As I write this, it’s (checks calendar) Tuesday, or as we call it now — day. It’s, what, the seventh week of working from home? Seems like we just started yesterday … and it seems like it’s always been like this: the relaxed roll out of bed, tousling doggy noggins as they greet us, boiling water, grinding coffee beans, filling the French press, feeding the dogs, getting the paper, sitting down at my kitchen table “office” in my sweats and T-shirt.

I read the CA (15 minutes on a big day), open my laptop, check news sites, Twitter, Facebook, email. Then I open the “flyer-edit” Slack channel and type “Good morning!” to my fellow Flyer homies.

Except for opening the Slack channel, this is my everyday routine. Every. Day. Highlights of the week include walking the dogs at lunchtime, rolling the trash and recycling bins to the curb on Thursday night, and bringing groceries, dog food, and Amazon packages into the house from the front porch. I also treat myself to one glorious early morning Wednesday trip (masked) to the grocery store, followed by a curbside pickup at the liquor store.

Time flows relentlessly and seamlessly. My wife and I are living quiet, mostly solitary lives, though lately, we’ve allowed ourselves the incredible luxury of a visitor or two. We sit on the deck, well apart, and talk and gossip and catch up. Friends. Family. What a concept. Such a joy. You don’t miss your water, etc., etc.

We may moan and bitch a little, but it’s done with the awareness that we are incredibly fortunate to just be dealing with boredom or isolation, unlike millions of Americans who are coping with unemployment and sickness and even fighting for their lives — or, in the case of medical staffers and other essential employees, maybe working harder than ever.

But for many of us the COVID weeks seem to be speeding by in a haze of routine. I wheel the recycling down the drive to the street and think, “Didn’t I just do this yesterday? Has it really been a week?”

So why does time seem to be moving faster for some of us? Is it the lack of events to look forward to, the inability to make real plans to go anywhere — to visit out-of-state friends or family or go on vacation trips? Is it the absence of signature human rituals, such as funerals, weddings, graduations, birthday celebrations?

According to a recent L.A. Times article, the answer is yes to all the above: “For the most part, we are not taking part in particularly memorable activities, like getting drinks with a friend, going to a sporting event, or traveling,” says Marc Wittmann, an author and research fellow at the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health in Freiburg, Germany. “Now, there are fewer signals differentiating a Sunday from a Monday.”

No kidding.

The Times article also quotes Adrian Bejan, a professor at Duke University: “The brain remembers the unusual. If our new routines are suddenly different, our brains would be bombarded with images worth remembering. This would then result in the perception that time is moving slowly over the quarantine experience, though it’s likely time will feel as though it’s speeding up again as the quarantine becomes more familiar.”

Indeed.

And for those of us who aren’t sitting at home — who are working in a hospital or at home balancing a full work schedule while trying to home-school their children — it’s possible those folks will look back and feel as though this period of their lives lasted longer than normal.

Thinning the Herd Americans are proving that they’re the stupidest people on Earth.

We Americans are about as dumb as we want to be. With 1.5 million cases of the coronavirus confirmed in the U.S. and COVID-related deaths approaching 80,000, many states began reopening certain businesses and public places, and the populace emerged from their homes with a vengeance.

When Mayor Strickland’s “Safer at Home” executive order expired on May 5th, Memphis shoppers packed grocery stores, while complaints piled up over people neither wearing masks nor social distancing, especially in the bleach and disinfectant aisle.

In Ft. Worth, Texas, five people were shot at a party in a public park that drew over 600 people. In Arkansas, hair salons, barber shops, and tattoo and massage parlors will open this week, while at the federal prison in Forrest City, 301 inmates and 14 staffers have tested positive. In Jacksonville, Florida, crowds jammed beaches despite the mayor’s directive limiting gatherings to 10 people. Officials in Boca Raton tweeted images of crowded boat parties, while Governor Ron DeSantis announced that municipalities should “feel free” to begin opening parks and beaches. Crowds in California continue to jam beaches and parks, defying the governor’s orders to shelter in place. In Flint, Michigan, a security guard at a Family Dollar store was murdered by a disgruntled customer who took offense at the guard’s insistence that a young girl put on a face mask in accordance with a state order.

