New New Bridge Design

was placed in remembrance of those impacted by violent crime. It would be removed at the start of construction, safely stored, and relocated approximately 100 feet south of its current location when construction is complete, TDOT and ARDOT said.

The trees would be replanted near the monument.

The plan would also remove and relocate the “Memphis & Arkansas Poem Marker” from the existing bridge.

It would also install a new naming monument for the new bridge.

Some improvements promised under the earlier plan have been scaled back. A proposed 10-footwide path would now loop through Crump Park rather than directly connect the park to Martyrs Park and the Big River Crossing trailhead.

TDOT and ARDOT said existing sidewalks and paths are now adequate for those connections but could be supplemented by signs or pavement markings.

The new bridge would stretch about 1.6 miles between Memphis and Arkansas, with a broad, straight deck suspended from towers by cables. Its main span would stretch more than a quarter-mile across the Mississippi River.

The new bridge would carry two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, four lanes total. They would have 10foot shoulders on both the inside and outside of the lanes.

The project is backed by a $393.75 million federal grant from the Bridge Investment Program created by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Tennessee and Arkansas have each committed up to $200 million toward the replacement.

A

new design for the I-55 replacement bridge would take slightly less of E.H. Crump Park than originally expected.

The new $954.4 million bridge, called Kings’ Crossing, would completely replace the 75-year-old Memphis-Arkansas Bridge, also known as the I-55 or “old” bridge, which would be demolished.

Transportation officials say the existing bridge needs replacing because it does not meet current seismic standards and was not designed to handle current and projected traffic and truck volumes. The new bridge would be built to modern seismic standards and is expected to begin construction in 2027.

A public notice from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) says the new design eliminates auxiliary lanes — often on and off ramps — from the project, shrinking the bridge width by a little more than 29 feet. TDOT also decided to build a full-height retaining wall along the bridge, instead of a partial-height wall. The changes were made “to improve cost efficiency and constructability.”

Together, these changes would take up about 1.26 acres of the park, about 30 percent of its 4.3-acre total. The original plan from last year would have taken slightly more than 2 acres of the park, about half.

The existing parking lot and the portion of the park south of the proposed right of way will remain open throughout construction, the agencies said.

The changes would impact a Commission Against Senseless Killings, Inc. (CASK) monument and its two trees. The monument

hile you were out enjoying the Labor Day weekend, the president of the United States, apparently having nothing better to do, went on a 10-hour posting spree on his Truth Social account. What follows is a list of some of the dozens of AI memes he put online last Sunday. See if you can figure out which ones he posted and which ones I made up: A video of himself changing “New Mexico” on a state road sign to “New America”; a picture of the moon with the words “The Moon is Ours!”; a video of himself blowing up planet Earth; a video of himself walking through Washington, D.C., with a glow-eyed robot army and the text, “They Will Never Sleep Again”; a video of himself replacing the word “Taco” on a Taco Bell logo with the word “Burger”; an image of himself in the Oval Office in front of a computer, with text stating that he “made Hundreds of Billions of Dollars on Stocks, and many other type Holdings, for the USA”; a video depicting massive explosions on an island with the words, “Bye bye, Kharg!”; an image of himself with the body and costume of the late Hulk Hogan, holding an American flag and wearing a MAGA headband; an image of himself sitting next to President George Washington in the Oval Office; an image of himself riding next to President George Washington on horseback; an image of Robert De Niro holding a shirt that reads, “Trump is my president”; an orange map of Iran altered to the shape of his profile; a heroic image of himself with the text, “Greatest President Ever!”

Give up? As a matter of fact, Trump posted all the above posts except for the one with him changing the Taco Bell logo, which I made up — but which could easily be true by the time you read this.

The Sunday fantasy spree followed a real-world spree last week wherein Trump got peeved and unilaterally decided he had the right to change the centuries-old Indigenous name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. He did so because Canada refused to let the United States dictate what other countries it could trade with and declined demands to no longer require the French language to be included on packaging. (It should be noted that Google Maps and Apple Maps quickly bent the knee to Trump’s non-binding whim — no doubt at their tech overlords’ orders — and changed the name on their apps to Lake America. MapQuest was still holding the line for Lake Ontario as I write this.)

At any rate, this week I fully expect Trump to change “French toast” to “American toast,” demand that “Canadian bacon” be changed to just “bacon,” and outlaw the use of the word “eh.” No word yet on Trump’s plans for Belgian waffles or Tex-Mex cuisine, though I’m hearing that city leaders in my hometown of Mexico, Missouri, are getting nervous.

