OUR 1616TH ISSUE 02.13.20 By the time you’re reading this, the all-important New Hampshire primary vote will have been completed. We’ll all know whether the old white finger-pointing guy beat the young white gay guy who acts kinda like a Republican. Or maybe one of the two white women senators managed to move up in the standings and win enough votes to get “momentum.”

Or maybe the other old white guy — the former vice president — came out of nowhere and “beat expectations.”

It’s all so meaningless. As it’s currently constructed, the presidential primary system is skewed beyond any possible usefulness, except to provide bloviation opportunities for the cable news outlets for a month.

The Iowa caucuses are absurdly undemocratic. Anyone with a night job or who has small children to care for or who is out of town or who lacks transportation to get to the caucus site is out of luck. Or maybe you’re physically challenged and can’t spend several hours arguing a candidate’s merits in a local gymnasium. Or maybe you just don’t think this is the way democracy should work. Tough. You don’t get to vote in the Iowa presidential primary. Go suck on a corncob, loser.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, it would be difficult to find two states less representative of the current Democratic Party. It’s almost like the Republicans picked them out to sabotage their opponents. New Hampshire is 94 percent white; Iowa, by contrast, is a bastion of diversity with 91 percent white residents.

People of color make up around 40 percent of Democrats, nationwide. I don’t think it’s an accident that when the first two primaries rolled around this year, all candidates of color had dropped out. The Democratic Party is killing itself with this system.

Imagine if, say, South Carolina, had gone first, followed by California a week later. Would the party have the same two front-runners? I seriously doubt it. Californian Kamala Harris would still be in the conversation, and so would Cory Booker, since South Carolina has a large African-American vote. Joe Biden might have started with a win. Who knows? If you started with those two states, the system would skew in an entirely different direction, and again, not necessarily one that’s reflective of the party as a whole. The point is, singling out certain states to begin the nomination process is a bad idea, no matter what states you choose.

Billionaire candidate Mike Bloomberg, another old white guy, isn’t even pretending to play along with the current system. That’s because he’s so rich he can ignore the primaries and just buy ads all over the country — and all over your Facebook feed. Bloomberg realizes that Iowa and New Hampshire are basically meaningless if you’ve got the money to ignore them. This ain’t the way to get the best presidential nominee, folks. Not even close.

So, I hear you saying: What’s the answer, smarty-pants editor guy?

I thought you’d never ask. It’s staring us in the face: Super Tuesday. The first one, on March 3rd, will feature 13 states, American Samoa, and Democrats abroad. Expand that process: Have four Super Tuesdays on sequential months, say February through May in the presidential election year. Tie the four Super Tuesdays to the four principal time zones in the U.S. and rotate who goes first every four years.

You’d have to tweak it to account for states with acreage in two zones. So give Tennessee to the Central and put Indiana and Kentucky in the East. Since the Mountain Time Zone is a little sparse, population-wise, put the Dakotas and Nebraska in with the other big-sky states. Add Alaska and Hawaii to the Pacific, and you’re set. The Super Tuesday Quadfecta!

Candidates could focus on regional campaigning instead of blowing all their money in one state, which would dampen the Bloomberg effect. Tennessee companies say anti-LGBTQ law will chase money, events from state.

Hilton, the Tennessee Titans, the Nashville Predators, IKEA, Nike, Amazon, CMT, Postmates, and Warby Parker.

These are but some of 36 corporations doing business in Tennessee that believe the state’s recently passed law to discriminate against the LGBTQ community in adoptions will hurt business. Those corporations and 109 small businesses issued a letter last week saying “policies that signal that the state is not welcoming to everyone put our collective economic success at risk.”

The law shelters faith-based adoption agencies from lawsuits by any group claiming discrimination. It prohibits faith-based groups from participating “in any child placement for foster care or adoption that would violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions.” State senators passed the bill, and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed it last month.

The letter against the new law was organized by the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Freedom for All Americans, GLAAD, and the Human Rights Council.

“As we seek to maintain and grow our world-class workforce, we often face questions about whether our state is welcoming to the LGBTQ community and beyond,” reads the companies’ letter. “It is both a business imperative and core to our corporate values that our customers, our employees and their families, and our potential employees feel fully included in the

The Nashville Predators said the city has seen enormous fan turnout for the NHL All-Star Weekend, the NHL Stanley Cup Final, and SEC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

“Passing discriminatory legislation would limit revenue for the city of Nashville and the state of Tennessee by inhibiting our ability to secure events like those and future events such as league marquee events, NCAA games, award shows, and countless potential concerts,” the Predators said in the letter.

Postmates, the tech-forward delivery service,

said it “continues to be alarmed by the Lee Administration’s anti-LGBTQ agenda, particularly as we consider expanding our presence in the Volunteer State.

“State leaders cannot and will not be able to expect companies like ours to power its economic engines while supporting legislation that undermines our ability to feel welcome in this state unless they commit to a new pathway to include all families and all workers,” the company said in the letter. “HB 386 undermines businesses’ ability to recruit top talent and grow in the state by policies that say not all are welcome — and it’s just plain wrong.

“To our Postmates fleet, our customers, our small business owners, our entire community: We stand with you no matter who you love or who you are, and we will not accept this kind of flagrant hatred.”

Before the vote, some senators warned passing the bill could hinder business in the state, with companies and conventions passing over Tennessee for more gayfriendly states.

But the bill’s Senate sponsor, Sen. Paul Rose (R-Tipton and part of Shelby County), said the bill “was about the right to choose.”

“If you believe in freedom, you’ll put aside the issues thrown at you from the business community and look to the roots of this nation,” Rose said.

Some drama was expected, but nothing like the more-thanaudible gasp that exuded from the audience at Monday’s meeting of the Shelby County Commission, when Tami Sawyer articulated what was suddenly and shockingly becoming obvious: “There will be no new machines in 2020,” said Sawyer, summarizing it all in an epiphany after an hour or so of intense debate and argument on both sides of the speakers’ dock regarding what sort of new voting machines the county should get in its long-planned buy in time for the August election cycle locally.

County Election Coordinator Linda Phillips had been making and repeating that promise of new machines for most of the last year, kindling up an evergrowing local controversy as to which type of machine. On Sunday she had published a viewpoint in The Commercial Appeal in which the following two sentences were the key ones: “Now that we are about to replace our outdated voting equipment, the controversy has reached the boiling point. I have spent my career conducting elections, and I’d like to share my viewpoint.”

