It’s Election Day as I write this. If the polls are to be believed, the cover of this issue would have Hillary Clinton on it, but we won’t make that decision until late Tuesday night, or maybe even Wednesday morning, after this column has gone to press. Nevertheless, as I look back at this extraordinary campaign year, I think there are several lessons we can take away.

Lesson one: The primary system is irrevocably broken, beginning with the ridiculous tradition of starting the campaign with the Iowa caucuses, where mostly white voters in a small, mostly white state meet in living rooms and gymnasiums to vote on a slate of five to 17 candidates.

The winners of this silliness are declared “front-runners.” Then the whole bunch moves on to another tiny, mostly white state — New Hampshire — and plays out the game again. This process is in no way reflective of the will of the majority of voters in either party. This is how you get a Donald Trump.

I’ve written about this before, but my solution would be to have four primary election dates, one for each time zone, maybe two weeks apart. Candidates could campaign in the east for a few weeks, then move on to the midwest, etc. Scramble the order of the time zones every four years. Make the primaries reflective of the will of a broad majority of the two parties’ voters, not the passions of a motivated fringe element in a single state.

Second, the media are suckers for an outrageous candidate. Donald Trump showed future candidates how to game the press, especially network and cable television. He spent nothing on advertising but received millions of dollars worth of publicity and air time merely by being willing to say anything. Once the national media learned that Trump coverage meant higher ratings clicks, the process accelerated and fed upon itself.

Higher ratings and more website clicks mean more revenue. Trump was a profit driver for Big Media.

Third, fact-checkers are pretty much irrelevant. People will believe what they want to believe, regardless of any evidence to the contrary. One national newspaper reporter kept a daily post of “false things Donald Trump said today.” Most days, it was well over 50. It didn’t matter.

On the final day of the campaign, Trump told a rally audience that he’d once won “Michigan’s Man of the Year” award. Journalists were unable to find any record that such an award existed, much less that Trump won it. The lie wasn’t even mentioned on the national news that evening.

Fourth, we learned which Republicans have integrity, which ones are craven sellouts, and which ones don’t have the courage to be either. Lindsey Graham, John Kasich, Jeb Bush, and many other Republicans were notable for their refusal to support their party’s horrible candidate. Paul Ryan, John McCain, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Chris Christie, and others were notable for their weakness, endorsing a man who had N E WS & O P I N I O N viciously and recklessly insulted them NY TIMES CROSSWORD - 4 and/or their families. Weirich, Raleigh, Recycling A witness paid in secret, a final hurdle for the mall project, and big money goes green.

Witness paid secretly A witness in a murder case was secretly paid by government agents; it’s a fact never revealed to juries or to defense attorneys in court trials for a Memphis man who has maintained his innocence for nearly two decades.

Andrew Thomas was convicted in 2001 of the 1997 shooting death of an armored truck driver. He’s appealed the conviction (and lost) several times. But last week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit heard the case again, this time to consider whether or not open knowledge of a $750 payment to a key witness would have changed the outcome of the trial.

The payment to the witness was made while the U.S. Attorney prosecuted the case. The case became a murder trial when the victim died two years after the shooting. Shelby County District Attorney General (SCDAG) Amy Weirich was the lead prosecutor on Thomas’ murder trial. She did not disclose the fact that the witness had been paid to Thomas’ attorneys or to jury members during the trial. It is not known if Weirich knew about the payment.

Oral arguments were slated to continue this week in the appeals court on Thomas’ case.

Weirich already faces discipline from the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Board of Professional Responsibility (TBPR) for her conduct during the 2009 murder trial of Noura Jackson. Weirich was the lead attorney on the case.

State attorneys say Weirich never reviewed a critical piece of evidence, a handwritten statement from a witness. Therefore, she could not have determined whether or not the evidence would help Jackson’s case, and “failed to exercise appropriate diligence in this matter.”

No charges filed in police shooting death The officers involved in last year’s shooting death of Jonathan Bratcher will not face criminal charges, according to Weirich.

Bratcher, 32, was killed by police in January. He fired at officers after fleeing his vehicle to avoid arrest.

University of Memphis (U of M) leaders are considering a move that would pave a community garden and, yes, put up a parking lot.

The Tiger Initiative for Gardens in Urban Settings (TIGUrS Garden), was established on the east side of the school’s campus in 2009. It provides education to school groups and free, organic produce to students, staff, and community members. But it may be paved to make way for 120 new parking spaces as the university readies construction for a new recreation center.

Word of the move emerged in a story from U of M’s student newspaper, The Daily Helmsman, last week. Since then, the proposal has sparked anger, confusion, and a petition against the move at change.org, which now has more than 1,300 signatures.

“A parking lot is a short-term solution to a long-term problem: the need for a walkable, sustainable university neighborhood,” reads a petition comment from John-Michael Tubbs.

“The garden is a long-term solution to a long-term problem: the need for a sustainable future.”

But U of M president David Rudd said the school was only exploring options at this point, and that it was “dramatically premature” to ask about the garden’s relocation. Rudd said it was “simply wrong” that any decision had been made.

The plan would raze the existing mall building to make way for a new town center that would include a police precinct, a library, a green space, and more.

A tentative agreement has been reached between the city and one of the last remaining property owners in the mall area, said Memphis City Council member Bill Morrison. The agreement only needs the blessing of Shelby County Circuit Court Judge James Russell, who is set to review the matter on Friday, Nov. 18th.

The city council approved a vision plan for the Raleigh Redevelopment Project in November 2013. A year later, the council approved $23.7 million for the transformation project.

“I think it’s a temporary fix,” Buddington said. “The university needs the green spaces that are left. If you pave over the garden there now, you don’t get that back.”