So let’s review: Despite the fact that the country is in a “war” with no end in sight and running out of missiles, that oil and gas and food prices are skyrocketing, that grocery stores and fast-food joints are soon going to be flooded with off-brand ground beef from God knows where, that mortgage rates are at a 19-year high, that American citizens and immigrants with legal papers are being swept up in mass immigration arrests by masked rent-acops and detained in private prisons, that

Trump’s “New America”: built on memes national parks are becoming corporate industrial sites, and that we’re slaughtering wild horses and endangered wolves — the president of the United States is consumed with changing the name of a lake, building a billion-dollar triumphal arch with his name on it, redesigning a freakin’ golf course, and posting lunatic AI memes of himself.

I used to think that maybe Trump was intentionally using actions like these as distractions while he and his family and friends destroyed our democratic institutions and engineered the wealth transfer from the American people to the billionaire oligarchs who run our economy and control our media. But I think Trump is now just the stooge — a useful, easily manipulated idiot with the attention span and self-control of a six-year-old, a frontman whose sole purpose is to keep progressives outraged and the MAGA faithful entertained — and both groups diverted from the wizards behind the curtain. How much longer can it work? We’ll find out in November.

hen I moved to Memphis four decades ago, one of its main attractions was the high per capita ratio of thrift stores. And, unlike so many funky charms from back then, thrifting, vintage, and reselling businesses remain a powerful presence in the Bluff City to this day. Beyond the shops themselves, there’s also a compelling sense of community among fellow thrifters as we excitedly compare our latest finds, be they timeworn jewelry pieces, electric guitars, or oddball T-shirts. Sometimes, we just remember what was. Ah, to have that shirt I sported in the ’90s, featuring Uncle Sam waving a revolver with the words “Burn My Flag. Go ahead, make my day!” scrawled in red, white, and blue.

Nowadays, of course, clothes that were right off the rack back then are collectible, and that’s part of the beauty of vintage wear: Everything (once) new is old again. Indeed, taking in the nostalgia and retro chic aura surrounding those back-of-closet items can be a way of marking our path through life — and time itself. I’m not alone in feeling this way: All of us at the Flyer are fans of the secondhand, the forgotten, the once-reviled, now trendy threads and trinkets of bygone days.

We’ve each found our own ways into 8 that universe — here are a few of them.

Flashback, The Vintage Department Store I have a flashback every time I visit Flashback, the beautifully curated vintage shop founded by Millett Vance at 2304 Central Avenue, as it was one of my first shopping destinations after moving to Memphis. I wanted a skinny tie, and Flashback was about the only place I could find such a thing back then. When I stop by there now, I mention it to Vance. “I remember buying a tie here in the ’80s!”

“Oh yeah?” she chimes in. “I bet you were looking for a skinny one.”

Vance knows her customers well, and that may be the key to her shop’s longevity.

“I’ve just always bought what was available to me,” she says. “As the years go by, stuff from the ’80s becomes available, and then a few more years go by and it’s the ’90s.

And it’s not just that it becomes available.

You kind of figure out what people want from that period. They don’t want everything. So, I mean, there’s ugly ’80s and there’s ugly ’50s, and you’ve just got to figure out what people really want.”

She also knows her products well, which, given the wide range of furnishings, decorative doo-dads, and clothing available, speaks volumes about her eclectic eye. “I buy all the merchandise,” she notes, and it’s clear that she enjoys the process, often carried out with her longtime partner, Gene Rossetti.

“What we do is, we have a big

van, and we take two- or three-day trips, going on different routes that we’ve been shopping for a number of years, and we have all our camping stuff packed,” Vance explains. “So we stay at state parks and go anywhere that they sell anything used. Towns as big as Memphis get picked over a lot, but medium-sized towns, like Hot Springs or Jonesboro, Arkansas, or Paris, Tennessee, those kinds of places are where you wouldn’t expect to find anything like this, but when I do find it, I’m able to afford it.”

But her searches go beyond affordability. Those out-of-the-way towns are more likely to have pristine goods. “Everything’s in perfect shape,” says Vance. “We clean everything. My partner Gene, he repairs everything.

He was an engineer in a previous life.

So we’re the only junk store with an engineer on staff ! All the cigarette lighters work, all the lights and lamps work, the furniture’s in good shape, and all the little things like jewelry or music boxes, we get those working.”

That fact alone makes Flashback a kind of Neverland. The travails of time seem defanged as you browse through ashtrays (do they even make those anymore?), records, denim jeans, or state-themed glassware that might as well be factory-fresh. Ah ha! And here’s that Nebraska tumbler I always needed!

Outphits Showroom A trip to the Outphits Showroom is a treat, especially for those who are obsessed over any 2000s-era rom-com heroine’s closet. Owner Sophia Coovert and I are mutuals on social media, meaning I get glimpses of her newest finds prior to stepping into the fashion maven’s world.

