-year-old Holly (Angourie Rice) by solving banally sordid cases for a client base of easily swindled old ladies. He’s the kind of guy who laments the drop off in his business caused by California’s adopting no-fault divorce laws. As usual for Los Angeles film detectives since Humphrey Bogart was slapping around gunsels, he stumbles into the biggest case of his life: The aunt of recently deceased porn star Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio) thinks she’s still alive and that a girl named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) knows where she is.

Amelia quickly catches on to Holland’s clumsy attempts at detective work and pays thug-for-hire Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) to dissuade him from continuing.

Jackson is the rare knee-breaker who takes pride in professionalism. He’s a white-knuckled teetotaler and only administers the exact amount of violence necessary to complete the job. As a professional courtesy, he explains to Holland what kind of fracture he’s about to receive before breaking his arm. That’s why Jackson is appalled at the sloppy thugmanship displayed by a pair of heavies (one of whom is played by the immortal Keith David) who break into his house and, in the process of interrogating him about his connection to Amelia, kill his two tropical fish.

Vowing revenge for the piscine slaughter, he turns around and hires Holland to find out why Amelia is so important to so many people. The mystery that unfolds takes the unlikely pair of fast friends on a tour of the Los Angeles underworld during the high decadence of the 1970s. Black bounces his dim-witted duo off of the fading remnants of ’60s political radicals, a corrupt Justice Department official played by Kim Basinger, and a psychotic killer who looks like John Boy from The Waltons.

The production designers clearly had a ball recreating disco-era L.A., and the highlight of the film is a porn star party where the band is a digitally recreated Earth, Wind, and Fire. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that something’s a little off. Jokes don’t land, the continuity is confused, and the rhythms are inexplicably jerky. Here’s a lesson: If you want to make a throwback to ’70s cop shows like The Rockford Files, don’t hire the editor of Transformers. Grumpy Gosling and growling Crowe are fun, but they can’t save The Nice Guys from feeling shoddy.

First World Problems Tilda Swinton is a rocker without a voice in A Bigger Splash.

I think A Bigger Splash could represent a turning point for my career as a critic: It’s the moment when I get to identify, and hopefully lend a name to, an emerging genre.

Hear me out: The last few years have seen a slow trickle of films produced in Europe that, despite their outward differences, share certain structural similarities.

A group of people, usually white but always unusually rich and privileged, travel to an exotic destination for fun and relaxation. Fine wines are consumed, and lots of sex is had. But their attempt to outrun their personal demons is short-circuited by an unexpected visitor, and soon paradise comes to seem like an expensive prison.

Call them First World Problems (FWP) films. Last year’s Youth, an Italian film starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel, sequestered the aging actors in a resort in the Swiss Alps where they are driven to despair and then rediscover the joys of life while looking at a nude Miss Universe. It was one example of the genre, which seems to be driven financially by Italian tourism department tax credits.

Swinton plays Marianne Lane, a Bowie-esque rock star who has retreated to the sunny little island to recover after surgery to remove vocal cord polyps. She’s happily napping in the sunshine with her boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts), a filmmaker trying to stay sober after a drug-induced suicide attempt a couple of years ago, when trouble arrives in the person of Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson). Harry is a freewheeling rock producer who has only recently acknowledged that Penelope is his daughter. The reason for his Mediterranean sojourn is ostensibly to get to know his progeny, but since his chosen

that his real motives are different from his stated mission. Penelope is initially starstruck, but that doesn’t last long as she sees that the glamorous folks her dad keeps company with are just flawed human beings like the rest of us.

When Swinton rolls out of bed, she already has the gravitas to play a rock star trying to do the right thing, so for an added degree of difficulty, she plays Marianne as practically mute. If she speaks, she risks undoing the healing her voice sorely needs, so when she does get worked up enough to speak, her words come out as a feeble croak. Swinton is able to conjure more emotion with simple

and subtle pantomime than most actors can manage with a full script. Fiennes gets to play essentially the opposite of his fastidious Gustave from The Grand Budapest Hotel. Unlike Marianne, Harry hasn’t accepted any of the responsibility that’s supposed to come with age, but where he and his ex once had wild partying in common, now he’s trying to keep the party going on his own, and it’s getting a little pathetic. Their slowly building emotional tug of war is the film’s heart and soul.