In an email sent last Friday to faculty, students, and staff, Rudd said the university’s goal was to maintain current parking numbers during construction of the recreation center, and that the administration had not developed specific options or established a definitive timeline.

“I recently requested that our Student Government Association discuss and respond to available options, along with sharing any concerns,” Rudd said in the email. “We hope to share with you a detailed parking plan before you depart for the Thanksgiving holiday. The plan will provide details on total number of spaces available pre/post ground breaking, along with specific recommendations to minimize disruption during construction.”

Big green goes green An investment fund spent $3.2 million here to increase Memphis recycling efforts.

Officials announced last week the Closed Loop Fund loaned the amount to the city to aid the transition from a dual-stream recycling system to singlestream recycling.

The city will use the funds to buy 40,000 96-gallon recycling bins. The new, larger carts are expected to help divert 17,000 tons of trash from local landfills annually.

At least 40 percent of homeless young adults identify as LGBTQ, according to the Williams Institute, a Los Angeles think tank focused on sexual orientation and gender identity. Transgender adults are particularly vulnerable in Tennessee, since the state does not allow you to change your biological sex on any identification documents. If it takes a village to raise a child, it certainly takes a village to house an adult, especially one who has experienced unnecessary hardships for identifying as an LGBTQ individual.

OUTMemphis has been galvanizing its own village over the past year in order to get Metamorphosis Project, the housing initiative for LGBTQ adults ages 18-25, up and running.

OUTMemphis’ youth services director Stephanie Reyes confirmed last week that the center is hopeful that the project will officially open its doors in 12 months’ time. Since the announcement of the housing initiative last year, Reyes and the OUTMemphis staff have been busy securing donations of raw materials and raw talent for the project.

“We’ve purchased our land, we had a town hall meeting in Orange Mound (the neighborhood where the project will be located), and we made it through our board of adjustments meeting,” said Reyes, who added that securing funding is the last hurdle to clear.

To date, $60,000 has been raised through a multitude of fund-raisers since the announcement of the initiative one year ago. The remaining amount of funding needed is hard to pinpoint and changes depending on what form — monetary or otherwise — donations come in.

For example, local architect Dell Livingston has made one of the most significant donations with pro-bono supervision of the conversion of shipping containers into efficiency apartments.

“Honestly, I don’t know that we would have even made it this far without Dell’s help,” said Reyes.

At full capacity, the project will be able to house 20 individuals. OUTMemphis intends to have a staff member on hand at all times and plans to provide additional support to residents through community partnerships that can help the displaced youth with resumes, job interviewing skills, and GED tutoring.

Though the project will be the first of its kind for OUTMemphis, it won’t be the first attempt the center has made at addressing the challenges faced by homeless LGBTQ adults, who are often kicked out of their own family homes as a result of their sexual and/or gender identifications.

There are numerous reasons why this state of affairs bodes ill for Tennesseans, even those who lean Republican. And they are the same reasons why exponents of the Tennessee Republican Party used to crow so hard for the existence of a two-party system back in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. It is no accident that there were streaks of progressivism and reform in the state GOP of that time. One-party government had left serious dissidents nowhere else to go, and corruption, which would find its full embodiment in the regime of Democratic Governor Ray Blanton in the late 1970s, was a fact of life beyond ideology.

Such circumstances as the arrogant primacy of the NRA in state-government affairs and the matter this past year of the now expelled Representative Jeremy Durham (R-Franklin), whose conduct exposed the long-standing toleration of predatory sexual conduct in the legislature, demonstrate that a serious challenge to the status quo of the current GOP supermajority is in order, and a regenerated Democratic Party could and should be part of the reform process.

In that context, it is encouraging to note the early signs of what would appear to be serious 2018 gubernatorial campaigns on the part of two notable Democrats, on the part of former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean and another respected mover and shaker from that city, businessman Bill Freeman, who made a foray into Memphis just last week.

We say, have at it, guys! A little competition is in order.

unlikely — oh, let’s call it impossible — that the current Republican supermajority in the General Assembly would be appreciably modified, it was encouraging to see what remains of the seriously weakened Tennessee Democratic Party try to regather itself and make challenges in a goodly number of legislative races.

We say this not for the sake of any party allegiance but in homage to the largely forgone virtues of the two-party system.

There was a time, not too many decades ago, when that principle was run up the flagpole and saluted by all Republicans running for office in Tennessee — everywhere, it should be said, except in large pockets of East Tennessee, where there was no need, since GOP loyalties had dominated there since the Civil War. But in the state at large, Republican loyalty was something of a novelty — literally so in the case of fiddlin’ Roy Acuff, the country music great from points east who became the token GOP gubernatorial nominee in 1948. But ol’ Roy’s Night Train to Memphis was, as everybody knew, destined to stall out somewhere well the other side of Nashville.

Times change, people change, and now it’s Democrats who are trying hard to beg a ride to the state capital. There are only three counties among the state’s 95 — Shelby (Memphis); Davidson (Nashville); and Hardeman (Bolivar) — where the party can be counted on to generate a consistent majority vote for its statewide and national candidates. There are 26 Democrats in the 99-member state House of Representatives; there are five Democrats in the 33-member state Senate.

Marijuana Myths As local debate on decriminalization proceeds, it’s important to separate fact from fiction. that marijuana has an incredibly low toxicity, especially when compared with the over half a million Americans who die every year due to the toxic effects of alcohol, prescription opioids, and nicotine.”

Gerecke goes so far as to suggest that decriminalization may actually have a deterrent effect on use of dangerous drugs: “It’s important to note here that recent research in Colorado and other states in which cannabis is decriminalized, or even legalized, has shown that use of other illicit drugs has declined.”