Once in the showrooms, the pieces on display are like artifacts of myths and legends — things you’d never expect to see up close and personal as a woman in the South. As I walk with Coovert and her dog Lucky to her signature lip-shaped couch, I can’t contain my excitement. I let her know the piece I’ve been itching to see: the cardboard cutout of Britney Spears in a “Got Milk?” ad from the early aughts.

Coovert lets me know that she’s safe upstairs and waiting to be reassembled after traveling with her to a recent vintage market. I’m even more astounded when I see the exact top Spears wore in the ad for sale on a hanger.

A lot has changed since I last spoke with the 23-year-old business owner.

In 2025, she was preparing her former suite for Outphits’ Black Friday Sale.

That event not only gave customers the opportunity to peruse the racks without the appointment-necessary caveat, but also served as her moving sale.

Now, we chat in what was then only a dream — a loft-style space for her

vintage and Y2K-focused showroom.

Mannequins wearing John Paul Gaultier accessories are juxtaposed with racks overflowing with pieces from Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Morgan, Ed Hardy, and others. The new space has allowed her to have more events such as bin sales, expand her team, grow her website, and even offer rentals. Coovert says this growth has been “amazing,” and has given her the opportunity to see what Outphits truly means for her customers. “I’ve had people tell me they hold Outphits to a specific standard,” Coovert says. “I’m very specific about what I source for the showroom.

Everything in here is in pretty amazing quality and condition.”

She’s transparent when it comes to pricing, saying the price tags are adjusted to reflect any stains or imperfections. She’s also proud to be able to bring special brands that can be hard to find in Memphis. “That’s what creates that trust because when [customers] come in, they learn so much and they see so many things they haven’t seen before,” Coovert says. “I’m dropping these unique, amazing brands weekly. That kind of establishes the relationship to where they’re kind of looking forward to [what I’m going to have next].”

Coovert loves to educate her customers on fashion history and the context in which garments were made.

She’s also happy that her items give customers affordable alternatives to fast-fashion pieces. “A lot more girls are waking up to the fact that the clothing they are pushing out to us is horrible,” Coovert says. “It’s gonna get progressively worse, which is scary, but that’s why this stuff is gonna become more valuable.”

Bad Timing Bad Timing just moved to its third location in less than a decade. The reason is the rapid growth of the business, says Christian Colbert.

“Bad Timing initially started over by Crosstown Concourse, which a lot of people are unfamiliar with. Back in the day, they were just doing vintage T-shirts and CDs, stuff like that. I was a younger kid — I’m 23 now, so I was maybe 16, 17 then — and I heard about the store, went in, started shopping vintage. I was just being young, trying to make my own style and that kind of thing.”

Owner Nick Riley and former co-owner Nate Packard took Colbert under their wing. “I was selling sneakers on my own at the time, and that’s when I kind of introduced the concept to them, like, ‘Yo, you might be able to sell a sneaker, too.’ After building that relationship over a few months, they trusted me enough to have me on board. We started moving sneakers as well as vintage clothing, and things just accelerated, man. Within six months, we were on Highland Street, and we just kept climbing.”

Bad Timing is still getting settled in the new location at 626 Minor Road in the University of Memphis area.

Walking in the front door, the first thing you notice is the striking mural of Young Dolph, which takes up half the south wall of the store. The rest of the wall space is taken up with sneakers of all vintages. “Sneakers are big business,” says Colbert. “It’s transitioned from Jordans into collaboration sneakers and designer sneakers. Obviously, since Virgil Abloh’s passing, his collaboration with Off-White Nike, that’s always gonna be top of the pole, but also newer releases. Back in the day, when we were on Highland, a new Jordan 3 would come out, and we would get as many pairs as we could, and they would all sell the same day. Nowadays, for example, the True Blue 3s that came out a month ago, we’ll get them in, but they don’t

move nearly as quickly as they used to.

People are definitely looking for the premiere level of sneakers” Colbert says that the racks of vintage T-shirts still sell well; anything from the 1990s in Memphis Tigers blue goes out the door particularly fast. When the store first opened, Riley kept the racks stocked by digging through bins and scouring thrift stores and antiques markets. But now the volume of merch flowing through the store is too great for just one person to keep up.

Watches are the latest addition to Bad Timing’s inventory. “I love watches. I always have,” Colbert says. “I would have people come in and routinely, they’d be like, ‘Man, that’s a nice watch.’ Okay, if four or five people a week are coming into the store and noticing what I have on my wrist, they’re probably willing to shop watches as well. And so, we started at a very minimal price point with G-SHOCKs, trying to see if anybody would shop in that $60 to $100 range for watches. I believe in the first run we had about 40 of them, and they sold out in two days.” — Chris McCoy Time to Waste Vintage Sami and James Reed — the married duo behind Time to Waste Vintage — started shopping at thrift stores as kids “because we were poor, and that’s what you do,” Sami says. But over the past couple of years, they’ve turned their love of thrifting into a business. James focuses on the hunt, while Sami runs logistics and social media and sews vintage materials into new clothing.