Phillips’ viewpoint, as spread out over two pages in the paper, was that ballotmarking devices (BMDs) are superior to voter-marked paper ballots (VMPBs) because, she argued, they are more secure from error, though she acknowledged they were somewhat more expensive as machinery. A contrary point of view is being argued by a determined group of local voter-reform activists, who stress that the hand-marked method is cheaper and more easily checked for accuracy

and that the ballot-marking devices favored by Phillips are eminently hackable.

To underscore the latter point, one of the VMPB advocates, Bennie Smith, who doubles as a Democratic member of the Shelby County Commission and styles himself an expert on voting technology, had demonstrated to a previous meeting of the commission that he could insert a predetermined vote total into a result line of the BMD machine’s paper readout.

Both kinds of machine, Phillips has pointed out, possess a “paper trail” capability allowing voters to see and approve a printout of their ballot. (Critics of BMDs, the machines employing ballot-marked devices, complain that voters are asked to base their comparison ultimately on an unintelligible bar code.)

Anyway, the verbal battle was raging as usual on Monday, though Phillips herself was absent, when everything became moot.

Prompted by commission chairman Mark Billingsley, Marcy Ingram, deputy county attorney and de facto legal adviser to commission members, announced to the assembly at large that state law — to wit, TCA 29-111 — forbade any purchase of new voting technology without a prior voter referendum.

“Yes, Mr. Chairman earlier today, we determined that in the budget, the commission has a lot of leeway to use CIP funds, general obligation bonds, to pay for the voting machines. And there’s a statute on the books that’s about 15 years old that says that if you use general obligation bonds you do have to put it out to the voters to let them decide whether or House District 97 candidate Gabby Salinas (l), one of two Democrats running, enjoys an exotic Mideastern dance in her honor at a weekend fundraiser.

That was Agenda Item #33: “Resolution of the Board of County Commissioners of Shelby County, Tennessee, urging the Shelby County Election Commission to pursue a voter-marked paper ballot approach when spending county funds for new voting equipment.” The primary sponsors of the resolution were Commissioners Van Turner, Willie Brooks, Sawyer, and Reginald Milton.

The background was the fact that the Shelby County Election Commission had, at Phillips’ request, issued an RFP (request for proposal) to potential bidders who would supply new voting machines for use by her promised date of August, and the controversy over which kind of machine had flared up there.

sibilities built into Shelby County government — in this case, that, while the SCEC could decide on the machinery, the county commission could vote Yes or No on whether to fund the purchase — the advocates of hand-marked ballots, prevented from speaking at SCEC on grounds that the RFP was underway, had resolved to take their case to the commision.

Before attorney Ingram’s bombshell announcement, the VMPB activists — law professor and former County Commissioner Steve Mulroy, teacher and recent city council candidate Erika Sugarmon, former legislator and school board member Mike Kernell, and veteran rights activist Dr. Suhkara A. Yahweh — had pleaded their case, with eloquence and examples.

It was all for naught, though there would indeed be a vote on the agenda item, expressing a preference for ultimate use of hand-marked ballots by a de facto party-line vote of 7-6, with yea votes coming from Democrats Brooks, Mickell Lowery, Eddie Jones, Milton, Sawyer, Michael Whaley, and Turner and no votes coming from Republicans Mick Wright, David Brandon, Amber Mills, Brandon Morrison, chairman Billingsley, and Democrat Edmund Ford.

In the fallout from the bombshell, there was general discontent from commissioners, whatever their ideology or point of view on the merits of particular machines, that word of the potential predicament had not been sounded long before, that, as Chairman Billingsley put it, “the people charged with the election would have made us aware of this by now.”

Commissioner Wright cited the ultimate irony of the situation: “It’s disappointing that the state has this rule in place, that the voters would have to vote using the system we want to replace in order to have the system that we want to replace be replaced.”

So, with that being said, you would have to have a special election or have to put the item on the August ballot, if you intend to use CIP.” Billingsley reinforced the point: “So in layman’s language for people in the audience and people listening at home … there would have to be a referendum.”

“That would be correct,” Ingram replied. And moments later, Commissioner Sawyer expressed the bottom line: “No new machines in 2020.”

Sawyer went on to argue — in the long run, successfully — that it would still be useful to vote on the resolution that had been in question before the bombshell.

Escape from the Friend Zone

Havier Green (aka Memphis hip-hop artist The Poet, Havi) first saw Kelsee Woods four years ago. “I was handing out flyers for a big show I was doing,” he says. “I saw her walking on campus, and my strategy was to give all the cute girls flyers. She said, ‘I’m definitely going to be there. October 29th is my birthday as well.’ So I was like, ‘Very cool! It can be both of our birthday parties!’”

Then a student at University of Memphis, Kelsee is now a Grizz Girl and actor/dancer at Playhouse on the Square. She didn’t go to the show. “He didn’t even leave a trace in my mind. I never thought about that show after he handed me that flyer.”

But she left a big impression on Havier. “When I got up close to her, how she held her mouth was really 10 interesting to me. It was kind of firm, like she was giving a lot of thought to

whatever she was going to say.”

Havier slid into her Instagram DMs — “just enough to not seem like I was a stalker.”

Kelsee came to the next show, and the two struck up a friendship. Then, Kelsee told Havier she had a boyfriend.

“This would usually ruin things for me, and I would lash out or just go about my business. But I thought, let me try something different. Let’s hang out as friends,” he says.

“I was never attracted to him like that,” says Kelsee. “He would wear all black every day, with a skullcap — and he’d pull it down over his eyes, almost to his nose. I was never sure what his entire face looked like. All of my friends were like, ‘Who’s that guy you’re hanging around?’”

Eventually, Havier confessed his love. “I don’t think I was aware of what was really happening to me on the inside,” Kelsee says. “I wanted to spend most of my time with him, but I didn’t want to give him full intimacy

because I wanted some skateboard guy. … Before I could even reply, he said, ‘You don’t have to give me some bland message about how you don’t love me back. I don’t care if you don’t love me back. I’ll still love you the same.’ And that shook me. I didn’t know a love that feels good, even though it’s unrequited, could even exist.

After that, I went to a party with the guy who was supposed to be my boo at the time. Havi was there, and he was definitely avoiding me.”

“At that point, I knew I loved her, but I couldn’t have her, so I was trying to move on,” he recalls.

What he didn’t know was that Kelsee had just taken LSD for the first time.

“At that moment of seeing Havi, I really felt it. I walked away from the party and got lost.” Eventually, she found herself back at her apartment. “I was by myself.

I was getting a little scared, so I picked up the phone and called Havi.”

