As everyone knows by now, gender- and genre-bending musician Prince died unexpectedly at his home in Minneapolis last week at the age of 57. It came as a tremendous shock, with the story first breaking on TMZ, then hitting social media and spreading like spilled mercury before more reputable media outlets confirmed the worst.

Instantly, the world rushed to honor Prince’s memory and his music. Thousands of people posted links to their favorite Prince performances. Hundreds of musicians — professional and amateur — posted videos of themselves playing Prince songs. Cities around the world lit their bridges, overpasses, fountains, obelisks, and various other civic edifices purple. Self-professed nerds, weirdos, and shy people praised Prince for his bravery in flouting gender and racial stereotypes, and for giving them the courage to become themselves. Movie theaters announced free showings of Purple Rain.

It was a sad, sad a day for everyone.

Saddest of all, I think, is the fact that Prince didn’t live long enough to meet me.

No doubt, he probably read my columns online, and I’m sure he laughed at some of my Twitter witticisms (I mean, who wouldn’t?), but the Purple One and I never could manage to get together IRL. I feel sad that he didn’t get to know my talented and beautiful children, all grown now. Nor did he get to meet my gorgeous and brilliant wife. (I think the two of them would have gotten along famously. She loves “Little Red Corvette.”) And I regret that I never got to grill my famous Korean spareribs for him while we chilled together on the back patio.

Okay, I know, I know, I shouldn’t make Prince’s death about me. That’s terribly wrong. But so is the fact that literally within five or six hours of the news of his death, the Prince internet tsunami turned from real sadness and sincere tributes to Facebook clickbait memes like: “Which Prince Song Was Written for You?”; “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Prince”; “The Last 6 CDs Prince Purchased”; and “Wow, I Didn’t Know Prince Wrote That Song!”

It turned to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer mourning the man responsible for the seminal “Purple Haze” album. It turned to Memphis television reporters broadcasting themselves lip-synching Prince songs. Prince even got “quoted” in a local meme as supporting the “no parking on the Greensward” movement.

Then came the “humor.” Pictures of Prince on the $20 bill, suggesting we make it worth $19.99. Har. Or, “Why is Prince dead when the Kardashians are still alive?”

Finally, there was the transgender-bathroom meme suggesting we should all just “Potty Like It’s 1999.”

Just stop, already.

Prince’s life and music meant something to millions of people. There’s no denying he was a musical genius — a man who could play any instrument and who N EWS & O P I N I O N cranked out dozens of brilliant pop LETTERS - 4 records. The problem with APop’s argument is that the minimum wage has been kept artificially low by conservatives for decades.

If it had kept up with wages and cost of living from its inception, it would now be something like $21/hour.

The real argument is never stated — that the minimum wage sets the bar for wages across the board. If you raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, then all those slobs who have been toiling away in warehouses and factories and flower shops and kitchens for 20 years to work their way up to $15 an hour are going to want a raise, too. And if they get raises, then they will be making more than middle management, who will want raises, too.

This is what puts the fear of Jesus into the rent collectors. Such a law would create a massive shift of wealth out of the hands of the 1 percent, undoing 30 years of hard work buying off legislators to suppress wages.

That’s why the 1 percent works so hard to elect Republicans, who8 invariably 5 6 7 crash the economy built up by Democrats. However, because they are 15they only 114 percent of the population, had to make a Faustian bargain with 18 the Bible bangers and Confederate holdouts in order to hold onto power. Friedrich Nietzsche (or Kelly Clarkson or Kanye West) said it best: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” As LGBT Tennesseans (and especially transgender Tennesseans) faced one of the worst years for anti-gay and anti-trans legislation, the local trans community has begun to band together.

Last week, the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center (MGLCC) hosted the first meeting of the center’s new transgender committee, which was immediately followed by a transgender flag-raising ceremony.

The trans flag consists of five horizontal stripes — two in light blue, two in pink, and a white strip across the center.

“We had a transgender flag here before, but it was much smaller than the rainbow flag, and it was in rags and tatters,” said Kayla Gore, the transgender service specialist at MGLCC. “We wanted to make sure the trans community felt welcome here. Now, from down the street, you can see our flag and know that you’re welcome here.”

Gore said MGLCC is starting a new support group for transgender men, who were previously lacking their own group, on Friday, April 29th. And she said the center formed its new transgender committee to help the community stay informed about future statewide political threats or local issues.

“It’s good to have organization when there’s so much stuff going on. If we’re not organized, we’re not going to be prepared for what’s coming,” Gore said.

The “stuff going on” that Gore is referring to includes a number of anti-LGBT bills that were considered in the now-adjourned General Assembly this past session. A bill that would have banned transgender students at public schools and universities from using the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity was pulled by its sponsor, Rep. Susan Lynn, at the last minute.

But another bill, which has come to be known as Hate Bill 1840 by its opponents, that passed has potential to negatively impact the LGBT community in Tennessee.

That bill, which, at press time, was still awaiting Governor Bill Haslam’s signature or veto, allows counselors to deny service to any client who conflicts with the counselor’s “sincerely held beliefs.”

The bill could have far-reaching impact, but Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) Executive Director Chris Sanders said the LGBT community is intended as the

Kelly didn’t have details. She wasn’t 100 percent sure if Prince was really playing a second show following his big concert at the BassPro Shops (formerly known as the Pyramid). But the last time Kelly was 99 percent sure about something, the two of us went to the Peabody Hotel, called the front desk from a pay phone, asked for Tom Waits’ room, and Waits answered.

thing was said about “nursery rhymes,” and then, with increasing confidence, the two men started improvising together. I wish I could tell you what was said and sung, but the details have slipped away. All that remains is the memory of a grin so big it threatened to crack my face and a similar memory of so many other people wearing the same dopey expression.

I’ve got no pictures, but I swear to God (and Wendy and Lisa too), it happened. You’ll just have to trust me and the few hundred other people lucky enough to get a call.

what happened at the New Daisy that night. Wearing shiny lavender jammies, Prince owned the stage, running through songs like “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker,” “Baby I’m a Star,” and “1999.” He covered James Brown, Parliament, and the Staples Singers.

The highlight of the show, however, was when Prince introduced his special guest, 80-year-old Stax royalty Rufus Thomas. Then the unflappable Purple One proceded to nerd the hell out, saying he didn’t ever want his time with Rufus to end.