In Tennessee, even the amount of marijuana used as a standard to impose legal penalties may be overstated. The state deems that possession of 14 grams is the amount at which a misdemeanor occurs, whereas most states set the limit at a range from an ounce (28 grams) to 30 grams.

During the county commission’s debate, Commissioner Heidi Shafer made the claim that marijuana is extremely carcinogenic. However, in the Harm Reduction Journal, which publishes research focusing on the prevalent patterns of psychoactive drug use and the public policies meant to control them, Robert Melamede, a physician, writes that the cells of the lungs are lined with nicotine receptors but do not appear to contain receptors for THC, which may explain why marijuana use has not, in fact, been linked to lung cancer.

As an indication of just how wildly misleading the local case against decriminalization has been, Chief Inspector Mark Kellerhall of the Sheriff ’s Department stated to the commission that a half ounce could have up to a $3,000 street value. Aside from its having no discernible relation to the argument, that misstatement is so ridiculously far from the truth that it should not even have been published as news or allowed to go unchallenged at the commission meeting.

My plea to all public figures, regardless of their viewpoint is: Please just do the research; merely repeating hearsay legends is doing a disservice to the public.

At least temporarily, the Shelby County Commission put itself on the wrong side of history last week when it recorded a vote of 4-7 on the first of three readings of an ordinance to partially decriminalize cannabis. While the resulting vote was different from a positive vote from the Memphis City Council on a similar ordinance, the amount of misinformation on display from opponents during the debate was not.

Back in the 1930s, when “reefer madness” began, misinformation about cannabis was easy to spread because there was little research, and the public didn’t have access to information that we have today.

Now, there is really no excuse for public officials to make blatantly false statements.

During the council’s debate, Police Director Michael Rallings made demonstrably erroneous statements on everything from driving risks to the muchrepeated and much-debunked gateway drug argument to a wildly overstated estimate of how many joints could be rolled out of a half-ounce of marijuana (though, admittedly, the thought of MPD officers sitting around a table rolling doobies is hilarious).

On the issue of driving risks, Mark A. R. Kleiman, an NYU professor specializing in drug and criminal policy issues, said driving while under the influence of cannabis compares to having a noisy child in the back seat, making one perhaps twice as likely to have an accident.

As a point of comparison, Kleiman found that using a hands-free cell phone while driving makes one four times more likely to have an accident.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has also disputed the gateway drug theory as applied to pot. In arguing for the potentially addictive nature of prescription drugs, which might in her estimation lead on to dangerous opioids such as heroin, she was dismissive of equivalent dangers from marijuana: “It’s not like we’re seeing marijuana as a specific gateway.”

Addressing the issue of marijuana decriminalization, Kim Gerecke, chair of the neuroscience program at Rhodes College, is in agreement with that thesis.

As she puts it, “Marijuana has a relatively low addiction rate of about 9 percent.

In contrast, the addiction rate of alcohol is 15 percent, and nicotine is around 32 percent. Importantly, addiction rates to opioids, including prescription painkillers, are about 25 percent.”

Pointing out that there has never been evidence of a death directly attributable to a marijuana overdose, Gerecke says, “research has shown overwhelmingly

s the clock headed ever closer to midnight Tuesday, neither Democrat Hillary Clinton nor Republican Donald Trump could be sure that their would-be presidential chariots wouldn’t soon turn into pumpkins. Their race for the presidency of the United States was that close — too close to call and far closer than had been thought possible by the nation’s pollsters and pundits, who by and large had foreseen a fairly comfortable Clinton victory.

Though the first returns from the key battleground state of Florida were ambivalent, auguring a tight contest between Democrat Clinton and Republican Trump, the GOP nominee finally pulled away decisively in the race for that state’s 29 electoral votes.

Trump would eventually win Ohio and and North Carolina, the latter of which had been regarded as a toss-up. Even Virginia, which seemed destined to end up blue in the end, in Clinton’s column, had teetered in Trump’s direction for much of the evening.

More ominously for Clinton, not 12 only Michigan, site of last-minute

Hail Mary efforts by Trump, but the neighboring Midwestern state of Wisconsin, which had been regarded as safe for the Democratic nominee, were tilting toward Trump. The specter existed, in case the two states ended up being divided between the candidates (increasingly a best-case scenario for Clinton), of a virtual tie that would have to be decided by the GOPmajority House of Representatives.

Suddenly it was Clinton, not Trump, who had to draw to an insight straight in order to maintain her ever-shrinking hopes of prevailing. The bottom line was that Trump was everywhere doing

better than expected and against all advance odds, had a sight-path toward an upset win.

Amid reports that election-day voting in key states had been robust (like previous totals in those states with early voting), CNN’s first exit poll, of voters at large in the nation, came in just after 4 p.m., CST. Omitting specific mention of either candidate, the poll demonstrated that those persons surveyed leaned toward rewarding experience as against change and that 88 percent of them had made their choices before the last week — before, that is, Trump’s prospects had briefly

spiked because of the FBI’s now-yousee-it, now-you-don’t renewal of its inquiry into Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state.

Both findings had seemed to be good omens for the former secretary, and so, for that matter, was the professed indifference of those polled to whether their chosen candidate emanated a sense of empathy with voters. At no point during the long campaign was that considered one of Clinton’s strong suits —nor Trump’s for that matter, though the size and boisterousness of his campaign crowds attested to his undeniable magnetism on the stump.

It was an odd contest, one between two candidates who had survived their primary elimination contests despite each having record high undesirable ratings in various polls. Neither of the two best-known “third party” candidates, Libertarian Gary Johnson or the Green Party’s Jill Stein, had been able to wean away significant numbers of voters from the two major-party nominees, Clinton and Trump. Theirs was the contest that counted.

opportunity “open-borders” rhetoric worked to the advantage of other nations, while Sanders’ protectionist instincts on the issue may actually have been more hard-nosed and realistic.

