Digital Delta The

ATransforming Memphis into a Global Tech Hub
bold vision is taKing shape in Memphis. This vision seeKs to redefine the city’s economic future and position it as a global leader in technology. At the heart of the transformation is the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Digital Delta initiative, a strategic platform born from data, vision, and a commitment to inclusive prosperity. Its shepherd is Ted Townsend, President and CEO of the Chamber, who recently shared the origin story, impact, and aspirations of the Digital Delta, showing how Memphis is leveraging its singular strengths to become the nexus of a thriving tech ecosystem.
—TED TOWNSEND PRESIDENT AND CEO, GREATER MEMPHIS CHAMBER
“WE ARE IN HIGH GROWTH MODE, AND IT ’ S UP TO US TO IDENTIFY WAYS WE CAN CONTINUE TO INCREASE THAT.”
The Digital Delta concept emerged from a critical moment of self-assessment for Memphis. In partnership with the Brookings Institution, which selected Memphis as one of only three cities for an economic inclusivity analysis, the Chamber conducted an in-depth diagnosis of Memphis’s economy. The findings were sobering: Memphis lagged behind peer cities, taking 10 years to recover from the 2008 recession compared to a national average of six. By February 2020, the city celebrated record employment and incremental job growth, only to lose a decade’s progress in six weeks due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This volatility underscored the need for a new approach.
The Brookings study provided a roadmap, identifying key economic indicators — broadband access, job proximity, IT positions, and more — that could drive shared prosperity. One standout statistic reshaped Memphis’s narrative: 25 percent of IT positions in the region were held by African Americans, making Memphis number one
among 53 major U.S. markets with populations over a million. This surpassed even Atlanta, long considered a Black tech hub. A 2021 McKinsey report and Wall Street Journal article reinforced the opportunity, noting that tech companies seeking diverse workforces should look to the South, where the talent already exists.
This revelation sparked a pivotal meeting with the late FedEx founder Frederick
W. Smith and his son Richard W. Smith. Presented with a slide deck showcasing Memphis’s dominance in Black tech talent, the senior Smith, flipping through the data, declared it “shocking.” From that moment, he and Richard coined the term “Digital Delta”as a nod to Memphis’s geographic and economic identity as a fertile, nourishing region with its own strengths. The Chamber trademarked the phrase, and with Smith’s endorsement, launched a global marketing campaign to attract tech investment.
The Broad Reach of the Digital Delta
The Digital Delta is a comprehensive strategy embedded in the Chamber’s Prosper Memphis 2030 plan. This strategic framework sets ambitious targets: 50,000 high-

At Royal Studios, Tech Enhances Human Creativity
A music industry leader who runs the influential Royal Studios, Boo Mitchell is navigating the intersection of Memphis’ rich musical history and the cutting-edge possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI). Mitchell’s insights on how AI is reshaping music production are tempered by his emphasis on the irreplaceable role of human creativity. He offers cautious optimism about technology’s potential to enhance, rather than overshadow, the city’s cultural and economic contributions.
Royal Studios, a cornerstone of Memphis’s musical heritage, has long been a hub for iconic recordings, from Al Green to modern artists. Mitchell, a Grammy-winning producer, embodies the studio’s ethos of blending vintage soul with contemporary innovation. He describes himself as having “one foot in the past, one foot in the future,” a philosophy that shapes his approach to AI in music production. While he doesn’t use AI to create music from scratch, Mitchell relies on it as a powerful tool to enhance his work, particularly when dealing with vintage recordings or equipment.
AI’s restorative capabilities have proven game-changing for Mitchell. He uses tools to clean up recordings, removing unwanted noise — like a fan humming in the background of a vocal track — while preserving the warmth of analog sound. Another standout tool allows him to isolate elements of a live recording, separating vocals, drums, and bass even from a 45 RPM record fed into a computer. “That’s probably my favorite AI tool so far,” Mitchell says, marveling at how it gives him creative options. These advancements enable him to honor the authenticity of classic recordings while meeting modern production demands, bridging Memphis’s musical past with its future.
Memphis, a city synonymous with soul, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll, is also emerging as a player in the digital age. Mitchell points to local tech leaders like audio engineer and entrepreneur Gebre Waddell, and the presence of Elon Musk’s ventures in the city that signal Memphis’s growing role in the tech landscape. “It’s a bit of a Wild West at the moment,” he says, capturing the energy of the city’s tech evolution. Yet, he sees this as an opportunity rather than a threat, provided technology serves to enhance human creativity rather than replace it.
For Mitchell, the key is balance. He embraces AI as a tool that can streamline production and open new possibilities, but he’s wary of it “taking food off the table.” This concern ties into broader discussions about AI’s impact on livelihoods, particularly in creative industries. Mitchell references the Elvis Act, a Tennessee law addressing AI-related rights in music, which he hopes will become a federal standard. The act reflects Memphis’s proactive stance in shaping ethical AI use, ensuring artists and producers maintain control over their work in an AI-driven world.