Havier borrowed his brother’s car and rushed to her side. “I knew from

my experience with psychedelics that you don’t want to be alone your first time,” he says. “You reach that wall of fear, and it can really mess you up.”

Havier lined the floor with pillows and played Radiohead and Pink Floyd.

They talked for hours. “At the end of it, she was like, ‘Oh, my god. I think I love you!’”

They kissed for the first time that night and have been a couple ever since. “I always jokingly apologize to him, ‘I’m sorry it took LSD to make me realize I love you.’”

No Musicians!

“I thought he was kind of lame,” says Michelle Bush Schrader.

She first saw her now-husband Jeremy Schrader on stage. “I was in music school studying classical guitar, but I was interested in jazz.”

nights at The Cove. “I wouldn’t even talk to Jeremy. I’d just go and sit and have a glass of wine and oysters and just listen to the music and then go home. … I had been in many relationships with Memphis musicians, and I was like, I’m done. I want to find a doctor. I want to find a lawyer.”

Eventually she asked Jeremy for jazz guitar lessons. “I showed up to what is now our house, and I realized he didn’t know much about jazz guitar,” she says.

The two hit it off and started hanging out on a strictly not-a-date basis. Jeremy realized he was hooked when he went to a Radiohead concert in St. Louis. “She’s a big Radiohead fan, and while I was there at the show — and I probably had a few drinks — I started texting her pictures of the band.

I think that was when we really started communicating.”

One day at lunch, Michelle told Jeremy about her no-musicians policy.

Jeremy just nodded. Three months later, they were engaged. Six months later, they were married. “I had been divorced and then widowed — my second wife had cancer — so I had been in several long-term serious relationships. I think Michelle was just kind of in a place where she was ready to stop playing games. I think we both just said, ‘Okay, this seems like it works. Why even fight it? Why play around?’ Let’s just do this and we can work out the details later — which we’re still doing.”

The Long Game

“When I was about 5 years old, I was at a birthday party,” Kalki Winter says.

“We were playing around a Maypole, chasing each other around, and my

hand happened to touch Wendy’s hand, and I literally felt like I’d been shot. I had a crush on her from age 5, and was too shy to ever really tell her.”

But the two kids were soon separated. “I grew up in a a cult — a religious community — and we all moved as a group down to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, because that’s what you do,” Wendy says. “Eventually, we got kicked out of that community and moved back to Memphis.”

“I saw her for the first time in several years — we were teenagers at this point — dancing,” says Kalki. “She looked incredible, but I was still just too sad and insecure.”

Years later, Kalki ran into Wendy’s

brother and asked about her. Turns out, they were living in the same apartment complex — and Wendy was about to get married. “I was crestfallen,” Kalki says.

“My brother was being evicted from an apartment, and so like all 20-yearolds, he had a huge eviction party,” says Wendy. “I was the only one of age; my younger siblings were at the party, so I decided to guard the keg, which was in my name. That whole evening, Kalki hung out and talked to me. Meanwhile, the party went crazy, the police got called. Everybody disappeared,” Wendy says.

“She was the only one not streetwise enough to split when the cops showed

“I got invited out to a party by some friends who were trying to get me out of the house not long after a nasty breakup,” says Jess Vandenberg. “But parties aren’t my thing; I’m really continued on page 12 Jess Vandenberg and Haley Greenwell

up,” says Kalki. “I remember telling my sister that I would never, ever cheat on my husband — but if I did, it would be with that guy I was talking to,” Wendy says.

Eventually, Wendy did split with her husband and ran into Kalki at the Earth Day celebration in Overton Park in 1994. “It ended up being a 10-hour, unplanned date,” says Wendy. “We just had a magical day.”

But the course of true love never did run smooth.“It was a lot of push and pull. We dated and broke up so many times that it got to the point where our friends stopped asking; it just became embarrassing,” Wendy says.

They tried moving to Wyoming to get high-paying jobs in the resort industry, but things blew up again and Wendy returned home. “I really did not want to live in Memphis,” says Kalki. “But when I realized she wasn’t coming back, I knew I was in for the long haul. I settled everything and came back to Memphis, where I was so ready to not be.”

The couple married in February 1997. “People were mocking us because we broke up so much,” says Kalki. “But we felt so secure when we finally committed. We left it all out on the field.”

Thanks to Jim Carrey, Vandenberg met Haley Greenwell. “It was an open, empty house with art all over the walls like a gallery,” Haley says. “I always joke that I was there for the party, and Jess was there for the art. Some friends introduced us, and we spent hours talking and flirting before the party ended. That’s when we found out the party was moving to Raiford’s Disco Downtown. When I found out Jess had never been there, I knew we had to go.

We had our first kiss on the dance floor to Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody.’”

“We were pretty much obsessed with each other from the day we met,” Jess says.

“We were basically stereotypical U-Haul lesbians, in that we immediately fell in love and moved in together,” says Haley. “Two years into dating, Jess asked me to sit down on our couch to watch an animated video she ‘made for a client.’”

It was actually a proposal. “After a few seconds, she caught on and broke down crying,” Jess says.

“I was completely surprised,” Haley

says, “Especially considering that Jess told me a few months into dating that I would need to be the one to propose ’cause she has ‘been ready’ to marry me.”

The Human Cost

Safiyah met Biyan (not their real names) at a mosque. “The lead scholar of the mosque introduced us because he thought that we would make a good match. And we did,” Safiyah says.

Biyan is from Kurdistan in northern Iraq. He was in America studying for his master’s degree in English, planning to become a teacher. “I was intimidated by him because he was so handsome and funny and sweet,” she says. “Not to sound jaded — and I think it might be a lot of the Memphis in me — but I just thought it was fake.”

But she soon became convinced of his sincerity. “He pursued me for a while because I was pretty hesitant. I came to realize that that’s 100 percent who he is. He’s really just a sweet and genuinely innocent person. He naturally attracts people, and he’s also an excellent teacher, so he had a lot of students.”

But Safiyah and Biyan’s love was playing out against the background of President Trump’s travel ban. Biyan’s

student visa was about to expire.

“Kurdistan wasn’t on the list, but we were pretty on edge while this was happening,” says Safiyah. “We wanted to get married, but we couldn’t find any answers. If we got married and his visa ran out, would he be detained while we were applying for a marriage visa? The only way we could get answers was if we had money to get a lawyer. Nobody really knew what was going to happen.

We made the unfortunate decision for him to return to Iraq, and then he could apply from there to return here.”

That was a year and a half ago.