Just as all four main characters have backed themselves into a corner and things are about to get really interesting, Guadagnino and screenwriter David Kajganich cop out. Instead of resolving the converging tensions, they try to raise the stakes, but succeed only in breaking the spell of fermenting decadence. A Bigger Splash is not a bad film, per se, it just never lives up to the early promise of its crackerjack cast. But since these FWP films are financed by tourism-promoting tax credits, it did succeed in one respect: I really want to go to Italy now.

There’s an episode of 30 Rock where Jack talks about how his product integration sets a new standard in upward revenue-stream dynamics. It’s word salad, but yet somehow you get the drift, don’t you? It’s a saddle of charred corporate buzzword garnished with a foam of pretentiousness and a coulis of self-importance. We all know someone who talks like this.

Usually it’s someone who makes a big deal of telling you he went to the Wharton School and that he works hard to play hard. He’s also been known to pound a few Bud Heavies because he is That Guy. He’s Buzzword Guy. Every few years, I like to take stock of some of the stupidest corporate buzzwords. Wait.

I say that like there are some buzzwords that aren’t stupid. Ahem. Every few years I like to sit back and make fun of some of the stupidest of the stupid buzzwords out there. I try not to do it any more than that because then all this column would become is me ranting about why you can’t just call someone. Why do you have to “reach out”? Are you a member of the Four Tops? Doubtful. My husband already hears me complain about people “gifting” each other, and I don’t think he wants to read about it too.

One of my several side gigs is as a researcher. I get a lot of really interesting questions, but I’ve noticed recently I’ve gotten a lot of questions involving “industry disruption.” What are disruptive trends in software as a service? Who are the top merchant services aggregator disrupters? How is the pet industry being disrupted?

I want to start every answer with, dude. First? Just because you have some innovation or some startup with a stupid name doesn’t mean you’re disruptive. Or, wait, maybe it does because I’m not entirely sure what it means to be disruptive anymore. I thought it meant an innovation that changes an industry. Netflix was a disrupter to the video-rental industry even though it wasn’t immediately successful. Now it’s being used for any new rowdy startup Alec wanting to change the game. Uber isn’t disrupting the taxi industry, according to Clayton Baldwin, 30 Christensen, who coined “disruption” in 1995, and he’s a mite pissed off that you youngsters Rock’s Jack are corrupting his buzzword. Get off his lawn!

I’ve been gnashing my teeth over “ecosystem” applied to business for a few years. It replaced “global,” I think. A company can have an ecosystem when it comes to culture, but Apple has an ecosystem when it comes to devices. If you ask me to “circle back,” I will. But only long enough to pop your jaw. Are you a “wantrepreneur” interested in amplifying insight-as-a-service or “recrutainment”? Well, then you totally need OTTS (over the top service) because you have to look at your ROR (return on relationship) to really max your influencer marketing.

Normal people do this crap too. It isn’t just media mavens. I was talking to my very dear friend of 30 years about underwear.

I bought TEN NEW PAIRS OF DRAWERS ALL AT ONCE! I was so excited. I mean, I’m in my 40s, so I’ve already been through the excitement of discovering a new band or finding out you won’t need antibiotics for that thing. New underwear is a Very. Big. Deal. So I said to her, why is it we ever thought getting underwear was the worst gift ever? It’s awesome! And she, lovely woman she is, replied with, “Who gifted you underwear?”

We were on the phone, so she couldn’t see the look I was giving her, but she heard it. Oh, she heard it. She knows how I feel about being gifted. Being gifted means you can play a piece of music after hearing it only one time or that you can do long division in your head without using your fingers. Gifting makes it all about you. It takes the giver out of the equation. Plus it just sounds stupid.

Mommy bloggers in Utah are always talking about being gifted. They’re usually gifted an old chair and some PVC pipe that they turn into a 16-piece “Anthro knockoff ” dinner set. I’m not sure what it is ladies in Utah see in Anthropologie that the rest of the country doesn’t. I mean, here in Tennessee, we love a good wacky Anthropologie cardboard deer head as much as they do in Atlanta, but dang. Utah lady bloggers devote entire websites to knocking off the “Anthro look.” But I digress.

Core competency, swim lane, buy-in, deep dive, downstream, and what I might hate even more than disruption: biased algorithms.

Incentivize your team! Future-proof your alpha deployment! Grow your playing field organically! Want to dialog your consumer space?

Do it without me, because I have no idea what that means.