On the other side of the political fence, Trump began his competition for the Republican nomination against 16 rivals who had more or less identical positions in favor of free trade, tax cuts, a confrontational foreign policy, diminished federal regulation, recycled supply-side economics, law-andorder, etc. — all the cookie-cutter items in the GOP playbook. That these particular cookies had grown stale and unappetizing — crumbs on the table for those whom loser Mitt Romney in 2012 had stigmatized as the 47 percent — was something his opponents missed.

Their catechism was not his. Indeed, it can probably be said that he had — and has — no fixed principles. Notoriously, Trump seemed indifferent to issues per se, and was even uninformed about

advocacy in 2011 and 2012 of the “birther” nonsense (i.e., the notion that Barack Obama had been born in Kenya, not the U.S.A., and, therefore, was ineligible to be holding his office of president. It manifested Trump’s willingness, for better or for worse, to wander way off the beaten path (in this case, inarguably for the worse).

But consider some of Trump’s unRepublican heresies of the 2015-16 election season: He was as prone as Bernie Sanders (and more so by far than Hillary Clinton) to attack Wall Street; he was Bernie-like again in his vehement denunciation of free trade deals; he was probably within his rights to insist that he had opposed George W. Bush’s Iraq war (his supposed assent to the war in a 2012 interview with Howard Stern was a tentative thing — a grudging acquiescence to a point-blank question and one that he would repudiate in short order).

He surely deserves props for a kind of forthrightness or chutzpah (pick one)

wounded candidates focused their bids for the Presidency on personal attacks against each other on two matters as paradoxically revealing as they were irrelevant to the larger issues.

Clinton went after Trump for his reprehensible and genuinely shameful attitudes and actions vis-à-vis women — all suddenly and conveniently on public view in the weeks before the election.

Trump attacked Clinton in the most vicious way on the subject of her admittedly fast-and-loose use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state, finally adopting the “Lock Her Up” mantra of his crowds that he had only winked at in the cacophony of his Cleveland convention.

For whatever reason (and both sides at various times had their suspicions) FBI Director James Comey played Emily Litella on a Bureau investigation of the case — raising doubts about Clinton, then dismissing them, then raising them and going “Never mind” again, all in rapid succession.

them and willfully so, which is one reason — along with his TV celebrity and made-for-media persona — why his performance in the organized Republican debates inevitably turned on crowd-pleasing scorn and personal insults applied to his rivals. They could not match him in this regard, and when, like Florida Senator Marco Rubio (“Little Marco,” as Trump dubbed him), they tried to, their rate of descent into irrelevance was actually sped up.

This is not to say that Trump could not comprehend and adopt — even believe in — specific political positions. Through most of his highly public career as a New York playboy and mega-rich developer, he had been a typical Manhattanite: pro-choice, for example, and, while clearly owning a sense of male sexual entitlement, undisturbed by the vagaries of sexual orientation. As late as the early years of this decade, he was a professed admirer of the Clintons, Bill and Hillary both. Indeed, they kept social company.

A political warning sign was Trump’s

in having accused Bush of lying to get us into war during one of those televised set-to’s with other Republicans. And, in his acceptance address at Cleveland this past summer, Trump made a point of sounding out every initial loud and clear as he promised to uphold the rights of the nation’s LGBTQ community.

For all that, Trump was the loosest of pistols, self-indulgent and undisciplined, and the campaign would find him firing one loud blank after another in frustration and in defiance of successive campaign teams that tried to get him on message, any message. The one he finally absorbed, under pressure, was uninspiringly close to the GOP boilerplate — tax breaks for the wealthy, death to Obamacare, hiking up the military — that he had scoffed at to begin with. In the process, he compromised his opportunity to build upon the white, working-class, largely male constituency he had managed to galvanize.

So it was that, in the late stages of the presidential campaign, two

In the last week of the campaign, the nation’s political pundits, who had come to sound like repetitious myna birds in the face of what had begun to look like a Hillary runaway, found their voices again with the reappearance of what looked passably like a neck-and-neck drama.

Another factor that lent a renewed semblance of suspense to the proceedings was the “homecoming” effect that normally occurs as presidential campaigns approach their conclusion: Third-party pretenders began to lose their steam, and lukewarm cadres of the two major parties came back to home base in a show of unity behind nominees continued on page 15

One half of the final pairing — Democrat Clinton — was more or less inevitable from the start, given the continued existence of an extensive political network devoted to her and to the fairly sizeable Clinton circle at large; given the fact of residual public yearning to crack the still-intact glass ceiling excluding women from the nation’s ultimate office; given her continued prominence and professional service as secretary of state (and the dutiful deference she showed in the process to Obama, who had conquered her in the act of smashing a long-standing ceiling of his own).

And given, finally and perhaps most importantly, the fact of an undiminished, perhaps even amplified personal ambition that was already extraordinarily large.

That she came in for an unexpectedly intense and long-lasting primary challenge from Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont may, in those circumstances, have seemed a bizarre quirk of fate to some. A Jewish septuagenarian and professed socialist? An official independent? C’mon, man! What kinda script is that?

Yet, what the scoffers and disbelievers missed was the simple fact that Sanders, who had certain inspiring avuncular qualities as well, was determined to destroy an even more formidable and enduring ceiling than Obama and Hillary Clinton had confronted — that which protected monolithic capital wealth from assault and ensured, to one degree or another, that there would always be an economic inequality that was systemic and intractable.

There should have been no surprise that a legion of idealistic young voters, joined by long-of-tooth survivors of various prior lefty causes and their upto-the-minute counterparts would rise to Sanders’ standard — especially since Hillary had so clearly cozied up to the bastions of big money, both for pragmatic and, it would seem, ideological reasons.