Beyond production, Mitchell sees AI’s potential in areas like marketing. However, he stresses that AI lacks the human instinct needed to truly connect with audiences. “You still need to know your market, see people’s reactions,” he says. Memphis’s music scene, deeply rooted in emotional resonance and cultural authenticity, relies on gut feelings and lived experiences, qualities AI cannot replicate. “Every success I’ve ever had started from a gut feeling,” Mitchell reflects, underscoring the human element that drives his craft.
This human-centric approach aligns with Memphis’s broader economic narrative. The city’s music industry thrives on its ability to evoke feeling and tell stories. AI can enhance these efforts, but it’s the artists, producers, and marketers who bring the soul. Mitchell’s philosophy mirrors the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Digital Delta vision: leveraging technology to boost prosperity while preserving what makes Memphis unique.
Mitchell’s story is one of coexistence between tradition and innovation, as well as human creativity and technological tools. He views AI as an ally that, when used thoughtfully, can amplify Memphis’s cultural and economic strengths. “I don’t think technology should be feared,” he says. “It should enhance us.” •
“I BELIEVE THIS WOULD CHANGE OUR TRAJECTORY PROFOUNDLY, HELPING TO ADDRESS THE HIGH POVERTY RATE AND CREATING GENERATIONAL WEALTH.”
—RICHARD
W. SMITH COO, INTERNATIONAL, AND CEO, AIRLINE, FEDEX
quality jobs by 2030, with 50 percent held by minorities; 700 advanced industry firms; and 20,000 annual STEM completions. These goals aim to place Memphis in the top quartile of peer cities, transforming its economic landscape. As of 2025, the Chamber has announced 18,000 jobs (53 percent held by minorities), more than 400 advanced industry firms, and 10,000 STEM completions, signaling strong progress despite challenges like macroeconomic uncertainty.
The initiative’s success hinges on its ability to capitalize on Memphis’s preexisting strengths. The city’s legacy as a global supply chain leader, underpinned by what the Chamber calls the “four Rs” (roads, rails, rivers, and runways), aligns with the needs of tech companies.
The arrival of xAI, which built the world’s largest supercomputer in Memphis with a $12 billion+ investment, marked a turning point. This “stamp of validation” thrust Memphis into the global tech lexicon, attracting companies like Dell, Super Micro, and Nvidia to establish major operations. The Digital Delta’s proven efficacy lies in its ability to support high-tech manufacturing, from chips to servers, leveraging
Memphis’s proximity to customer bases and cost efficiencies.
A Regional and Inclusive Identity
Unlike past economic efforts that were insular, the Digital Delta embraces regionalism. The Chamber collaborates with economic development organizations in Mississippi and Arkansas, sharing marketing collateral and encouraging partners to adopt the Digital Delta identity. A meeting with Mississippi Development Authority’s Executive Director Bill Cork during a tour of xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, exemplified this approach.
Cork pledged to use “Digital Delta” when promoting North Mississippi, signaling the initiative’s regional resonance. “We may have trademarked it, but we don’t own it,” Townsend emphasized. “The region owns it.”
This inclusivity extends to the community level. The Digital Delta aims to uplift all Memphians, regardless of socioeconomic background. Townsend says that advanced industry firms like xAI pay at Palo Alto rates, of-
fering high-quality jobs that don’t require traditional four-year degrees but can be accessed through accelerated industry certifications. These opportunities are increasing household incomes, and diversifying the tax base.
The resulting revenue can fund critical services like public transportation, addressing long-standing community challenges.
Amplifying
Existing Sectors
The Digital Delta’s impact transcends tech, strengthening Memphis’s core industries such as supply chain logistics, medical devices, manufacturing, and more. Robotics, electric vehicle production, and sustainability initiatives all benefit from the digitization and AI integration that the Digital Delta fosters. For example, manufacturing firms can leverage Memphis’s logistics infrastructure for cost-efficient production and distribution, while medical device companies apply advanced technology to innovate.

At mStreet Fiber, Powering the Digital Delta with Citywide Connectivity
A critical component of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Digital Delta initiative is the deployment of a citywide fiber-optic network by mStreet Fiber (formerly Blue Suede Networks), a company committed to bridging the digital divide and enabling Memphis’ ambitions as a destination for high-growth industries, tech giants, and digital-first entrepreneurs.
Charles Elliott , CEO of mStreet Fiber, has been building a vision of how fiber infrastructure fits into and enhances the Digital Delta, its impact on the city, and its role in fostering equitable economic opportunity.
“There's no business I know, large or small, that doesn't need fiber,” he says. “It is essential technology that will serve residents and businesses of all sizes today and for generations to come.”
At the heart of the Digital Delta is the recognition that robust digital infrastructure is foundational to economic transformation. mStreet Fiber’s citywide fiber-optic network is designed to enable Memphis‘ businesses and residents to access future-enabling fiber connectivity, supporting the Chamber‘s goal of attracting next-generation employers and fostering innovation.