And we haven’t even mentioned the churches. Life Tabernacle Church in Louisiana held services for over 550 parishioners because the pastor proclaimed the virus “is not a concern.

The virus, we believe, is politically motivated.” Over at the River Church in Tampa, Florida, Pastor Rodney HowardBrowne was arrested after defying repeated orders to not hold services at his mega-church. The good pastor, one of many Christian leaders who laid hands on the president during a prayer session in the Oval Office, told his congregation that the pandemic was of less concern than the flu and announced that “The whole thing is planned … to shut down Christianity.” He also told his flock that God would replenish their toilet paper, and I wish that were a joke.

Closer to home, the Cleburne County Church in Greers Ferry, Arkansas, held a children’s event in late March, after which 34 people tested positive for the coronavirus, including the pastor and his wife.

The newest viral hotspot is in the White House. Trump’s personal valet has tested positive for COVID-19. This is the guy who serves the president his food and yet, the Mad King still refuses to wear a face mask for fear that it would make him look ridiculous. This would rank about 12th on the list of things that make Trump look ridiculous. The press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence, Katie Miller, has also tested positive for coronavirus. Miller is the wife of White House ghoul and architect of the “brown children in cages” policy, Stephen Miller. Miller himself tested negative, which is expected of bloodless vampires. The only thing that could harm him is a wooden stake.

Our president continues on his singular quest to reopen every KFC in the country, despite the best advice of his experts. A recently leaked White House internal document, assembled by FEMA, projects deaths reaching three thousand a day by June 1st — a 70 percent increase from current numbers. The often-quoted University of Washington model projects 135,000 Americans dead from the coronavirus through the first of August — more than double its forecast from mid-April. The squatter in the White House has forbidden any officials on the Coronavirus Task Force from testifying before Congress without the express approval of new Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

As I write this, there are more than 3,000 confirmed cases and 64 deaths from COVID-19 in Shelby County.

The virus is raging through nursing homes and jails while the “essential employees” of these facilities fan out into their respective communities after their shifts. And yet some people still believe the coronavirus, as the president once said, is “a hoax.” Personally, we’re not going anywhere until summer, or when medical experts tell us it’ll be safe to visit patients in the hospital again.

On a positive note, Carnival Cruises will resume excursions in August, and I understand tickets are a real bargain.

The fight over a new voting system raises issues of integrity and possible nepotism.

A

re the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County — troubled with decades of problematic and even botched election results — really about to acquire a new, improved means of expressing their will in the forthcoming August and November election rounds?

That question may be answered this week, as the Shelby County Commission decides whether to accept or overrule the judgment last week of Election Administrator Linda Phillips and the Shelby County Election Commission (SCEC) — apparently in favor of ballotmarking devices marketed by the ES&S Company, a monolith of the election-machine industry. The name of the chosen manufacturer was not explicitly revealed last week — “Company 1,” was how it was called in discussion — but several references

by Phillips to the “thermal paper” uniquely employed by ES&S for production of machine receipts, were something of a giveaway.

The Shelby County Commission, which has the responsibility of paying for the machines (or not), had voted twice previously in favor of handmarked ballots instead, on several grounds, including cost, transparency, and invulnerability to ballot-hacking.

And an aroused contingent of local activists, abetted by a network of nationally known election adepts, is prepared to insist on that choice.

Theoretically, the SCEC voted last Thursday to accept something of a compromise resolution from Election Commision member Brent Taylor, one of the three Republicans on the five-member body. Taylor accepted Phillips’ recommendation on behalf of ballot-marking devices but proposed that voters in each precinct be offered, much in the manner of the grocer’s “paper or plastic” choice, the alternative of a hand-marked ballot.

That was seemingly enough to win over Democrat Anthony Tate. But not Bennie Smith, the other Democrat and an election-security professional who is one of the sparkplugs of the case for hand-marked paper ballots.

The bottom line is that, despite last week’s 4-1 vote by the Shelby County Election Commission in approval of ballot-marking devices — again, presumably those manufactured

by ES&S — the battle isn’t over yet.