While in Kurdistan, Biyan received a full scholarship to pursue his Ph.D. in America. But he has not been allowed to return. As the situation in Syria and Iraq deteriorated, Biyan repeatedly made the long trek to Baghdad to plead his case with government officials.

“He was pulled over twice by ISIS groups on the road from his city to Baghdad and pulled out of the car.

But they didn’t cut his head off. He lived through Saddam Hussain, and his father was imprisoned. He’s a very

“Our mutual friend called me and said, ‘That guy Jamie who lives over here, he wants to know if you’ll go out with him,’” Sara Hall says. “I told her no. If he doesn’t have the gonads to call me himself, I’m not going out with him.”

Five minutes later, Jamie Hall called her. “I wasn’t really looking to date anyone, so I gave him a hard time.

I told him, ‘Here’s the deal, buddy.

If you’re going to take me out, be prepared to pay for everything and don’t expect anything in return. We’ll just go and get to know each other.’ He said okay.”

“I was actually going through a divorce at the time. I’d been single for a while and decided it was time to start dating again,” says Jamie.

A few nights later, the pair went to Waffle House. “It was late night. We had some coffee, and we had some pie,” Jamie says. “We really just kind of laid things out on the table for each continued on page 14

resilient person. We speak morning, noon, and night, and have for the last year and a half. He completely changed me. I went from someone who didn’t believe in love anymore to somebody who is completely in love with a man who is 10,000 miles away. I’m not really sure if I’ll ever see him again.”

other. This is what I expect. This is what I don’t like. We had been there for three or four hours drinking coffee and talking.”

“The whole date was awesome,” says Sara. “I really enjoyed getting to know Jamie. I had no issues at this point.”

By the time Jamie drove Sara home, it was 3:30 a.m. On the way, they got pulled over by police for a minor infraction. When the cop ran his license, it came back suspended. A year earlier, Jamie had gotten a speeding ticket in Collierville. He paid the ticket with a check. “Little did I know that my soon-to-be ex-wife had cleaned out our bank account.”

The check to the city of Collierville bounced. “Here I am on my first date, and I’m about to go to jail. A second cop came up to the car, and he was a real smartass.”

“He said, ‘Where’s your dope at, dope boy?’” recalls Sara.

“We had words. I was arrested,” Jamie says.

“While he was in the police car, the cop starts rifling through the vehicle we were traveling in. He pulled this red négligé out from under Jamie’s seat. The cop held it up and said, ‘Was he planning on making you wear this later?’ I said, ‘I have no idea.’ They were talking all kinds of shit to me about

him. It was horrible.”

Jamie went to jail, and the sheriff escorted Sara back home, where her mother was waiting. “I said, ‘Oh, my god, Mom. Worst first date ever. … He got arrested!’ I promise you, the next words out of her mouth were, ‘You’re going to marry that man.’”

Jamie and Sara Hall will soon celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary.

Government Love

Matt Kuhn was a newly minted county commissioner. Heidi Verbeek was the Deputy Director of Community Services. They met at the Crime Victims Assistance Night Dinner. “She was wearing these incredible red shoes that you could see from across the room, and I thought, I would love to talk to her,” Matt says. “Then she came to our table and talked to everybody at the table except me.”

“We had been in mutual meetings and obviously found each other attractive but really never did anything about it,” says Heidi. When Matt didn’t make the first move, she got his personal email address and asked if he knew who she was. “I said, ‘Who doesn’t know the most gorgeous woman in Shelby County government?’”

They talked on the phone, went out for meals, and were soon close enough to go on a cruise together. “It’s what

we call the best ever because it was absolutely amazing,” Heidi says. “Matt had never cruised before, so I got to turn him on to that.”

“Now she can’t stop me from booking cruises,” adds Matt.

They dated for about six months before Matt decided to pop the question in December 2009. “I wanted to do it the right way. I enlisted the help of a county commissioner at the time, Deidre Malone. Deidre was able to lure Matt and Heidi Kuhn

“Matt knew he was not allowed to ask me questions,” Heidi says. “He was supposed to recuse himself from any voting that had to do with anything I was presenting.”

So when Malone yielded her time to Matt, Heidi wondered, “What is going on?”

Matt went to the podium with “WILL YOU MARRY ME” written on five pieces of paper. “When I got to the last paper, I heard the collective gasp from the gallery,” says Heidi. “He was down on one knee.”

Since the commission meetings are live-streamed and broadcast, video of the proposal ended up on CNN. “Jackson Baker broke the story,” Matt says. “He made it part of his column for the week. So we’ve been in the Flyer before.”

The couple got married in Minglewood Hall the next May, on a day when historic storms swept across the state. “That’s not what a bride wants on her wedding day!”

Heidi says. “People say, rain on your wedding day is good luck. I say, ‘What about tornadoes on your wedding day?’”

Matt and Heidi danced down the aisle together. “We had a lot of surprises for our guests, and even to this day, people still say that was the best wedding that they’ve ever attended.”

The ambiguity in your answer, I’m convinced, is related to this team ranking dead last among American Athletic Conference teams in turnover margin and next-to-last in assistto-turnover ratio. The irony is that the team has four players seemingly capable of seizing the ball when a game grows frenzied: Alex Lomax, Damion Baugh, Boogie Ellis, and Tyler Harris. So why so many sloppy turnovers, so many of the unforced variety that make Hardaway cringe like he’s discovered a dog dropping on his welcome mat? The four potential generals are still learning their games.

(Yes, a college sophomore — like Lomax and Harris — is still a young player.) For this team to reach the Big Dance with any chance of advancing, it must know who will handle the ball in crunch time. Pointguard committees don’t cut down nets.

o ahead and cry a river for Penny Hardaway and his Memphis Tigers. A Top-10 team the first week in January, the Tigers now find themselves in the home stretch of the 2019-20 season without James Wiseman, without D.J. Jeffries, and without a spot even in the Top 25.

They sport a still-solid record (17-6) but are considered a “bubble team,” at best, among prognosticators drawing up brackets for the 68-team NCAA tournament. With four of their next six games on the road (starting Thursday in Cincinnati), the Tigers must run a gauntlet of villains to reach the promised land for the first time since 2014. How do they do it? Here are four factors to watch.

• Make Precious moments. Lots of them. The damaging loss to USF last Saturday may not have happened had Precious Achiuwa not been sitting on the bench for 12 minutes of the first half, saddled with two fouls. Achiuwa is one of the top two or three freshmen in the country and a finalist for the Julius Erving Award (given to the nation’s top small forward). He’s been a double-double machine this season (12 of them so far) despite not being a volume shooter.