There was conflict too. And drama!

When Prince encouraged Thomas to cut loose and freestyle, he balked: “Oh no.” There was a back and forth between the two musical icons. Some-

primary target.

“Conceivably, sexism and racism are sincerely held principles, too. At this point, it’s so wide open, it’s ridiculous, and it defeats the purpose of having a counseling code of ethics,” Sanders said.

According to Sanders, the LGBT community in Tennessee has “never had a year like this” in regard to anti-LGBT legislation and says that’s likely due to backlash from the U.S. Supreme Court decision last year legalizing same-sex marriage. Earlier this year, the Tennessee House passed an anti-same-sex marriage resolution condemning the Supreme Court decision.

Sanders said he’s expecting the transgender bathroom bill to be back next session, and TEP is working to strengthen ties with religious organizations that may help them fight such bills in the future.

“We want to engage members of conservative denominations who are tired of religion being used for discrimination,” Sanders said.

Next time around, TEP may have some help from a new political coalition that’s forming in Memphis. The West Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition (TTPC) has started a Facebook page and plans to hold its first meeting soon.

“We’ll meet once a month to update everyone on political news, and we’ll be looking at local trans issues or school issues. We want to get people together to stand against any anti-trans legislation that comes up,” said Victoria Hester, the assistant coordinator for the coalition.

The local coalition is affiliated with the statewide TTPC, which also has factions in East and Middle Tennessee. An older version of the West Tennessee group disbanded years ago.

• Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland presented his first budget to the Memphis City Council last week, a budget that focused on public safety, paving, pensions, and no new taxes.

• The Memphis City Council approved a massive, $200 million development north of Shelby Farms Park last week in a move that frustrated many area residents.

Parkside at Shelby Farms would sit on about 55 acres at the corner of Whitten and Mullins Station. It would include high-rise apartment buildings, many smaller, “garden style” apartment buildings, a swimming pool, a clubhouse, and thousands of square feet for retail and office space.

The property was zoned only for single-family homes. But the city council changed that to allow the project to go through, despite more than an hour of pleas from neighbors to stop the project. Those neighbors worry that the project will disrupt their quiet community and drive property values down.

• A new gravel path appeared last week on the Greensward at Overton Park, and someone vandalized the Memphis Zoo sign over the weekend.

The path angered park advocates, who worried the path signaled the zoo’s long-term use of the space for overflow parking. Zoo officials said they simply “re-graveled” the path after days of heavy rains.

Red paint was splashed on the Overton Park sign at Sam Cooper and East Parkway, and a vandal scrawled the word “no” over the zoo’s logo. The sign was cleaned up Saturday by a park advocate.

• The Memphis Zoo gave media tours of its new Zambezi River Hippo Camp. The $22 million exhibit will open soon and is the first new exhibit since Teton Trek opened in 2009.

• Ikea gave the media a peek at the construction of its Memphis store on Germantown Parkway this week. The store is slated to open this fall.

• Parking spots will become mini parks this week “in a city where public parks are sometimes turned into parking lots.”

Park(ing) Day commences Thursday in conjunction with the Urban Land Institute’s RegionSmart planning summit. Six parking spaces in front of the Orpheum Theatre will become free, family-friendly micro-parks.

Q&A with Mary Skinner and Dan E. Pomeroy Staff from the Tennessee State Museum

How do you tell a state’s long and varied story through artifacts?

Dan Pomeroy: In order to be prepared to tell this full story, the State Museum has been aggressively and selectively adding to its collection of objects and artifacts for the last four decades.

This collection contains artifacts relating to notable personalities, such as presidents and governors, but also includes items designed to tell the story of other aspects of Tennessee, such as Native Americans, urban centers, business, manufacturing, labor, immigration, African Americans, art, crafts, music, children, home life, rural communities, women, sports, and common soldiers. These and other stories obviously intersect and are interwoven, which is part of the challenge to museum interpretation.

How is the museum determining what to fit and what to leave out?

MS: It is impossible for any museum with a collection as large as ours to put everything on exhibit for public view at one time. That is why the new museum will have separate galleries that will allow visitors to explore specific periods and themes more deeply — including our Civil War history, music, art and cultural issues of the day. These exhibits will be easier to change and update as we continue to acquire new artifacts.

What do you think visitors will take away about Tennessee?

DP: The ultimate goal is to create as complete a story as possible for the people of Tennessee and for our state’s visitors. Tennessee’s story is a critical and significant part of America and the world, and, taken as a whole, it should be a source of pride and empowerment to Tennesseans everywhere. This may be particularly important for the tens of thousands of school children who will visit the State Museum.

Flyer: When outsiders think of Memphis, they often think of Elvis and barbecue. How will the museum break that cliché in what’s represented about the city?

Mary Skinner: The State Museum traces the roots of its large collection back to 1818 and has been collecting artifacts pertinent to the telling of Tennessee’s history for almost 200 years.

We literally have hundreds of objects (furniture, art, textiles, musical items) from Memphis in our collection, including a 1919 American LaFrance Type 45 triplecombination fire engine, an 1860s Rococo Revival mirror from the Hunt Phelan House, a collection of Ernest Withers’ civil rights photographs, a document signed by Abraham Lincoln concerning Civil War government in Memphis, and paintings by Carroll Cloar.

The list goes on and on.

A new $160 million Tennessee State Museum will open in 2018 at Nashville’s Bicentennial Mall. The 137,000-square-foot facility will house artifacts from across the state, and each city will get its own chronological exhibit.

The museum broke ground earlier this month, and now its staff is on a statewide tour to inform residents of Tennessee towns and cities of the museum’s progress. The tour stopped in Memphis earlier this week The Flyer spoke with the museum’s community officer Mary Skinner and Chief Curator Dan E. Pomeroy about the hurdles of the expansive project and what sort of representation Memphis will have. — Joshua Cannon

Transitions General Assembly closes, County Commission defers, and 8th District hopefuls count their money.

There was a feeling of something like anti-climax last week, as the Tennessee General Assembly called it quits. The customary post-session press conference involving Governor Bill Haslam and the legislature’s Republican leaders was a relatively perfunctory affair compared to those of previous years.

What dominated that occasion was not so much commentary on the events of the late session, as the imminent leave-taking of state Senate Speaker/Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey, who will be retiring this year, and who received hearty send-offs from his fellow leaders.