Unlike traditional broadband, mStreet Fiber‘s network delivers multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds (up to 2 gigabits) with generational capacity, meaning it can handle massive data loads and accommodate future applications without requiring costly upgrades. This infrastructure is akin to a public utility, ensuring that businesses large and small have the connectivity needed to thrive in a digital economy.
By providing enterprise-grade solutions, mStreet Fiber enables emerging tech companies, startups, and advanced industries to operate efficiently, creating high-quality jobs and driving economic growth. The network’s scalability supports the Chamber’s efforts to recruit tech giants and nurture innovation hubs, positioning Memphis as a viable alternative to coastal tech centers.
And it further aims to reach the broader community. Today, Memphis has only 22 percent to 25 percent of residents with access to fiber-optic internet, and even fewer in lowincome and mixed-income neighborhoods.
To that end, mStreet Fiber aims to build out
“Memphis can become a national model of connectivity, digital participation, and economic opportunity — today and for generations to come.”
—CHARLES ELLIOT CEO, M STREET FIBER
its network to 85 percent of the city, including into low-income areas. This holistic approach ensures that nearly every address — industrial, commercial, or residential — has access to the same high-speed service, regardless of location or socioeconomic status.
By providing equitable access to fiber, mStreet Fiber hopes to enable residents to engage in remote work, access telehealth, and complete online education without relying on makeshift solutions like McDonald’s Wi-Fi. This connectivity is a game-changer for addressing longstanding issues like poverty and educational disparities, uplifting the entire community.
The Digital Delta’s success depends not only on infrastructure but also on equipping residents with the skills to participate in a digital economy. mStreet Fiber is partnering with local organizations like ProGeny Place, Tech901, and The Works to integrate digital literacy into workforce development programs. These partnerships leverage existing services to teach residents how to use high-speed internet effectively, from applying for remote jobs to mastering digital tools required by modern employers.
By fostering digital literacy, mStreet Fiber supports the Chamber’s goal of increasing STEM completions and creating pathways to high-wage, tech-related careers. The network also enables remote work opportunities, which are increasingly critical in a digital-first world.
The deployment of mStreet Fiber’s network is one of the largest private investments in Memphis’ history, funded by Meridium, a financial services company specializing in infrastructure investments. This nearly $1 billion project, distinct from taxpayer-funded models like Chattanooga’s fiber network, underscores the private sector’s confidence in Memphis’ potential. Studies from Deloitte, the Federal Reserve, and others highlight the economic benefits of broadband penetration: increased job creation, higher GDP, and enhanced community outcomes.
mStreet Fiber’s partnership with the Greater Memphis Chamber evolved because Chamber leaders saw the network as a “key cog in the wheel” for powering Memphis’ economic renaissance. This collaboration ensures that the network is built to meet the city’s specific needs, with open communication to drive access and adoption.
Elliott is working to provide a national model for digital opportunity and participation. By 2030, the company aims to have built a network that supports new jobs, attracts innovative companies, and empowers residents across all neighborhoods. And Elliott’s passion for this project is palpable.
“The Chamber has set a clear vision for economic growth through digital infrastructure,” he says. “We’re proud to be part of the Digital Delta, building a network that transforms lives and makes Memphis a destination for the future.” •
The Chamber’s MEMready program, with its new site development portal, showcases available mega sites across the region, attracting investment in these sectors.
From 2022 to 2023, Memphis’s economy grew from $96 billion to $102.9 billion, surpassing $100 billion for the first time. The xAI investment alone added $12 billion in 2024, with projections suggesting a 45 percent growth in gross regional product over two years, a pace unmatched by any U.S. city in history. If sustained, this could position Memphis just behind Austin in economic output by 2030, a remarkable leap for a city once in the bottom third of its peers.
As Townsend puts it: “That shows the thrusters are at full throttle and we are in high growth mode, and it's up to us to identify ways in which we can continue to increase that, whether it is electric vehicle production, whether it is sustainability and energy, and the full supply chain of that, whether it is artificial intelligence or you name any facet of advanced manufacturing that is tech related, all of that can be accommodated here in Memphis' economy.”
Advocacy and Infrastructure: Building the Foundation
The Chamber’s advocacy at local, state, and federal levels has been critical to the Digital
Delta’s success.
Annual trips like MEM2NASH bring Memphis business leaders to Tennessee’s state capitol, fostering dialogue with policymakers. This advocacy secured federal funding for America’s River Crossing, a new Interstate 55 bridge, with a $400 million Federal Highway Administration grant — the largest infrastructure investment in Tennessee’s history. Matched with $250 million each from Tennessee and Arkansas, the bridge will enhance supply chain logistics, reinforcing Memphis’ role in the global economy.
The Chamber’s 20-year effort, culminating in the 2023 Transportation Modernization Act, underscores the long-term commitment behind these wins.