Hardcore proponents of hand-marked paper ballots, who have been highly motivated and organized from the beginning, are looking ahead to the prospect that the Shelby County Commission, whose duty it is to pay for and transact any purchase of voting-machine equipment, might override the stated choice of the Election Administrator and SCEC. The county commission has put itself on record twice as wishing to

Though conflict-of-interest and disclosure issues are involved in the dispute, the heart of the matter may well be fundamentally different ideas about the right to vote. Though both sides in the current controversy make claims that the system they advocate will save money and achieve accurate results, the question is deeper and more essential than that.

There may, in fact, be something more than an incidental correlation between the method we choose to cast our ballots and the degree to which the franchise is made available to the maximum number of people.

As one instance of that, the partisans of hand-marked paper ballots tend to favor the maximum use of voting by mail for anticipated absenteeism and other reasons, especially in a time of enduring fears regarding the COVID-19 virus. One such advocate is Steve Mulroy, law professor at the University of Memphis and a former member of the Shelby County Commission and one of the leaders of the local activists seeking handmarked paper ballots.

Mulroy first came to public attention more than a decade ago when he was an early advocate locally of a paper trail for the purpose of double-checking, if need be, the votes cast in an election. The concept is now accepted virtually everywhere, and

the idea of scanners to provide such a paper record of ballots cast is now built into both of the rival systems being considered for Shelby County’s new voting process.

Even as Mulroy is joining with others to urge the county commission to expand its fiduciary intent and resources for the purchase of a handmarked ballot system, he has filed suit in Chancery Court in Nashville against relevant public officials of the state of Tennessee — Governor Bill Lee, Secretary of State Tre Hargett, state Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins, and state Attorney General Herb Slatery — seeking relief for several named individuals and organizations from state regulations impeding or prohibiting their wish to vote absentee by mail in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Court is where the voting machine case could end up, too. The partisans of hand-marked paper ballots are hopeful that the seven Democratic members of the county commission who have voted twice to endorse the purchase of such a system will stick to their guns and vote to overrule the Election Commission’s official recommendation. Such a vote could happen at the county commission’s next regular public meeting, on May 18th. Or it could come earlier via a special called meeting.

In the event such a vote does occur, it is probable that the issue would be contested legally. A first step would be Chancery Court locally, where, as County Commissioner Turner, a proponent of hand-marked ballots, sees it, the odds would favor his side.

“After that, who knows?” said Turner, who foresees a round — maybe several — of appellate testing, as well as a possible action supporting ballotmarking devices by a reconvened state legislature with its Republican supermajority. “However it goes, I’m with it to the end,” vowed Turner, who said he thought the other six Democratic commissioners favoring hand-marked ballots would persevere as well. (It should be noted that the party-line aspect of the current controversy owes much to a public letter from GOP state Senator Brian Kelsey addressed to the three Republican SCEC members insisting on their support for ballotmarking devices.)

Administrator Phillips is very much a true believer for her side. She has made numerous public statements disparaging paper ballots and extolling ballot-marking devices, and, even as her original RFP (request for proposal) went out to potential vendors, she had an op-ed published on behalf of such machines. And she has made frequent public statements alleging that voter error is a rampant feature of paper ballots and, even more sensationally, told a county commission meeting

WIDELY DIFFERING ESTIMATES

Election Administrator Linda Phillips and local activists for handmarked paper ballots have difficulty agreeing on many things — notably the respective costs to Shelby County of the kind of new voting machines each prefers.

Phillips reckons the immediate purchase costs of new ES&S ballot-marking devices, which she favors, to be $7,160,000, as against $8,150,000 for a hand-marked ballot system. She sees the 14-year extrapolated cost of maintaining the hand-marked system to be $24,785,000, compared to $9,415,000 for ballot-marking devices.

The local advocates of hand-marked ballots, on the other hand, see their system as costing only $3,039,314 up front, with annual maintenance expenses of only $612,564, while they see the ballotmarking machines favored by Phillips to have an initial cost of $8,268,314, with annual expenses thereafter to be $885,203.

Not only different systems, but different vocabularies for figuring costs. No wonder this particular twain can’t meet.

recently that voter fraud occurred “100 percent” in the realm of paper ballots.