She was a reformer of sorts, an undoubtedly sincere exponent of diversity in all its forms — by race, by gender, by sexual orientation, what-haveyou. Her critics on the left conceded as much, but they saw her mission to be that of redistributing the usual proceeds, the limited remnants of opportunity that the have-nots could, with luck, lay claim to in a stratified economy.

The ongoing squeeze of the middle class, the static nature of wages, the widening income gap, and the loss of manufacturing jobs to low-wage workers in free-trade partner nations — all this gave legs to the Sanders campaign and eventually forced Clinton to move enough in the direction of his issues to supplement her pre-existing political advantages.

One of the myths of the Democratic race was that Clinton was the practical thinker and Sanders the romantic, but trade was an area where her equal-

about whom they may have harbored serious doubts previously.

In 2016, both Clinton and Trump benefited from the effects of this inevitable last look. A contributing factor was the realization on each side that, as got repeated from time to time during the campaign, “down-ballot” races for the House of Representatives and, especially, the Senate were at stake in the presidential outcome. Even more importantly, given the gridlock that had virtually shut down Congress as a functioning institution, was the fact that the next president would have the opportunity to appoint anywhere from one to four new Justices to the Supreme Court, the one arena of American government where dynamic social change could still occur.

Lost in all the ad hominem fuss of the presidential campaign was a whole panoply of legitimate issues, ranging from the economic inequality that Sanders had managed to highlight to what may have been the most urgent — and most ignored — issue of all, the question of global warming. Indeed, the neglected problem of climate change remains the foremost of several lingering questions that the new President and the new Congress will have to puzzle out solutions to. Others include:

is neither a Republican nor a Democrat, interfered with our elective system in cahoots with Wikileaks and needs to be held to account? For that matter, what do we do about his continual destabilizing presence in the Middle East or his unrelenting pressure on his western border?

Trade: There would likely have been no Donald Trump (and there may have been no Bernie Sanders) but for the unavoidable reality of the nation’s changing trade relationship to numerous upstart nations, with China and India forecast as the most significant longterm rivals.

Energy: There is still the urgency of

finding environmentally sustainable means to replace polluting fossil-fuel sources.

And anybody who thinks nuclear energy is the answer needs to go Google such formerly well-known terms as “the China syndrome” and “Three Mile Island.”

Race relations, terrorism, and law enforcement: To understand why these concepts belong together, just reflect on the Catch-22 whereby reasonable concerns have arisen about the overmilitarization of local police while, at the same time, the threat of terrorist strikes argues for an enhanced ability for paramilitary response.

A final thought: If there is a bright side on the American political scene, it is the

Syria: The vicious, multi-sided war rages on in that devastated land, with no solution in mind, either about ending the conflict itself or in dealing with the stream of refugees.

Immigration: Beyond the theatrical dilemma of wall-or-no-wall remains the simple question: Is this a real, enduring problem? Or did the alleged flood from Mexico really begin to resolve itself way back with the bursting of the housing balloon that lured so many would-be workers across the border?

Health care: All right, as Bill Clinton (somewhat indiscreetly for his side) noted, Obamacare has some flaws. So what gets done to improve or replace it: Something or nothing?

The income gap: It really is there. Are we going to address it now? Or will we obscure it again with another full set of red herrings?

The Russians: Now that the election is over and we have a winner, can we acknowledge that Vladimir Putin, who

Though they still try, it is increasingly harder for politicians to play bait-and-switch with the electorate, promising to do all they can to uphold certain long-cherished “values” while ignoring those promises in office and pursuing private economic agendas instead. The fact of change in the social sphere — in everything from Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits to the unchallenged acceptance of LGBT citizens in positions of public responsibility — is unmistakable and probably irreversible.

Now, it’s time: Strike up a chorus of “Hail to the Chief.” And cross your fingers.

What is Micro Championship Wrestling (MCW)? Founder and owner Johnny G. describes it as “90-minutes of highflying action.” High being relative as all MCW wrestlers are under five feet tall. “We do all the same stuff the big guys do in the WWE,” he says, “but we add a twist of comedy to it. We want it to be a great time for people of all ages. Doesn’t matter who you are, wrestling’s one of those things everybody digs.”

MCW’s based out of Tampa, Florida, but its cast of grapplers comes from all over the country. “You’ve got to find and train little guys who are athletic enough,” Johnny G. says. “We have basic tryouts. If somebody comes in, and they’re workable and have a good attitude, we’ll bring them on tour with us, put them in a little spot, and teach them as we go. It’s on-the-job training. Regular [independent] wrestlers are weekend warriors. They train all year and maybe get some gigs on the weekends, so they’re happy. If they have a good year, they’ll work 50 times. Our guys work 300 times a year.”

Lots of wannabe wrestlers find MCW because they’ve always dreamed of being a wrestler. “Like Lieutenant Dan,” Johnny G. says. “He was still in school when his mother paid for him to come try out.” Dan took a small role after graduation and has become one of the show’s big attractions.

Johnny G. knows that touring shows like his have big challenges. The audiences don’t know the wrestlers. They don’t know the story lines. They don’t know who’s bringing the heat or who’s taking it.

“We know we’ve got to tell the whole story in 90 minutes,” Johnny G. says. “And it’s a good story, too.”

By Chris Davis Ryan Kathman teaches at St. Benedict. He’s also an actor and the creator of One Ham Manlet, a comedy-forward solo take on Hamlet currently on stage at Theatre Memphis. The words are Shakespeare’s but reduced from its nearly four-hour original length to a hearty, 90-minute Shakespeare sauce. “The thing theater has over film, and it’s not embraced enough, is the audience’s imaginations,” he says, describing his approach to the source material. “We want them to fill in the gaps.”