The Chamber also supported policies to expand broadband access, a key Brookings indicator. By advocating for M Street Fiber’s $1 billion private-sector investment, the Chamber ensured 85 percent of Memphians will have broadband by 2030, boosting education, telehealth, and economic opportunity without raising taxes. These efforts remove barriers, creating a foundation for holistic growth.
A Global Echo and a Local Legacy
The Digital Delta’s global impact is evident in the words of a tech company chairman who told Townsend, “I want us to be in the Digital Delta.” This echo of the Chamber’s vision signals Memphis’s arrival as a tech hub. Yet, the initiative’s true measure lies in its local impact. By growing incomes, creating jobs, and investing in infrastructure, the Digital Delta is transforming neighborhoods while preserving Memphis’s authentic identity that is rooted in its musical heritage, as seen in the $150 million annual economic boost from Graceland, and its cultural vibrancy.
Townsend credits his team, board, investors, and members, emphasizing that this is a shared endeavor. Looking to 2030, the Chamber envisions a Memphis where “Digital Delta” is as synonymous with innovation as Silicon Valley, a region transformed by opportunity, inclusivity, and high-growth potential. For Memphians, it’s a promise of a brighter future, where the common worker, the student, and the entrepreneur all share in the prosperity of a city redefining itself on the global stage. •
At ALSAC, a Technology-First Approach to Philanthropy
ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is an essential component of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Digital Delta initiative. It’s a good fit: the ambitious vision to transform Memphis into a global technology hub, driven by innovation, inclusivity, and robust infrastructure, is consistent with ALSAC’s mission. Led by president and CEO Ike Anand , a seasoned technologist with a passion for Memphis’ potential, ALSAC is leveraging cutting-edge digital tools, artificial intelligence (AI), and a vast donor network to not only advance its mission but also contribute to the city’s burgeoning tech ecosystem. It is technology-first organizations like ALSAC that can amplify the Digital Delta’s goals. The organization, along with St. Jude, is inherently technology-driven, with St. Jude relying on advanced research technologies and ALSAC harnessing digital platforms to engage donors worldwide. Anand, who joined ALSAC in 2020 after nearly 15 years in technology roles at Expedia Group in Seattle, emphasizes that ALSAC’s success stems from its tech-forward strategy. “We are the number one charity on all major technology platforms — YouTube, TikTok, Strava, Facebook, Instagram,” Anand says. This prominence is no accident; it results from seamless integration with technology partners through APIs, robust data-sharing systems, and a skilled team of technologists.
About 25 percent of ALSAC’s revenue comes from digital channels, primarily its proprietary website and apps, which the organization builds and manages in-house. This independence from third-party platforms underscores ALSAC’s technological prowess, enabling it to deliver personalized donor experiences at scale. By owning its digital infrastructure, ALSAC ensures agility and innovation, aligning with the Digital Delta’s goal of fostering a technology-savvy ecosystem in Memphis.
The advent of generative AI is a gamechanger for ALSAC. “A lot of people tend to overestimate the impact of new technologies in one year,” Anand says, “but underestimate what the impact would be in 10 or 20 years. So, we are preparing for that long-term impact. But I think of it as a technology that is beneficial for us.”
He sees ALSAC as an early mover in leveraging this technology for philanthropy. With a donor base of 60 million U.S. households, ALSAC collects vast amounts of data from direct transactions and social media interactions. AI enables ALSAC to identify patterns within this data, personalizing donor experiences on its website, at events, and across digital channels. “AI is about finding patterns in data and acting on them,” Anand says, noting that personalization enhances donor engagement and loyalty.
However, Anand stresses that data privacy is paramount. ALSAC adheres strictly to donor consent and privacy preferences, ensuring ethical use of AI. This commitment to trust aligns with the Digital Delta’s emphasis on inclusive, community-driven growth, as ALSAC’s technology not only advances its mission but also sets a standard for responsible innovation in Memphis.
“We are the number one charity on all major technology platforms — YouTube, TikTok, Strava, Facebook, Instagram.”
—IKE ANAND PRESIDENT AND CEO, ALSAC
Since St. Jude opened in Memphis in 1962, ALSAC and St. Jude have been steadfastly committed to the city. This loyalty brings an economic ecosystem of talent, jobs, and global visitors — patients, families, and donors — who contribute to Memphis’ vibrancy.
ALSAC’s presence attracts technologically savvy professionals, fostering a talent pool that supports the Digital Delta’s aspirations. The recent arrival of xAI, with its $12 billion supercomputer investment, has further elevated Memphis’ tech profile, and Anand sees ALSAC as a vital contributor to this momentum.
Anand, who witnessed Seattle’s transformation into a tech hub, believes Memphis is on a similar trajectory. “Memphis has all the right ingredients — abundant land, great climate, educational institutions, large corporations, and research institutions like St. Jude,” he says. ALSAC supports this growth by advocating for a collaborative ecosystem that includes childhood education, workforce training, and opportunities for tech talent to engage with local corporations. The organization’s global reach also draws visitors who often choose to relocate, enriching Memphis’ cultural and economic fabric.