It started as a side hustle but has quickly grown. “It’s now [James’] fulltime job,” Sami says. “He spends every day out in the field, as we call it, sourcing and visiting all of the different thrift stores. His specialty is vintage T-shirts, the more rare and obscure the better. I like true vintage, 1940s through 1970s.”

They also source items from private buyouts, sometimes beginning with James complimenting a stranger’s outfit.

“He will walk up to anybody and say, ‘Hey, I like your shirt, got more of those at home?’” she says. “And that’s literally how he ends up in so many people’s closets.”

They also dig for treasure in the Goodwill bins, called The Bargain Barn or simply The Barn, on Stage Road in Bartlett. There, one can find items that didn’t sell on Goodwill racks or those that were never sorted for store distribution at all. The bin merchandise sells by the pound. While you might have to dodge dirty diapers and other trash while scrounging, Sami says, “That’s where you can get the best value and where your biggest flips can come from. Sometimes you find new [items] with tags, like lululemon or On Cloud shoes.”

And then there are grail scores. “We have a Def Jam jacket that you only could get if you worked there during a specific era,” Sami says. “I guess it was an employee gift.”

Another great find: an original Nightmare on Elm Street VHS box set.

“He picked one up at the bins the other day, listed it, and sold it within an hour for $200.”

Time to Waste’s social media (102k followers on Facebook and more than 54k on Instagram) has taken off as much, if not more, for Sami’s sewing adventures.

Earlier this year, she got some vintage fabric at an estate sale and “made a dress kind of by accident. I wasn’t using a pattern,” she says. “I don’t like patterns, I go on vibes.” She filmed herself trying the dress on for the first time, and both the dress and the video were a hit on socials, bringing many new followers and people asking for how-tos. “Turns out a lot of people who are neurospicy don’t like written instructions, they want to see somebody show them with a cute piece of paper,” she says.

While it has become a nice source of income, it isn’t just about money for the Reeds. “Making your own dreams come true instead of somebody else’s feels nice. continued on page 10

The Thrift Store Couple I met Cooper Driver, 17, and Ava Williams, 19, at Antique Warehouse, which houses Vintage Wearables by Martha, at 2563 Summer Avenue. Just about everything they were wearing was vintage or secondhand. They use “thrift” as a verb as well as a noun.

Driver had on a 1980s US Naval Academy T-shirt, Sherwin-Williams work pants that he dyed green, a pair of vintage brown loafers, and his aunt’s pendant on a chain around his neck. Williams wore secondhand Birkenstocks, bootcut blue jeans, a black flowing top over a cardigan sweater, and a brown leather bag.

The couple, who have been dating for a year and a half, search for clothing and accessories at vintage and thrift stores together. Though I’ve also done my fair share of vintage clothes buying, like old cowboy boots and Harris Tweed jackets, they began ticking off names of places I didn’t know existed.

So I suggested following them around to see what they came up with at their favorite spots.

We visited Blue Suede Vintage at 486 North Hollywood Street. Williams immediately went to a vintage purse rack and picked up an early 2000s Coach brand handbag. Driver tried on what he believed was a 1970s work jacket. “The length is too short,” he said. “I have long arms.” He usually wears metal bangles if sleeves are too short.

But I have plenty of bags.” She took everything out of her purse, which she bought for “three or four dollars” at Salvation Army, and put it in the Coach bag to see how it looked with stuff in it. “It looks awkward if it’s not full,” she said.

When Driver asked how long the purse has been at the vintage shop, the sales clerk said she “just put them up like two weeks ago.” This is a warning sign for vintage shoppers to hurry up and buy what they like before somebody else does.

Williams bought the purse. “It’s really cute,” she said. “And I have the money.”

Driver liked the jacket with the short sleeves, but didn’t buy it. “I’ve got to marinate on the idea. Maybe next time.”

But, he said, “I might get these earrings right here. They’re sterling silver.”

Other stops included Retro Grade at 517 South Highland Street. There are lots of tennis shoes there. Williams tried on a worn Marithé + François Girbaud blue jean jacket, but he didn’t buy it. He did buy a 1950s French work coat at Second Kiss Vintage inside Minglewood Hall at 1559 Madison Avenue. It had some small holes in it, which Driver, who knows how to sew, said he’d mend.

Williams bought a pair of peace sign earrings. “I just got a little peace sign on my arm as my first tattoo,” she said.

They checked out at a counter where a bumper sticker read, “On My Way to the Thrift Store.”

Kelly Mullis, Second Kiss Vintage’s owner, likes to see people discover great finds. “This stuff needs to go to a new home and have a whole other life and be loved again,” she says.