Missing from the press conference was House Speaker Beth Harwell, who was substituted for by House Speaker Pro Tem Curtis Johnson (R-Clarksville), who kept his silence. Other attendees were House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick (R-Chattanooga) and Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville), a likely future candidate for governor who, as a prelude, may attempt to succeed Ramsey as Senate speaker.

Late in the session, Norris had played a key role at several key points. Though formally one of the Senate’s co-sponsors of a de-annexation bill that was rushed through the House, Norris was a subtle force in making sure the bill received line-item vetting in the Senate’s State and Local Committee and that opponents of the measure from Memphis got a fair — and, as it turned out, successful — shot at derailing it.

Norris was also a vocal opponent of a bill to make the Holy Bible the official state book. Though the bill passed both chambers, it was vetoed by Haslam, whose opposition survived a veto-override vote in the House.

The scuttling of the Bible bill and of

the so-called “bathroom bill,” which would have forced transgendered people to use the public lavatories of their birth gender, were among the terminal acts of this year’s General Assembly. Other dramatic late actions included the passage of legislation starting the clock on eventual abolition of the Hall Income Tax on interest and dividends and passage of yet another gun bill, this one allowing full-time employees to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

Haslam, who has previously disapproved gun bills extending carry rights into various public spaces but has not yet vetoed one, is said to be considering a veto of this one.

At the session-ending press conference, Haslam touched briefly on his two major successes — passage of comprehensive public-safety act and a major increase in funding for public education.

• More is Less: There’s a catch of sorts to the education increases, however — one that got a bit of exposure on committee day of the Shelby County Commission last Wednesday. During an audio feed from Nashville, Chip Smith, a member of the lobbying team employed by the county, was grilled by commissioners about the level of spending routed toward public schools in Shelby County.

Commission education committee chair David Reaves, in particular, asked Smith about a change in the funding formula that reduced by a factor of 75 percent what had been a Cost Differential Factor (CDF) applied to state funding allocations to counties with large urban populations.

The result, said Reaves, was that while Shelby County Schools and the county’s six suburban school districts would be receiving more money in the coming year, it would be proportionally less than the McCormick, Johnson, Haslam, Ramsey, and Norris wrap up the legislative session in Nashville.

• At its regular public meeting on Monday, the commission voted to refer back to committee the matter of funding District Attorney General Amy Weirich’s office for expenses relating to the processing of footage from car cameras and body-worn cameras to be used by local law enforcement. Commissioner Heidi Shafer led the referral move, contending that city government had put the county on the hook for the matter without proper advance consultation, and that policies for the use of body cams by law enforcement deserved more discussion.

The commission voted for the deferral by a 10-1 vote, Commissioner Walter Bailey being the lone dissenter.

• Ross Dyer will continue to function as county attorney through April, though the General Assembly last week confirmed his appointment by Governor Haslam as a Judge of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, West Tennessee division, to replace Judge Roger Page, who has moved on to the state Supreme Court.

Serving in Dyer’s stead for the time being will be deputy County Attorneys Kim Koratsky and Marcy Ingram. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, now a candidate for Congress in the 8th District, said Monday he will withhold appointing a permanent successor to Dyer until September, when the Republican primary election will have been concluded.

Though considered one of the frontrunners in the GOP primary, Luttrell ranks third in fundraising, with $144,570, behind state Senator Brian Kelsey ($433,605) and former U.S. Attorney David Kustoff ($319,682). Memphis radiologist/ broadcast executive George Flinn has much more cash on hand, having lent his campaign $2.7 million.

Small Change It’s wonderful that the $20 bill will at some point in the reasonably near future bear the likeness of Harriet Tubman, a genuinely heroic figure in American history and one whose life-or-death efforts on behalf of equality were put to the test as an active participant in the struggles of the Civil War. That she represents two groups — women and African Americans — who had previously been shunned in the ceremony of our currency (the paper version of it, anyhow) was, and is, an additional point to be celebrated.

And there’s no doubting that Andrew Jackson, the general and president whose likeness she will supplant, had his flaws. Yes, he was murderous to the Native American population of the South, whose members he mercilessly slew or moved aside to make room for white settlers.

And yes, he was a slave owner, a biographical fact that, on his part as well as many, many others in the group we call “forefathers,” becomes less and less easy to accept, much less venerate.

It is understandable — especially in the wake of last year’s horrific slaughter of nine African-American church-goers by a neo-Confederate racist — that we should start a rethinking process about the events and establishments that bear the name of such known slaveholders. In Tennessee, the matter of changing the name of the Democratic Party’s annual Jackson Day banquet in Nashville was put to a vote of the party’s executive committee. To the surprise of some, the majority favored retaining the homage to Jackson. Was this fair or foul?

Partly, the vote represented a certain regard for tradition. The name

“Jackson” is, after all, one of the most thoroughly embedded names in the landscape of Americana. But, beyond that, the issue is more nuanced than a simple recitation of Andrew Jackson’s grave misdeeds would indicate. The victory of Jackson’s ragtag army over a disciplined British force at the Battle of New Orleans remains one of the signal events of American history. His presidency, moreover, was characterized by systematic efforts to democratize the office (for whites, anyhow) and, a century before FDR, to combat and diminish the power of organized money. Less known is the fact that, 35 years before Fort Sumter, Jackson preserved the Union by backing down the first attempt at secession by South Carolina.

For that matter, if we are to cleanse the national honor roll of slave-holders, what should we do with the name of our national capital? George Washington, too, was an offender on that count.

Let us be real here. Grant, Sherman, Lee, Jackson — they all did things on the battlefield that would have made George “Blood and Guts” Patton turn his head. Woodrow Wilson quite literally set back the progress of desegregation in his time. But just as there are no saints in our national pantheon, there are no Hitlers, either.

So Andrew Jackson will be moved to the back side of the $20 bill, and the front side will become Tubman’s. That seems about right.

Restless Bedfellows Both political parties have internal tensions these days, and they’re fact-based. other, a bill enshrining the Holy Bible as the official state book. Leaving aside the very real civil-liberties and First Amendment aspects inherent in both bills, the aforementioned corporate interests opposed them both because they were, in simplest terms, bad for business.