Anand, a member of the Chamber’s Chairman’s Circle, envisions Memphis as a premier tech hub in the heart of the U.S. along the Mississippi River. To realize this, he calls for cross-pollination of ideas among businesses, startups, and government. Startups, he notes, are critical to a tech hub’s vitality, and Memphis needs infrastructure and policies to attract early-stage tech companies and entrepreneurs. ALSAC stands ready to support elected officials in this endeavor, advocating for investments that align with the Chamber’s Prosper Memphis 2030 plan to create 50,000 high-quality jobs and attract 700 advanced industry firms.
For Anand, leading ALSAC in Memphis is a “dream come true,” blending his passion for technology with a mission to save children’s lives. By integrating AI, building digital platforms, and fostering a tech-friendly ecosystem, ALSAC is not only advancing St. Jude’s cause but also powering the Digital Delta’s vision of a transformed Memphis — a city where innovation thrives, and every resident benefits from a vibrant, inclusive economy. •
At CodeCrew, Harnessing Technology for Education
The nonprofit CodeCrew has been revolutionizing the city’s economic and social landscape through the power of technology education for a decade. Its transformative work in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) education is part of a mission to build thriving, modern tech ecosystems in the region, and encompasses the spirit of the Digital Delta.
Meka Egwuekwe, a co-founder and executive director of CodeCrew, has taken the organization well beyond simply training coding. It is embracing goals of reshaping opportunities for kids, adults, educators, and policymakers while addressing systemic challenges like poverty and education inequity in Memphis and beyond.
CodeCrew has constructed a four-pillar approach designed to empower individuals and strengthen communities through technology. It directly serves youth by bringing computer science and AI education directly to students and embedding teachers in schools to offer coding as an elective. Beyond the classroom, it provides after-school programs and summer camps, reaching 500 to 1,000 kids weekly, a hands-on approach that teaches skills and serves as preparation for a digital world.
Through a rigorous 29-week curriculum, CodeCrew also trains adults to become software and AI engineers, equipping them with skills to secure high-paying jobs. It’s a lifeline for many, offering pathways to economic mobility and stability in an increasingly techdriven economy.
CodeCrew trains educators to teach computer science, amplifying their impact. The initiative is crucial for scaling its vision that every child, in every school, at every grade, should have high-quality computer science education.
The organization prioritizes policy and advocacy by championing legislation to make computer science a cornerstone of education. In 2019, it helped pass a Tennessee bill requiring a statewide computer science education plan, with CodeCrew’s leadership serving on the task force to shape it.
More recently, it partnered with a broad coalition that included Code.org, the College Board, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and local tech councils to make computer science a high

AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CODECREW
school graduation requirement in Tennessee. The policy mandates computer science in middle and elementary schools and secures funding for teacher training, impacting a million students annually.
As CodeCrew looks to the next decade, its preparing Memphis for an “AI-native economy,” where AI underpins every job, business, and nonprofit. It has already begun offering community workshops for individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits to adapt to this shift, ensuring Memphis remains competitive. “We’re asking ourselves how we can help everyone — not just kids, but adults, businesses, and organizations — thrive in this new world,” Egwuekwe says. He wants to see Memphis as a leader in shaping technology, rather than being shaped by it.
It’s a vision that is deeply tied to economic equity. In Memphis, where poverty and crime are persistent challenges, CodeCrew sees tech education as a powerful antidote. Egwuekwe quotes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “Poverty and ignorance breed crime.” By providing access to tech skills, CodeCrew creates pathways to good-paying jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. “Nothing fights crime better than a thriving ecosystem,” he says. CodeCrew’s approach is not just about economic growth. It also emphasizes ethical growth by showing that technology can benefit society without exploitation, which in turn aligns with inclusive prosperity. “We can grow together, but we have to be intentional,” Egwuekwe says, warning against repeating historical patterns of marginalization.
CodeCrew envisions a city where education, research, entrepreneurship, and jobs form a vibrant tech ecosystem, creating pathways to the middle class and beyond. “Memphis ought to be at the center of shaping technology,” Egwuekwe says. To that end, its partnership with the Greater Memphis Chamber underscores its role in the city’s economic strategy that will drive prosperity. •
Richard Smith’s Vision for Memphis as a Tech Hub
The Digital Delta is more than a bold economic strategy for Memphis, Tennessee — it’s a transformative vision to position the city as a global technology hub, leveraging its diverse workforce and strategic advantages.
At the heart of this initiative is Richard Smith , who, alongside his father, the late FedEx founder Fred Smith, played a pivotal role in its inception. Smith sees the Digital Delta as a catalyst for profound economic impact, global recognition, and generational wealth creation in Memphis.