“And I get excited when the kids — I say the kids, but especially younger people — come in and are excited about taking something home,” she says. “I’m usually like, ‘You can have it. Just go.’ It’s awesome.” — Michael Donahue

By Kimberly Ham What does a city look like the instant you step into it? Before your eyes settle on a face, a building, or a street corner, there’s movement, color, light, and a blur of activity competing for attention.

That fleeting sensation is at the heart of Debbie Likley Pacheco’s “Living in Layers,” on view at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens through September 27th. The Memphis artist’s mixed-media works combine photography, digital manipulation, painting, and wax to create images that hover between recognizable city scenes and abstraction.

Pacheco’s artistic roots stretch back to childhood, when her father taught her to draw and paint at the kitchen table. She later studied art and graphic design at the University of Memphis and worked as an advertising art director before leaving the field about 20 years ago to devote herself to painting full time. Those experiences continue to inform her work: Photography taught her to “see through the camera’s eye,” while graphic design gave her a practical understanding of concepts, deadlines, and the business of making art.

For “Living in Layers,” Pacheco turns her camera toward New York City, photographing pedestrians, architectural details, reflections, graffiti, light, and the constantly shifting relationship between people and their surroundings. She has accumulated thousands of New York photographs over years of visits, using them as raw material for an intentionally unpredictable process.

Pacheco begins by bringing photographs into digital programs such as Photoshop and Procreate, where she combines multiple images with colors and textures. The resulting compositions can contain roughly seven layers before they are printed on fine-art paper. She then paints directly onto the photographs, mounts them on wood panels, and finishes them with thin layers of wax, which add both protection and visual depth.

But the layering is more than a technique. For Pacheco, it reflects the complexity of human experience. Her images aren’t intended to tell one fixed story or present one perspective. Instead, people, buildings, light, and movement overlap, inviting viewers to look closer and discover many stories within the same scene.

Ultimately, Pacheco hopes viewers experience some of the excitement she felt encountering New York — and leave looking more intentionally at the layers of the world around them.

he word “fake” can mean a lot of things. It’s omnipresent today, typically opposed to “human,” “authentic,” or “artificial,” with AI-generated sounds pervading our environment ad nauseam. But long before AI, bands like The Monkees or The Archies were deemed ersatz in contrast to “real groups.” Then again, considering how deeply bubblegum music is revered by rock vinyl heads today, maybe “Monkees fake” is more in the affirmative, like a boxer’s feint to the left before walloping you with a radiophonic right jab of irresistible hooks, groovy riffs, and chiming harmonies.

Mulling all this over on my way to see the band FAKE rehearse, I feel I’ve cracked the code. Knowing band founder Tim Prudhomme to be a devout fan of bubblegum music (I once played in his band devoted entirely to the stuff ), I interpret FAKE as his clever take on rock’s fetish for authenticity and his own love of The Archies et al. The fact that his most well-known ’90s band had also adopted a four-letter word sporting the letters F and K made FAKE all the more alluring.

And so I walk into their grotto, the music stops, and I put the question straight to Prudhomme: What’s he on about, calling his band FAKE? “Hmm. It does offer itself up to all interpretations,” Prudhomme muses laconically, cradling his guitar. “Like, ‘Yeah, we’re a prefab band,’ even though we’re not, really. Oh, are we?” Looking around the room at Dustin Crops on drums, Andrew Geraci on bass, and Keith Cooper on guitar reassures him that the quartet is real. When I suggest that nowadays some might mistake FAKE for one of those acts proudly incorporating AI into their productions, Dustin Crop is quick to jump in.

“Our music is not on the internet. We have no plans to put it there, as of today, but that could change tomorrow,” he says.

Which in turn prompts Cooper to chime in, “And even if we did, we’ll still make it with human minds and hearts. I can guarantee that as far as FAKE’s ethos goes.”

That’s confirmed by the warm, choogling sound of FAKE, emanating from my turntable since I obtained a preview copy of the band’s very real debut LP, Undershirt. Recorded by Andrew McCalla, it’s proof positive that FAKE is indeed as real and earthy as a band gets.

The songs feel lived-in, the ensemble chugging in sync with Prudhomme’s droll vocals, which sometimes dip into basso profundo depths. As their 2025 Gonerfest performance was revelatory and rocking, it’s heartening to hear that energy captured

on wax.

For Prudhomme, it’s a departure, especially the album’s more soaring guitar passages that somehow evoke both Television and Duane Allman, gracing Prudhomme’s terse, pithy words and melodies with the most lyrical playing he’s been associated with through his career. That’s in no small part due to Cooper, who’s honed his skills with bands like The Sheiks, the Tennessee Screamers, and Optic Sink.