The Republican Party’s right-wing populists, on the other hand, favored the two bills as emblematic of their “values” issues, in defense of which they had drifted away from what they saw as an over-secularized, over-diverse Democratic Party.

This time, there was no powerful lobby like the NRA intervening, and business (aided by the Democratic minority) won, forcing the eventual scuttling of both bills.

But there will be other such battles on the state front — each corresponding in rough (if inexact) ways to the current national schism between Trump supporters and the GOP establishment.

If all this bodes ill for the future unity of the Republican Party, the Democrats have their own fissures to worry about. The presidential-primary contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders has outlined an ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party as well — one similar in some ways to that afflicting the Republicans.

Sanders is clearly on to something with his unflagging emphasis on the core issue of economic inequality. He’s the one attracting the multitudes, building out from that central issue, while Clinton’s political base is more a matter of putting together a collection of special interests, patchworkstyle, working from the outside in.

Many of these she shares with Sanders — blacks, gays, women, civil libertarians, low-income voters, et al. — but one of them is hers alone: big money.

She is still the likely primary winner, but her ties to the financial establishment leave her dependent on the amorphous appeal of “diversity” instead of the central one of reform.

If not this year, down the line, the Democrats in Tennessee as elsewhere will have to have their own internal reckoning.

Anybody who’s been paying the slightest bit of attention to Tennessee state government in recent years has surely noticed that we have what amounts to one-party government. Republicans run the roost, and Democrats are a rump group with minimal numbers and no power.

This state of affairs has existed for less than 10 years. Going into 2008, the year of Barack Obama’s election as president, Tennessee still had a nominally Democratic governor in Phil Bredesen, control of the state House of Representatives, and nearparity in the state Senate, where Republicans had the narrowest possible majority.

The turnover of a handful of seats in 2008 gave the GOP a majority of one in the House.

It was only in the presidential off-year election of 2010 that the Republicans essentially swept the Democrats in legislative races and took firm control of both houses. That year, the gubernatorial race was basically a three-way affair involving Republicans Bill Haslam, Zach Wamp, and Ron Ramsey, with the general election contest between primary winner Haslam and Democrat Mike McWherter being a no-contest walkover for the GOP. President Obama was reelected in 2012 with no help from Tennessee, an erstwhile bellwether state which at that point had firmly realigned with the Deep South politically. In the off-year election of 2014, the Republicans won their present supermajority. End of story?

Nope. What has gone on since has been the slow, but now obvious, development of a fissure in state Republican ranks.

As it turns out, nature not only abhors a vacuum; failing an iron-handed dictator, it pretty much rejects a monolith, too, and, under easy-going Republican Governor Haslam, the natural yin and yang of things has begun to reassert itself.

Among state Republicans, this fragmentation first became noticeable in several of the legislative fights over gun bills — particularly those imposing official toleration of concealed weapons on or around business property. Those battles pitted Republican legislators loyal to (or indebted to) established corporate interests against Tea Party insurgents who were susceptible to the blandishments (or threats) of the faux-populist NRA. The estimable journalistic-workhorseturned-occasional-columnist Tom Humphrey did an insightful take this past weekend about a legislative Republican split over two matters — one, the so-called “bathroom bill” that would force transgendered persons to use only the public lavatory facilities of their birth gender; the

Courtney Barnett is getting ready to board a plane somewhere on the West Coast when her manager hands her the phone.

She sounds tired and in a bit of a haze, which is understandable, considering she’s been on the road almost nonstop for the past two years.

In the time that’s led up to our phone call, Barnett has gone from one of Australian indie rock’s best-kept secrets to a Grammy-nominated household name.

14 Her deadpan vocal delivery and witty lyrics have pushed her to the forefront

of a modern music movement that sits somewhere in between mainstream rock and the type of stuff you hear playing at Urban Outfitters. But there’s something more intelligent and authentic about Barnett’s music, something that sets her apart from the pack.

Growing up in Pittwater, Australia — a port town about an hour outside of Sydney — gave Barnett her small-town charm and provided endless experiences that would later serve as song fodder. “[Pittwater] was far up from town, so that probably made my imagination run a little bit more. It was kind of harder to do things with friends after school and stuff,” Barnett explains.

“We were around lots of bush, and me and my brother would run around a lot in the water. We were very outdoorsy. I

reckon that helped start my creativity a little bit better than sitting in front of the TV would have.”

Barnett sharpened her chops in the Melbourne grunge band Rapid Transit and played with psych-rockers Immigrant Union as well as lead guitar on her girlfriend Jen Cloher’s album, In Blood Memory. But even though she’s a gifted guitarist, Barnett is most known for her lyrics. “Pedestrian at Best,” the breakout hit from 2015’s Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, comes across like a smarter “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for a new generation of alt-teens. Her greatest attribute as a songwriter is how effortlessly she seems to spit out sharp lyrics.

“I guess I write lots of different stuff,” she says. “I do a lot of journal writing, and I write short stories that don’t turn into

anything. I don’t think I’m as disciplined as I could be or should be. I don’t really have a solid writing schedule.”

When it comes to writing lyrics, there isn’t a set formula in place either, but she does cite Jonathan Richman, Patti Smith, and Leonard Cohen as some of her favorite lyricists. When I ask whether the lyrics or the song comes first, Barnett says, “It depends on the situation. It’s different every time. I let my mind wander under some kind of subconscious stream, and I see what comes out. Sometimes I start with a song title, and that gives it a direction; other times I start with a narrative. I always have to be singing about something though; songs about nothing piss me off.”

by Barnett and Cloher in their living room. The label remains fiercely indie since Barnett has risen as a high-profile songwriter, and she laughs when I ask if the record label has become a subsidiary of something bigger.

“It’s pretty small,” she says. “We run it ourselves and fund it ourselves, and we work with about seven bands. Me and Jen and a couple of my friends do it. I think it’s like the best thing in the world. I get to release my music and my art and my friends’ art. I don’t have any interests in forfeiting those things for money or for success,” she adds. “I have enough money to do what I want to do. It’s comfortable and lets me be artistic.”

Some of Barnett’s best songs are about the more mundane aspects of existence.

“Depreston” sounds like a classic love song on the surface, until you dig deeper and realize that she just made you have feelings about a percolator that makes great lattes.