Kathman teaches his students that actors sometimes need to make their own opportunities. He originally performed One Ham Manlet for them. The solo show is, in some measure, the teacher taking his own advice. He knew he wasn’t getting younger and wondered if anybody else might give him a chance to play Hamlet. Or Ophelia, for that matter. Polonius? Horatio? The famous skull?

“I’m one of those people who sometimes thinks it’s unfortunate that we categorize Shakespeare’s plays into comedies and tragedies,” Kathman says. One of his goals from the beginning was to highlight just how funny tragedy can be. “The best productions of Shakespeare I’ve seen have embraced a blend,” he says, hoping that playing many characters with many voices affords comic opportunities while playing into one of the play’s big questions — is Hamlet mad?

One Ham Manlet isn’t just 90 minutes of Kathman talking to himself. He also fights himself too. And puts on puppet shows. And … whatever it takes.

“What makes what I’m doing unique is how I can wink at the conventions of a one-man show and find theatrical solutions to problems like, how do you have a sword fight with yourself? How do you have a play within the play? How do you have the appearance of a ghost?”

ot many popular musicians, regardless of genre, remain consistently prolific for over three decades behind a body of work defined by its unique balance of artistic veracity and success of the household-name variety. Even rarer is such an artist who frames his 60th birthday with one of the highest profile, most creatively relevant as well as critically acclaimed years in said career. But that’s exactly how 2016 has played out for Dwight Yoakam, perhaps mainstream country’s longest established purveyor of rugged individualism who hit the big 6-0 less than three weeks ago on the 23rd of October.

Just a month earlier, Yoakam released his 20th studio fulllength, Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…, which features 11 bluegrass reinterpretations of songs from his back catalog with one rather notable exception: a similarly styled cover of “Purple Rain” that was recorded as an impromptu gesture of mourning as Yoakam and band received the tragic news on April 23rd (their third day in the studio) of this year.

Per an interview with Rolling Stone, Yoakam was originally made uncomfortable after the fact by his band’s cover of the Prince classic, but he was encouraged to include it on the album (it’s the closing track and was released as the second promotional single) by former Warner Bros. Records president

Yoakam’s resume as a respected TV and film actor was also bolstered this year by roles in Amazon Studios’ eight-episode, straight-to-web legal thriller Goliath (reuniting him with his Sling Blade costar Billy Bob Thornton), the “Bar Fights” episode of Drunk History that aired just a week prior, and a second-billed turn

Dwight Yoakam has been a country music outlier from the start, when his organic honky tonk and country-rock stylings were considered commercial kryptonite against the ultra-slick, postCountrypolitan urban cowboy sound and aesthetic with which the industry was enamored during the early ’80s (essentially responsible for country’s first true wide-scale acceptance into mainstream popular culture). Yoakam’s understandable disenchantment with Nashville took him to L.A., where he focused on playing venues favored by that scene’s underground roots-rock and punk bands, sharing bills with the Blasters, Los Lobos, and X before self-financing his debut album.

Yoakam has also regularly displayed pretty good taste in noncountry covers by releasing versions of the Clash’s great pop moment, “Train in Vain,” as well as Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me.” Dwight Yoakam, Wednesday, November 16th at the Horseshoe Casino.

BILAL LIVE AT THE HI-TONE This Wednesday night, New York singer Bilal will take over the Hi-Tone with locals Marco Pavé and JuJu Bushman. Bilal (full name Bilal Sayeed Oliver) released his debut album 1st Born Second in 2001, a record that featured production by Dr. Dre and Raphael Saadiq and included the hit single “Soul Sista.” The album also featured A-list guests like Mos Def and Common, and immediately garnered Bilal comparisons to Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Sly and the Family Stone.

Following the success of 1st Born Second, Bilal began working on his sophomore follow-up Love for Sale. The album was intended to showcase a different side of the up-and-coming New York singer, but thanks to a leak that released the entire record online months before the scheduled release date, Interscope Records shelved the album and Love for Sale never saw the light of day. Fast forward 10 years, and Bilal finally released his sophomore album Airtight’s Revenge, this time on the independent label Plug Research.

The album was met with favorable reviews and marked the beginning of a much more productive period for Bilal, as he released the albums A Love Surreal in 2013 and In Another Life late last year. New chefs at Folk’s Folly, Interim, and Bounty.

W

hen one chef leaves, another steps in to take his or her place, bringing his or her experience, enterprise, and general tenor to the venue. There’s been some diversification in the top brass department across the Memphis restaurant landscape of late. Here’s a round-up of some of the changes, from institutions old and new to new(er) kids on the block.

Max Hussey has cooked Cajun cuisine at Emeril’s New Orleans and barbecue in San Francisco (where he won a Top 30 BBQ Restaurants in the Country designation) and even studied Indian cuisine under an Awa

(grandmother).

He was imported to Memphis in 2015 to steer the ship at eighty3 in the Madison Hotel but found himself restless enough to make the transition to what he heard was the legendary Folk’s Folly. Eventually.

“When the position first opened [at Folk’s Folly], I balked,” Hussey says.

“I felt like I still had work to do at the Madison.”

The second time he had the chance, though, he definitely jumped.

“They’ve had servers working there for 36 years and line cooks for 22,” he says. “Nobody has that kind of longevity Moving on up — Max Hussey is the executive chef at Folk’s Folly.

In addition to adding patio seating, Saturday brunch, and a bar menu, Casey has put a duck duo on the menu, with seared duck breast, confit leg, and homemade sweet potato pudding.

They’re unveiling their new menu this week, and soon will be baking their own gluten-free bread, which will add more choices to the brunch items.