(Achiuwa has taken no more than 10 shots in five of the Tigers’ last six games.)

Particularly with Jeffries sidelined, the Tiger offense needs to find Achiuwa, if not run through him as the season winds down. He can score in traffic, from midrange, and even connect from three-point country. Memphis may still be in search of a true point guard, but the team’s star has been here all along. And he needs to learn to play with foul trouble. Don’t let this season end without maximizing Achiuwa’s impact.

• Be angry at tip-off. The Tigers don’t start fast. They really haven’t in two seasons under Hardaway. A lead at the 1 of a 1 first media timeout (four minutes into game) is as rare as a Louisville T-shirt at FedExForum. Particularly on the road, this has to change. Temple coach Aaron McKie said last week that his first priority in game-planning for Memphis was to take the crowd out of the game. The Owls indeed scored the game’s first six points and led (8-7) at the first media timeout.

They just aren’t built to last with a team as talented as the current Tigers. Hardaway must instill in his team the importance of not climbing Comeback Mountain before halftime. Perhaps this means slowing the pace of play immediately after tip-off.

Perhaps it means getting to the foul line.

Crowds at Cincinnati, Connecticut, 1 ofTulane 1 SMU, and are ready to chew this “overrated” team up if they start slowly.

• Set a Cougar trap. TheTigers’ best chance to regain support for an NCAA tournament berth would be to sweep Houston. Memphis will host the Cougars on February 22nd (one of two home games in the upcoming six-game stretch) then play in Texas in the regular-season finale on March 8th. Houston is the only AAC team currently ranked and just destroyed a team (Wichita State) that has been ranked (and handled Memphis). The Tigers must establish themselves among the top two or three teams in their league.

Winning these two cat fights would accomplish that.

Earlier this winter, bushfires devastated much of Australia’s mainland, killing one-third of New South Wales’ koalas and burning 14.6 million acres of land.

“We have a bushfire season pretty much every year,” says Damien Klingberg, an expat of South Australia who now lives in Memphis. “But this is the worst there’s ever been — on record, anyway. And there are fires affecting all areas in all six of the mainland states.”

Klingberg moved to the States in 1994 and has since made a life here in Memphis working as a beertender at Memphis Made Brewing Co. When he heard of the fires in Australia and the devastation that came along with them, including damage to his family’s entire cherry orchard, he and his fellow Australian mate Nick Van De Velde decided they needed to contribute to the relief efforts by organizing a benefit concert at Memphis Made.

“Nick pulled me aside and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to do this,’ and I said, ‘You’re right, we do,’” says Klingberg. “And it kind of started from there. We approached the fantastic management and ownership of Memphis Made and said, ‘Hey, this is what we want to do. Can we do it?’ And they have been super supportive.”

For a suggested $5 donation toward relief funds, guests will enjoy the music of two of Klingberg’s bands, Piper Down and Solar Powered Love, as well as other local acts Jeff Hulett, The Switchblade Kid, and DJ Zach Ives. Memphis Made will also donate $1 from each beer sale to organizations picked out by Klingberg and Van De Velde: WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue, Wildlife Victoria, Wildlife Rescue Queensland, SA Bushfire Appeal, and Wildlife Recovery Fund.

Run the 901 Race Series hosts Laurelwood 15K, its third of four races this year, this Sunday to benefit local organizations Church Health, Wolf River Conservancy, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mid-South (BBBSMS).

BBBSMS has served more than 16,000 young boys and girls, or “littles,” in the Memphis community since 1968, matching them up with “bigs,” or mentors, to serve as positive role models by spending quality time with them at least twice a month.

BBBSMS has nearly reached its $1,000 goal for race day, but Susan George, the program’s executive director, says she hopes they surpass the goal so they can better serve children who have not yet been matched with mentors.

“This funding allows us to recruit additional mentors for the kids who we have waiting,” she says. “We currently have 130 kids on our waitlist, and 92 percent of those kids are boys.”

George says it’s important for these children to have mentors to look up to, as most of them are struggling with parents’ incarceration, divorce, or death.

“A lot of the kids have challenges that they don’t know how to work through, and mentors, with the support of our program, are able to help them work through those things,” she says. “That way they can realize their potential and move on to bigger and better things for themselves.”

n 1968, Stax was bouncing back from having lost its back catalog to Atlantic, even as the entire African-American community was bouncing back from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Enter the Staple Singers, seemingly destined to heal wounds in both places.

They brought with them to Stax a proven track record — a decade’s worth of albums elsewhere — not to mention the unique, soulful blend in the voices of Roebuck “Pops” Staples, daughters Cleotha and Mavis, and son Pervis (later replaced by his sister Yvonne).

And their song catalog was already loaded with calls for political awareness, a benchmark of their popularity in both gospel and folk circles. They had only just covered Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” for Epic earlier in the year.

Thus, the evolution of the group’s sound in the years after signing to Stax became both a measure and a maker of people’s determination to act on King’s vision of empowerment.

As such, they’re the perfect group to honor with a major archival release in the month that’s designated to celebrate African-American history.

In recent years, Craft Recordings has issued a distinguished line of Stax rereleases. Some have been notable CD box sets, such as the Grammy-winning collection, Stax ’68: A Memphis Story, focused on every single released in that pivotal year; others have been classic Stax LPs, painstakingly remastered and pressed locally to the highest standards in their Memphis Masters series. Now, with the release of Come Go With Me: The Stax Collection on February 21st, Craft offers something that’s a bit of both: a deluxe LP box set, complete with an oversized, illustration-laden booklet, containing remastered versions of all six of the Staple Singers’ studio albums on Stax, spanning 1968–1974, plus a seventh compiling their B-sides and

It’s an investment, to be sure, but also a priceless slice of cultural history. If one hallmark of 1970s popular music was bringing socially conscious lyrics to foundations more

funky than folky, the Staples’ trajectory surely mapped out that terrain for many more to follow.

It’s not as if they weren’t funky from the get-go, but when they landed in Memphis, it was clearly unavoidable, once their more spare folk-gospel collided with the MGs. With their first two albums on Stax, produced by Steve Cropper, there’s plenty of funk, brought by a band that included Cropper, Al Jackson Jr., Duck Dunn, Marvell Thomas, and the Memphis Horns.