With the ability to romanticize inanimate objects, you’d think that the road could take its toll, especially on someone who enjoys the little things that come with a stable lifestyle. Barnett doesn’t see it that way.

“We’ve been touring nonstop for the past two years. It has ups and downs, but I’m traveling the world, playing my songs to people, and that’s kind of really good,” Barnett says.

“It’s a weird life. We’ve become a weird family because we spend more time with each other than we do with our partners.

I’d never thought I’d have enough money to travel outside of Australia. I always assumed I’d never get to leave. And now

we’ve traveled the whole world.”

Barnett is getting ready to board that plane when I ask her in what setting she most prefers performing her music. This is an artist whose music works as well in a DIY basement venue as it does being blasted out of festival speakers at Coachella.

“I think my favorite kind of show is a tiny club full of people with their hands on the stage. But we are lucky that we’ve been able to do both, because fests are just as fun. We played this beautiful theater last night, and that was amazing, but you’re on stage to play these songs to people no matter where you are, and that’s pretty fucking cool.”

Perhaps that’s the most compelling thing about Barnett. Whether she wanted to or not, she’s become modern rock-androll’s great equalizer, taking her brand of

With a legendary career that’s lasted nearly 50 years, we could dedicate this entire issue of the Flyer to Neil Young, and there would still be plenty more of his story to tell. The Canadian-born Young is one of the greatest songwriters in rock-and-roll history, and his signature vocal style is one of the most recognizable in music. Like the Grateful Dead or the Rolling Stones, Young has a following that’s as devout as they come, meaning that you don’t often hear, “Yeah, I only like a couple of his songs” when the conversation is about ol’ Neil.

While other popular artists have had to reinvent themselves multiple times to stay relevant in the mainstream, Young has stuck to his guns as a left-field songwriter.

That’s not to say the man’s perfect (The Shocking Pinks, anyone?), but he is reliable.

Even that album has one of the best recorded versions of his hit “Wonderin’.”

Young also has some interesting Memphis ties, having toured with Booker T. and the M.G.’s as his backing band in 1993.

Young’s long career has already been written about, dissected, and criticized at great length, so I decided to focus on two Neil Young albums that changed my perception of what classic rock could be.

Here’s hoping he plays anything off either of these records when he headlines Beale Street Music Fest Friday night.

On the Beach (Reprise Records, 1974) If you ever find yourself planning a playlist for a road trip, this album needs to be in your rotation. On the Beach perfectly captures Young’s ability to write personal lyrics and his willingness to talk shit to those who’ve wronged him in some way.

“Walk On,” the first song on the album, immediately addresses his critics or past friendships that have turned sour. There is plenty of lyrical gold on this album, from the biting lines of “Revolution Blues” (most likely inspired by his visits with Charles Manson) to the prophetic lines on “For the Turnstiles.”

This is classic “negative” Neil Young, but the songwriting and guitar playing is so mesmerizing that you almost forget that these are, for the most part, sad or angry songs. While On the Beach wasn’t as commercially successful as Harvest or After the Gold Rush, the record is widely considered one of his best albums by fans and critics, even if it wasn’t widely available until decades after it was released.

my second-favorite Neil Young record. The album artwork has a vibe of “this is so ugly it must be good” going on, but what’s inside is pure gold. Album opener “Don’t Cry No Tears” is an absolute killer; the lyrics tell a gut-wrenching tale of a woman who has moved on. The song is as depressing as they come, but maybe that’s the best thing about this era of Young’s music — he made being depressed and negative acceptable, cool, and perhaps most important, marketable.

Most modern, politically correct music writers would probably classify Zuma track “Stupid Girl” as sexist, but some of the best rock-and-roll has always been controversial (See “Under My Thumb” by the Rolling Stones or “All This and More” by the Dead Boys). And no, I’m not comparing Neil Young to the Dead Boys, but the point is that you don’t have to be in a great mood to write a great song. — Chris Shaw

Julien Baker is on her way to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she will begin a 13-day tour that ends at Beale Street Music Festival.

She’s been reading a lot. One book is about straight-edge hardcore. Another is a historical analysis of emo, Nothing Feels Good — fitting for a musician whose Instagram bio reads, “Sad songs make me feel better.” She’s also reading articles about punk. On April 29th, she’ll open Beale Street Music Festival on the same stage where Neil Young will later headline.

Just a few years ago, Baker played most of her shows in a suburban living room in Memphis’ Smithseven House. Now, she’s navigating a transition from her DIY roots to a critically acclaimed music career whose trajectory seemingly has no ceiling.

“In an interview Aaron Weiss (of MewithoutYou) did with BadChristian, he said, ‘I feel like I’m always striving, and I’m always doing it wrong,’” Baker says. “But I’m obsessed with striving.’”

“I feel like I mess up a lot. The existential pressure, as the opportunities grow and I get to do more things, like play bigger cap venues, that increases the level to which I have to be very intentional about how I am using these opportunities. Am I just letting them fall on me — or employing them for some greater cause?”

I first met Baker at a now-defunct church called Veritas, which occupied a room at the Butcher Shop on Germantown Parkway. She was 14 years old and not much shorter than she stands today. “Celtic Thunder,” hollered worship leader Charlie Shaw, calling her to the impromptu stage.

Between her long red hair and her skill set on the mandolin, the nickname stuck.

After church ended that day, Baker told

me she was starting a band called the Star Killers with some Arlington High School friends. They later changed their named to Forrister, and she still plays with them. At the time, I played in a band called Wicker that frequented the Skate Park of Memphis.

Created by Smithseven Records founder Brian Vernon, it served as the house band for a nonprofit label that gave most of its money to charity.

The skate park was Baker’s stomping ground, too, and we soon became friends.

She says those formative years with Smithseven — and her friendship with Vernon — still shape her perception of success, even as she struggles to identify what it means to be successful.

“I feel like I could have turned out more judgmental, more self-destructive, and more embittered if I had not been exposed to Smithseven’s overarching positive-punk ideology,” Baker says.

Among those who knew her in Memphis, there was no question that Baker would catch national attention. The question, simply, was when? The answer came after she uploaded nine harrowing songs she’d written while studying at Middle Tennessee State University. Titled Sprained Ankle, each track on the album details with vivid imagery a difficult point in Baker’s life following a relationship gone south and the distance between herself and Forrister.