Since taking over, Krog has started his own wine dinner, getting to play with limited-release products from local vendors once a month and serving the specialities to 16 lucky gastronomes in the restaurant’s private dining room.

“I did that immediately,” Krog says.

“It offers a challenge to me and the staff, and I get a chance to serve something you can’t get at every restaurant.”

His goals are to “continue to elevate the food in the building” with “the best kitchen in town” and keep his vendors as close to home as possible.

Speaking of Interim. Kramer left the space on Sanderlin in 2014 to open Bounty on Broad. More recently, he left Memphis to pursue his culinary dreams in the PNW and while at it, leaving a

He’s been able to do things like make watermelon or pumpkin caviar as a garnish or add black cardamom to the collard greens.

“I do love being creative,” he says.

“I enjoy bringing new techniques and products and different styles to the weekly specials.”

Dave Krog made a return to Interim, but this time a bit further up in the kitchen hierarchy. He started out as sous chef at the sleek and elegant eatery, leaving in the fall of 2015 for the Terrace at River Inn. He’s been executive chef at the nine-year-old restaurant — which takes its name from serving as an interim restaurant after Wally Joe closed shop in the space in 2007 and Jackson Kramer took the helm — since this spring.

the French drink when they don’t want to talk about wine, thus freeing them up to go on about sex, food, and American foreign policy. I gather they disapprove of the latter.

If you live near Buster’s liquors, go there and stand before their wall of French wine. If the prices shock you, turn your head down slightly and start there. It’s a solid collection of Côtes du Rhône for under $20. As Mrs. Murff has pointed out, I am, in fact, the cheapest man currently living (she’s got me there). I picked out three at $14.99 each.

A Parallèle 45 is made in Tain l’Hermitage — which again sounds grander than it really is — it’s just a small town near a big hill. Because this is France, said hill has a very old story about a Frankish knight returning from the Crusades a gravely wounded war hero.

As a reward for his service, the queen of France allowed him to live there to mend his wounds. He never left. The villagers knew he was up there by himself and called him, sensibly, the Hermit.

Hence the name of the hill. When Craig Brewer does a movie about an off-the-grid lunatic, it’s not nearly so romantic. At any rate, Parallèle 45 is fruit-forward and with some spice to make it interesting. There is a touch of alcohol heat from the grenache, but the syrah gives it a bit of lightness. Saint Cosme comes in at the same price point, but the beauty here is that they don’t taste exactly alike. My favorite of the three was Famille Perrin, a Côtes du Rhône Villages, which is a slightly higher classification for the same price. There is less heat and some spice that doesn’t make itself quite so obvious. It’s a full flavor without being heavy.

In short, quit being a slave to the varietals, and take a trip with some blended French beauties.

Sure, it’s a bit mysterious, but in the words of the Good Doctor Hunter Thompson, “Buy the ticket, take the ride.”

rior to the Civil War, one of the biggest wineproducing regions in America was — wait for it — Missouri. The grape was Norton. Prohibition wiped the slate clean, so American wine-making, in a modern sense, is less than 100 years old and only seriously got started about the time the Beatles released Revolver.

On the other hand, the first wines to come out of France’s Rhône Valley predate the Romans. While the French take wine production very seriously, drinking the stuff is so ingrained in the culture that they’ve stopped being in awe of it. Sort of like with American tweens and the magic of Instagram.

Despite this, though, many Americans shy away from French wine. It may be a simple matter of taste: Most Old World wines don’t tend to hit the senses with a full frontal assault like the New World ones do. Part of the problem is, I suspect, simple translation: Everything sounds so damn existential in French. They are always going about the terroir of their wine — its sense of place. Actually, it just means dirt plus weather. To demystify the concept, just drive down Hwy 61 through Clarksdale — which is a three-hour round trip of weapons-grade dirt, plus weather, plus sense of place.

The other problem is more down to terroir, as it were.

New World wines are labeled by grape varietals (merlot, pinot noir, malbec), while French wines are nearly all blended styles sold by region. Americans like to know exactly what we are getting, and we like it spoken in ’Mericun. In practice, though, French regions stick to certain styles that have been governed by tradition and environment and, since 1932, the Appellation Contrôlée (AC). Under that umbrella is a fair bit of variation, but that’s where it gets fun.

You could do a lot worse than begin this adventure with the Rhône valley’s Côtes du Rhônes. This is what

L

ittle Men proves Ira Sachs directs actors better than almost anyone else working in film today. Sachs doesn’t rehearse his actors before they come onto the set, but that doesn’t imply a lack of preparation on his part. The first step in getting career-best performances from people like John Lithgow and Alfred Molina is a spot-on instinct for casting. For example, when preparing for 2014’s Love Is Strange, he discovered that Lithgow and Molina were old friends, and he knew that even though both actors are straight, they would be perfect to play the long-committed gay couple whose lives are thrown into turmoil when they are finally able to marry. Little Men, which finishes a trilogy of Sachs films about male relationships that began with 2012’s Keep the Lights On, starts off with a strong foundation of perfect casting from top to bottom. The lead duo are Theo Taplitz as Jake Jardine, the shy, 13-year-old whose parents’ move from Manhattan begins the story; and Michael Barbieri as Tony Calvelli, the outgoing, first-generation Brooklynite who immediately recognizes a kindred spirit.

Jake’s dad Brian is played by Greg Kinnear, from whom Sachs wrings an unexpected depth of emotion. Brian is an actor whose father Max dies, leaving him and his sister Audrey (Talia Balsam) the building in Brooklyn where he lived. The building comes with a spacious apartment and a single tenant, a dress store owned by Leonor Calvelli (Paulina García). When Max bought the house, his Brooklyn neighborhood was quiet, working class,

and not very desirable. By the time the Jardine family moves in, it’s in the midst of a real estate boom, pushing the average rents on the street five times higher than what Max was charging Leonor.