Mulroy, who has authored numerous serious papers and a book on the kaleidoscope of issues relating to voting, promptly debunked Phillips’ assertions, producing evidence that such paper-ballot fraud is hard to authenticate anywhere and has been non-existent in Tennessee. Further, Mulroy cited studies demonstrating that the rate of voter error was no higher in paper voting or in absentee ballot counts than in touch-screen

voting. Significantly, he used research performed by the conservative Heritage Foundation to buttress his conclusions in both cases.

A Matter of Bona Fides

Adherents of paper ballots have been at pains of late to question the bona fides of Phillips’ professed positions, citing her own relationship — and that of her family members — to companies with whom she has continued on page 10

purchase a system employing handmarked paper ballots as the most costeffective, transparent, and unhackable way to carry out an election. As the specter of COVID-19 began to make itself felt, the paper ballot adherents have also emphasized the lesser likelihood of viral infection via a paper ballot used singly than for metal used over and over by a sequence of individuals.

One of the more dedicated believers in the paper ballot concept is Democratic County Commissioner Van Turner, who some weeks ago at a commission meeting was involved in a verbal exchange with Election Administrator Phillips, who was adamantly insisting on her preference for ballot-marking devices.

“We can vote down the funding,” Turner pointed out.

“We can sue you,” Phillips retorted.

arranged contractual relationships.

Inasmuch as her preferred vendor for the new ballot-marking devices she wants for Shelby County is apparently ES&S, it may or may not be relevant that, as her PR assistant Suzanne Thompson acknowledged in a recent communication, one of Phillips’ two sons, presumably Andrew, “worked for ES&S,” adding, “He’s no longer employed there.”

Documentary evidence does establish that Andrew Phillips, along with another Phillips son, Rick, did work at the voting-software company Everyone Counts in 2017, when Shelby County, during Phillips’ first year as election administrator , concluded a $1 million-plus contract with that company, for the purchase and maintenance of voter-registration software. Controversy surrounds the history of that contract, first of all, since not only the two Phillips sons but Phillips herself had been an employee of Everyone Counts.

Everyone Counts was, in fact, her immediate past employer at the time she took the job of Shelby County election administrator.

At the time, Everyone Counts seems not to have been regarded as a leader in its field. During the first year of the Shelby County contract, in fact, Everyone Counts suffered financial difficulties and was purchased by a company called Votem, which took over administration of the voterregistration contract. In short order, Votem would divest itself of the Shelby County contract, passing it on to a third company, KnowInk. Coincidentally or not, Rick Phillips, one of Linda Phillips’ sons, would end up in the service of each of those companies in turn — first Everyone Counts, then Votem, and finally KnowInk, where he remains today. Meanwhile, Shelby County has continued to pay an annual maintenance fee to whoever held the contract, and has purchased KnowInk

e-poll books for $175,000 on a solesource contract.

The issue of family connections is not the only one that has arisen regarding that voter-registration contract, which was Linda Phillips’ first major action in the service of Shelby County. There is some indication that she may have waived the duty of keeping her commission members sufficiently informed about the vendor or the other relevant facts regarding the contract.

Prior to concluding that 2017 contract, Phillips, who had been hired by Shelby County in 2016, went through the motions of asking Marcy Ingram, then the ethics officer in the Shelby County Attorney’s office, a series of questions, including those of whether her own past relationship with Everyone Counts needed to be disclosed and whether her son’s employment at the company should be disclosed as well.

Attorney Ingram’s answers were succinct: “As you are involved in the evaluation of the proposals,” she said, Phillips needed to make disclosure in both cases “to the other evaluators” to avoid “an appearance of impropriety.”

In her query of Ingram, Phillips had offered this assurance: “I’m not going to be making the final decision on what to purchase; that will be the Election Commission decision to recommend the vendor.” [Our italics] There is no record in the minutes of Shelby County Election Commission meetings or elsewhere to suggest that the commission was in fact invited to pass judgment on the vendor. Norma Lester, an election commissioner at the time, is adamant about that and affirms, too, that there were no disclosures to the election commission of the sort mandated by Ingram.

Phillips’ own PR consultant, Suzanne Thompson, explains the letting of the contract thusly: “For the purchase of the VR equipment, a scoring machine [sic] made up from county IT reps and the election commission each ranked the

equipment. Each member rated the system independently. She [Phillips] didn’t make a recommendation for the Voter’s Registration System because it was all up to the folks in purchasing.”