“This is the most accomplished group I’ve ever played with,” says Prudhomme. “No offense to everyone else I’ve ever played with. But it’s been a great thing for me. In the past, I’ve never been able to afford these kind of guys, but they don’t charge me anything!”

And that, I discover, is the real reason behind the name FAKE. PHOTO: JAMIE HARMON

“When we first started,” Prudhomme explains, “I knew that these guys all played with other bands, and I suggested that this group would be very extremely non-committal. It wouldn’t even be a real band, just a fake band with no pressure whatsoever.”

It’s true that you can hear all these players with other bands, but never with quite the same results. FAKE, it turns out, gives them license to let loose, taking Prudhomme’s carefully composed songs in unpredictable directions. “It’s all just, ‘Okay. Here’s what I’m doing, y’all!’ And they just all make up their own parts,” says Prudhomme. “Makes for a better product, a better song. Makes it more four-dimensional.” That’s quite a trick for a four-letter word.

FAKE will spin and speak about Undershirt at the Memphis Listening Lab on Thursday, September 10th, and perform a free record release show at Murphy’s on Wednesday, September 23rd.

L

ike bees humming inside a honeycomb, human beings flit about the new location of Hive as they bring pastries, sandwiches, and bagels to their tables or cars. “The crowd is busy,” Josh Steiner says. “It’s fun. It’s entertaining. Electric.

They’re out the door for sure. They’re past Huey’s.”

Steiner, owner of both Hives, opened his second location this August 29th at 585 Erin Drive in East Memphis. It’s been almost exactly three years since he opened the first location downtown at 276 South Front, Suite 105. Like Hive Downtown, the new Hive is wildly successful.

What’s the attraction? “The size of it, and just the fact that I was able to complete the vision that we did with Downtown. Just being able to make fresh bread and bagels. And a great product for our city.”

People are “just so excited that they have a place to get fresh bagels and bread,” Steiner says, adding, “They’re happy to see another local restaurant in their city.”

“I’m trying to build a generational restaurant for my family. One location wasn’t going to be enough. I’m trying to build it for the next 50 years.”

The newest Hive, which is in the old Holiday Deli & Ham Co. location, is 5,000 square feet vs. the original location’s 1,100 square feet. In addition to a more spacious dining area, the East Memphis Hive has a special room making pastries, one for making sandwiches and prepping food, and another for making bagels and sourdough bread.

The wood and the natural look of the new place is “just welcoming,” Steiner says, adding, “My wife and her mom picked out everything for the restaurant.”

Unlike the downtown Hive, which closes at 4 p.m., the new one stays open until 7 p.m. They serve breakfast and lunch. “Later, we might add some pizzas and things like that,” Steiner muses. But, for now, he says, “We’re doing what we do well. Which is breakfast and lunch.”

Among the breakfast items are the “Elvis Bagel,” with sliced banana, peanut butter, honey, and bacon; and avocado 16 toast made with sourdough bread and, according to the menu, “smashed avo-

cado, eggs, marinated heirloom tomatoes, aged balsamic reduction, sprouts, pepitas, and lemon zest.”

Craig Wiener, whose niece, Sarah Rapp, works at the new Hive, was making yet another visit to enjoy their “Croissantwich,” which is sausage, scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, and dijonnaise. “I’ve eaten a lot of breakfast sandwiches in my life,” Wiener says. “I have never ever, ever, ever had a breakfast sandwich as good as the sausage, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich here at Hive. It blew my mind.

The sausage is like a hamburger. So, two thumbs up and sunglasses up.”

The sandwich menu includes more mouth-watering items, including the “Smashed Bella” — sourdough focaccia with balsamic roasted portabella, caramelized onion, chili oil, and seasoned arugula.

“Turkey 585” is sourdough rye focaccia, roasted turkey, hot honey, whole grain aioli, jalapeño cream cheese, heirloom tomato, red onion, and bacon.

The special “Little Ones” section of Hive’s menu includes the “Little Leo” — a Belgian sweet potato waffle with syrup and honey butter.

As always, Steiner uses honey from his own beehives “in all of our products.” In a 2022 Memphis Flyer story, Steiner, who became a beekeeper in 2016, described himself as a “bee nerd.”

He said at the time he was planning to use the honey in bagels. “We’re putting the honey in our water to boil our bagels,” he said. “That means anybody eating our bagels and our honey are not just getting local honey, but uber-local honey, in a sense, because it’s our backyard bees.”

In the same story, Steiner said he and his wife, Wallis, got the idea to open a deli/bakehouse during the pandemic.

“My wife and I started selling pastries out of our kitchen and we got into it. We were doing a cooking series on Facebook.”

He took classes at the San Francisco Baking Institute, which specializes in ba-

gels. “I wanted to learn the business side and sourcing local ingredients.”