Sachs has been recognized as perhaps the greatest queer filmmaker of his generation, but there has always been an underlying class consciousness in his work. Little Men brings those concerns to the forefront. Jake and Michael quickly become best friends, but there’s no suggestion of romantic attraction between the two teens. Tony clearly likes girls, and one of his best scenes involves his getting his first taste of rejection when the girl he’s crushing on informs him she’s into older guys. After giving a look like he’s been hit in the stomach with a sledgehammer, Tony gathers himself up and says, “Thank you for your honesty”—which, not coincidentally, was the title of the retrospective series New York’s Museum of Modern Art ran in Sachs’ honor this summer.

Jake and Tony bring out the best in each other. Jake begins the film avoiding eye contact with his public school classmates and ends with a developed set of social skills. Tony takes Jake’s commitment to his drawings and discipline in schoolwork, and the aspiring actor flourishes, as seen in a blistering scene in an acting class run by Mauricio Bustamante. But as the two only children grow closer, raw economics conspire to pull them apart. FILM REVIEW By Chris McCoy nowhere fast, and his sister Audrey insists on raising Leonor’s rent to levels the store can’t sustain. Jake and Tony’s doomed friendship becomes a metaphor for the vanishing multiethnic, economically varied community in Brooklyn that inspired Jane Jacobs’ The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

Sachs’ and co-writer Mauricio Zacharias’ ability to imbue a simple story about a couple of tween boys bonding over video games with such depth of subtext is breathtaking. Even the way they get into and out of scenes brings unexpected joy. Sachs and cinematographer Óscar Durán’s camera is always in exactly the right place, never sacrificing clarity even as the framing and staging veers wildly unconventional.

Molina makes a cameo as Leonor’s lawyer, and even his minor turn is brilliant.

Kinnear delivers the sneakiest performance of the film, surrounded by loving family, but also alone, uncertain about his action, and ultimately denied any sort of lasting satisfaction. It may not rise to the emotional highs of Love Is Strange, but Little Men is a beautiful, complex work that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Hello, people of the future.

By the time you read this, we will have elected a new president. I hope you’ll be reading this and that Shit Creek hasn’t escaped its embankments and flooded us with millions of tons of Clinton emails and Donald J. Trump neckties. I hope Russia hasn’t decided to invade us while we weren’t looking, because the only thing I know about survival came from watching Red Dawn, and I’m not really cut out for the having-to-pee-in-the-woods way of life. I hope we haven’t woken up to riots.

I haven’t been one of the ones saying that if Trump wins, I’m going to Canada. I’m too lazy for that kind of commitment. My passport’s expired. I’m not stockpiling ammo. I can’t ever remember what gauge the guns are, so I’d end up with a closet full of the wrong kind, and I don’t think I’d be good at selling shotgun shells on the black market because I’m not one of those people who always knows a guy. I’m not moving out into the woods. Sure, we talked about it, but I just got a YMCA membership so I want to get my money’s worth from that. Also, I just bought a bunch of produce, and I’m not sure how techy the Canadians are about bringing collards into the country. Let’s not forget they sell milk in bags. I actually haven’t decided if that’s a positive or a negative.

My brother-in-law lives in The Hague, and we talked about crashing with him. I mean, all the Dutch seem concerned about legislating is the wearing of veils and headscarves, so I guess it must be pretty quiet over there. The problem is I have no balance, and riding a bike everywhere would not be good for me. Or anyone within a three-mile radius of me. Oh, and also I believe that clothing isn’t something a government should regulate unless one is serving in an army, and I’m pretty committed to that whole freedom of religion thing, so it’s really no good.

I just Googled “what to do if Trump wins” and got a list of celebrities who said they were leaving if Trump is elected. Barbara Streisand, Raven-Symoné, Miley Cyrus, George Lopez, Chelsea Handler, and Amy Schumer are a few. In the interest of being fair and balanced, it’s good to know there might be something positive from a Trump reign. If Clinton won, the Oath Keepers have promised Civil War. I wonder if I am waking up to an America where Miley Cyrus is tweeting about weed from Cape Breton? I’m not entirely uncomfortable with that.

I think this morning we all woke up relieved the election is over. I think we woke up tired.

I think we woke up wondering if we need to push the credit card payment back to make the mortgage on time. I probably woke up this morning realizing I forgot to get coffee. I probably woke up because my dog was whining to go out. My husband probably woke up because I accidentally popped him in the head because I was dreaming that I was in a fistfight with a beaver (that has actually happened). We all woke up this morning just like we have hundreds of mornings before, and we’ll fall in bed tonight just like the hundreds of nights before. I’m not saying the election didn’t matter. I’m saying I’m trying really hard not to quote the Who about new bosses and old bosses because it seems trite.

My father told me never to vote against anything or anyone.

Vote for something or someone. I was able to do that this year, just like I’ve been able to since my first Presidential Smackdown in 1992. Some years it’s harder than others, but no one ever said democracy was easy. If it were, everybody would have one. I don’t mind that other countries roll their eyes at us. It’s not like they don’t have shenanigans. Milk in bags, remember? Italy elected a porn star to parliament. North Korea’s run by the kid who sat in the back of your math class and ate his own boogers.

There are people in Britain who honestly didn’t know that voting to leave the European Union really meant they would leave the European Union.

Perhaps we’ll see how close we came to ruin and make better choices next election cycle. Maybe we’ll realize all politics is local and start making better choices at home, which will eventually trickle up to better national choices. Of course, maybe every reality “star” will see how easy it is to come close to the presidency, and we can look forward to Honey Boo Boo 2032 billboards.

Here in Memphis, we’ll go on grinding. It’s what we do.