In short, while various IT technocrats may have had a shot at “evaluating” the contract, the Shelby County Election Commission itself seemingly did not. This may or may not be a problem of substance. It is certainly one of optics.

Also in the optics category is another odd circumstance: John Ryder, the veteran Shelby County Election Commission attorney who doubles as a vintage Republican Party eminence, was revealed recently to be sharing office space with the Nashville firm of MNA Government Operations. The head of that firm is Wendell Moore, a longtime Ryder friend, who lobbies for the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce and for ES&S, that major player in the election-machinery field, and the ultimate choice of Linda Phillips and a 4-1 majority of the Election Commission as the contractor of Shelby County’s new voting system.

Once the matter of his officesharing became public, Ryder argued that his presence in the Nashville office of MNA was due to the fact that his law firm, Harris-Shelton, rented space there and that he had no working relationship with either MNA or its

client ES&S. He said further that he had no knowledge of the thenactive RFP for Shelby County voting machines nor any of the vendors seeking the county’s business, and therefore he had seen no need to make any disclosures.

Left hanging over the affair in the aftermath, and never quite explained, was photographic evidence that, in two different versions of the glass register in the lobby of the Bank of America building in Nashville, Ryder was listed as an associate of MNA.

In any case, at some point in the near future, Shelby County stands to be outfitted with new voting devices, hopefully in time for the August election round.

“Slimy Tricks?”

One thing is incontestable: As already indicated, ES&S, which absorbed its main rival, Diebold, some years ago, is a major player in the electionmachinery business, a veritable titan.

Critics of the company see it as an industry giant squelching would-be

competitors and running rampant over contractual and constitutional processes in the jurisdictions where it operates.

Voting rights activist Susan Pynchon, a Floridian who, with local activist Erika Sugarmon, has organized several recent Zoom sessions on the voting-machine issue, has compiled a lengthy list of articles pertaining to the company’s activities nationwide. They run from charges of bribery to criminal negligence to playing fast and loose with contractual obligations to errorprone hardware and undependable software.

As a sort of distillation of all that, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), in a recent Zoom seminar on election security, said that ES&S “uses every slimy trick in the book” to get states to buy “overpriced, insecure voting machines.”

That, of course, is one side of the issue. ES&S has its partisans, too, who see the company as the industry standard, inveighed against as much for its success as for any actual misdeeds. For the record, ES&S markets a hand-marked paper ballot system as well as its line of ballot-marking devices, though it more aggressively pushes the latter.

County’s business: ES&S, Dominion Voting Systems, and Hart Voting System.

The Next Step

The next step in the purchase process will see Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris formally acknowledging the receipt of SCEC’s recommendation and signing an order for the Shelby County Commission to arrange a purchase for new machines to be used in August and thereafter. Word is that he will leave it to the county commission to accept the SCEC recommendation or make its own choice. If it does the latter, presumably it would opt to accept the low bid from among the various bids received in response to Linda Phillips’ RFP. And, as indicated, such an action might well be subject to legal action.

In any case, at some point in the near future, Shelby County stands to be outfitted with new voting devices, hopefully in time for the August election round. Even if human disputation is off the table by then, there might still remain the issue of whether the COVID-19 virus will remain persistent to the point that a truly serious urgency will attach to Mulroy’s aforementioned suit to allow the unimpeded use of “no-excuseneeded” mail-in ballots. For the record, those would be hand-marked.

What is the Most Important Information I Should Know about DOVATO? If you have both human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, DOVATO can cause serious side effects, including: • Resistant HBV infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV infection before you start treatment with DOVATO. If you have HIV-1 and hepatitis B, the hepatitis B virus can change (mutate) during your treatment with DOVATO and become harder to treat (resistant). What is DOVATO? DOVATO is a prescription medicine that is used without other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults who have not received antiretroviral medicines in the past, and without known resistance to the medicines dolutegravir or lamivudine.

HIV-1 is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is not known if DOVATO is safe and effective in children.

Who should not take DOVATO? Do Not Take DOVATO if You: • have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine that contains dolutegravir or lamivudine.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using DOVATO? Tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have or have had liver problems, including hepatitis B or C infection.