The Greater Memphis Chamber’s Digital Delta concept took shape several years ago when Richard Smith met with then-Chamber President and CEO Beverly Robertson and then-SVP of Economic Development Ted Townsend with a compelling idea. “I approached [them] about a McKinsey study that was featured in a Wall Street Journal article,” Smith recalls. “I believe my father is the one who called my attention to the article originally.” The study highlighted two critical trends: “First, that most of the high-wage job growth in the U.S. was in tech. Secondly, that Big Tech had a well-documented challenge when it comes to diversity.”
For Smith, Memphis’ demographic profile — a young and diverse community — presented a unique opportunity. “My mind said, ‘Demand meet supply, supply meet demand,’” he says. He urged the Chamber to devise a business recruitment strategy that capitalized on this alignment, engaging the city’s workforce development ecosystem to cultivate diverse STEM talent. During these discussions, Smith and his father coined the term that encapsulates Memphis’ potential to become a tech hub rooted in its cultural and geographic identity along the Mississippi River. “We workshopped the name together and came up with ‘Digital Delta,’” Smith says. As a global logistics leader, FedEx is not just a supporter of the Digital Delta but a technological pioneer whose innovations align with the initiative’s goals. Smith highlights the company’s sophisticated digital
segment, FedEx Dataworks, which has been harnessing data for nearly five years to revolutionize supply chains. “We are making supply chains smarter for everyone by building the world’s most flexible, efficient, and intelligent network, based on the physical network we’ve built for over 50 years,” he explains. This work enhances FedEx’s operations, serves customers, and drives sustainable growth, positioning the company as a tech leader in Memphis.
“We workshopped the name together and came up with ‘Digital Delta.’”
—RICHARD W. SMITH
COO, INTERNATIONAL, AND CEO, AIRLINE, FEDEX
FedEx’s dual role as a supplier and customer in the tech ecosystem makes it a natural partner in the Digital Delta. “We also work with everyone in tech, as they are both suppliers to us and customers of our transportation and logistics services,” Smith says. The company collaborates closely with the Chamber to recruit Big Tech firms, amplifying Memphis’ appeal. “Anything that lifts our headquarters city is of interest to FedEx and to me personally,” he says, emphasizing the mutual benefits of a thriving Memphis.
Smith envisions the Digital Delta as a game-changer for Memphis’ economy and global standing. By positioning the city at the center of the AI race, the initiative can attract high-wage tech jobs and address systemic challenges like poverty. “Having Memphis in the center of the conversation when it comes to the AI race presently underway in tech should benefit the city from an attraction perspective,” he says. Memphis’ competitive advantages — low cost of living, robust infrastructure, and minimal traffic — make it an ideal location for tech companies and talent. “As Memphis is highly attractive from both a cost-of-living and mobility standpoint, having plenty of street and road infrastructure, I believe this would change our trajectory profoundly,” Smith says.
The initiative’s focus on developing diverse STEM talent aligns with the Chamber’s Prosper Memphis 2030 plan, which aims to create 50,000 high-quality jobs and attract 700 advanced industry firms. Smith believes this can lead to “creating lasting generational wealth in this community,” particularly for underserved populations. Beyond economics, the Digital Delta elevates Memphis’ global reputation, showcasing its quality-of-life amenities, from cultural attractions to natural beauty. “The people I know who move to Memphis are always much more positive about our city than those who’ve never experienced life anywhere else,” he says.
For Richard Smith, the Digital Delta is a personal and professional mission to elevate his hometown. “I believe we are entering a period of sizable disruption,” he says, “and you would rather be at the epicenter of it, adapting rapidly and adopting profusely, leapfrogging less nimble markets.” •

Brewing Coffee With a Cause
Memphis Grindhouse Coffee combines grit, grind, and coffee to spread the city’s culture and give back.
BY TOBY SELLS
Memphis Grindhouse Coffee’s story is a classic business tale with plot twists and adaptions, but with a classic Memphis element: grit.
It started as one thing. Became another. Challenges really did become opportunities. The skin in the game was personal time and treasure. Owners and founder Dwayne Chaffen and Rick Askew have been grinding on this road for five years now. That grind
now shines as Grindhouse has customers in 23 states, a growing list of retail and restaurant partnerships, fun blends that celebrate the soul of the city, and heart enough to give back to a community that supports them.
Chaffen and Askew met as business students at University of Phoenix. Business plans often begin with problem-solving, and they decided they would put a coffee shop in Whitehaven, a community that had never had one.
Dwayne Chaffin
The coffee business could weather recessions, and Starbucks had already exposed America to the good stuff. They visited 10 banks for a $100,000 loan to start the shop, but left empty-handed every time.
“One banker told he’d rather give us money for a grocery store than a coffee shop,” Chaffen said. “Food businesses have a very high failure rate. So, we couldn’t get the money.”