Prior to opening Hive, Steiner was owner-operator of two restaurants: Strano! Sicilian Kitchen & Bar and Strano

by Chef Josh. Lately, he’s spending more time at the East Memphis Hive location, but he will be traveling back and forth to both locations.

Why did he want a second location of Hive? “I’m trying to build a generational restaurant for my family. One location wasn’t going to be enough. I’m not trying to have Hive just for the next five years.

I’m trying to build it for the next 50 years,” Steiner says.

Will Hive continue to expand? “We’re looking at other locations.”

NEWS OF THE WEIRD By the editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Crime Report Everette Krichbaum, 52, and James Gay, 35, are charged with aggravated battery after wielding a hatchet and a machete, respectively, during an altercation in a Publix parking lot in Panama City, Florida, The Smoking Gun reported on August 7th. According to the police report, Gay admitted to parking next to Krichbaum and approaching his vehicle for a confrontation over “prior issues.” During the dispute, Krichbaum brandished a hatchet “in an attempt to deter” Gay. In response, Gay went back to his vehicle, pulled out a machete, and struck Krichbaum in the face with it. By the time police arrived, they say each man had injuries on his hands, and Krichbaum sustained further injuries after Gay struck him unconscious. The pair were treated at a local hospital before being taken into custody.

[The Smoking Gun, 8/7/26] Statue Liberated Greg Gatwood of San Francisco was doing yard work when he came across what he thought was a small stone slab. But as he dug, he discovered the object was actually a 2-footwide, 150-pound statue, NBC Bay Area reported on August 10th. His partner, artist Judy Gittelsohn, consulted with local experts and is working to determine if the statue is the work of renowned San Francisco sculptor Ralph Stackpole, who died in 1973, or perhaps one of his students. The couple’s house is located near what used to be the sculpture department of the California School of Fine Arts — now known as the San Francisco Art Institute — where Stackpole taught. [NBC Bay Area, 8/10/26] That’ll Stop Traffic Rush hour traffic was shut down for two hours in Washington, D.C., on the morning of August 12th after a suspicious device with exposed wires — which turned out to be an adult toy — was reported outside a fire station, WUSA9 reported. A witness said they saw someone place a suspicious package in a trash can near the station in a northwest D.C. neighborhood, and police say that the person who threw the item away approached someone at the firehouse before tossing the contraband. When police arrived, they closed local streets for

nearly two hours while they investigated.

Eventually the item was determined to be an “electronic sex portable pump device,” according to the police report. Police cleared the scene and traffic resumed around 9 a.m. [WUSA9, 08/12/26] Vanishing Goats A pair of pygmy goats boarded a bus in Portland, Oregon, during the busy Tuesday morning commute, Oregon Live reported on August 12th. Security footage shows them leaving the bus after being shooed out by passengers, then wandering into a nearby shopping center, but police were unable to locate them when they arrived on the scene. “So where did they come from? Where were they going? Did they have valid fare?” The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon said in a social media post.

Burrowing owl in Florida Mystery Cats Two-dimensional cat cutouts have popped up in vacant lots in Cape Coral, Florida, Gulf Coast News reported on August 11th. One of the lots has a burrowing owl nest, leading nearby volunteers at the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife to suspect the cutouts were erected in an attempt to deter the owls from making more nests there. Cats are a main predator of burrowing owls, who are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Furthermore, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission classifies the owls as “threatened,” and it is illegal to disturb their nests without a special permit. Serious Kid Stuff The Like You Children’s Film Festival returns to the Pink Palace Museum.

“Kids are smart and creative and read between the lines,” says Noah Glenn, founder of the Like You Children’s Film Festival. “They probably know more than you think they know and understand more than you think they understand. This whole festival started on the idea that I, as an adult, can go to any film festival and have this really rewarding, enriching experience of engaging with independent cinema.

I think for a lot of people, there’s this feeling that kids can just watch some cartoons and they’re cool with it. But I think kids are just as capable of appreciating the nuances of art and engaging with big ideas. They’re usually much more open-minded than adults are because they haven’t been stubbornly set in their ways yet.”

Last year, Glenn put his ideas into action with the first Like You Film Festival, which was held at the Pink Palace Museum’s Giant Screen theater. “We didn’t know what to expect last year,” says Glenn. “Now I think, a year later, we know how well things went, but we

still don’t know what to expect!”

The Like You Film Club has been doing monthly screenings since last year’s festival, which have been steadily growing in audience numbers. Glenn says last year only about 30 people came to the festival’s first preview party; this year, that number ballooned to 200. “It was really rewarding to get to have those filmmakers in town, and to see something that started as a little idea, actually, being up on the big screen,” says Glenn.

The second Like You Film Festival will roll September 11th through 13th.