David Quarles, a jack of all trades who’s well-known for his coveted IV by David jewelry line, has been teaching Zumba classes for the last 10 years, leading private lessons for St. Jude employees as well as teaching public classes at Jack Robinson Gallery each week.

When COVID-19 hit, Quarles was quick to transition to online classes, hosting his first virtual Zumba class on March 19th.

“It went well,” says Quarles. “I had a total of 69 people who joined in. Before, we averaged around 35 people for each class at Jack Robinson Gallery.”

Due to increase in demand, Quarles has expanded the class schedule to four days a week, and he says that broadening availability of classes has attracted new and former students from around the world, including Kuwait and Mexico.

“Now that I’m offering these classes online, I’ve had a surge of people who used to take classes seven years ago join in,” says Quarles. “It’s nice to be able to reconnect with everyone, and it’s a good way to stay connected, because we formed such a tight-knit community and a lot of friendships were formed.”

Quarles mainly teaches basic Zumba, dancing to a variety of Latin and World Music, including Samba, Afrobeat, Salsa, and Merengue. He says that Zumba can be a great way of burning 400-650 calories while forgetting everything that’s been going on, if only for an hour.

“It’s a good, happy exercise, and by the time you finish the class, you don’t really know that you’ve gotten in a workout other than your sweat, because you’ve had so much fun,” says Quarles. “It’s so beneficial now, because we’re bombarded with so much confusing news. It’s a good way for us to connect and have a sense of normalcy.”

“My parents are great. My dad was a DJ on 103.5, so my relationship with music was so deeply informed by his relationship with music. The whole classic blues love that I have in my music comes from growing up listening to that every day on my way to school.”

For anyone who’s heard Safiya’s unique blend of strength, sass, and melodicism, it’s no surprise that her principal inspiration is Nina Simone. “She’s the ultimate storyteller, through music. And she’s another genre-hopping artist who is good at many kinds of music.” And Safiya, like Simone, can inhabit her characters fully. It’s also no surprise that she was a theater major in Talibah Safiya college, before dropping out and moving to Brooklyn. “But ultimately, home gives me the cradle that I need to create as my best self,” she notes, describing her return to Memphis.

Here on native ground, she’s found a crew of musicians and others who can follow her every turn on a dime.

One of her latest collaborators has been Kevin Brooks, and it goes far beyond last year’s award-winning music video. “Kevin Brooks traveled around with us while we were on the road last year,” “I’m a genre-hopping musician. she says. “He was always in the corner, catching all I say that it’s diasporic music the cool shit. She puts it down to growing up between two worlds, in a sense. “Orange Mound and South Memphis is where I grew up, and I would say there was a duality to the way I grew up because my

alibah Safiya is feeling grateful in these days of quarantine, despite having her latest ambitions curtailed by the ongoing pandemic. The Memphis native has been performing her own songs around town for nearly a decade, but had clearly started an upward arc recently, culminating in her win, with director Kevin Brooks, of the Indie Memphis Hometowner Music Video award for her song “Healing Creek” last fall. Since then, she says, “I’ve been working on an EP that I recorded at Memphis Magnetic Recording.

Because it’s all on tape, that shifted my focus a little bit. We weren’t able to get into the studio, with the social distance practice.”

But you couldn’t really say she’s putting on the brakes, as she continues to drop new songs, all startlingly original, every month.

The most recent have been “Up and Down,” “The Great Disguise,” and “Golden Egg,” which came out on her birthday, April 23rd. The latter track, equal parts earthy soul goddess and Memphis trap seductress, should resonate deeply with local hip-hop fans. “That was a Soundcloud exclusive,” she notes.

“Because I’m singing over a classic Memphis trap beat that DJ Paul and Gangsta Boo did, a ’94 drop called ‘Cheefa da Reefa.’ I only put that on Soundcloud because I was using somebody else’s beat.”

While that’s standard practice these days, Safiya is more comfortable creating her music from the ground up. “I’ll start to craft the songs while I’m performing them. That’s how they start to get super musical, because we’re exploring it a lot in rehearsal.

It comes together, birthing in a live space.”