But there are also folk touchstones. Both clearly signalled the group’s allegiance to either the folk-rock scene, the San Francisco scene, or both, as did their first single for the label, an original: “Long Walk to D.C.” Yet from the first needle drop on the first track of the first album, “We’ve Got to Get Ourselves Together,” the Staple Singers’ magic seems in place: a call to action that could apply to either sexual politics or the peace movement, made urgent by Mavis’ galvanizing voice and the buttery harmonies of a family surrounding her, and the band’s groovy bass and drums, topped with chicken-scratch guitar, giving it all a mighty thump.

It was these elements that Stax president Al Bell seized on when he took over the production seat for their third and subsequent records.

He upped the funk, replacing Cropper and company with the famed Swampers from Muscle Shoals. That led to the group’s first success on Stax, “Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-NaBoom-Boom),” which in turn paved the way for classics such as “Respect Yourself,” “I’ll Take You There,” and “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me).”

Once they’d hit their stride, they embodied an elusive combination of immense popular success (and danceability) blended with uncompromising ideals. It’s an example from which those living in the 21st century could learn a thing or two.

Possessing a half-ounce to 10 pounds of marijuana — a Class E felony — will get you an average of 1.28 years. Cut that by 10 percent, the researchers say, and the state government saves more than $752,000 every year.

However, state and local drug dogs will need to be trained to distinguish between hemp and marijuana, the researchers said.

That training could cost up to a total of $300,000 annually.

o, you’re cruising through Midtown, puffing on a perfectly legal doober of CBD flower. Some cop smells it, says it’s THC, wants to search your car, and maybe arrest you.

What can you do? Right now? Nothing. But that could change, thanks to the work of two Republican lawmakers in Tennessee. (You read that right.)

A Baptist and former special education teacher, Sen. Janice Bowling (RTullahoma), and a cattle-farming, Church of Christ congregant, Rep. Jay D. Reedy (R-Erin), want to make it harder for law enforcement officials to search your car (or anywhere else) “based solely on the odor of cannabis.”

CBD and industrial hemp were legalized thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, but much of the details of that legalization were left up to the individual states.

Regulations have come here in spurts and fits, but there’s been no “here’s-whatwe’re-doingwith-CBD” task force or regulatory agency formed. So CBD and hemp is still in the Wild West a bit.

The “odor-of-cannabis” bill shows just how wild. Historically speaking, Republicans have been tough on crime and not too keen on jazz cabbage or its fans. Yet, this bill seems a reversal on both stances.

However, it does fit Republican ideals in two ways. Industrial hemp and CBD are rising industries in Tennessee (read: business and bucks). They’re also agricultural products (read: Tennessee farmers are so on Republican brand, and they vote).

But a look under the hood of this possible new law shows it could be a boon to local governments. The folks in Nashville who put price tags on all kinds of legislative ideas say the bill would cut simple possession or casual exchange violations in half.

Researchers with the state government assumed there were about 18,690 convicted on such charges last year. Most of these

Their bill would prohibit the “revocation of parole, probation, or bail based on a drug test result that is positive for THC below a certain level.” It would also prohibit “public employers from taking adverse employment action and denying certain benefits based on such a test result.”

Few details of the legislation were immediately available. It was filed in late January and hasn’t yet been debated.

No Meat Meet-Up Crosstown Arts hosts monthly vegan potlucks.

“[At the time] it was called Memphis Area Animal Rights Activists, and shortly after we started, I met a guy named Vaughan Dewar, and he was interested in starting a vegan meet-up group to be more focused on the food aspects of veganism and not quite as much the protest side of things,” Phillips says.

“He joined our animal rights group, but on the side, he founded another group called Food Awareness, and he would put together these super-researched presentations and go to churches and other places to deliver these talks about the benefits of a plant-based diet.

“At some point, we merged our groups together and started doing less of the protest stuff and became more focused on

No meat, no problem — Crosstown Arts hosts vegan potluck meet-ups.

vegan meet-ups. So we would get together once a month at different restaurants around town and eat vegan food together,” she says, citing popular spots for vegans and non-vegans alike, like Pho Binh, which is famous for its lemongrass tofu.

Roughly 16 years later, the vegan movement in Memphis is stronger than ever. “Just in the past two years, with the whole plant-based movement, it’s much more socially acceptable to be vegan or ‘plant-based,’” she says. “I used to feel like I knew, or knew of, all the vegans in Memphis, but not anymore.”

It does feel like there are significantly more options for vegans in Memphis now than there were in the past. With the rise of local establishments like Imagine Vegan Cafe and the Raw Girls food truck, the city is embracing veganism more than ever.

Last year, when the cafe at Crosstown Arts transitioned from a full-service lunch and dinner menu to a smaller menu of pastries and coffee, Chris Miner, co-founder of Crosstown Arts, wanted to make sure the space was kept active.

That’s when he approached Phillips about organizing a monthly vegan potluck in the cafe space. Miner was familiar with Phillips’ history of organizing vegan food and drink events and thought that would be a perfect fit for Crosstown Arts.

The No Meat Meet-Up Vegan Potlucks launched last September, with about 30 attendees at the inaugural event.

Since then, the attendance has gone up each month, with attendees bringing a rich variety of vegan dishes to each gathering. While it’s not required that those who attend bring a dish, it is, of course, encouraged so there’s enough food to go around.

Some of the dishes people have brought to past potlucks include tater tot casserole, Bhel Puri, vegan pizza, and desserts. It’s a great way for even nonvegans, who may be intimidated by the perceived confines of a vegan diet, to sample a number of different vegan food options at once.

For vegans who want to gather with like-minded people, or non-vegans who are curious about plant-based diets, the No Meat Meet-Up Vegan Potlucks are an opportunity to meet, mingle, and sample different kinds of foods.

Crosstown Arts will host the next No Meat Meet-Up Vegan Potluck on Sunday, February 16th.

ianca Phillips has been organizing vegan events in Memphis since 2004. Phillips says that, for her, it started as a moral issue rather than one of diet.

“I consider myself an ethical vegan, so vegan for the animals,” she says. “[We] don’t want to contribute to factory farming.

“When I went vegan in 2004, I wanted to meet other vegans. I put flyers around town, old-school flyers. Like, ‘We’re going to have an animal rights meeting!’ and people came.” At the time, the focus of the group was to spread animal rights information and not to focus on the health benefits of veganism.

“We’d organize mostly PETA protests, and PETA would send us materials and we’d go out to KFC or somewhere. …

We did circus protests, vegan leafleting, dressed in full plant costumes that we made ourselves,” she says with a laugh.

hillip Dewayne had no desire to be a chef when, as a teenager, he landed a job washing dishes at The Peabody.

His friend’s mom got him a job in the banquet kitchen. “Which is hundreds and thousands of dishes a night because of the capacity of work they do,” Dewayne says.