The LP’s sound is rooted in her favorite artists, musicians like Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. Her melodies are delivered in the same shaky-but-sturdy strength that graced the Smithseven House for so many years. Then, 6131 Records signed Baker and rereleased the album, which garnered critical praise. The New York Times called it one of the best albums of 2015.

But Baker felt guilty. “One time, I started crying when NPR put a song up, because I was like, ‘Why? This should be me and Forrister, and it’s not,” Baker says.

“Shaun [Rhorer of 6131] was like, “‘No, you need to be doing as well as you can with this and seeing how far it will go, because that’s just more doors opened up for Forrister. Look at the big picture. What could you achieve if you gave in a little bit to gain a little ground?’”

As her career continues to pick up steam, publicists, managers, and agents have opened new doors. The new connections have broken down misconceptions Baker held about the music industry: “These people aren’t chewing their stogies and waving their briefcases around,” Baker says. “They don’t play an instrument, but they are equally as passionate about music.

“Everybody I meet is so non-competitive,” Baker says. “Maybe I come off as obviously green and people feel responsible for preserving that. Sharon sent me a message one time … the last line was ‘A lot of people are going to want things from you. I just want to be your friend.’ Seeing that kind of willingness to work together is absolutely inspiring.” — Josh Cannon

Know Your Enemy

The setting: a community with a popular water attraction. The conflict: There’s something dangerous lurking in the water. One man knows the truth, but vested interests warn that panic can be expensive. No, I’m not talking about Steven Spielberg’s famous shark flick. Nor am I referring to some future Michael Moore documentary about public utilities in Flint, Michigan. Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play, An Enemy of the People, may not be as well-known (or action-packed) as Jaws, but it tells the kind of political horror story modern audiences will immediately recognize.

An Enemy of the People, as adapted by Death of a Salesman playwright Arthur Miller, arrives in Memphis courtesy of regional veteran Marler Stone and his newly christened CentreStage Theatre company. It tells the story of Dr. Stockmann, who discovers that his town’s public bath is badly contaminated. He’s initially thanked for his vigilance but ultimately opposed by the very people he sought to protect. Over the course of the play, Stockmann discovers just how hard it can be to stand alone, especially when the truth is unpopular.

At 78, Stone shows few signs of slowing his artistic output. “There are a lot of plays I want to do,” he says, rattling off a list of classic shows ranging from Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge to the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Carousel.

“I want to do things that are relevant,” he says.

Stone marvels that An Enemy of the People was admired both by Miller, a lion of the literary left, and by objectivist icon Ayn Rand. “I wondered why,” he says.

7 P.M. Nashville’s Moon Taxi also earned a spot on Coachella, and their Daybreaker tour sees the band getting a slot on Beale Street Music Fest. Active since 2006, the band played the Late Show with David Letterman and has had television placements from companies like BMW, HBO, the MLB, and the NFL.

MODEST MOUSE

10:30 P.M. Like this year’s other headliners, Modest Mouse is a band that needs no introduction. Formed in 1992, Modest Mouse continually reshapes rock music while simultaneously influencing wave after wave of indie bands. From wellknown tracks like “Float On” to deep cuts from their earlier releases, point to any Modest Mouse album, and a devoted fan will give you something to appreciate.

Lamb of God Returns level for six years, releasing several demos, two split-EPs, and one self-titled, full-length debut in 1999 before a name change to Lamb of God was implemented based on a desire to avoid being misinterpreted as a Satanic metal band. The next album and first to carry the Lamb of God moniker was 2000’s New American Gospel. A progressive combination of rewired and intensified thrash metal informed deeply by Pantera’s mid-tempo groove and breakdowns, New American Gospel appealed out of the gate to a fan base that would grow behind the band’s next two years on the road.

Lamb of God 2003’s As the Palaces Burn attracted some nice reviews in mainstream media outlets like Rolling Stone and scored high in the metal press’ year-end tallies. The Lamb of God sound was well-established by this point and filled a need with its less cartoonish, more streamlined metal onslaught that spoke to both young and old fans of the form, unlike the then-waning silliness of Slipknot or the overt faux intensity of System of a Down. The increased airplay of the album’s three singles laid the groundwork for Lamb of God’s proto-breakthrough, Ashes of the Wake, their first for major label Epic Records. It debuted at No. 27 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of over 35,000 and remains the band’s best-selling back catalog title as it approaches gold certification.

But Lamb of God’s next two albums, 2006’s Sacrament and 2009’s Wrath, would secure the band’s status as a

global force and perhaps the biggest Trojan horse to sneak otherwise mainstream-untenable elements of metal extremity to a wide audience since Pantera’s similar coup during the ’90s. Both album’s debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and had first-week sales of over 60,000 and collectively yielded three Grammy nominations for Best Heavy Metal Performance for “Redneck” (perhaps Lamb of God’s best-known calling card) in 2007, “Set to Fail” in 2010, and “In Your Words” in 2011, respectively.

This period brought many other next-level “firsts,” and the band spent the better part of six years on the road and satiated fans between studio efforts with two live album/DVD titles. In 2010, the band released the 10-year anniversary Hourglass career retrospective that featured a much-drooled-over “Super Deluxe” edition packaged in a big coffin.

The package contained a three-CD anthology, a career-covering vinyl box set, The Art of Lamb of God book, a 4-by-6 “Pure American Metal” flag, and, most notably, a Mark Morton Signature Series Jackson Dominion D2 guitar.

The aforementioned seventh album, Resolution, was released in January of 2012 and added some thrashier guitar riffs and song structures to Lamb of God’s meat-and-potatoes metal to keep things out of an artistic rut.

Then, as covered previously, everything went to hell a few months later, and a short hiatus followed as the band waited for the outcome of Blythe’s case and figured out what to do next. For a minute, Lamb of God’s future as an active band was up in the air, but the five-some returned to the studio, and out came last year’s VII: Sturm und Drang, an album informed by the inevitable influence of Blythe’s situation but also one with more sonic surprises than the band is known for. The record included the distinct vocals of guest Chino Moreno of the Deftones on a track, plus Blythe’s most extended venture into clean singing on the song “Overlord”.

s arguably one of the biggest acts to emerge from the mid-’00s “undergrounding” of high-profile metal, Lamb of God was riding its long and continuing ascent in June 2012 when attention on the band began to increase exponentially on the back of a most unfortunate turn of events. A good six months into the touring cycle behind his band’s seventh studio album, Resolution, Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe was arrested by Czech police on suspicion of manslaughter and charged with “committing intentional bodily harm.”