The intuitive, open-ended process has made her music hard to pigeonhole, and that’s just how she likes it. “I’m a genre-hopping musician. I say that it’s diasporic music because it’s every form of music that

I wouldn’t do this either, to be honest.

A better option is to mask-up and go get a curbside growler or a few cans of Memphis Sands, which is whipped up by Wiseacre. It’s a German Helles style — and why not? The Germans invented wholesome day-drinking with light, effervescent, and low-alcohol beer. Back in the old country, this was considered a perfectly normal familyfriendly activity. This is important these days if your carousing is limited to your own home. It’s hard to shake the little blighters.

If you are going to day-drink — and are someone who still plans to be employed at the end of all this — Sands isn’t a bad choice. Both the beer and that groovy Wiseacre artwork are inspired by our famous aquifers that supply the softest water in the country.

(On a non-beer note, this soft water is why you’ll get better results from dish and clothes washers if you use a lot less detergent.) I digress.

Sands is a light, crisp, and refreshing lager. Mostly it is beautifully simple: Pilsner malt, lager yeast, and that lovely Memphis water. It is low on bitterness and has an ABV of 5.1 percent. To be clear, all local beers are made with that lovely Memphis water, but Wiseacre has turned the can into something of an homage, so it’s hard to miss.

Either way, it’s the perfect, simple, summer style and is probably what you wish your festival beer tasted like when the wood smoke wafts through the crowd and fills your nose on a warm day surrounded by all the best pork in the world. I’m going to make my own by throwing meat from Charlie’s on a grill from Bishop’s Hearth and Home that’ll smoke up the back yard while I sip a great hometown beer.

Get yours from wherever you want, but do make it local. If we keep our heads about us — despite bat soup and the murder hornets — we might just return to the place where daydrinking was for the weekends. And after breakfast.

Or at least it will for you, gentle reader. I do this for a living.

t was a cruel joke on the part of Mother Nature. No, not the one where we accidently import the weapons-grade fauna from East Asia — twice. I mean the wheeze where we are blessed with a perfect week for Memphis in May Music Fest — comfortable, sunny but not hot — and have to cancel because it was just a hair too COVID-y.

We’ll try again in October.

Barbeque Fest has been moved to late September, but we aren’t inviting Ghana back to dinner until spring of 2021. Live at the Garden has gone quiet for the duration, and there will be no rip-roaring “Hip Hips!” from Carnival.

All we’re left with is swarms of murder hornets. Swell.

The truth is, in spring and summer Memphis is a festival. Which is something I’d never really thought about until this year. Like naptime in kindergarten, you never know what you have until you’ve lost it. With the city opening up somewhat, can we recreate that Memphis festival vibe at home? Well, not really. The whole point of a righteous festival hootenanny is to leave home and pack yourself butt-toflank in a sweating mob.

Unless you are pining for a second act of the COVID shuffle, don’t do this.

You can, however, get the taste of a Memphis festival at home — with a local lager. If you are going to be a purist about it, you could head to the smallest room in the house with

Dreamland Follies Netflix’s Hollywood is a revisionist romp through Tinseltown history.

May 14-20, 2020

The period immediately after World War II was a crucial time in film history. The studio system, which had arisen over the former 30 years, was trying to get back to normal, as its stars, craftspeople, and audience returned home. But the prewar status quo, with the all-powerful studio bosses controlling vast empires of theaters that they fed with a steady output of A and B pictures, was never to return.

In 1948, United States vs. Paramount Pictures forced the studios to sell off their theater chains.

Under the Paramount Consent Decree, no longer would Paramount-owned theaters play exclusively Paramount pictures. The power of the studio bosses began to wane, setting the stage for a new era of agents, managers, independent contractors, and upstart indie producers that shaped Hollywood as we know it today.

The films, too, took on a darker tone.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt had agreed not to pursue the anti-trust action against the studios in exchange for the bosses agreeing to produce wartime propaganda for the government. With the war finished, rah rah military films such as Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (written by noted socialist Dalton Trumbo) gave way to the darker meditations such as It’s a Wonderful Life and The Best Years of Our Lives. Hardboiled crime pictures that French critics would later tie together as film noir became incredibly popular. If the dominant mood of the war years was “We’re all in this together!” noir saw capitalist America as a war of all against all.