That’s when he met the man he calls “Dad” — Andreas Kisler, The Peabody’s executive chef.

Dewayne now is chef/owner of Park + Cherry at Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

“I never would have taken this journey without him,” he says. “Honestly, I owe everything to that guy.”

On February 20th, Dewayne and Aaron Bertelsen, author of Grow Fruit & Vegetables in Pots: Planting Advice & Recipes from Great Dixter, will create a three-course dinner.

Dewayne, 30, who grew up in a two-bedroom house with his mother, grandparents, sister, and brother in Klondike in North Memphis, had never met anybody like Kisler.

“Kisler and I had a few talks, and he basically told me, ‘You know, if you take this seriously, you listen to me, one day you can go on to open your own restaurant. You’ll be as successful as you push yourself and allow yourself to be.’”

Dewayne became a cook, and Kisler yelled at him like he did the other cooks. “I would overcook things,” he says. “I would undercook meats. I screwed up a lot. I was 18, 19 at the time. I wasn’t always prompt. I got sent home a ton for not being in the right attire.”

But Kisler also told him, “You know, I have to be that guy because I have to get the team in order.”

Dewayne became Kisler’s “go-to guy.”

He helped him with the hotel’s wedding tastings and banquet events. “We became like Batman and Robin,” Dewayne says.

He refers to Kisler as Dad. “Not having a dad, he kind of stepped into that role for me,” he says. “I had the ultimate respect for him. I knew that he was really trying to give me something I could have for a lifetime.”

After a few years, Dewayne left the hotel and went to work for River Oaks’ chef/ owner Jose Gutierrez. “Andreas probably would have preferred for me to stay and work my way up, but my ambition pushed me to want to leave The Peabody,” he says.

“Andreas and Jose were more French technique straight by the book,” he says.

“Kelly was true to the South. Very Cajun, very New Orleans Creole.”

After Restaurant Iris, Dewayne took a job at the Del Coronado Hotel in San Diego, joined the Navy, then moved back to Memphis, where he worked as a private chef, became part of a catering business, and began his own meal prep business.

Dewayne then got the job at Dixon, where he focuses on farm-to-table dishes.

As for the “Phillip Dewayne style,” he says, “I like Asian [food], so I’m trying to create more of a French-Asian fusion. … I love to create a taste that people never had before.”

Dewayne’s excited about working with Bertelsen. “We’re going to team up for a USA-UK collaboration take on dinner.

We’ve created a menu that’s American and British, based on some of the recipes from his books. I’ve tweaked them a bit to add a little a Southern flair.”

And now Dewayne is giving back. He created the Chef Phillip Dewayne Foundation. “I teach parents how to nourish their kids. It’s an effort to fight childhood obesity and give food knowledge to poverty-ridden neighborhoods.”

Dixie Beer was started in 1907 and bopped along swimmingly until the big nationals drove most of the locals out of business in the 1950s and 1960s. Then, in the 1970s, there was that infamous “bad batch”: 45,000 cases of epically skunky Dixie Beer. Smelling a bargain, Joe and Kendra Bruno bought the brand in 1985.

They filed for bankruptcy in 1989, apparently deciding that being technically a microbrewery offering a single beer that tasted exactly like Miller Lite was not a great business plan. Dixie then introduced a more substantial Blackened Voodoo lager and by the 1990s had brewed itself back into solvency.

Then came Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The brewery on Tulane Avenue took on 10 feet of water and was looted shortly thereafter. Ten years later, the Brunos were in an imminent domain argument with the city and LSU over the abandoned building possibly being expropriated for a VA hospital. It made them paranoid.

Which brings it back to where I came in.

Kendra leaned around the front seat and asked how she could be sure I wasn’t a shill of the LSU system. The charming

Mrs. M leaned forward and said, “Oh, Murff went to Alabama. He hates LSU.” That did the trick.

Without a building, Dixie was then contract brewed in Wisconsin, and later, after Saints owner Tom Benson and his wife Gail bought the brand in 2017, here in Memphis at the Blues City Brewery.

The recipe has remained the same, but it’s hard to see how the Memphis water didn’t improve on that paragon of unremarkably drinkable beer. We’ve got artesian wells; the water in NOLA tastes like underwear.

About two months ago, Dixie returned home to East New Orleans, with plans to take the brand national.

Which would be nice, because you can’t actually get it in Memphis proper — not even when it was made here. You can get it in Southaven.

With Mardi Gras upon us, it may be worth the trip over the state line for a six-pack or two in order to get in the spirit.

Especially since the insurance companies have ruled out the baby in the king cake as a choking hazard. Absurd. Of course, it is. In fact, all of New Orleans is a choking hazard. That’s where the magic happens.

I understand that Dixie is not using city water and possibly getting it from the artesian wells of Abita Springs — home of Abita Brewing — which, if you need a Mardi Gras beer here, is a great option.

Abita’s Mardi Gras Bock is, to me, an obvious marketing gimmick aimed at the sort of people who eschew king cake simply to avoid choking to death. Its amber, on the other hand, is a great Munich-style beer. Hop 99 is a great ale for all you hopheads, and Wrought Iron IPA is just a great beer.

It’s Dixie Beer, though, that is my psychic anchor to New Orleans; perhaps it’s the memories as much as anything.

Their Blackened Voodoo lager is worth trying, especially on Fat Tuesday, not only for the flavor but because it was banned for a time in Texas as being to occultish and witchy. For my money, someone here in town needs to start carrying this stuff on those credentials alone.

As for the insurance fraud story I was chasing, it was deemed too weird to publish. You don’t see that on the television either. That’s just bad storytelling.

n television, investigative journalists are never shown wasting most of their time on leads that go absolutely nowhere — but it happens. A lot. Back in 2015, I was in New Orleans chasing down what appeared to be an insurance fraud case of near-biblical proportions when I found myself in the back of a car driven by the owners of the iconic Dixie Brewery. I’d been a fan since college, and this was an angle to the story that was just too weird not to follow.

Birds of Prey ... ... and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn.

A

h yes, the first superhero movie of the year. It’s like the sighting of the first robin of spring, only with more tedious fighting.

For 2020, it’s Birds of Prey. For a mercenary enterprise that shows every sign of being constructed out of spare parts and leftovers by a corporation determined to wring every last penny out of the increasingly threadbare Batman brand, it’s not bad.

Everything about this film’s concept is schizophrenic.