The charges concerned a concert from two years earlier when a fan sustained head injuries (immediately leading to a coma and eventual death several weeks later) after being pushed from the stage by Blythe. Lamb of God was caught totally by surprise, as they didn’t even remember the specific show and were unaware of the damning European press coverage following the event, or that the Czech police had already investigated and charged Blythe, simply because no one was contacted by the United States Department of Justice after the D.O.J. turned down overseas requests for assistance.

Blythe was swiftly put behind bars in a Czech prison for what remained an open-ended incarceration, due to the challenges of meeting a bail figure that was repeatedly increased. Thus began an unpredictable and authentically dramatic saga unlike any other in metal’s long and dark history of finding itself on the wrong side of the law. In March of 2013, after a six-day trial that could have easily ended badly, the Czech court arrived at a verdict that removed Blythe’s criminal liability regarding the incident.

Many readers might be aware of how things played out, as there was much media coverage and an astonishing amount of support that traversed and transcended the metal community.

KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD AT THE HI-TONE Melbourne, Australia’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard hit the HiTone this Tuesday night in support of their latest LP, Nonagon Infinity. Since forming in 2010, the psychedelic powerhouse has released album after album of interweaving prog rock, working with labels like Castle Face, Heavenly, and, most frequently, Australia’s Flightless Records.

King Gizzard have made a name for themselves by taking the writing approach of bands like Thee Oh Sees and putting it in a blender with a few prescriptions of Adderall. The songs are spastic yet complex, and listening to a complete album by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard can definitely prove to be an aural endurance test. On record, the band’s songs run together seamlessly, but catching the sevenmember band live is where their music is best experienced. Having toured the U.S. multiple times since blowing up in 2013, the band is a finely tuned machine when it comes to their live show, and their unusually large lineup (complete with two drummers) effectively freaks audiences out before completely winning them over.

Touring with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are Geelong, Australia, psych wonders the Murlocs, who are also on Flightless Records. While King Gizzard explore the frenetic elements of psych rock, the Murlocs explore the more traditional, 13th Floor Elevators-esque side of the genre. Both bands are at the top of the greater Australian psych scene, but their different approaches to the same genre are a testament to the versatility of what’s been cooking down under since bands like Tame Impala and Royal Headache opened the door for smaller, independent Aussie acts. ussell Smith, Miss Cordelia’s general manager, was impressed with the store’s history as a leader in the locally sourced food movement, but felt it had missed some key opportunities.

“Having a local meat source is something I was always interested in,” Smith says. “We had the equipment. It was just a question of figuring out how to shift from conventional beef and pork that comes in a box to bringing in sides of beef and whole hogs.”

To that end, Aaron Winters is one of Smith’s secret weapons in the campaign to enhance his store’s image. Winters has been charged with transforming the store’s meat counter into a craft butcher shop stocked entirely with locally sourced meat in addition to a range of house-made sausages, salumis, and smoked delicacies ranging from bacon to spicy tasso ham.

“With his background as a chef, Aaron’s been an awesome fit,” Smith says, describing the shift from buying primal cuts to sides of beef and whole hogs. “His cooking ability allows us to use all the animal — especially with hog because of the things you cure and things you smoke.”

“We only use farmers we know,” Winters says. He’s spent time working at Claybrook Farms, Newman, and Homeplace to determine whether or not the operations are truly sustainable. “I want to know the animals have had a happy life,” he says.

Even the humble ground beef at Miss Cordelia’s is currently being processed from a dry-aged cow. “So it’s not the yuck and the trim that’s been sitting in a bag for six months,” Winters says.

It may not always be evident on grocery store shelves, but there’s so much more to a cow than ribeyes, strips, chuck roasts, and tenderloin. Winters’ array includes lesser-known cuts like the bavette, inside and outside skirts, and spider steaks — the stuff people don’t know because it usually ends up in grind. Similarly, Winters, who trained in Italy, breaks his pigs down in a more European fashion. Nothing goes to waste. Soup bones not being frozen and sold are roasted and turned into rich, house-made stocks. Smoked ham hocks, bacon, and maple breakfast sausage are available all the time.

“I love tasso,” says Winters, who’s made his own version of the South Louisiana delicacy a staple of Miss Cordelia’s meat counter. “People think of it as a super spicy, smoked little chunk of meat that they

throw in greens or red beans. My method is a little bit different, so you can slice and put it on sandwiches without completely blowing your head off.”

Beer brats and sweet Italian sausages are kept in stock due to popular demand, but Winters is always making specialty flavors that rotate in and out and run the gamut from Cajun spice, to an Argentinian chorizo.

“I’m making head cheese, pork terrines, capicola, and chicken liver mousse pâté,” he says, announcing plans to add even more specialty items like house-made ham, finocchiona, and lardo di Colonnata.

Winters and Smith are working together to build synergy between Miss Cordelia’s meat counter and its deli. Although only a few items are currently available, a new sandwich menu is on the works. Future offerings will include a pressed Cuban sandwich with cured Cuban-style pork, sour orange, cilantro, peppers, housemade ham, and pickles.

“I want people to tell me what they want,” says Winters, who enjoys preparing custom sausages and other items for his customers.

“It’s an interesting challenge to make people forget what they think they know about us,” Smith says. “Fair or not, this store has always had a reputation for being expensive. What I’m learning, the longer I’m here, is that the thing we can’t compete on are conventional groceries. I can’t sell Cheerios the way Kroger sells Cheerios.

“But we can do stuff like this that just blows other groceries out of the water, and we can be very affordable about it.”

Patrick Stewart in Green Room and the pizza parlor gig only paid out $8 each. The mohawked promoter, Tad (David Thompson), feels guilty and sets them up with a show at a club 90 miles away where his cousin works. “Just don’t talk about politics, and you’ll be fine,” he warns.

As with everyone else who has ever told a punk band not to talk about politics, his warning falls on deaf ears. When they arrive, they find that the venue where they’re booked is not so much a punk club as it is a white power movement compound hidden in the middle of the Oregon woods. Naturally, they open their set with a cover of the Dead Kennedy’s “Nazi Punks Fuck Off,” which is certainly the punk thing to do, but not the best choice in terms of long-term survival.