That challenge may have saved Grindhouse from a plot twist no one saw coming. They started the company selling their coffee online in 2019, just before Covid’s lockdowns shuttered so many independent restaurants and coffee shops. When folks were stuck at home, they turned to the internet instead of in-person coffee shops, Chaffen said.
”We wanted the coffee to represent the culture.”
—DWAYNE CHAFFIN OWNER AND FOUNDER, MEMPHIS GRINDHOUSE COFFEE
The company started with a co-packer who roasted and packaged their coffee under the Grindhouse name. It turned out to be an expensive option; the pair knew they would have to learn the trade themselves. Chaffen learned to roast in a weeklong class in Minneapolis. The pair bought their own roaster, and now they do it all themselves, earning grind titles in a city where that really means something.
“A lot of people here have courage, and grit, and grind,” Chaffen said. “That’s how we came up with the name. We wanted the coffee to represent the people who live here in the city, to represent the culture.”
Chaffen and Askew have continued to expand Grindhouse’s reach online. They even have fans in Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Memphians can find Grindhouse IRL in stores across town including Cash Saver, Superlo, Miss Cordelia’s in Harbortown, and some liquor stores. Grab a cup or a bag of Grindhouse at Butterific Bakery & Cafe Downtown and even at People’s On Beale.
Each bag of Grindhouse says it is “coffee with a cause.” The company donates a portion of their proceeds to Shelby County elementary schools with a goal to help children improve their reading comprehension. A new collaboration had Grindhouse create a special Charity Blend, which supports University of Memphis student-athletes through the 901 Fund NIL Collective. •
Demystifying Technology for Business
Hughetta Dudley’s company helps make technology make sense.
BY TOBY SELLS
Technology is vital to business — and more so all the time — but talk of cloud architecture, network management, and cybersecurity risk mitigation can spin the head of even the savviest professional.
That’s one of the reasons Hughetta Dudley founded Stragistics.
“I think the fun of it for me is helping those who don’t understand technology to understand it better,” said Dudley, the company’s president and CEO. “A lot of times in my career, I have been the liaison between the business community and the technology community because I could speak both sides of the coin.”
fell in love with it.” She’s done nothing but technology in her career ever since.
“I love being able to help business departments come up with solutions that help them reduce costs or improve their performance.”
Back in her hometown of Baltimore, Dudley had her first business break. A third-party logistics firm needed to start up an IT division in Atlanta. So, “with much excitement,” she packed her car and moved South. The threemonth contract turned into a two-year contract. At the end, the IT division was up and running and her team had “made some great strides with some awesome deliveries of software solutions and processes and procedures for that organization to be vibrant and grow.”
—HUGHETTA DUDLEY PRESIDENT AND CEO, STRAGISTICS
Her interest in tech started in junior high school. Testing showed proclivities for analytics and pointed her toward careers in computer data processing or engineering. While school leaders thought she was better suited for data processing, Dudley attended an all-boys school for a summer program in engineering. There, “I got my first taste of (engineering) and I just
Stragistics was born.
Dudley’s faith journey led her to Memphis. But when she got here, she said she didn’t know where to start and didn’t know anyone in the business community. She followed the local newspapers and found that then-U.S. Congressman Harold Ford Jr. was holding a procurement event. There, she was pointed to the MidSouth Minority Business Council. Through it, she found a mentor who helped her learn the city, learn its business
climate, and learn to navigate it.
“I was in business a few years here and somebody said, ‘How can you be in the city and not know this individual or not be associated with the (Greater Memphis Chamber)?’,” Dudley said. “Between the Chamber and the MidSouth Minority Business Council, that was my platform to learn the business community, meet companies, meet other small and midsized businesses and to be around like minds. It was my conduit to help me grow.”
Stragistics serves its clients by helping them navigate their technology platforms, many times winding down older, legacy systems and onboarding a new system. The company also does a lot of work to help clients prevent data disasters or help them recover from them.
Dudley’s company can also help companies find IT staffers. Sometimes a Stragistics staffer will embed with a company until they figure out some problem. Sometimes, Stragistics can simply find qualified IT pros for their clients and are hired directly by them.
“I love being able to go and help business departments or divisions resolve or come up with solutions that help them reduce costs or improve their performance,” Dudley said. “That just was always so exhilarating for me. And it still is.” •

Sharing Stories Through Events
For 25 years, Behind the Scenes has communicated through galas, meetings, and more.
BY TOBY SELLS
For Behind the Scenes, events are more than parties; they’re storytelling tools.
The Memphis company celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. In that time, it has produced events for heavy hitters like Hilton, the Product Advisory Council, and the Society of Entrepreneurs. It’s planned galas, meetings, and graduations. When the Mid-South Farm & Gin Show decided to go virtual during Covid, they called Behind the Scenes. So did those who organized Eli Manning’s jersey retirement celebration at Ole Miss.
With them all, there’s a message, says company founder and CEO Dusky Grimmig.
them motivate their employees or inspire their customers to do business.”