Tinseltown in turmoil seems like ripe pickings for story material.

That’s the promise of Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix miniseries Hollywood. Taking some of the old Hollywood Babylon legends of sex, corruption, and debauchery out for a thinly fictionalized spin could make for some quality kicks. Especially the sex part. This is Hollywood, after all.

Everyone’s ridiculously good looking. In the right hands, a figure like

Hollywood starts promisingly enough. Jack Costello (David Corenswet) is one of thousands of former G.I.s who, we are told in the opening newsreel sequence, flocked to Southern California to seek their fortunes. His wife Henrietta (Maude Apatow) is pregnant, and the meager work Jack is getting as an extra just isn’t cutting it. While drowning his sorrows at a Hollywood watering hole, Jack meets Ernie West (Dylan McDermott) who offers him a job as a gas station attendant to help make ends meet.

Once he puts on the garrison cap and starts to fill tanks, Jack finds out the real nature of Ernie’s business. The gas station is a front for a high-end prostitution ring, and Jack is expected to service the oversexed daughters of the rich. The money is excellent, and Jack has few qualms about becoming a himbo for the likes of Avis Amberg (Patti LuPone), whose husband runs Ace Studios. But his gigolo days come to a premature end when he refuses to schtupp Cole Porter in a trailer behind the gas station. “If you won’t go have some fun with national treasure Cole Porter, you’d better find me someone who can!” fumes Ernie.

Sexual exploitation is the order of the day in Hollywood, and at least that feels pretty authentic. But for all the sleaze and the betrayal, Hollywood feels kinda lifeless and sterile. Part of the problem lies with the leads. Murphy has a type: darkhaired guys with giant, square jaws.

Corenswet, Criss, and Picking all fit the description, and the recurring joke of actors being picked more for their looks than their acting ability seems to apply to the show itself. A story with this much fornication set in the underbelly of dreamland needs to be more fun.

Beware and Be Aware

For the past couple of months, time has seemed to stand still, as we all spend most of our time at home.

In response, sexual predators have left the streets and arcades and moved to using the internet to prey on young people.

On April 23, 2020, Virginia detectives put together a task force called Operation Covid Crackdown that resulted in 30 individuals being arrested for online child solicitation. In 2018, 52 percent of the criminal human trafficking cases active in the U.S. were sex trafficking cases involving children.

Technology has drastically changed our lives, especially while we’re under the “safer at home” mandate. Many children have been in a vulnerable state, and that’s coupled with other mental health concerns.

Predators are well aware that millions of children around the globe are at home due to the current pandemic. The internet has long made it easy for predators to disguise their identity. Many will portray themselves as just another high school student, bummed about being stuck home.

So the question is how can you keep your child safe from a disguised and deceptive online predator?

As with mental health, online child solicitation is not talked about very much in most households. Predators often seek children who are struggling with low self-esteem or appear to not have friends. They can pick up on these cues from reading children’s social media posts. It’s healthy to initiate a conversation with your child about the risk of sharing their personal information online. Make sure your child understands that adults, young adults, and teenagers can pretend to be younger or fake a similar mindset as their victims.

As a parent, you need to set clear expectations. Let’s face it — even as adults we are protective of our phones. Pre-adolescents and teenagers can often show resistance when it comes to parents checking in. Have a family meeting to set clear expectations about what your child should be posting in chat rooms. It’s helpful to show them news articles about online predators in order to make expectations realistic.

And there needs to be a clear open door policy. Children often feel ashamed to talk about certain topics from fear of being judged or outcast. Make it clear to your child that he or she can talk to you about anything. The important thing with an open door policy is that parents have to name “anything.” It’s okay to say words/phrases like “naked photos,” “sexual conversation,” “private chats.”

Here are some apps every parent should be monitoring: TikTok, WhatsApp, Tumblr, Snapchat, Instagram, Omegle, Reddit, and Wattpad.

If your child encounters a predator, it is important that you don’t blame him or her or become negatively reactive. Tell your child you are proud of their honesty and willingness to talk.

Immediately take screenshots of messages and photos, report the user on the social media platform, and contact your local child abuse hotline.