Still, by the end of the set, they seem to have won over the crowd and are feeling pretty good about the situation until they return to the green room and find the lead singer of the headlining band standing over a dead girl with a knife in her head.

At this point, Green Room shifts gears from Decline of Western Civilization in the PacNor to a claustrophobic cross between 12 Angry Men and Assault on Precinct 13. Just when it looks like things can’t any worse for the band, Saulnier pulls continued on page 58

But in the long and sordid history of bad shows, I dare say none comes close to what happens to the punk band the Ain’t Rights in director Jeremy Saulnier’s new film Green Room.

the rug out from under them again.

What could be worse than being locked in a room with a murderous, 250-pound neo-nazi named Werm (Brent Werzner) by a pack of eerily disciplined skinheads? How about when Darcy, the leader of the skinheads, shows up, and it’s Sir Patrick Freakin’ Stewart. Darcy calmly takes command like the evil Mirror Universe version of Captain Picard, and the casual brutality of his evil is bone chilling. He effortlessly throws the police off the scent and proceeds to clean up the mess left on his property with the help of a squad of “red laces,” as skinheads who have killed enemies of the movement are known. As the band tries to escape first the room and later the club, they discover the secrets Darcy has been hiding, which explains why he is so eager to wipe out the witnesses.

As you would expect, Stewart’s chilling precision is the film’s acting highlight. Shawkat as the cool-girl bass player sporting an ever-fashionable Dead Kennedy’s logo shirt and Imogen Poots as

Amber, a local punk desperate to escape the skinhead underground, outshine their male compatriots, most of whom read as transparent murder fodder or inhuman killing machines.

Green Room is billed as a “horror thriller,” and Saulnier, whose previous work was the acclaimed indie Blue Ruin, can throw a jump scare with the best of them. But there’s quite a bit of 1970s-era hostage movies like Dog Day Afternoon in Green Room’s DNA, so I would hesitate to call it horror.

The director’s primary concern is ratcheting up the tension, one excruciating turn at a time. His most effective weapon is his grungy sound design that he uses to incorporate wailing feedback as a plot point and the goopy plop of a disemboweling for shock points.

The director clearly has a broad knowledge of and affection for this musical milieu, which makes the whole proceedings feel more real and grounded and helps audiences gloss over the occasional logical lapse. Green Room is punk as hell, and it makes me eager to see Saulnier’s next outing.

My friend Desi is a Southerner stuck in Chicago for 20 years now. He pines for, well, pines. Specifically the piney woods of Mississippi where we grew up. I periodically remind him about humidity, the fact that the bugs are going to be big enough this summer to saddle and ride to work, and that our legislators are more interested in our bathroom habits than paved roads.

I’m not trying to talk him out of it; I’m being realistic. After 20 years the memories of home are more of the misty, water-colored variety. CRAWFISH! SPIDER LILIES! SCREEN DOORS! But I would love for him to move to Memphis so I’d have an opportunity to make him some shrimp and grits. Mine are outstanding.

There is a chicken recipe which has been printed and reprinted and shared a million times. It’s called Engagement Chicken, and it first appeared in Glamour magazine about 30 years ago. Supposedly your boyfriend will propose to you after eating this chicken. I’ve not made this particular chicken, but I’ve made roast chicken with lemon. That’s what this is.

I don’t want to say bad things about this chicken, but I generally eschew any item of food, clothing, or scent that purports to be a marriage trap. It is my foolish belief that marriage is a sacred institution into which both parties should be scared witless to commit themselves. Having said that, I’m aware my husband and I are married because of my shrimp and grits.

We courted each other by fixing dinner. Fast forward a few years, and Chuck’s birthday was approaching. He wanted shrimp and grits. I did not have my own recipe, but I knew there was only one place to go: Oxford. I used John Currence’s recipe as my base. I changed it up a little, but my deepest held conviction about shrimp and grits is that the closest a tomato should get to it is in the salad you serve on the side. Yada yada yada, we were married four months later.

I don’t tell that story so that desperate young women will sear millions of pounds of shrimp in an attempt to walk down the aisle via an unsuspecting stomach. No, I tell this story because I like to take every opportunity I can to brag about my shrimp and grits and because Desi sent me a recipe for a dish which uses — siddown, this is big — Shrimp and grits instant grits. I KNOW! I clutched my pearls, too.

Listen, I’m not going to lie. I’m down with the quick-cooking grits even though, honestly, no kind of grits takes that long to make. But instant? ARE WE ANIMALS? I looked at the comments about this dish expecting to hear a chorus of disdain for instant grits, and there was some of that. But the singers hitting the back of the house were doing so with an old-fashioned grits bashing.

Gross! Grits are disgusting! Shrimp with grits?! To you gritsbashers out there I say, shuddup. Do you eat polenta? Of course you do. Polenta is faincy. A fancy name for grits. It’s all corn mush!

So those — ugh! — tubes of polenta you get in the produce section and take home to be all international? Why? You wouldn’t buy a premade tube of oatmeal would you? It’s all mush like every farmer has eaten for centuries in this country, Europe, Africa, and I could go on.

This is humble food we’re talking about. The great thing about it is that you can dress it up with vegetables, or cheese, or lots of cheese, or cheese and lots of garlic. And you can, I suppose, eat it with cream and sugar, but I don’t know why you’d want to. If you are so inclined as I was, make what the cooking magazine referred to as braised short ribs and root vegetables on a bed of Stilton polenta and garnished with gremolata, but I knew was just pot roast with cheese grits and garnished with lemon zest and parsley.

Maybe the problem isn’t the grits themselves; it’s food with such working-class ties. Eating hand-cut buttermilk scones with Vermont cheddar pimento cheese and house-cured ham is a whole different experience than serving cathead biscuits with your mama’s pimento cheese and country ham. One is not better than the other. You may be more comfortable eating catfish goujons with capered aioli and black-eyed pea caviar, but it’s still fried catfish with tartar sauce and black-eyed pea salad.

Do you really want to associate with people who are so filled with first-world ennui they can’t enjoy a damn bowl of grits? Such people should be thumped soundly and percussively upon the gourd.

Besides, as Desi reminded me, “Telling someone to ‘kiss my polenta’ just doesn’t have the same effect.”