New this year is an opening night party on Friday which starts “… kind of right after school,” says Glenn. “You can roll in, get some food, hang out, and then we’re showing Space Cadet, which is an animated film by Kid Koala.”

For Glenn, those conversations are the point. “The mission of our nonprofit is supporting the emotional growth and the mental health of kids and families.

So we try to be very aware that there’s a range of experiences with what people might be going through and what people are ready for and what people are hungry for, excited for.”

In the wake of the death of famed singer, songwriter, actor, philanthropist, businesswoman, and veritable earthbound angel Dolly Parton at 80 years old, I must have read several dozen think pieces about the Tennesseanturned-international-icon’s massive (and by seemingly unanimous agreement, overwhelmingly positive) impact.

One essay in particular caught my attention, not for what it said about She of the Coat of Many Colors, but for what it seemed to propose about the United States of America and its people’s conception of “whiteness.”

The essayist, whose name I neglected to write down, lost as I was amid a sea of heartfelt tributes, was somewhat perplexed that so many people from so many different walks of life were not only willing but eager to celebrate Parton, despite her wealth, her age (read: certified Baby Boomer status), and her supposed embodiment of the aforementioned concept of whiteness.

To those points, I say that no one in the so-called “younger generations” resents Baby Boomers because of ageism, but because, as a group, they seem unwilling to accept that the world has changed dramatically since the time PHOTO: FEATUREFLASH | DREAMSTIME.COM they went into the workforce. Similarly, it’s not whiteness that Parton wore as her public persona, but a wholeDolly Parton hearted embracing of her Appalachian roots, albeit with a very Nashville-flavored, rhinestone-encrusted twist.

Parton is an example of an unapologetic and, more importantly, healthy appreciation of her heritage. She was true to her Tennessee mountain roots, but in a way that never stopped her from proudly declaring that, “Black lives matter.” Don’t believe me? Look up the video.

That example could be of some use to white Southerners looking to divest themselves of the language and culture of white supremacy. Celebration of one’s whiteness, and whiteness alone, leads directly to white supremacy. There is a way forward, though.

I’m sure that, in the long line of Davises and Etheridges and Plunks that came before me, there have been some awful people. I don’t have to celebrate them, though, and I won’t. Instead, I celebrate my great-great-great-grandmother Anna Henrietta Plunk, née Gage, who became so frustrated with the lazy young men of McNairy County, who apparently preferred to idle instead of start work on a proposed church building, that she “picked up an axe and led the way,” according to the obituary of her husband, Calvin Plunk.

A propensity for hard work and a can-do attitude? That jibes with what I see as the admirable aspects of Southern and American cultures. I can own that, though it’s not even the best part.

Anna Plunk was a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. On her frequent trips from McNairy County to Nashville, where she dropped off food and needed supplies to her three sons stationed there, she noted Confederate troop movements. She then passed that information on to the Union Army. According to family lore, she was once robbed by Confederate traitors, who even took her donkey. Apparently, her oft-repeated joke about the near-death experience was that the dern Rebels were so greedy, “They left me afoot.” They took her means of conveyance, you see. I suppose it sounded like they only left her a single foot.

I’m not sure. Maybe you had to be there.

Her work as a spy earned my great-great-great-grandmother not only a place in my heart, but a visit and a commendation from Gen. Lew Wallace. My point is, I choose to celebrate the courage, loyalty, and humor of my ancestor. That, to me, is what it means to be a Tennessean, an American, and a Davis. All the rest is of no interest to me, and I don’t mind leaving it where it belongs. In the past.

I think also of the time before my older cousin’s wedding, when Grannie pulled me aside to tell me that one of my cousin’s groomsmen was gay and I better not treat him differently than anyone else. It was God’s job to judge, not mine, she said, and anyway, she had never met a gay person who was anything but nice to her. Most importantly, since the wedding party originally met in her small home in the hills of Tennessee, he was a guest — and guests are to be welcomed.

Of course, I didn’t and I don’t think that there’s anything to judge, but that was pretty damn progressive for a little old lady in West Tennessee some 20 years ago.

We may not get to choose our history, but we can choose what to honor and celebrate. Celebrating an arbitrary lack of pigment is not only asinine in the extreme, it’s dangerous. Memphians are in danger simply because of the color of their skin. It was not 121 white folks who were rounded up by ICE, zip-tied, and put in vans to who-knows-where after the Sunday-night raid on the El Corralón nightclub, but it is our responsibility to speak out against those unconstitutional and immoral actions. They need to be brought home.

If you disagree, I would issue a warning. No red hat or white hood will protect anyone if the powers that be decide they deserve a ride in an unmarked white van. It’s long past time for all people of good conscience to step forward and speak out. Take off the white hoods. Take off the red hats.