The primary title suggests it’s a superteam story, but make no mistake, this is Harley Quinn’s movie. More to the point, it’s Margot Robbie’s movie. She not only stars as the Joker’s former special lady friend, she’s also the top-billed producer.

Birds of Prey began life as a spinoff of 2016’s Suicide Squad, an abominably bad movie that teamed up a bunch of Batman-adjacent bad guys for a once-in-alifetime mission. Suicide Squad is one of those movies that you think might turn the corner and be so bad it’s good, but then you try to watch it, and it’s just painfully

Highlander II bad. So Robbie, director Cathy Yan, and writer Christina Hodson had a pretty low bar to clear.

One theory goes that Batman is so beloved because he fights the best villains. Harley Quinn is the last great addition to his rogue’s gallery, introduced in 1992 as part of the first season of the beloved Batman: The Animated Series. The original Harley (Dr. Harleen Quinzel) was unambiguously a victim in an abusive relationship — a psychologist at Arkham Asylum assigned to help the Joker. But she fought the crazy, and the cray-cray won.

The Joker had always had nameless henchmen to carry out his evil clown games, but never a sidekick or a love interest. Even though Harley Quinn was conceived as a throwaway character, she caught on and actually proved to have some depth. She would periodically try to break away from the Joker’s domination, only to go crawling back. Consequently, she became one of the most sympathetic characters in the Batman mythos. When Robbie gave the character a live action debut in Suicide Squad, she was reimagined as a polychromatic roller derby girl, reduced to a damsel for Joker to rescue.

As she explains in her voiceover, she’s bound and determined not to go back to him this time. Her post-breakup ritual is relatable. She moves into her own apartment. She changes her hair. She spends nights on the couch watching Looney Tunes while eating a carton of ice cream. She gets a pet hyena and names him Bruce, after that Wayne guy. She rekindles her love of ultraviolence at the roller derby. She gets blotto drunk and blows up the chemical plant where her ex transformed her into a metahuman.

In the early going, when it’s focused on Harley’s character beats, Birds of Prey is actually fun to watch. I’ve been a Robbie skeptic, but I have to admit she has grown into a good actress. As Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Mark Hamill have proved by playing the Joker, it’s fun to watch someone with chops chew the scenery.

FILM By Chris McCoy fortune — in a nested set of voiceoverenabled flashbacks. When the birds of prey start assembling, things get more conventionally punchy. There’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead — who should be in everything — as Huntress. Jurnee Smolett-Bell as Black Canary, introduced singing a torch song version of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

The great Rosie Perez is Renee Montoya, a Gotham City detective who talks like she’s from a 1980s cop movie. She’s balanced out by Ewan McGregor who serves up the ham as Roman Sionis, a villain who looks like a refugee from a Miami Vice episode.

The closest Marvel analogs for the R-rated Birds of Prey are the Deadpool movies. Director Yan wears her influences on her sleeve: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Kill Bill are most prominent. As with all these endless

superhero movies, the little character moments are the best parts, while the action sequences all kind of blur together. But the stakes are pleasingly low (the world is never in any danger), and Robbie’s charisma saves the picture from getting overwhelmed by corporate IP service diktat.

The journey of Harley from henchwoman to antagonist, and her determination to get out from under the shadow of her more famous boyfriend, is where the energies of the all-woman creative team have been directed. Their candycolored enthusiasm is infectious.

Last spring I found myself in a position of unimaginable privilege. For the first time in my adult life, I had a car that worked and was paid off. No weird rattles, squeaking brakes, bald tires. I hate the term “adulting” for philosophical reasons, but it was one of those times in my life that made me think “so this is what it’s like.”

Then I started anticipating the inevitable break-in, wreck, or other misfortune that would set me back again and put me in my cosmic place.

“Just watch,” I’d say. “Something’s going to fall out of the sky and land on my car because I don’t deserve this.”

A month later, as a chunk of road debris hurtled toward my windshield on I-40, I thought, “Well, there it is.”

The damage turned out to be minor, but being virtually carless for a couple weeks reminded me how difficult it is to thrive in Memphis without a vehicle. My home and my office are two miles apart, putting me on the road a grand total of 10 minutes a day. I know I have it easy. But I tried to plot a bus route home from work and MATA’s trip planner told me “LOL, walk” — which I did, a couple times. And let me tell you, it sucked! If that’s more optimal than the bus, we’ve got a problem with the bus.

I can shrug and catch an Uber, but someone who has to schlep across town for a $7.25-an-hour job does not have that luxury. The bus ride from Whitehaven to Downtown takes about an hour one-way, not including the wait. Anyone who doesn’t have access to a car has their opportunities limited by the number of hours in a day.

I’m heartened by the county mayor’s commitment to transit equity, and I’d love to see MATA viewed less as the nuisance in the right lane on Poplar and more as a reliable way to get around. Improving and expanding service are obviously high priorities for increasing ridership, but there’s one more way to get people to hop on.

The New York Times last month published a story about a growing trend in cities that have seen bus ridership increase up to 60 percent. All they had to do was waive the fare. Should Memphis try something similar? Yes, it sounds counterintuitive, as the city and county look to infuse more money into MATA, not less. But public transportation can’t work unless it’s an option for everyone, versus the only option for some. There are two ways to do that: Make it convenient, and make it affordable. $1.75 a ride seems affordable, until you factor in the time investment and the fact that $70 a month does not fit everyone’s definition of “affordable.”

“Oh, but who will pay for it?” Let’s just get this out of the way: the same people who pay for every other public good.

I have little patience for those who bristle at paying for services they don’t use, as if we could allocate our taxes to the projects we care about. I don’t have kids, and my house hasn’t burned down yet, but here I am, still dutifully paying for schools and the fire department. If you live in Cordova and have never seen a bus, I’m sorry to hear it — but you chose the Germantown Parkway lifestyle, friend. And you’re contributing to the road congestion and pollution that better public transit would solve.

Actually, that makes a pretty good case for a toll. How about, say, $1.75 each way for commuters on 240 and 385? While cities that waived bus fares saw an increase in ridership, they didn’t see a decrease in the number of cars on the road. This is because people who ride the bus generally don’t have cars. Such is the case in Memphis, where bus riders typically live in poorer neighborhoods. Why should they pay to be part of the solution?

In addition to the wheel tax the county commission is considering, there are other car-centric ways to fund free transit. On any given day in Midtown, the city could make a boatload ticketing cars parked illegally on the street — too close to the corner, in no-parking zones, in front of fire hydrants. Maybe some incentives could encourage businesses to dig in and support a transit fund. Who knows?

It’s not impossible to make transportation a right, not a privilege.