A celebratory feel may not be appropriate for a company meeting on bad news, Grimmig says, for example. But a celebratory feel may be necessary for a company meeting on great news. Behind the Scenes conveys all of this in myriad ways: how the guests are greeted at an event, how they’re checked in, decor, food, and especially how the audio and visual components are executed.
“We’re constantly in learning mode, about different interactive options or new technology.”
—DUSKY GRIMMIG FOUNDER AND CEO, BEHIND THE SCENES
“So many times, we’re putting on events and trying to get into the client’s head,” said Grimmig. “What’s their objective for the event and how will we measure success?
“So, to some outsiders, it looks like we’re party-planning. But it’s really about their corporate communication goals: helping
“For example, at the Greater Memphis Chamber event in December every year, our motivation is for attendees to leave feeling inspired about the city they live in, feeling like the Chamber and Memphis businesses are growing our city, and that it’s becoming a positive place,” Grimmig said.
How would those guests feel all that if they arrived at the event, were checked in at a tiny table with a long line, and staffers rustled through stacks of papers to find
their names? Does that convey a message that the city is moving forward with technology, Grimmig asked? Now imagine guests are checked in seamlessly using QR codes or some other tech.
All of this is what Grimmig set out to do when she founded the company 25 years ago. She managed a video production company for 12 years and handled the event elements for some of its largest companies.
“I decided to take just the event side and started Behind the Scenes so that I can follow the passion of really helping clients make sure that their strategic elements of an event were carried out.”
Behind the Scenes works with clients in the medical device industry, aviation (especially a large helicopter company, Grimmig said), automotive, nonprofits, and more.
It’s a creative business. So Grimmig says her team has to constantly consider how to convey an event’s message (and do it on budget). Staying competitive means staying up to date.
“We’re constantly in learning mode, about different interactive options or new technology. We’re sponges and just really learning what’s out there.” •

Building for Opportunities
directFX has built a business focused on customers’ needs.

How do you fill a casino every week?
Answering that question, among others, is a core business strategy for directFX Solutions. The company also asks banks how they get the right offer to the right person. They ask schools: How do you get the brightest minds?
The company is a nationwide, full-service, direct-mail partner for other companies (like for those mailers for casinos, banks, and universities). They now do a lot more. But the focus on direct mail gave the company its start back in 2003 and its unique name.

“Every service we’ve added, we’ve grown the need for it, grown the volume, and then we add it to our arsenal.”
Kush Shah and his business partner, Chris Warner, were working for Pitney Bowes on the sales side of mailing equipment. They began to see companies outsourcing their large-volume mail jobs to other companies.

“We didn’t know a single person in Memphis when we moved here,” Shah said. “It was a true startup. Very few business contacts. No banking relationships. Nothing.”
But they rented an office at Nonconnah Business Park with two small offices and a small, open area for their machines. The two sold during the day and ran production at night, sometimes taking shifts to run machines all night. Sometimes this meant 100-hour work weeks. They hired their first employee two years into business.
The team landed larger clients and slowly built their mail volume. Then, some of their largest clients at the time asked if they could
handle printing for them. They eventually bought their own printers and formed a new directFX division. It was the first of many.
“Every service we’ve added, we’ve grown the need for it, grown the volume, and then we add it to our arsenal,” said Shah. “We saw clients had a need for signage. So, we started offering them signage service. We’ve just invested in equipment as we’ve grown those parts of our business.”
In 2020, directFX added a division for promotional products. Most recently the company added a label printing division that now prints about 90 percent of the watermelon labels in the U.S. While about 90 percent of its business is in print products, directFX also does direct digital marketing through email and text campaigns, data management to know more about a company’s audience, and it can build and manage campaigns and projects.
The company works with companies in gaming, education, banking, and more. But Shah said more than 50 percent of directFX’s work is with nonprofits.
“It helps us find ways to give back to a lot of these organizations, whether it’s doing in-kind work or discounted work,” he said. That helps us stay engaged, especially with the local community of nonprofits.” •

At ARTSmemphis, we don’t create the art, but with your contributions, we make it possible.
As the primary arts funding organization in Memphis, we know that our city is more vibrant, exciting, and dynamic with the contributions of the arts. We also know that the arts sector employs close to four thousand and generates over $35 million in tax revenue. We know that art is vitally important for recruiting and retaining talent, jobs, and investment for our region.
From on stage to behind the scenes, from the drawing board to the boardroom, and from the classroom to the greenroom, there is a role for everyone. is

Mended Therapy
Combining mental health with a love of fashion, creativity, and sustainability, Mended Therapy was born. Ashley wants to show that although things may seem like they cannot get better, there is hope. Just like a mended piece of clothing is brought new life, the same can be said of us. She is here to walk with you through this journey with laughter, creativity, and challenging your beliefs about yourself. She is MENDED (and constantly mending). She hopes you will let her join you as you MEND.
Ashley specializes in working with LGBTQ+ populations and mood disorders.
